United States Sail Grand Prix: How to watch, stream, time, channel for SailGP's first ever race in Chicago

Sailgp will hit navy pier as 10 national teams are set to compete in a high-speed race on lake michigan.

webp-net-resizeimage-3.jpg

This weekend's race may be the second of SailGP's third season, but a pair of firsts make it a must-see affair. The T-Mobile United States Sail Grand Prix Chicago is SailGP's first ever race in Chicago, and it's also the championship's first race to take place on fresh water.

Beginning at Navy Pier, 10 national teams in F-50 catamarans will race through Lake Michigan in a thrilling high-speed competition from June 18-19. The participating teams are Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and the U.S.

Anna Weis, who sailed for Team USA in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and is LSO slated to compete in this weekend's SailGP race, told CBS that fans should expect significantly more intense sailing than what they may see at home. The carbon fiber boats can travel up to 60 mph, so she isn't exaggerating.

"This is definitely some full-on sailing and not your leisurely everyday, go out and have fun, it is extremely fun, but there's a lot on and there's a lot of technicalities and teamwork that is required to make the boat go fast," Weis said.

Here's the full TV schedule for the T-Mobile United States Sail Grand Prix Chicago. The race can also be streamed on fuboTV (get access now) .

CBS Sports Network Schedule

Since 1934, some of the best offshore sailors in the world have battled for the prestigious Miami to Nassau Cup, including Ted Turner, Dennis Conner, Dick Bertram, and Ted Hood, aboard legendary boats like Running Tide, Windward Passage, Tenacious, and Boomerang. Half a generation after World War II forced a short intermission, the race became part of the fabled Southern Ocean Racing Conference in the 1980s until the series’ dissolution in the 1980s. Building on the race’s welcome rebirth in 2003, the new SORC, a group of race-veteran race managers, announced its management of the Nassau Cup Race in 2010.

Starting in South Florida, racers leave Great Isaacs Light to starboard and proceed past Great Stirrup Light, finally finishing at Nassau harbor. The current course record was set in the 2012 race by Ron O’Hanley on the yacht Privateer with an elapsed time of 13 hours, 31 minutes and 30 seconds. Today’s modern boats just need the right conditions to claim this legendary prize, and racers of all types will enjoy the navigational and crew challenge of the race across the Gulf Stream. The 2021-22 SORC Islands in the Stream Series, which provides five events from November through March along the gulf of Southern Florida, got underway with the 2021 Nassau Cup Ocean Race on November 11. Seventeen teams started off Miami harbor in a solid southeasterly breeze.

John Evans and Trey Sheehan on their TP52 Hooligan led all finishers, completing the course in 21:48:54. Using ORC scoring with the Predominant Upwind Medium course model, Hooligan was first overall, with George Collin’s Tripp 62 Chessie Racing in second by 44 minutes and Tim Tucker’s C&C 115 Rockstar in third place by another 34 minutes in corrected time.

Sailboat racing has long been a part of the long history of this club and we are excited to host races from April to November for local sailors. Membership at PYC is not required to participate.

Look through below for a bit of information on what we have planned. Click here for a list of racing dates.

The Race Committee will be offering a few seminars in the spring. Right now we are expecting to cover tactics, race organization, and other topics. Have a subject in mind, email us . The season may start off with a Laser Frostbite series in April and May.

Image

With the floats and boats in the anchorage our Thursday Night Series starts around the third week of May and runs until the end of September.  May will also see the start of the Tuesday Night Etchells Series and the Wednesday Night J24 Series as those fleets compete in one design duels on the bay thru the summer.

June see the Thursday Night series really kick into gear with the post race BBQ and entertainment. Local weekend races include the Centerboard Regatta and the Harraseeket Regatta.

Image

The 4th of July brings the annual Schooner Trophy Race , a jib & main race around the buoys. A casual, family friendly event. July also sees the return of the Monday Night Dinghy Series . New this year is the two day Pilot Regatta on the weekend of July 16th. This is a new format for an old event, one day will be shorter races and the other day will be a longer event. More details to come!

The first weekend of August sees the classic overnight race of the Monhegan Island Race & Seguin Sprint . This historic race started in 1928 and the legend continues as sailors head out on one of two courses (140 or 50 NM) and experience the majestic beauty of sailing under the stars.

Image

September & October

The fall often sees the breeze pick up and the racing is great. The first weekend after Labor Day will be the classic J24 Downeast Regatta , followed by Fleet 27’s annual Lobster Bowl.  PHRF fleets enjoy the Lightship Race and Fall Series on 4 consecutive Saturdays. Finally at the end of the season the docks are pulled, the boats are hauled and the Laser fleet decides it is time for one more series.

