This is the dramatic moment a 88-foot luxury yacht goes up in flames off the paradise Mediterranean island of Formentera.

Onlookers gathered nearby in their own boats to watch the blaze take hold as thick black smoke rose high into the sky above the stricken vessel . Five crew and 12 passengers are said to have been on board the yacht but were able to abandon it in time despite the speed with which the fire engulfed the Italian-designed cruiser.

Terrifying video shows the flames roaring through the vessel, which is burnt back to little more than its frame in several places. The fire is thought to have ripped through the vessel in a matter of moments, sending it up in a massive fireball that could be seen from neighbouring Ibiza.

Only one of the crew members, described as a 39-year-old Spaniard who suffered minor burns, needed hospital treatment according to regional emergency response coordinators. The alarm was sounded around 6pm yesterday while the yacht was anchored off Es Cavall d’en Borras beach in the Ses Salines Natural Park.

Spanish coastguards confirmed this afternoon the yacht that went up in flames was called Irmao and it had sunk off a natural landmark called Punta de Sa Pedrera in Formentera. They shared a statement published alongside footage of coastguard vessel Acrux towing the stricken yacht further out to sea before it disappeared under the water.

It read: “Yesterday a fire occurred on board Irmao off of Formentera. Private vessels rescued the 17 people on board. Our centre in the Majorcan capital Palma mobilised Acrux which towed the yacht which was on fire, but it sank.” It was not immediately clear why the blaze had started.

The fine sand beach, one of the best in Formentera off Ibiza where Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted partying in recent days, is home to famous bar-restaurants El Tiburon and Beso Beach. The yacht has been named locally as Irmao, which is based in Ibiza and marketed online as being available for “out-of-this-world charter vacations." It sleeps 12 in a VIP cabin, one double cabin and four twin cabins and charters for nearly £40,000 a week in high season.

One unconfirmed local report said the vessel belonged to Spanish poker shark Diego Gomez Gonzales, who also goes by "The Lion", according to Olive Press. Gonzales, 34, earned his nickname after attending the 2012 European Poker Tour in Prague dressed in a fully-body lion costume. It's currently unknown if Gonzales was on board at the time or whether it was being rented.

Gonzales was reportedly born in Madrid in 1988 and while growing up he started playing the card game with school pals and members of his family. As he got older he was drawn into the world of online poker before getting a place on the Spanish poker circuit. At the same tournament where he wore the lion suit, he came fifth and scored a whopping £200,000 prize.

The yacht was anchored off one of Formentera's most-stunning beaches. The island itself is one of the Balearics and is situated next to Ibiza. It is host to a number of world-famous bars, including El Tiburon and Beso Beach.

It is home to famous bar-restaurants El Tiburon and Beso Beach.

The nationalities of those on board have not yet been made public. Spanish coastguards responded to the emergency by towing the yacht further out to sea and assisting in putting out the flames. Last summer a £20 million superyacht owned by wealthy Italian businessman Paolo Scudieri went up in flames off the coast of Ibiza.

The 150ft vessel Aria SF caught fire on August 11, just a month after being delivered to its multi-millionaire owner. Spanish coastguards sent two rescue boats to the area as the nine passengers and seven crew on board abandoned ship after a Mayday call following a failed attempt to put out the blaze. There were no reports of any injuries. The black smoke the fire caused could be seen as far away as Majorca.

This is the dramatic moment a luxury yacht caught fire off the Spanish island of Formentera.

Footage showed the 88-foot vessel engulfed in flames, with plumes of thick, black smoke billowing into the sky.

The Italian-designed cruiser was anchored off the beach of Es Cavall d’En Borràs in the Ses Salines Natural Park near where Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted partying in recent days.

Five crew members and 12 passengers scrambled to abandon the vessel in a race against the time.

Only one of the crew members, a 39-year-old Spaniard, suffered minor burns and needed hospital treatment, the regional emergency response coordinators said.

Onlookers gathered nearby in their own boats to watch the fire.

Flames could be seen spreading throughout the yacht in just a matter ofminutes, turning it into a fireball.

Local media reported that the vessel belonged to professional poker player Diego Gomez Gonzalez, aka ‘The Lion’, but this has not been confirmed by authorities.

It was not immediately clear this morning if the people on board were tourists who had chartered the yacht or guests of the owner.

Their nationalities have also not yet been made public either.

The alarm was sounded around 6pm on Saturday, with Spanish coastguards sent to the scene.

The yacht was towed further out to sea where the fire was put out.

