A Guide to the Best Things to do in Saint Jean de Luz

A glittering jewel of the French Basque coastline, the town of Saint Jean de Luz is a charming fishing port which boasts charm and history in equal measure. Best visited over the course of at least a day (with an overnight stay preferable) , here’s your guide to the best things to do in Saint Jean de Luz , as well as what to know before you go.
Saint Jean de Luz is often referred to as St Jean de Luz for short. In the local language of Basque, the town is known as Donibane Lohizune . For more inspiration, be sure to check out our French Basque Country itinerary .
Where is Saint Jean de Luz?
What is st jean de luz known for, the beach (grande plage), stroll along the sea wall , buy local products, enjoy local food and drink , see the lighthouses, les halles , wander the town , walk to the fort de socoa , church of st. john the baptist, place louis xiv painters and bars , maison louis xiv , enjoy the view from la colline sainte-barbe , walk to ciboure, glaces bargeton, mia poké, dunes blanches chez pascal saint jean de luz, how to get to st jean de luz, where to stay in saint jean de luz.
Saint Jean de Luz is located in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, as well as in the Basque province of Labourd. Located within the Bay of Biscay, facing the Atlantic Ocean, the town boasts the unique claim of being the only sheltered bay between Arcachon and Spain.
Nearby towns of note include the resort town of Biarritz and the fishing port of Guéthary . The town of Ciboure (famous for its fish, which is still served in local restaurants to this day) is located just across the River Nivelle and can easily be walked to from Saint Jean de Luz.
The town is most famous for its association with French corsairs during the 17th-century, with ‘corsair’ being a fancy word for pirate. The 17th-century is still considered to be the ‘golden age’ of Saint Jean de Luz, and it was at this time that the town had a population that was only a little bit smaller than that of Bayonne (the biggest city in the region to this day) .
During the Middle Ages, St Jean de Luz had the largest whaling port in the world. Centuries later, Louis XIV became enthralled by the town and was married there. Princess Eugenie and Napoleon III also fell for St Jean de Luz and visited during their stays in the nearby Biarritz (which is around 20 km away).
Best things to do in Saint Jean de Luz
If there’s one thing that the town is particularly known for, it’s the fine sand beach. Located on the seashore on the fringes of town, the beach holds the distinction of the last beach in France before the Spanish border. The great beach of the town is known as the ‘Grande Plage,’ which translates to ‘big beach’ in English.
Truth be told, one of the best ways to enjoy many of Saint Jean de Luz’s charms is to simply wander around the place and let your feet guide you to points that look interesting. A walk along the promenade will reward you with both views of the sea and of the Basque town. The promenade is also where the casino is located.
Particular things to buy from the French Basque region include espadrilles (the woven and canvas shoe actually originates in the region), chilli pepper products, local hams, Basque fabrics (there are stores dedicated entirely to linen sprinkled all over town), and woven baskets and bags.
The French Basque Country is particularly well known for its food and drink, and Saint Jean de Luz is no exception. Local specialities include sheep’s milk cheese (brebis in French), ham from the region, and tapas style plates in some restaurants.
There is not just one lighthouse but several lighthouses dotted around St Jean de Luz and its neighbouring town of Ciboure. The most famous of the lighthouses is the Phare of Saint Jean de Luz, which was built in the 1930s and designed by André Pavlovsky. Just across the River’s mouth, the lighthouse of Ciboure was built around the same time and looks similar in appearance.
Like many French towns, St Jean boasts its very own covered market hall which is known in French as ‘Les Halles’. Wander in during opening hours and you’ll be greeted by vendors selling everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to local souvenirs and cold cuts. If you’re looking for picnic supplies, then Les Halles is the place to head to.
When wandering through any town in this part of the French Basque country, you’ll soon notice one distinctive style feature: the extea. These are whitewashed houses adorned with burgundy red timber trim and matching shutters. The port itself is also incredibly picturesque and is easily one of the most beautiful ports in France.
