  • By Yachting Staff
  • August 9, 2023

Sunseeker Acacia

The 131-foot Sunseeker Acacia has joined the Fraser charter fleet, with year-round availability in the Bahamas .

Acacia is a 2012 build that most recently was refitted in 2022. The yacht accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms that can be arranged for a group of friends or a multigenerational family.

Guest amenities on the sundeck include workout space, a hot tub, lounge areas and dining. For guests who prefer to have fun out on the water, Acacia carries what Fraser calls a “massive selection of toys,” including an inflatable beach-club platform and toy dock.

The lowest weekly base rate to charter Acacia is $140,000.

What is Acacia’s cruising speed? It’s 14 knots, with a top hop of 23 knots.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

A Look at the Various Types of Yachts

Yachts are a lifestyle of luxury and leisure that many individuals aspire to, as they can be used for relaxation and fun. There are numerous types of yachts to choose from depending on intended purpose, size, and budget. From the classic look of sailing yachts to the speed and power of motor yachts, each type has its own advantages and disadvantages.

  • Sailing yachts come in various sizes, shapes, and design aesthetics. Depending on the particular need of the owner, there are daysailers, offshore cruisers, racing yachts, and performance cruisers that can be considered. With advancements in technology, sailing yachts have become more and more efficient, allowing for longer voyages at greater speeds. The major drawbacks are that sailing yachts require more crew and must be able to handle choppy waters for extended periods of time.
  • Motor yachts offer more convenience and are often faster than sailing yachts. They are most commonly purchased for luxury cruises, as they often come with a variety of amenities, such as bars, hot tubs, and entertainment systems. Like sailing yachts, motor yachts come in various sizes and designs, ranging from smaller powerboats to full-size luxury vessels. The major downside to purchasing motor yachts is that they require more fuel which can be costly. Additionally, they do not stand up to choppy waters as well as sailing yachts.

When it comes to purchasing a yacht, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. It is important to research and consider the various types available to find the right fit. Both sailing and motor yachts are desirable options, depending on the individual's needs and budget. Taking the time to look into the various features of each kind of yacht can help buyers make the best decision for their particular needs.

Cruising the Seas Aboard a Yacht

Yachting is a luxurious way to explore the seas. A modern yacht is the perfect way to fuse the freedom of cruising the seas with the comfort and glamour of a luxury vessel in one. Although expensive, the enjoyment of traveling on a yacht is more than worth it for the lifestyle plus the waterside views that it gives.

Today, yachting has become more accessible than ever before. With a fraction of the cost of owning and maintaining a yacht, you can use a wide variety of luxurious services and amenities to suit your preferences. From top-of-the-line food to spectacular sightseeing and water sports activities, you can easily create the perfect yachting experience for yourself and your guests. Yachting also brings with it the unique added bonus of providing a more truly private and customizable experience, as compared to a cruise liner.

No matter what type of experience you are looking for, whether it's a romantic getaway or a family adventure, cruising through the seas aboard a yacht is a great way to make the most of it. The comfort of a home away from home and the exquisite luxury of the yacht will let you feel like royalty as you explore the beautiful sights of the oceans. Not only do you have the ability to view pristine seascapes, but you also have the opportunity to make new friends, as well as make your time aboard that much more enjoyable. So if you're ready to enjoy the adventures of the seas, look no further than a yacht charter. You won't be disappointed.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

fraser yachts youtube

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

fraser yachts youtube

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

fraser yachts youtube

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

fraser yachts youtube

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

fraser yachts youtube

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

fraser yachts youtube

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

fraser yachts youtube

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

fraser yachts youtube

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

fraser yachts youtube

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

fraser yachts youtube

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

Stealing the spotlight … Alec Guinness in The Ladykillers.

Kind hearts, ladykillers and whisky galore: Ealing comedies – ranked!

Classic heist caper The Lavender Hill Mob is getting a cinema rerelease. But which of these 40s and 50s film fancies are slyly subversive, and which have dated less well?

19. Another Shore (1948)

Anyone wanting a look at Dublin in the late 1940s might like this, but there’s not much else especially compelling about this weird Walter Mitty-ish comedy about a park loafer hoping to finance a one-way trip to the South Seas by helping rich people who have fallen over. Inspired by the anywhere-but-here mood of postwar privations, this is pretty charmless, and almost completely tone-deaf to the class/ethnic sensitivities of a crew of posh Brits rolling around the Irish capital. Not director Charles Crichton’s finest hour.

