Sun Dolphin American 12 Jon Boat Review

Ian Fortey

When you’re in the market for a two-person fishing boat, the Sun Dolphin American 12 should definitely be on your list of boats to check out. This budget-friendly jon boat is a step up from the Sun Dolphin kayak and has a lot of features for the fisherman who just wants a simple and effective boat to get them out on the water and make their fishing trip easier and more convenient.

Features and Specifications

american 12 sailboat

While the Sun Dolphin is by no means a luxury vessel, it does offer up a lot of what you need for a solo trip out on the water, or if you have a partner. It’s small but well built and very efficient for when you need a boat that’s solid and gets the job done. Specs for the Sun Dolphin American 12 include:

  • Length: 144” or 12’
  • Width: 52” or 4’4”
  • Height: 21”
  • Weight Capacity: 532 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 110 lbs
  • HP Rating: 6 HP

In terms of features this is obviously a small vessel so you won’t be getting live wells, LED lighting or bilge pumps. However, it does offer up an incredibly sturdy and rugged design. Check out some of the most notable features it brings to the table.

  • Two large, bench seats ensure ample room for two to fish without getting in each other’s way once you’re out on the water.
  • The UV-stabilized deck and hull are made of a high density polyethylene known as Fortiflex. If the name isn’t familiar, just know that it’s tough and rugged and can stand up to more than its fair share of abuse.
  • The jon boat features closed cell polystyrene foam flotation which means the boat has the buoyancy you need but it’s also very lightweight at the same time.
  • Both the bow and stern of the Sun Dolphin have built in motor mounts, and there’s also built in battery storage as well.
  • In addition to those built in features you’ll also find built-in oarlock sockets, storage trays and rod holders as well. There are a total of four rod holder locations available which is decent for a boat of this size.
  • Sundolphin also offers a limited lifetime warranty on the boat’s deck and hull while components get one year of coverage. This doesn’t cover accidents or vandalism so it’s essentially a warranty against manufacturer defects.
  • Recessed drink and tackle holders to keep your stuff stable and secure
  • The vessel meats all coast guard safety standards
  • The boat’s hull is fade resistant, abrasion resistant and puncture resistant in addition to that UV resistance.

Design and Construction

american 12 sailboat

The overall design of the Sun Dolphin American 12 is a simple jon boat . Flat bottom, two bench seats, flat back and a modified V-bow. It’s nothing you wouldn’t expect from a small jon boat in terms of appearance.

In terms of construction, that durable hull material is what makes this a standout. An aluminum hull is obviously going to be one of the sturdiest hulls you can get but it does come with a pumped up price tag. For those boaters who don’t want to invest in aluminum and are looking for a synthetic hull, the Sun Dolphin’s Fortifex hull is a decent product that is better able to handle some rough waters and scrapes than other polymer hulls I have seen.

The material is touted as being abrasion and puncture resistant and of course that doesn’t mean proof. It will still suffer some abrasions and scrapes but those smaller ones that will scuff up a cheaper quality boat won’t have as big an effect here. So if your concerns lie in balancing cost against quality, you’ll find a good middle ground with how this vessel is constructed.

The other strength of the materials used in this construction beyond durability and resistance is that weight. It’s really lightweight despite that solid structure and that means it’s easy to get in and out of the water, easy to clean and easy to transport. For some this may work best with a dolly, or you may want a second person to help, but depending on your physical abilities you may be able to move this around pretty easily all on your own as well.

Versatility

american 12 sailboat

At this size and layout, it’s 100% clear that the Sun Dolphin American 12 is a fishing boat. It’s designed just for this purpose so it’s not like you’ll be using this for day cruising with the family or anything of that sort.

There’s definitely enough room for two people to use the boat comfortably so it’s ideally suited for fishing with a friend, a father-son trip, a day out on the lake with a special someone or even just you and the dog having a relaxing afternoon on the water.

For a single person it’s more than roomy and it’s not too hard to manage alone by any means. The bench seats are very plain and I wouldn’t call them comfortable but they’re not terrible, either. They do the job efficiently enough and after a few hours you might find your backside a little sore.

Since it’s only rated for a 6 HP motor you can see it’s not a powerhouse but nor should it be. It handles still waters well but if things get choppy you’ll find it’s a little harder to manage.

Performance

american 12 sailboat

I got to try out a Sun Dolphin American 12 last summer and let me just say I was legitimately surprised. A lot of times you might think a smaller vessel with a plastic hull is kind of cheap and forgettable but this boat really is sturdy and solid on the water.

If there’s one thing you want to be wary of, it’s how you distribute your weight on the boat. If there are two people on board and one is significantly heavier than the other, the situation can get a little unstable. But if you’re careful about how you organize yourselves and your gear it should be okay. Just be careful of movements if the weight is a little off.

You can manage this with a 4 hp trolling motor easily enough but I think the recommended 6 HP is the way to go. This is where weight distribution really becomes important. With a 6 hp motor mounted you may find yourself really lagging still. It’s not unheard of to pull just 8 mph or so with a 6 hp motor mounted. You should be able to do more and you can do more, you just need to be aware of how the boat is working.

If you’re alone and sitting at the stern, you are going to be weighing that thing down, it’s inevitable. Don’t waste your time trying to adjust your position and angle, it won’t matter. You’re just going to need to balance the load. This is where a dog or a child passenger really comes in handy but, failing that, make sure you have a cooler filled with stuff or some other gear that can at least partially counter your weight. If you get the boat balanced you can boost a lagging 8 mph to a much more reasonable 15 mph.

Worth noting if you’re a big guy like I am, and your friend is also a bigger guy, you will balance the boat but you’ll definitely be slowing down again. The total weight capacity on the boat is just over 500 lbs but the closer you creep to that the slower you will definitely find yourself going.

As far as maneuverability goes, I recommend getting your trolling motor mounted up on the bow. The boat handles really well with a bow mount and you can maneuver through tight places with ease, as you’d expect with a boat mounted trolling motor.

In general, maneuverability is about what you’d expect from a jon boat if you’re working with a standard stern mounted outboard.

Comfort and Convenience

american 12 sailboat

One thing I will mention about convenience here, or the lack thereof, is cleats. The boat doesn’t have cleats. It’s easy enough to add your own, of course, and you should add some so you can dock it more easily. But it’d be nice if it had cleats already so keep that in mind.

On the flip side, a very convenient aspect of this boat is how light and easy to manage it is. You can transport and store this very easily. If you have a garage at home there’s no doubt you can find some space to stash this when you’re not using it which is super convenient. A small trailer, some sturdy racks or shelves, there are lots of options that work well with this particular jon boat.

The boat is lightweight as you can see at just 110 lbs but that can definitely be on the heavier side for some people depending on their own physical limitations. You may want to use a dolly to move it about and something as simply as a kayak dolly works well here if need be.

The seats, as I mentioned above, are not built for extended comfort. I know some people like to straddle a bench seat but that is not recommended here. The benches are pretty wide and that seems like it’s a benefit, but if you try to straddle them you’re going to feel some discomfort pretty quickly, especially if you have shorter legs.

Ideally, I’d recommend installing a seat instead of just relying on the bench. If you plan on getting a lot of use out of this boat then it would be worth the investment.

Safety and Reliability

american 12 sailboat

The hull really is durable and more so than you might think. Not that you’d want to be taking a boat like this into rapids or banging against rocks. For everyday wear and tear it’s strong and reliable and will stand up to most of what you’d expect and a little more as well.

The closed cell polystyrene foam flotation really strikes a good balance between overall boat weight and buoyancy. It will hang a little low as you approach that 500 lb weight limit but it still performs well enough when the weight is properly distributed and you can’t ask for more than that.

