Before we start, here are a few things to know about Comino:
- The island of Comino takes its name from the plant that grows there in abundance in spring: cumin .
- It’s only 3.496 km² and has 3 year-round inhabitants.
- Comino is only accessible by boat. Cars are not allowed as the area is protected and classified as a nature reserve.
How to get to Comino and the Blue Lagoon?
As Comino is located between the island of Malta and the island of Gozo , shuttle boats and boat trips are offered from these 2 islands.
Here are all the options you have to get to Comino from Malta and Gozo:
Getting to Comino Blue Lagoon from Malta
From Malta , you can go to Comino by boat from several towns: Valletta , Buggiba/ St Paul’s Bay , as well as from Cirkewwa and Marfa , in the North of Malta.
There are 9 different ways to go to Comino:
- Day trip to Comino Blue Lagoon
- Catamaran boat trip to the Blue Lagoon and other bays
- Sailboat day trip to Comino (3 islands)
- Private boat trip to Comino (3h) or Full Day
- Private sailboat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon
- Day trip to Comino Blue Lagoon + Gozo
- Evening trip to Comino “Swim, Drink Dance” (Adults only)
- Comino shuttle boat from the North of Malta
- Renting a boat to visit the Blue Lagoon
I will now detail each option , so you can choose the one that will suit you the best!
This boat trip is the most classic way to go to Comino and the Blue lagoon .
The boat departs daily from St Paul’s Bay , a town in the northwest of Malta , 15 km from the capital Valletta.
The great thing about this tour is that they can organize pickup/drop-off from hotels in Malta.
So if you don’t have a car, you can contact the company after booking and they will organize the transport for an extra fee. In any case, that will be much cheaper than a taxi!
So even if you haven’t hired a car for your itinerary in Malta , you can still enjoy the beautiful island of Comino.
Once on the boat, you will start to navigate along the North coast of Malta before reaching the first stop of the day: the Crystal Lagoon . A bit less known than the Blue Lagoon, Comino’s other lagoon is just as nice to have a swim!
Surrounded by high cliffs and with translucent water , the place is super beautiful and can only be reached by boat. You will spend around 1 hour there to swim and snorkel .
The boat then goes to the famous Blue Lagoon of Comino, where you will have the chance to spend the rest of the day swimming (and taking pictures of the crystal clear water!).
During the day, you will also be able to enjoy all the facilities of the boat: slides, deck chairs , underwater vision for fish watching, showers, toilets .
And of course, you can take a walk around Comino if you feel like it. I will tell you more about the things to do in Comino a bit further down the article.
On the way back , you will pass by Santa Maria cave (used by pirates to hide their booty!) and the other sea caves of Comino.
To book this boat trip to Comino from Malta , you simply need to click on the button below:
Remember to bring everything you need for the day: towels, sun cream, hat . There is no shade at all on Comino and it’s very hot in summer!
To go to the Blue Lagoon, you can also opt for a Catamaran day trip.
Just like for the “classic” day trip to Comino I mentioned above, the boat will depart from St Paul’s Bay and you can opt for the hotel pickup option (after booking) if you don’t have a car.
During the day, you will go to the best swimming and snorkeling locations of Malta, including Comino Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon of course!
The destination you will go to will depend on the weather and sea conditions: the captain will make sure you will be at the right place at the right time.
In addition to the Blue Lagoon, other possible swimming destinations include:
- Ghajn Tuffieha bay in Malta and sail close to Popeye Village
- Mellieha bay in Malta
- Ramla bay in Gozo
For lunch, you can opt for the traditionnal BBQ they are making and serving on board (it needs to be booked directly on site). It’s delicious!
No doubt you will love your day at sea on the world’s largest day passenger sailing Catamaran. 😊
To book your catamaran trip to the Blue Lagoon and other bays, you simply need to click on the button below:
Third option to visit the beautiful Blue Lagoon of Comino (as well as other Maltese bays!) is to opt for the famous Sailboat “3 islands” day trip.
What’s amazing about this trip is that you will sail on a beautiful wooden Turkish Gullet , and everything is included:
Hotel pickup and drop-off, lunch (including wine!) and snorkeling equipment.
During this fantastic day at sea, you will discover:
- Paradise Bay (North of Malta)
- The Crystal Lagoon in Comino
- The Blue Lagoon indeed!
- Comino’s sea caves , including Santa Maria’s cave
- Armier Bay (North of Malta)
A great itinerary for a 1 day boat trip!
To book it, you simply need to click on the button below:
You want to discover more than just Comino?
You don’t want to be with the other tourists?
Then this private boat trip to Comino and Gozo is made for you!
During 3h, you and your group (up to 6 people) will discover the southern coast of Gozo as well as Comino : the sea caves, the Crystal Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon indeed!
Josef, your skipper, will show you the best places to swim far from other tourists and tell you interesting anecdotes about Gozo and Comino.
In addition, the snorkeling equipment is included.
The tour will start from Gozo Harbor (next to the ferry) or Northern Malta: Marfa (Riviera Hotel) or Cirkewwa (Paradise Hotel).
And as it’s a private tour, you can decide of the starting time with Josef.
You will also be able to decide of the route, how long you want to stop for a swim and more! It’s your tour , and everything can be customized according to your wishes.
To book your half day boat tour to Comino and Gozo, simply click on the button below:
You think half a day at sea isn’t enough?
Well, it’s also possible to book a full day VIP private boat trip (6h) to Comino Blue Lagoon and Gozo!
In this case, you will discover the best of Southern Gozo and go all around Comino . It’s the only way to get a good grasp of both islands from the sea in a day.
It’s what I did during my trip to Malta and it was one of the best day I had in my life! (along with the Gozo VIP quad bike tour I talk about here: how to visit Gozo by quad bike? )
You need to book your full day private boat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon and Gozo here:
Another amazing way to discover Comino, the Blue Lagoon and even more Maltese bays is to opt for a full day VIP private sailboat tour!
Just like for the other private boat trip I mentioned above, the boat will be only for your group . This means that you can go wherever you want and spend as much time as you please at a given location!
Another great thing is that this boat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon starts from Valletta . This will allow you to discover the Grand Harbor from the sea!
I won’t tell it enough, but for me, this kind of private boat trips are the best way to make the most of your day at sea.
