Antigua and Barbuda to auction off $81m yacht ‘owned by Russian oligarch’
Andrey Guryev, who has been put under UK government sanctions, claims he is not owner of Alfa Nero
An $81m (£67m) superyacht said to be owned by the sanctioned Russian oligarch Andrey Guryev is to be auctioned off by the government of Antigua and Barbuda, which claims the vessel has been abandoned in the Caribbean since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.
The government of Antigua and Barbuda on Monday warned the owner of the Alfa Nero superyacht that they had 10 days to claim the vessel or it would be sold to the highest bidder.
The information minister, Melford Nicholas, said Alfa Nero had been abandoned in Falmouth harbour in Antigua since February 2022 and the government was “trying to prevent a future hazard since the luxury vessel is not being maintained by its owner”.
In a statement the office of the prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda said: “A notice to the newspapers and other media will be published for a period of 10 days, notifying the sale of the Alfa Nero vessel in order to satisfy the requirements under the law for a forced sale. If the owner fails to claim the vessel within that time period, the government of Antigua and Barbuda will sell it to the highest bidder.”
Guryev, 62, who made a $10bn fortune from the Russian fertiliser company PhosAgro, is the owner of Alfa Nero according to the US government, which imposed sanctions on him last year. The US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said it had “identified Alfa Nero, a Cayman islands flagged yacht that AG Guryev reportedly bought for $120m in 2014, as blocked property of AG Guryev”.
The yacht, which features a 12-metre infinity pool, a Jacuzzi, a spa, a beauty room and a helipad, has been used by Guryev’s family, including his son (also Andrey) and his son’s wife, Valeria, who studied at the London College of Fashion and once reportedly stated on Instagram that she was “too pretty for work”. Like many yachts, it is owned via an opaque offshore structure, and Guryev has denied being the owner.
Guryev, who was subjected to UK government sanctions in April 2022 , is also, according to the OFAC, the owner of London’s largest private residence: the 25-bedroom £50m Highgate mansion Witanhurst.
The property is officially owned via Boradge Ltd, a company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands. Guryev’s London-based lawyers have said “Mr Guryev does not own Witanhurst”, without providing further details. Guryev’s spokesperson has previously told the New Yorker that he was a beneficiary of a trust owning the property but not the legal owner.
Last year Gibraltar auctioned off the £65m superyacht Axioma owned by the sanctioned steel billionaire Dmitry Pumpyansky. The sale of Axioma attracted controversy because it is being sold not for the benefit of the Ukrainian people but for a US investment bank, JP Morgan, which claims Pumpyansky owes it more than €20.5m (£17m).
Pumpyansky was until March of 2022 the owner and chairman of the steel pipe manufacturer OAO TMK, a supplier to the Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom. The UK said the billionaire, who it said had built up an estimated £1.84bn fortune, was one of the oligarchs “closest to Putin” .

Update: Antigua and Barbuda to auction 81m Alfa Nero
Local media reports that a sale appears likely for the russian oligarch linked motor yacht….
The Antigua and Barbuda government is moving closer to selling Alfa Nero , which has been moored in Antigua’s Falmouth Harbour for over a year and is said to be owned by sanctioned Russian fertiliser tycoon Andrey Guryev. Alfa Nero has not been moved since arriving around the start of the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine and was recently deemed a hazard to the harbour and marine environment.
The yacht has been subject to an official search to determine whether the ultimate beneficiary owner had been named on international sanction lists following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to the government, the search was unsuccessful and the vessel has been deemed a hazard to shipping and to the harbour where it is moored.
The statement from the Office of the Prime Minister Antigua and Barbuda accounted for the sale of the Alfa Nero in order to satisfy the requirements under the law for a forced sale. If the owner fails to claim the vessel within that time period, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda will sell it to the highest bidder.
The crew of the vessel has not been paid, nor has the provider of the fuel that the vessel has consumed since its arrival in Antigua. According to reports in Antigua Observer, the government has already entertained multiple bids and the sale will be deliberated during the weekly cabinet meeting.
