2024 Boat of the Year: HH44

On a cool late-October morning in Annapolis, Maryland, Sailing World ’s Boat of the Year judges stepped on board the gleaming red HH44 built by the Hudson Yacht Group in China. With them for the test sail was HH Catamarans president Seth Hynes and commissioning skipper Chris Bailet, who had tuned the rig and bent on the boat’s Dacron delivery sails. (The race sails were delayed in shipping.) It was their first time sailing the boat too, and like the judges, they were eager to see what it could do.

As the crew slipped dock lines and motored away in silence, the boat’s twin 10-kilowatt electric engines propelled the sleek catamaran through the mooring field in silence. If not for the sound of water gurgling from the transoms and the apparent wind blowing across the foredeck, the judges could barely tell they were underway.

The mainsail was then carefully hoisted inside the lazy jacks, and the halyard held firm with an innovative Karver KJ cone (a conical rope-holding device that acts like a restricter). They bore away and unfurled the non-overlapping jib, which snapped full, and the boat immediately accelerated. 

“Once we got going, it was 5, 6, 7 knots and then—boom—we’re right up to 10,” Stewart says. And with that they were laying tracks all over the Chesapeake Bay, making good pace on all points of sail, even without a reaching sail to deploy. (That too was stuck in transit.)

After two hours of straight-­lining, tacking, jibing, and enjoying the comforts of the interior in a 10- to 15-knot southerly and sharp Chesapeake chop, I extracted the judges from the boat and asked, “So?”

“Boat of the Year,” was veteran Boat of the Year judge Chuck Allen’s immediate response. “That thing is wicked.”

Greg Stewart and Mike Ingham confirmed with nods of approval and big grins. There was no need to debate any further: The HH44 had earned the first award of what will be more to come. This $2 million crossover catamaran is the performance sailor’s retirement race boat. [Editor’s note: The judges’ estimated price was based on an expected racing inventory and associated hardware, but according to HH Catamarans, the new 2024 pricing is as follows: The HH44-OC will start at $995K and is approximately $1.3m fully optioned with EcoDrive and sails). The HH44-SC will start at $1.45m and be approximately $1.6 million fully optioned with EcoDrive and sails.]

With a stated 37 of these 44-footers on order as of late October and a waiting list of three-plus years, HH44s will someday be scattered about in cruising grounds around the world, says Hynes. But it’s only a matter of time—and it will be sooner than later—before owners gather and give the racing thing a go.

The HH44 is the smallest of the builder’s new lineage of hybrid-powered performance catamarans (there is a 52-footer in the works), so it is positioned as an entry point into big-cat sailing. This model does not require a professional captain or crew because simplicity and owner-operator considerations are prevalent throughout the boat, which is designed by young naval architect James Hakes, son of Paul Hakes, one of the company founders. Chinese entrepreneur Hudson Wang is the other “H” of HH Catamarans.

“It had a great groove upwind. The self-tacking jib was really easy to deal with, and for the mainsail it was just a few feet of ease on the mainsheet, adjust the powered traveler up to center, trim on and go.”

“James brought the hybrid idea with him, and Hudson was willing to take a risk and look at doing something kind of game-changing in the industry with our parallel-­hybrid approach,” Hynes says. Morrelli & Melvin was intimately involved in every performance aspect of the boat, from the appendages to the final hull profile.

“It’s a diesel engine with a shaft drive, and then independent of that is an electric motor with a belt to the shaft, so they’re really independent of each other,” Hynes explains.

HH isn’t the first or only builder to use the system from Hybrid Marine, but Hake’s approach to the boat overall is inextricably linked to maximizing solar coverage, which means a clean roof and placing the helm stations down in the cockpit. To address the known challenges of cockpit steering in such catamarans, the steering wheels pivot inboard and outboard to allow for better forward visibility and communication with anyone on the foredeck dealing with sails, anchors or dock lines.

Placing the steering stations in the cockpit eliminates the tiered wedding-cake look of most big catamarans these days. More importantly, doing so allows them to lower the sail plan. “That allows for more sail area and less stress on the standing rigging,” Stewart says. “Plus, it looks so much better.”

There are 4,432 watts worth of solar panels piled onto the coach roof, which Hynes says has plenty of juice to get by off the grid, even in low-light conditions. “At full battery capacity, you can run the boat at full throttle using the two 10-kilowatt electric motors and get 7 knots of boatspeed for approximately two hours,” he says. “In light air, you can even keep your leeward electric motor running to build yourself some apparent wind. That’s what’s great about this system: You can sail quietly when no one else can sail at all.”