Top 5 sailing races in the world

Antonia Markou

The yachting industry is full of competitions - professional and amateur. The racing of boats first started in Holland before being introduced in England and America in the 17 th century. Since then, yacht clubs and marine institutions have organised all sorts of competitions for social and recreational purposes. Sailboat races come in a variety of different styles, such as single-handed, around the world, coastal and fleet racing.

Many people might want to attend one of these races, so Yachting Pages has put together a list of top 5 significant sailing races in the world:

1. Cowes Week

Cowes Week

One of the oldest and largest annual sailing regattas of its kind in the world, Cowes Week is an iconic feature of the British sporting calendar. It takes place at Solent with 8,000 competitors, from world champion professionals to amateurs. It is also worth mentioning that Cowes Week has onshore events and parties. It is extremely famous for its iconic fireworks finale on the last day.

2. Volvo Ocean Race

Volvo Ocean Race

Formally known as the Whitbread Round the World Race, the Volvo Ocean Race has taken place every three years since 1973. Starting in Europe in October, it’s known as the longest and the most challenging professional event worldwide as its duration is almost nine months and the competitors face strong weather conditions.

3. America’s Cup

America's Cup

The America’s Cup is one of the oldest international sailboat racing events, dating back to 1851. Its prestigious reputation attracts the top professional sailors, yacht designers and the majority of wealthy entrepreneurs and sponsors. The competition is not only focused on sailing skills but also on sail design.

4. Vendée Globe

Vendée Globe

The Vendée Globe is named after the Département of Vendée, France, where the race starts and ends. A single-handed, non-stop round the world race, it’s widely known as one of the most challenging and extreme sporting events. Its duration is more than three months and it takes places every four years. The Vendée Globe puts sailors under great amounts of pressure and it tests their ability to deal with various technical elements during challenging moments.

5. Barcolana

Barcolana

Barcolana is one of the largest and most popular regattas in the Mediterranean. Its first race was in 1969 and it takes place every year in the Gulf of Trieste, Italy. The race attracts thousands of participants with approximately 25,000 sailors and 250,000 spectators who can enjoy the race from plenty of stands in Trieste. The participating boats are divided into several categories depending on their LOA. The competition allows sailors as young as eight years old to participate, including kite surfers and windsurfers.

Kate middleton seen in public for first time since mystery hospitalization, kate middleton spotted in public for first time ... since hospitalization, breaking news 2.1k 3/4/2024 10:23 am pt.

Kate Middleton has surfaced for the first time since her hospitalization earlier this year that sidelined her for a good while -- and she's maintaining a low profile ... or trying to anyway.

The Princess of Wales was seen riding passenger Monday in a vehicle that was being driven by her mother, Carole , near Windsor Castle in the UK ... and like we said, this sighting is a big deal considering we haven't seen her whatsoever since December.

Kate was wearing shades, and appeared to be rocking somewhat of a smile here -- there didn't appear to be any other relatives with them for this outing ... and ditto for security.

It's interesting that she's popping up like this right now ... frankly, the internet has been rife with speculation these past couple weeks over her whereabouts -- and there's been a lot of jokes made at her expense.

Point is though ... people have been wondering where the heck she was and how she was doing -- especially since the condition she's been dealing with has been kept under tight wraps ... with Royal officials only saying she underwent abdominal surgery and nothing else.

Buckingham Palace only said at the time that she would remain hospitalized for about 2 weeks -- and after that, she wouldn't be able to resume her duties until about Easter time.

They also reassured the public that she was making progress in her recovery -- something they reiterated last week when they finally responded to all the viral conjecture going on.

We know Prince William has been coming to her side throughout all this -- he was seen going to the hospital while she was in there ... but since then, he's continued on with his work solo.

Her father-in-law, King Charles , has also been dealing with health issues -- due to his recent cancer diagnosis -- but he's been able to carry on just fine ... already being seen out and about.

Good to see Kate here ... now we all know, she's alive and well!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT SAILBOAT RACES

Santa Cruz is known near and far for its surfing legacy.  Surfer Magazine named Santa Cruz the best surf town in the U.S. , we are home to countless iconic surfers including Jay Moriarty, whose story was featured on the big screen in  Chasing Mavericks , and we even have a  Surfing Museum  that presents our rich history. But there is another water sport that finds a niche on our coast, with a similarly devoted following. Sailboats dot the waves almost as frequently as surf boards here, benefiting from the tides and currents that make this beach town so special. So it is no surprise that the  Santa Cruz Harbor  and the Santa Cruz Yacht Club have become a nexus for the sailing community, with a calendar packed with activities and a weekly regatta, which brings out even the biggest land lover to admire the race every Wednesday.

