Testimonials.

New to owning a yacht, this was my first experience of providing a survey for insurance renewal. It couldn't have been easier - and it was quite enjoyable ! Tom Hustler carried out part of the survey afloat, part ashore. Throughout, he was happy to involve me, explaining what he had found, and very patient when explaining the relevance. He even waited for me to see to some points before he finalised the survey report - so no problem renewing the insurance. And all completed on time, for the agreed charge. I have no hesitation in recommending Seaworthy Services for the straightforward task of surveying a medium sized yacht. From tales along the way, it is clear Tom is also well respected for much grander nautical projects.
"Mr Tom Hustler, Principal of Seaworthy Services, has provided an outstanding service to us as absentee owners of our 10.5 m yacht Gusto. Following a detailed and highly professional assessment, in his Marine Surveyor role, of three yachts we had been considering, we decided to purchase Gusto and approach Tom to see if he was in a position to continue his involvement with us and manage all aspects of her annual preparation for sea. We were delighted that Tom responded affirmatively. With prompt, timely, relevant and friendly professional utilisation of e-mail and phone as required, Tom keeps us fully informed on all issues relevant to the management of her care and maintenance. Tom visits Gusto on at least a weekly basis. He takes a proactive approach, assessing not only any immediate action required but also preventative maintenance necessary. Tom similarly carefully presents his thoughts about any upgrading of Gusto's systems, always being aware of the relevance of his recommendations to our sailing plans. He arranges quotes by service providers, and then oversees work undertaken. Most recently, for example, Tom has arranged and overseen the installation of an AIS ; undertaken all the detail associated with the Registration of Gusto in Jersey, including in his role as a Marine Surveyor, preparing all the documentation (Tonnage Certificate, Marking Notes); and responded to our e-mail seeking his comment about the fitting of solar panels and a folding propeller. Mr Hustler is absolutely reliable, honest, and objective. He holds to and meets the highest standards of personal and professional integrity. It is with the fullest confidence we recommend Tom and Seaworthy Services Ltd. Andrew Gordon and Marie, "Gusto".
"Tom Hustler performed an extremely thorough and complete survey of my 9.5 metre yacht over two days - one on/in the boat (on land) and one up the mast and at my home checking all sails, cushions and accessories. His report (35pp) was detailed, clear and illustrated. Also provided 200+ photographs. Items requiring work were clearly identified and tabulated in categories of importance, along with practical suggestions for remediation. Only complaint was from my rigger, who had not expected his previous year's work to be checked! Tom is easy to work with, turns up when he says, and reports very quickly. Price was right. No hesitation in recommending Seaworthy Services."
"Excellent service provided by Seaworthy Services. The marine survey was comprehensive thorough and very fair. Much of the report contained photographic evidence which made clear exactly what was being talked about. This produced a really useful action plan for continued maintenance of my boat."
“Tom from Seaworthy Services provided an excellent survey service after I purchased ‘KINGFISHER’ a 1950’s 16ft Carvel planked launch. He conducted a very thorough inspection, taking time to explain key points to me. The report came back very quickly; it was comprehensive, clear and made sensible recommendations. I would strongly recommend Tom and the services he provides.”
Our prospective purchase a Swift Trawler 34 was surveyed. We had excellent service and brilliant communication before, during and after the survey. Highly recommended
“Tom surveyed my boat and the service he provided was excellent. He provided me with a comprehensive report on the condition of the boat and then kindly arranged for a company to inspect and estimate for the works needed. He has been most helpful throughout this process and nothing has been too much trouble for him. I’d have no hesitation in recommending him or using his services again in the future.”
I bought a Motor boat without seeing her as I was away with work. Tom surveyed and went through the vessel thouroughly making the purchase hassle free but also left me secure in the knowledge that I was buying a well checked boat
Excellent service. We commissioned an insurance condition and valuation report from Seaworthy Services. Tom Hustler carried out the inspection and report on our wooden 1930's gaff cutter. We communicated largely by email and Tom was very good to deal with - getting back to us and answering our queries promptly. He inspected her at the yard during lay up, meeting and liaising with our boatbuilder for this. He gave our boat a thorough inspection and highlighted issues that we needed to sort out so that we had time to do so before Spring launch. He finalised the report after a fair amount of work was done and made the necessary adjustments to the final report. All went smoothly and I could not have asked for more. I would say also that the fees charged were reasonable. I would certainly recommend Seaworthy Services.
We were really impressed with the survey and advice given to us. Tom was extremely helpful in explaining everything to us and was happy to share supporting information so that we could make informed decisions about our future sailing endeavors. I would certainly recommend Seaworthy Services in future
I got a Cygnus Cygnet surveyed by Tom at the start of this year. I relied 100% on the survey report when purchasing the boat as the boat was at the opposite end of the country. Service and detail of the survey was excellent and I would highly recommend Seaworthy Services.

