About International Lightning Class Association

The Lightning truly excels as an affordable racing boat. The rig is simple but offers sophisticated sail shape controls. The hull features a unique hard chine design that combines the stability that provides sail-carrying power, with flat bottom sections that promote planing. At 700 pounds all up, the trailerable centerboard sloop is tough enough to avoid frequent breakdowns, but light enough to plane wildly on the reaches. Membership is diverse with sailors aged 8 to 80+. Many families sail together at top events and it is common to see females make up at least 40% of competitors.

The Lightning is sailed in more than thirteen countries and in the Pan American Games. A World, Master World and Youth World Championships are held every two years. North American, South American and European Championships are held each year as are innumerable regional and District championships. Major regattas attract some of the finest sailors in the world, but you find Class members friendly and the sailmakers’ complete tuning guides helpful at getting you up to speed in a hurry.

The International Lightning Class Association is one of the oldest and best organized class associations in sailboat racing. Its primary purpose is to serve its membership, preserve the integrity of the Lightning and provide high-quality competitive events. In addition, the Lightning Class publishes monthly e-blasts and a quarterly newsletter Flashes with up-to-date regatta news, boat brokerage and ideas on how to get the most out of your Lightning. The professionally managed association and dedicated volunteers are always on hand to assist both current and potential members.

If you’re looking for a boat you can be proud to sail, one that offers dinghy handling with the performance of a sport boat, a refined design that’s free of fads, complete with the technology of today for both racing and day sailing – look at the Lightning.

lightning sailboat racing

Without Compromising Either One The Lightning, a 19 foot trailerable centerboard sloop, was originally designed by Sparkman & Stephens as an affordable family day-sailor and racing boat. She has evolved into one of the most popular and competitive one-design racing classes in the world. Awarded ISAF International Class status, the Lightning is sailed in more than 13 countries and in the Pan American Games, and the class provides a professionally-managed association that is among the largest in all of one-design sailing. The Lightning’s rig is simple, but offers sophisticated sail shape controls. The hull features a unique hard chine design that combines the stability that provides sail-carrying power, with flat bottom sections that promote planing. The International Lightning Class Association protects the boat’s design and licenses custom and private builders to build boats under its administration. A list of Lightning builders is available from the ILCA upon request.

Dinghy Responsiveness, Sportboat Performance

The Best Of Both Worlds Whether racing or daysailing, the Lightning offers a combination of performance and stability that eludes most one-designs. The Lightning’s hard chine and 130 lb centerboard give her the stability and power of a small keel boat going to weather in strong winds and allow her to carry a very large spinnaker for breathtaking offwind rides. There’s room in the cockpit for two couples or a family to daysail, but the Lightning is easy to ramp launch and light enough to trailer with ease. In the event of a capsize, she can be righted and sailed dry by her crew.

Refined Design, Toda

The Best Of Both Worlds Whether you’re more interested in how a boat looks or how it behaves, it’s hard to beat the Lightning. The Class maintains an attitude that promotes conservative innovation, making the boat faster, safer and more maintenance free, while keeping prices affordable. Most Lightnings built in the last 25 years can be made competitive and it’s not uncommon to see them winning races right along with new ones. In fact the 1995 World Champion sailed a boat built in 1969! Modern Lightnings are built in foam-cored fiberglass with stainless steel centerboards and black anodized aluminum spars. The world’s top sailmakers give the class their best efforts. In short, there are enough controls to keep the most technically inclined happy, but it’s good tactics, boat-handling and hiking that win races.

The Best Competition In The World Or A Way To Get Away From It

The Best Of Both Worlds

Ted Turner, Dennis Conner, Ken Read, Dave Dellenbaugh, Dave Curtis, Bruce Goldsmith, Tom Allen, Neal Fowler, Steve Benjamin, Ched Proctor, Bill Shore, Greg Fisher, Andy Horton are just a few of the rock stars who have competed in the Lightning. After more than 60 years and more than 15,000 boats it’s easy to find a regatta when you want to. But whether you’re interested in serious racing or you just want to go for a joyride with the family, you’ll find what you’re looking for in the Lightning. Club Racer Or International Icon

The Lightning truly excels as a racing boat. It requires a wide range of different skills, both tactical and technical. At 700 pounds all up, the boat is tough enough to avoid frequent breakdowns, but light enough to plane wildly on the reaches. A World Championship is held every two years. North American, South American and European Championships are held each year as are innumerable regional and District championships. Major regattas attract some of the finest sailors in the world, but you find class members friendly and the sailmakers’ complete tuning guides helpful at getting you up to speed in a hurry.

