Yacht Charter in Thailand
Thailand yacht charter
Thailand is the bustling sailing hub of Southeast Asia. Offering the most stunning, vast stretches of coastline and unparalleled tropical beauty, Thailand has become a sailing playground for superyachts from around the world. With year-round perfect sailing conditions, hundreds of smaller islands nearby to each other, the possibilities for yacht charters in Thailand are endless. There are two famous regions for yacht charters in Thailand: the southern Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Both offer spectacular natural scenery, peaceful sailing grounds, sheltered bays, and the most ideal weather perfect for cruising.
How much to charter a yacht in Thailand?
There is every imaginable type of yacht in Thailand for a yacht charter. Whether you are a couple in search for a romantic tropical getaway, or a group of friends wanting to enjoy endless parties on deck, or a family looking for the most memorable holiday in Thailand, there's a yacht perfect for your needs. A 40-foot, 3-cabin catamaran for two people on board can coast around $4,200 for seven nights, while a 47-foot sailing catamaran with four cabins can cost about $5,000 for a week's rent. Additionally, a 134-foot, 5-cabin motor yacht can cost around $120,000 for seven nights for ten people on board.
What are the most popular yacht holidays in Thailand?
Two regions in Thailand offer the most popular and most visited by yacht enthusiasts: the islands and coast of the Andaman and the Gulf of Thailand. Let's start with the more popular sailing ground, which is the Andaman Sea. Phuket is the jewel of the Andaman, and it's the most famous island in Thailand. Millions of tourists worldwide visit the island each year for its rich culture and history, and the breathtaking natural beauty surrounding the islands on the Andaman. Yacht charters in Phuket have plenty of options for itineraries, which include Phang Nga Bay, a World Heritage Site, and teeming with smaller islets made of limestone that seem to rise from the sea and into the sky.
With emerald green waters, pristine white beaches, and a plethora of secluded coves, bays, secret beaches, and caves, Phuket and its seas are genuinely a playground for water worshippers. Yacht charters can hop from one island to another in the archipelago of Ao Phang Nga National Park, with lush mangrove forests, limestone pinnacles, and hidden coves on the coast. Or they could head to the beautiful and famous Phi Phi Islands, with breathtaking views, powder white sand beaches, and all the shades of blue in its crystal clear waters. Other popular cruising spots include Krabi's islands, with over a hundred to explore, and the world-class dive spots of Similan and Surin Islands.
On the other side of Thailand, the Gulf of Thailand's coastal towns and islands offer a different atmosphere. More laid-back, rustic, and charming, the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Chang, and the Ang Thong National Park are the most famous cruising spots for yacht charters. Koh Samui is world-famous for its laid back atmosphere but also home to million-dollar villas and 5-start mega-resorts. It's the second most visited island in Thailand but offers a more family-friendly and romantic appeal than Phuket's crowded and tourist spots. Ang Thong National Park, a protected nature reserve, features 40 islands to explore, with each one being close to one another. Other notable cursing destinations in the Gulf of Thailand include Koh Tao and Koh Chang.
Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in Thailand?
Being the sailing center of Southeast Asia, Thailand features luxury yacht charter destinations that offer a plethora of luxury yacht itineraries to choose from. Phuket is the top spot for luxury yacht charters in Thailand, with two world-class marinas: the Yacht Haven Marina, and the Ao Po Grand Marina, offering luxury services and hundreds of berths. Phuket also plays host to international regattas, such as the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, Asia's biggest and most popular regatta. The Phuket International Boat Show also happens once a year on the island, where some of the world's best superyachts are on show.
The seaside resort city of Pattaya is another luxury yacht destination in Thailand. Close to Bangkok, this city is a favorite weekend destination for locals, offering beaches and nearby islands to explore. It is also home to the Ocean Marina Yacht Club, another world-class marina in Thailand. Pattaya also plays host to The Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show, another event in Thailand where superyachts from all over the world are showcased. While Koh Samui doesn't have a marina, the islands offer many safe anchorages for luxury yachts to drop anchor.
