Riverboat on the Potomac

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We were looking for a nice meal and there are not a lot of choices on the beach. We flipped a coin and landed here. Let's say up front that our server Heather was as cute as she could be. She was flying around and... waiting on several tables and tried her best. Signs on the table announced that they were short staffed and be patient, and we were. I ordered the large prime rib, salad and the small baked potatoes. The prime rib was huge, tasty and perfectly cooked. My salad was good but I was not told it was an upcharge to replace a side with it. The potatoes came with melted butter which was melted margarine and not good. She had the crab stuffed shrimp, hush puppies and fries. The shrimp were not great and the rest were good. An uneven performance at best but one of the few places to get a meal that doesn't involve a diner. We did have a nice view of the water. More

They call themselves a casino because they have keno and horse bets. If you are thinking slots or cards you are way off base. Most people there are over 60 ish and look to be regulars. Great bloody marys but not so great food. Nothing... to do there but watch a bunch of keno and horse races on tv. More

Hi wyattdeb, We consider ourselves to be a casino because we have a public room where gambling occurs, which is the definition of a casino or gambling house. We agree the Bloody Marys are delicious! We hope to see you again soon for a game... More

We probably go to Riverboat for lunch every 2 months. You can't beat the view from the porch overlooking the Potomac. They are always understaffed so service is hit or miss and there seems to be a lot of turn over. We rarely see the... same waiter or waitress a second time. The food is so-so, not bad, not great. I find that it is inconsistent also. Like the wait staff I suspect the kitchen staff turns over frequently since things are often prepared and presented differently from visit to visit. If you want ok food and nice view and are not in a hurry...give it a try. More

Very Disappointed with service and food today. Drove from Fredericksburg to come enjoy a nice meal only to be charged $20 for just a child to eat. Ordered hush puppies and a dozen chicken wings as our appetizer. The butter was rock hard. Asked for... melted butter which never came as well as a refill that never came. The chicken wings where cold in the middle. When our food arrived the crab stuffed flounder wasn’t even room temperature and the crab stuffed shrimp was lukewarm. When the chicken wings came out cold I initially thought it was the cook’s fault. But as the evening went by our waitress mentioned our food was ready but it didn’t bring our food out for several minutes. I also watched a cook bring food out and set it on the bar only for the waitress to take several minutes to take it to the table. Have to say not pleased about driving from Fredericksburg to Colonial Beach to spend $20 on 3 drinks, an order of hush puppies, Kraft Mac and cheese and a bun less hot dog. More

I have found the food to be small portions and overpriced. Service is slow, and service is worse; only because they only have two girls working the dining room, bar and etc. for about 100 people. Recently had the wings, growly overcooked and difficult to... chew. I had to send them back as they were that bad. The nacho platter was good. They did away, to steam line the menu with the shrimp basket, which was excellent. More

This place is unique. Enter the building in Virginia, take ten steps and you are over the water and in Maryland. You can bet the ponies and play Keno in the Maryland side. The Virginia entrance has but one Virginia scratch off machine. I know... they tried to get slots installed but locals voted it down. ‘Tis a shame. We went for the food over the water and it was fantastic. Both of us got grilled scallops with cheese and they were great. Highly recommend this place for the food for sure. More

We just spent Friday and Saturday, Dec. 29 and 30, eating lunch and dinner at the new Riverboat. My parents came to visit form Shelby,NC and we all had a grand time. It took a long time to rebuild "THE BOAT" but it came back... better then ever! Thank you to all the owner, employees and just what a great time. Shirley and Catfish Lee More

I went to the Riverboat last night with my friends to celebrate my birthday early so everyone could come. We sat at the bar and had a great time. They had a good amount draft beers and a couple different ones I've never had before... like Goose IPA. The bartender was courteous, speedy and knew her stuff. We order a bunch of the finger foods and they were delicious. As we were leaving we grabbed a couple handles of whiskey and bourbon from there in-restaurant liquor store. It was a great way to spend a birthday. More

