Italian authorities seize one of world’s largest superyachts from oligarch

Italian authorities have seized a €530m (£444m) superyacht owned by Russian businessman Andrey Melnichenko as part of EU sanctions following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine .

Sy A – short for Sailing Yacht A – was seized on Friday evening in the port of Trieste after being identified by Italian police as belonging to the billionaire owner of EuroChem Group, a major fertiliser producer, and the coal company SUEK.

Video footage reportedly showed police cars with flashing lights approaching the yacht, said to be one of the largest in the world, and boarding it.

EuroChem and SUEK said in statements on Thursday that Melnichenko had resigned as a member of the board in both companies and withdrawn as their beneficiary, effective on Wednesday.

It comes as Roman Abramovich’s superyacht Solaris was pictured arriving in Tivat, Montenegro, on Saturday. The vessel left a port in Barcelona earlier this week as the UK government imposed sanctions on the Russian billionaire owner of Chelsea Football Club.

On Thursday, it was tracked off the coast of Sicily after reportedly undergoing repairs earlier in the week in Barcelona, one of a number of apparently hurried sailings of Russian billionaires moving their superyachts to avoid seizure. His other yacht, the more luxurious Eclipse, was on Thursday located to the west of the Canary Islands.

A European Council decision authorising the sanctions against Melnichenko says he was one of 37 business leaders who met with the Russian president after the invasion of Ukraine to talk about the potential economic impact of EU and US sanctions.

Melnichenko, the document states, “belongs to the most influential circle of Russian businesspeople with close connections to the Russian government”.

It adds: “He is therefore involved in economic sectors providing a substantial source of revenue to the government of the Russian Federation, which is responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilisation of Ukraine.”

A spokesperson for Melnichenko, Alex Andreev, said the businessman had “no relation to the tragic events in Ukraine. He has no political affiliations”.

“There is no justification whatsoever for placing him on the EU sanctions list,” Andreev said. “We will be disputing these baseless and unjustified sanctions, and believe that the rule of law and common sense will prevail.”

Italian authorities have separately seized €143m worth of luxury yachts and villas owned by Russian billionaires in luxury destinations including Lake Como, Sardinia and the Ligurian coast.

Nobiskrug, the manufacturer of Sailing Yacht A, describes the three-mast vessel on its website as “one of the world’s largest and most advanced superyachts” and the “ultimate embodiment of German superyachts built for the 22nd century”. It is almost 143 metres long, the mainmast is 100 metres above the waterline, and the yacht has a gross tonnage of about 12,600.

Other yachts seized by Italian police include Lady M, owned by Alexei Mordashov who, before being blacklisted this week by the EU, was the richest man in Russia. A yacht owned by Gennady Timchenko, another billionaire with close ties to Putin, was also seized.

Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko, the 97th wealthiest person on the planet according to Forbes, and the ninth richest in Russia, owns the world’s largest sailing super yacht named ‘Sailing Yacht A’. With a cost of £260million, the vessel is an upgrade to the Russian billionaire’s current multi-million pound ‘Motor Yacht A’. An important part of the costs will be recovered by licensing the technology developed for the vessel for commercial applications.

Also know as “White Pearl”, this fabulous “mega yacht” is 142 meters long, has eight decks, six guest rooms, a flight landing area, three swimming pools and includes an underwater observation room. There’s also a disco below the deck, and many mirrored surfaces across its interior and has a crew of 35 people. The yacht will have a high-tech digital control system operated using a touch sensitive sheet of black glass in the bridge. Inside there are extraordinary technical innovations that offer extraordinary comfort.

This epic vessel was built by the German Naval Yards shipyard in Kiel and took three years to be completed. Its 3 carbon fibre masts are among the most technically challenging free-standing carbon composite structures manufactured until now and they are the world’s tallest carbon composite masts.

Nobiskrug White Pearl: Largest sail assisted motor yacht

Currently undergoing sea trials in the North Sea after her launch at Nobiskrug’s shipyard in Kiel, Germany is the unmistakable profile of the world’s largest sail assisted motor yacht. Designed by Philippe Starck for Andrey Melnichenko, the young Russian billionaire ranked within Forbes 100 wealthiest individuals, the yacht’s hull and superstructure is as likely to polarize opinion as the designer and owner’s previous collaboration: MY ‘A’.