18. Meet Mr Lucifer (1953)

A not especially subtle anti-TV screed, structured like La Ronde with a television set passed from household to household sowing unexpected crises in its wake. Stanley Holloway, by then second to Alec Guinness as Ealing’s star performer, had the showy linking role of music-hall devil, but the whole struggles to transcend its theatrical (and pro-theatre) origins, adapted as it is from a play by Arnold Ridley (later to achieve immortality as Private Godfrey in Dad’s Army).

17. His Excellency (1952)

Another play adaptation that doesn’t quite overcome its stage roots, but it has an interesting slant on the tail-end of empire. A bluff union man (played by Eric Portman in professional Yorkshireman mode) is sent out by the Labour government to oversee a restive Mediterranean colony (a fictional cross between Cyprus and Gibraltar) and tries to get the local people on side by supporting a dockworkers strike. But its small-c conservative ending, in which the Labourite agrees to cooperate with the wily Colonial Office chappie already in place, really doesn’t get to the heart of why Britain was divesting itself of its overseas possessions in the first place.

Hue & Cry

16. Hue & Cry (1947)

Ealing’s first big comedy success has more than a whiff of the Children’s Film Foundation about it, with its scrappy gang of comic-book reading teens unmasking a gang of crooks after enlisting the cooperation of creepy author Alastair Sim. (Title of their favourite comic: The Trump.) It’s mainly remarkable now for the evidence of the pounding London took during the Blitz: the city’s war wounds were still fresh and raw.

15. A Run for Your Money (1949)

Ealing liked its crews to get out and about, and this one travels (briefly) to the fictional Welsh village of Hafoduwchbenceubwllymarchogcoch for a cheery comedy about brothers heading to London to collect a £200 prize and tickets for the big rugby match, and getting into various scrapes along the way. Although it deals in the broadest possible ethnic stereotypes, it’s entirely affectionate and a pretty amiable watch, as well as benefiting from Guinness showing up as an ineffectual nature correspondent assigned to escort the brothers around town.

14. The Magnet (1950)

Another excursion to the regions, this child-focused comedy which takes place largely in Liverpool’s seaside satellite New Brighton, is about an 11-year-old who tricks a little kid out of a giant magnet but then becomes guilt-ridden and gets rid of it, and thereby learns life lessons. With his drama-school vowels, child star James Fox doesn’t exactly sound like a local – in contrast, and to the film’s credit, to the gang of slum kids who hide him from the cops at one point – but even in shorts and cap he has a naturalness and screen presence that marked him out for bigger things.

Alec Guinness in Barnacle Bill.

13. Barnacle Bill (1957)

A curiously low-energy riff on the Passport to Pimlico idea of outflanking petty rules and regulations by a declaration of independence, in the last knockings of Ealing’s 50s comedy output. Guinness is a retired naval officer of almost zero career achievement who buys a pier and claims it’s a ship to evade the local council’s strictures. Even though he got to appear in his trademark multiple roles, Guinness clearly wasn’t interested in being there (he was doing the film as a favour to director Charles Frend) but he still glides through it like a Rolls-Royce, albeit one permanently in third gear.

12. Who Done It? (1956)

Gather round, kids; there was a time when Benny Hill represented cutting-edge comedy and this debut film appearance, with his marked resemblance to a young Bob Hope, is Exhibit A. The similarities stop there, though: festooned with sideways caps and soundtrack honks, this has Hill as a useless ice-rink sweeper who sets up as a private detective after getting fired; it’s not completely unamusing even if Hill is a mostly bland presence, stuffed into a regulation capers-and-chase storyline. It’s particularly implausible that he should inspire the googly-eyed adoration of a glowing Belinda Lee, on hand as strongwoman act, who has the hots for him.

11. Touch and Go (1955)

There’s quite a bit of zip to this comedy of discontent, with Jack Hawkins taking a break from the parade of military types he was famous for to play a paterfamilias furniture designer who, frustrated at work, decides on a whim to shift his entire family to Australia. Of course, one thing after another foils their plans, including his daughter falling for dashing John Fraser after he helps her retrieve the family’s escaped cat on Albert Bridge. Loses points for its bellicose enforcement of male entitlement, with a well-acted but near-unwatchable final scene in which Hawkins bellows “I take the decisions!” at his hapless wife, before changing his mind.

Harry Secombe in Davy.

10. Davy (1958)

Ealing’s final roll of the comedy dice until the modern era was a tonally odd but impressively mounted Harry Secombe vehicle which, like Meet Mr Lucifer, operates as a lament for traditional forms of entertainment. Secombe is the lead member of a family musical hall troupe who is tempted by the prospect of a more lucrative solo career. Secombe, a big name courtesy of the Goons, is great as a stage performer, but much less convincing when it comes to effectively portraying an actual human being. Not a surprise that a straight acting career never really took off.

