MarineTraffic is a ship-tracking and maritime information service that was founded by Dimitris Lekkas in 2007. It is widely recognised as the world’s most comprehensive maritime database and the service is able to boast more than six million unique monthly users , as well as more than one million registered account holders. Essentially, the service was set up by Lekkas because he had an existing interest in computers and ship spotting and had become interested in the practical uses of AIS vessel tracking technology. Little did he know, he was about to create one of the most important transport databases in the world . The MarineTraffic service is available to use for free , although a paid version also exists, adding more advanced features. MarineTraffic makes use of AIS vessel tracking technology to record 800 million vessel locations each month, while its database also includes information on ships, such as when and where they were built.

How Does MarineTraffic Work?

The MarineTraffic service makes use of AIS tracking technology to provide information about the identification, course, speed and current location of vessels. From there, locations can be overlaid onto Google Maps , and, as a result, users can use the service to track the movements of ships and other vessels in real-time.

Additionally, some information surrounding ship locations is self-reported by those aboard. This information is then used to provide a more accurate and up-to-date live map of vessel locations.

Aside from tracking vessel positions, MarineTraffic also provides background information on vessels, such as where they were built, when they were built, their IMO (International Maritime Organisation) number, how much they weigh and even photographs of them. Much of this information is submitted voluntarily by the community members.

What is AIS Technology?

AIS stands for ‘ automatic identification system ‘ and refers to a tracking system that is used on ships and VesselFinder . Since 2004, it has been compulsory for all passenger ships of any size, and all international voyaging ships with a gross tonnage of 300 or more, to be fitted with an AIS transponder, which is able to transmit and receive AIS data.

Voge Master vessel in full drive on the ocean - MMSI no. 256089000

The AIS transponder transmits GPS information , as well as a host of additional data, which is then received by AIS receiving stations. The MarineTraffic service makes use of more than 3,000 of these stations , positioned all around the world, allowing the service to track positions, identify vessels, plot courses and even monitor speed.

In many ways, the MarineTraffic AIS technology can be considered similar to the flight radar technology used by services like Flightradar24 , in order to track aircraft. In that particular case, the AIS technology is replaced by ADS-B technology, which works in a similar way and is again assisted by volunteers, with information being picked up by ADS-B receivers or receiving stations instead of AIS receivers.

Other information on the site

While the information on the site largely revolves around picking up these AIS signals for tracking purposes, background information about the vessels, photographs of ships and an abundance of other information is also added and moderated by volunteers, who make up the core of the MarineTraffic community.

Meanwhile, in addition to the automatic location tracking that is provided through the use of AIS technology, vessel positions are also often self-reported to MarineTraffic. This can help to make tracking even more accurate and is stored as historical data within the database . It can subsequently be referred to for statistical analysis, emergency response purposes, accident investigation, and even to assess the effects of weather on speed.

Who Uses MarineTraffic?

An online ship tracking service may seem like the sort of platform that would only appeal to the most dedicated ship spotters , and it may not surprise you to learn that the site’s founder, Dimitris Lekkas, places himself within this category. However, in reality, the service has a much wider audience than that.

Real-time Ship Tracking Map

In fact, in the years since its initial launch, MarineTraffic has grown into an important tool for both business and research purposes , while the platform is also used by governments, trade organisations and emergency services. Of course, it remains a valuable tool for maritime professionals and hobbyists as well .

The core user group includes maritime professionals, ship spotters and other hobbyists . Many of those within this group subscribe to the paid version of the service and dedicate their free time to voluntarily help the community, upload photographs and moderate content uploaded to the site.

Business and Trade

Another key use for the MarineTraffic service is related to business and trade. Its primary use here is to track the progress of cargo being shipped overseas. Furthermore, the website includes its own business directory, helping to put buyers and suppliers in contact with one another.

MarineTraffic also enjoys popularity with maritime researchers and those interested in AIS technology. Indeed, the service has set up the MarineTraffic Research Network, which is designed to assist academic institutions, research foundations and individual maritime researchers . Interested parties can even apply for special academic accounts.

Security and Emergency Services

One of the more surprising ways in which MarineTraffic is used is as a tool to assist emergency services with situational awareness and accident investigation . Moreover, the platform has also been used by some national governments for security purposes because it allows them to monitor activity in and around their coastal areas.