To book your private sailboat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon and other Maltese bays, simply click on the button below:
You’re in Malta only for a few days and don’t want to spend too much time in Comino to be able to visit other places too?
Well, this day trip to Comino Blue Lagoon + Gozo is made for you!
Just like the full day trip to Comino Blue Lagoon I mentioned above, the tour will start from St Paul’s Bay.
During this tour, you will spend 1h at Comino Blue Lagoon in the morning.
You will then head to Gozo, where you will have 3 hours of free time to visit the island . As you will not have a car, you will be able to take the bus or opt for one of the transport the boat company will offer you (for an extra fee).
The various transportation options they offer are a great way to see as much as possible during these 3 hours in Gozo. It’s also very convenient as it will take you back to your starting point to catch the boat back to Malta .
During high season, the boat will then make one last stop at the Crystal Lagoon, where you can enjoy 1h of snorkeling.
To book your boat trip to Comino + Gozo, it’s super simple, you just have to click on the button below:
If you want to visit Gozo and Comino in a day , there is another version of this trip that includes:
- Free pick up and drop off from several towns in Malta: Valletta, Gzira, Sliema, Buggiba, Mellieha…
- 3h tour of Gozo by Jeep
- 3h boat trip around Comino and the caves with swimming stops at the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon.
It needs to be booked here:
The Swim, Drink, Dance evening boat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon is very different than the other day trips I mentioned above, for 3 reasons:
- It’s an “adults only” boat trip
- You’re going to the Blue Lagoon in the evening , so you will avoid the crowd (and the sunburns 😋)
- It’s more a “lounge bar/dance” kind of excursion, so if you want to meet new people, it’s a great choice!
To book your evening at the blue Lagoon, it’s here:
To reach Comino Blue Lagoon, your last option is to take a shuttle boat from the North of Malta or from Gozo.
Please note that this is a taxi boat (not a ferry) with room for only 20 people and no cars/scooters/bikes. Motor vehicles are anyway no allowed on Comino.
These shuttles depart from Cirkewwa and Marfa , 2 places located in the very north of Malta and only 2 km apart.
Cirkewwa is also Gozo ferry’s departure point (you can take it with your rental car, no problem!).
That’s why some people get confused and think it’s possible to take the ferry from Cirkewwa to Comino. But it’s not the same thing, the ferry only goes to Gozo.
Marfa , on the other hand, is a small bay located in front of the Labranda Riviere & Spa Hotel .
The taxi boat ride to Comino from the North of Malta takes around 15 minutes.
To book your shuttle boat to Comino Blue Lagoon from Nothern Malta (Cirkewwa or Marfa – same price), you simply have to click on the button below:
And if you prefer to take a shuttle boat from Gozo to the Blue lagoon:
- The shuttle boat will depart from Gozo harbor , just in front of the ferry
- The boat ride to the blue Lagoon will take around 10 minutes.
You will need to book your taxi boat from Gozo to Comino Blue Lagoon there:
No matter where you depart from, the price always include the return trip.
There are boats all day long in summer, so you can choose a departure time that suits you. For the return, same thing, just get in the boat to leave Comino when you will want!
During winter, the company will contact you to arrange a boat at a convenient time for everyone.
If you are driving to Cirkewwa and Marfa , you can park in one of the nearby car parks .
You can also go to Cirkewwa by bus from the Malta’s main cities (Mellieha/ Buggiba/ St’Paul’s Bay/ Sliema/ Valletta). There is also a bus stop 200 meters from Marfa.
To check the bus timetable and plan your journey, you should visit Malta Public Transport official website or download “Tallinja” app.
If you have the boat license, you have another option to go to Comino Blue Lagoon: renting a boat!
It’s a great choice if you want to visit Comino with your family and friends.
If you want to rent a boat for a nice day at sea during your trip to Malta, you should book it with Samboat.
Motorboats, sailboats, yachts, small boats without a license, with or without a skipper: they simply have the most complete offer for boat rental!
So, what are you waiting for to book your sea trip in Malta? 😊
How to go to Comino from Gozo
If you prefer to go to Comino from Gozo (instead of from Malta), you also have several options.
- Private boat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon from Gozo
- Shuttle boat to Comino from Mgarr harbor
As I have mentioned above, in “4. Private boat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon and Gozo” Josef’s private boat trip going to the Blue Lagoon can also departs from Gozo!
In that case, you will start your boat trip from Mgarr Harbor, where Gozo ferry arrives.
He offers 2 different boat trips (click on the orange links to book):
- 3h private boat trip to Comino and Southern Gozo
- Full Day private boat trip to Comino and Southern Gozo (my personal choice!)
Simply choose the duration you want and enjoy a perfect day at sea with Josef!
Your 2nd option to go to Comino from Gozo is to take the shuttle boat from Mgarr harbor.
They are located just in front of the ferry departure , it’s very easy!
Your shuttle boat to Comino Blue Lagoon tickets need to be purchased in advance by clicking here:
The 6 best things to do in Comino
Now that you know how to get to Comino from Malta or Gozo, here is my list of the best things to do on this small island.
You already know it: the Blue Lagoon is the most famous tourist attraction of Comino.
This splendid lagoon with turquoise water is actually the reason why most people are going to Comino during their trip to Malta.
It’s simply the most beautiful place in Malta to have swim!
When you will arrive in Comino, you can’t miss it: all boats arrive directly at the Blue Lagoon.
Opposite the Blue Lagoon, you can also swim to the small island of Cominotto.
If you took a boat tour to go to Comino, you can enjoy the sun on the deck of the boat after a swim in the Blue Lagoon.
However, if you took the taxi boat, you may want to rent deckchairs or sit on the rocks overlooking the lagoon.
In any case, try to arrive early in the morning if you want to get a sunbed or to find a good spot, as it quickly gets crowded after 10 am.
If you have any valuables you don’t want to let on the beach when you go swimming, you can put them in the lockers located next to the boat pier.
The Crystal Lagoon is the other lagoon of Comino.
Reachable only by boat , it’s quieter than the Blue Lagoon. It’s also known to be one of the best places in Malta to do snorkeling.
And if you’re up for an adrenaline rush , you can try cliff jumping from one of the few spots around the Lagoon. (Always make sure the water is deep enough first!)