Went to the High Tides 100 yards away first but was invisible to them. So we went to the Riverboat where we sat at the bar , ate chicken tenders that were great. The bar maid was great. Music on the tv in front of... us (instead of sports.) Glad the High Tides didn't want to wait us. More

Waited at least 20 minutes for a waitress to come over to us, even though there was only one other table occupied. The crab balls had so much old bay seasoning on them that I sent them back. My daughter's fish was also way overseasoned,... as was her shrimp. Way over priced and just plain bad food and service!!!! More

Food was overpriced, limited selection, not prepared as ordered or in accordance with the menu, filet mignon was tough and had a toothpick hidden in it and service was slow. I tried the place because I purchased a coupon for it. The coupon was supposed... to be same as cash yet they put restrictions on it. Atmosphere leaves much to be desired, it is definitively tailored more to gambling than dining. More

While it might be a good idea to have OTB, this place needs help. We couldn't bring ourselves to give them our dinner business. The servers are rude and don't seem to know which one is waiting on which table leading to confusion and lots... of interruptions. Our waitress had no idea what kind of beers they had on tap. We are very sorry to hear about your experience in our restaurant. Our customers are our number one priority. The behavior you observed is not typical of the experience at Riverboat and most certainly not what we teach our staff. We will use this opportunity... More

We went to see the comedy show and it was excellent ! However, we didn't eat before we came because we were going to have dinner there - BIG MISTAKE! My husband ordered a drink in the bar area while we chatted with the comedians... and I didn't order anything because I was going to wait until we went in and sat down. We were sitting in there for about 45 minutes and no one took our order so I got up and went to get a menu . Still no one came over .The 3 servers walked around us , beside us, and in between but NEVER took our order! We were there for 2 1/2 hours!!!! No one ever asked if we wanted anything! Had it not been for the comedians we would have left after 1/2 hour of the lack of service. We have been to alot of shows around the country and have never had this happen. My suggestion would to be get a wait staff that is good for business not what you had last night ! We will not be coming back.Very disappointed ! More

Hi Usandthebeach, We are very sorry to hear about your negative experience. We will address this issue with our wait staff. Thank you for providing us with your feedback. Best, Penny F., Owner

So I went there today, and the view is great however, there's no staff at the door to assist with seating. I actually had to ask. So once I sat down it took forever for a server to notice. I ordered a pasta special and... waited 30 minutes for it. What came out was a pasta that had clearly been sitting for a while, was reheated and not even fresh. Even worse it looked like it was made and mixed with the sauce. The presentation of the meal was terrible I will submit a picture of it. For a 30 minute wait on pasta I expect some sort of a presentation and a fresh meal. Anyways the manager came by and gave it to me for half price because quite frankly I was afraid to order anything else for fear of receiving something that was just as bad or not fresh. How hard is it to mess up pasta? The place is in dire need of remodeling the carpet is dirty and the overall decor a drab, only the view saves it. More

What kind of person puts that much money into a business, but cares less about what would make their customers have a better dining experience. Customers walk into this huge building with no person to greet them and show them their dining options. They have... no sweet tea, though so many customers want it. They offer no drink specials on holidays that most bars partake in, Penny, the owner, cares only about the gamblers, and the gamblers alone. She is not open to new ideas that would increase her business and sales. She has the food there because you need to sell a certain about of food in order to sell the alcohol. Nor, does she want decent staff. If you are not sitting at the bar in your work unniform after you clock out, then you do not fit in. , NO CLASS!! More

Major Sewage Line Fails Near Potomac River in Great Falls

Fairfax tests wells, positive results for coliform and e. coli.

Sewage flows in DC Water’s Manhole #31 in Great Falls. Over the night of Tuesday, February 13, the site experienced a substantial amount of rain. By Wednesday, February 14, the pipeline further failed, and the eroded area expanded substantially. The site is located approximately a football field length from the Potomac River and within the proximity of 18 private wells.

By Mercia Hobson

Wednesday, March 6, 2024

The DC Water and Sewer Authority's Potomac Interceptor sewer line at Manhole #31, approximately 400 feet (just more than a football field) from the Potomac River, and varying proximity to 18 private wells in Great Falls, 158 feet to 2,755 feet, failed on or before Feb. 12.

