Lil Yachty made headlines back in January thanks to the successful release of Let’s Start Here., his 14-track experimental body of work. The LP housed assists from Diana Gordon, Teezo Touchdown, Justine Skye, Fousheé, Baby K, Ant Clemons, Nick Hakim, Justin Raisen, Daniel Caesar, and more. Let’s Start Here. garnered him a top 10 placement on the Billboard 200 thanks to 36,000 album-equivalent units sold during its first week of release.
Over the weekend, the Georgia-born rapper decided he was ready to follow up with a new single and unleashed “Strike (Holster).” The accompanying clip was directed by frequent collaborator Cole Bennett and takes place on a gloomy dock on a rainy day, a setting perfect for Teddy Walton’s airy production. On the song, the “Poland” rapper spits about wanting to link up and have a smoke session:
“I been rolled up, yeah, I was geekin’, I was high as f**k, tweakin’/ I was tryna strike s**t, I was tryna strike s**t, I was tryna strike s**t, like a match, late night, yeah/ Strike like I missed it, strike like I hit the pin, strike like I’m not goin’ to work/ Show them somethin’ show them, show them, uh, stack them old hunnids , recreate Yoda, I don’t put no crushed ice in my soda, got it stuck like a holster”
Prior to Let’s Start Here . was 2021’s Michigan Boy Boat , a 14-track body of work that saw additional features from Tee Grizzley, Swae Lee, Sada Baby, YN Jay, Rio da Yung OG, Babyface Ray , and more. Months later, he dropped off the sixth installment of his Birthday Mix series, bringing in his 24th trip around the sun with SoFaygo, Lil Tecca, DC2Trill, and Draft Day.

Lil Yachty Drops Music Video for “Strike (Holster)”
by Thomas Galindo April 10, 2023, 12:30 pm
Lil Yachty’s second wind is becoming more imaginative than his first.
Videos by American Songwriter
After emerging on the hip-hop scene in the mid-2010s with hits like “One Night,” “Minnesota,” and “Broccoli,” Yachty hit a bit of a trough in popularity and viral appeal to end the decade. But now, after a recent smash hit single and career-altering studio album , Yachty is back in the spotlight and continuously leaving listeners speechless, as evident in his new song “Strike (Holster).”
Six months removed from his quirky song “Poland,” which reached No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, and a little over two months since his experimental psychedelic rock record Let’s Start Here , “Strike (Holster)” sees Yachty continue to ride his roaring wave of momentum even more. Employing similar vocal inflections as “Poland,” holding the prolonged “oooooooh” harmony at the song’s climax, Yachty looks to have stumbled upon a winning formula.
Throughout the track, the Georgia native raps about his love for promethazine and fits multiple different allusions in for the word strike. Strike shit like a match, Strike like I missed it, Strike like I hit the pin, Strike like I’m not goin’ to work he croons on the chorus, Yachty’s spontaneity and youthfulness brim all over the recording.
When he approaches the second verse of the song, he playfully illustrates the effect of Percocet on his significant other, leaving her motionless. Putting a playful spin on the usually-harsh motifs of guns and drugs in rap music, “Strike (Holster)” is a masterclass by Yachty.
Percy got her stuck like a holster It’s a gun in my holster New Balenci’ out in Dover It’s a four in my soda, sit it on a Balenci’ coaster
“Strike (Holster)” was first teased via Instagram on March 23 by Cole Bennett, prominent music video director and founder of music video brand Lyrical Lemonade. Alluding to a visual for “Strike (Holster)” being in the works, fans knew to expect the song’s release shortly after.
Less than two days after the song officially came out on digital streaming platforms, Lyrical Lemonade uploaded the music video to their YouTube page on Saturday (April 8). The fifth time Bennett and Yachty have collaborated on a video, “Strike (Holster)” sees Yachty donning a red hoodie and head-bopping to the song’s blissful production.
Since its release, the visuals for “Strike (Holster)” have already eclipsed 1 million views, proving that Yachty’s resurgence is for real. It’s unclear if the new song is in promotion of an upcoming project , but it is indisputably a signifier of Yachty’s work ethic and unique songwriting. Check out the video below.

Fred again.. has officially unveiled his collaboration with Lil Yachty and Overmono . After previewing the then-untitled cut at an impromptu New York City rave at Queens’ Knockdown Center, the DJ released “stayinit” on streaming everywhere today.
“We played Yachty our song out of a Soundsystem for the first time,” the video opens, before focusing in on Yachty’s reaction to the song. By the time the beat drops, he’s dancing in the middle of the stage underneath flashing blue lights.

Dr. Umar Explains to Lil Yachty Why He Should Stop Using N-Word
Lil Boat explained the use of the N-word is a way for Black people to reclaim their power.
Lil Yachty and Dr. Umar Johnson had an interesting conversation regarding the N-word on the latest episode of A Safe Place.
The controversial social media personality was a guest on Yachty's show, which was shared on Wednesday, and the two got deep into the topic of the N-word and how popular it is in the Black community. According to Dr. Umar, the derogatory word is so widely used in Black culture because of Post Traumatic Slavery Disease.
"Show me another group of people who will fight for the right to continue to use a word that the government itself codified as a psychological word of mass destruction against your people," said Dr. Umar. "Nobody else is fighting for the right to use a racially pejorative term except Black people. It's because of your Post Traumatic Slavery Disease."
Yachty had a different outlook on the word, saying, "I was thinking it was a thing of almost just the swag and confidence that African Americans have that look like some, 'Fuck y'all, we gon' take the shit y'all use to break us down with and let you know that it don't have no power over us."
View this video on YouTube
Dr. Umar disagreed with Yachty's take and stated his argument is just like the one Black men use to justify sleeping with white women as a way to get payback for slavery. He also spoke on how troubling the images of Black women in hip-hop culture are these days.
"I'm not holding you accountable for what everybody does," Johnson said. "But, there's few mediums of media that have sexually objectified the Black woman more than hip-hop. So, If I'm a little Black girl and every music video I turn on, she's half dressed with big breasts and a big ass and I want a Black man to want me and like me and I probably ain't got no daddy cause the White man locked him up or the police killed him off. What am I gonna do to be attractive?"
Yachty disagreed again, saying, "I think a lot of women make decisions. A: for themselves. And B: to impress their friends just as much as a man. I think a lot of women do things to keep up with their friends...I didn't say more but I do think...I think for themselves. They ain't gotta be attractive; I think it's for self-esteem."
Lil Yachty is fresh off releasing the Cardo-produced track " Something Ether " and its Little Miles/AMD Visuals-directed music video. The song is part of Yachty's EP titled Something Ether which features other Yachty drops such as "A Cold Sunday," the J. Cole-assisted " The Secret Recipe ," and "Strike (Holster)."
