Area sailing schools train skippers 'young and old' to take on the high seas

  • Updated: Jul. 03, 2011, 12:46 a.m. |
  • Published: Jul. 02, 2011, 11:46 p.m.
  • Ron Rop | The Muskegon Chronicle

The White Lake Yacht Club is proud of its history of training sailors.

Now, the club owns the distinction of being the nation's oldest sailing school, with 86 years of uninterrupted training, and no end in sight.

“Many generations have passed through the school,” WLYC sailing instructor Lindsey Gates said.

What began as a “members only” school is now open to the public. Gates said about 85 students, some as young as 8 years old, are being taught how to sail in a typical summer.

White Lake Yacht Club isn't the only sailing school in the area. The Muskegon Yacht Club, Torresen Marine in Muskegon and the Spring Lake Yacht Club also offer sailing schools throughout the summer.

The school operates two yachts on Muskegon Lake and/or Lake Michigan.

Space is limited to four students per yacht. Classes are available throughout the summer.

Classes start July 5, July 18 and Aug. 1. Each session has four classes that last two hours.

All classes include classroom and on-water instruction.

Contact Lindsey Gates at [email protected] or call (231) 292-2065.

Typically, sailing schools include classes for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

At the WLYC, there are four classes of two hours each. The class meets twice a week for two weeks. Each session begins with 10-15 minutes of classroom instruction followed by hands-on instruction on the water.

“For beginners, we discuss and practice boat parts, wind direction, circle of wind and right of way,” Gates said. “The students go out on JY 15s with an instructor and learn how to sail.”

For intermediate sailors, it's more advanced with more detail and more technical terms. They also teach the beginning of racing.

Advanced students focus on racing.

“We practice racing drills on the water and discuss specific racing rules,” Gates said.

Following successful completion of the course, WLYC hosts a graduation in August with a formal program, a guest speaker and certificates.

At Torresen Sailing School, the focus is more toward adult sailors.

“We have mostly adults come through our program,” said Judi Shedd from Torresen Marine, 3003 Lakeshore. “There are kids' programs, but those are usually through the Muskegon Yacht Club on smaller boats. We have a lot of teenagers come through with the parents.”

Torresen has two sailboats available for training — a 28-footer and a 30-footer.

“Our school is a little different,” Shedd said. “Ours is through the American Sailing Association. There is a written test and an on-water test.”

“They have to get an 80 percent on the written test and 100 percent on the water test,” said Jim McColl, Torresen instructor. McColl has been sailing for 40 years and has been an instructor for eight years.

Also, Torresen does not set times for its sailing classes. Instead, classes are scheduled based on the students' needs.

“Last year was very good,” he said. “We were up 35 percent. Last year, I had four days off in July ... I'm supposed to be retired.”