On Comino, you can also go to 2 other nice beaches , much less frequented than the Blue Lagoon:
- Santa Maria Beach, a sandy beach with crystal clear water located 20 minutes walk from the Blue Lagoon. Deckchairs and parasols can be rented + There is a food kiosk
- San Niklaw beach , a very small (but nice!) beach.
If you don’t like to spend the whole day in the water or get bored quickly at the beach, you should go for a hike around Comino!
This 3 hour walk is the best way to admire the landscape and enjoy a quiet moment, far from the other tourists.
You should walk around the island in an anti-clockwise direction , first heading to Saint Mary’s tower.
You can climb to the top of this former 17th century watchtower and enjoy an amazing 360° view over Comino, Malta and Gozo .
To get inside the tower, you will be asked to make a small donation (1 or 2 euros per person). Quick tip : You can only visit the tower if the flag is raised, it means it’s open to visitors.
After your visit, continue your walk to St Mary’s Battery. Built in 1715 to protect Malta, it houses 6 cannons.
From the battery you can take the path that goes directly to Santa Maria beach or opt for the slightly longer version of the hike by walking along the cliffs first (there is no real path along the cliffs, so you need to wear good shoes!).
From Santa Maria beach, it will then take about 20 minutes to get back to your starting point: the Blue Lagoon.
Bring trainers if you want to visit Comino on foot, as the paths are quite rough.
In summer especially, remember to bring water with you for the hike as you won’t be able to buy some before reaching Santa Maria bay.
You might not know it, but Comino is also an amazing place to go diving!
With warm and super clear water, it’s the perfect place to discover the underwater world and see the corals and fishes.
The Crystal Lagoon, Santa Maria Cave or the Cominotto Reef are some of the best diving spots.
At the foot of Santa Maria tower, you can also dive to see the P31 wreck , a patrol boat used by the armed forces and now lying 20 metres underwater .
To dive in Comino, you will need to be an experienced diver (first dives aren’t organized there) and book your dive in advance by clicking on the button below:
Swimming in the Blue Lagoon, snorkeling and hiking around the island are really the 3 main activities to do in Comino.
But if you want more, from the boat pier, you can also go for a towed buoy tour, rent kayaks or rent jet skis.
- 7 days / 6 nights
- Optimized itinerary
- Created by Voyage Tips
- 8 days / 7 nights
- 10 days / 9 nights
There are no restaurants on Comino, but you will find food trucks selling sandwiches, burgers, chips and cold drinks.
It will for sure not be the best lunch of your life, but the prices are quite fair, especially considering the fact that there is no competition.
And if you want to be totally trendy, there is one thing you must do in Comino: drink a cocktail served in a pineapple!
You can choose between pina colada, mojito…or Blue Lagoon! With or without alcohol.
Don’t forget to take a picture of your pineapple cocktail with the turquoise colour of the Blue Lagoon in the background 😉.
The best things to do around Comino

Where to stay when visiting Comino?
If you were planning to spend a holiday in Comino , this is unfortunately no longer possible.
The only hotel in Comino has recently closed for renovation .
As it will probably be destroyed and completely rebuilt, it’s not yet known when it will reopen.
There is however a campsite in Comino , but it’s just a place to put your tent, there is absoluetly no amenities.
This means that you will have to bring all your equipment (tent, stove etc…) if you want to camp in Comino. Not very convenient!

You can go to Comino all year round .
However, as you are going there by boat, the trips might be canceled due to weather conditions.
It’s hopefully rather uncommon, especially during summer!
During the low season (between November and April) there are fewer departures.
In summer, between June and early September, it gets crowded quickly at the Blue Lagoon.
So your best bet is to opt for a private boat trip that will allow you to visit the Blue Lagoon in the late afternoon ( click here to book the 3h version and there for the full day.)
In my opinion, the best time to go to Comino if you want to swim is end of May-early June and September-October . The water is quite warm and it’s less crowded.
For hiking , you should ideally go to Comino at end of March/April: it’s greener and the temperature is perfect for a walk!

1 Day in Comino, Malta: Itinerary with Top Things to Do
Ultimate Guide of Comino and the Blue Lagoon (Malta)
To visit Comino is to discover Malta ‘s smallest island .
Renowned for its magnificent Blue Lagoon (“blue lagoon” in French), a lagoon with turquoise water where it is impossible to resist a swim, Comino offers a postcard landscape . It is clearly a must of a Malta itinerary !
In this guide, I tell you how to get to Comino , what are the best boat trips and all the things to do in Comino. You will have all the practical information and my advice to spend a dream day!
So, ready for your visit to Comino and the blue lagoon?
Table of Contents
The island of Comino: a must in Malta
Before we begin, here are some things you need to know about Comino:
- The island of Comino takes its name from the plant that grows there in abundance in the spring: cumin.
- It is only 3,496 km² and has only 3 year-round inhabitants.
- Comino is accessible only by boat . Cars are not allowed as the area is protected and classified as a nature reserve.
How to get to Comino and the Blue Lagoon?
As Comino is located between the island of Malta and the island of Gozo , transfers and boat excursions are offered from these 2 islands.
I detail all the ways to get to Comino from Malta and Gozo just below.
Getting to Comino from Malta
There are 9 different ways to get to Comino from Malta:
- Comino Blue Lagoon Boat Day Trip
- Blue Lagoon Catamaran Cruise
- Sailing cruise in Comino
- Private boat cruise in Comino (3h) or full day
- Private Blue Lagoon Sailing Tour from Comino
- Excursion à Comino Blue Lagoon + Gozo
- End of the day boat trip to Comino “Swim, Drink and Dance” (adults only!)
- Boat shuttle to Comino from the North of Malta
- Rent a boat to visit the Blue Lagoon
To help you find your way around, I will now detail these 9 best ways to do Malta-Comino by boat. This will allow you to choose the excursion that suits you the most!
1. Comino Day Trip from Malta
This is the most classic way to go to Comino and the Blue Lagoon : choose a day boat trip.
The boat departs daily from St Paul’s Bay , a town located in the North West of Malta , 15 km from the capital Valletta .
What is super convenient is that the company that organizes these boat trips to Comino offers pick- up from all hotels in Malta (at an additional cost).
So don’t worry if you haven’t rented a car for your Malta itinerary , you can still enjoy the beautiful island of Comino!
On the program, you will start by following the north coast of Malta before reaching the first stop of the day: the Crystal Lagoon. A little less known than the Blue Lagoon, the other lagoon of Comino is just as nice for swimming.