The luxury superyacht, delivered in 2007 by Oceanco, is believed to be owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch. Alfa Nero was sold in 2011 to its current owner with a last known asking price of $115 million. Prior to being "abandoned", it was a well-maintained vessel undertaking many refit and shipyard visits over the years.
It offers accommodation for as many as 12 guests across six suites, comprising a master, two VIPs, two doubles and a twin. Alfa Nero can also host 28 crew and has a long list of key features that include a hydraulically operated pool and a helipad on the aft deck.
The Antigua and Barbuda government has consulted with the US authorities prior to taking the action, but it is unknown whether the money raised from its sale will stay with the Antigua and Barbuda government. Information Minister Melford Nicholas explained that the government is "trying to prevent a future hazard since the luxury vessel is not being maintained by its owner."
The forced sale of Alfa Nero highlights the importance of complying with international sanctions and ensuring that ultimate beneficial owners are transparently identified. Failure to do so can lead to significant financial and reputational risks, as well as legal consequences. The case also serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining vessels to prevent potential hazards, both to the crew and to other vessels in the vicinity.
It is now becoming increasingly evident that governments around the world are taking a more proactive approach to enforcing regulations and ensuring compliance. Yacht owners, operators, and crew must remain vigilant and take steps to ensure that they comply with international laws and regulations to avoid similar situations in the future.

I was surprised to read that the money or no money from sale would go to the Antiguan government as I would have expected that the governemnent would have some sort of claim recognised as producing a Maritime lien , e.g. damage caused by the vessel, claims relating to security over a vessel, srvices supplied to a vessel and port charges. The boat, having been arrested, as I assume it has by the crew for non payment of wages, are high in the pecking order of those to have their claims settled, Salvage claims, Admiralty Marshall's costs, berthing and maintenance costs and lawyers being the first to be settled from the funds of the Admiratly sale.

Iconic yachts: On board Oceanco's striking 81m superyacht Alfa Nero
Big, black and beautiful, the 81.27 metre Oceanco motor yacht Alfa Nero makes an incredibly powerful impression.
Although she is so large, the secret feature of Alfa Nero is that she is definitely not ‘high volume’ in the sense of trying to cram in every possible cubic metre of accommodation like a modern cruise ship.
On the contrary, the first impression you receive on stepping aboard is of wide-open decks leading into big uncrowded rooms. The exterior and layout designers Nuvolari Lenard clearly agree with the notion that the ultimate luxury afloat is open space. In fact, with four decks to play with and only twelve guests to accommodate, they could afford to be exceptionally generous in their use of space.
The most spectacular visual trick is the first one you see: a sizeable swimming pool with a built-in current and an ‘infinity’ aft side where the water overflows across a large sloping sheet of glass to create a waterfall effect.
This is particularly effective at night when both the pool and the waterfall are under-lit and the movement of the water creates an ever-changing light show. The pool is set in a wide expanse of open deck which extends well aft from the superstructure, creating a lido which can equally well serve as a party deck.
Having been one of the first designers to explore the possibilities of art deco afloat, Alberto Pinto has moved forward to the even more surprising era of pop art with the work of Roy Lichtenstein providing the inspiration.
In addition to a number of Lichtenstein prints in his famous comic-strip style, Alberto Pinto has managed to create an entire decor based on them with zigs-zags of woodwork or kid leather, bold stripes of flooring, swirling patterns on upholstery, bright primary colours for lacquered woodwork, or high-gloss zebrano with its vibrant stripey grain.
Here you will find no gracious oak-panelled rooms, nor any varnished teak capping rails – all is new and modern.
This is a big vessel with a big crew, capable of giving unrivalled standards of comfort and service to a fortunate few. The overall impression is of an incredibly spacious yacht with large, uncrowded guest areas and generous cabins, while exceptional use has been made of the exterior decks. Looking up at Alfa Nero ’s impressive outline, you might wonder what has become of pretty white yachts.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to the United States of America, Sir Ronald Sanders, announced today that the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has been successful in its discussions with the Government of the United States of America, concerning its application for a license to proceed with the unfettered sale of the Super Yacht, Alfa Nero.