The port helm station is where a lot of the boathandling happens; there are powered halyard winches and a meticulous array of labeled jammers. Tails disappear into a deep trough forward of the pedestal. The wheels are sized just right, Stewart says. “Initially, I was steering from the weather wheel and I could see fine, and when I went to the leeward wheel, I could easily see the telltales. It had a great feel to the helm—light and responsive with no slop or tightness.”

In Allen’s sailing assessment of the HH44: “It had a great groove upwind. The self-tacking jib was really easy to deal with, and for the mainsail it was just a few feet of ease on the mainsheet, adjust the powered traveler up to center, trim on and go. There is some choreography to learn with the steering wheel, though. You have to move the wheel inboard to get better access to the sail and daggerboard controls during the tack. But once you’re done, you pop the wheel right back out to the outboard position. We didn’t have a screecher to really light it up downwind, but even with the Dacron jib and main, the boat took off. I was really impressed.”

One wish for Stewart would be a sliver of a coach roof window for quick sail-trim checks, but he understood the priority of using every inch of solar-panel coverage.

Not having a sail-trim window wasn’t an issue for Ingham, however. “Most of the time, you’ll trim it to your best guess, take a step outboard and up the stairs right next to the wheel, and check yourself on the trim. It’s all push buttons anyway, so you’re not having to reload a winch or anything like that every time you make an adjustment.”

Even as the morning’s fresh breeze abated, the boat continued to perform beyond expectations, Stewart says. “As we got down to 5 knots of wind, the boat was still quick through the tacks. We didn’t have to back the jib at all, and it sailed at good angles upwind. I was impressed with how well it tacked, and how well it tracked with only one daggerboard down.”

Stewart, a naval architect himself, also appreciated the boat’s modern styling and “sexy-looking profile,” especially the uncluttered interior. “It’s a nice departure from other similar-­size catamarans,” he says. “I like the styling—it caught my eye the very first time I saw the rendering. The transom angle and the reverse bow give it nice aesthetics and the buoyancy you need. The curved boards worked well and are integrated nicely on with the boat. Overall, it’s a great-looking package, and it would be a lot of fun to do some races on.”

“We will definitely end up racing in the Caribbean and doing some fun events for owners,” Bailet says. “The cool thing about this boat is you can take a smaller crew of friends and race competitively, and it isn’t going to cost you $50,000 in paid crew and housing. You can race this boat with three or four people, no problem. Doublehandling is pretty easy too, but if you really wanted to go banging around the buoys, with this boat it would be easy.”

Multimillion-dollar sailing cats are a small but fiercely contested niche, mostly dominated by European brands. So it’s worth paying attention when an eight-year-old builder from China is considered a legitimate challenger to pedigreed French names such as Privilege and Lagoon .

HH Catamarans , with a line ranging from fast, wave-jumping 50-foot cruisers to 88-foot ocean yachts, has gained a loyal following in the US and Europe, in part because COO Paul Hakes—he’s one of the H’s in “HH”—is obsessed with mating upscale interiors to featherweight racing hulls.

Hakes assembled what he calls a “mini-UN” of expat experts at HH’s production headquarters in Xiamen, China. Naval architecture is done by the California-based firm Morelli & Melvin . The yachts are built by local labor: With an average of 40,000 man-hours per cat, the labor savings add up significantly, allowing HH to focus on superior performance through exotic materials and expensive carbon-fiber weaves. “We’re determined to make HH the Ferrari of sailing cats,” Hakes says.

Product Overview

The old adage that the many benefits of a cruising catamaran are achieved at the cost of its sailing qualities is no longer true and a growing proportion of buyers are seeking performance boats that are responsive and fun to sail. This part of the multihull market has of course existed for a long time, with the likes of Outremer, Catana and more recently Gunboat and Marsaudon Composites proving that lightweight ultra-fast catamarans can be safe and comfortable, yet also exhilarating.

HH Catamarans has grown rapidly since the yard was founded in 2012 by entrepreneur and boating enthusiast Hudson Wang. He has since ploughed some US$50 million into the company, including 1.2 million square feet of manufacturing space with state of the art production equipment, predominately at Xiamen in south-western China.

Wang has also recruited top talent, including Kiwi boatbuilder Paul Hakes, who as CEO has brought his knowledge of building very high end raceboats to a cruising audience who want an equal level of attention to detail in an impeccably finished yacht that also offers a high level of comfort and without sacrificing speed.

The latest model to hit the water, the HH44, will be the smallest in the range and therefore available to a wider audience, even if the price tag still ranges upwards of US$1 million ex VAT. Nevertheless this hasn’t deterred 35 owners ordering boats off-plan before the first one left the yard.