Koh Samui has become a favorite for luxury yacht charters because of its popularity with the rich and famous. Offering luxury villas, resorts, spas, and indulgent experiences, superyachts have made their way to Koh Samui and called it home during the country's dry season of November to April. Thailand's magical islands and calms seas offer perfect sailing conditions in Southeast Asia. And with bustling tourism infrastructure, luxury villas, and resorts found on the coast, it is no wonder yacht charters are one of the best ways to enjoy an authentic Thai holiday.

Thailand Yacht Charter Guide
Thailand's, Phuket makes a perfect base for your Thailand yacht charter in the Andaman Sea with it's international airport and central location. Phuket is conveniently located close to Burma, Malaysia and the Indonesian Archipelago. Although the potential cruising ground is extensive, Thailand alone holds plenty to keep anyone entertained on a yacht charter - in fact, you'll probably never want to leave. Phuket is a haven of activity with modern resorts, restaurants, nightlife and great shopping, for those who are interested. For those who aren't, you'll be pleased to know that once you start sailing you'll be more likely to come across stunning isolated beaches and wildlife, than flashy nightclubs.
Some Key Yacht Charter Hot Spots In Thailand:
The luscious landscape of Phuket is perfect for a luxury yacht charter: Untouched bays filled with blue water and silky sands are only a short cruise away from the modern delights of resorts, spas, clubs and high-end shops.
Thailand is gaining in popularity as a superyacht destination, offering exceptional berthing services and a mix of modern and traditional landmarks and activities. Snorkel in the clear waters and discover a myriad of marine life with family and friends, or dive deeper to swim with manta rays and bull sharks. Find your own private beach and learn a new skill on your holiday with jet ski instructors, dive masters and kite surfing instructors a possibility among your luxury yacht charter crew.
The Andaman Sea
Whether you want to visit as many destinations as possible or lounge about in one tropical paradise, the Andaman Islands are in an excellent position to include in a South-East Asia yacht charter: To the north, Myanmar (Burma) is strikingly different in its scenery while retaining all the mystical allure that draws holidaymakers to the region. Relax along the deserted beaches of the Mergui Archipelago and savour time spent with family and friends without any modern day distractions.
A superb anchorage and highlight for yacht charters, is Pang Nag Bay. Famed for its sea mountains that rise vertically out of the turquoise waters, they truly defy gravity and belief. There are numerous safe anchorages in the bay. Use a tender or dinghy to explore the quaint little coves, fantastic caves and inland lakes. Buy fresh seafood from the local fisherman to enjoy on board your charter yacht. Grill it up on your aft deck BBQ, or have is specially prepared by your chef.
Cruise on to Koh Phi Phi, one of the most spectacular islands of Thailand. Enjoy magnificent scenery, secluded bays and white sandy beaches on your yacht charter vacation. Follow a jungle trail on a mountain trek or enjoy swimming in the clear, turquoise waters. Relax on your charter yacht and enjoy the warmth of the tropical sun.
One of the things I love about Thailand is the way restaurants set up their little tables and chairs on the beaches at night. The candlelight flickers in the gentle breeze and the moon reflects off the rippling water and for a moment, you’re in the most romantic place in the world. Koh Phi Phi has grown enough commercially to have a great range of restaurants and live entertainment to suit all tastes.
There are hundreds of less developed islands also, to enjoy on your yacht charter vacation. The area is home to several national parks and reefs, which offer great opportunities for diving and fishing. For those dedicated enough to cruise out to the continental shelf, near the Similian Islands, there is some fantastic game fishing and the lure of the famous Black Marlin.
Thailand is a romantic and alluring destination for any yacht charter vacation. It has everything you could hope for in man and nature. The sailing conditions are perfect all year, the environment is stunning, the people delightful, and the food, delicious. No matter how long your yacht charter lasts, you'll probably leave thinking it wasn’t long enough!