Measuring a staggering 468’ 6” (142.81m) in length the project codenamed White Pearl was kept highly secretive during her build and development. The first renderings of the project were only released in August, when keeping the projects under wraps was no longer physically possible. The yacht–reportedly to be christened ‘Sailing Yacht A’–boasts a colossal volume of 12,700 GT courtesy of her 81’ 6” (24.88m) beam, exceeds many of the older motor yachts of comparative length by almost double, and matches that of many longer contemporary yachts.

In fact, her gross tonnage is only 436 below that of MY Azzam, at 590’ (180m) the world’s longest yacht. Predictably therefore SY ‘A’ sets many firsts; as a schooner the three masts that make up her Dykstra rig don’t just set records as the tallest masts, they are apparently the tallest and most highly-loaded freestanding composite structures in the world: SY A’s masts were built in the UK by Magma Structures, the booms by Future Fibres in Valencia, Spain and her 4,500sqm+ of in-mast furling sails were supplied by Doyle in the USA. Apparently SY A’s masts have been designed to withstand loads of 40 meganewtons (Mn); that’s twice that expected of a Boeing Dreamliner wing.

The yacht is spread over eight decks with a fixed keel of just 26’ (8m) below the waterline. The wheelhouse is reported to be located on deck seven, a helipad on deck six and there’s accommodation onboard for 54 crewmembers. All this is wrapped in a design purportedly inspired by the infamous buccaneer vessel that starred in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, and lent the Project its name. Whateever the case, the design highlights how together Philippe Starck and owner Melnichenko courageously thumb their nose to established trends in the yachting sector and build unique yachts that challenge our expectations of conventional aesthetics.

Like all great artists and influential patrons, between them Starck and Melnichenko are pioneers, they provoke reaction, discussion and defy anyone to remain indifferent to their presence and creativity. In doing so they also determine to explore the limits of technology. Classed as a sail assisted motor yacht mechanical propulsion is in all-import function for SY A’s locomotion, and in this case it is supplied by a tailormade hybrid diesel-electric package, comprising of twin MTU diesel engines producing 4,827hp (3,600kW) feeding two 4,300kW electric motors mounted to traditional shafts. Quoted performance figures report a top speed of 21-knots, cruising speed under power of 16-knots and a maximum range solely on powered locomotion in excess of 5,000 nautical miles.

WHITE PEARL

WHITE PEARL is a 30.6 m Motor Yacht, built in Italy by Custom Line and delivered in 2014. She is one of 12 CL100 models.

Her top speed is 27.0 kn, her cruising speed is 24.0 kn, and she boasts a maximum cruising range of 455.0 nm at 18.0 kn, with power coming from two MTU diesel engines. She can accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 staterooms, with 5 crew members waiting on their every need. She has a gross tonnage of 199.0 GT and a 7.28 m beam.

She was designed by Zuccon International Project , who also designed the interior. Zuccon International Project has designed 643 yachts and designed the interior of 625 yachts for yachts above 24 metres.

The naval architecture was developed by Ferretti Engineering Department , who has architected 575 other superyachts in the BOAT Pro database - she is built with a Teak deck, a GRP hull, and GRP superstructure.

WHITE PEARL is one of 2077 motor yachts in the 30-35m size range, and, compared to similarly sized motor yachts, her cruising speed is 3.93 kn above the average, her top speed 3.21 kn above the average, and her volume 12.91 GT above the average.

The 111ft (34m) Sunseeker superyacht, WHITE PEARL I is a superb luxury charter yacht with accommodation and amenities for up to eight guests, available for charter in the stunning Greek Islands. After a thorough refurbishment in 2022, WHITE PEARL I is a beautiful blend of classic elements such as gloss wood panelling and Art Deco style furnishings with contemporary décor and accessories.

The deck spaces are generously sized and inviting for charter guests to sunbathe, dine and socialise, and include an expansive foredeck with sunpads and an umbrella, and a large aft deck with dining table and seating. The sundeck boasts full bar, grill, undercover dining, sunpads, lounges and jacuzzi.