Other Users

Aside from the groups mentioned, MarineTraffic has also grown into an important resource for journalists and media organisations , who have used it to inform reports on ISIS and the migrant crisis. In addition, there are also casual users who may utilise MarineTraffic to track friends or family members aboard a ship or vessel.

How Do You Use MarineTraffic?

If all of this seems complicated and overly technical so far, the good news is that the actual MarineTraffic service itself is very easy to use , even for those with no technical knowledge of AIS technology whatsoever. Additionally, the core features can be accessed from a range of different platforms . The main website is, in itself, the service’s web platform and from there, users will be able to search for, identify and track vessels. However, in addition to this, two separate web apps exist. The first of these integrates with the services seen on the web platform, while the other is designed for boaters and hobbyists.

Web Platform

The main MarineTraffic web platform features a Live Map showing the positions of vessels. Users can click and drag the map to move around the globe, highlight vessels on the map to find out more information, or use the ‘+’ an ‘-‘ symbols to zoom in or out, while the left-hand side of the screen has a range of more advanced options.

Interactive MarineTraffic Map: Live Vessel Tracking, Advanced Features & User Options

At the top, the magnifying glass symbol opens up the search function, allowing users to search for either a vessel or sea port , or search for a specific map location. Meanwhile, the filter symbol allows users to filter the vessels displayed on the map based on ship type, capacity, current status and more.

Finally, the symbol showing three boats is the ‘My Fleets’ option. By accessing this menu, users have the option to create a fleet and add ships to it, making it easier to track multiple vessels at the same time.

A basic MarineTraffic account is free and can be used for an indefinite period. However, MarineTraffic is categorised as a ‘freemium’ service because a paid premium account opens up a range of extra features. Among these are the ability to create larger fleets, use custom fleet icons, access wind forecasts and view a 30-day voyage history.

Mobile Apps

Aside from the main web platform, the MarineTraffic service also has two separate mobile apps , which are available for Android and iOS devices. The first of these, MarineTraffic Ship Positions is similar to the web platform, but is more mobile-friendly than using the website on a mobile browser.

All account holders can make use of the app, including those with a basic free account, those with a paid premium account, or those with a special research or academic account, but the app itself is not free, and a small fee is required to download it. The features available within the app will depend on the account type held by the user.

Further to the main MarineTraffic mobile app the platform also has a separate mobile app, known as MarineTraffic OnCourse . This app is intended for those interested in sailing or yachting or those who are in charge of larger vessels, and provides a more advanced range of features. For example, the app allows boaters to self-report their location from within the app and easily upload photos and other information about their vessel.

VESSEL FINDER – THE LIVE VESSEL TRACKING APP

Vessel finder shows various types of vessels as shown on a live map. Isn’t it helpful? You can now maximize the use of this ship locator in-conjunction with Ship-Tracking.net. You can find an online free map inclusive of data coming from the central database with the use of an AIS (Automatic Identification System) technology. Don’t worry about the technicalities of vesselfinder because it’s easy to navigate. We keep in mind the ease of access for the users for them to get necessary information without hassle. Concerning marine traffic, it contains much-integrated features and layers. Specifically, at vessel finder, you won’t be able to find information concerning weather conditions like winds overlay. Some of its limitations are that VesselFinder service has fewer AIS receivers and do not cover the southern Adriatic area. On the contrary, it is the best tracker for boats often displaying small vessels in comparison to what Marine Traffic can offer.

VesselFinder1

Who Uses Vessel Finder?

Numerous people are being interested in ship AIS service like vesselfinder. Who wouldn’t? Apart from the wide variety of information that can be accessed on it, it is also user-friendly. In just a click, essential information that you need can come as quick and as convenient as possible.

If we’re looking at vessel finder in the most basic level, it is regularly used by the ship spotters, hobbyist, and of course, crew members’ families. These are the people who want to monitor and follow the voyage of their loved one. They want to be updated with information about it. It makes them feel at ease at some point.

Most obviously, the experts of the shipping industry make use of vessel finder as they monitor the global fleet together with their ships as it is also playing an important role relating to business prospects identification.

VesselFinder2

Vessel Positions on VesselFinder

It provides the up-to-date AIS position and other data concerning any vessels’ voyage as being reported by Terrestrial AIS stations or Satellites.