Thailand, Phuket and the Andaman Sea are gaining increasing popularity as a top yacht charter destinations because there are so many interesting things do see and do and yacht charterers really feel like they are in a very different place from home. All the main types of yacht charter are available such as motor, sailing, dive charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and off-course the ever increasing superyacht charter.

New to charter?
The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.
Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.
All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Thailand’s west coast is known for its tropical weather. Being situated near the equator, the country’s southern reaches can get quite hot, and the region does have a rainy season. For the best weather, head to Thailand during the peak charter season – from November to April – although if you don’t mind the heat or occasional rain, you can enjoy a Thailand yacht charter any time of year.
- When to Go : The dry months in Thailand are November to April, and this is primarily when charter guests flock to the country. From May to October, Thailand experiences its Southwest Monsoon, during which the winds pick up and rain is more common.
- What to Expect : During the dry season, Thailand offers ideal weather conditions in the mid-80s. It can get hot, but with perfect-temperature waters, you can always cool off. From May to October, the winds pick up and rain is much more common – there’s typically a rain shower in the afternoon, and can rain for a few days continuously. From July to October, the rain is much more constant, with as many as 5 days or more of continuous rain.
- Water Conditions : No matter the time of year, the waters in Thailand are perfect for swimming. They’re bathwater warm – usually in the mid-70s or 80s. And from November to April, the conditions are perfect for sailing, with calm waters and 2-3 foot waves.
Thailand Yacht Charters – What to Do & See
The waters around Phuket aren’t just beautiful, they’re dotted with fun, exotic destinations, and plenty of things to do. From spas offering traditional Thai massages, to undiscovered beaches, and gorgeous islands, Thailand’s west coast offers charter guests a long list of adventures, experiences, and explorations.
Beach Party in the Phi Phi Islands
The Phi Phi Islands are in the middle of the beautiful Andaman Sea, and the archipelago is well-known for its out-of-this-world beaches. Maya Beach – made famous by the Leo DiCaprio movie The Beach – is located here, as are plenty of other quieter and just-as-awe-inspiring beaches. (Monkey Beach, named for its native dwellers is another favorite!) Whether you’re in the mood for a picnic, or you want to party around the bonfire, the Phi Phi Islands are a must-visit destination.
Than Bok Khorani National Park
Located about 30 miles north of Ao Nang Beach, you’ll find the pristine jungles and mangroves of Than Bok Park . Known for its waterfalls and planked walking paths, the park offers charter guests a natural refuge that’s perfect for hiking, biking and relaxing in the cool waters of the park’s many waterfalls. Looking for some excitement? The park’s Tree Top Adventure Park offers canopy tours – which turn your trip to the park into a high-flying adventure.
Rock climbing
Limestone cliffs dot the coastlines around Phuket and Phang Nga Bay. That’s why climbers from around the world flock here. The limestone cliffs are natural rock-climbing gyms, and they’re also extremely beautiful. In Krabi, the cliffs off Railay Beach offer incredible panoramic views, as well as challenging climbing. Book a trip with one of the region’s many climbing outfits, for a day of adventure.
Temple Tours
Thailand’s rich cultural heritage is one of the biggest draws for tourists. And all over, visitors are welcomed by ancient temples in exotic locales. One of the region’s best is Tiger Cave Temple . Located about 15 miles northeast of Railay Beach in Krabi, the temple is in a lush jungle tucked away in the mountains. The ancient architecture, its expansive views, and the temple’s golden Buddha statue are some of the reasons to visit, and during your trip, you’ll be able to take numerous postcard-worthy photos. Don’t forget the camera!
Water Sports
Thanks to Thailand’s tropical climate, the region’s waters are balmy year-round – perfect for a swim or any number of watersports. Surfing is popular south of Phuket in hamlets like Nai Harn, while sea kayaking can be done in any of Thailand’s numerous lagoons. Whether you like kitesurfing, waterskiing, or standup paddleboarding, there are plenty of idyllic coves and beaches to discover while on your Thailand yacht charter in the Andaman Sea.