If you feel like an extra long walk along the seafront, then you must head along the coastline towards Socoa. It’s easy to spot as it’s a 17th-century military fort which still juts out to sea to this day. Unfortunately, you can’t actually enter the fort, but you can still enjoy sweeping views of the Biscay Bay from nearby.
The main church of the town is imposing, grand, dates back to the 13th-century, and is dedicated to St John the Baptist. Constructed in the local style (meaning that it features wooden galleries and a single nave) , this is where Louis XIV married Marie-Thérèse of Austria in 1660.
One of the most picturesque squares in town is that of Louis XIV. Located just a stone’s throw away from the River Nivelle, the lively square boasts plenty of bars, as well as painters who are creating their art ‘en plein air’ (outside). If you want to grab a drink and watch the world go by, then this is the place to visit.
Located on the corner of Place Louis XIV, the illustrious mansion of Maison Louis XIV was built in 1643 and today houses a museum of waxworks. Classified as a historic monument, it was here in 1660 where Louis XIV resided for several months when he married Marie Therese and signed the Treaty des Pyrénées.
If you’re looking for one of the best bird’s eye views in town, then you simply have to head up La Colline Sainte-Barbe, the hill of Saint Barbe. Visitors who climb to the top will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the town and beach below, and will also be able to visit the little chapel dedicated to Saint Barbe.
Located just across the river from Saint Jean de Luz, Ciboure has little by way of attractions but offers a quieter pace of life and just as stunning views as its more lively neighbour. You can walk across the bridge from St Jean de Luz to Ciboure in just under ten minutes. While in Ciboure, be sure not to miss the amazing church in the heart of town.
Where to eat in Saint Jean de Luz
Of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to the seaside without eating at least an ice cream or two! Hands down, the best ice cream in town is from Glaces Bargeton. The ice cream store is located along rue Joseph Garat and serves up ice cream and sorbets in a homemade waffle cone or a cup. The ice cream is so good that the vanilla flavour won best vanilla ice cream in France in 2019!
One of the freshest poké bowls I’ve ever enjoyed was actually in St Jean de Luz at Mia Poké, which is on the road leading between the main church of the town and the seafront. There are a variety of healthy options available, as well as a vegan bowl where you can choose the fruits and vegetables you want.
One of the best cream puffs in all of France is to be found at the chain of stores ‘Dunes Blanches Chez Pascal’. The only thing sold in the store is a cream puff, which is sold in two flavours. There is the classic Chantilly cream flavour, as well as a tourist flavour that changes every so often.
Whether you’re looking to head to the town for a day, a weekend, or longer still, it’s worth noting that there are a plethora of transportation options to enable you to reach the town. The best way to get to Saint Jean de Luz is from Biarritz.
You don’t need to rent a car from Biarritz but can instead take the local bus system. In order to get from Biarritz to Saint Jean de Luz, you’ll need to take two different buses. You can purchase an unlimited transport card for €5,20 at the chronoplus Biarritz bus office, which is located close to the tourist office.
You can take the 44 bus from the Mairie of Biarritz to the Church at Bidart (Eglise). Then, you just need to take the 03 bus towards Saint Jean de Luz. Once in St Jean de Luz, it’s a five to ten minute walk to reach the promenade overlooking the sea.
Thanks to its status as a popular resort town among French travellers, there’s no shortage of accommodation options in Saint Jean de Luz to suit almost any style, taste, and travel budget. Here are some of the best places to stay in the French Basque town based on web-reviews and location:
Budget: This low cost B&B is actually located a short drive from St Jean de Luz town centre, meaning that you’ll likely need your own car if you want to stay here. However, it is much lower than other hotels in the area and boasts amenities such as free parking and air conditioning. Check prices and availability here.
Mid-range: Well-reviewed and overlooking the port itself, this three-star hotel is situated just over a five minute walk from the beach and highlights include free Wi-Fi and air-conditioning. Check prices and availability here.
Luxury: for the crème de la crème of staying in Saint Jean de Luz, you’ll want to check yourself into this five-star accommodation. Highlights include a pool, spa, hot tub, and ease of access to all of the major attractions in town thanks to this hotel’s enviable sea-front location. Check prices and availability here.