Video: 47m superyacht Navis One destroyed by fire in Greece

Tuesday, October 10th, 2023

Written by: Marine Industry News

Navis One Yacht

The 46.7-metre Gentech superyacht Navis One has sunk after catching fire in Greece, with 22 people safely evacuated.

The luxury charter yacht (pictured above before the blaze), which was delivered in 2014, caught fire while cruising in the Cyclades island group on Tuesday evening (9 October 2023), before sinking in the early hours of Wednesday.

Local media reports that witnesses watched the yacht’s stern ablaze around 8pm local time, with police arriving on the scene shortly after. By 9pm, flames had spread to the top two levels of the yacht, fanned by strong breezes.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @sea_through_my_eyes

The coastguard arrived before midnight, and the yacht was doused with water overnight before it began to list and eventually sink.

Witness reports observed large pieces of debris in the ocean near the accident site. According to local media, the yacht was carrying ten passengers and 12 crew, who were all safely evacuated to shore. No injuries have been reported.

According to charter listings, Navis One features exterior design by Uniellé Yacht Design, interior design by Ales Bratina and naval architecture by Meccano Engineering. The steel and aluminium yacht could accommodate up to 12 guests across five cabins, and a crew of 10.

The fire aboard Navis One is the latest in a number of recent yacht blazes. In September, AUS$10 million cruiser  Andiamo — owned by the billionaire family of late winemaker Bob Oatley — was destroyed by flames in Sydney’s Woolwich Dock.

In August, 17 people were rescued from the luxury yacht  Irmao , as the 88-foot vessel was engulfed in flames.  The incident occurred off the beach of Es Cavall d’En Borràs in the Ses Salines Natural Park, Formentera.

The same month, two people cruising in Traverse Bay, Michigan, were forced to jump into the water after their boat burst into flames.

Can you please do an analysis of why we have a proliferation of yachts on fire? Is it insurance fraud or increased lithium battery use or what?

Hello, I am the owner of the video taken of Navis One. Could you please re adjust your article to credit my husband Marco Fritz who filmed the video and myself Michelle Fritz/Fountaine who took the night blaze pictures. We both have a shared instagram account @Sea_though_my_eyes and would appreciate the credit since this other account @Izmir did not ask for permission. Kind regards.

Photos, video show large yacht on fire in harbor of UK port

  • A yacht worth some $7.6 million was engulfed in flames on Saturday in Torquay, England.
  • Dramatic photos show the yacht, which appears to be a Princess Y85, on fire.
  • A witness told Insider that small explosions could be heard from the yacht as the fire raged on.

The ship prompted a large emergency response in the town of Torquay on England's southern coast.

Dramatic photos posted to social media showed the 85ft ship ablaze.

The ship appears to be a Princess Y85, an eight-person ship with two engines and luxury fittings. This marketing video shows the details:

The British yacht broker TWW says a new Y85 ought to cost around $7.6 million .

A witness, Grace Kedzior-MacDonough, told Insider that the yacht caught fire around midday.

"We saw black smoke so everyone started to crowd around," she said.

By the time police and firefighters arrived to confront the blaze, the boat had burned through its moorings and was floating in the harbor, Kedzior-MacDonough said.

By then, she said, "the fire had got very out of hand."

A press officer for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said the force was first called at 11.57 a.m.

She could not say when the first responders arrived, but an online statement detailing a response of several crews was issued at 1.05 p.m.

Kedzior-MacDonough said that several small explosions could be heard from the yacht as the fire continued. Fire officials said the yacht contained some 8,000 liters of diesel when it caught fire.

Local police cordoned off the area, closed nearby roads, and asked people to close their windows to avoid inhaling the smoke, per an online incident report .

Later images showed that the ship had stopped burning so intensely.

Electrical Fire Destroyed Luxury Yacht Near Key West, NTSB Says

The fire that destroyed a luxury yacht near Key West in March 2021 likely started from an electric source within the sound enclosure for the vessel’s starboard generators, the National Transportation Safety Board has determined. However, due to the extent of the fire damage, investigators were unable to conclusively determine the source of the fire.

Marine Investigation Report 22/16 , published Thursday, details the NTSB’s investigation into the March 16, 2021, engine room fire aboard the MY La Dolce Vita while anchored near Marquesas Keys in the Gulf of Mexico.

The crew unsuccessfully attempted to extinguish the fire and abandoned along with two passengers using the vessel’s tender boat. They were then picked by two U.S. Coast Guard boats without injury. The fire, however, in the total loss of the $3.9 million yacht which sank a day later. An unknown quantity of diesel fuel oil was released, causing a small sheen.