Entering the saloon from the aft deck, guests are able to enjoy a sophisticated, yet cosy lounge space, with armchairs, sofas, coffee tables and bar taking full advantage of the views. The décor is a masterful mix of textures, materials and original art and sculpture pieces. At night, the saloon can convert into a cinema with large flatscreen TV and surround sound.

The dining room is separated from the lounge by mirrored pillars which accentuate the light and reflections of the water beyond.

 ACCOMMODATION

Aboard WHITE PEARL I, there are five spacious cabins for eight charter guests. The elegant full-beam master stateroom is located on the main deck and is light and airy thanks to its forward windows and skylight. Along with a queen bed, there’s a sitting area, flatscreen TV, walk-in robe and generously-sized ensuite with jacuzzi bath, shower and twin basins.

On the lower deck, there’s the full-beam VIP cabin with lounge, large walk-in robe and with jacuzzi bath. In addition, there are two twin cabins convertible to double cabins, each with ensuite, plenty of storage, TVs and large windows.

WHITE PEARL I offers guests a huge array of watertoys, including a 5.9m Ribeye RIB tender, two Jet Seadoo RXP-X jetskis, one Sea bob F5S, two SUPS, an inflatable sofa, tubes and waterskis. There’s also a treadmill for on board fitness and exercise.

Das Schiff im Wert von 530 Millionen Euro gehört dem russischen Oligarchen Andrey Melnichenko. Gebaut wurde es in Deutschland.

D ie Guardia die Finanza hat auf der Jagd nach Oligarchen-Vermögen am Freitagabend wieder zugeschlagen. Diesmal tauchte die italienische Finanzpolizei im Hafen von Triest auf und beschlagnahmte die Luxusyacht von Andrey Melnichenko. Das 143 Meter lange Schiff namens „A“ hat drei Masten, von denen der höchste mit 100 Metern über der Wasserlinie größer ist als Big Ben oder die amerikanische Freiheitsstatue.

Nach Angaben der italienischen Regierung hat die Yacht einen Wert von 530 Millionen Euro. Sie wurde im Rahmen der Sanktionen gegen russische Oligarchen im Zusammenhang mit dem Krieg in der Ukraine konfisziert. Schon vor einer Woche hatte Italien bekannt gegeben, Vermögen im Wert von 143 Millionen Euro aus dem Besitz russischer Oligarchen beschlagnahmt zu haben.

Der fünfzigjährige Melnichenko gilt als ein Konzernlenker, der Wladimir Putin nahesteht. Auf der jüngsten Liste des Magazins „Forbes“ liegt er unter den reichsten Milliardären auf Rang 105 mit einem geschätzten Vermögen von 11,6 Milliarden Dollar. Er ist der Eigentümer des russischen Düngemittelherstellers Eurochem sowie des Kohle-Energieunternehmens Suek (Siberian Coal Energy Company). Seine Karriere fing in der russischen Finanzbranche an, schon als Student soll er im Handel mit Devisen Geld verdient haben. Später stieg er auf die Energie- und Chemieindustrie um, in der seine Unternehmen laut „Forbes“ mehr als 100.000 Mitarbeiter beschäftigen. Seine Firmen haben in den vergangenen 15 Jahren rund 23 Milliarden Dollar investiert, berichtet das amerikanische Magazin.

Seine 12.700 Tonnen schwere Segelyacht wurde von der Nobiskrug-Werft in Deutschland gebaut. Das Innere hat der Designer Philippe Starck entworfen, es enthält eine Unterwasser-Lounge mit 4 mal 1,80 Meter großen Scheiben. Das Schiff sei die „ultimative Verkörperung einer Superyacht, kreiert und konstruiert für das 22. Jahrhundert“, heißt es auf der Webseite von Nobiskrug. Ein Hybrid-Diesel-Antrieb und ein hochmodernes Navigationssystem gehören zur Ausstattung.

About the Yacht

The Riviera 39 continued the design and build development of the marque that had evolved over 10 years, offering twin-cabin with one-bathroom accommodation, a well-equipped galley and a U-shape dinette lounge around a timber table that could comfortably seat five adults.