There is no question that the best place to be during the Wednesday night sailboat race is in the race itself. However, if you don’t have your own boat, or aren’t lucky enough to have a friend with one, there are several options for getting up close and on the water.

O’Neill Yacht Charters ,  Chardonnay II , Stagnaro Whale Watching & Fishing Trips, Pacific Yachting and Sailing, and  California Classic Sail  are all local, longstanding charter companies that offer sunset sailing for groups from very small to very large. This is a great way to be out at sea, with an expert as a guide to educate, narrate and even instruct on how to sail with hands-on tips, depending on which company and group size you choose.

Captain Forest Roberts of California Classic Sail has a long career in boat building and sailing. He takes people out twice a day on “Sarah”, his classic wood yacht designed in the 19th century. He says that being out on the water “is completely different,” compared to watching the race from the shore. “You have that element of having left the day behind, you’re not standing around with a bunch of people looking at something. Some people will put their cell phones away or not take them at all, which is not a bad idea because you really get a sense that you can’t be reached…the way you left it is how its gonna be.”

If, on the other hand, you prefer to stay on dry land, there are numerous scenic spots to watch the action from afar. Anywhere along the shoreline that spans from  Lighthouse Point  down to  Twin Lakes State Beach  and beyond is fair game for viewing. That means you have a wide range of spectator possibilities. Plan a romantic picnic on  West Cliff Drive  or a bonfire cookout at Twin Lakes or  Seabright State Beach . Take a walk along the  Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s Promenade or stroll the  Wharf . Since the regatta course changes every week depending on the wind currents, the best spot to cuddle up on the sand to watch can be a last minute decision at the 5:30pm start time. And don’t worry about trying to stick it out to the very end if a chill is in the air. Captain Roberts says there is no firm finish line and the fun spirit of this “beer can race” is that nobody is really tracking who wins. “The race is to the bar at the yacht club,” he says.

Speaking of bars, the one spot that is unarguably THE place to take in the race is upstairs at the Breakwater Bar & Grill perched on the second floor of the  Crow’s Nest Restaurant . Arrive early to snag a seat, as it is no secret that this is the place to be on Wednesdays, when happy hour lasts all night long. Order from the long list of half price appetizers and discounted drink deals while watching the sailboats line up directly down below at the mouth of the harbor. Downstairs, the main restaurant is not a bad place to be either, if a more serene viewing experience and lengthier menu is more your style. The ocean view and addictive squaw bread rolls can’t be beat.

Across the parking lot is Crow’s Nest Beach Market which features wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, salads and not-to-be-missed soft serve ice cream. While you wait for your order, peruse the well-stocked gift store selections, and then take your food out to the wide sunny deck right along the water to watch the racers sail by on their way out to sea.

If the wind is blowing north, there are many more options that present a place to watch the race over a meal, if a little bit more removed. The Jack O’Neill Restaurant & Lounge located inside the Dream Inn is primed to offer a contemporary menu and glittering upstairs views. Or duck into any number of classic restaurants on the wharf like Stagnaro’s or Gilda’s for a bowl of chowder and views from every table. Along the Boardwalk on Main Street, Ideal Bar & Grill are also great places to get a glimpse, or stop by the  The Picnic Basket  for some delicious seasonal take-out and a cone of organic ice cream to enjoy on the beach nearby.

Few cities in the world are as closely linked to the sport of sailing as the east coast United States city of Newport, Rhode Island.

Founded in 1639, Newport is situated amongst the beautiful scenery on Narragansett Bay – New England’s largest estuary – and is also bordered by the Rhode Island Sound and the Sakonnet River.

The city is renowned for its quaint colonial and New England architecture, its thriving waterfront with restaurants, bistros, art galleries and boutiques and its warm hospitality.

Newport has also evolved into a world-class sailing venue that regularly attracts the world’s best sailors and plays host to the sport’s top tier competitions, such as the America’s Cup. Today it is also the home of the 11th Hour Racing Team.

The first Newport stopover in The Ocean Race was hosted by Sail Newport during the 2014–15 edition and the fleet returned again for the 2017–18 race, making the 2022–23 Newport stop the city’s third consecutive participation in the around-the-world race.

The Ocean Race event had a wide-ranging economic and tourism impact on the community. The 2015 stopover generated an estimated $47.7 million to the Ocean State’s economy. Both previous visits of The Ocean Race to Sail Newport drew large visitor numbers, with over 137,000 people in the race village at Fort Adams in 2015 and over 100,000 in 2018.