La Dolce Vita on fire shortly after passengers and crew abandoned the vessel

The Cayman Islands-flagged La Dolce Vita was anchored with the crew preparing for the passengers to go snorkeling when the fire began. The captain and mate described the odor of the smoke to NTSB investigators as like burning plastic and like the insulation from wires burning.

Combined with the captain and mate’s description of where the smoke and flames emanated, investigators said evidence suggests the fire may have originated in the electric generator end of the starboard genset enclosure.

The vessel was chartered for hire four to six times a year, including at the time of the casualty. Under the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry, a vessel certified for commercial use of La Dolce Vita size would have been required to meet the UK Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY2) requirements for commercial use yachts. But investigators found the La Dolce Vita did not meet LY2 requirements, including having a way to remotely stop the engine room’s intake and exhaust fans and the capability to close off natural ventilation to the space.

luxury yacht on fire

The NTSB determined the probable cause of the engine room fire aboard the La Dolce Vita was an undetermined electrical source within the sound enclosure for the starboard generator. Contributing to the severity of the fire and total loss of the vessel was the inability to secure ventilation to the engine room, which reduced the effectiveness of the yacht’s fire extinguishing system and allowed the fire to spread beyond the engine room.

“Fixed fire-extinguishing systems in machinery and other hazardous spaces require a minimum concentration of extinguishing agent to either halt the chemical reaction producing the fire, displace the oxygen feeding the fire, or effect a combination of both,” the report said. “To ensure the effectiveness of the system and prevent the reintroduction of oxygen to the space, vessel designers and owners should ensure that the ventilation, both natural and forced draft, can be completely and remotely secured to all fire-protected spaces, and that all machinery within these same fire-protected spaces can be remotely stopped from outside the space where the machinery is situated.”

Marine Investigation Report 22/16 is available on the NTSB website .

Cruise ship passengers left terrified after fire breaks out on £850million Queen Mary 2

PANIC-struck cruise ship passengers were confined to their cabins when a fire broke out on the £850million Queen Mary 2.

They were woken by alarms at 6am as crew tackled the blaze below their accommodation.

Panic-struck cruise ship passengers were confined to their cabins when a fire broke out on the £850million Queen Mary 2

Travellers were ordered to stay in their cabins but could still smell smoke — sparking fears of an inferno at sea.

Although crew dealt with the blaze quickly, a source said: “Fire at sea is about the worst scenario for holidaymakers. It has left everyone freaked out.

“Passengers could smell smoke in their cabins so the panic felt by some was totally understandable.”

Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 — the world’s longest, tallest and most expensive cruise ship — was heading to Mauritius when the fire broke out on Thursday morning.

It had been at sea for four days since leaving Colombo in Sri Lanka on April 1.

The Sun understands the fire started when a compressor overheated in an area containing the ship’s engines, pumps, compressors, sewage and electrical tanks.

Our source said: “At first, everyone thought it was a practice drill. But it was far from that. The blaze was beneath the accommodation areas and the alarm was raised at 6am. It was chaos.”

But they added: “Emergency protocol kicked in and worked a treat with the crew behaving calmly and professionally.”

It is mandatory for staff to contact the authorities about such incidents on board.

Cunard yesterday confirmed to The Sun that there was a small fire that was extinguished immediately.

It insisted no guest services on board were affected.

Sailing upwind, with the first reef in the main and full headsail, averaging 7.5 knots and the bright blue ocean ready to greet you, looking like a perfect weekend getaway for many, yachting seems to be the holiday of the hour.

A yacht, as everyone knows, is a sailing vessel used for pleasure, cruising or racing. They come in varying sizes and are accordingly classified as large, Super, Mega and Giga yachts. Although, anything over 40M is marketed as a Superyacht, they are generally over 50M (average LOA of Superyacht: 52M) in practice. Megayachts and Gigayachts are terms applied to 100M plus yachts.

Being surrounded by water, fire on a boat might not seem like a worry but it is a very real threat, to both the boat as well as the passengers. A majority of yachts are made of fiberglass and today’s fiberglass/ composite boats burn very quickly, producing large volumes of toxic smoke that is equally as dangerous.

FIRES IN SUPER YATCHS: WHY IS IT HAPPENING?

“Brand new super yacht on fire, another sank, what’s wrong with super yachts?”