Pre-Purchase Surveys

General Condition pre purchase surveys are carried out to determine the condition of the vessel in detail and can also be used to satisfy insurance companies.

More about general condition surveys

Typically a pre-purchase structural condition survey would be carried out prior to the purchase of a vessel that is not very old and would include the following key yacht survey elements / activities.

More about pre-purchase structural surveys

Yacht & Boat Surveys

It is normal for a craft to be surveyed in order for insurance companies to establish seaworthiness before they write cover. Insurance companies have been known to require a condition report on vessels as little as five years old.

More about insurance surveys General condition surveys

At least twenty areas of antifouling and primers are removed to reveal the moulded gelcoat/epoxy surface. The scraped areas are then inspected for the early signs of blistering (often referred to as “wicking”). The relative moisture content will be measured using a Tramex meter to establish the moisture content. If necessary, recommendations will be given as to the best course of action.

Often necessary to secure a yacht mortgage, insurance quotes and probate.

Using a Cygnus ultrasonic thickness tester an assessment will be made as to the condition of the hull.

Sea trials are undertaken to establish the vessels systems whilst under working conditions, including; through hull fittings (seacocks and stern glands), rigging, steering gear, instruments and engines.

Preliminary inspections can be arranged to establish whether or not the vessel is worthy of a full condition survey; particularly useful if someone is to commission a survey having not seen the boat themselves.

The hull plating will be inspected visually by hammer soundings and by Ultrasonic point residual measurements (below the waterline); plate thickness will be estimated on the basis of controlled measurements taken at points where deterioration is most likely and not likely to have taken place.

A general inspection of the hull will be carried out above and below the waterline. In order to ascertain the extent of any distortion in the hull structure and in addition the fairness of the planking, this would give an indication of the soundness of the fastenings.

A visual inspection will be carried out for any evidence of movement and the planking will be sounded at close intervals using a rubber mallet in order to detect areas of decay. The hull planking will be inspected visually in order to establish the fairness of the planking, lingering dampness, evidence of movement and condition of the paint. Hammer soundings would also be taken in order to detect areas of decay.

Nick Healey is authorised by the YBDSA to undertake these surveys; resulting in a Certificate of Survey for Tonnage and Measurement which is sent to the Registry of your choice and is one of the documents you need to register your vessel on Part 1 of the UK Ships Register.

More Information

If substantial damage is sustained during a yachting incident then the Owner is well advised to engage a surveyor to represent his interests. In such cases Nick Healey examines and documents the damage and advises and oversees repairs.

Although Insurance Underwriters may also appoint a surveyor, he will be representing the interests of underwriters, which will not necessarily result in the same outcome as the interests of the Owner would require.

Consultancy and Refit Service

Nick Healey is available for consultancy work often required during refit projects, repairs and new builds. His project management aims are to obtain the best achievable outcome of the required finished product.

Services : Falmouth Marine Surveys

Types of survey and services offered.