In terms of safety, I have to mention again that the boat can get a little wobbly when the weight is not well distributed so be aware of that. As always, you should make sure you have a life jacket on at all times and if you’re out with little ones on this boat you absolutely want to make sure they are wearing a life jacket too. I know it’s most likely being used on smaller lakes and in shallow waters but safety should always be the priority.

If you plan on taking the boat out in the early morning or the evening, do put some consideration into getting a small portable light.

Pros vs Cons

american 12 sailboat

There’s a lot to consider when looking at this Sun Dolphin jon boat so let’s break it down in a simple pros vs cons comparison.

  • Great price for the size and compared to similarly sized boats
  • Durable hull stands up to reasonable wear and tear really well
  • Decent space for one or two people
  • From and back motor mount is conveninent
  • Lightweight makes for easy cleaning, transport and storage
  • Good maneuverability
  • Drink holders and storage isn’t fancy but is convenient and well placed given the boat’s design
  • Not the most comfortable experience you’ll have on the water if you use these seats for a few hours
  • Sturdiness is a little suspect if the weight distribution is off
  • Harder to steer than it should be given the position of the bench seats relative to wear you’ll mount your motor
  • Needs some cleats
  • The speed is going to suffer the closer you get to that weight limit which is pretty low overall

Who Do We Recommend it To?

If you’re a casual fisherman who doesn’t want a ton of bells and whistles with a boat, definitely look into the lightweight Sun Dolphin American 12. It’s ideal for those who want to go out alone or maybe with a friend or a child every so often. Fishing or duck hunting expeditions will be well served.

If your interest is in something that’s really easy to use, stress free and you can store it wherever and whenever, this is definitely a recommended choice. If it’s well maintained I’m pretty sure this boat could easily last you many seasons with only minor visible wear and tear that shouldn’t impede performance at all.

In a nutshell, I’d recommend this boat to those who value the following:

  • Ease of use
  • Stress free fishing/boating

Overall Value

The Sun Dolphin American 12 is a budget fishing boat that offers some good value for the money. You can find this boat for about $750 brand new but you do need to buy your own motor separately. That said, a quality trolling motor will not set you back too badly.

Obviously I think an aluminum hull boat, something like a Tracker Grizzly , is going to offer more durability overall but if we’re looking at just value for money here, I can’t trash talk this Sun Dolphin. It’s a lot sturdier than you’d think a boat would be at this price point, it performs well when the weight is balanced, it’s super easy to use and transport and it checks a lot of boxes you’ll need for a simple, low cost jon boat.

It would score higher points for me if it had a better maximum weight capacity than it does, and if the seats were made more comfortable. But those are small quibbles as they can be managed well enough. This is a small boat, after all, so there’s only so much you can expect for weight capacity anyway.

It may not be the fanciest boat on the water but it’s durable enough to last you over several seasons and compared to other small jon boats, including some of the higher priced aluminum models, this one holds its own. If you want a basic jon boat that does what it promises but is also easier on your wallet, I’d give this one a second look. It’s definitely recommended.

Pelican Intruder 12 Vs. Sun Dolphin American 12 Fishing Boat

Pelican Intruder 12 and Sun Dolphin American 12 are the two most popular fishing boats in recent times though they have differences in width, weight capacity, price, material, etc.

It’s crucial to consider where you intend to fish, how many people will be on board, the degree of your boating experience, and which models offer the amenities you require while searching for a new fishing boat.

In this article, you will get an in-depth analysis of these two, so make sure you read it to the end.

A Quick Comparison Table

This quick comparison table will give you a fast understanding of Pelican Intruder 12 and Sun Dolphin American 12-

Key Differences Between Pelican Intruder 12 And Sun Dolphin American 12 Fishing Boat

Here’s an in-depth analysis of these two fishing boats so that you can choose the right one for you:

  • Company Reputation and History

Pelican Intruder 12 Fishing Boat

It’s important to know the company’s history and reputation while purchasing any product because it’s natural that a good company serves the best products to the customers.

Since 1968, Pelican has extended an invitation to you to explore your surroundings, travel the great streams, rivers, and lakes nearby, and take in the untamed majesty of nature both locally and globally.

Pelican has established itself as the leading global authority in the idea and production of kayaks, canoes, pedal boats, stand-up paddle boards (SUP), fishing boats, and water sports accessories.

Pelican is renowned for its superior quality, innovation, and knowledge. They provide a wide range of items to both paddle sports enthusiasts and regular outdoor lovers.

On the other hand, Sun Dolphin started as a small, family-run company in 1982, producing just one two-person pedal boat. Since then, they have developed into the top producer of kayaks and other outdoor leisure goods in North America.

Their hometown of Muskegon, Michigan, has experienced significant growth over the years, but it has maintained its small-town charm. So, compared to that, Pelican is a much bigger and historically renowned company.

  • Boat’s Weight

When designing a boat, a variety of parameters must be considered, including length, beam, draft, weight, amenities, and power. The goals of the designer will determine which variables are most crucial.

Being lightweight is essential for maximum speed. Boats are extremely comparable to each other based on weight.

Between these two boats, Sun Dolphin American 12 is more lightweight than Pelican Intruder 12. So, if you want maximum speed, choose Sun Dolphin. However, a heavy-weight boat also has some advantages because a very light, very fast boat can be tricky to control in choppy water. Unless a boat buyer is experienced in managing high-performance boats, a little bit more weight and a little less top speed is typically the best option.

So, if you’re a newbie, s heavier, more comfortable boat like Pelican Intruder 12 would be the best choice for you.

  • Cost Variation

One of the primary questions that might come to your mind when you decide to buy a boat is, ‘how much will the boat cost?’ Well, you can not just have that answer instantly.

You must consider mooring and storage costs, fuel, insurance, license costs, maintenance, and many other expenses. To transport your boat, you might also require a trailer.

But keeping all those expenses aside, if we compare the price of Pelican Intruder 12 and Sun Dolphin American 12, we can see almost a $400 difference between them.

Pelican Intruder 12 costs around $1,160.43, while the Sun Dolphin American 12 costs $749.99. So if you have a tight budget, go for the Sun Dolphin.

  • Build Material

Sun Dolphin American 12 Fishing Boat

Build material is another crucial factor for fishing boats.

Pelican Intruder is built with RAM-X™ (HDPE) material. It is a brand-specific term for a type of very high-density polyethylene.

Additionally, to have excellent UV resistance, it has very outstanding impact resistance and memory properties.

It will shine and maintain its shape even after being outside with the bottom up for almost five years.

Sun Dolphin American 12 is also built with high-density polyethylene. Though RAM-X is a type of high-density polyethylene, Ram-X is slightly better.

  • Customer Reviews

Customer reviews for Pelican and Sun Dolphin are both good, but reviews for Sun Dolphin are more positive. They often say that this boat is amazing and love this boat. Despite its lightweight, it can easily transport two persons and so many accessories.

But the only thing they don’t like is that the center and forward areas cannot be drained since water cannot enter the rear section, which has the drain stopper. This complaint can be found for Pelican Intruder 12 also.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Pelican intruder 12 is 122 cm or 48 inches wide. The item dimensions LxWxH is ‎144 x 48 x 17 inches.

The most durable aluminum boats are War Eagle Boats. They are stronger than any other aluminum boat, as it is entirely welded and made from strong gauge aluminum.

Sun Dolphin boat is 12ft (144 inches or 366 cm) long.

Sun Dolphin boats are constructed of durable UV-stabilized Fortiflex® high-density polyethylene. Their boats are practical for individuals who need to shore launch or don’t want the inconvenience of dealing with a trailer. They are also easy to move.