Surrounded by high cliffs and with its translucent water , the place is super beautiful and can only be reached by boat and swimming. You will have about 1 hour to swim and snorkel.
The boat then reaches the famous Blue Lagoon of Comino and its ultra-crystalline water where you will have the chance to spend the rest of the day swimming.
You will also be able to take advantage of all the boat’s equipment: slides, deckchairs installed on the deck for relaxation, underwater vision to observe the fish, showers, toilets.
And you can also of course walk a little on Comino if you want. To know what to do in Comino, you just have to read the rest of the article.
On the return , a passage is planned in front of the various sea caves of Comino including the cave of Santa Maria , once used by pirates to hide their loot.
To book this Comino boat trip from Malta here.
Tips for your Comino itinerary:
Remember to bring everything you need for the day: towels, sunscreen, hat . There is no shade at all and it hits dry!
2. Blue Lagoon Catamaran Cruise
To go to the Blue Lagoon , you can also take a catamaran cruise.
Like the previous excursion, the boat leaves from St Paul’s Bay and you can choose, after your reservation (if you don’t have a car), to contact the company to arrange a pick-up in front of your accommodation.
For this day, you will discover the most beautiful snorkeling and swimming spots in Malta , including of course the Blue Lagoon in Comino and the Crystal Lagoon.
In addition to the Blue Lagoon, you can, for example, swim at:
- Ghajn Tuffieha bay (the boat also passes close to Popeye Village) which is one of the best beaches in Malta
- Mellieha, au Nord de Malte
- Ramla bay in Gozo.
For lunch, a delicious barbecue is served on board (to be booked directly online).
To book your catamaran trip to the Blue Lagoon and other bays in Malta.
3. Sailing Cruise in Comino
The third option for visiting Comino’s beautiful Blue Lagoon (and other bays!) is to choose a day trip by sailboat.
We are not talking here about any sailboat but about a very beautiful wooden schooner!
And good news, the excursion includes everything: round-trip hotel pick-up , lunch (+ wine) and snorkeling equipment.
During this day at sea, you will go through:
- Paradise Bay (North of Malta)
- Crystal Lagoon in Comino
- Le Blue Lagoon
- The sea caves of Comino including the cave of Santa Maria
- Armier Bay (North Malta).
A great itinerary for a boat day in Malta!
To book, click here.
4. Private Boat Cruise in Comino and Gozo
For those who want to visit Comino and Gozo without being mixed with other tourists, I have what you need: a private boat trip!
For 3 hours, you and your group (up to 6 people) will discover the south coast of Gozo as well as Comino with a passage through the sea caves, the Crystal Lagoon and of course the unmissable Blue Lagoon.
Josef, your skipper, will take you swimming in the most beautiful spots away from other tourists and will tell you more stories about Gozo and Comino.
In addition, snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel, fins) is provided.
This private boat tour departs from the port of Gozo (right next to the ferry landing between Malta-Gozo) or from the North of Malta: in Marfa (next to the Riviera Hotel) or Cirkewwa (next to the Paradise Hotel) .
You can decide the departure time with Josef and organize the day as you wish by choosing for example how long you want to swim.
This is the big advantage of a private excursion, everything can really be arranged according to your wishes!
To book this half day boat trip to Comino and Gozo
If you think that half a day is not enough to fully enjoy, I advise you to book the same private boat tour but for a full day (7 hours).
In this case, in addition to the south coast of Gozo , it will allow you to go all around the island of Comino by boat. This is the best way to discover the 2 islands from the sea in 1 day.
Book your private boat day trip to Comino and Gozo here.
5. Private Sailing Trip to the Blue Lagoon from Comino
Another way to discover Comino, the Blue Lagoon and the other coves of Malta without going through overly touristy excursions: choose a private sailboat cruise!
Just like the other private excursion I just mentioned, the boat will be reserved only for your group of friends or family . You can go where you want and spend as much time as you want at each swimming spot.
This boat trip departs from Valletta and allows you to cross from Malta to Comino along the entire northeast coast of the island.
For those who stay in Valletta and want to go to Comino , you should know that there is no ferry making Valletta – Comino , so this day is really the best choice!
Not to mention that this type of private cruise is certainly the best way to make the most of it and spend great moments with family or friends.
To book your private sailing trip to Comino Blue Lagoon and other Maltese bays.
6. Excursion to Comino Blue Lagoon + Gozo from Malta
For those who have planned a short stay in Malta and don’t want to spend too much time in Comino in order to visit other places like Gozo, I recommend you to choose a combined excursion instead.
The principle is the same as for the first boat trip I told you about with departure from St Paul’s Bay and possible pick-up at hotels.
During the boat trip, you will make a first stop of 1 hour to swim in the Blue Lagoon of Comino in the morning.
You will then get back on the boat which will drop you off in Gozo where you will have 3 hours of free time to visit the island . As you will not have a vehicle, I advise you to choose one of the means of transport offered by the boat company (in addition to the price of the cruise).
It is the best solution to see as many things as possible and it is also very practical since it will take you back to your starting point to take the boat back to Malta.
During the high season, the boat will stop one last time on the return journey so that you can enjoy an hour of snorkeling in the turquoise waters of the Crystal Lagoon. Nothing like closing a great excursion!
To book the cruise to Comino + Gozo .
You also have another version of this excursion to visit Gozo and Comino in 1 day :
- Free return pick-up from several cities in Malta: Valletta, Gzira, Sliema, Buggiba, Mellieha…
- 3h tour of Gozo by Jeep
- 1 hour lunch break included
- 3 hours by boat around Comino and the caves with swimming stops at the Blue Lagoon and the Crystal Lagoon.
7. End of the day boat trip to Comino “Swim, Drink and Dance” (adults only!)
This Comino Blue Lagoon boat tour is very different from the others for 3 reasons:
- It is only for adults
- You’ll experience the Blue Lagoon in the evening, which helps avoid the crowds (and sunburn!)
- There is a bar, music, you can dance and meet new people!
Book your evening at the Blue Lagoon here.
8. Boat Dhuttle to Comino
From Malta , Comino is also accessible by sea shuttles.
Note that this is not a ferry to Comino but a water taxi that can only accommodate around twenty people and no car/scooter/bicycle.