The above is a headline from just over a week ago. A brief google search will bring to light that hardly a day passes without the occurrence of fires in Superyachts. In many cases, when a boat catches fire and it is in a marina, there are numerous boats downwind from it. The fire will spread rapidly, and in many cases, disaster is avoided by hauling the flaming yacht out to sea.

Credit: economiadigital.es

Source: www.economiadigital.es

The string of yacht fires raises the question: What is it about these multi-million dollar investments that make them so susceptible to fire? This is a question with several possible answers. Let us dive into those.

ELECTRICAL FIRES

Faulty connections, wiring damage due to salt water and amateur repairs can cause electrical fires and this is the number one cause for yacht fires. Luxury yachts tend to have a lot of electrical equipment on board from air conditioners to navigational aids to entertainment systems. Also, if a boat’s battery is not secured correctly, it can cause a fire.

Electrical fires can also be purely random. The below is a statement from a marine surveyor: “I have seen a fire that occurred because of a construction worker nailing down planking on a dock,” recalled Joe Lobley, a Maine-based marine surveyor. “One of the nails went through and hit a wire. There’s a lot of variables there.” (Source: www.livemint.com ).

ISSUES IN FUEL SYSTEM AND GALLEY FIRES

Failures in fuel oil systems are also common fire hazards. Ranging from engine room fires due to over pressurization of fuel tanks to fuel leaks, there are many fuel system issues which can be common origins for yacht fires. Gasoline and diesel fuel are highly flammable, so even a tiny leak can lead to disastrous consequences.

Yachts, super or not, cannot survive on irregular maintenance schedules. Regular checks on the engine, electrical and fuel system are mandatory.

“WEEKEND SAILORS”

Due to the nature of superyachts to be used mainly for recreational purposes, there are chances of having less experienced crew on-board. This leads to a higher incidence of accidents and fires.

LACK OF REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

All the safety regulations that are followed by merchant or cargo ships are to be observed on luxury yachts, and even more so since there is an added responsibility of human lives. But in many cases, these tend to be overlooked.

As mentioned previously, most super yachts are made of fibreglass, which many believe to be fire resistant. However, they still melt and release toxic fumes which is also harmful for the environment.

Now, to put it in mathematical terms, here are some numbers:

  • 26% of fires are caused by “Off-Boat” sources
  • 20% of fires are due to “Engine Electrical”
  • 15% of fires are due to “Other DC Electrical”
  • 9% of fires are due to “Other Engine”
  • 8% of fires are due to “Batteries”
  • The remainder are galley fires, petrol filling, smoking etc.

The below casualty type distribution of the cost gives a better perspective of the effects of such fire damages in yachts.

luxury yacht on fire

Based on the rules laid by the SOLAS convention, safety measures for luxury boats comprise of three primary areas:

  • Safety during operation
  • Safety in navigation
  • Safety equipment

In this article, we will mainly deal with safety during operation which concerns avoidance and handling of fires or explosion on-board such luxury yachts.

To ensure operational safety against fire hazards, all the people on the yacht should undergo at least a basic training session for fighting fires at sea. They should familiarise with the operation of the equipment for fighting fires and every person should be assigned a particular responsibility in case of an unfortunate incident so as to avoid chaos and panic. Fire safety drills are also a must-have.

Another possible cause is human errors due to lack of training, especially in self-managed yachts when a qualified crew is not present. Crew familiarisation and training must be a mandate before sailing massive superyachts out to sea.

Complying with yacht fire protection protocols is incredibly important for safety and legal reasons both . From 2019, all new yachts must comply with the REG Yacht Code. The onus is on fire retardant service providers to ensure that their treatment on board REG Ensign certified vessels complies with the MGN 453, soon to be MGN 580. However, during inspection yachts will be asked to produce fire certificates to evidence that they are compliant.

Non-compliance of any of the required rules, standards or protocols can result in a vessel being detained until any fault or deficiency found is rectified (this obviously depends on the seriousness of the deficiency). Vessels are now being checked when entering ports for their certification and, depending on the port and country, vessels can be prevented from sailing, depending on the severity of the non-compliance.

Maintenance problems are another factor that comes into picture when talking about safety. There are numerous elements that can cause fires or physical harm if neglected or not maintained properly.

Despite all precautions, if a fire does indeed break out, the crew not only needs the training but also the right equipment to handle the disaster. Portable fire extinguishers are the best option for the job.

Fire Prevention

Even as you prepare for the worst, it is said prevention is always better than the cure. With the complication of on-board fuel storage and so many variables to consider, it seems like an impossible task to prevent every scenario of fuel fire. And this is where ATOM comes in.