On 18th May, the US Department of the Treasury issued license, No. RUSSIA-EO14024-2023-1060959-1, to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, authorizing persons licensed by the US Treasury to “participate in the Government of Antigua and Barbuda auction of the vessel M/Y Alfa Nero”. It also authorizes “transactions that include but are not limited to, bidding on the purchase of the vessel; paying deposits; and providing financing, insurance, or funding in connection with the purchase”.
This authorization was announced in the National Assembly of Antigua and Barbuda today by Prime Minister Gaston Browne, opening up the way for the Port Authority of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda to proceed with a sale of the Alfa Nero by auction, to any persons who are not on a sanctioned list and who have applied for, and received, a license from the US Treasury to engage in financial transactions related to the vessel. It is understood that several interested bidders have already received individual licenses from the US Treasury Department.
Ambassador Sanders said that, while the license permits the Government of Antigua and Barbuda to proceed with the auction and to sell the vessel, other matters, such as the formal delisting of the Alfa Nero, from the US Treasury’s Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) list, are still being pursued.
The Ambassador remarked that “this entire process broke new ground; there were no rule books or patterns to follow. In this sense, much has been achieved by a small state”.

Alfa Nero Luxury Yacht Ownership Fuels Seizure of Russian Assets Saga
In the unfolding saga entangled in the aftermath of the war in Ukraine, the ownership of a luxury superyacht, the Alfa Nero, has become emblematic of the complexities surrounding the seizure of Russian assets. Tracing back the intricate ownership web of the £54m superyacht led investigators to a UK firm, the lawful services of which enable a Russian oligarch to maintain that such substantial assets do not actually belong to him.
The continuous legal battle over the ownership of the Alfa Nero has resumed in Antigua, instigated by the daughter of Russian billionaire Andrey Guryev, who is challenging the seizure of the yacht. The island’s government, aiming to auction off the vessel and retain the proceeds, even amended its laws ahead of the intended auction last June. Initially procured by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt for a sum of £54m, the winning bid was subsequently retracted amidst a storm of legal disputes, including the one initiated by Mr Guryev’s daughter. She alleges she is the sole adult beneficiary of the trust that holds the yacht’s ownership, separate from her billionaire father.
The launch of this challenging investigation unveiled assets linked to the billionaire, valued at around £500m, and illuminated how the careful orchestration of trust structures managed by the British firm has allowed Mr Guryev to dispute any ownership of the identified yachts and London properties at the time of his sanctioning.
Roaming through the exclusive Falmouth Harbour in Antigua, a dockhand willingly disclosed the lavish features of the Alfa Nero, yet fell silent when questioned about its prior owner. Prior to the vessel’s confiscation back in April, the US government stated it belonged to Mr Guryev, labeling him as a “known close associate” of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and linking him to a group of “Kremlin-connected elites.”
Mr Guryev amassed his fortune co-founding the fertilizer firm PhosAgro after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. By the time the company was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2011, Mr Guryev had purchased the run-down Witanhurst Estate, which he remodelled into a luxury London mansion worth around £300m. Documents submitted to Companies House in 2023 indicate a connection between the Witanhurst Estate, the Alfa Nero, and the Guryev family, tied to an address in Guernsey, a British crown dependency.
Interestingly, another opulent asset linked to this same Channel Island address is the Luminosity, one of the world’s biggest hybrid superyachts. Following the invasion of Ukraine, this massive vessel departed an Italian port to dock in non-EU Montenegro, a journey that took place just a day after EU sanctions were imposed on Mr Guryev’s son.
The address in Guernsey leads to the inconspicuous offices of wealth management firm Opus Private, which proclaims to assist “some of the world’s wealthiest individuals manage and protect their assets.” Along with other substantial properties, such as a £50m London penthouse, this firm is connected to a Guryev family portfolio worth over £500m.
Through court records, Opus Private was identified as involved in an unsuccessful legal action that attempted to halt the initial auction of the Alfa Nero. The company insists that Mr Guryev is not their client as he is no longer a beneficiary of the trust overseeing the yacht, though they have notified the UK and Guernsey authorities of the trust assets they presume as frozen, corresponding to UK sanctions against Mr Guryev.