The International Lightning Class Association

Welcome To Our World

The ILCA is one of the oldest and best organized class associations in sailboat racing. Its primary purpose is to serve its membership, preserve the integrity of the Lightning and provide high-quality competitive events. In addition, the ILCA publishes a monthly newsletter Lightning Flashes with up-to-date regatta news, boat brokerage and ideas on how to get the most out of your Lightning. An annual Yearbook, containing many illustrated articles, reports on major championships, fleet reports and a complete association mailing list, is also published. The professional ILCA staff is always on hand to assist both current and potential members. If you’re looking for a boat you can be proud to sail, one that offers dinghy handling with the performance of a sportboat, a refined design that’s free of fads, complete with the technology of today for both racing and daysailing

America’s Cup defender America3

The Top 10 Things I Like About The Lightning: 1. There’s Lightning racing almost everywhere. 2. Some of the best sailors in the world sail the Lightning. 3. Lightnings are available from more than one high-quality builder. 4. Lightnings even 20 years old are still competitive. 5. The boat is one of the best crew trainers on the water today. 6. The class is not so strict as to discourage experimentation which makes the boat faster and easier to sail. 7. The Lightning has interested the finest sailmakers in the world so the sails and the tuning guides look great and are easy to use. 8. The Lightning is a very roomy boat for daysailing. 9. Lightning sailors sail hard, but they’re not too cutthroat – someone’s always ready to answer questions. 10. The class management is as good as you’ll find in one-design sailing. For more information about the International Lightning or to arrange a test sail in your area, call or write to the address listed below.

Family Sailing, World Class Racing... Best Of Both Worlds

The Lightning, a 19-foot trailerable centerboard sloop, was designed by Sparkman & Stephens as an affordable family day sailor and racing boat. The Lightning has evolved into one of the most popular and competitive one-design racing classes in the world. After 15,500 boats the International Lightning offers the toughest competition in one design!

The Lightning's rig is simple, but offers sophisticated sail shape controls. The hull features a hard chine design that combines the stability that provides sail-carrying power, with flat bottom sections that promote planing. New boats are being built in good numbers by two quality builders providing a stable supply of new and used boats. The boat is normally raced with a 3 person crew but in local club racing 2 or 4 person teams are accommodated. The Houston fleet has been building in recent year and has been the largest one design fleet at a number of HYC regattas in 2012 and 2013. The Lightning Texas District Championship held at HYC for the last 3 years has had 15-20 boats competing.

image

Lightning teams represent a wide spectrum of sailors and include National One Design Champions, families, sailing new comers, juniors (Ragnots) and experienced club racers. There is room for everyone who wants to come out and enjoy the physical and technical challenge of sailing a Lightning.

HYC recently hosted the very successful 2012 Lightning North American Championship with 55 boats and a prior event for the 2012 Women’s, Juniors and Masters Championship.

The local Lightning fleet program is built around HYC hosted regattas and series racing with additional Lightning fleet practice, tuning and race days. Some of the fleet travel to Southwest Circuit events and other regional/National/World events.

Get in touch …. We would like to welcome you to Houston Lightning sailing!

The Wisdom of Augie Diaz

Augie Diaz at the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series in St. Petersburg

National Sailing Hall of Fame inductee, Snipe and Star world champion, and PanAm games medalist Augie Diaz has been getting up to speed in the Lightning, another classic one-design that continues to produce generations of smart, fast and technical sailors. On the first day of the 2024 Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series in St. Petersburg we staged an “Ask Augie” session with Lightning sailors as we waited out a postponement. We invited a few to ask away, but dozens lined up at the chance to quiz a legend. Here’s what we gleaned in less than 20 minutes of wonderful advice from the legend himself.

What’s your favorite thing in a crew?

That the crew gives me as much information as possible, and never gets insulted when I don’t do what they’re telling me to do.

What’s your routine?

Generally, I’m late, So I try to go early. But I just try to get my mindset ready, look at the weather, get a weather update, and then try to get to the park in time to make sure my tune is good. And just to not be rushed. Because generally, if I’m late, then I’m rushed. Then I’m not relaxed.

What is the breakfast of champions?

I like a good breakfast because you have to have something in your body for the day. Generally what I like to have is just some eggs, and maybe some protein. This morning, I went off track a little bit because my buddy Enrique Quintero made some bacon. Bacon is always great, but why is bacon so great and then it’s bad for you? So, I like to stay away from bacon. But generally, I get toast, eggs and protein.

Favorite boat: Stars or Snipes?

I get this asked all the time: What’s my favorite boat? And it’s a very simple answer: It’s the last one I sailed.