The Andaman Sea is a sportfishing mecca, as anglers from around the world come here for the region’s bill fish and tuna fishing. Marlin and Sailfish – two billfish varieties – are big game in the waters, as are Whitefin and Yellowfin tuna. Fishing is particularly fruitful during the high season from November to April.
Hot Springs
Throughout the province of Krabi, natural hot springs pools are tucked away in lush jungle landscapes, and the waters are rich with relaxing minerals. Check out Namtok Ron, a hot springs waterfall, which is a popular spot inland in the Khlong Tom district. The pools, which sit in the middle of a running river, offer the best of the best in relaxation.
Island Hopping
Phang Nga Bay is home to more than 1,000 tiny islands, offering yacht charter guests the perfect landscape to explore by sea. The famous James Bond Island – which was featured The Man with the Golden Gun – is known for its limestone towers and is quite popular. Yet, there are plenty of other lesser-known and quieter islands to explore in the bay. In the south, you’ll find other island chains including the Phi Phi Islands, as well as 70+ islands near Ko Lanta.
Spas and Wellness
Thailand is a destination for wellness, as travelers journey here to take part in mindfulness seminars and relaxation retreats. In every town, you’ll find a spa offering authentic Thai massage, as well as tailored detox programs and exotic beauty treatments. Spend the day at the spa or invite a masseuse on board for a day of pampering.
Phuket Yacht Charter
Phuket is Thailand’s principal charter destination and the region offers fun-filled itineraries. From the white sandy beaches and legendary nightclubs, to the incredible snorkeling and dazzling nearby islands, Phuket charters offer plenty to do and explore. Some spots to explore on your Phuket charter include:
- Phuket West Coast – Dozens of beautiful, secluded beaches can be found on the west coast of the Phuket peninsula. Freedom Beach, a hidden beach half-moon beach that stretches for nearly 1000 feet, is a must-see.
- Phi Phi Islands – Located about 18 miles off Phuket’s coast, Ko Phi Phi National Park showcases the natural beauty of the region. Maya Bay, Mosquito Island and Bamboo Island are all worthy of exploration.
- Raja Island – You’ll find Raja Island about 12 miles off of Phuket. This secluded tropical island is straight out of a postcard, and it’s great for snorkeling, diving and enjoying the soft-sand beach.
- Hong Islands – The beautiful limestone cliffs of the Hong Islands are a popular destination on Phuket yacht charters. Explore the islands by boat or on foot.
Andaman Sea Yacht Charters
The Andaman Sea is one of the most popular charter destinations in Thailand. This legendary cruising ground is exotic and naturally beautiful, and offers charter guests a once-in-a-lifetime cruising experience. From the pristine Similan Islands, to the stunning granite rock formations, adventure awaits on Andaman Sea charters.
The Similan Islands, the best-known island groups in the Andaman Sea , are cherished for their picturesque bays, sparkling beaches, and dazzling coral reefs welcome visitors here. Additionally, the islands of Koh Lanta – which are secluded and rustic – offer dazzling beaches.

Why Thailand is an up and coming destination for yachting
Characterised by warm, vibrant seas and beachfront hospitality, Thailand has piqued the curiosity of yacht owners for decades. But the country’s infamous bureaucracy has posed a barrier to superyacht growth in the past. Foreign-flagged yachts were previously only able to visit Thailand as part of a multi-country itinerary and, upon arrival in Thai waters, had to pay a hefty import tax on the value of the yacht.
With the country’s new Foreign Charter License (2022), however, superyachts are now only expected to pay VAT from the revenue they generate during their stay. Combined with the removal of all COVID restrictions at the end of 2022, 2023 marked a promising year of growth for the region's marine tourism – with this summer season set to continue on this trajectory. BOAT takes a look at what Thailand has to offer the visiting superyacht...
The best beaches in Thailand for superyachts
Pansea beach, choeng thale.