#

Pre-purchase or “Full” survey

A comprehensive survey commissioned by a potential buyer prior to purchase. The report may also be used by a finance house if one is involved and the client’s insurance company when they come to insure the vessel after purchase. Primarily we will be looking for faults that could potentially make the vessel unsafe and costly to repair which can affect the negotiation of a sale. A full report will describe the vessel in a categorised way covering all aspects of its structure, function and systems, any issues found will be summarized up front and also highlighted in the body of the text.

#

Insurance Survey

Commissioned by the owner of a vessel when their insurer has requested a survey prior to renewing an existing policy. Typically, these are required when the vessel is twenty years old though some can request them within as little as five years from build, most renewal intervals vary between five and seven years thereafter depending on the broker. The body of the survey is on the potential risk a vessel presents to an insurer, this being focused on the structural safety and suitability of the craft.

#

Damage Survey

Usually commissioned by the marine insurance company when a vessel they cover has suffered loss or damage. Criteria required by the broker will vary case to case but there will usually be an additional investigative element, estimates of repair are often required and I can offer my advice when these need to be agreed.

#

Tonnage Survey

This is an exercise of measuring and a calculation based on a set formula, it is required for part1 registration with the U. K’s shipping register for commercial ships and pleasure vessels and a part3 registry is for the registry of the unique name and proof of the vessels existence only. Fees are charged against a set scale, this service can be requested through a YDSA application. This service can also be included as part of another survey.

#

Marine Consultancy and Project Management

Repairing or refitting any vessel can be a costly affair, this is where I can help save money and guide where it can be best spent on a project, preliminary tests and careful dismantlement can be a good way to make those tricky decisions during the early stages of an undertaking, when budget and time frame are the most pressing factors. With subcontracted undertakings, I can aid in choosing the most sensible approach to a project having been in business for over 10 years.

#

Osmosis Treatment

Assessing the extent of moisture ingress the FRP laminates has sustained efficiently, advising the best method of drying and returning the substrate to a strong, fair water resistant state is the aim. This can be a labour intensive undertaking and with a multitude of conditions there is no single method of treatment that will cover all osmatic forms. We can offer a service where an initial recording of moisture levels, followed by monitoring the drying process prior to advising on an appropriate application of new coatings.

#

Wooden Yacht Surveys

Before contracting a full survey it may be sensible to carry out an initial check over of the structure, the focus will be upon material deterioration from. A visual inspection will be carried out to reveal any evidence of movement in the planking and fastenings, hammer sounding will be used to detect areas of decay. It is important that a thorough examination as possible by getting good access to the hull and frames is conducted. The costs of repairs with wooden vessels can often be higher than the market value of the boat, so it is vital for you to get a clear idea of what you are assessing from the outset.

#

Sea trials are undertaken to establish the working condition of the vessels systems. This involves testing all through hull fittings, rigging, steering gear, instruments and engines. For performance power cruisers or large sailboats this involves bringing the engines up to operating temperature and run for a period under full load. All instrumentation, systems and installations will be examined.

Preparation for a Survey

Make sure we have the correct vessel details and location. Ensure the boatyard and broker or owner know when we are coming and we have access to both the yard and the vessel.

Health and safety

The vessel must be safe and accessible. We may not be able to go aboard if the vessel is unsafe or access to the site is unsafe.

Please ensure all the keys are available for the boat and for access to the yard or site.

Have sails available for inspection. Remove unnecessary equipment and personal effects. Please leave bilges clean and make sure we have access to all areas.

Masts, Booms and Standing Rigging

These can only be surveyed to head height if they are stepped. If they are un-stepped please make sure they can be easily found and identified in the boatyard.

Have all service records, warranty documents and invoices to confirm major repairs and renewal of major equipment available. Invoices for Standing Rigging and for Sail Drive Gaskets and Stern Drive Bearings and Bellows are very important. Try to locate the Invoices rather than Quotations. Please have equipment manuals available. The broker’s inventory would also be of great assistance.

If they have been removed please have Make, Type and Serial no.