You seem to sail with light women? How do you make the boat go so fast and the big breeze?

Generally, I sail with girls that are used to hiking; like those that are Snipe sailors. And those girls are pretty used to hiking. And then I have a steady flow of discussion that goes like this: Flat, flat, flat. I just keep saying that, and so it works.

What is the best and most fair weather to sail?

I like the breeze. I liked it all my life. And even at my age, now that it’s getting harder, I still like the breeze a lot. I just think that when you have a better feel of the boat and breeze, the boat talks to you a little bit more. So, I really enjoy that part of it. So I would say breeze. Breeze on.

If you get caught in a tight lane, and you don’t want to bail out of it and you really need to hold your position, any tricks on keeping your position?

That happens to me a lot because I’m not a great starter. So I’m usually in a position where I’m kind of in a tight lane, and what I try to do is make sure that before the race, I have what I call a high mode. I will announce it: “high mode,” and a high mode generally means we’re pulling in the sheets a little bit tighter. And then we’re being careful not to over trim the backstay because when you over trim the backstay you lose a little leech. For me, height is about how well that leech is working. So, I’ll say: “high mode, high mode, high mode, I need height,” and then we pretty much all do what we need to do. Steering has a lot to do with it. If you get caught too high, that’s bad, because then you start going sideways. So, you have to really balance it where you trim in, you keep your height, and you just live.

When you’re racing and you feel slow, what’s the first thing you do to change?

What I try to do is ease. Generally, I’m a pincher, so when I’m going slow, the first thing I do is I try to ease the sails a little bit, and try to put the bow down and that always gives you a good feel for what you know for what you have to do next. So, I think to be disciplined about feeling slow, then you ease the sails out a little bit, and put the bow down a little bit and get flow. Because the biggest problem for pinchers is that you lose flow on the blades. And not just not only the blades in the water, but also on your foils above, the sails. It’s all about flow. It’s like flying.

What about going downwind?

I generally end up heading up because when I’m going slow I feel like I’m too low. And that’s generally what I try to do is try to keep a feel for what the angle should be, which is really hard in the Lightning. The legacy guys like Debbie Probst, Jody Starck, Ched Proctor, they know this stuff instinctively. So, for me, I’ve had to work on it, and it’s tough.

What is the first thing you think about when you have a poor start? If you have a post start other than a general recall. Other than hoping for a general recall?

I have had a lot of practice at this, so for me it begins before the actual start. I try to get to a place where, if I mess up the start, I’m going to have a good exit. Generally, that means you’re a little bit further up the line closer to a committee boat. But I don’t panic. I try not to panic, I do panic, actually. But I try not to panic. Because my tendency is to try to clear out from a bad start and I try to clear too fast. And sometimes I use the verbiage with my team: “We need to live here until it clears out.” And if you wait just 30, 45 seconds, and you’re in bad air, you’re hurting, you know, but you allow things to clear out a little bit behind you, then it gets a lot easier. It’s harder in the Lightning than in other classes because in a Lightning we sail tighter. There’s a lot of good people. And you end up having less of an opportunity to clear yourself.

We’re starting a U32 initiative to get more post collegiate sailors into the Lightning class; what’s your advice for encouraging more people to join the Lightning class?

I think you’ve got to invite them to get on the boat and go sailing. I think that will get a lot of people right off the bat. I think this issue of being able to go fast in a Lightning is very critical. I think you have to leverage the class stalwarts, like Ched, David Starck and Jodie and Tommy Stark, and really make it so that when people come into the class, they get accepted like I was. It’s hard because it takes time. It takes a commitment, but I think the class can do it. It’s not a problem, but I think it’s a step in the right direction. We’re doing that also very effectively in the Snipes, and it’s all about having fun. Our racing here in the Lightning is very similar to collegiate racing; it’s super tactical. And this is something that all these college kids come out of college from super tactical situations. When they start sailing J/70s or something like that, those are not tactical boats because you can’t tack a lot, and downwind you have to go to the corners. The secret to our class is the way we have a lot of fun and how tactical it is. In the end it’s fun. It’s like playing chess and lifting weights at the same time.

What advice do you have for a team who is just starting out together just starting to sail together and maybe have not sailed together before?