These shuttles leave from Cirkewwa and Marfa , 2 places located in the very north of Malta and only 2 km apart.
Cirkewwa is also where the ferry to Gozo departs from (which is car-friendly) and that’s why some people confuse and think it’s possible to take the ferry from Cirkewwa to Comino, but that’s not is not the same thing.
The sea shuttles to Cirkewwa Comino are to be taken at the small kiosk located next to the car pier. For Marfa , they are located opposite the Labranda Riviere & Spa hotel .
The Malta-Comino sea shuttle crossing takes approximately 15 minutes.
To book your boat trip to Comino and the Blue Lagoon from the North of Malta (same price from Cirkewwa or Marfa).
And if you prefer to take the sea shuttle from Gozo to go to the Blue Lagoon:
- It departs from the port of Gozo , right next to the ferry
- The journey takes only 10 minutes.
You need to book this water taxi to Comino here.
Regardless of your place of departure, the price always includes the return trip.
In the summer there are boats that run all day, so you can choose to go to Comino whenever you want. Same for the return!
In winter , the service provider will contact you to determine a schedule with you.
If you go to Cirkewwa and Marfa by car , you can park in one of the parking lots nearby.
Cirkewwa is also served by several bus lines from the main towns of Malta (Mellieha/ Buggiba/ St’Paul’s Bay / Sliema/ Valletta) and there is also a bus stop 200 meters from Marfa.
To consult the bus timetables and study your route, I recommend the official Malta public transport website or download the “Tallinja” application.
9. Charter a boat in Malta to get to Comino
If you have your boat license , you can also rent a boat to go to Comino.
Getting to Comino from Gozo
If you prefer to go from Gozo to Comino (instead of starting from the island of Malta), you also have several possibilities:
- Comino Blue Lagoon Private Boat Trip from Gozo
- Boat shuttle to Comino from Mgarr port
1. Comino Blue Lagoon Private Boat Trip from Gozo
I have already told you about it in point 4 “Private boat cruise to Comino and Gozo”, the private cruise to the Blue Lagoon that Josef offers can also depart from Gozo.
In this case, the meeting point is fixed at the port of Mgarr, where the ferry arrives.
You will have the choice between 2 kinds of excursions (click on the links in orange to book):
- A 3-hour private boat trip to Comino and South Gozo
- A full day private cruise around Comino and South Gozo (my recommendation!).
All you have to do is choose the duration of your outing to enjoy a great day at sea with Josef!
2. Boat shuttle to Comino from Mgarr port
Second solution to get to Comino from Gozo : take a sea shuttle.
Departures are from the port of Mgarr (where the ferry that makes the Malta-Gozo crossing arrives) .
To book your taxi boat to Comino from Gozo.
What to do in Comino?
Now that you know how to get to Comino from Malta or Gozo, here is my list of all the things to do on the smaller island.
1. The Blue Lagoon / The Blue Lagoon of Comino
I have already mentioned it several times in this article, the Blue Lagoon of Comino is really the must-see attraction.
If everyone has planned to include the visit of Comino in their program, it is to go see this splendid lagoon with its turquoise and transparent water , and of course to swim there (if the season allows it) .
It’s simple, it’s the most beautiful place in Malta to swim!
You absolutely cannot miss it since this is where the boats land everyone.
In front of the Blue Lagoon, you can also swim to the tiny island of Cominotto.
Between 2 swims in the blue lagoon, if you arrived via a boat trip , you can enjoy the sun on the deck of the boat.
For those who have taken the shuttle , it is possible to rent deckchairs or sit on the rocks overlooking the lagoon. Try to arrive early in the morning if you want to have deckchairs available or to choose a good place, because afterwards everyone will clump together.
For your valuables, you have lockers available next to the landing stage.
2. Crystal Lagoon
The Crystal Lagoon is another lagoon located in Comino.
Only accessible by boat , it is less crowded than the Blue Lagoon and is known to be one of the best places to snorkel in Malta.
And if you fancy an adrenaline rush, you can dive off rocks from one of the spots around the lagoon. (Always make sure the water is deep enough beforehand!)
3. The other beaches of Comino
On Comino, you can also swim on 2 other beaches , much less crowded than the Blue Lagoon and super nice:
- Sante Marija beach, a long strip of fine sand and very clear water, located 20 minutes walk from the Blue Lagoon. Possibility to rent deckchairs and parasols.
- San Niklaw beach, a very small beach also very pretty.
4. Walk around Comino
If you don’t like spending the whole day in the water or you get bored quite quickly at the beach, I advise you to visit Comino on foot.
It is possible to go all around the island in about 3 hours. It’s the best way to admire the landscape and enjoy a quiet moment without the noise of boats or music.
I recommend that you do the tour counter-clockwise starting by going to the side of the Sainte-Marie tower.
This former 17th century guard tower , where it is possible to climb to the top, allows you to contemplate an unobstructed panorama over Comino, Malta and Gozo.
Admission is free but you will be asked to leave a donation at the entrance. A word of advice: you can only visit the tower if the flag is raised, it means that it is open to visitors.
Then continue the walk to the Sainte-Marie battery, built in 1715 to protect Malta and which housed 6 cannons.
From the battery, you can take the path that goes directly to Santa Maria beach or opt for the slightly longer version, first skirting the cliffs.
Then allow about twenty minutes to return to your starting point: the Blue Lagoon.
Plan sneakers if you want to visit Comino on foot.
Remember to bring water because you will not find it anywhere during the walk.
5. Scuba diving in Comino
Swimming in the Blue Lagoon and walking around the island are really the 2 main activities to do in Comino.
But did you know that you can also go diving in Comino.
With warm and super clear water, you can’t dream of a better place to discover the seabed and observe corals and fish.
The Crystal Lagoon, Santa Maria Cave or Cominotto Reef are known to be the best places to dive.
At the foot of the Santa Maria tower, it is also possible to dive to see the wreck of the P31 , a patrol boat used by the armed forces and which now lies 20 meters deep.
6. Other Activities in Comino
Swimming in the Blue Lagoon , snorkeling and hiking around the island are among the top 3 things to do in Comino.
But if you want, from the pier, you can also take a ride in a towed buoy or rent a kayak.
Where to eat in Comino
There are no restaurants on Comino but you will find food trucks selling sandwiches, burgers, fries and cold drinks.