Final Words

However, buying a boat for the first time can seem like a daunting task. When purchasing your first fishing boat, there are many factors you need to consider, such as the type of water you’ll be fishing or the speed you’re looking for.

Now that you have the details about Pelican Intruder 12 vs. Sun Dolphin American 12, it should be easier for you to make the right decision. And do not forget to get the documentation properly once you’ve decided to buy your selected fishing boat.

Best Small Fishing Boats

The Best Small Fishing Boats of 2024

Small crafts will get you out fishing without the massive bills that come with owning a boat

We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Learn more ›

Small fishing boats are often just as capable as larger ones that cost quadruple the price. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford to take out a loan to buy the latest fiberglass bass boat or a deep-v hull offshore craft. Even if they can afford it, some anglers aren’t interested in a larger boat, especially if the brunt of their fishing is on small lakes and streams. Another factor is simply that some anglers might not have a vehicle large enough to tow a bigger dedicated fishing boat.

The good news is that there are options out there to fit a variety of fishing styles, scenarios, and budgets. From the latest in fishing kayaks to singe-person bass boats, we’ve narrowed down the best of the best so you can focus more on fishing. Here are our top picks for the best small fishing boats being made today.

  • Best Overall: Apex Marine Gamefisher
  • Best Budget: Pelican Intruder 12
  • Best for Lake Fishing: Pelican Bass Raider 10E
  • Best for Bays and Estuaries: Old Town Sportsman PDL
  • Best One Man: Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler 8
  • Best for Two People: Sun Dolphin American 12′ Jon boat

How We Picked the Best Small Fishing Boats

As a lifelong fisherman, I have had the privilege of fishing from a variety of watercraft over the years—large and small. Some of which could be considered the top boats made today. I used that experience to guide my choices here. Some of the craft here I’ve either fished from personally or I’ve used a similar model in the past. Additionally, I compared key features of many of these boats to help make my decisions. Among the most important considerations considered include:

  • Length and width: How big is the boat? How much of that space is usable? Is the boat wide enough to stand up in?
  • Weight: Does this boat require a trailer? Or is this craft light enough to toss in the back of a pickup truck?
  • Fishing-specific features: Does this boat have rod holders? Live wells? Or is it a bare-bones boat ripe for customization?
  • Construction: What materials were used in the construction of this boat, and how durable is it?

Best Small Fishing Boats: Reviews and Recommendations

Apex Marine Gamefisher

Key Features

  • Length: 14’
  • Weight: N/A
  • Weight Capacity: 625 Pounds
  • Strong, one-piece hull
  • Great weight capacity
  • Requires a trailer

The wide hull of the Gamefisher is made from a single piece of aluminum which gives it great strength and stability. This is a boat built to bounce off stumps, rocks, and whatever else the angler can throw at it in the shallows. Because this boat has a mostly open floor plan, it’s ideal for modifications too. There are three bench seats already included, but it is easy to add some aftermarket swivel seats.

While user reviews note it is light enough to be carried by two people, the boat’s length almost necessitates a trailer, which is an extra expense for anglers who don’t already own one. However, this boat offers more in versatility than most other options on the market. For instance, it’s rather easy to add a blind for waterfowl hunting, making this a good option for all-around outdoorsmen and women.

Pelican Intruder 12

  • Length: 144”
  • Weight: 126 Pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 420 Pounds
  • A lot of boat for the price
  • Extremely stable
  • Weight capacity seems low for a craft this size

The plastic Intruder is a solid lightweight Jon boat that comes with a great price tag. At just under $700, the Intruder has a simple, but highly versatile design. This boat can easily be modified with seats, rod holders, and fish finders. It is a good option for anglers who want something that could transition seamlessly to waterfowl hunting. While this is a 12-foot boat, the weight is only 126 pounds, making it easy for two anglers to quickly load into the back of a larger pickup.

Our only downside for the Intruder is the 420-pound weight capacity seems a little on the low side for a 12-foot boat. It should handle two anglers for a day at the lake just fine. More than that, plus gear might be pushing things. However, for fishermen on a budget, this is a highly versatile craft.

Pelican Bass Raider 10E NXT

  • Length: 122”
  • Weight: 145 Pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 600 Pounds
  • Easy to modify
  • Incredibly stable
  • Excellent price point
  • Some reported shipping issues

The Pelican Bass Raider is one of the most popular plastic bass boats on the market today. It has developed a rather dedicated following from those who like customizing boats to suit specific fishing styles. With a minimum weight capacity of 600 pounds, this boat can easily hold two adults for a day of fishing, plus all the gear you might want. While it doesn’t come with a live well or rod holders, they are rather easy to add after the fact. We also like the Bass Raider for the shallow draft. Another bonus is that it is already wired up for an electronic motor and marine electronics.

A common problem reported in user reviews is boats shipped with subpar packaging. Some users have reported receiving damaged craft . Another problem was some users didn’t get a title with their shipment. This becomes an issue when trying to register in some states. However, for $1,000, there is much that can be done with this boat.

Old Town Sportsman PDL

  • Length: 12’
  • Weight: 116 Pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 500 Pounds
  • PDL drive seamlessly transitions between forward and reverse
  • Rugged construction

A kayak makes an excellent choice for inshore angling on bays and estuaries, and Old Town produces some of the best in the business. I’ve used Old Town’s kayaks in both inland lakes and mangrove flats, and I am always amazed at their stability. The biggest selling point of the PDL line is the pedal drive system. This drive can seamlessly transition from backwards and forwards simply by reversing pedaling motions. Not every pedal kayak on the market can do that. I love how this kayak leaves my hands free to cast and fight fish while still being able to navigate. I find the Sportsman PDL to be very rugged—I’ve run the drive system aground, into logs, and I’ve wrapped the prop in weeds many times without issue. Pedaling in reverse usually clears the tangle.

Fishing Gear photo

The biggest downsides to this kayak are the $2,700 price tag and the 116-pound weight. It’s not an easy kayak to get into the water or onto a trailer by yourself. And you can forget about wrestling it onto a rooftop rack. However, the stability and ease of navigating make this boat of the best kayaks on the planet.

Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler 8

  • Length: 8’ 7”
  • Weight: 100 Pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 515 Pounds
  • Compact and easy to transport
  • Great price point
  • Already wired for a trolling motor
  • No front lift handle
  • Seat doesn’t lock down

The Prowler is a simple little boat that is perfect for solo anglers. Because of the compact design, this boat slides into the back of a pickup rather easily. The flat bottom allows anglers to get back into shallow areas that other boats can’t reach. This boat also boasts an impressive 515-pound weight capacity that makes it comfortable for anglers of all sizes despite the boat being less than nine feet long. Much like the Pelican Bass Raider, this boat is often heavily modified by users. The polyethylene construction is basically a blank slate for anglers looking to build the ultimate tiny bass rig.

One downside mentioned in user reviews is the lack of a carry handle on the front. It can make transporting a little more difficult. The seats also don’t lock down, and several user reviews mentioned minor problems with the seat shifting on them when they leaned over to get in their tackle box or land a fish.

Best for Two People: Sundolphin American 12′ Jon Boat

Sundolphin American 12' Jon Boat

  • Weight: 110 Pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 532 Pounds
  • Lightweight
  • Extremely affordable
  • No enclosed storage spaces

This Jon boat’s width and flat bottom make it an excellent choice for two anglers. The Sundolphin only weighs 110 pounds, making it easy to slide into a trailer or the back of a pickup truck. It has four built-in rod holders and multiple cup holders molded into the polyethylene hull. The boat’s materials also make it easy to hose and wipe down at the end of a long day of fishing.