As part of its emergency response plan, DC Water immediately activated an on-site bypass pumping contractor. On Tuesday, Feb. 13, "the site experienced a substantial amount of rain," and on Feb. 14, the pipeline again failed. "The eroded area expanded substantially," DC Water reported. The utility company provided the words as captions for slides presented by the Fairfax County Health Department at the Feb. 27 virtual Great Falls Community Meeting.

"I recognize that DC Water was handling certain things, but they don't report to you, our county staff, and I do," said Fairfax County Supervisor Jimmy Bierman (Dranesville) at the meeting. "I'm not very happy with DC Water right now for a number of reasons… . I felt like we needed to have a follow-up community meeting and that we needed to bring in the experts that we have in the county to try and give you as much information as possible."

The utility company collects sewage for several adjoining localities in Maryland and Virginia, including Fairfax County, transporting about 60 million gallons of wastewater daily via the Potomac Interceptor to the Potomac Pumping Station in Washington, DC. Flows from the pump station are then sent to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment before discharge into the Potomac River. DC Water provided the updated statements in the captions of photographs shown as slides at the Fairfax County Health Department's community meeting.

The broken pipe was part of a larger project to upgrade and rehabilitate the Potomac Interceptor.

Concerns and speculations had spread among the close-knit Great Falls community, particularly after the Fairfax County Health Department issued a boil-water advisory to potentially affected households. The county conducted bacteriological tests from Saturday, Feb. 17, to Sunday, Feb. 25, excluding testing on Feb. 20. Coliform bacteria were detected in 11 of the 77 test results of the 18 impacted wells.

Breaking it down further by well occurrence, Fairfax County reported that four of the 18 private wells tested positive for coliform organisms, with one positive for E. coli. Wells #3 and #8 tested positive for coliform bacteria once each; well #4 tested positive three times; and well #9, the furthest away from Manhole #13, tested positive six times.

Questions arose about evaluations of well water quality, safety precautions, well disinfection with response options, how the contamination occurred, and whether there was an impact on the Potomac.

Seamus Mooney, coordinator for Fairfax County's Department of Resources and Emergency Management, provided an overview of the repairs from the DC Water perspective. Mooney said DC Water installed four pumps and was bypassing pumping with a fifth pump installed and pumping water back into Manhole #31. The process had been ongoing for five days, with DC Water moving slowly "to ensure the pumps can handle the capacity." According to Mooney, DC Water was to decide when to insert the plug into the line at the end of the week to begin the dewatering process.

Christopher Harrington, P.E., director of Fairfax County's Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, presented findings from the hydrogeologist’s report and an overview of what the lab reports on the well testing indicated. Other issues might be with the private wells or homes' plumbing.

Harrington stated that while the county's Department of Public Works does not directly regulate or monitor groundwater, he was there to assist the Health Department because, as a professional, he had over three decades of experience with water quality and investigation across multiple aquifer systems.

Going through several slides, Harrington described Manhole 31 as being north of the wells and having a higher elevation gradient than the Potomac interceptor. "Water flows downhill unless it is under pressure," Harrington explained. He pointed to the 18 well locations and stated there was no reason to believe any sewage traveled over land.

Local patterns indicate that the groundwater gradient was flowing towards the excavation rather than from it to the wells. Regarding what could be going on underground — bedding planes, faults, or fractures in the bedrock that could potentially convey water — Harrington stated that the pressure gradient in the bedrock beneath the excavation site is believed to be going downhill toward the excavation.

According to Harrington, E. coli in water samples is a good indicator of bacteria because it indicates fecal contamination. The sewage that would have filled Manhole 31 contained hundreds of thousands of colony-forming units of E. coli bacteria per deciliter. When they examined the data, they found only one well had a few samples with E. coli indicator bacteria. Furthermore, given that the groundwater flow is heading north toward the Potomac, some of the intervening wells should have detected E. coli, but they did not.