It’s not haute cuisine but honestly the prices are still very correct even though there’s no competition.
In any case, if you want to be totally trendy, there is one thing you absolutely must do in Comino: drink a cocktail served in a pineapple! Choose between pina colada, mojito… with or without alcohol.
And don’t forget to post it on Instagram with the turquoise color of the Blue Lagoon in the background to make people jealous.
What to do around Comino?
As Comino is located between Malta and Gozo and can only be visited during the day, you will have plenty of time to discover the other 2 islands during your stay.
Visit Malta
Here is my pick of the best things to do in Malta:

- Mdina: the ancient capital of Malta, very charming and picturesque

Comino is definitely one of the most beautiful places to swim in Malta, but if you want to take advantage of your trip to spend some time at the beach , I recommend:
- Mellieha Bay: Malta’s longest sandy beach
- Ghajn Tuffieha Bay , which for me is one of the prettiest
- Gnejna Bay: neighbor of Ghajn Tuffieha and also very nice
- Ramla Bay: the largest beach in Gozo renowned for the ocher color of its sand
- Le canyon de Wied Il Ghasri
- The beach of Hondoq Bay and where it is possible to do water activities: subwing , snorkeling , paddle …
This is just a brief overview of the beaches and coves, I have prepared the complete list for you right here: The 25 most beautiful beaches in Malta and Gozo.
Where to Stay?
If you had planned to spend a holiday in Comino , this is currently no longer possible.
Comino’s only hotel recently closed for renovations . It will probably be destroyed and completely rebuilt! It is not yet known when it will reopen.
There is indeed a campsite in Comino , which is located near the beach of Santa Marija but these are “bare” pitches . You will have to bring all your equipment (tent, stove, etc.) if you want to camp in Comino, which is not at all easy.
As you will have understood, you will therefore have to stay in Malta or Gozo to go to Comino.
Here is my selection of the best hotels in Malta and Gozo according to your budget and classified by city.
Accommodation in Malta
If you want a hotel in the south of Malta , I advise you to sleep near Valletta:
- Grand Harbor Hotel : Hotel with traditional architecture, located in the city center of Valletta, just 100 meters from the Upper Barraka Gardens. Basic double room from €90 per night or with a view of the sea and the Three Cities for €110, breakfast included. Most: ideal location, magnificent view, the roof terrace.
- Tano’s Boutique guesthouse : Hotel located in the center of Valletta, close to all the places to visit. Spacious and bright double room from €115 per night. The pluses: the central location, the calm, the roof terrace for breakfast. The best value for money in town!
- Grand Hotel Excelsior : 5* hotel located by the sea, the view is truly sublime! Very nice rooms from 170€ per night. Most: The swimming pool, the jacuzzi, the free parking, the excellent breakfast, the view, the service, and many other things that will make your stay truly exceptional! Our big favorite in Valletta.
- Hotel Phenicia Malta : Luxury hotel located on City Gate Square. Spacious, bright and tastefully decorated double room from €349, breakfast at €17. The pluses: the infinity pool with a view of the port, the huge garden, the location and the free private parking. This is simply the best hotel in Valletta.
For a stay in the North of Malta (convenient to get to Comino), the best is to choose a hotel near Mellieha:
- Pergola Hotel & Spa : Located in Mellieha, overlooking the bay, the church and the village, Gozo and Comino. Studio with equipped kitchenette from €57, breakfast €8. The pluses: the possibility of cooking, the view, excellent service, the 3 swimming pools.
- Maritim Antonine Hotel & spa : Located in the town of Mellieha, 1 km from a large sandy beach. Huge and elegant double room from € 77 per night, breakfast included. The pluses: rooftop swimming pool on the 9th floor offering a panoramic view of the entire bay, heated swimming pool and jacuzzi, varied and plentiful buffet, proximity to bus stops to get to Valletta or the beach. It is our favorite for its performance / price ratio.
- Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands : Located in Golden Bay, 2 minutes walk from a beautiful beach. Large double room with balcony and view of the sea or the countryside from 150 e per night, breakfast at 20€. The pluses: access to the beach, the view, the delicious breakfast, in summer the price includes the provision of deckchairs and parasols on the private beach.
Accommodation in Gozo
- Guesthouse Bambina : Guesthouse located in Xaghra, 10 minutes walk from the beach. Double room with modern and zen decoration from 75€. Most: superb house with swimming pool and a magnificent view of Gozo, warm welcome, access to the beach on foot, and the almost unbeatable price. Our choice for its excellent price/performance ratio!
- Casa Gemelli Bboutique Guesthouse : Charming hotel located in Victoria, the main town of Gozo. Entirely renovated double room with decoration mixing traditional and modern from 90€, breakfast included. The pluses: location in Victoria allowing you to take all the buses, the homemade breakfast, the friendliness and the precious advice of the staff.
- The Duke Boutique Hostel : Establishment located in the center of Victoria. Huge and comfortable double room from €100 per night, breakfast included. The pluses: the location, great bedding, the view from the roof terrace, the varied and hearty breakfast, the availability of staff, some rooms with a jacuzzi on the terrace.
- Kempiski Hotel San Lawrenz : Luxury hotel located in San Lawrenz, near the Inland Sea and the Ta’Pinu Basilica. Spacious and modern double room with balcony from €116 per night, breakfast at an extra €25. Most: the magnificent view, huge swimming pools, indoor swimming pool, free parking, exceptional breakfast, the spa. This is simply the best hotel in Gozo .
And if you prefer to stay in an apartment during your stay in Gozo, I recommend The Holiday Hub Gozo.
Located on the top floor (penthouse) of a typical Maltese stone building with a nice patio, this modern and fully equipped accommodation has 3 large bedrooms + 2 bathrooms.
Can accommodate up to 6 people , it is the best for a trip with family or friends!
It also has 2 beautiful terraces (75m²), ideal for taking your breakfast in the sun or an aperitif at the end of the day.
And we end with the highlight of the show: access to the 150m² rooftop with an above-ground swimming pool, a jacuzzi and a barbecue.
Something to relax after a good day of sightseeing! Our favorite in Gozo, to book well in advance !
When to go to Comino?
It is possible to travel to Comino all year round . The crossing by boat depends on the weather conditions . If there is too much wind for example, the outings are cancelled.