The biggest downside to this boat is that there are no enclosed storage areas, which is a dealbreaker for some. That also means a battery for a trolling motor will need to sit on the deck exposed to the elements. However, for a boat of this size, the sub $800 price tag is hard to beat.

What to Consider When Buying a Small Fishing Boat

With the price of almost everything being extremely high right now, most anglers are turning to a smaller boat. But not all boats are created equal. If you want to fish saltwater flats, a long, wide specialized fishing kayak makes more sense than a flat-bottomed Jon boat. On the flip side, most small aluminum boats work best for inland lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. For intercoastal fisheries, select a craft built to withstand the corrosive saltwater environment. Don’t forget to always rinse your craft thoroughly after each trip in saltwater to extend the life of the craft.

Storage and Transport

The biggest benefit of a smaller boat is that it is easier to store and transport. However, it’s still important to take stock of how much storage space you have in your garage before you buy. Storing your boat inside will significantly increase the life of the craft. Try to figure out your storage options before you buy to avoid unwanted headaches.

Another factor some fishermen and women neglect is how to transport the new craft to the water. Smaller bass boats and kayaks are sometimes easily transported in a pickup bed. However, if you’re like me, you might find yourself needing to purchase a small trailer for transport. This can mean buying and installing a hitch if you don’t already have one.

Depending on the state, you may need to register the trailer too. Here in Michigan, a smaller kayak trailer under 2,500 pounds doesn’t require a plate. However, if you’re planning to buy a smaller aluminum boat that requires a heavier towing system, you may need to put plans in your budget for getting a plate.

Motors and Batteries

Unless you plan to paddle, pedal, or row your small fishing boat, you will also need to invest in a motor and possibly a marine battery . Most smaller boats can be powered by a simple trolling motor, but that adds another $150 to $1,500 just in motor costs alone. While a cheap trolling motor can do the job, the battery can add on another $150 to $500 depending on whether it is a lithium, absorbed glass mat (AGM), or lead acid battery. Small, simple outboard motors can go for anywhere from $250 to $1,800, depending on the make and model. However, the good news is that for a small 10 to 12-foot boat, most anglers don’t need a super fancy motor.

Registration and Other Legalities

Registration for small fishing boats is often unnecessary if the craft is non-motorized. That means most kayaks, canoes, and rowboats are often exempt from licensing and other regulations. In most states, you only need to register a boat if you add a small motor, whether it be a trolling motor or outboard. There is a ton of variation here from state to state, so be sure to review your state’s rules before you head out for the first time. Although some small boats may not require registration, many states still require you to have life vests and preservers for everyone on board. Most states also require some sort of running lights if you plan to fish after dark or near dawn or dusk. Fortunately, there are some cheap options for boat lighting online.

Q: Are small boats safe?

Small boats are perfectly safe as long as they are not overloaded or used in poor weather conditions. Pay attention to the weight limits of each craft. Besides having the proper number of life vests onboard for the number of passengers, be sure to read the owner’s manual thoroughly. The manual will have safety information specific to the boat, including conditions to avoid.

Q: What is the most stable boat for fishing?

In most cases, a wide, flat-bottom boat will usually be the most stable. Although manufacturers have become more sophisticated in their designs and many modern fishing kayaks also offer incredible stabilization in a very narrow package. However, a good rule of thumb is that the wider the hull, the more stable the boat will be. Consequently, this is why so many modern fishing boats have wider, more stable platforms regardless of the size of the overall craft.

Q: How long do small fishing boats last on average?

This depends on the type of boat and how well it is maintained. I have relatives and friends who have owned the same aluminum boats for decades. Two of my plastic kayaks are over 12 years old and still floating. Storing your small boat indoors in the winter months will help increase its lifespan considerably. With plastic boats, avoid exposure to sunlight, as UV light can bleach and ruin the color. Don’t forget to winterize the motor before putting the boat into extended storage at the end of the season. Properly maintained, there’s no reason a small fishing boat shouldn’t last 15-25 years.

Best Small Fishing Boats: Final Thoughts

While it might seem like larger boats are all you hear about these days, there is still a market for small fishing boats. Many anglers are re-discovering the effectiveness of a simple Jon boat like the Apex Marine’s shallow draft for reaching hidden spots that no one else can get to. Additionally, these smaller crafts are simply a more cost-effective way to get on the water without totally breaking the bank.

‍ There's no denying that sailors are certainly a passionate bunch. We’re so passionate about our boats that we always try going for the best sailboats. To make it a lot easier for you, here are the best sailboat brands.

Owning a sailboat is an indulgence that many of us only dream about but very few ever have the privilege of sailing the seas in what they can actually call their own.

While there's nothing wrong with renting a sailboat, the honor of owning one is certain what many sailors dream of.

With a perfectly crafted sailboat as company, gliding through the water, waves, and wind brings some sort of unmatched comfort and peace.

Add this to the fact that sailing takes you far away from the daily hustles and bustles that we've become accustomed to in our daily lives and you'll see why the life of sailing is very appealing to the masses.

But without a proper sailboat, all this fun and the good life of sailing are thrown out of the window.

Contrary to the widespread opinion, owning a sailboat isn't beyond anyone's reach. It's something that we can all achieve. But before getting into that, it's important to know some of the best sailboat brands.

Table of contents

‍ Must-Have Features for Your Sailboat

Before highlighting the best sailboat brands, it would be appropriate to jog your mind a little with some of the features that must be available in your sailboat.

Choosing a sailboat can sometimes be a matter of compromises. In other words, it's sometimes sensible to accept that a sailboat cannot have all the features that you desire.

As such, it's all about going with a sailboat that has the features that matter to you most.

For this reason, let's look at the most basic features that can make the difference in both safety and comfort while improving your sailing experience.

A Safe and Comfortable Sailing Cockpit

You'll most definitely be spending a huge amount of time in the cockpit. Whether you're keeping watch, trimming sails , helming, or just enjoying the scenery, there's no better place to do all these than from the cockpit. That being said, a good cockpit should have the following.

  • Have a good depth for safety reasons and adequate drainage
  • Should give you a quick and easy access to jammers, cleats, and other important parts of the winch system
  • Should have a seat or seats that are about 35 cm high, 50 to 55 cm wide to provide ideal support
  • The seats should be adjustable to offer maximum comfort and allow you to change your position

GPS Chartplotter

Use a GPS Chartplotter once and your sailing will never be the same without it. It not only allows you to map a course but is also a great way of ensuring that your sailboat exactly follows that course. It also gives you constant updates on ocean conditions, weather conditions , and potential hazards such as deadly currents and sandbars.

A GPS Chartplotter is also an important safety device that can help you in some very critical situations while out there on the water.

For instance, it has a man-overboard button that is essentially meant to allow you to receive coordinates of the exact location should someone fall off your boat.

Electric Winch System

This is an amazing addition to any sailboat. It allows you to sheet a jib even in high and strong winds with a simple press of a button. It also gives you the chance of trimming a mainsail easily while still carry out other essential tasks in the sailboat.

An electric winch system can be of great importance, especially if you're short on crew. This is because it can free up some crew members to carry other important tasks. In other words, it can make duties that would otherwise require more crew members a lot easier.

More importantly, an electric winch system can maintain safety even in the roughest of conditions, thereby preventing you and your crew from getting injured. In essence, an electric winch system will make your sailing a lot safer, less stressful, and more enjoyable.

Reverse Osmosis Watermaker

This is a very valuable accessory, especially if you're going on long sea voyages. You can spend days on end without drinking clean and safe water.