"I can say that there is no conclusive evidence that Manhole # 31 sewage contaminated these wells," Harrington said.

Dr. Param Dubarry, deputy director for Medical Services, Fairfax County Health Department, discussed coliforms and explained that they are found in soil and indicate fecal contamination. E. coli is a specific type of coliform that can cause serious illness. The Health Department advises homes with positive coliform and E. coli tests to boil water and disinfect their wells. The department will issue new letters outlining these recommendations.

Dubarry emphasized the importance of retesting two weeks later to ensure that the biological contamination had been removed. He also said that pipes could have biofilm buildup. Dubarry considered that it is possible that in homes with coliform, the septic system is not functioning optimally and may add additional contaminants to the environment. "It's a good idea also to check your septic system."

Fairfax County reports more than  15,000 homes and businesses rely on groundwater wells for their domestic water supply.

On Tuesday, March 5, John Lisle, vice president of marketing and communications at DC Water, said Fairfax County's Feb. 27 presentation at the Great Falls Community meeting was comparable to DC Water's previous community meetings held the week before.

“We had a hydrogeologist present his findings from his assessment, and they were very similar to what Mr. Harrington presented [on Feb. 27].  The conclusion was the same. There was no evidence that the pipe's failure had compromised the water quality of those homes.”

Lisle clarified that the broken pipe was part of a larger Manhole 31 Project to upgrade and rehabilitate the Potomac Interceptor (PI).

Lisle explained that a sinkhole formed when dirt entered a pipe, potentially blocking the flow and causing it to expand into a sinkhole. According to Lisle, DC Water conducted all water quality testing at the homes until the transition to Fairfax County last week. DC Water informed residents of positive coliform and E. coli test results in their water supply, and Fairfax County provided guidance on boiling water as a precaution.

According to  DC Water,  it is rehabilitating 140 feet of the 54-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe downstream from Manhole 31, replacing  200 feet of 54-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe immediately upstream of Manhole 31, replacing Manhole 31 and demolishing the old existing piping as part of the Manhole 31 Project, DC Water. “The old manhole is very close to the new one, Lisle added.

The Potomac Interceptor (PI) is an essential part of DC Water's sewer system that serves Virginia's Loudoun and Fairfax counties and Montgomery County, Maryland. These locations send sewage to the Potomac Pumping Station in DC via the Potomac Interceptor. The Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant treats discharge from the Pumping Station. DC Water is assessing the PI and has several Capital Improvement Projects to rehabilitate defective segments.

Virginia governor decries ‘colossal mistake’ as legislature deals blow to his plan to steal 2 of DC’s sports teams

Glenn Youngkin

Work on compromise budget legislation Virginia lawmakers will take up later this week is complete, and the bill does not include language enabling a proposed relocation by the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals to Alexandria, top lawmakers said Thursday.

The development does not necessarily mean the end of the road for Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s plan to lure the teams across the Potomac River with a $2 billion development district featuring a new arena. But it deals yet  another blow  for the proposal, a top priority for Youngkin.

In a news conference at the foot of the Capitol steps, the governor said he believed the Democratic-led General Assembly was poised to make “a colossal mistake.” He sought to make the case that they should reconsider and restore the project terms to the budget before advancing it to his desk.

“They have a chance to stand up and do what’s right. They have a chance to assess this one-of-a-kind, first-of-its-kind economic development opportunity on the merits of the opportunity. And I will again repeat again that the merits are truly, truly amazing,” he said.

Democratic Sen. L. Louise Lucas of Portsmouth, the top Senate negotiator and a sharp critic of Youngkin, stood on the Capitol portico, looking down on the governor and sometimes smiling as he spoke. She told reporters earlier that she remains firmly opposed to the deal, in large part because of its reliance on bonds backed by the state and city governments.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell said he objected to trying to include the arena project in the budget because the process does not provide a full opportunity for debate. Surovell also blasted Youngkin for what he called the governor’s unwillingness to consider some of the top priorities of Democrats.