What’s good about this vessel finder’s feature is that there’s no limit when you request. The results may address a particular ship or several ships, depending on your preference. Its response is beneficial as it shows you the latest AIS position data which contains the voyage and the master data, precisely. The format will go out in XML or JSON format. To give you an idea, JSON files are much easier to understand since its human-readable than XML as it only supports text and number data type. As per the XML, it contains various data types like text, numbers, images, charts, and even graphs, which is much technical.

This service grants access to three different datasets, depending on the customer’s needs:

Vessel finder allows access to the user depending on their needs. Users can find AIS dataset which contains coordinates, course, speed, heading, current draught, destination, ETA, name, call sign, IMO, MMSI, AIS type, and even dimensions. Another type is the voyage dataset where you can find origin port name and LOCODE, country, and time of departure. Lastly, the master dataset of vesselfinder contains the detailed type of data about the ship, its flag, year of build, builder, ownership, capacity, as well as dimensions.

VesselFinder3

Fleet Positions on VesselFinder

It contains data concerning a fixed list of vessels’ AIS position and voyage. The VesselsList API service allows users to access data of a predefined list of the ship that can be shown in JSON or XML format. Rest assured that the data being received, gathered, and processed has a global coverage since it makes use of the Terrestrial AIS stations (T-AIS) or Satellites (S-AIS).

In comparison to the vessel positions, it also grants access to users in three levels, namely, AIS dataset, voyage dataset, and master dataset. It allows the user to receive a regular update regarding the position of a vessel as fast as every 1 minute. It is not just limited to one; you can monitor your fleet of 20 vessels every minute. It is also helpful in tracking the world trade flow of LNG (Liquefied natural gas) thus; it needs to have updated information for the LNG tanker ships’ and it can be updated every 6 hours. Don’t worry, each API response will automatically provide you the data that you need as being reported by T-AIS or S-AIS network.

Vessel in Custom Area

Another feature of vesselfinder is this LiveData API service which enables the user to have access about the data of vessels in a specific area or port as the ship position information is being gathered as well by the Terrestrial AIS stations or Satellites. So, its coverage is global. It also provides data in JSON or XML format; you can choose whichever is much easier for you to understand. It also gives data depending on where the needs of a certain customer will fall as being compared with the previous service, namely, AIS dataset, Voyage dataset, and Master dataset.

VesselFinder4

Port Calss API

LiveData API service allows the user to obtain real-time position data concerning all vessels that can be found in a specific port or area. Data given is available in JSON or XML format, you can choose whichever is easier for you to understand. It also has three different datasets, namely AIS dataset, Voyage dataset, and Master dataset.

If what’s beneficial for you is monitoring all of the vessels’ activity in a certain area, you can make use of this feature that can be employ at vesselfinder as it allows you to get the latest updates about the position of all the vessels in your assigned area of interest. It can also be a tool that can help you optimize port operations.

Expected Arrivals on Vessel Finder

ExpectedArrivals API service contains information about vessels’ expected time of arrival (ETA) in a pre-defined port or area as being received, monitored, and processed by the AIS. Your query has no limits and could apply to various ports as specified by its LOCODE or coding scheme. It also has three different datasets namely, AIS dataset, Voyage dataset, and Master dataset, whichever meets your needs as discussed previously.

If you need to find the ETA of a certain ship arriving in the following 10 days, then you can have the details of it by using this as the API response with around 40 ships that are expected to arrive on your pre-defined locations.

Vessel Particular information

MasterData API service provides detailed ship information, technical specifications, manager and owner contacts for any ship with an IMO number. Each query to the API could apply for a different ship or a fleet of ships specified by IMO number and there are no limits on the number of queried ships or the interval of queries.

If you need a much extensive and technical dataset, including its capacity, ownership, and other information about a vessel, you can make use of MasterData API service as being introduced at vesselfinder. To be specific on the data, it contains much-detailed ship information, namely, IMO number, ship name, flag, detailed ship type, year of built, builder company, owner’s name, manager’s name, length, draught, gross tonnage, net tonnage, deadweight, TEU capacity and even crude capacity.

Frequently Asked Question

On June 28, 2011 we went live with our new version of the map, this has been in development since 2008 and incorporates many new features that were requested. We are still making a few updates that should be complete in late July.

We are updating this documentation to reflect the changes, please check back for updates.