The 2015 stopover in Newport marked the birth of the sustainability programme for The Ocean Race, an initiative that subsequently expanded to all stopovers in the 2017–18 edition, in collaboration with 11th Hour Racing, the founding partner of the programme.

From the sailors’ perspective the Newport stopover is a chance for some rest and recuperation while the shore crews prepare their boats for the upcoming potentially gruelling transatlantic passage on Leg 5 from Newport to Aarhus in Denmark.

NASCAR Las Vegas race March 2024: Start time, TV, streaming, lineup for Pennzoil 400

sailboat race today near me

NASCAR heads west for a two-race swing.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway hosts the series this weekend before racing moves to Phoenix Raceway the following week. Each track will also hold a playoff race later in the year, with Las Vegas serving as the first race of the third round and Phoenix once again the site of the championship race.

Following an exciting race and a “Can you believe that finish!” at Atlanta Motor Speedway last weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series seeks to keep that momentum going in Sin City. So does Chevrolet, whose drivers won the first two races this season ( William Byron at the Daytona 500 and Daniel Suarez at Atlanta).

The manufacturer will again be the odds-on favorite to put a driver in victory lane on Sunday. Chevy’s biggest team, Hendrick Motorsports, swept the top three positions at Las Vegas last March with Byron atop the podium followed Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman.

Here is all the information you need to get ready for the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway:

48° North's Top 25 Racing Sailboats of 2022

  • 48° North’s Top 25 Racing Sailboats of 2022

The highly anticipated and hotly contested 48° North Top 25 is back! In 2022, sailboat racing in the Pacific Northwest had the fullest racing calendar and the most participation in several years. The teams that make up this list have sailed consistently well, and frequently — nine of the top ten boats sailed more qualifying races than the five that counted toward their scores.

How do we select these boats? The qualifying races for our Top 25 offer a good representation of keelboat racing in the Pacific Northwest, and include a mix of distance and around-the-buoy races, single-race events and multi-race regattas. Our scoring system is on a percentage basis, depending on the size of the class: 0% (did not finish) to 100% (first in class), where the event score = (Finishers – Place) / (Finishers – 1). Overall scores are an average of a boat’s best five finishes. There is no minimum number of races required to qualify. Multi-race events (like the Southern Sound Series) are scored as single events. For the full list of qualifying races for 2023, please check out 48° North’s Seattle Area Racing Calendar (SARC) in print or online (48north.com/sarc).

The crew of this year’s #1 boat, the J/111 Hooligan , is led by Jay Renehan and Chris Lanzinger, who represent Seattle Yacht Club. For some events, Hooligan was co-skippered by Jay and Chris; for others, it was skippered by one or the other. They sailed in seven qualifying events, and finished first in their class in four of those events. Incredible job, Hooligan team!

Congratulations to every one of 48° North’s Top 25 racing sailboats! It is always a privilege to present the list and we offer our admiration and appreciation for those in the racing community who live it and love it, and sail so well.

A Deep Dive into the World's Most Exciting Sailboat Races

A Deep Dive into the World's Most Exciting Sailboat Races

10 Must-See Sailboat Races around the World

The america's cup.

Known as the oldest international sporting trophy, the America's Cup is an iconic yacht race and a gem in the sailing crown. It started back in 1851 and has held onto its reputation ever since. This race involves an intense competition between two sailing yachts – one defending the title and the other challenging it. A blend of history, tradition, and fierce competition, the America's Cup never fails to enthrall.

The Vendée Globe

If there ever was a race that tested the limits of human endurance, it's the Vendée Globe. Known as the 'Everest of the Seas', this single-handed (solo), non-stop yacht race takes sailors around the world without any assistance. It's a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit and a must-see for anyone intrigued by extreme sailing feats.

Volvo Ocean Race

Taking place every three years, the Volvo Ocean Race is a round-the-world yacht race that pushes sailors to their limits. Over the course of nine months, competitors battle it out across some of the most treacherous seas on the planet. This race is not only a test of sailing expertise but also of resilience, endurance, and team spirit.

The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race

Hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is a highlight of the yachting calendar. It starts in Sydney on Boxing Day and finishes in Hobart, Tasmania. The race is known for its challenging weather conditions and fiercely competitive field, attracting yachtsmen and women from all over the world.

The Fastnet Race

The Fastnet Race is a classic offshore yacht race that offers a thrilling combination of inshore and offshore racing. Starting in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, England, the race takes competitors around the Fastnet Rock off the southwest coast of Ireland before finishing in Plymouth, England. The race is renowned for its tough conditions and strategic challenges.

The Newport Bermuda Race

Established in 1906, the Newport Bermuda Race is a 635-mile ocean race that runs from Newport, Rhode Island to Bermuda. Known for its tactical demands and changeable conditions, it's a race that tests sailors' skills, perseverance, and navigational prowess to the maximum.

The Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac)

Held every two years, the Transpacific Yacht Race is an offshore yacht race from Los Angeles to Honolulu, spanning a distance of around 2,225 nautical miles. The race is a test of navigation and sailing skills, with competitors having to contend with a range of conditions as they cross the Pacific Ocean.

Clipper Round the World Race

Unique in its concept, the Clipper Round the World Race is a two-year event that offers amateur sailors the chance to experience the thrill of circumnavigating the globe. Led by professional skippers, the participants are ordinary people who have undergone training to take on the challenge of the high seas.

Rolex Middle Sea Race

Beginning and ending in Malta, the Rolex Middle Sea Race is a 606 nautical mile adventure that takes competitors around Sicily and the surrounding islands. The race is known for its stunning scenery, tactical challenges, and warm Mediterranean hospitality.

The Barcelona World Race

The Barcelona World Race is a non-stop, round-the-world yacht race designed for sailing duos. It starts and ends in the vibrant city of Barcelona, Spain. This race not only tests the sailing prowess of the participants but also their ability to work seamlessly as a two-person team. It's a thrilling spectacle of teamwork, strategy, and sailing skill.

The Final Buoy:

A swift journey through the top sailboat races in the world. Each race, with its unique challenges and historical significance, contributes to the vibrant tapestry of the sailing world. From solo voyages like the Vendée Globe that push the limits of human endurance to the test of tactics and teamwork found in the Barcelona World Race, the diversity of these races is a testament to the myriad forms of courage and skill found among sailors.

The races we've discussed span the globe, crossing different seas and oceans. From the Pacific's vast expanse in the Transpacific Yacht Race to the treacherous, unpredictable nature of the Bass Strait in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Yet, despite the diverse locales and sailing conditions, they all share an undercurrent of passion for sailing, adventure, and a desire to push the boundaries of what's possible on the open sea.

Sailboat racing is not just about getting from point A to B the fastest. It's about mastering the elements, navigating by the stars, and becoming one with the wind and sea. It's about the moments of calm when it's just you, your boat, and the endless blue. It's about the rush of adrenaline as you surge with the waves, racing neck-and-neck towards the finish line. But above all, it's about the sailing community, a band of individuals who share a profound respect for the sea and a love for the thrill of sailing.

So, whether you're an experienced sailor feeling the pull of the open sea or a landlubber dreaming of hoisting the sails, remember, there's a whole world of sailboat races out there. Each one offers a unique adventure and a chance to be a part of the rich history and thrilling future of sailing. Until our next nautical journey, may you have fair winds and following seas!

7 Global Sailing Races to Follow

By: Zeke Quezada, ASA Destinations , Event , Inside Sailing , Sailing Fun

As American Sailing evolves our curriculum to offer more racing options through North U, I am attempting to learn more about sailboat racing. If you are following along with my journey to become a racer, you know that I am a neophyte when it comes to racing. I am a cruiser. I am a self-described “lazy sailor” that does not focus on trimming my sails and instead works on not dropping my chips and salsa while sailing.

You can get an idea of my journey in my last two pieces on sailing and racing:

SAIL TRIM FOR CRUISERS: WHY TRIM YOUR SAILS?

HOW TO GRADUATE FROM CRUISER TO RACER — STEPS TO START RACING SAILBOATS

I plan to find out more about the serious and not-so-serious side of sailboat racing. Many people, even non-sailors, know what the America’s Cup is, and may have even turned on a sports network to catch a SailGP race. But there is far more to sailing races than those two.

Here’s an overview of seven of the big races, regattas, and race series that occur regularly around the world. These are iconic events, both old and new, that shape the world of racing and have inspired sailors for generations to challenge themselves to new heights, both on and off the water.

Cowes Week is one of the oldest and most prestigious sailing regattas in the world, held every August in the Solent waters off Cowes, UK. The event has been around since 1826, and it’s known for attracting some of the best sailors from around the globe. It’s the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world, with up to 1,000 boats and 8,000 competitors taking part in the 40 daily sailing races.

Whether you’re an Olympic or world-class pro, or just a weekend sailor, Cowes Week is an event that has something for everyone. And even if you’re not into sailing, the regatta is still a spectacle to behold – with stunning views of the coastline and plenty of festivities both on and off the water.

Once you discover the allure of racing it appears that Cowes Week might be worthy of a sailing vacation that includes either participating in a race or just being involved as a spectator. I am not there yet, but it could happen.

