It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. A cat with a number 0.6 is likely to sail 6kts in 10kts wind, a cat with a number of 0.7 is likely to sail at 7kts in 10kts wind. KSP = (Lwl*SA÷D)^0.5*0.5

  3. Mirage 5.5, anyone owned / sailed one.

Since a decent miniton (Lindenburg22) can be bought pretty cheaply, a Mirage 5.5 is worth barely more than the value of the trailer. If it's dirt cheap, has usable sails, needs minimal work, then go for it...you'll have fun. Not worth sink inking much labor or money into though...you'll never get any of it back.

We bought it because of all the space below decks. Our sailing ground is the Gulf of Mexico, and the boat sailed well in seas up to five feet.

The l/b ratio for Mirage 5.5 is 2.50. Slim Wide 73% 0 50 100. Compared with other similar sailboats it is more spacy than 73% of all other designs. It seems that the designer has chosen a slightly more spacy hull design.

  10. Mirage 5.5 with a dagger board

The Mirage seems a lot like the Holder at first. Close to same displacement & sail area. Similar fractional rigs. The Holder is a bit narrower, however, and the keel on it means you got better performance, even if it was a bear to lift. The PHRF rating for a Holder 20 is 180. The Mirage with swing keel rates 246.

  11. Mirage 5.5 / 20 : r/sailing

Expect to bounce around on waves and get wet. Probably a lot of fun racing in warmer climates. Less so for nervous passengers. I think they were considered good training boats, because you'll certain get a 'feel' for how sailboats moves. The keel stays under the hull when up, giving you extra room in the cabin.

Dec 8, 2001. #1. I just bought what seems to be a nice little trailer sailor. She's an 18 ft Mirage built it 1982. I've been having difficulty finding information about this type of boat. 20. Mirage Sailboats -- seeking info

My first boat was a Mirage 5.5. Though smaller than the 26, I found it to be a well built boat. The Mirage 30/32 was on my short list when looking for a bigger boat. 21. The Mirage 5.5 sailboat...

The Mirage 5.5 sailboat I recently acquired is in reasonably good shape for a "free" project boat but does of course require quite a bit of restoration work before it will see the water again.