This Morrelli & Melvin design is not as ultra high performance as some of the earlier and larger HH models. This is especially true in the OC (Ocean Cruising) versions of the HH44, which have an easily handled format with aluminium mast, white gelcoat finish and mini-keels as standard instead of daggerboards. Nevertheless displacement is one third lower than that of many catamarans of this size, which promises enjoyable and rewarding sailing, as well as markedly reducing time spent under power when passagemaking.

SC (Sports Cruising) models include current race boat technology, including carbon C-foils and rig, a painted hull finish, plus over 4kW of solar panels.

They also have a parallel hybrid EcoDrive system developed by Isle of Wight company Hybrid Marine. This is intended to provide all the key benefits of an electric boat – including silent, fume-free motoring, instant torque when manoeuvring, and hydro-regeneration while sailing – without sacrificing the reassuring backup of diesel engines.

The first boat, an SC model painted in a striking metallic silver, was scheduled to hit the water this summer. Demand has been such that HH is currently building an additional set of moulds and two production lines will run for the HH44 at its Cebu facility in the Philippines.

HH Catamarans

HH Catamarans is on a mission to redefine the concept of a luxury performance multihull – from 44ft all the way up to superyacht size.

With the HH44, HH Catamarans launched a unique and very clever concept of sailing multihull into the market. Not reinventing, but defining a new type of luxury performance cat that has not, at least at 44ft, been available in this format.

Before, there was basically a choice between luxury catamarans on one side and performance catamarans on the other and until the HH44, there has been no production catamaran that brings together these two apparently contravening worlds in such a convincing blend.

The 44 is only the beginning in a whole new generation of luxury performance cats by HH, where the ideas and innovations introduced in the 44 are being upscaled into a new HH52, and HH60. This also includes the HH80, which will be a true superyacht. It will require different parameters entirely and will, no doubt, also benefit from the creative, forward thinking design process and the vast experience of the HH company and its CEO, Paul Hakes, in advanced composite construction.

Let’s go back to the HH44 for a minute as this is the boat that initiated this new generation. As a luxurious and potentially very performative cat below 50ft, showing off a dashing profile to match, it is truly unique. And very successful, too as Ben Galloway, commissioning skipper of the very first HH44 sailing says, when he confirms that already 37 of these boats have been ordered.

And all this with a seven-digit price tag that obviously does not deter discerning customers from going for this boat that has already been, as Paul Hakes likes to put it, “disruptive” to the market.

But how does he actually define the terms “luxury” and “performance” and how has his team been able to blend the two?

‘Luxury has more to do with carefully designed and executed detailing’, he explains: ‘Luxury can be aircon which is able to run in silent mode off batteries for days on end. And proper sized beds with quality sprung mattresses. And specially made cushions for the salon, comfy to sit in. This is luxury.

‘Also, the headroom inside, between 6’8” to 6’10” (over 2m), which makes the difference between living properly on the boat, or just camping. Or take storage space. We have here the option of turning the forward cabin into a dedicated workshop or pantry with extra refrigeration. Lighting is very important, we have indirect lighting wherever possible to create a beautiful ambiance. Also, real night lighting to keep night vision when under way.’

He could carry on like this for a while, but we get the idea.

HH Catamarans

Performance, on the other hand, is seen by him as more than “just” sailing fast. ‘We have carefully designed canoehulls which offer a high payload without incurring many of the usual penalties in performance’, Hakes explains. ‘But performance also shows when we can sail in light air, while others are motoring. It all comes down to hull design, and keeping the weight out of the boat. The lighter we make it in the first place, the more payload it will be able to have. But it must also be robust and stiff. This goes a long way to delivering performance.

‘Polyester boats are just too soft and flexible for top performance. All our catamarans are made in vacuum-infused foam sandwich composite using only epoxy resin, which is far superior to any polyester resin. Reinforcements like the bulkheads, beams, frames and longitudinal stringers are all constructed with massive use of carbon-fibres, again epoxy-infused. The hull sides are E-glass infused, with carbon in high-load spots like chainplates and daggerboard cases.’

Defining the size of the 44 was a matter of logic. ‘We wanted to go well below 50ft to create a boat that is easy to sail for a crew of family or friends, or even a couple. On the other hand, it still had to be a true world-cruiser which meant certain requirements in payload, stowage, and so on’, explains James Hakes, principal designer at HH. ‘And always keeping performance foremost in mind.’