Next Race Date: July 29 – Aug 4, 2023 Cowes Week Website

The Ocean Race

I do know about The Ocean Race only because prior to the new owner taking over, it was the Volvo Ocean Race for twenty years and that is how they got me to buy a Volvo. I walked into the dealership and saw some mesmerizing sailboat pictures and I signed the contract and drove away.  I am a sucker.

The Ocean Race is a round-the-world yacht race that occurs every three years. It’s known as one of the most challenging sailing races globally, spanning over 45,000 nautical miles. The race consists of multiple legs and lasts about nine months. The race starts in Europe and ends in Asia or Oceania. The exact route changes with each edition of the race.

Both professional sailors and amateur sailors can participate in this race. The teams are composed of eight sailors, all racing on the same boats. These boats are specially designed to be fast and robust, capable of enduring the tough conditions of the open ocean.

This race used to be known as the Whitbread Round the World Race until it was renamed the Volvo Ocean Race and now is known as The Ocean Race.

Next Race Date: Currently in progress at the time of the post! The Ocean Race Website

America’s Cup

My first foray into sailing racing was when Dennis Conner won the America’s Cup.  I was a kid watching the news and learned about sailing through this huge event on the vessel, Stars and Stripes. Years later I took a ride on what I was told was the same boat. I was skeptical about the origin of the vessel I was on but that day I learned a lot about how much I loved the idea of sailing. A couple of years later I bought a boat.

The America’s Cup is held every few years on dates agreed between the defender and the challenger. There is no fixed schedule, but the races have generally been held every three to four years. The most recent America’s Cup match took place in March 2021.

The 37th America’s Cup Official Opening Ceremony will be held in Barcelona on 22 August 2024. The Final Preliminary Event and the Challenger Selection Series will follow, leading up to the America’s Cup Match that will start on 12 October 2024. During 2023/early 2024, there is potential for up to three preliminary events. By June 2023, all the teams will have their base set up and be training in Barcelona.

The competition takes place between teams representing different countries or yacht clubs. The event involves a series of races where high-tech racing yachts, known as America’s Cup Class boats, compete in head-to-head races that test their speed, agility, and teamwork.

The competition dates back to 1851 when a schooner called America won a race around the Isle of Wight. The trophy, now known as the America’s Cup, was donated to the New York Yacht Club and has since become one of the most prestigious prizes in sailing.

Vendée Globe

If I was a racer I am sure that The Vendée Globe would be the race that would inspire me to go hard into this type of adventure. The Vendée Globe is a single-handed (solo) non-stop yacht race around the world without assistance. It takes place every four years and is an extreme form of sailing.  It is said that more people have been into space than have finished the Vendee Globe. First held in 1989, the race starts and ends in Les Sables-d’Olonne, a small town on the west coast of France, and covers a distance of approximately 45,000 km.

Sailors must navigate their way through some of the most treacherous waters on the planet, including the Southern Ocean and the Cape Horn. Sailors must rely solely on their own skills, knowledge, and experience to complete the race. They face extreme weather conditions, sleep deprivation, and the constant threat of danger as they navigate their way around the world.

The boats are designed specifically for the event and are some of the most advanced sailing vessels in the world, capable of speeds of up to 30 knots.

St. Maarten Heineken Regatta

I must confess that I had a very nice t-shirt from this regatta that I purchased at the St. Maarten airport. I was leaving the country and realized that I had not bought any souvenirs so I found this shirt in the terminal and wore it like a proud sailboat racer. I was an imposter, I had never even seen any of the race and I did not know it existed.

The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is a massive sailing event that takes place on the island of Sint Maarten in the Caribbean. It’s actually the biggest regatta in the Caribbean and the largest warm water regatta in the world.

The event attracts top sailors from 37 countries, who compete in a series of races over four days. The competition draws in sailors that are both professionals and passionate amateurs who just love to sail.

Next Race Date: Feb 29 – Mar 3, 2024 St. Maarten Regatta Website

Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac)

If you live and sail in Southern California, you will hear about Transpac. I have heard about it, and I did not realize it was a race. I always figured it was a group of sailors who sailed across the Pacific to Hawaii in a large caravan, like a large flotilla, without any daily stops. I will confess that when I sailed my Catalina 27 five times a week, I had a few fantasies about tagging along in my boat and stopping over in Hawaii with the Transpac crowd. But, unfortunately, I was misguided.

The Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac) is a biennial offshore yacht race held in odd-numbered years starting off the Pt. Fermin buoy in San Pedro, California, and ending off Diamond Head in Hawaii, a distance of around 2,225 nautical miles (2,560 mi; 4,121 km). It is one of the world’s oldest major ocean races for sailing yachts. The race was first held in 1906 and made a biennial event in 1939 to alternate with the Bermuda Race.