If you would like to use the old map please visit http://ais.boatnerd.com/v1

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a radio-based system used by ships and vessel traffic services to track the location of ships. Its primary purpose is collision avoidance. AIS uses digital radio signals transmitted over VHF maritime channels 87B (161.975 MHz) and 88B (162.025 MHz) to broadcast information about a ship including its name, position, speed, course, dimensions, destination, and status. The use of AIS is mandated for international ships over 300 gross tons under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). US and Canadian laws require its eventual use on the Great Lakes for ships over a certain tonnage. Some vessels, such as ferries operating on a constant route, are exempted.

Anyone with a marine radio that can monitor channels 87B or 88B can pick up AIS transmissions. However they are digital signals that must be decoded for a human to understand them. Inexpensive software packages are available to do this decoding, as well as more advanced navigation devices. While AIS can provide a simple text output, it is typically combined with some sort of electronic mapping or charting program. This page uses base maps provided by Google Maps with data pulled from a custom database. As radio signals, AIS transmissions have a limited range. This site extends the coverage range by linking multiple radio receivers through the Internet and combining all received AIS information onto one map.

The data shown on these maps is a few minutes up to an hour old depending on the station and delay in updates. AIS requires speed, position and course information to be broadcast every 2 to 10 seconds while underway and every 3 minutes while docked. Other information, such as ship size and destination, is to be broadcast every 6 minutes. This site itself refreshes every 10 minutes, so information could be perhaps 15 minutes or older at times.

Each ship is shown by an icon. The pointed end of the icon shows the rough direction of travel. There is a "tail" behind the ship showing its course over the past 10 minutes. The ships name is shown next to the icon.

By double clicking on the icon (not on the name box), a supplementary box shows up listing the: ship name, MMSI, ship type, latitude and longitude, speed, course, heading dimensions and status. Note that all this information is supplied by the vessel or personnel on board. We cannot correct spelling errors or incorrect data coming from a ship's transmitter.

  • MMSI is the ships Maritime Mobile Service Identity, a nine digit unique identifier.
  • Latitude and Longitude are shown in decimal degrees.
  • Speed is over ground speed in knots
  • Course is the actual direction being traveled at the last reporting time.
  • Heading is the intended direction of travel.

If you would like to host a receiver please e-mail , all that is needed is a location near the water with an always -on Internet connection (like cable or DSL) where we can place an antenna and small receiver box. There is no cost for the equipment that we will maintain, the box uses minimal bandwidth and does not open any security holes. If you are using an AIS plotting software you can upload directly to our database via TCP/IP or UDP/IP upload, please e-mail for instructions.

No. Vessels under a certain size do not have to have AIS transmitters. Not all ferries who travel a constant route, regardless of size carry a transmitter.

Vessels that are laid up or are inactive do not always transmit an AIS signal. In addition, AIS transmissions, like all radio signals, have a variable range depending on transmission power and atmospheric condition. Finally, the current coverage is limited due to the current number of active receivers. Great Lakes & Seaway Shipping Online's volunteer staff is working diligently to provide the best coverage possible within the constraints of its limited non-profit budget.

The Map Tiles used as a base map for this page do not show water depths, aids to navigation, or any of the other features that set navigation charts apart from maps. While it should be obvious, it must be stated: Do not use these maps for navigation purposes. Not only are they not charts, they are not always completely up to date maps or images and will show land where there is actual a channel. For the most accurate view change the map type to satellite. We are working on a version that will display nautical charts.

When viewing the satellite or map view and a small scale (zoomed out), the icon or name label of one ship will often block the view of another icon or name label. Simply zoom in on that location using the zoom slider and position keys on the left side of the screen. At larger scales the labels won't overlap unless the ships are right next to each other. If that is the case, double click on the ship icons to get more detail, including the ships name.

Dimensions are entered by the vessel in meters, our system converts these to feet. If the dimensions were not entered correctly by the vessel it will not convert correctly.

Vessel type (freighter, tug, passenger, etc.) are enter by the vessel when they configure the AIS system, if they entered the wrong information it will dispaly incorrectly. We are updating the system so we can manually define the type for better sorting.

When using either the satellite or map view at a large scale (zoomed in), the ship icon will appear to be on land. The maps, the satellite photos have a certain range or degree of accuracy. The accuracy of a graphical AIS display can only be as good as the combined accuracy of its mapping and equipment components. So docked ships sometimes appear to be on dry land next to the dock instead of in the water. If a ship shows up miles from the nearest lake, it is likely a problem with its AIS transmitter or the electronic navigation system it might be linked to.