As the name suggests, you can use this accessory to turn seawater into purified drinking water. It uses the reverse osmosis method that's essential not only in removing bacteria and parasites from the water but also in turning the water into purified and safe drinking water.

Even though this device is pricey, it's a great way to mitigate the over-reliance on huge water tanks. All you have to do is to ensure that it's properly maintained and you'll have an endless streak of safe drinking water no matter where you are.

Wide and Clutter-free Deck

While the deck is often an overlooked feature of a sailboat, it can be the difference between a great sailing experience and a stressful one. In essence, the deck of a sailboat should be wide enough and clutter-free.

This is significant as it can enable you to quickly access different parts of your sailboat with hindrance or getting tangled. As you can see, this is particularly important in improving safety and reducing stress.

With that in mind, make sure that the deck is organized in such a way that you can have easy access to sails, masts, and winches.

You should, therefore, avoid sailboats with decks that are designed in such a way that you have to climb on top of the cabin just to access these features. Needless to say, this can be quite unstable and very dangerous especially when conditions are rough.

Sailor Cole Brauer makes history as the first American woman to race solo around the world

Aboard her 40-foot racing boat First Light ,  29-year-old Cole Brauer just became the first American woman to race nonstop around the world by herself.

The New York native pulled into A Coruña, Spain, on Thursday after a treacherous 30,000-mile journey that took 130 days.

She thanked a cheering crowd of family and fans who had been waiting for her on shore.

“This is really cool and so overwhelming in every sense of the word,” she exclaimed, before drinking Champagne from her trophy.

The 5-foot-2 powerhouse placed second out of 16 avid sailors who competed in the Global Solo Challenge, a circumnavigation race that started in A Coruña with participants from 10 countries. The first-of-its-kind event   allowed a wide range of boats to set off in successive departures based on performance characteristics. Brauer started on Oct. 29, sailing down the west coast of Africa, over to Australia, and around the tip of South America before returning to Spain.

Brauer is the only woman and the youngest competitor in the event — something she hopes young girls in and out of the sport can draw inspiration from.

“It would be amazing if there was just one girl that saw me and said, ‘Oh, I can do that too,’” Brauer said of her history-making sail.

It’s a grueling race, and more than half of the competitors have dropped out so far. One struck something that caused his boat to flood, and another sailor had to abandon his ship after a mast broke as a severe storm was moving in.

The four-month journey is fraught with danger, including navigating the three “Great Capes” of Africa, Australia and South America. Rounding South America’s Cape Horn, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet, is often likened to climbing Mount Everest because of its perfect storm of hazards — a sharp rise in the ocean floor and whipping westerly winds push up massive waves. Combined with the frigid waters and stray icebergs, the area is known as a graveyard for ships, according to NASA. Brauer  said  she was “so unbelievably stoked” when she sailed past Cape Horn in January.

Marco Nannini, organizer of the Global Solo Challenge, said the comparison to scaling Mount Everest doesn’t capture the difficulty of the race. Sailing solo means not just being a skipper but a project manager — steering the boat, fixing equipment, understanding the weather and maintaining one’s physical health.

Nannini cited the relatively minuscule number of people who have sailed around the world solo — 186, according to the International Association of Cape Horners — as evidence of the challenges that competitors face. More than 6,000 people have climbed Mount Everest, according to  High Adventure Expeditions .

Brauer stared down 30-foot waves that had enough force to throw her across the boat. In a scare caught on camera, she badly injured her rib   near the halfway point of the event. At another point, her team in the U.S. directed Brauer to insert an IV into her own arm due to dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea.

She was able to stay in constant communication with members of her team, most of whom are based in New England,   and keep herself entertained with Netflix and video calls with family through Starlink satellites.   That’s also how Brauer was able to use Zoom to connect with NBC News for an interview, while she was sailing about 1,000 miles west of the Canary Islands.

While Brauer was technically alone on First Light, she had the company of 450,000 followers on Instagram, where she frequently got candid about life on an unforgiving sea while reflecting on her journey.

“It all makes it worth it when you come out here, you sit on the bow, and you see how beautiful it is,” she said in an Instagram video, before panning the camera to reveal the radiant sunrise.

Brauer grew up on Long Island but didn’t learn to sail until she went to college in Hawaii. She traded in her goal of becoming a doctor for life on the water. But she quickly learned making a career as a sailor is extremely difficult, with professional racers often hesitant to welcome a 100-pound young woman on their team.

Even when she was trying to find sponsors for the Global Solo Challenge, she said a lot of people “wouldn’t touch her with a 10-foot pole” because they saw her as a “liability.”

Brauer’s message to the skeptics and naysayers? “Watch me.”

“I push so much harder when someone’s like, ‘No, you can’t do that,’ or ‘You’re too small,’” Brauer explained.

“The biggest asset is your mental strength, not the physical one,” Nannini said. “Cole is showing everyone that.”

Brauer hopes to continue competing professionally and is already eyeing another around-the-world competition, but not before she gets her hands on a croissant and cappuccino.

“My mouth is watering just thinking about that.”

East Hampton graduate Cole Brauer is first American woman to solo circumnavigate the globe in a sailboat

Racing around the world has long been an aspiration of Cole Brauer, who grew up on the East End of Long Island with the ocean so close.

“I just wanted to get out on the water," said Brauer, 29.

Thursday, she made history by becoming the first American woman to solo circumnavigate the world in a nonstop sailboat race.

"I'd always wanted to race around the world, because I wanted to be able to be offshore, without anybody around, just kind of like in that Puritan type of style, no building, no cars, no nothing, just really beautiful ocean weather," she told Newsday in an interview Saturday.

For her parents, it was far from easy to wait out the 130-day, near-30,000-mile voyage, her dad, East Hampton native David Brauer, confessed.

"It's been hell," Brauer, 59, now of Trevett, Maine, said Friday in a phone call from A Coruña, Spain. "A lot of sleepless nights."

On Thursday, her place in the books was sealed when she sailed her 40-foot sailboat into the harbor at A Coruña, on the northern Atlantic coast of Spain, finishing second among more than a dozen sailors competing in the Global Solo Challenge. She also became one in a field of fewer than 200 elite sailors — and just the 18th woman ever — to solo circumnavigate the globe nonstop, according to a register maintained by the International Association of Cape Horners.

Cole Brauer left A Coruña in October to begin her quest in the staggered-start field, sailing south along the west coast of Africa, then around the Cape of Good Hope and east to Australia. She traversed the Pacific, sailing around Cape Horn at the tip of South America and continuing across the Atlantic aboard her sailboat, named First Light.

Along the way, the 5-foot-2, 100-pound 2012 graduate of East Hampton High School got her ribs battered when she slammed into the cabin walls during a storm that generated 30-foot seas, and she had to self-administer an IV after becoming dangerously dehydrated.

She's has had to be able to handle any challenge that came her way. There really was no other way.

"You just know the boat, and you know when she's not happy, and you learn very quickly how to make her happy ... because I'm on the boat, and I have full control, I never felt like, 'Oh, I need to go to shore, oh, this and that is happening.' Things were breaking, but I had planned exactly what I needed to have for spares and tools, and even if I didn't, you just learn how to, you know, use a hammer for five different types of tools because you don't have the actual tool," she said in the interview.

After months at sea on an arduous journey, she and her teammates are resting — finally — and celebrating.

"The whole team is here. I finished two days ago, so we've mostly been popping bottles of champagne, and I've been eating like I've never eaten in my entire life," she said. "We're just enjoying a couple days as an entire team, just a big celebration after a long, long six months of our lives, and then we all go home."

Dawn Riley, executive director of the Oakcliff Sailing Center in Oyster Bay and the first woman to be a crew member in an America's Cup race, said, "It is incredible how she has made it around [the world] and made it look so easy to her hundreds of thousands of followers."