One item that defines the boat are the helm stations, which are located at the aft end of the hulls. This enabled the very sleek and sexy profile of the boat, and a large free area on the coachroof that is entirely covered in solar and also has the traveller running across it, safely out of the cockpit below.

The huge array of solar (left) amounts to 4.2 kW, and is one key aspect in the overall concept. The other is again performance related: by lowering the boom, the mainsail area could be increased, while the centre of effort at the same time moves downwards. This enables the crew to put more power into the main, without excessive heeling forces.

Ben Galloway has previously worked on large performance cats and is very impressed with the performance of the HH44: ‘I have been with the boat since launching and did a huge amount of sailing. We got the hull flying a couple of times, in test sailing we really pushed it hard to test the structure, all good, then I cruised with the owner and his wife down to Mallorca before coming to Barcelona. Remember, this is a 44ft boat, not big, so I am happy doing 8-10kts when cruising. But we have also hit 15-point-something, with the kite up. That’s very quick but it still felt nicely under control. Helming is very responsive and smooth and the boat really is silent when sailing.’

All lines are led aft below the clean decks, to winches at the helm stations just in front of the Jefa wheels. These can be canted and locked in three different positions: move the wheel outwards and you have a clear view along the side decks and into the sails; move it right inside and you are underneath the cockpit roof and sheltered from sun or rain. This is also a very sociable place for the helmsperson, and it feels safe.

This is yet another unusual idea in catamarans: The HH44 has closed transoms, with fold-down bathing and boarding platforms usually found in monohulls. Thus, the usable deck space is carried right aft to the end of the boat, unlike with the more usual open transom steps, which can’t be used when under way. The overall length of the 44 is actually increased to 48ft when the transoms are down – effectively fitting a 48ft package into 44ft overall length.

As is natural for a true performance sailboat, the HH44 has a large sail wardrobe that allows several variations. The boat carries both a reacher and a gennaker, the latter on a on top-down furler. Then a good-sized Solent jib, plus a smaller, self-tacking staysail for heavy weather work, all on furlers. Reefing the mainsail is done from the helm winches, with a clever system of reef hooks that will take up the strain of the reefing lines when reefed.

The HH44 Sports Cruising version has curved daggerboards that provide lift which in turn generate a righting moment. However, the loads on these boards are enormous so they are made entirely from unidirectional carbon pre-preg, with each board then being tested to twice the calculated load before being fitted to the boat. The rudders are built in a similar fashion, with rudder stocks not made from aluminum or steel, but of solid carbon fibre: ‘This is dead solid, no voids, and will last as long as the boat’, says Paul Hakes. The rudder shapes and profiles again provide lift.

Winches are e-powered. Indeed, this boat has been designed from the start as being “electrified”. For the big draw items such as winches, traveller, and engines, it has a 48V battery bank, probably the first production boat to feature this. When not sailing, the boat is driven by an electric/ diesel hybrid system. This combines silent, emission-free propulsion with two conventional diesel engines for backup. The electricity is generated by solar, but also with hydro re-generation when sailing which works perfectly at the high speeds at which this boat will usually sail.

‘You can switch between electric and diesel’, explains Galloway, ‘to get a bit more power from the diesel, but for going in and out of harbours, electric is fine. With all the solar and re-gen I only very seldom start the diesels. It all charges the 48V battery bank and that will then fill the 12V battery bank. Twelve V is always going to be at 100 percent but 48V will go up and down, you just have to keep on top of that. We have already been away for two weeks without once plugging into shore power or starting the diesels.’

With a beautifully crafted, comfy and practical interior, the HH44 undoubtedly offers a unique package especially in her size range. Creating the true luxury performance cat in this size, down-sizing from the previous and larger HH models, must have been a real challenge. Mastering this was not a question of “inventing” just one new boat, but rather the end result of many very carefully considered, smart design choices which, when they finally all come together, form the overall result.

The next developments at HH will now move into the other direction: upscaling the key features of the 44 to new, larger models. Next in line is the new HH52 that will, for example, feature the same aft helm stations, uncluttered decks and low coachroof profile for improved sailing performance that is so significant to the HH44. However, increased size opens up potential for new ideas; the HH52 will also have the option for a forward cockpit and tiller steering aft.

While the new HH44 will certainly pave the way for HH Catamarans in creating a whole new breed of luxury performance catamarans, we can also very much look forward to the larger models in this conceptual thinking that will for sure again surprise with fresh and innovative design solutions.