When using the satellite view, photos of actual ships appear in certain locations. These are ships that were there when the photo was taken, which may have been several years ago. Do not confuse these photographed ships with the AIS location icons.

Great Lakes & Seaway Shipping Online, the non-profit support organization for the Boatnerd website, has committed a substantial portion of its operating budget to develop this online system. The vast majority of the labor involved was provided by volunteers, but there are substantial equipment and operating costs. Please consider purchasing raffle tickets as a way to support this free service or hosting a receiver. http://www.boatnerd.com/trips/bn/

if you are a seafarer working on ships or in the offshore industry,  you would continuously prowl, looking for better companies, salary, and working conditions (Nothing wrong, a common practice). Well, those might also be the reasons to look for a new job in every field, but for a mariner, they contribute a little “extra” towards deciding a new maritime job opportunity. (Ask a mariner and you would know the answer!)

Bigger ship, better views: 3 takeaways from Princess Cruises' newest vessel

yacht location app

I was rushing to make my dinner reservation on Princess Cruises’ new ship. But when I arrived at the restaurant, the view made me stop.

From the windows at the sushi eatery Makoto Ocean – part of a sphere-shaped structure near the middle of the vessel – I saw the sun sinking below the horizon, a reddish-orange dot on the Mediterranean Sea. The Sun Princess facilitates scenes like that by design.

“We wanted to make sure that within how we designed the (venues) and placed the furniture, we gave maximum opportunity for our guests to be able to celebrate those outward views,” Denise Saviss, Princess’ vice president of entertainment experience, told USA TODAY. “It is really, really unique to have so much glass on the ship.”

That was one of several striking features during a recent sailing (the ship is now cruising the Mediterranean before it moves to the Caribbean in October). Here are three takeaways from the first in the line’s aptly named Sphere Class.

1. The design showcases views at sea and in port

Makoto isn’t the only venue that offers that kind of view.

Other spaces inside the Sphere – which also houses lobby-slash-entertainment venue The Piazza – feature similarly sweeping vistas across decks 7, 8 and 9. I watched the light sparkle on the water while I sipped coffee one morning at International Café, and patrons dining at Alfredo’s Pizzeria can take in the scenery during their meal from many seats.

That’s also true elsewhere on the ship. At Horizons Dining Room, floor-to-ceiling windows face the ship’s wake. At the other end of the vessel, the Dome, a geodesic structure that Princess has said was inspired by the hills of Santorini, is like a massive solarium.

The space – which will also host shows including acrobatics – has multiple tiers of loungers, an indoor-outdoor pool and the Cascade Bar (which comes in handy for cooling off, as it felt a bit muggy in the Dome at one point on a sunny sea day).

The overall effect helped to bring the outside in.

2. The ship is bigger but still intimate

Sun Princess is the largest ship in the Princess fleet, and the 21-deck vessel can accommodate 4,300 guests. But that doesn’t mean everything is huge.

Given the scale of the offerings, a number of spaces on board feel notably intimate. One night, I walked to Good Spirits at Sea, a cocktail bar crafted in partnership with mixologist Rob Floyd that also hosts classes, and thought I was lost before stumbling upon it tucked around a corner on Deck 7. Inside, the 40-person venue offered a laid-back alternative to other more boisterous nightlife options.

On Deck 9, the ship’s buffet-like venue, The Eatery, gives way to narrower hallways toward the aft with backlit wood paneling and benches. At the end, they open back up to reveal specialty restaurants The Catch by Rudi and The Butcher’s Block by Dario (from Princess’ head of culinary arts, Rudi Sodamin, and in partnership with famed butcher Dario Cecchini, respectively).

Even the multi-configuration Princess Arena felt cozier than its near-1,000-guest capacity would suggest. I sat in the second-to-last row of my section for a performance by the vocal group ODY·C and was still close enough to see clearly.

3. The line leans into family-friendly activities

Part of Sun Princess’ expanded footprint has been used to broaden the line’s family offerings.

Park19, a new space on the ship’s top decks, features a variety of activities in an open-air setting. Saviss said the line worked to balance the interests of core customers and a growing family market “and make sure we're prioritizing spaces that everybody can enjoy.”

“There are some attractions that I think naturally, at first blush, people would say, ‘Oh, it's just for kids,’ but actually, the space is really comprehensive,” she said. “Our attractions are available for many different levels of ability and mobility.”

Those include Coastal Climb, an obstacle course that culminates in 360-degree views from The Lookout observation deck (the highest point accessible to guests on the ship, also reachable via elevator) and The Net ropes course.