Saint-Jean-de-Luz on the French Atlantic Coast
Easily one of the most attractive cities in the Basque Country , from its pretty beaches to its attractive old quarter, Saint-Jean-de-Luz ( Donibane Lohizune in Basque) is a jewel in the Basque Country crown. This small beach community is charming, from its port lined with colorful boats to its boutique shops selling surfing gear and lessons year-round. And due to its balmy climate, it’s both a winter and summer resort.
Where Is Saint-Jean-de-Luz?
Saint-Jean-de-Luz is on the French Atlantic coast , the last major town before the border into Spain just six miles (10 kilometers) away. It’s in the Pyrénées-Atlantique department of France and its nearest neighbors are Biarritz and Bayonne.
How to Get There
Take the train or fly to Biarritz . Then take a train (every 12 minutes) to Saint-Jean station on av de Verdun on the edge of the town center and near the beach.
A Little History
Saint-Jean was a wealthy port from its Atlantic fishing and whaling (and the even more lucrative profession of pirates) from the 17th century onwards. But the town’s most illustrious event was the marriage of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King" to Maria Theresa, the Infanta of Spain on June 9, 1660.
The town figured later in the ongoing conflicts between France and England when the Duke of Wellington set up his headquarters here during the Peninsular War of 1813-14.
Saint-Jean was always a strategic port. In World War II, it was the place where thousands of soldiers from the Polish Army in France, Polish officials, British nationals and French who had kept on fighting against Germany after General de Gaulle’s plea to continue the war, were evacuated in 1940 to the UK. They were taken out to the passenger ships that took part in the evacuation bound for Liverpool.
What to See
First and foremost, Saint-Jean-de-Luz stands in a beautiful and protected sandy bay. It has good beaches, making it ideal for families. Surfers can make their way up to Biarritz for the pounding Atlantic waves that make this such a big draw for the athletic.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz’s success as a fishing port was due to its unique protection. The long stretch southwards from the Bay of Arcachon near Bordeaux has some of the best surfing in France with its exposure to the great breakers of the Atlantic ocean. But Saint-Jean is protected by being on an estuary between two headlands, a natural barrier that was extended by huge dikes and the Artha breakwaters. You get a great view from the quays across the harbor to the old town.
The Old Town
Walk around the streets for some delightful half-timbered mansions, built by the wealthy shipowners and merchants of the town. You can’t miss the two most impressive. The Maison de L’Infante ( Quai de l’Infante ) is an imposing 4-story redbrick and stone building that once belonged to the wealthy Haraneder family. The infanta stayed here with her future mother-in-law, Anne of Austria, before her wedding. Today you see the large 17th-century room on the first floor with a huge ceiling painted from the Fontainebleau school and an enormous fireplace. It’s imposing rather than cozy, not the best place for that pre-wedding night. The marriage was not the greatest of successes with Louis XIV straying many times and Maria-Theresa finding consolation in religion. There were several children though none of them survived to become ruler of France. Maria Theresa died in 1683.
The French king stayed at the Maison Louis XIV (6 place Louis XIV) which is magnificent. It was built for Johanis de Lohobiague in 1635 but was renamed after young Louis stayed here in 1660 before his marriage. Inside you get to see different rooms including the magnificent bedchamber (where the business of state was conducted) as well as the kitchen.
The other building associated with the marriage is the church of St-Jean-Baptiste on the main shopping and tourist street (rue Gambetta). The church, dating from the 15th century, is the largest and most famous Basque church in France. From the outside it looks plain; go inside, however, for a glorious, highly-decorated church with a vaulted roof of painted panels. The three tiers of dark oak galleries with wrought-iron staircases that line three sides were reserved for men; women sat at ground level. There’s a gold altarpiece from the 1670s and a 17th-century pulpit to keep your interest. Don’t miss the bricked-up doorway on the outside which was used by the royal pair, then closed forever.
Year-Round Surfing
You can surf all year round on the beaches at Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Families should stick to the Grande Plage beach in the town and well protected. There are lifeguards on duty from June to mid-September, and you can hire sunbeds and windbreaks. There are lifeguards on duty daily (from 11 a.m.) from June to mid-September, plus at the weekend in May.
