Pre cooked expensive burger, doughy cold big pretzel with Dijon mustard type sauce, small flavorless crab cake, cold fries, watery cream of crab soup and rude staff.

Matt Ortt Companies, which brings more than 25 years of experience to the Ocean Pines Yacht Club, has been granted a two-year management contract by the Ocean Pines Association.   Overlooking the Isle of Wight Bay and the skyline of Ocean City, the Yacht Club features a two-story building with catering and dining facilities. The upper level is home to a stunning ballroom and deck in addition to a bar and bridal and groom suites.   Downstairs is a casual-to-elegant eatery with indoor and outdoor seating as well as two bars. Outside are a spacious patio with fire pits, Adirondack chairs, a bandstand, and a seasonal Tiki Bar and swimming pool.   The Yacht Club is open to the public, stop by soon!

Ocean Pines yacht club unveils updated menu, interior as summer begins

The Cove at Mumford's Landing (yacht club) and Beach Club is aiming to be the hub for Ocean Pines residents and visitors alike with its newly unveiled interior and restaurant menus. 

The yacht club officially opened on May 17 to a crowd interested to see the changes Matt Ortt Companies made to the Ocean Pines Association's food and beverage division. The yacht club was closed in January after a mold issue was discovered.

The Beach Club is set for a May 25 opening, kicking off Memorial Day weekend. 

Matt Ortt Companies was contracted by the The Ocean Pines Association for two years at $100,000 per year to help reinvent the image through upgraded dining areas, menus and services. The Association can terminate without penalty.

“People are eager to see Matt Ortt Companies take this amenity to the next level,” said Denise Sawyer, director of marketing and public relations for the Ocean Pines Association. 

Sawyer stressed that the yacht club is open to the public and they want everyone to visit what they have to offer. 

“We want it to be open to the public and we want it to be a community atmosphere,” she said. 

Sawyer said the management company has done a great job of tapping into the local demographic as they live locally as well. The new yacht club menu reflects a coastal, casual dining experience with classic dishes done in a new way at affordable prices. 

“We’re taking some of the everyday favorite items of folks who live here like your crab cake, we’re taking that pretzel crab dip combo and we’re giving it to the public in an affordable, yet very desirable and delicious way," Sawyer said.

The Key West pork chop, a favorite of Sawyer's, is new to the updated menu. The chop comes prepared with mojo glaze, fried plantains and corn and black bean rice. The menu is stacked with seafood entrees, pizzas and sandwiches offering variety to yacht club guests.  

As for the Beach Club menu, in an April meeting with Matt Ortt Companies, representatives told attendees to expect a grad and go type menu. 

A Sunday brunch will also be available later in the summer at the yacht club, Sawyer said. 

While the phrase yacht club can sound like an exclusive and fine dining atmosphere, and sometimes it is, Sawyer said most of the time visitors and residents can expect a casual environment. 

The yacht club's cocktail menu is also updated including a variety of crush flavors including watermelon and lime and coconut. 

“They’re taking your original, ordinary orange crush and adding a flair to it,” Sawyer said.

The yacht club will also be bringing back a happy hour starting on May 28 and running daily from 3-6 p.m. Sawyer said previously the happy hour was open to Ocean Pines residents only, but now, everyone can participate in happy hour. 

The interior of the yacht club's dining area has been improved with new interior design and a few flow changes. Sawyer said every piece of space has been used to work effectively. 

The dining area has lost its cafeteria feel and is now welcoming with cool shades of gray, blue and green. The tables and chairs are a warm wood. Lighting fixtures are a square shape, adding dimension to the space, but continuing to make it feel open. 

During the April meeting, company representatives said the Beach Club also underwent renovations. 

Sawyer said the new changes has already garnered positive response. 

With the upgrades to the yacht club, Sawyer said the future of amenity is promising. The Association and Matt Ortt Companies want to see residents and nonresidents think of this as their backyard summer spot and off season spot as Ocean Pines continues to offer programs to the public during the winter and shoulder season. 

“We're hoping that this becomes the hub of Ocean Pines," She said.

I knew the brunch was upstairs, but it would have been nice if there was a least a sign stating that brunch was upstairs. Even better, a hostess at the door greeting guests with a "welcome to the Yacht Club" would be preferable. Upon arriving upstairs we were greeted by smiling faces and very pleasant staff. Our party of 5 was seated at a very large table. It seems that the tables upstairs are geared to a wedding reception rather than a brunch.

No decorations on the walls and a very very loud setting.

The food? Well below average at best. The man making omelets probably never made one before. They were awful. He put tomatoes,ham, and peppers in the pan and sprayed the nonstick spray on the ingredients. As they were bubbling, my wife ordered an egg white omelet. They had to get the batter, then he proceeded to make a scrambled mess out of it. After removing a hair from the omelet, i decided to go to the buffet.

There I found undercooked bacon, sausage, watery cream chipped beef and no toast in sight. After spending $80 without tip I came home and had a bowl of cereal. I know it was opening day and the staff was trying, but I am really worried. If with a new chef and manager the facility produces this type of product, this could be a 5 million dollar flop.

Thanksgiving Family Meals Coming to the Yacht Club

Due to the recent changes in Covid-19 guidelines made by the governor on Wednesday, November 11, the demand for Thanksgiving Family meals was higher than anticipated. We have pushed the limits of our kitchen to its fullest to provide as many Ocean Piners as possible with the ability to stay at home and enjoy a Turkey Dinner with their families. We are sorry we were not able to accommodate everyone's request. -Matt Ortt Companies.

In an effort to help local families bring the holiday safely to their dinner tables, the Ocean Pines Yacht Club announced plans for special Thanksgiving Family Meals, available for delivery or carryout on Nov. 26.

Since taking over operations at the Yacht Club two years ago, the Matt Ortt Companies have made holiday dining-out into a popular tradition in the community. Perhaps the most well received was the annual Thanksgiving buffet that each year drew hundreds of people.

This year, like many things because of the COVID-19 pandemic, plans had to be changed.

“Family is so important to us and we know how important having that traditional, family Thanksgiving dinner is to everyone in Ocean Pines,” Ralph DeAngelus, cofounder of the Matt Ortt Companies, said. “Normally, we would have everyone come to the Yacht Club and sit down with a big table full of family and friends. This year, we felt that bringing that experience to your home was the next best thing.”

Each Thanksgiving Family Meal will feed four people and cost $50, plus tax. Half portions will not be offered.

Meals will be available for both carryout and delivery from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Orders must be placed in advance, by Monday, Nov. 23.

Each Thanksgiving Family Meal will include:

Choice of salad (Caesar or garden)

Roasted white and dark meat turkey

Homestyle stuffing

Creamy mashed potatoes

Glazed sweet potatoes

Fall vegetable medley

Cranberry sauce

Dinner rolls

One whole pumpkin pie

There is no limit to the amount of family meals that can be ordered per household. Beer and wine specials will also be available for pickup and delivery.

“All of us at the Yacht Club will miss seeing everyone at the Yacht Club on Thanksgiving Day. The Ocean Pines public has always been so supportive of us,” DeAngelus said. “We feel like these great homecooked meals with huge portions, brought to your doorstep or available for pickup, will go a long way in keeping that holiday spirit alive.”