Brauer grew up on Springs Fireplace Road in East Hampton, off Accabonac Creek near Gardiners Island and Gardiners Bay.

Though David Brauer said Cole first learned sailing basics as a young teen on small Sunfish-type sailboats, it was her twin sister, Dalton, who was a member of the sailing club at East Hampton High School. It wasn't until Cole Brauer went to the University of Hawaii to train to be a doctor following a year studying photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design that she seriously became involved in sailing — setting the hook that would lead her to ocean racing.

"She was an artsy kid," East Hampton Union Free School District Superintendent Adam Fine said Friday of Cole. "She was a gifted photographer — and I still have a picture Cole gave me in my office . . . this beautiful, religious figure, draped in darkness and streaming light."

David Brauer said his daughters have always been strong-willed and confident, and noted Dalton also is a skilled sailor and sailing instructor.

Still, he said the toughest time for him and his wife, as parents, was fear of the unknown.

Brauer said at the last-minute prior to setting out on the Global Challenge, Cole learned she still needed more solo mileage to qualify for the race, and as a result had to sail First Light solo across the Atlantic from Newport, Rhode Island, to A Coruña just to qualify.

Then, there was the treacherous four months at sea solo.

He said being able to talk to Cole almost daily via a satellite phone was a blessing. But, he said: "While it takes a lot of angst out of the day, being able to see her, the scariest thing was when we'd be talking and there'd be a sound and she'd say, 'I have to go check something outside,' and then she'd pop out the cabin door and disappear. Most of the time on deck she'd be tethered to the boat. But with something like that, she'd just pop out, and I'd be sitting there, waiting, thinking: 'Where is she? Did she fall off the damn boat?'

"Trust me. That was hell."

The Brauers flew to Spain ahead of Cole's arrival Thursday and were on a boat that met her sailboat two miles outside the harbor — aptly, at dawn — then followed her as she sailed in on First Light.

David Brauer said his brother, who's a commercial airline pilot, named his own daughter Amelia Mayday Brauer after Amelia Earhart, and that he thought of the failed quest of the famed aviator as he followed Cole's circumnavigation to its successful end.

"I was trying to think of all the other women who have accomplished firsts," David Brauer said, "and now I think, 'Wow, my daughter is among them.' When we finally got to land? There were some tears, for sure. And a lot of joy ... It's all just so incredible."

Fewer than 200 people have ever sailed solo non-stop around the world. Cole Brauer is the only American woman among them.

The 29-year-old completed the 30,000-mile journey last week when she stepped off her 40-foot sailboat, First Light, and onto dry land after 130 days at sea. Brauer was the only woman out of 16 boats that competed in the race, the Global Solo Challenge, this year. She finished the race, which began in late October, on March 7 in Spain.

9 questions with Cole Brauer

What is it like to walk on land after 130 days at sea?

"Everyone really thought that I was going to like trip or stumble and people were really concerned about me. My dad even kind of picked me off the boat and carried me for a second. But I think because I was exercising on the boat, I was doing things, I wasn't just sitting down below, and the boat is constantly moving quite quickly that I never got the vertigo type of feeling that you normally would get."

What was it like to see people, your family again? Did you laugh? Did you cry?

"I think I was the only person not crying on the dock. The entire crowd, my parents, my team, I got second place and even the first-place competitor when he handed me my trophy was even crying. I think I was the only one not crying. And I don't know if maybe it just hasn't hit me yet."

How did your boat hold up?

"My boat held up pretty well. I was a little disappointed in how she held up, but when I look at the other competitors and what it actually takes to go around the world, she did great. And I think maybe I'm just a perfectionist in that kind of way. I don't want things to break. I felt like we were going through things too quickly. The last couple of days my team and I have been dedicated to looking at what is broken and taking the whole boat apart."

What did break?

"Oh god, do you want the list? I think the majority was actually electrical. Saltwater is just horrible for electronics, and your electronics are waterproof with freshwater, not saltwater. The salt is just really good at corroding and killing everything."

Tell us about the route and what the hardest spot was for you?

"You leave from Acuña, Spain, and you travel south and then you navigate through the Canary Islands and Cape Verde, which is off of Africa. And then you go across the equator, there's a couple of islands off of Brazil. You go through those and then you take a left turn to go and start your Cape [of Good Hope] journey. To be honest, that whole area inside the Southern Ocean—you have the South Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, and each individual one is so different because of the currents, because of the wind, the waves, and how close each of these oceans is to the land. And so each have their own struggles. I think no sailor out there will disagree that the Southern Oceans are by far the most challenging."

You must have learned a lot about the weather, weather patterns, wind patterns.

"100%. I had a very good team behind me. My weather router, Chelsea, sent a 10-year historical analysis about the Southern Oceans to me about three weeks before the start of the race, so I read her entire booklet. She sends me where she thinks that the breeze is going to be coming from, and then I have to decide on what sails to use, and how big the sails should be that I'm going to use, and where I'm going to go. We talked every single day. My team was like, 'Okay, we trust that your eyes are seeing this firsthand and you're going to make the right decisions for how big the seas are and how windy it is.'"

How did you stay on course?

"I, of course, have like an autopilot system that’s driving at all times, because the autopilot can drive perfectly 100% of the time, where I can drive perfectly for maybe 10 minutes. On the ocean, autopilots are 100% necessary and almost every boat has them. It's just not really possible to drive all night long and there's no place to just pull over and park. A lot of the technology is programmable, so you have a PC and you're constantly programming it for the specific conditions. And I'm not a video game geek, so I struggle with that, but everything has a manual. If you can read a manual, you can sail."

You’re on Instagram, and I read that you began with the goal of having maybe 10,000 people following you around the world. I think you're at about  500,000 followers now on Instagram. You were posting a lot during this trip. I understand some of your sponsors weren’t necessarily happy about that. Why did you decide to do it?

"I had it in my mind that if you wanted to make this important, people had to see it. You know, there's one thing to go around the world and there's another thing to actually show the world what you're doing, and show the sport that is so obscure and that people don't really know about. Exposing myself on to social media didn't seem like that crazy to me and to an older generation it did."

Are you hoping to inspire young people to try things, to sail, to do something adventurous?

"Yeah, of course. I have a protegé. I started working with her when she was 15, and I think she's now 17 going to be 18. She flew all the way from Connecticut to Spain just to see my finish. I look at her and, you know, her friends, and anyone else that I've spoken to about this and I’m at the forefront of this campaign, but it's the people behind me that have been lifting me up the entire time. My advice to anyone is keep those friends that really respect you and understand your dreams and want to be a part of it. Find the people that are willing to participate in your dreams and don't laugh at you or think that you're crazy, because when you actually get the opportunity, you want to have some people in your corner."

130 Days at Sea: American Woman Is First to Race Solo Around the World in Non-Stop Sailboat Journey

A sailor from New York is making waves as the first American woman to complete a nonstop solo journey in a race around the world.

The 5-foot-2 record-setter placed second in the Global Solo Challenge after a treacherous 130-day trip, Knewz.com has learned, marking a milestone that coincides with Women's History Month.

Cole Brauer, 29, arrived in A Coruña, Spain , on Thursday, March 7, after sailing past the three great capes: Africa's Cape of Good Hope, Australia's Cape Leeuwin, and South America's Cape Horn.

Brauer traveled 27,711 nautical miles on board First Light , a 40-foot monohull sailboat, and documented her voyage on Instagram .

She shared the ups and downs of the endeavor, including onboard workouts as well as a rib injury in December; Brauer was thrown across her boat due to "broaching," when the vessel inadvertently changes direction, in rough seas near Africa.