ATOM enables on-board explosion protection and loss prevention through customised fuel storage that suppresses explosions within the fuel tanks. Moreover, with the increased transition to LPG bunkering, specialised infrastructure will be required for supply, storage, and fuel delivery to ships. ATOM’s solutions are designed to guarantee explosion-safe operation of bunkering vessels and truck tankers as well.

It is possible to prevent fuel explosions to a great extent when a standard safety system is universally adopted for fuel storage and transportation. At ATOM, we deliver sector-specific solutions across a range of industries for fuel storage, transportation, and delivery.

ATOM is an internationally certified patented Explosion Prevention system that works across industries to deliver safety solutions for fuel storage, transportation and delivery. If you are seeking preventive solutions tailored to meet the industry’s complexities that secure your workplace and resources from fuel tank explosions, we can introduce you to high-quality solutions that are compliant with international regulation standards and will upgrade your fuel safety to the highest levels. Singer Marc Anthony's Luxury Yacht Engulfed In Flames In Miami Marina

December 19, 2019 / 5:40 PM EST / CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A luxury yacht belonging to singer Marc Anthony has been destroyed by fire in Miami.

A spokeswoman for Anthony told CBS4'S Peter D'Oench that he was "out of the country and not commenting" about the fire. She said everyone on board got off the yacht safely and "that is all that matters."

The 120-foot yacht caught fire Wednesday night near the MacArthur Causeway just off the west end of Watson Island.

"When crews arrived there was heavy smoke, a lot of flames on this yacht," said Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll Jr. He said there were 7 crew members onboard the yacht and no one was injured.

In a new interview at the site Thursday afternoon, Carroll said, "As crews first approached the marina they noticed the amount of fire and heavy black smoke and they knew it was going to be a significant challenge for their land crews and so fire boats responded."

He said Miami Fire Rescue deployed 50 firefighters and they received help from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Miami Beach Fire Rescue. Both of those agencies deployed boats.

Carroll said it took at least 3 hours to bring the blaze under control.

He told D'Oench "I think one of the biggest challenges was maneuvering around boats to keep them from being damaged. You have a marina with some very expensive yachts that are parked there."

Byron Chenaly, A deckhand who was on board another yacht just 40 feet away, said there were some tense moments.

"It was a bit harsh," he said. "At that point, people were trying to get off their yachts. It was quite dangerous for anyone on the yachts."

The flames were clearly visible from Downtown Miami as smoke filled the sky over the Island Gardens Marina.

The relatively new marina is part of the long-delayed development of Watson Island.

With City of Miami and Miami-Dade fireboats deployed, the fire was fought from dockside and from the water.

They kept water on the smoldering 120-foot yacht that was listing to its side.

They worked primarily in a defensive mode, containing the fire while protecting a number of other yachts moored nearby.

It's not known what caused this fire.

"The cause is under investigation right now," said Carroll. There is severe damaged caused by the fire last night and so the boat is three-fourths submerged underwater right now. So the next phase is to get the boat uprighted and dry-docked so investigators can continue their investigation."

Crime scene investigators were seen at the Marina.

Carroll noted that "When you have a fire this significant you want to make sure that all of the bases are covered and that's why the police department is brought in to make sure that this is no more than just a simple fire."

Because it is early in the investigation, Carroll said nothing had been ruled out so far.

TMZ reported the yacht had been for sale earlier this year.

It was reportedly a $7 million yacht, with 5 cabins with sleeping room for 12 people. It also had a barbecue area with a jacuzzi and docking stations for jet skis and satellite TV and had been the site of several gatherings and parties.

As seen in videos it was also a place where the singer had celebrated his passion for music. Those videos showed happier moments, with Anthony dancing with friends.

Crews extinguish fire on yacht in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - A yacht that caught on fire behind a home in Fort Lauderdale prompted a swift response by rescue crews.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue units arrived at the scene on Marathon Lane in Fort Lauderdale’s Riverland neighborhood, Wednesday morning.

Smoke was seen coming from the 110-foot yacht’s lower decks.

7News cameras captured firefighters putting out the fire as they worked to keep the flames from spreading to other boats.

Area resident Scott Garten said his wife alerted him.

“When I was on the boat, my wife called me up, she said, ‘There’s fire trucks in the front,’ from the cameras,” said Garten, “but there’s no electrical, so I don’t know how it caught fire. It’s solar panels on there; I would think it’d be the battery chargers.”

No one was on board the yacht when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