In the past ten years, weight-saving benefits have been embedded in the Doyle manufacturing process; attention has focused more on performance and how the sails work. Doyle Sails Design Director Richard Bouzaid comments, “A great deal of what we do now is about how we can manipulate our membranes to do more. It is not just about sails retaining rigid shapes. Our structures are designed to be manipulated, hence the evolution of Structured Luff and Cableless sails.

“This ability to manipulate the shapes means you no longer need five codes of each sail locked into a narrow working range. Our inventories provide flexibility and overall, fewer sails required.”

Advances in sail technology also feedback into broader areas of performance and design. On their own, lighter, stronger sails reduce weight aloft, which improves performance, but Structured Luff and Cableless sails also reduce loads, placing less demand on rigs and supporting structures.

“We can take the load away from the mast and stays and carry more load in the sails,” says Bouzaid. “Big gains are being made there.” This has obvious benefits in racing applications and creates a virtuous cycle in Multihulls, where reduced loads and weight can lead to smaller engines, reduced fuel consumption and better sailing performance.

For the performance multihull customer, performance is manifested in several ways, but primarily durability, ease of use and speed – after all, sailors are there to enjoy the journey. Time is spent designing sails that ensure ease of use and longevity – with Doyle Sails designers listening to individual requirements.

Doyle Sails are the experts in designing complete inventories. Often for Cruising sailors, performance can also mean utilising a limited number of sails across a wide range of wind angles and strengths. Often sailing short-handed or with friends and family, sails must be designed for that specific purpose. Downwind sails tend to spend a lot of time in the air aboard cruising yachts – primarily because sailors who are there to enjoy the journey spend a large portion of their time either reaching or running for comfort, if possible. HH Catamarans Announces New 48

HH Catamarans announced the newest addition in their new line of luxury, performance, carbon fiber cruising cats Monday. Renowned naval architects Morrelli and Melvin will lead the design team, and the yacht will be built by Hudson Yacht Group at their state-of-the-art production facility in Xiamen.

The HH48 will fill a void in the semi-custom high performance catamaran market – a robustly built, blue water capable, fast cruiser with intelligent yet simple systems ideally suited for the owner-operator. The 48 will adhere to HH Catamarans’ core philosophies: advanced design, lightweight construction and luxurious finish, but will aim to reach a slightly different audience. For the sailor who’s serious about safety, speed, comfort, technology and style, the HH48 will offer the best of all worlds in a compact, easy-to-manage package.

“I’m excited,” HH President Paul Hakes said, “we’ve been working through the conceptual stages of design for quite some time now. We feel the HH48 will appeal to discerning sailors that have been wanting an easier-to-manage blue water catamaran with the quality of design and construction that make a great enduring yacht. Although smaller than the HH55, the living space inside is still plentiful. This remains a big volume boat with excellent payload capacity, meaning that even when fully loaded for world touring this boat will still perform to expectations. We have at least five prospects who have expressed serious interest in a slightly smaller, simpler version of our HH cats that can be run without crew. The HH48 will retain the best features and benefits of our existing models but will widen our market base by offering a top quality product that’s currently not available elsewhere.”

Deck layout and sailing systems have been designed with the owner operator in mind. Dual helm stations aft provide excellent visibility and allow the helmsman total sail control from either side of the boat. Push button mainsheet and self-tacking jib are standard. For those who wish to optimize performance, a powerful 520sqft overlapping solent is optional. All line handling is done from the helm stations, opening up the rest of the boat for living space. Future development will provide a new deck and interior layout, allowing for the option of a forward helm station, a popular option which allows for total boat operation from the safety and comfort of the saloon. Like in the larger HH models, the HH48 will have curved “C” daggerboards with optional push-button controlled line drivers. Fully retracted boards will yield a draft of 2.25 ft (0.68m), allowing the boat to comfortably navigate shallow waters.

The HH48 features a spacious general arrangement. The large saloon offers a generous sized galley to starboard with an island just outboard of centerline. Seating for six around a large dining table and a dedicated navigation station are to port. When at anchor the forward sail handling area easily converts to an a comfortable forward facing seating area. An attractive ‘eyebrow’ around the cabin top adds to the aggressive styling but is very practical in creating much needed sun shade in the saloon as well as creating a safety hand hold when walking the side decks. The aft cockpit is perfect for entertaining: an L-shaped settee and table set the stage for dining alfresco, made complete by an integrated wetbar and barbecue.

Down below you’ll find a luxury queen cabin aft in each hull. On port side, the master, which offers an office/lounge space amidship with substantial storage space and a generous head and separate shower forward. The guest side is to starboard with separate head and shower amidship and a third cabin forward. Dual companionways allow easy access to the saloon from either starboard cabin.