Next Race Date: June 27, 2023 TransPac Website

Now in its 4th season, SailGP is a newer series race held as a competition between nations on identical F50 catamarans. Currently the nations competing include Australia, New Zealand, Emirates Great Britain, France, Canada, Denmark, United States, Switzerland, and Spain. The race is held on weekends in iconic locations around the world modeled in a grand prix format similar to Formula 1 in which points accumulate throughout the season based on winnings from each race and contribute toward a championship.

The race series has a really great app you can use to follow along and watch live, or on YouTube, and they are doing wonderful work expanding the sport’s impact initiatives through their second championship leaderboard that tracks the positive actions the teams make to reduce their overall carbon footprint and help accelerate inclusivity in sailing. The coverage of this series is great to watch – it has a high production value including live mics on the sailors and post race interviews with the sailors. The commentators do a good job educating the audience as to the basics of sailboat racing as well as explaining the racing rules.

Season 4 Opening Race: June 16-17, 2023 Chicago Sail GP Website

So which race strikes your fancy? Here’s hoping you enjoy some of these and find some new inspiration in your sailing journey!

Super Tuesday 2024: Which states are voting, the key rules to know and what's at stake

Voters cast their ballots in Richmond, Va.

Tuesday is the most consequential day in the race for both parties' presidential nominations — a day political junkies have come to call "Super Tuesday."

Sixteen states and one U.S. territory are holding presidential nominating contests Tuesday in some form. For both Republicans and Democrats, they will award more than one-third of the total delegates available throughout the entire nominating contest, all on one day.

Follow live updates on Super Tuesday 2024

Here's a guide to what to expect as voters cast their ballots across the country:

When are the polls open?

The first polls of the day open in Vermont at 6 a.m. ET, and the final polls close in Alaska at midnight ET. In between, here are the other most important times to know:

  • 7 p.m. ET : Polls close in the Virginia and Vermont primaries.
  • 7:30 p.m. ET : Polls close in North Carolina.
  • 8 p.m. ET : Polls close in Alabama, Maine, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Tennessee and most of Texas.
  • 8:30 p.m. ET : Polls close in Arkansas.
  • 9 p.m. ET : Polls close in Colorado, Minnesota and the rest of Texas.
  • 11 p.m. ET : Polls close in California and in Utah's Republican caucuses.

Who can vote?

That depends on the state. A variety of rules govern nominating contests in certain states — here's a look at three of the most common:

  • Open : Voters may choose which primary to vote in regardless of their registration (in many cases, these states also don't ask voters to register by party). Among the Republican contests Tuesday, Alabama, Arkansas, Minnesota, Texas, Virginia and Vermont are holding open primaries.
  • Partially open : These contests are typically restricted to members of the party, as well as unaffiliated voters. In some cases, voters are considered to be registered with a party if they cast their ballots in that primary, at least for the rest of the election cycle. The Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Tennessee primaries are partially open.
  • Closed : Voters must be registered with a party to vote in its primary or caucus. The contests in Alaska, California, Oklahoma and Utah fall into this category on the GOP side.

What’s at stake on the Republican side?

For all the attention paid to the first nominating contests, those early states awarded just 11% of the total delegates in the GOP presidential nominating contest.

There are 865 Republican delegates at stake in the Super Tuesday GOP nominating contests. That’s about 36% of all the delegates in the entire race.

Once all of the delegates from Super Tuesday and the previous contests are allocated, more than 47% of the delegates will have been awarded. And after the four contests March 12, more than 50% of the delegates will have been awarded.

Are the contests winner-take-all or proportional?

While the Republican National Committee's rules don't allow most states to hold true winner-take-all contests before March 15, many Super Tuesday states will turn into de facto winner-take-all states because of the one-on-one nature of the race.

Five states will award every single delegate they have to a majority vote-winner: California, Maine, Massachusetts, Utah and Vermont. Tennessee awards all its delegates to one candidate if he or she wins two-thirds of the vote. Minnesota awards all its delegates to one candidate if he or she wins 80% of the vote.

Five other states — Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia — award all their statewide delegates (at-large delegates) to a candidate who wins a majority of the vote, and then they dole out congressional district delegates separately. A candidate who wins the majority of a district wins all three congressional district delegates.

In all of these states, delegates are awarded proportionally if no candidate wins a majority.

And in others, all the available delegates are awarded proportionally.

What's the GOP’s 'magic number'?

The GOP nominee will be the candidate who clinches the majority of the party’s delegates to the national convention, or 1,215 of the 2,429 delegates.

What do I need to know about the Democratic side?

There’s not much you need to know about the Democratic contests because President Joe Biden is the far-and-away favorite in every one.