“This is a process that requires compromise, and so far the governor has made very little indication that he’s willing to compromise,” Surovell said.

While the full text of the budget bill was not immediately available to the public, both Lucas and Democratic Del. Luke Torian, who chairs the House Appropriations Committee and led negotiations for his chamber, confirmed that the arena-related provisions had been removed from the legislation, which lawmakers are expected to take up Saturday.

The legislation had been in the hands of a conference committee — a small, bipartisan group of legislators that’s been meeting behind closed doors — after the two chambers  passed competing budget bills  earlier this session and then rejected both.

Torian, who had sponsored a standalone version of legislation to underpin the deal that was defeated earlier, said he was “perhaps a little disappointed” the language didn’t make it into the budget.

“But that’s the nature of trying to govern here in the Commonwealth,” he said.

The budget was the last remaining vehicle for the necessary legislation to pave the way for the deal because Torian’s bill and another standalone version failed earlier this session. Lucas refused to give them a hearing in her committee.

Going forward, once lawmakers send the governor a budget, he could pursue an amendment and restore the project language, or he could call a special session on the issue.

Legislators could also reject the budget bill and send it back to the conference committee for further consideration.

Youngkin and entrepreneur Ted Leonsis, an entrepreneur and the ultrawealthy CEO of the teams’ parent company — Monumental Sports and Entertainment —  announced in December  that they had reached an understanding on a deal to relocate the Capitals and Wizards.

The company had no immediate comment on Thursday’s development.

At least one D.C. official welcomed the snafu in Virginia and expressed hope that the teams would remain in the district.

“The Arena and Monumental Sports have been partners with the District for almost 30 years, and a great asset to downtown,” D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson said in a statement. “As a deal in Virginia remains uncertain, the Council continues to be ready to welcome Monumental Sports’ change of mind.”

The plan calls for the creation of a $2 billion development, partly financed by public money, in the Potomac Yard section of Alexandria that would include an arena, practice facility and corporate headquarters for Monumental, plus a separate performing arts venue, all just miles from Capital One Arena,  where the teams currently play  in Washington.

Under the proposed terms of the deal, Monumental and the city of Alexandria would contribute some upfront funds, but about $1.5 billion would be financed through bonds issued by a governmental entity that lawmakers were expected to set up this year.

The bonds were envisioned to be repaid through a mix of revenues from the project, including a ticket tax, parking fees, concession taxes, income taxes levied on athletes performing at the arena and naming rights from the district. Proponents say those sources will more than cover the debt, creating new revenues for the city and state in the project’s first year. But about a third of the financing, under the terms lawmakers were expected to vote on, would be backed by the “moral obligation” of the city and state governments, meaning taxpayers could be on the hook if the project revenues don’t come through as expected.

Youngkin, a private equity executive before he ran for public office, emphasized that the state would not be putting in upfront cash and that revenues that “otherwise will not be here” would help finance the deal. And he warned that the way the Senate has handled the deal could put the state’s business-friendly reputation at risk.

Lucas dismissed that concern and said she had serious concerns about the idea of “putting taxpayers’ money behind the project of a billionaire.”

She acknowledged that her move to block the arena could damage some of Democrats’ top legislative priorities, like  a measure  establishing marijuana retail sales. But she said she thought the trade-off was worth it.

“I just stood firm on what I believe in my heart to be in the best interest of the Commonwealth. And that was just to say no to the Glenn dome,” she said using a nickname she’s given the proposed arena.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A top Democratic Virginia lawmaker vowed Wednesday to keep language enabling a proposed relocation by the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals to Alexandria out of the state budget lawmakers will take up later this week.

Sen. L. Louise Lucas, who chairs the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee and is the top negotiator for her chamber in pending budget talks, reiterated her opposition to the project in an interview and said it could not make it into the spending plan without her support.

“Based on the information I have, it's just not a good deal for the Commonwealth," she said. “And I'm just not yielding.”

But barring some turnabout, it deals yet another blow for the proposal, one of the governor's top priorities.

The budget was the last remaining vehicle for the necessary legislation after Lucas effectively killed other standalone versions earlier this session by refusing to grant them a hearing.