According to HH in-house designer James Hakes, the team is confident the HH48 will establish a new benchmark for the owner operated performance cruising cat, “Our ultimate goal here is a quick, strong, user-friendly boat. With very modern lines the 48 is beautiful and makes a statement of quality and style. Practical and robust, it will be the perfect boat for a couple who want to sail around the world or a group of friends looking to island hop through the Caribbean or South Pacific. We haven’t forgotten the sailor looking to take home the regatta silverware; with Morrelli and Melvin’s renowned abilities to deliver vessels with enhanced performance, we’ve given the 48 a generous sail plan that is well balanced with advanced rudder and dagger foils, and lightweight carbon construction that will satisfy the racer too.”

Though not finalized, the design brief for the HH48 allows for significant cost reduction in comparison to the larger HH models. Alternatives to carbon rigging and construction materials will be offered, as well as incentives for buyers who stick to the standard specification and a la carte options. Standard options will include dual aft helm steering stations or a forward helm station, three or four cabin layout, and many other standard possibilities to complete the package.

The HH48 design will undergo a final round of review and market feedback before tooling commences in the spring. The first hull is expected to launch in the fall of 2018.

Designing the HH44 Interiors

Luxury Living Spaces

“The interior is where our clients live and as well as being inviting and comfortable they’ve got to be open and functional. I would like to think that after starting from the 66 seven years ago with all the models that we’ve done in between we’ve really cracked it with this one”.

“We’re quite fortunate in that all our boats are semi-customized. Despite us being an in-house design office, compared to a high volume production, we need to talk to the customer first to find out what they want, and design a functional space that suits them. That is how we developed the 44.”

“The 44 doesn’t have as much room for customization due to the price point so we had to design an interior that we could set in stone. The choices had to be limited on décor rather than arrangement and equipment.”

How it’s Arranged

“Let’s dive into the arrangement itself. On the port side as you enter the salon is the galley and it’s U-shaped. We’ve found this works really well on the 50. We’ve rotated it on the 44 but it is still fantastic on a fast moving boat that can move a bit and so you have room to brace yourself all around you.”

“It’s a very functional space for cooking. It’s important when you’re on passage, when even on a comfortable boat like this if you’ve got a meter or two meters of swell, the boat’s moving around.”

“Having a U-shaped galley is is a tremendous asset. We all love open spaces but on a boat, open spaces can be dangerous. There is a fine balance, a line that we had to walk when designing the interior. How much space do we offer? Lots of space looks great at a boat show but it’s not so good when you’re in the middle of the ocean when you’re trying to walk from one side to the other.”

“On the opposite side of the salon you have an L-shaped settee, two meters by two meters so you can lie down either side of it. The table even lowers into a pilot berth day bed”.

Work From Home

“One of my favorite areas in the salon is the nav station. You’ll notice it’s larger than on the HH50 in terms of surface area but we always seem to fill it up. I’m sure a lot of us experienced in 2020 a fair stretch of home working, and many wish they could have been working on a yacht somewhere at anchor.”

“A lot of our clients are buying boats for this very reason, so we paid a bit more attention to the nav station to make it functional not just as a navigation desk but also as an office desk, so you’ve got room for your laptop or a big screen, there’s storage and plenty of console space if you want to fit different electronics.”

Ventilation

Also in the salon, we should mention that the two forward windows swing open and that will create great ventilation. They swing forwards so when there’s light rain, you don’t have to close them. Also just behind the mast there are port lights that that actually open inwards.”

Keeping Cool

“One of the fantastic benefits of the hybrid is that in order to power it you need quite a large lithium battery bank to push the boat. In comparison to the power it takes to push the boat, air conditioners don’t use very much so, in a hypothetical scenario, if you weren’t using anything else but an air conditioner you could run it for a week non-stop.”

“Living on the boat every day you’re getting solar energy and if you are sailing the you’re charging. So you can run air conditioning all the time if you want and not have to worry about draining the batteries.”

Sleeping Well

“Another important aspect of the HH44 of course is luxury. We spend 30 percent of our lives sleeping, so we use proper sprung marine mattresses with plastic springs and memory foam on the top so you sleep well.”

“Even our cushions in the salon and cockpit we’ve developed over many generations to get the right combination of open cell high density and foam with a lighter density foam on top so that it feels nice to sit in for an extended period. This is what luxury is about: beautiful sculptured foam cushions!”

“An important one because the human race as a species has got taller quite dramatically over the last 40 years, and Americans are particularly tall. In the hulls you have between six foot eight and six foot six clearance.”