Go a little further out of town for the surfing beaches of Plage d’Erromardie, Plage de Mayarco, Plage de Lafiténia, and Plage de Cénitz, both of which are known as particularly good surfing beaches.
With such a reputation, there are excellent surf shops where you can buy or hire equipment and also book lessons for one-off classes or a week-long immersion into the art.
Where to Stay and Eat
- Les Goëlands (4-6 av d’Etcheverry) is housed in two turn-of-the-century villas near the beach and old town. Ask for a room with a balcony and sea view. They have a restaurant, a garden, and free parking.
- Le Petit Trianon (56 bd Victor-Hugo) is a charming little hotel near the beach with small brightly decorated rooms and good bathrooms. Take the buffet breakfast on the terrace in summer.
- The smart 3-star Hotel de la Plage (Promenade Jacques Thibaud) has balconies looking right over the sea and less expensive rooms overlooking the town. It’s comfortable and well run, with good bathrooms and a good restaurant, La Brouillarta. You'll get good food and if you’re lucky you might catch a view from the huge windows of the brouillarta itself, a storm that rolls in from the sea.
- Zoko Moko ’s (6 rue Mazarin) stone walls and pristine white tables and chairs set the stage for some excellent cooking. It’s more expensive than many of the town’s restaurants but worth the price for top seafood and fresh ingredients.
Thalassotherapy
Saint-Jean is a great getaway to experience sea-based spa therapy, and indulge in thermal spa waters. You can find everything from underwater hydro massage to aqua gym classes. There are two main spas and health resorts: Loreamar Thalasso Spa and Thalazur Thalasso Spa .
Tourist Office : Opposite the fish market/corner of bd Victor Hugo and rue Bernard Jaureguiberry

Saint-Jean-de-Luz: the historic centre
Donibane Lohizuneko parte zaharra
Louis XIV square
Not to be missed, the seashore promenade, sainte-barbe hill, the grande plage.
Nestled in the centre of a vast bay open to the ocean and set against a mountain backdrop, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the city of swashbuckling privateers, has developed while preserving its identity. Although the time has long gone when whale hunters set sail on the open seas venturing as far as Newfoundland, the long-liners and gill-netters still bustle in and out of this pretty fishing port. The pedestrian streets linking the ocean to the historic centre and its imposing houses bear witness to the fortune made by the 17th century ship-owners and are a reminder that the Sun King married here in 1660.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz has established itself as a wellness destination with 2 thalassotherapy centres open all year round. Life is peaceful and relaxed, there are an array of culinary delights to try, varied activities to enjoy and colourful characters to meet.
Some key moments from history
The marriage of Louis XIV
Louis XIV eskontza
On 9 June 1660, Louis XIV and Maria Theresa, the Infanta of Spain, were married in Saint-Jean-de-Luz . Their marriage brought to fruition the rapprochement between France and Spain, the two main European powers of that time, and was arranged through the Treaty of the Pyrenees negotiated by Mazarin and signed on 7 November of the previous year.
Works to protect the bay
Storms having swept away the bay’s natural defences, Napoleon III ordered the construction of 3 breakwaters to protect the Bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz - Ciboure ...
Saint-Jean-de-Luz: home to the privateers
Donibane lohizune : hiriko kortsarioak
There was a time when the town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz was mainly inhabited by privateers . It was even given the nickname “ Nest of Vipers ” back in the 17th century by the English who feared the formidable Basque fishermen turned privateers .
Pays d'Art et d'Histoire
In 2016, the towns of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Ciboure obtained the Pays d'Art et d'Histoire seal of approval . Specialised guides offer a year-round programme of activities, events and visits involving the heritage of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Ciboure.

Louis XIV square is the beating heart of the historic town centre . Surrounded by superb and imposing houses , including Maison Louis XIV and the Hôtel de Ville guildhall, it is one of the town’s most lively places .