She was even prepared for holidays spent alone at sea, with pumpkin decorations for Halloween, a small Christmas tree, and a bottle of bubbly for New Year's.

Toward the end of her circumnavigation, Brauer said her boat was "deteriorating." During the final week, she shared that "horrendous conditions" were causing serious problems on board.

"On top of all the slamming, there is a lot of water inside the boat, I have now started to use the electric pump to pump out water every 6-10 hours," she wrote on Instagram. She described making "raincoats" out of Ziploc bags to protect the autopilot and rudder bearing, "but it's not enough."

"I at least know the issues and what are the worse case scenarios and I am monitoring this and making sure that I keep these areas as dry as I can," Brauer wrote.

But it all worked out in the end, as the New Yorker informed organizers of the Global Solo Challenge that she was deliberately slowing down ahead of her arrival , to pull in to the finish line at first light — on First Light.

“Amazing finish!!!! So stoked! Thank you to everyone that came together and made this process possible,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of her waving to flares to mark the end of her journey.

Brauer clinched her second-place victory donning a beanie that appropriately read "Wild Feminist."

“I think that it takes a lot of strength to actually push and to strive into this industry , and I really want women to understand that it’s possible.” Brauer told NBC News in an interview shortly after her return.

"She dreamt of the world, not just the waves," the company North Sails wrote in an Instagram post . "As the first American woman to single-handedly race the world nonstop, she shattered stereotypes and defied the elements, etching her name in history."

French sailor Philippe Delamare won the Global Solo Challenge on Saturday, February 24. He started the race about a month before Brauer, and completed his circumnavigation in 147 days and one hour.

March Madness predictions 5.0: Projecting NCAA Tournament bracket for Big 12 basketball teams

american 12 sailboat

The number of days remaining until the 2024 NCAA Tournament bracket is revealed can now be counted on a single hand.

March Madness is officially upon us.

Across the country, conference tournaments have either already begun, are set to start in the coming days or, in a select few cases, have already wrapped up.

With the Big 12 Tournament set to tip off in Kansas City on Tuesday, the league remains the class of college basketball. The conference, rated as the best in the sport by a sizable margin by KenPom, has a Division I-best nine teams in the projected tournament field, led by No. 1 overall seed Houston . The nine teams in the tournament represent just under two-thirds of the league's 14-team membership.

  • Purdue (28-3, 17-3 Big Ten) : NET No. 2 | KenPom No. 3
  • North Carolina (25-6, 17-3 ACC) : NET No. 7 | KenPom No. 8

At this point, what else is there to say about the Cougars? Despite making the sizable leap in competition from the American Athletic Conference to the Big 12, coach Kelvin Sampson's team was as strong as ever, winning its new league by a full two games. It capped off a stellar regular season by pasting Kansas 76-46 last Saturday. At this point, it's not whether Houston can hold on to a No. 1 seed, but whether it can remain the top overall seed.

No. 2 seeds

  • Tennessee (24-7, 14-4 SEC) : NET No. 5 | KenPom No. 5

  • Marquette (23-8, 14-6 Big East) : NET No. 14 | KenPom No. 13

While a road loss against Kansas State last Saturday was a bit of a downer, the Cyclones still put together one of their best regular seasons in recent memory. The 24 wins are their most in seven years. Ranked No. 2 in Division I in adjusted defensive efficiency, according to KenPom, Iowa State is well-positioned to try to make its first Final Four appearance since 1944.

No. 3 seeds

  • Duke (24-7, 15-5 ACC) : NET No. 10 | KenPom No. 7

  • Baylor (22-9, 11-7 Big 12) : NET No. 14 | KenPom No. 14

At 22-9, the Bears have secured their fifth consecutive season with more than 20 wins, something the program had done only three times ever prior to coach Scott Drew's hiring in 2003. Baylor has nine wins in Quad 1 games, the fourth-most of any Division I team, and has yet to lose in a Quad 3 or Quad 4 contest.

  • Auburn (24-7, 13-5 SEC) : NET No. 6 | KenPom No. 4
  • Alabama (21-10, 13-5 SEC) : NET No. 8 | KenPom No. 11

What began as a season of immense promise for the Jayhawks, with a preseason No. 1 ranking in the Coaches Poll, will end as a disappointment unless they pull off a deep run in the NCAA Tournament (which, with coach Bill Self at the helm, is certainly possible). Since starting 13-1, Kansas has gone just 9-8 since Jan. 10 and has its most losses in a season in conference play since 1988-89.

  • Texas Tech (22-9, 11-7 Big 12) : NET No. 30 | KenPom No. 25

The Cougars held serve last week, falling at Iowa State, which finished off an 18-0 run at Hilton Coliseum in the process, before running away from Oklahoma State last Saturday in their regular-season finale. With its 1-1 record last week, BYU finished the regular season fifth in a conference in which it was 13th of 14 teams in the league's preseason poll.

The Red Raiders, meanwhile, enjoy a sizable jump after piecing together an emphatic end to the regular season, their first under coach Grant McCasland. After blowing by Oklahoma State by 17, Texas Tech finished off its regular season with a 78-68 home victory against Baylor. With the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments still to go, the Red Raiders have the eighth-most wins in a season in program history.

In what had been a disappointing season, the Longhorns finished strong, winning three of their final four games heading into the Big 12 Tournament. That late-season spurt was capped off by a 14-point win last Saturday against rival Oklahoma. Between Max Abmas, Dylan Disu and Tyrese Hunter, Texas has plenty of offensive firepower that could make it a dangerous team both in Kansas City and the NCAA Tournament.

The Sooners' final season in the Big 12 didn't end on a high note. African American English, Black ASL are stigmatized. Experts say they deserve recognition

american 12 sailboat

For as long as she can remember, Sonja Lanehart has been fascinated by how people speak. In particular, she was interested in the differences she noticed between how white people spoke, when compared to the Black people she grew up around.

As a result, Lanehart said she, like others, began to believe the way Black people spoke was wrong and this language barrier was preventing them from accessing certain resources.

“When I went to college, I originally started off as a speech pathologist because I wanted to fix how Black people spoke,” said Lanehart, a linguistics professor at the University of Arizona. “And as I took more courses and learned more about language, I understood that Black people weren't broken, that Black people spoke differently, just like everybody else did.”

In part due to the legacy of slavery and segregation in the United States, African Americans have developed their own distinct varieties of language, including African American English and Black American Sign Language. While some parts of Black language have been appropriated and exploited , Black people still face discrimination based on how they communicate, and researchers and native speakers across the country are working to reduce this stigma by studying, highlighting and preserving these languages.

“What we need is for people to register both formal versus informal and to recognize that there's appropriate times and places for different language varieties, but that the way that entire communities speak are not wrong,” said Taylor Jones , a linguist who has researched African American English. “Individuals may have a language impediment, communities do not.”

Slang comes from the Black community: Not acknowledging that perpetuates racism.

How slavery and segregation led to the creation of Black languages

African American English is an umbrella term for the many different and distinctive varieties of English used predominantly by Black Americans , including vernaculars, or the more everyday, informal version of a language, Lanehart said. Although there are different regional varieties spoken by Black people across the country, African American English is "equally stigmatized regardless of what part of the country you're in," she said.

Lanehart and others experts who spoke to USA TODAY described AAE a variety of English, shying away from calling it a "dialect."

Tracey Weldon, who worked as a linguist in higher education for nearly 30 years, said African American Vernacular English shares certain features like multiple negation ("she ain’t got no money") or nasal fronting (walking vs. walkin’) with other varieties like Southern White Vernacular English. Other features, like the habitual be ("I hate going to that café because their coffee be cold"), share similarities with Caribbean English creoles and West African languages, Weldon said.