“Despite the good looks of the boat, with clever design we can provide great head room. In the salon it varies from six foor eight to six foot ten. That in itself creates the feeling of luxury.”

Room for your Kit

“Storage space I consider another luxurious thing and we’ve got really big lockers at the front where we can house scuba gear and a dive compressor thanks to the hybrid electric engines.”

“Instead of the engine room, we’ve got a an empty space (well it’s got some steering gear in there and some other functions) but it’s another good cockpit storage space with a big deep locker.”

“The lockers at the front of the boat have plenty of room for all your sails and toys and if it were just a couple aboard and storage was the primary consideration we do have the option for the forward starboard cabin: you can take out the double berth there and fit it out with a workshop space with additional refrigeration.”

“And you’ve still got the aft cabin on the starboard side for your guests to come aboard with a vip double queen bed. And you’ve got overflow into the salon should people need to sleep there. So whether that space is a pantry, a workshop with lots of storage and a big working bench surface is up to you.”

“Also adding to the luxury feel of the boat we’ve paid special attention to the lighting because that’s an important part of any environment: the feeling and being able to set the mood. A harsh spotlight makes the space feel smaller so we’ve used indirect lighting wherever possible with rope lights hidden in the furniture.”

“One of the features of this that I really like is that there are RGB lights so when you’re night sailing you can set all the rope lights in the boat to red to help with your night vision.”

HH Catamarans

For those seeking limitless adventure and unbridled speed, the new HH60, with its powerful rig plan, extra-large cockpit, king size beds, and deep daggerboards, is sure to ignite the imagination. The fully refined, performance optimized HH60 will provide the ultimate platform for whatever lies over the horizon.

The natural evolution of the HH55, the HH60 has been expanded to provide generous entertainment and living space.

It was created with the idea of adding more space to the aft cockpit and an extra cabin in the Owner’s Hull without giving up the “Owner” part (we call it a “3/4 sized owner’s hull” with an office or a crew quarters forward of the shower). Large king size beds can be found in the aft cabins and huge sliding glass doors stack to one side to provide a seamless transition from the large salon to the open air cockpit.

This boat is probably our largest Owner/Operator yacht before you jump into our crewed HH66, so if you are an experienced yachtsman/woman and want to sail it around the world yourself, this is the largest of our models we would recommend.

The HH60 was born from a desire to take the already-stellar performance up another notch. A taller mast, longer longeron and deeper daggerboards ensure that the HH60 will outperform everything in its class.

Every HH Catamaran is built using the very finest, strongest and lightest materials available. We are experts in Carbon Construction and infuse all of our hulls with Epoxy resin. Bulkheads are solid carbon fiber and long, reverse plumb bows stretch the water line for efficiency. A robust sail plan allows for light wind sailing, and C-Shaped pre-preg carbon fiber daggerboards allow for unparalleled up wind performance.

Performance is part of our DNA and this is a maxi-catamaran like no other.

The HH60-SC is a “no-compromise” performance maxi-catamaran with dual raised aft helms, king size beds, C-shaped carbon daggerboards, and stunning performance in a size that can still be owner operated by experienced sailors.

HH60-SCF (Forward Helm)

The HH60-SCF is the same boat as the SC, but features a forward cockpit and optional aft tiller chairs. This lowers the boom, reduces weight and increases sail area (and performance). It also makes room for an industry leading 5,774 watts of solar on the coachroof and davits.

Luxury and speed are elevated when you have the ability to expand. the hulls boast king size beds aft and the generously sized owner’s ensuite reserves space forward of the shower for a perfect crew quarters or office space. meanwhile, the elongated platform and taller rig boost performance to a level akin to our flagship hh66 (complete with optional tiller chairs, push button mainsheet/traveler controls and an emergency mainsheet dump system)., ecodrive, a parallel hybrid system.

The HH60 has been designed to work with a parallel diesel/electric hybrid, a large solar array on the cabin top and hydro-regeneration while sailing.

Our EcoDrive provides all the benefits of an electric boat: silent fume free motoring, instant torque for maneuvering, and hydro-regeneration while sailing; while also providing the reliability of trusty diesel engines as a back up.

For the technology shy, traditional standalone diesel engines with shaft drives are also offered.

Whether racing in the multihull circuit or simply cruising the world with wind speed performance, the HH60 will set a new standard in sailing performance and luxury.

The advantages of raised aft helms

Raised aft helms offer advantages and disadvantages, so choosing which model is right for you depends on how you plan to use the yacht.