While this beach may technically be free for public use, there's no public path to be seen. Fringed with coconut trees, the 250-metre stretch of sand is only accessible through the grounds of luxury resorts Amanpuri and The Surin. A yachting excursion, therefore, is probably the most convenient way to experience it – so anchor nearby and enjoy. While visiting, you're also likely to spot a group of local masseuses on shore, known to offer traditional massages right in front of The Surin's cottage-style suites.
Railay Beach, Krabi
This small, secluded bay can only be reached via boat, stranded as it is at the tip of the Railay Peninsula. But those who decide to venture on will find Thailand at its best, replete with coconut trees and jade-coloured waters. Unsurprisingly, rock climbing is incredibly popular here, with visitors often spotting a daredevil or two clinging to a cliff face. Nearby, the Phra Nang Cave is a sacred site to the local fisherman, worth visiting for its saw-toothed stalactites and shrine strewn with incense, flowers and fertility lingams.
Pattaya Beach, Chon Buri
Unfurling along the edge of Thailand's second most-visited city, Pattaya Beach is a nightlife haven that's drawn international tourists since the Vietnam War. The promenade is home to Central Festival Pattaya Beach Mall – Asia's largest beachfront mall – while those looking for cultural sights can set sail for the Sanctuary of Truth. An unfinished castle-come-museum, its ornamental towers of takien and teak make it the largest wooden structure in Thailand (and a spectacular sight from the water).
The top hotels in Thailand for superyachts
The racha, phuket.
The Racha is a collection of white-washed villas that barely peek above the resort's twenty acres of jungle. Facing the everclear waters of Batok Bay, its Sunset Restaurant serves unpretentious Thai food complemented by the gentle thrums of live music. Dishes include Northern-style minced chicken and steamed white snapper, all flavoured by herbs from the resort's own hydroponic farm. Visit the Anumba Spa for their cooling aloe vera body wraps – the perfect remedy to a day spent on a sundeck.
Nearby Marinas: Ao Po Grand Marina, Royal Phuket Marina, Phuket Boat Lagoon
The Village Coconut Island, Phuket
Just off the coast of Phuket is the thick-foliaged Koh Maprao (or Coconut Island), after which this village of villas is named. Their softly-lit restaurant, Koko, serves several twists on Japanese cuisine. Expect tuna tartare dressed with feta cheese and capers, or a surf and turf with wagyu as its centrepiece. Koko also pride themselves on their creative cocktail menu, with the Castaway – made with flor de cana rum, homemade syrup and pineapple juice, among others – being highly recommended.
Nearby Marinas: Royal Phuket Marina, Ao Po Grand Marina, Phuket Boat Lagoon
Mason Pattaya, Chon Buri
Mason Pattaya rests on the tipping point between Pattaya's city centre and a local fishing village, offering visiting superyachts easy access to both worlds. Designed by award-winning Thai architect Vasu Virajsilp, the hotel's infinity rooftop (and 12-metre pool) is worth the climb for its far-flung views of Na Jomtien beach. The Zila stone massage is their spa signature, chosen for the mineral's reported healing properties. The stones themselves are sourced from Angsila, an artisanal rock-carving community known as "the stone basin" of the Chon Buri Province.
Nearby Marinas: Ocean Marina Yacht Club
Ana Anan Resort and Villa, Chon Buri
This high-rise resort is favoured for its sheltered location and yoga-centric Dhyãna Spa. Their wellness offering is everything you'd want from a Thai treatment, from singing bowls and local botanicals to hot stones that stimulate your chakras. A treatment worth trying is the Social Media Tension Release Massage, which, unusually, focuses on the muscles around the eyes. Afterwards, withdraw to Over the Moon, the resort's chic rooftop bar serving oyster platters alongside planetary cocktails – from a rose-and-pomegranate Mercury to a syrupy, apricot brandy Neptune.

"Pre Covid, Phuket was increasingly recognised a world-class charter destination and several of our best charter yachts were opting for this destination versus the Caribbean," commented Burgess Asia chairman Jean-Marc Poullet. "Now that the Covid restrictions have been fully removed, we expect this trend to amplify and several of our top charter yachts are considering repositioning to the region this winter."