Out of season , there are fewer departures between November and April.
In terms of tourist influx, you should know that there are really a lot of people between June and early September at the Blue Lagoon.
The best option to avoid the crowds is then to opt for a private boat trip which will allow you to discover the Blue Lagoon at the end of the afternoon ( book here for the 3 hour version or here for the full day ).
For me the best time to go to Comino if you want to swim is May -early June and September-October . The water is quite warm and there are fewer people.
For hiking , Comino Island is prettiest in March/April, when the vegetation is out.

How To Get To Comino & The Blue Lagoon in Malta
Last updated on November 20th, 2023 at 07:16 pm
Comino is an unmissable part of any trip to Malta and this guide on how to get to Comino and the Blue Lagoon is all you need to plan the perfect day trip to this small yet spectacular island.
A little speck in the Mediterranean Sea, this three-and-a-half square kilometre rock is the smallest of the country’s three main islands – Malta, Gozo, and Comino. The latter is largely uninhabited, save for just two official residents. At least, that’s what we were told.
Despite – or perhaps because of – its splendid isolation, Comino is a must-see on any Malta itinerary, boasting some gorgeous natural landscapes that are unlike anything else in the Maltese Archipelago. Undoubtedly, the ultimate highlight of Comino is the Blue Lagoon. That said, there are several other amazing things to see in Comino, apart from the Blue Lagoon.
In this article, you’ll find out how to get to Comino from Malta or Gozo, alongside the best things to do in Comino, apart from swimming in the turquoise waters of the famous Blue Lagoon.

Is Comino Worth Visiting?
If you’re wondering why you should visit Comino, the answer could be limited to just three words: the Blue Lagoon. This natural wonder is often the top reason to visit Comino. When the sun is glittering off the perfect turquoise waters, it truly is an amazingly beautiful spot. On a hot day, paddling here feels like a small slice of heaven.
That said, while the Blue Lagoon is one of the highlights in Malta, there are enough other things to explore to turn a trip to Comino into a full-day visit. First off, you will find, of course, many other beaches and swimming spots to explore, which are perfect for sun worshippers and snorkelling fans.
On top of that, you can also explore a handful of historic buildings that give the whole place a romantic impression of a lost civilisation. Even if most of these structures were in use by the Maltese government just a few decades ago. And let’s not forget about the jaw-dropping sea views at every turn.
Best Tours For a Fantastic Comino Day Trip
- Catamaran Trip to Comino Island from Bugibba (Saint Paul’s Bay) in Malta
- Comino Island Cruise from Sliema in Malta
- Sunset Cruise to the Blue Lagoon away from the crowds
- Explore the Blue Lagoon on a Private Boat Trip
- Kayaking Adventure from Gozo to Comino
How To Get To Comino From Malta Island
Since there are no hotels in Comino – the island’s only hotel shut its doors a couple of years ago – you can only experience Comino and the Blue Lagoon as part of a day trip. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to reach these shores, either from the main island of Malta or the smaller island of Gozo.
If you’re wondering how to get to Comino and the Blue Lagoon in Malta, one of the most popular ways is to take the local ferry. To be precise, it’s more of a large motorboat than a proper ferry, but it does the job just fine.
The ferry ride takes around 25 minutes, with a service running every half an hour – always weather permitting, of course. There are two different departure points, situated close to one another. The harbour at Cirkewwa and the small port of Marfa . Incidentally, Cirkewwa is also where you can find the (actual) ferry that travels between Malta and Gozo.
While there are ferries from both Cirkewwa and Marfa, we tried the Marfa option, as we were on a road trip. Why? Because it’s much easier to find a parking spot in Marfa. As a rough guide, Cirkewwa is ideal if you are taking the bus as the boarding point is opposite the Cirkewwa Bus Terminal.
On the other hand, if you’re moving around by car, the Marfa boarding point is the best option. You can park your car here . You can buy your ferry tickets either online or prior to your boarding at the kiosks near the boarding points. Check the schedule and prices on the official website of Comino Ferries. As far as timings go, it takes just under an hour to drive to Marfa from the Maltese capital, Valletta.
On a Boat Tour
If convenience is your priority or you haven’t rented a car that allows you to drive to the ferry terminal, there are also several companies offering Blue Lagoon boat trips. These depart from all the main Malta hotspots, such as the resort towns of Saint Paul and Sliema. If you’re staying in Valetta, you have to take the Sliema Ferry first to get straight to the port in Sliema from where the boat trips from Malta to Comino Island start.
Depending on where you’re staying, you can pick one of those boat tours to the Blue Lagoon and Comino Island:
- From Bugibba in Saint Paul’s Bay, this Catamaran Trip will take you not only to the Blue Lagoon but also to Popeye Village and other bays on Malta Island.
- From Sliema, this Comino Island Cruise allows you to spend a full day on Comino Island and enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Blue Lagoon.
When it comes to deciding how to get to the Blue Lagoon in Malta, bear in mind that these boat tours are more prone to weather-related disruptions. Plus, you will find yourself tied to the boat’s schedule, rather than being able to set your own agenda.
You should expect to spend a little more for a boat trip. However, the huge benefit of this option is you can swim off the vessel – or, in some cases, slide off – rather than scrapping with the other tourists over the extremely limited sandy beach space at the Blue Lagoon, especially during busy times of the year and day.
If you pick the right boat company, you can explore several different Comino beaches, coves and caves over the course of several hours instead.
If you get seasick, opt for the ferry to Comino instead of a boat tour. First of all, the ferry ride from Marfa or Cirkewwa takes a lot less than the boat tour from Saint Paul’s Bay or Sliema to Comino. Secondly, the area between Marfa/Cirkewwa and Comino is largely protected from the winds.
How To Get To Comino From Gozo Island
The options on how to get to Comino from Gozo are similar to those from Malta. You can either catch a ferry or join a boat tour. As you would expect, given that Gozo is about a third of the size of the main Malta Island, there are fewer choices and times for everything.
The Blue Lagoon ferry leaves from Mgarr , Gozo’s port, every hour and takes just 15 minutes. Again, if you have a car, it’s easy to reach the harbour from anywhere on the island. However, if you are going vehicle-free, the 301 bus provides a fairly fast 25-minute journey between Gozo’s main town, Victoria , and the ferry terminal at Mgarr.