It is also the town’s central square where the main streets converge: Rue Gambetta, a pedestrian street lined with shops, direct access from the square to the port and the narrow Rue de la République that leads directly to the Grande Plage.
Activities staged on the bandstand in the centre of square regularly contribute to the party atmosphere. Terraces of the four bar-restaurants are the ideal place for inhabitants of Saint-Jean-de-Luz (aka the “Luziens”) to meet for coffee or drinks. Artists with their easels set up under the canopy provided by gnarled branches of pollarded plane trees.
Musical events are held on the bandstand at 11:30am every Sunday and on national holidays from Easter to All Saints’ Day. The toro de fuego fireworks show and confetti battle is held on Wednesdays and Sundays during the summer months, a tradition perpetuated since 1926.
A fun and family-friendly atmosphere guaranteed.
The fishing port
The bustling port is a must-visit place with its colourful fishing boats . It is just opposite the Maison de l’Infante and houses of the 17th century ship-owners who made their fortune from cod fishing, whale hunting and their activities as the King’s privateers. Tuna , sardine , anchovy and line-caught hake are still fished today and it is possible to buy the freshly-caught fish every morning at the fishmongers’ stands in the covered marketplace. From April to October, a boat trip will take you out to sea to discover the Basque coastline from a different angle.
The Maison de l'Infante
The Maison de l'Infante or Joanoenia was built around 1640 by the Basque ship-owner Joannot de Haraneder. It’s easy to spot this famous building thanks to its pink brick and stone towers and façades , and its two Italian-style galleries with five arches on the main façade . In June 1660, Maria Theresa, the Infanta of Spain stayed here in June 1660 when she married King Louis XIV on 9 June 1660 in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church
Saint Jean-Baptiste Church is renowned for its 17th century retable and as being the church where Louis XIV and Maria Theresa , the Infanta of Spain married in 1660. Basque choir and classical music concerts are held inside the church all year round. The classical music festival dedicated to Maurice Ravel traditionally opens on the last Sunday of August with the Messe des Corsaires (the Privateers’ Mass).
Maison Louis XIV
The magnificent 17th century mansion, Lohobiague-enea , better known by the name Maison Louis XIV, is located near the port in the historic centre of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Visits inside Maison Louis XIV are organised throughout the year.
"Cœur de Ville" visit
This " Coeur de Ville " visit of the town centre is a great way to discover the traditional fishing port , the 17th century ship-owners’ houses and, of course, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church , where the marriage of Louis XIV and the Spanish Infanta was celebrated. You will also be won over by the beach promenade and its charming houses with their footbridges that bear witness to the nascent architecture of this seaside town appreciated from the time of the Belle Époque .
Reservations recommended
The beach and promenade along the bay stretches from Socoa Fort to the Sainte-Barbe headland . Very early on, the town had a type of threshold seawall guaranteeing protection from the onslaughts of the sea that the Luziens called the “ jetty ” and which became a place to stroll along set against a backdrop of the Basque mountains .
Along the seafront there are some beautiful hotels, two thalassotherapy centres, some 19th century houses and very rare recent constructions.
The Jacques Thibaud promenade , which runs from Pavlovsky’s red Art Deco lighthouse to the Pergola, is fronted by red-shuttered town houses with their footbridges looking out over the Grande Plage and one of France’s most beautiful bays. .
The Pergola, designed by architect Mallet-Stevens in 1927, is home to some beachwear and souvenir shops, prêt-à-porter boutiques, restaurants and ice cream parlours.
After the Pergola is the Flots Bleus promenade that leads to Sainte-Barbe.
A haven of greenery to the north of Saint-Jean-de-Luz Bay catches the eye.
This rocky promontory , laid out as a public park , extends an open invitation to stroll, relax and just breathe in the sea air. There are children’s playground games, snack bars, park benches, an orientation table and lighthouse (a former chapel).
On Sainte-Barbe hill, you will be able to see all along the Basque coast. It offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Saint-Jean-de-Luz Bay and is one of the favourite spots for anyone wanting to watch the sun set over the ocean .