Communication is key, and having a discussion before you get on the boat as to who’s doing what. I use a lot of mental visualization exercises. And I do that on the fly. I did that when I was in high school and I thought it was daydreaming. But it wasn’t daydreaming. I was actually practicing in my mind. But really, communication before you jump into the boat, I think is super important. I’ve gone as far as setting up in a living room, where you have two benches and simulate a cockpit and you walk through your maneuvers, because the Lightning is pretty tricky in terms of your maneuvers. So, that’s what I would recommend: doing a lot of communication and a lot of mental visualization prior to getting on the boat. And then of course sailing as much as you can together. That’s always key.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

One of the most popular one-design classes in the US since the 1940’s. But fleets also exist in other parts of the world. Although originally designed for wood planked construction, nearly all boats since the early 1960’s have been built of fiberglass. Ballast above is max weight of centerboard.

Restoration of Skaneateles Lightning #167

The Lightning sailboat was designed by the Naval Architectural firm of Sparkman & Stephens in response to a request from John and George Barnes, owners of Skaneateles Boats, Inc. The Barnes brothers were interested in building a one-design sailboat which could be used both for racing as well as family day sailing. The two firms collaborated closely on the design of the sailboat over a two-year period, and prototype Lightning #1 (now part of the watercraft Collection at Mystic Seaport Museum) was built in 1938. The boat received an enthusiastic response from the yachting world, and production began in earnest the following year.

Two men who used short-barreled rifles to kill three wild burros in the Mojave Desert in 2021 pleaded guilty on Monday to federal charges, prosecutors said.

Under a plea deal, prosecutors agreed to recommend probation rather than prison time for the pair, who face up to 10 years behind bars just for their gun offenses.

Cameron John Feikema, 36, of Yorba Linda, and Christopher James Arnet, 32, of Loveland, Colo., each pleaded guilty to a felony count of possession of an unregistered firearm and a misdemeanor count of maliciously causing the death of a burro on public lands as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s office.

Late on Nov. 5, 2021, the two men donned tactical gear that included ballistic helmets equipped with night vision goggles and drove in Arnet’s truck into the desert just north of Yermo in San Bernardino County, court records show. They were armed with unregistered short-barreled rifles that prosecutors described as similar in style to assault rifles.

New clues may shed light on killings of wild burros in Mojave Desert

At least 42 wild burro carcasses with gunshot wounds were found in various states of decomposition along the Interstate 15 freeway corridor between Halloran Springs, Calif., and Primm, Nev., in the summer of 2019.

Feb. 3, 2024

Around 1 a.m., prosecutors say, the men collectively fired at least 13 shots, striking and killing three wild burros.

“One burro was shot near its spine towards its hind legs, which paralyzed the burro’s hind legs and caused the animal severe pain before it died,” the U.S. attorney’s office wrote in a statement. The bullet removed from that burro was fired from Arnet’s rifle, prosecutors said.

As part of their plea agreement with prosecutors, Feikema and Arnet agreed to turn over their rifles, more than 4,000 rounds of ammunition, night vision goggles and other tactical gear, according to court documents.

Both men face a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for the firearm charge and up to one year in federal prison for killing the burros. However, as part of their plea agreements, prosecutors are expected to seek no more than three years of probation, a stint of home detention and a fine of no more than $2,000 for each man, according to documents filed in court. They are scheduled to be sentenced on July 8.

More than 40 wild burros slaughtered in the Southern California desert; reward offered

The burro carcasses with gunshot wounds have been found along Interstate 15 near the California-Nevada state line.

Aug. 23, 2019

The slaying of wild burros , which are protected under the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971, has been happening for years.

At least 42 wild burro carcasses with gunshot wounds were found in various states of decomposition along Interstate 15 between Baker, Calif., and Primm, Nev., in the summer of 2019.

Officials with the Bureau of Land Management called it one of the largest killings of its kind on public land managed by the agency. The search for the individuals responsible is ongoing, according to the agency.

In January, BLM announced it was offering a $10,000 reward for information that could assist its investigation. The agency also identified two vehicles of interest in the killings of 19 of the burros, whose carcasses were found Aug. 13, 2019, the agency said in a news release at the time.

Authorities have asked anyone with information about the crime to call (909) 987-5005.

The best times to buy furniture in Elektrostal' to get the best deals:

  • For indoor furniture, the best times to buy and save are in January, July, and during holiday weekends. Retailers often offer discounts during these periods to clear out old stock before introducing new styles in February and August. Similarly, Presidents Day and Labor Day weekends are great for sales.
  • Outdoor furniture is more affordable during the summer months, especially around the 4th of July when many retailers offer discounts.

If you are planning a home remodeling project and intend to buy new furniture, it’s essential to time your purchases strategically. Buying furniture too early might lead to storage issues and increased chances of damage during the remodeling process. On the other hand, waiting too long could leave you with limited options and potential delays in completing your project.