9. The Love Lottery (1954)

A bit of an outlier in the Ealing comedy canon, in that it contains some proper Hollywood star power. David Niven is on raffish form as the matinee idol who allows his love life to become the subject of a fan competition; it’s a fun start, but the film overcomplicates things with a plot strand involving a gambling syndicate (headed by Herbert Lom) that muscles in on the action. The opening dream sequence, in which Niven is dismembered and decapitated by multiple Peggy Cumminses, is quite something, and why Cummins never became a bigger star is still a mystery.

8. The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953)

Ealing at its cosiest, protecting branch-line village life from the vandalisation of modernised central planning a decade before the first Beeching report massacred the railways. John Gregson is the local squire leading attempts to keep a little steam engine running after the village’s train service is cut, with the wartime spirit of initiative, spit-and-polish, and a bit of improvisation with the rules. In classic Ealing style, the unions and big business, supposedly natural enemies, are equally obstructive, but no one foresaw the commercial golden egg that restored railways would become.

Stanley Holloway in The Titfield Thunderbolt.

7. The Maggie (1954)

Another hymn to the virtues of the old-school “puffer”, though this time it’s a Clyde cargo boat rather than a steam loco. Directed by Alexander Mackendrick, leader of Ealing’s Scottish division, this has Alex Mackenzie (in his first ever film role, in his 60s) as the crafty skipper who weasels his way into a big-money delivery job for loudmouth American businessman Paul Douglas, even though his boat – the “Maggie” of the title – has been declared unsound. More than most Ealing comedies, this manages to capture authentic local flavour, with the actors allowed to use their natural accents; and in its confrontation between canny Scots and hapless outsiders, The Maggie is a clear influence on Local Hero.

6. Passport to Pimlico (1949)

Most Ealing films crystallise a yearning to throw off the sacrifices of the war years while retaining the home front spirit of solidarity, and this one really hit the nail on the head. The detonation of a wartime unexploded bomb reveals an underground treasure chamber (although anyone concerned with safe handling of explosives had better look away during this scene) and the subsequent creation of a Burgundian microstate in the middle of London. With rationing no longer in force, this new Burgundy is briefly a paradise, before being overrun with black marketeers and then blockaded by the British authorities. It doesn’t take all that long for Ealing’s preferred small-c conservatism to assert itself in this pointed be-careful-what-you-wish-for cautionary tale.

5. Whisky Galore! (1949)

Another response to the irritations of rationing, Mackendrick’s directing debut was perhaps more of a shortbread-biscuit-tin of a movie than The Maggie, but there’s no doubting its continuing appeal to the popular imagination. Based on a Compton Mackenzie novel, itself based on a real-life incident , this has a whisky-laden cargo boat going down off the fictional island of Todday in the Western Isles, and a portion of its bottles liberated by the islanders. A substantial hit in the US, this implanted the idea of wily Scots quietly running rings round the overbearing English – a theme that’s never stopped being popular.

Guinness in The Man in the White Suit.

4. The Man in the White Suit (1951)

Arguably the most progressive Ealing comedy, and one which benefits from Guinness’ straightforwardly charming performance. He plays idealistic research chemist Sidney Stratton, inventor of a superstrong artificial fibre, which earns him the enmity of his bosses and fellow workers, who find common cause after realising an always-perfect cloth would do them both in. Though by the end Guinness is in his underpants and out of a job (again), it’s not quite a return to the status quo; Stratton’s ingenuity is undaunted and, calling forth memories of the backroom boffins who won the war only a few years earlier, we see inspiration strike again as the credits roll.

3. The Lavender Hill Mob (1951)

The heist movie was in its infancy in the early 1950s and yet this brilliantly funny, almost perfect, example arrived even as the subgenre was getting up to speed. It’s led by another brilliant turn from Guinness as a purse-lipped, strait-laced inspector in charge of ferrying bullion to the bank who, in fact, is plotting to rip the lot off. Guinness is matched toe-to-toe by Stanley Holloway, on almost Zero Mostel-esque form as the artist whose foundry is key to the whole scheme. Every detail is beautifully observed, and there’s the benefit of exceptional down-the-bill casting: Sid James, Alfie Bass and, in one of her first screen appearances, a radiant Audrey Hepburn.