You can also continue your walk to the Sainte-Barbe neighbourhood.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz’ Grande Plage
Just a stone’s throw from Louis XIV Square and the port , the Grande Plage is the not-to-be-missed beach in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Fine sand , calm water protected by three breakwaters, the beach is ideal for the whole family, especially for very young children. Several generations of Luziens regularly meet up on the beach.
Shopping and strolling
Rue Gambetta , Rue Loquin and Rue de la République , three pedestrian streets famous for their bustling, all-year-round commercial activity that contribute to Saint-Jean-de-Luz’ lively and dynamic profile. Boulevards Victor Hugo and Thiers that encircle the town centre have a wealth of food shops, prêt-à-porter boutiques, service providers and art galleries.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz provides you with the special opportunity of shopping in long-established , specialist enterprises like Maison Adam patisserie , Maison Laffargue leather goods and Maison Lartigue 1910 Basque linen that are all just a stone’s throw from the ocean.
Traditional shops, local products, Basque crafts, up-to-the-minute retail outlets, shops are open all year round including on Sundays and national holidays .
On Tuesdays and Fridays all year round, and on Saturday in July and August, local producers crowd around the traditional Halles covered market, and set up their stalls on the forecourt to display their wares.

Saint-Jean-de-Luz
- 1.3 By train
- 2 Get around
- 3 See and do
Saint-Jean-de-Luz & Ciboure are small towns at the mouth of the River Nivelle, near the border with Spain. St Jean, the larger, is east of the river and straight in front of the railway station, while Ciboure is a village some 500 m west across the river bridge - for practical purposes they're a single community. Their chief attraction is their well preserved centres, with Basque-style houses. St Jean is also a beach resort.
Get in [ edit ]
By car [ edit ].
Saint-Jean-de-Luz is located on highways D810 and A63 (exit 3) about 25 km southwest of Bayonne and 15 km northeast of the border with Spain .
By bus [ edit ]
The bus halt is by the railway station. About ten buses a day run west to Hendaye and east to Biarritz and Bayonne.
By train [ edit ]
St Jean is on the main line which runs north to Biarritz and Bayonne , thence to Bordeaux and Paris Montparnasse: the TGVs to Paris stop here. Change at Bayonne for trains to & from Toulouse and the Pyrenees towns. The main line continues south to terminate at Hendaye on the border: Spanish railway gauge doesn't match standard European, so you have to change trains for San Sebastian / Donostia and for Madrid.
Get around [ edit ]
The old town is pedestrianized. Parking is available nearby and further out from the old town; free parking is available near the train station. All parking fills quickly during the busy summer months.
See and do [ edit ]
- Walk the old centres. St Jean's old town is very attractive with a mix of buildings in the Basque colours of white, red and green (the Basque colours). Maison Louis XIV is where the king stayed before his marriage to Maria Teresa: it's sometimes open for tours in mid-summer. The beach ("Grand Plage") stretches east of the estuary and gets busy in summer.
- Église St-Vincent in Ciboure has similar galleries, and an odd bell-tower with a three-tiered roof.
Buy [ edit ]
The main shopping street is Rue Gambetta with lots of little shops, cafes and boutiques. Basque-related items include local condiments and textiles with Basque colours and patterns.
The covered market has a wide selection of food, including a small restaurant.
Eat [ edit ]
Lots of eating places in St Jean, and several in Ciboure.
- Chez Maya ( Le Petit Grill Basque ), 2 rue St-Jacques . Authentic Basque specialties. ( updated Feb 2018 )
Drink [ edit ]
- Pub du Corsaire , 16 rue de la Republique . Daily 17:00-02:00 . Great selection of beers. ( updated Feb 2018 )
Sleep [ edit ]
Many visitors are on day-trips, but as a beach resort there's accommodation here. Book ahead if you come mid-summer.
- Hotel de la Plage , 48 Promenade Jacques Thiboud ( at junction with rue Garat ), ☏ +33 5 59 51 03 44 , [email protected] . 3 star, white building with red shutters looking onto beach. Includes bar / restaurant Le Brouillarta. ( updated Feb 2018 )