Wanderlust is priced from $960,000 per week with Burgess.
Stats : 55.7m, Perini Navi , 2011, 12 guests, 11 crew Highlights : Specialises in dive and surf expeditions, a World Superyacht Award finalist, a 9,000nm+ cruising range
"Clients are looking for off the beaten track charters where they can be active, enjoy diving and explore more untouched places," explained IYC sales and charter consultant Sofia Penvern. "There is a particular appeal with South East Asia in this regard, where the offering is quite special and charterers can spend time on board that is both thrilling and relaxing."
"You go to Europe for culture and history, but you come to the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia for its diversity and raw beauty," added Galileo G captain Anthony Daebritz.
Galileo G is priced from €280,000 per week with IYC.

"Thailand is a phenomenal place to explore, and a yacht provides a unique vantage point to get away from the mass tourism that many people associate with the region. With an endless coastline and countless islands, there are stunning locations to drop your anchor in pretty much every direction," said Camper & Nicholsons charter broker Bobby Bigio. "Every year, we see a slow and steady increase in appetite for charters in Thailand and further afield as clients who have experienced the usual cruising grounds want to expand their horizons east."
Guillemot is priced from $125,000 per week with Camper & Nicholsons.
Stats : 39.4m, Heesen , 2001, 10 guests, 7 crew Highlights : Netted custom pool for protected swimming, air-conditioned gym and dive centre
"There’s definitely been an increased interest in yachting in Thailand. To be expected, as sailing allows visitors to access any beautiful, far-flung cove and corner they desire," said Matthew Gusman, broker at TWW Yachts. "New Zealand-born captain Gerry has called this part of the world home for the past decade, (his first-hand knowledge is second to none) so guests of Lady Azul get to experience the best less frequented and unspoilt islands such as Koh Hong and Ko Rok Nok in the Krabi region, which have been hugely successful on the last two charters."
Lady Azul is priced at $133,000 per week with TWW Yachts.

What Is Bareboat Charter?
Bareboat Sailing
We offer bareboat charter to those people who wish to skipper their own yacht with their friends and family as crew.
As bareboat charter does typically vary from 1 night, 4 nights, 1 week, 3 weeks or more. We use our experience to identify your ideal yacht in terms of size, cabins & price. We will give you a full briefing of your yacht & the areas that you can enjoy & explore whilst on charter.
Experience of Skipper
For bareboat yacht charter the skipper should have previous skippering experience aboard yachts of a similar size to that being chartered. He/She should have an RYA Day or Coastal Skipper qualification or an international equivalent such as the ICC qualification.
In addition, at least one other crew member should be a competent sailor, who ideally has sailed with you before. As with all our Yacht Charters , should you need any help, we are always readily available.
A bareboat charter is a type of yacht charter arrangement where the charterer rents the boat from the charter company without any crew or provisions included. The charterer is responsible for all aspects of operating the vessel, including navigation, maintenance, provisioning, and hiring a crew if they wish.
The charterer assumes full responsibility for the safety and management of the yacht during the charter period. This typically requires the charterer to have experience and knowledge in operating a boat, as well as possessing the necessary licenses and qualifications, depending on the jurisdiction and size of the yacht.
Bareboat charters are popular among experienced sailors or individuals who prefer to have complete control over their sailing experience. It allows for greater flexibility and freedom to explore various destinations and plan the itinerary according to their preferences.
It is a requirement that every skipper chartering a yacht must hold an approved skipper licence to charter in Thailand. Please bring your original certificates with you. If you have any concerns regarding the suitability of a particular yacht or cruising area do contact us to discuss your options.
Please note that if a skipper has to be provided aboard a yacht, due to either misrepresentation by the signatory on the booking form, or in the opinion of Yachting Thailand it is necessary to ensure the safety of the yacht and its crew, the cost of the skipper’s services will be at the client’s expense. We cannot accept responsibility for any loss suffered by you or a third party as a result of insurers failing to indemnify due to incorrect or misleading details being supplied on the booking form.