On Sea Breeze, billed as the first Rollglider on a cruise ship, passengers will glide along the outer edges of the ship on an electric track (the ride will also be ADA-accessible, though Saviss said some mobility is required for maneuvering into the seat).

It’s as close as the ship gets to an amusement park (Princess’ version). “We're not running the rat race, if you will, of like, who can do it bigger, better,” Saviss said. “If you want to just have a really incredible bird's-eye view of Sun Princess, and in and around where the ship is sailing, you can do that. But there is an option to push a little lever while you're riding it and dial up the speed a bit faster, and then it does become a bit more thrilling.”

The ride was not yet available when I was on board, as the line moved through a testing, certification and training process, but is expected to open on April 27. Sun Princess’ original launch was delayed with the cruise line citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard, which pushed back the opening of some onboard amenities.

When is the best time to take a cruise?: We broke it down by region.

There is also a hammock area to chill when guests need a break, a recreational court that can host activities from pingpong to morning meditation, a jogging track and more. Elsewhere on board, guests will find the Firefly Park kids club and hangout spaces Neon Grove and The Underground for tweens and teens, respectively.

Ratings and Reviews

The free version is not too bad, but not great. Shows outdated ship position info. For example, I was tracking container ship CMA CGM Saigon. This app had ship position 13 days old. Marine traffic had AIS position 2 minutes old. Not worth $10 to me for more accurate ship position. I was looking to see if i could find something better than Marine Traffic, guess there isn't one.

Fantastic App!!

I was recently in Savannah & LOVED watching the gigantic container ships/cargo ships/tankers going by River St. & I kept asking everyone I’d meet there asking them how do you know when they’re going to pass by & a worker at the visitor center finally told me about this app & I downloaded it right away & haven’t missed a vessel yet!! It is the answer! It is perfect. You can zoom out to Tybee & beyond to see specifically what is coming & going. You won’t be disappointed. And it’s free. Thank you so much, VesselFinder Lite!

Happy with update

The new update is great. Important info is easier to access. Also seems to use less memory. I was beginning to look at other apps, but not anymore. Thank you.

What time is SpaceX's 3rd Starship launch test on today?

SpaceX is targeting a launch at 9:25 a.m. EDT on March 14.

  • What time is the launch?
  • How to watch the launch
  • How long is the flight?
  • What if Starship doesn't launch?

Update for 9:58 a.m. ET: SpaceX successfully launched Starship on its third integrated test flight. Read our full coverage here .

SpaceX is hoping to launch its first Starship test of 2024 as early as Thursday (March 14) in what it hopes will be a historic orbital flight of the world's biggest rocket, and if you need to know when to watch it online, you're in the right place.

SpaceX is targeting March 14 for the launch from its Starbase facility near Boca Chica Beach in South Texas. The announced on X that Starship has a 110-minute window on Thursday, with liftoff targeted for 9:25 a.m. EDT (1325 GMT) , about 30 minutes in.

The company will webcast the launch attempt, beginning at 8:52 a.m. EDT (1252 GMT) . You can watch the livestream here at Space.com, courtesy of SpaceX. There is a 70% chance of good weather at launch time, SpaceX has said.

SpaceX's Starship vehicle and its Super Heavy booster are the world's tallest and most powerful rocket. When stacked together, they stand 400 feet tall (122 meters), with the first stage powered by 33 Raptor engines, while the Starship upper stage carries six Raptors.

SpaceX has designed the Starship launch system to be fully reusable and hopes to use it for deep-space exploration, heavy-lift launches and space tourism. The company has already sold two private trips around the moon on Starship, with NASA picking Starship to land its Artemis 3 astronauts on the moon by 2026. But first, SpaceX has to prove its Starship can reach orbit, let alone the moon, and has failed to do so in two previous attempts in April and November of 2023. Here's what we know about Flight 3, SpaceX's third Starship test launch.

If you can't see SpaceX's Starship in person, you can score a model of your own. Standing at 13.77 inches (35 cm), this is a 1:375 ratio of SpaceX's Starship as a desktop model. The materials here are alloy steel and it weighs just 225g.

Note: Stock is low so you'll have to act quickly to get this.