In stark contrast, Ukraine has intensely focussed on confiscating Russian assets, positioned to counter claims by Russia’s impact on global food security through its control of the fertilizer industry. Ukraine has already sanctioned approximately 9,000 individuals and companies, including all members of the Guryev family.
The UK government’s stance is to retain frozen assets until Russia compensates for war damages caused in Ukraine. Yet, neither the Treasury nor the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has addressed queries concerning the Guryev family’s UK-based assets.
A spokesperson for Mr Guryev stated the sanctions against him were without any ‘proper or legitimate basis,’ while Opus Private emphasized the legality of trust structures, assuring that their services comply with all applicable laws.

The crew of Russian billionaire’s Alfa Nero superyacht is having the time of their lives on the abandoned $120 million vessel. While it is raking up more than $100,000 a month in maintenance bills, the crew has been playing Call of Duty and swimming in the infinity pool.
Is the Antiguan Government auctioning the Alfa Nero yacht? As much as they would love to watch the gorgeous vessel sail away and have also received 20 bids for the ship, Alfa Nero is still a blocked property. As long as Washington designates Alfa Nero as a “blocked” property, the Antiguans worry the sale proceeds might end up frozen. A statement from Antigua and Barbuda’s cabinet said: “Reports from the Antigua and Barbuda Ambassador in Washington, USA, is that the US Treasury and the US State Department are collaborating to allow a new owner to take possession and be allowed to sail freely into US waters and elsewhere. The proceeds from the sale will go towards paying the debts incurred since the vessel sailed into Antigua’s harbors more than one year ago. The overage will go into the Consolidated Fund operated by the Antigua and Barbuda Treasury”.

Motor Yacht
Motor yacht Alfa Nero was launched in 2007 by renowned Dutch shipyard OceAnco, bursting onto the yachting scene with uncommon fervour by breaking the contemporary mould of large superyacht design. At 82 metres her build triggered a paradigm shift in luxury yacht design with exteriors by the celebrated team at Nuvolari & Lenard and interiors from the talented Alberto Pinto.
Constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, Alfa Nero can accommodate 12 guests in six lavish cabins. With 1,250-square metres of living space across her 82 metre hull, she provides plenty of space for a bridge deck gym, three separate dining areas, a dance room, pantries on the three guest decks, a separate crew lounge, and a lift servicing and connecting all decks.
The build of motor yacht Alfa Nero was driven by a desire to offer her owners the ultimate luxury cruising experience in their home sailing grounds of the Mediterranean, maximising the lifestyle elements of this part of the world.
This easily recognisable luxury vessel is anything but short of innovative facilities. Amongst her stand-out features is the Nuvolari-designed aft deck ‘beach club’ which features an immense glass-ended pool whose floor can be partially or fully raised, transforming it into a dance floor or helipad on demand.
Her exterior is highlighted by a long, low stern which dominates a large proportion of the super yacht’s length and leads her sleek profile. To outside on-lookers, her most eye-catching feature is the open aft deck and minimal overhangs that offer a departure from conventional design. Each overhang is defined by a stainless steel, oval rail that serves a purpose as illuminative, decorative or environmental.
Outdoor living is undoubtedly a significant feature of her design as she features an impressive amount of space for leisure and entertainment including the 7 x 3.5m swimming pool which stands as one of the largest ever incorporated on a yacht.
The pop-art inspired Pinto interior hints at a nautical theme, particularly evident in details such as side tables resembling staghorn coral and seashell images lining the guest hallway. The intricate staircase wrapping around the glass elevator shaft, two al fresco spa-pools, massage room and gym only add to the subtle elegance of the luxurious vessel.
Amongst her six cabins are an indulgent master stateroom; two double VIP suites; one double guest cabin; and two twin guest cabins. Luxury yacht Alfa Nero is powered by two MTU 4,680hp diesel engines that allow her to reach a maximum speed of 20 knots and cruise comfortably at 18.