The advantages of a raised aft helm are improved 360 degree visibility around the boat, a better view of the rig and sails, better visibility down the hulls for docking or tight maneuvers, more space inside your salon, a much higher ceiling height in the cockpit and two nice bench seats to enhance your cruising experience. Since there are two helm stations, the line handling can be spread out for more working room.

Customize the aft helms to make it yours

With in-house engineering and design departments, we can easily customize the helm stations. To date, we have built versions with two raised soft canvas helms, two raised hard-top helms and a single raised coach roof covering both helms with sliding doors. The height of these different options can be tailored specifically to your needs and wants.

HH60-SCF (Forward Helm) Version:

Far from ordinary, the HH60-SCF was created to emphasize the pure joy of sailing on a yacht capable of cruising around the world in style. Exceptional design, intuitive systems, envy inducing aesthetics, spacious and comfortable living spaces, and safe, responsive sailing characteristics set the HH60-SCF apart.

The advantages of a forward helm

A forward helm occupies some of the salon space, but creates a single, larger forward working station with all of the lines lead to a centralized area. This makes the boat much easier to single hand while also lowering the boom and center of effort, and increasing the mainsail area. This boosts the yachts performance and keeps weight low.

The other advantages of a forward helm are the large, forward facing opening doors and hatches that increase air flow through the salon and make access forward to the bow easier and safer underway.

Optional tiller chairs allow for rudder control aft and enhance the thrill of sailing typically only found on a monohull.

Improved cockpit visibility

A forward helm station and cockpit is a nice place to steer from as it keeps you connected with the crew during racing or long passages. You can hold watch from the safety and comfort of the salon and an optional Webasto sunroof improves visibility of the sails above you.

Another optional feature we recommend is a downward facing camera on the mast. This allows the captain to see the boat’s surroundings while docking. Meanwhile, visibility forward for picking up a mooring is easy with direct eyesight of the bow.

Optional aft tiller chairs

Our optional tiller chairs compliment the forward helm with two places to steer the boat aft. These are perfect for racing or just feeling the exhilarating performance of this racy yacht (see HH66 Flash as a real world example).

The chairs feature secure arm rests with integrated, push button control of your traveler, daggerboards and an optional hydraulic mainsheet. This is sailing that most people can only dream of.

When will the first HH60 launch and where are they built??

The first of several HH60s are now in production. Hull 01 will complete in mid 2023 and will be shipped to the Med later that year.

We have two fully owned and operated, state-of-the-art production facilities. One is in Xiamen, China and a second in Cebu, Philippines. The HH44 and HH50 are built in Cebu while our larger boats, including the HH60, are build in Xiamen.

What regattas will allow the HH60 to compete?

There are many races around the world in which the HH60 can compete (and win), but the primary class association is OMA (Offshore Multihull Association). This class was formed in 2017 with the mission to establish and promote offshore multihull racing and accurate ratings for the purposes of scoring race events. The association is involved in the Rolex Fastnet Race, Caribbean 600, Les Voiles de Saint Barths, BVI Spring Regatta, Antigua Race Week, Caribbean Multihull Challenge, Aegean 600, NYYC Race Week, Multihull Cup in Mallorca, Stamford YC Vineyard Race, the Rolex Middle Sea race and more. There is also talk of creating a Mutli-Maxi class specifically tailored to support large 60 ‘+ catamarans. HH Catamarans are founding members of this effort.

Why is the LWL reported as 54.02 ft in the Specs?

The HH60 is a longer version of our HH55 and the design features a hull shape designed for high speed sailing in moderate to heavy winds. In these conditions the leeward transom will push deeper into the water, elongating the waterline and increasing performance without depressing the squared off transom behind it (thus limiting drag). So while the transoms sit above the water at anchor, the boat’s performance under sail will be greater than our HH55 design.

Can I customize the boat?

Yes, as our boats get larger, we allow more customization. On the HH60 you can select the exterior paint color, deck colors, interior flooring, laminates, real woods, countertops, mullions and fixtures. We also have several interior layout options you can choose from including different galley designs (with or without an island) and more. Please let us know your goals and we can help you build your dream boat.

What size dingy will fit on the davits?

We recommend a 12 foot tender. The davits are carbon fiber and have a high load capacity and you can fit a larger model if necessary. We also offer the ability to ship a Highfield tender with your boat, if requested.

How does the HH60 compare to the HH66?

The HH60 is in a league with our HH66 and we expect to see them on the race course together often. Sharing the same Morrelli & Melvin DNA, build materials and production facility mean these two boats are more similar than you might think. That said, the HH60 can be owner-operated by an experienced couple, where as our larger HH66 is truly a crewed boat.