While there are boat tour options from Gozo, including some that can arrange transfers from other major towns around the island to the harbour, there isn’t the same proliferation of operators as there is from Malta. Therefore, you might want to consider a private boat rental. This also, of course, means greater flexibility, albeit at a higher price tag.
For the adventurous, the proximity of Comino to Gozo opens up another pretty cool option: kayaking. It’s possible to sign onto a kayak tour for a full day or a half day that will take you around the beaches and bays of Comino. These are usually led by a professional guide, so you don’t need to worry about getting lost.
Facilities on Comino Island
The most important consideration first: there are public toilets on Comino Island. If you want to rinse off, you can also find showers on a ridge above the Blue Lagoon.
During high season, several food trucks rock up to service the tourist crowd. They range from simple sandwiches to cocktails served up in pineapples. An Instagram gimmick that is pretty random, considering these tropical fruits aren’t grown anywhere in the Mediterranean Sea.
There are also other beach essentials that you can rent on-site rather than lugging them all the way over yourself. These include deck chairs and umbrellas if you intend to set up shop for the morning, afternoon or even the whole day.
Last but not least, there are also luggage storage facilities in case you want to leave your valuables somewhere safe while exploring Comino.
Things To Do in Comino
1. enjoy the crystal clear waters of the blue lagoon.
Yes, we’ve already mentioned this, but the Blue Lagoon is Comino’s number-one attraction. A narrow channel of water between the main Comino Island and the smaller Cominotto Island, the Blue Lagoon gets filled with boats and people during the summer season.
Fair warning: you will not find much peace and quiet here. However, it is worth braving the crowds to bathe for a little while in such fantastically clear waters. We’d recommend heading out in the early morning – we’re talking 8 am or 9 am early – or late afternoon to avoid the floods of people that pile off boats and onto the very narrow strip of land that constitutes a beach.
2. Swim To Cominotto Island
While you are at the Blue Lagoon, take a few minutes to check out Cominotto . This tiny little land mass is just 0.25 square kilometres large and helps shield the Blue Lagoon from the open sea.
While there isn’t any way to reach the island on foot, it is only a short, fairly gentle swim across from the Comino port. The surrounding reefs provide excellent snorkelling opportunities, so bring along some goggles, too.
3. Sail To The Crystal Lagoon
Named after its crystal clear waters, the Crystal Lagoon is the less popular sibling of the Blue Lagoon. However, it’s almost just as beautiful. The waters are ringed on the land side by cliffs, which means you can only get here as part of a boat trip.
Because of its relative inaccessibility and the fact that it’s less famous than the Blue Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon is a quieter space to enjoy either swimming or snorkelling in the refreshing waters.
4. Hike The Perimeter of The Island
Another way to escape the crowds is to hike the perimeter of Comino. This takes between two and a half and three and a half hours, depending on your pace and how many stops you make. While you won’t be able to explore the Comino caves and reefs as you would by kayaking around the island, you’ll get some of the best views of the picturesque waters and cliffs on this walk instead.
Make sure you bring water, sunscreen and a hat because there is almost nowhere to hide from the rays during this hike.
5. Climb Saint Mary’s Tower
There isn’t much in the way of man-made constructions on Comino Island. That’s one of its major charms if you ask us. That said, of the structures that have weathered the ages, the most striking is Saint Mary’s Tower (Torri ta’ Santa Marija to the locals).
This early 17th-century watchtower is a stocky chunk of a building that was originally erected by the Knights of the Order of Saint John to defend against pirates. It’s not one of a kind as there are several of these fortifications around Malta. Inside Saint Mary’s Tower, you can find a map of all the watchtowers you can – or can’t – visit in Malta and Gozo.
Saint Mary’s Tower has only been restored and opened to the public quite recently, having been used for all sorts of things (prison and bird protection among others) over the centuries, as the plaques on site will inform you. We highly recommend clambering up to the top of the 12-metre-high tower for the views over Comino.
6. Take a Glimpse Outside The Abandoned Isolation Hospital
One of the things you’ll see from the top of Saint Mary’s Tower is a former medical facility that was built by the British in the late 1800s to quarantine soldiers suffering from the plague. Despite its name, we’re pretty sure there is actually someone living there. But the sandy-coloured facade still makes for a pretty snap. Plus, you can hide in the shade of one of the walls if you want a respite from the sun for a minute.
7. Enjoy The Views From Saint Mary’s Gun Battery
Towards the southeastern part of Comino, the remnants of a rather unimpressive gun battery await. First utilised by the Knights of Saint John for defensive purposes back in 1715, there’s not much to see now. Therefore, you shouldn’t go out of your way just to visit the battery. However, as part of a hike around the island, it makes for a good stop-off point.
Saint Mary’s Gun Battery is about halfway around the island from the Blue Lagoon and Comino’s ferry terminal. Therefore, if you’ve brought along a snack or a sandwich, you can enjoy a munch while staring out from the cannon-laden blockhouse roof.
8. Visit The Chapel of Our Lady’s Return From Egypt
The only religious structure on Comino Island, the Chapel of Our Lady’s Return From Egypt is about 400 years old. It has a distinctive arrangement of three bells contained inside a trio of archways atop the roof.
Apparently, there are times when you can peek inside the building to see the restored paintings lining the altar. Yet, it was closed when we got there. Therefore, we can’t tell for sure when – and if – it’s open to the public but it’s worth checking out even from the outside.
9. Escape The Crowds at Santa Maria Bay
The very final thing we’ve included on this list of things to do in Comino is a visit to Santa Maria Bay . This coastal area is less than 30 minutes walk from the Blue Lagoon and boasts an actual sandy beach.
Admittedly, Santa Maria Bay doesn’t have the wow factor of the Blue Lagoon. But that also means it tends to be less crowded. Once you have taken in the glittering, gem-like quality of the Blue Lagoon, you can decamp to Santa Maria Bay for a slightly calmer spot to swim and soak up the sun.
If you’re planning a trip to Malta soon, make sure you leave enough time for a full-day trip to Comino Island. Apart from admiring the utter beauty of the Blue Lagoon, Comino is the perfect place to relax and decompress while hiking, swimming or simply lazing under the Mediterranean sun.
We do hope that you’ll find this guide on how to get to Comino and our list of the best things to do in Comino helpful when planning your trip to this tiny gem of an island in the Mediterranean Sea.