Unlike the Republican side, Democrats always award delegates in each state proportionally to candidates who hit a 15% threshold. So it's possible that one of Biden's opponents wins some delegates to the convention based on the results (or, like what happened in Michigan, "uncommitted" wins delegates).

Are Democratic superdelegates still a thing?

Yes, but their power has been greatly diminished since 2016.

Only “pledged delegates,” those won by virtue of the results in nominating contests, can vote for the nominee on the first ballot (those delegates have pledged to cast their ballots for the candidates to which they were allocated, and those candidates’ campaigns play a big role in selecting those pledged delegates).

They can still endorse whatever candidate they please. But the only ways superdelegates are given votes for the nominee at the convention are if:

  • A presidential candidate has clinched the required number of pledged delegates and there’s no doubt about the outcome. That way, superdelegates can technically cast their votes for the party’s presumptive nominee without putting their thumbs on the scale.
  • No candidate has clinched the required number of pledged delegates and the race moves to subsequent ballots in a contested convention. The superdelegates can’t vote on the first ballot, but they become free to cast votes on the subsequent ballots.

Republican delegates

Democratic delegates, republican results, republicans running, democratic results, democrats running.

Sixteen states and one territory will choose their presidential candidate in contests known as Super Tuesday , when more than a third of delegates will be assigned to determine the Republican presidential nominee. Past results and opinion polls suggest that, by Tuesday night, Donald Trump will have in effect wrapped up the Republican nomination against Nikki Haley , his sole remaining challenger, far before July’s Republican national convention in Milwaukee.

On the Democratic side, President Joe Biden has swept aside token challenges by Congressman Dean Phillips of Minnesota and the self-help author Marianne Williamson and is cruising to the nomination. The lopsided contests and lack of suspense are making Super Tuesday, one of the most celebrated rituals of the American election season, one of the least surprising.

In the Republican primary, 874 of 2,429 total delegates will be up for grabs on Super Tuesday , and the winning candidate will ultimately need 1,215 delegates to capture the nomination.

In the Democratic contest, 1,421 delegates, representing roughly a third of all delegates, will be up for grabs on Super Tuesday, and Biden will need 1,968 delegates to officially win the nomination.

  • Donald Trump

The former US president’s campaign to retake the White House and once again grab his party’s nomination got off to a slow start that was widely mocked. But after decisive wins in Iowa and New Hampshire , his campaign has steadily moved into a position of dominance.

Trump declined to attend any of the Republican debates , has used his court appearances and many legal woes as a rallying cry to mobilize his base, and has run a surprisingly well-organized campaign. His extremist rhetoric, especially around his plans for a second term and the targeting of his political enemies, has sparked widespread fears over the threat to American democracy that his candidacy represents.

His political style during the campaign has not shifted from his previous runs in 2016 and 2020 and, if anything, has become more extreme. Many see this as a result of his political and legal fates becoming entwined, with a return to the Oval Office being seen as Trump’s best chance of nixing his legal problems.

Nikki Haley

The former South Carolina governor and ex-US ambassador to the United Nations under Trump has mostly hewed a fine line between being an alternative to Trump, while not outraging his base with too much direct criticism.

That paid off to some extent as Haley shone in debates and rose past her competitors for the No 2 slot in the Republican race. But after losing by sizable margins in Iowa , New Hampshire and South Carolina , Haley’s chances have dwindled.

Ryan Binkley

Binkley, a Texas businessman, has now dropped out but is still on the ballot. Binkley was a long-shot candidate who is also a pastor at Create church. The self-proclaimed far-right fiscal conservative criticized both Democrats and Republicans for not being able to balance the federal budget, and said he would focus on health costs, immigration reform and a national volunteer movement.

Biden is the likely Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election . He announced his campaign for re-election on 25 April 2023, exactly four years after he announced his previous, successful presidential campaign. While approval for the president remains low, hovering just above 40%, political experts say he is the most likely candidate to defeat Trump. Biden has served in politics for more than five decades and is running on a platform that includes abortion rights, gun reform and healthcare. At 81, he is the oldest president in US history.

Dean Phillips

Dean Phillips, a three-term Democratic congressman from Minnesota, is challenging Biden, saying the next generation should have the opportunity to lead the country. Phillips is the heir to a distilling company and once co-owned a gelato company. He entered public office spurred by fighting back against Trump.

Marianne Williamson

Failed 2020 presidential candidate Marianne Williamson dropped out of the race last month before then resurrecting her long-shot campaign after the Michigan primary. Williamson, an author of self-help books, launched her bid with campaign promises to address climate change and student loan debt. She previously worked as “spiritual leader” of a Michigan Unity church.