2. The Ladykillers (1955)

You can hardly get a cigarette paper between this and The Lavender Hill Mob; The Ladykillers gets the nod because of the basic wackiness of its setup, grafting an elderly boarding-house-lady stock character (Katie Johnson) on to a nicely funny heist comedy. Guinness is brilliant yet again as the crooks’ leader, in a performance modelled on Alistair Sim; the rest of the gang, including Peter Sellers and Lom, are great, too. But the final section, where each of the villains get theirs in turn, and sweet little Mrs Wilberforce ends up with a giant pile of cash, is just terrific. Director Mackendrick would go on to arguably bigger things with Sweet Smell of Success and A High Wind in Jamaica, but this is near-perfect. Its lightning-in-a-bottle brilliance was only reinforced by the Coen brothers’ dreadful remake.

1. Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949)

Guinness in Kind Hearts and Coronets.

There’s no real contest: this is the Ealing comedy’s masterpiece, and one of the greatest British films of any kind. Released in the same year as Passport to Pimlico and Whisky Galore!, it was part of an amazing new wave of comedy, but at the same time towered over it. It offered a tour de force for Guinness, playing all eight members of the noble D’Ascoyne family who are made to die, one way or the other, through the course of the film. Amazingly, though, he’s only the supporting turn: the actual star is Dennis Price, as the draper’s assistant who works his way through the D’Ascoynes to ensure he inherits the dukedom. What stands out now is the nakedly cynical tone – utterly unlike the rest of British cinema, previous Ealing comedies included – which successfully got its audience to root for a cold-hearted, nakedly ambitious serial killer who kept both his trophy wife (Valerie Hobson) and adolescent crush (Joan Greenwood) in play. It’s also a brutal counterpunch to the countless films that have idolised the British upper classes; here is a film that shows them exhausted, distracted and utterly ineffectual, a message that many in the postwar era were ready to hear.

What Happened to Cat Baugh on Below Deck Season 11?

Find out why the stew decided to leave St. David early.

fraser yachts youtube

Season 11, Episode 7 of  Below Deck   saw the departures of two St. David crew members (SPOILER): Jared Woodin and Cat Baugh .

How to Watch

Watch  Below Deck on Bravo Mondays at 9/8c and next day on  Peacock . Catch up on the Bravo App .

While Captain Kerry Titheradge fired Jared for not knowing his distances, for being ill-equipped to be a Bosun on a mega-yacht, and for his behavior during crew nights out, Cat chose to leave the boat on her own.

The stew took an emotional phone call from a friend shortly before she decided to quit, and she opened up about leaving the boat in an interview on the episode.

After the episode aired on March 18, Cat's former boss, Kerry, shared an update on how she's doing today.

What was Cat Baugh’s experience on Below Deck ?

During the first crew night out, Cat opened up to chief stew Fraser Olender about how she didn't feel like she was fitting in with the rest of the yachties. Plus, her conflict with fellow stew Barbara "Barbie" Pascual , also made things difficult for Cat.

On Season 11, Episode 7, Cat received a phone call from her friend, Megan.

"I'm sorry, I know you can't talk, but she's not answering, and no one else is awake right now," Cat's friend said on the phone. "Do you have, like, a couple seconds? I'm freaking the f-ck out."

Cat didn't share much further context for the phone call, but it did encourage her to make the decision to head back home.

"So, I got a call from my friend, Megan," Cat explained in an interview on the episode. "This is a situation I really can't talk about, but my friends are my family, so it feels really sh-tty not being able to be there for her."

Why did Cat Baugh leave Below Deck ?

After Cat hung up the phone, she had an emotional conversation with Fraser about her place on the boat. He chatted with Captain Kerry about how he thought it would be best for Cat to leave. Kerry later spoke to Cat, and he encouraged her to take time to focus on her mental health.

"My number one job is to take care of my crew and their health," Kerry said in an interview. "I'm well aware of mental health. She's got to go, now."

Just a short while later, Cat packed up her belongings, and she left the St. David crew for good.

"I wish I could have stayed. But, the thing is, there's no way I could have," Cat said in her final interview of the season. "This is too much. I need to be with the people [who] need me, and also, on this boat, I'm at a breaking point. I need to protect my mental health. It's like my support system is at home, not here."

Cat Baugh Hugs Captain Kerry as she leaves the yacht

Captain Kerry Titheradge shares an update on how Cat Baugh is doing today

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Kerry opened up about how Cat was "really struggling" prior to her departure.

"I could just see it in her face. I didn't need to know what was going on. It didn't matter what it was. To her, it was catastrophic," he said. "And that's something else I've learned on my journey is that it's real to that person who's going through it. It doesn't matter if it doesn't affect you or how insignificant it may seem. It's real to them..."

Captain Kerry Titheradge Just Promoted This Crew Member to Bosun

Kerry has been in touch with Cat recently as well.

"She's having a hard time seeing herself where she's at. But she said she's in a pretty good headspace. And I've shown her support — I say, look, if you need someone to talk to, I'm always here," the captain concluded.