At the time of booking please ensure that you complete the Sailing Experience / Qualifications section on the booking form. We will require a scanned copy of the skippers licence.

Build your own unique trip!
Borrow A Boat is the leading Thailand catamaran charter website. Whether on a day trip or for a longer sailing holiday, you are guaranteed to find your perfect sailing vacation on the Andaman Sea or Gulf of Thailand.
At Borrow A Boat we're on a mission to make boating more accessible and to make it easier for you to get on the water. We believe boating should be available to everyone, and we can help the boating industry, boat owners, marinas, and everyone who wants to go boating by providing a 21st-century boating marketplace. Borrow A Boat is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboats across Europe to a sailing boat, motor yacht, catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean and Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.
A smaller alternative than a superyacht charter, catamarans are the fastest growing type of charter yacht at the moment and once you've sailed on one it's easy to see why. In terms of your ideal catamaran charter think of locations like Thailand, the Ionian Islands, BVI (British Virgin Islands), Croatian Adriatic, Ibiza, French riviera and Mallorca for your sailing adventure.
Types of Catamarans Available For Rent Or Charter In Thailand:
When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the catamaran yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.
Types of Catamarans Available:
Catamarans: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull sailing yacht. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the cabin as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.
Power Catamaran : These motor boat are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.
Catamaran Sailing Areas In Thailand
Whether for a day charter or for a longer luxury yacht sailing holiday, there are two broad areas in which you will can do a Thailand yacht charter - the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.
A Phuket yacht charter on the Andaman Sea is one of the more popular Thailand catamaran charter holidays. Out of one of the four marinas like Phuket Yacht Haven, either on a crewed yacht charter or on a bareboat charter you can explore the more famous Thai tourist spots like the Similan Islands and Surin Island off the west coast of the mainland where you can enjoy some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the world.
To the east of Phuket Island is Phang Nga Bay with its world famous limestone spire islands and Ao Nang beach resort in Krabi on the Malay Peninsula. To the south of Phuket Island is Phi Phi Island with its famous white sand beach, excellent coral reefs for scuba diving and unlimited partying.
When you think of the Gulf of Thailand you may only have heard of the backpackers' mecca of Koh Samui. While a famous national park with its sandy beaches, there's more to the Gulf of Thailand than Samui! For a start you cannot charter a yacht out of Samui but would likely be on a crewed yacht charter out of Koh Chang to the north. A bareboator skippered Koh Chang yacht charter is an opportunity to see a part of Thailand that is still very much off the beaten track and a chance to see, taste and feel the authentic Thailand. Though there are no direct flights to the island unlike Phuket (you will have to change planes at Bangkok) you will find a bit of Thailand that many westerners have yet to explore.
Crewed Catamaran Charter or Bareboat:
When it comes to a Thailand catamaran charter you typically have two choices - bareboat or crewed catamaran charter.
When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all catamaran searches to be with or without skipper depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your catamaran hire.
Skippered Charter: A skippered yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications beforehand. For a crewed catamaran you will pay a fixed fee for the crew and skipper as well as their food and a tip at the end.
When you get to a luxury yacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.
In some cases, skippers will also be the boat owner (typically day charter) which means they will know all the best-secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.
For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of charter boat.
Bareboat Catamaran Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat yacht charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the charter yacht while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats yourself.
Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Catamaran In Thailand
If you are on a crewed Thailand catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail - you can just turn up at the marina and go.
You do need a license if you are on a bareboat catamaran charter and in some countries a Day Skipper or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:
International Certificate of Competence : This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.
RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Thailand (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper (sail or motor endorsement) or Yachtmaster.
American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above
US Sailing : The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I consider when hiring a Catamaran?
The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.
Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Catamaran in Thailand?
You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.
What happens if my Catamaran breaks down?
If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base
What should I think of before I hire a Catamaran in Thailand?
You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.
What Qualifications Do I need to hire a Catamaran?
If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.