The vessel will need to be lifted out of the water and safely chocked on the hard. This needs to be arranged by the Client with the boatyard and broker or owner. Have the hull pressure washed to remove fouling growth. Please do not reapply antifouling until after the survey as we may need to remove small areas of antifouling to get moisture readings and to check condition of the gelcoat.

Moisture Readings for GRP Hulls

To get meaningful meter readings the vessel should ideally have been out the water for four or five days, depending upon the temperature and humidity.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Most insurance companies have policies that only cover the service life of items. Some of these are determined by the manufacturers guidelines and or by the insurers experience of claims. The same is true for standing rigging, even if it looks fine, there may be crevice corrosion unseen in the fittings and therefore most insurance companies deem the service life of standing rigging as 10 years or less if the vessel has been raced.

Most insurance companies only cover claims within the service life of items. The service life can be determined by the manufacturers guidelines or by the insurers policy. Most manufacturers specify the service life of seals and bellows for Saildrive units and stern leg however they do vary. For example Yanmar and Volvo are between 5 and 7 years whilst Bukh say they should be inspected and not replaced unless damaged or aged. Check with your insurance company and try to keep receipts of seal changes.

Nice as it is go over a boat with the owner or purchaser, it does distract the surveyor from a logical inspection process that can lead to a less than complete survey. Ideally, the surveyor is best left to get on with the job so that you get the most accurate and complete report possible. A the end of the survey the surveyor will call you to discuss his initial findings but you should wait for the written report which is his considered opinion on which you should base any decisions.

Thee are standard rates for the different surveys available. These are competitive and reasonable so please call to discuss your vessel and the type of survey you require. There is no VAT charged or hidden costs. Travel costs are charged at 35p/mile if over 25 miles plus any marina contractor charges or bridge tolls.

How do I get the report? The written report will be emailed to you normally within three days of the survey. You should wait making a decision on purchases until you have the written report, as that is the surveyors considered opinion.

Pre-purchase Survey

Pre-Purchase/Condition Survey A comprehensive survey commissioned by a potential buyer prior to making the purchase. This will generally be done with the boat out of the water so we can fully access the external surfaces of the hull before going on to assess the rest of the boat’s structure and systems. A pre-purchase and condition survey is considered to ascertain the structural condition of the craft. All other items are inspected on a non-intrusive, visual basis only unless specifically agreed in the contract of the survey.

Stacks Image 15667

Insurance Survey

A survey commissioned by the vessel owner when his insurance company request a survey before renewing an existing policy. These used to be required when the vessel was 20 years old and then every 5 years although this is changing on some insurance policies now.

Stacks Image 15669

Damage Survey

This survey is commissioned by an insurance company when a vessel they insure has suffered damage or loss. The objective is to determine the extent of the damage and likely repair costs for the insurer.

Stacks Image 15671

Limited Scope Survey

There may be times when a boat owner or buyer does not need the surveyor to carry out a full survey. This is called a limited scope survey and although it may be less expensive, it is very important for the client to understand the limitations of the inspection. This may not be adequate to support an application for insurance and additional survey work may be required at extra cost. However, limited scope surveys have their uses, for example: if the boat has been repaired and the owner wants to check on the quality of the repair work or, an owner would like to have the hull & bulkheads surveyed on an regular basis to monitor condition and moisture readings.

Stacks Image 10785

Walk Through Survey

We also provide a ‘walk through’ survey which provides an overall view of the general condition of the vessel without going into great detail. It is often used by clients who are looking to purchase a particular vessel but do not have the time to travel to view a number of craft. YSC Surveys can do this for you, viewing a number of craft and then providing a report detailing comparisons between them.

Stacks Image 1440

Project Management

If you require repair work or modifications carried out to your boat, we can take the aggravation out of finding suitable engineers and yards by arranging, organizing and managing the works for you. This can be from overseeing simple repairs to major works involving multiple contractors. Project managing work can be difficult, especially if you are too busy or too far away to attend the vessel on a regular basis to ensure it is completed to your satisfaction. YSC Surveys are fully qualified and have many years experience of this kind of work and can make the task that much easier.