CNN’s State of the Union quiz: How well do you know the history of the yearly presidential address?

By Paul LeBlanc and Zachary B. Wolf, CNN

March 6, 2024

Is the president required to give an annual State of the Union address?

riverboat on the potomac photos

The Constitution requires that the president “shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.” But it does not require a speech, and it does not require that a “State of the Union” be given each year.

Early State of the Union reports were frequently delivered in writing. Also, when presidents address Congress during their first year in office, usually not long after their inauguration, it is frequently called an address to a joint session of Congress rather than a State of the Union address.

Which president delivered the first televised State of the Union speech?

riverboat on the potomac photos

Truman’s 1947 address was the first to be televised. Eighteen years later, Lyndon B. Johnson would begin the tradition of delivering the address in prime time.

What event led to the first postponement of a State of the Union address?

riverboat on the potomac photos

The explosion of NASA’s Challenger shuttle on January 28, 1986, killed all seven crew members onboard and shook the American public. President Ronald Reagan had been scheduled to deliver his State of the Union address the evening of the disaster, but he decided to postpone the speech.

For more than 100 years, beginning with President Thomas Jefferson, the State of the Union was delivered by the White House to Congress as a written report. Which president restarted the tradition of delivering an annual speech to lawmakers?

riverboat on the potomac photos

Wilson was trying to bring the president closer to the public when he decided to restart the tradition of delivering the State of the Union as a speech rather than as a written report.

Which president was first to call his annual speech to Congress a “State of the Union” address?

Roosevelt was the first president to refer to the annual address to Congress as the “ State of the Union .” That name didn’t become official, though, until 1947 under Truman.

Which president has delivered the shortest State of the Union address to date?

riverboat on the potomac photos

Washington ‘s 1790 address was only 833 words and is believed to have lasted less than 10 minutes.

What’s the term for a guest mentioned by the president during a State of the Union address?

riverboat on the potomac photos

The first time a president is thought to have used a guest as a part of his speech came in 1982, when Ronald Reagan recognized Lenny Skutnik , a hero who jumped into the Potomac River to help rescue survivors of an airplane crash. Recognizing extraordinary Americans at the State of the Union address is now a common occurrence.

Which pair of presidents never delivered State of the Union addresses?

riverboat on the potomac photos

Both Harrison and Garfield died in office before they had a chance to deliver a State of the Union address. Harrison died from disease, while Garfield was assassinated .

In what decade was the “designated survivor” role introduced?

riverboat on the potomac photos

Every year, the administration appoints one member of the Cabinet to remain outside the House chamber during the State of the Union in case disaster strikes. This role of designated survivor began during the Cold War in the 1960s alongside concerns of a nuclear attack. Former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh served as the designated survivor last year.

In what year did the response to the State of the Union start?

riverboat on the potomac photos

The practice of a rebuttal speech to the State of the Union began in 1966. When the president is a Republican, the response is given by a Democrat, and vice versa.

The budget is the last remaining vehicle for the legislation underpinning the deal after Lucas effectively killed other standalone versions earlier this session by refusing to grant them a hearing.

Macaulay Porter, a spokeswoman for Youngkin, said the governor would have more to say on the subject Thursday morning.

Democratic Del. Luke Torian, Lucas’ counterpart in the House of Delegates, did not respond to a phone call or text message seeking comment.

Representatives for the teams’ parent company, Monumental Sports & Entertainment, had no immediate comment.

Youngkin and entrepreneur Ted Leonsis, the CEO of Monumental, announced in December that they had reached an understanding on a deal to relocate the Capitals and Wizards.

Monumental and the city of Alexandria would put in some upfront money under the terms of the deal, but about $1.5 billion would be financed through bonds issued by a governmental entity lawmakers were expected to set up this year.

Lucas, the most senior member of the state Senate who took over this year as chair of the chamber’s budget committee, has been a vocal skeptic of the project and its financing mechanism the entire session. Lucas, also a sharp critic of the governor’s, told reporters nearly a month ago the project was dead, as far as she was concerned.