The package earned the 39 Modern Boating magazine’s Boat of the Year award in 1992, the second year in succession that a Riviera had taken the trophy. She was also featured on the front cover of Modern Boating with the headline “39 Steps Ahead”.

The open cockpit was well-suited to cruising in comfort or sports fishing while the open flybridge with now-traditional aft helm station and forward guest seating provided the skipper with clear sight forward or into the cockpit below.

Rescheduling

Rescheduling policy: Any rescheduling of the yacht charter is subject to our rescheduling policy. The charterer may reschedule the charter subject to availability and terms and conditions.

• Rescheduling made more than 1 month prior to the charter date is provided free of charge.
• Rescheduling made less than 1 month prior to the yacht charter date, an additional 50% of charter fees will be charged as a rescheduling fee.
• Any reschedules made within office hours count towards the effective rescheduling period stated above. Rescheduling made after office hours will be counted beginning from the next working day.
• Should Charterer reschedule a weekend charter slot to a weekday charter slot (from a higher-value charter to a lower-value charter), no refunds (whether cash or credit) on the difference of the charter fees will be provided.
• Should Charterer reschedule a weekday charter slot to a weekend charter slot( From a lower value charter to a higher value charter), a top up (whether cash or credit) on the difference of the prevailing charter fees will be required.
• Rescheduled bookings must be placed within 1 month from the original booking date. Otherwise, the booking will be taken as a new request.

Cancellations

Cancellation policy: In any event of cancellation, our cancellation policy applies

• Cancellations made less than 14 days prior to the yacht charter date are subject to 100% of the charter fee, with no refund or rescheduling allowed.
• For cancellations made less than 1 month prior to the yacht charter date, full payment of the charter fee will be charged, with a refund of up to 50% allowed at TYC’s sole discretion.
• For cancellations made more than 1 month in advance, TYC may, at our discretion, allow a refund of up to 100% of the full charter fee.
• All refunds may be made in the form of a cash refund or credit refund.
• Cancellations made within office hours count towards the effective cancellation period stated above. Cancellations made after office hours will be counted beginning from the next working day.
• Any refund, if applicable, shall only apply to the charter fee component. Charges for food catering or other services will not be refunded should the charter be cancelled for any reason.
• TYC will always negotiate with our vendors in the best interests of our clients. Refund decisions by vendors may be transferred where possible. Flexibility may be exercised where possible, with special considerations made by TYC at our sole discretion on a case-by-case basis.

Other Terms & Conditions

• This yacht does not refund if there is a shortfall of guests after payment. You might want to book your charter for the confirmed number of guests and add on within the maximum capacity nearer to the charter date.
• Only fully vaccinated passengers are allowed onboard the SZH-licensed pleasure craft. Unvaccinated passengers (other than recovered individuals, medically ineligible individuals, or children aged 12 years and below) are not allowed to board the craft.
• All rates listed are for basic charters only (4-5 hours depending on the yacht). For the standard itinerary,  please click here .
• BBQ pit and cooking services DO NOT  include food.
• Ice (otherwise stated), disposable cutlery, and cups are not provided.
• Do note for wet weather, the Captain will still sail out if it does not pose any safety issues. If it is not possible to sail out, the Captain will try to  delay the sail-out timing. If it is not possible to sail, the charter will be  rescheduled  to a later date (subject to availability).  No cancellations  are allowed. The Captain will decide what is the next course of action.  Customers are still required to proceed to the marina and wait for the captain’s final decision.
• Disembarkation at Lazarus Island Pontoon is no longer permitted by MPA unless the yacht has a tender boat.
• Balloons are prohibited due to marine life preservation.
• Red wine is strictly prohibited on all yachts except for Anka, MS Eternity and EagleWings 1, 2 and 3.
• If no social gatherings are allowed due to any pandemic, we would reschedule the charter up to a mutually agreeable date and time. No cancellations will be permitted. Strictly  NO refunds and postponements, should there be any reduction in headcount for social gatherings by the MMTF, charterers will need to reduce their own headcount and consume the charter. Notwithstanding the above, there are no refunds or reschedules for bookings even if guests are tested positive for COVID-19 unless agreed by the yacht owners.