Today, SpaceX is targeting March 14 at 9:25 a.m. EDT (8:25 a.m. CDT/1325 GMT) for its third Starship test flight. That's about 30 minutes into a 110-minute launch window that opens at 8 a.m. EDT. The company will air a livestream of the liftoff, beginning at 8:52 a.m. EDT (1252 GMT ) on March 14 .

SpaceX's first Starship test flight launched on April 20, 2023 but never reached space. It was intentionally destroyed after its two stages failed to separate. A second test flight on Nov. 18 did manage to reach space, but not its target altitude. The Super Heavy booster separated successfully from the Starship upper stage, but both vehicles eventually were destroyed shortly after stage separation.

"Each of these flight tests continue to be just that: a test," SpaceX wrote in a Flight 3 mission description . "They aren't occurring in a lab or on a test stand, but are putting flight hardware in a flight environment to maximize learning."

Can I watch the 3rd SpaceX Starship launch?

Yes, you can watch SpaceX's third Starship launch online , and you'll likely have a few options by which to do so.

SpaceX will provide a livestream of the Starship launch on its @SpaceX account on X (formerly Twitter), starting 30 minutes before liftoff — that is, at 8:52 a.m. EDT (1252 GMT).

But, and this is very important, SpaceX's plans could change .

"As is the case with all developmental testing, the schedule is dynamic and likely to change, so be sure to stay tuned to our X account for updates," the company wrote in a mission overview.

SpaceX's livestream of the Starship Flight 3 launch will also be carried by Space.com on YouTube and will be embedded at the top of this page.

You can also find several independent livestreams of SpaceX's Starship launch that should include live commentary and views.

One site we like to follow is NASASpaceflight.com , which offers regular daily livestreams of Starship testing activities at the Starbase facility. The site will have extensive YouTube livestream coverage , likely beginning in the hours before SpaceX's own webcast. Another option is Everyday Astronaut , which provides live Starship launch coverage and commentary as well.

If you happen to be in the Boca Chica, Texas area and are hoping to view the launch in person, you have several options.

There is no official SpaceX viewing site, but you can pick from several public beach areas from which you can see the launch. The nearby South Padre Island offers clear views of the rocket from the shoreline around Cameron County Amphitheater and Isla Blanca Park. Similar viewing areas can be found around the nearby shore of Port Isabel and the surrounding areas.

I actually watched Starship Flight 1 launch in April 2023 from the South Padre Island shore near Cameron County Amphitheater, and it does offer unobstructed views, with crowds lining the beach and on boats in the harbor. However, you will want to bring a folding beach chair, water and sunscreen. (There are bathrooms on site.)

Wherever you opt to watch the launch from, plan to arrive very early as traffic can cause lengthy delays reaching observing sites.

How long is SpaceX's 3rd Starship flight?

The first two Starship test flights were designed to last 90 minutes, with the Starship vehicle reaching orbital speeds (if not actually entering orbit) and then returning to Earth with a reentry and splashdown off the coast of Hawaii.

Things may happen more quickly on Flight 3. SpaceX's mission description says that Starship's upper stage will splash down about 65 minutes after liftoff, if all goes according to plan.

There will be other differences as well.

"The third flight test aims to build on what we’ve learned from previous flights while attempting a number of ambitious objectives , including the successful ascent burn of both stages, opening and closing Starship's payload door, a propellant transfer demonstration during the upper stage's coast phase, the first ever re-light of a Raptor engine while in space, and a controlled reentry of Starship," SpaceX wrote in its mission description. "It will also fly a new trajectory, with Starship targeted to splash down in the Indian Ocean. This new flight path enables us to attempt new techniques like in-space engine burns while maximizing public safety."

Related: SpaceX to push the envelope on 3rd Starship launch

SpaceX's first Starship flight aimed to reach an altitude of 146 miles (234 kilometers) while traversing a flight path that aimed to splash down in the Pacific Ocean about 140 miles (225 km) from the coast of Oahu, Hawaii. The second flight path was largely the same.

While Starship aims for a different splashdown zone on Flight 3, the Super Heavy booster is still expected to make a soft landing and splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico, miles offshore from Boca Chica Beach.

If SpaceX is unable to launch on March 14, the company will likely make sure it has at least one or two backup days handy.

Officials with Cameron County, the Texas county that is home to SpaceX's Starbase facility, have released a beach closure advisory that suggests road closures around Starbase through March 16, hinting at possible backup dates. SpaceX has not set a specific range for launch dates, however. Any second launch attempt would likely depend on how far into the fueling process SpaceX gets for Flight 3's first try. SpaceX has said it can take up to several days to resupply its propellant depot for a Starship launch, since the massive rocket and booster consume more than 10 million pounds of super-chilled liquid methane and liquid oxygen propellant.