She tweeted a meme Thursday night that showed her next to a freshly dug grave, with a tombstone that reads, “Youngkin and Leonsis’ $5 billion arena.”

Arena critics have argued the estimated $2 billion price tag used by supporters doesn’t provide a full accounting.

The budget bills are currently in the hands of a conference committee, a small bipartisan group of legislators that includes Torian and Lucas. The conferees have been meeting to work out a compromise after the two chambers passed competing versions of the spending plan.

Full details of the compromise plan will likely be rolled out around noon Thursday, Lucas said.

One of the House negotiators, Del. Mark Sickles, said the process had gone smoothly overall and lawmakers should still be able to adjourn Saturday, as scheduled.

“Chairman Torian showed great leadership in bringing this negotiation to a close on time. And we’re really happy that we were able to work closely with the Senate in almost all areas,” he said, adding that House leaders had pushed to see if there was a place to find consensus between Democrats and Republicans on the arena.

Moving forward, if the arena is excluded from the budget, Youngkin has a few options.

Virginia governors have the ability to seek amendments to legislation, so he could attempt to put the arena language back in the budget. Lawmakers are scheduled to meet April 17 for a one-day session to consider Youngkin’s proposed amendments and any vetoes.

Youngkin could also call a special session where the process could start over with a new bill.

Lucas said she was “not likely” to change her mind moving forward.

Democrats, who control both General Assembly chambers, could lose Youngkin’s support for some of their own priorities if they kill the arena deal. Both sides have been unusually transparent about the fact that the arena was a bargaining chip in broader negotiations over other Democratic priorities ranging from marijuana retail sales to toll relief in Hampton Roads.

'Magnificent creatures': New photos show largest anaconda ever recorded

A group of scientists uncovered the nearly 10 million-year-old species with help from the huaorani people while filming a disney+ docuseries called 'pole to pole with will smith'.

riverboat on the potomac photos

A giant anaconda species captured recently in the Amazon of Ecuador by a team of scientists is the largest to ever be documented, USA TODAY previously reported , and now, there are images showing just how massive the snake really is.

The group of scientists from The University of Queensland, led by  professor Bryan Fry , uncovered the nearly 10 million-year-old  species  with help from the Indigenous  Huaorani people  while filming  " Pole to Pole with Will Smith ," a  National Geographic  series that will stream on Disney+.

Fry, as well as other scientists who studied the new species, shot incredible photos of the newly discovered snake in action.

Here are some images of the northern green anaconda found in the Orinoco Basin of the Amazon.

Images show 'magnificent' size of northern green anaconda

The invitation by Huaorani Chief Penti Baihua to enter the Baihuaeri Huaorani Territory in the Ecuadorian Amazon was "one of only a handful granted since the tribe’s first contact in 1958," Fry told USA TODAY.

“The size of these magnificent creatures was incredible,"  Fry said in a news release earlier this month. "One female anaconda we encountered measured an astounding 6.3 meters (20.8 feet) long."

Fry's team alongside the Huaorani people took canoes downriver in the Bameno region, where they found "several anacondas lurking in the shallows, lying in wait for prey," Fry told USA TODAY.

The group then captured several specimens of the species, which they named the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima).

Fry mentioned that the key to understanding the discovery has to do with location. The Amazon has two separate basins. The larger basin in the south is home to the green anaconda from which the northern green anaconda comes. The smaller basin in the north is home to the newly discovered northern green anaconda.

The two species differ genetically by 5.5%, Fry shared. “It’s quite significant – to put it in perspective, humans differ from chimpanzees by only about 2%."

Fry's team hopes to keep an eye on the reproduction of the northern green anaconda to gain greater insight into the health of the ecosystem at large.

Though the findings made by Fry's group are incredible, there are anecdotal reports from the Huaorani people of other anacondas in the area "measuring more than 7.5 meters long (24.6 feet) and weighing around 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds)," Fry shared.

Details on the snakes found have been published in  the journal MDPI Diversity .