Many words, including The Oxford University Press' 2023 Word of the Year   "rizz," come from African American English, she said. But African American English also includes more formal or standard varieties that don’t include any of these features, Weldon said, noting that “standard English is not just white English.”

“It’s also important to recognize that there are more standard ways of speaking by which speakers can also sound Black and a lot of that has to do with pitch, tone, intonation, and word choice,” she said.

There are two competing theories about how African American English developed, according to Weldon. She said some linguists believe it emerged as a dialect of American English, while others say it developed as a creole, a language that emerges when speakers who don't share a common language come into contact with one another, to facilitate the African slave trade and then became the primary form of communication among enslaved Africans who were brought to the United States.

The language was preserved in large part due to the isolation of African Americans, first on slave plantations and then during segregation, Weldon said.

But it wasn’t until nearly 200 years after the advent of slavery that sign language would begin to expand in America, beginning with the creation of a school in Connecticut in 1817, now known as the American School for the Deaf, according to Joseph Hill, an associate professor at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf. Schools for the deaf spread throughout the 19th century, but many in the South were segregated, causing sign language to develop differently in Black and white communities, Hill said through an interpreter.

It wasn’t until schools began to integrate that Carolyn McCaskill learned she signed so differently she couldn’t understand her white classmates and teachers. McCaskill was one of the first students to integrate the Alabama School for the Deaf in 1968.

“I decided that I had to then learn how to code-switch,” she said through an interpreter. “At the time, I didn't have that terminology, that language, but that's what I was doing. You know, we do things just to survive in particular environments.”

Black deaf people typically use two hands for signs that white deaf people may only use one for, Hill said. And while in ASL, signing is usually done between the shoulders, forehead and waist, signers using Black ASL often use more space by signing higher or lower, Hill said.

McCaskill, founding director of the Center for Black Deaf Studies at Gallaudet University , said a majority of young Black signers also incorporate African American English into their vocabulary, citing signs for tripping and whack as examples.

“Language isn't static,” she said. “We see language evolve in our community and I think it's actually a beautiful thing. It's absolutely beautiful.”

Black languages can draw 'insidious' discrimination

Simply sounding identifiably Black can make someone vulnerable to discrimination in various contexts including housing, employment, education and the criminal justice system, according to Nicole Holliday , a linguistics professor at Pomona College.

“This is really insidious in a way that makes my skin crawl because there's cover for discrimination based on language in a way that there isn't [for other forms of discrimination,]” she said.

Holliday found discrimination and misunderstandings can happen even if a Black person isn’t using the features of African American English that people may perceive as bad grammar. In the case of Sandra Bland , an African-American woman found dead in a Texas jail cell in 2015, Holliday hypothesized the officer who stopped Bland perceived her as aggressive because she sounded Black.

"So if she'd been interacting with another person who spoke African American English, they may not have perceived her tone as adversarial," she said. "But because he was unfamiliar with the sort of norms of Black speech and tone, he perceived it as aggressive and that's a small part of what led to the escalation in that situation."

Study: Police officers speak to Black drivers less respectfully. Here's why it matters

Though Holliday said the differences between African American English and other varieties of English aren't as large as the differences between languages like English and Spanish, miscommunication can still occur. A 2019 study of court reporters in Philadelphia found participants incorrectly transcribed 40% of the African American English sentences and were able to accurately paraphrase the meaning of those sentences just 33% of the time.

Despite the stigma, African American English hasn't died out not only because completely changing the way someone speaks is hard, but also because language is an important part of who someone is, Holliday said.

“If you can only speak African American English, especially if you’re a kid, then that hinders your educational opportunities,” she said. “But if you can only speak ‘standard’ English, then you're very uncool because what is valued in the community is actually about linguistic dexterity.”

Hill said Black deaf people can face some of the same stigma and pressure to code-switch as hearing people, particularly in the workplace. He said he’s heard many stories of Black deaf people and children of deaf adults working as translators and interpreters who have had their work criticized by white deaf people as too expressive or exaggerated even though it was linguistically accurate.

“They might misinterpret something to mean something else,” Hill said. “Because of the facial expressions in Black ASL, white deaf signers might think we're signing aggressively or that we're angry, but really those facial features are linguistic features in Black ASL to enhance meaning.”

And inadequate access to technology and the lack of Black interpreters can make it more difficult for Black deaf people to effectively communicate with hearing people, according to Sheryl Emery, president of National Black Deaf Advocates.

“The chances of me getting an interpreter who looks like that I do is very, very rare,” Emery said through an interpreter.

Emery said Black deaf people can be marginalized because of both their race and their deafness, and "even though things have gotten better, we still need to make more of an effort with more discussion about the Black community being more accepting, interacting [with] and recognizing the people with disabilities within our Black community.”

What is code-switching? Why Black Americans say they can't be themselves at work

Dictionary, TikTok generate awareness and 'prestige'

Hill said he worries about the preservation of Black ASL as the schools where it was born close and members of the already-small research community like McCaskill retire. But, he said it is encouraging to see young people raising awareness about Black ASL on social media platforms, like Nakia Smith , a 22-year-old from Texas who describes herself as an “influencer activist.”

Some of Smith's TikTok videos, which often feature lessons on Black ASL or stories from family members including her grandfather who she said grew up during the Jim Crow era, have attracted more than a million views. She said it’s important for more people to know that while Black ASL is not the same for everyone, it is unique and reflects Black culture.

McCaskill said she hopes to see more research done on how Black ASL is being used today as well as a dictionary and classes potentially created around the language.

“I feel that we only scratched the surface, really,” she said. “And so I certainly believe that more research needs to be conducted, needs to be shared and disseminated with a wider audience.”

Meanwhile, linguists including Weldon and Lanehart are currently working to bring an African American English dictionary to life. They said The Oxford Dictionary of African American English will trace the historical roots of words created in the African American community.

Lanehart said the team, which includes researchers and editors at Oxford University Press and Harvard University’s Hutchins Center for African & African American Research, found it easy to agree on including some words, like ashy and kitchen. But others have sparked lively discussions about their proper spelling and pronunciation like "shorty," which is pronounced more like "shawty" by people in the South. She called the undertaking a “hugely significant project.”

“I wouldn't say that it legitimates African American language because African American language is already legitimated just like every other language variety,” Lanehart said. “But it does bring a level of prestige to it to counteract those arguments that say that it's not worthy."

American singer and Raspberries frontman Eric Carmen dies aged 74

Eric Cramen

American singer and Raspberries frontman Eric Carmen, who was best known for hits such as All By Myself and Hungry Eyes, has died aged 74.

In a statement on his website his wife Amy said he passed away in his sleep on the weekend.

"It is with tremendous sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Eric Carmen," she said.

"It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy."

She asked for the public to respect the family's privacy as they mourn the "enormous loss".

The statement ended with lyrics from a song from his 1977 album Boats Against The Current: "Love Is All That Matters…Faithful and Forever".

He was a founding member of The Raspberries which formed in 1970 and went on to release hit songs Go All the Way and I Wanna Be With You.

Carmen started his solo career when the band broke up in 1975.

He went on to release All By Myself which sold over 1 million copies and Never Gonna Fall In Love Again which peaked at 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1984 he co-wrote Almost Paradise for the film Footloose alongside Dean Pitchford.

Three years later his performance of Hungry Eyes, written by John DeNicola and Franke Previte, featured in Dirty Dancing.

In 2000, he toured with Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band.

He released his first new recording in more than 15 years in 2013, a track called Brand New Year.