If Space delays Flight 3 due to a technical glitch or malfunction, the timing of a new attempt would likely hinge on how long it takes to address the issue.

Editor's note: This story was updated on March 14 at 8:30 a.m. with a new 9:25 a.m. EDT launch time for SpaceX's Starship Flight 3.

  • COLGeek What is interesting here is that we haven't gone down the daylight saving argument path. Many think it was a farm thing. As someone who grew up on a farm, many moons ago, I can assure you it had no impact on our work day. We adjusted as conditions changed. Personally, I would do away with the annual changes. In a modern 24/7 world, its usefulness is debatable. Reply
  • Classical Motion It was a city slicker industrial doctrine of early last century for most. Who use it. I don't know of any who need it now. But unlike Ben Franklin, keep DST, not standard time, I don't want to get up at 4:30 in the morning. Ben took that early morning stuff too seriously. Reply
  • garyrich2000 Since PI out to 10 decimals is 3.1415926535, it seems tempting to set T zero at Mar 14, and 13760 seconds (03:49:20) Reply
  • CGJon I find it amazing that with International interests especially space and 'military' matters we don't all stick with GMT or if you prefer to call it such UTC. Anyone following these things, knows how much before or after UTC their locality is, irrespective of DST. Reply
  • Unclear Engineer Most people could care less about GMT. They only need to know when they need to get to work, or some other appointment. That is because they live by the clock in a city instead of living by the sun on a farm or ranch. So, as one of those persons who lived by the clock for my working career, I hated having to drag myself out of bed before dawn and drive in the dark to my office. When "daylight savings time" was extended deeper into the winter's short days, that made me do a lot of driving in the dark. Now that I am retired, I get up with the sun, and go to bed when I am tired. Much less stress. So, if the government is silly enough to make DST year-round, I hope that businesses will go back to adopting "summer hours", "winter hours" and maybe "spring/autumn" hours so that their employees are not unnecessarily getting up before dawn. Ross Bjork thought Jake Diebler was the perfect man to take over as Ohio State basketball's next head coach. AP

  • Stephen Means, cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State incoming athletic director Ross Bjork had a vision when he narrowed his search for the next men’s basketball head coach down to Jake Diebler.

He’d watched Diebler step into an interim role and take a failing team from the bottom of the Big Ten to nearly securing an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament in three weeks, and it gave him an idea. He could have hired a more experienced option from a national program. But he felt a man already in the building validated by what he was hearing. So he decided to come see what was happening for himself.

California yacht owner threatens to kill dock worker in vicious showdown, cali yacht owner threatens to kill dock worker drops pants for rude salute, 95 3/13/2024 8:09 am pt.

A California yacht owner's vicious beef with a dock worker has reached death-threat levels -- and their exchange was caught on camera and included a nude, and very rude, gesture!

Check out the clip ... it all unfolds when San Diego entrepreneur Ajay Thakore swings by the swanky Marriott Marquis Marina in his rare $4.5M Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht to pick up one of his employees -- but things boil over when dock worker Joseph Holt tells him he can't be there.

Thakore, the CEO of medical advertising firm Doctor Multimedia, flips out on Holt big time ... and starts spewing threats like, "I will kill you, you know I will kill you, I will kill."

And it doesn't stop there -- as Thakore's pulling out of the harbor, he drops trou to make a full frontal salute in Holt's direction. Stay classy, San Diego!

Holt's only retaliation was flipping the bird, and he later told CBS8 that was all he could do to keep his cool and avoid escalating the situation.

Holt says parts of the altercation were not captured on camera, and he adds ... Thakore not only threatened to kill him, but also claimed to have connections who could totally mess up his life.

Holt also says Thakore pulled out $100 bills and tossed them at him, even chucking some in the water.

BTW, Thakore's done some backpedaling since the ugly exchange -- he now says, "The interaction that occurred yesterday was regrettable. What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange."

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

FWIW ... One of Thakore’s employees claims the whole thing began because other dock workers blocked him from boarding the yacht.

Oh, and if that fancy Lambo yacht looks familiar -- it's the same one Chuck Liddell recently tumbled off just last month. Now it's famous AND infamous!
