Russian superyacht Amadea arrives in Honolulu from Fiji

HONOLULU (AP) — A Russian-owned superyacht seized by the United States arrived in Honolulu Harbor on Thursday flying an American flag.

The U.S. last week won a legal battle in Fiji to take the $325 million vessel and immediately sailed it to Hawaii.

The FBI has linked the Amadea to the Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov. The U.S. said Kerimov secretly bought the Cayman Island-flagged vessel last year through various shell companies.

The ship became a target of Task Force KleptoCapture, launched in March to seize the assets of Russian oligarchs to put pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

The FBI said a search warrant in Fiji turned up emails showing that Kerimov’s children were aboard the ship this year and that the crew used code names — G0 for Kerimov, G1 for his wife, G2 for his daughter and so on.

The 348-foot-long (106-meter-long) vessel, about the length of a football field, features a live lobster tank, a hand-painted piano, a swimming pool and a large helipad.

Lawyer Feizal Haniff, who represented Millemarin Investments, the owner on paper, had argued the owner was another wealthy Russian who, unlike Kerimov, doesn’t face sanctions.

We are conveniently located near all the major hotels in Honolulu. We share the harbor with the nearby Prince Waikiki , Ilikai Hotel , and the Hilton Hawaiian Village . If you are staying at the Royal Hawaiian , Outrigger Waikiki, or Sheraton Waikiki we are a short 10-15 minute walk along the beach. Many of our hotel guests take a morning stroll over to the harbor or rent a Biki bike at one of their kiosks. There is a nice bike path along the beach; you can catch it right at the end of Lewers Street or take the scenic route and cut through the path at the Hale Koa Hotel .

For guests staying on other parts of the island, we offer transportation recommendations.

There is ample parking near the vessel. Parking in the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor is convenient and affordable.

We recommend shared rides or taxi service for cruises that depart on Friday evenings.

• A Russian oligarch's $300 million superyacht arrived in Hawaii Thursday flying the American flag.
• The US successfully seized the vessel after a month-long legal battle in Fiji over its ownership.

A $300 million Russian superyacht that the US has been attempting to seize since April arrived in Hawaii on Thursday flying the American flag.

At 348 feet, the Amadea is nearly as long as a football field. The luxurious boat features a large helipad, an in-deck pool, gold detailing, and eight separate cabins.

The Amadea's arrival in Honolulu harbor is the result of a lengthy legal battle between the US and Millemarin Investment Limited, the company that legally owns the vessel.

The US alleged the Amadea belonged to Russian gold tycoon Suleiman Kerimov, who was sanctioned in 2018 following Russia's invasion of Crimea.

The Russian billionaire is believed to have "close ties" to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2017, he was accused of laundering hundreds of millions of euros through luxury real estate purchases in France.

But the lawyer representing Millemarin Investment Ltd. argued that the Amadea was actually owned by Russian oil executive Eduard Khudainatov, who is not sanctioned.

For eight weeks, the superyacht remained in Fiji as the two parties battled it out over which Russian oligarch was the boat's true owner.

It was a legal saga riddled with drama, as CBS News reported. From secret code names to crew members refusing to sail with US officials, getting the boat into US waters was not a simple feat.

The Amadea's seizure was coordinated through the Justice Department's KleptoCapture group, a task force put together to track down sanctioned assets following Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Although the Russian superyacht is now under US control, the "craziest thing" about its seizure is the boat's costly upkeep, as Joe Biden's national security advisor was recorded saying Thursday.

"When we seize one, we have to pay for upkeep," Sullivan said. "The federal government pays for upkeep ... so like some people are basically being paid to maintain Russian superyachts on behalf of the United States government."

The Amadea's support and maintenance is reported to cost between $25 million and $30 million a year. Without proper care, the Russian yachts seized by governments around the world could lose 30% of their value.

The best value Sunset Cruise off Waikiki! Beneteau 43ft.

We had Captian Tom and Ken on our booking . Great value , We didn’t have time to grab drinks and snack/ sandwiches prior to sailing as the cab driver taking us to the marina did know where the supermarket was on the way . Ken was gracious enough to drive me to the closet store so we could enjoy the day. booked 4 hour trip and went snorkelling ( didn’t see much ) it was still great . then put the sails up and it was awesome to experience a sailboat for the first time andfortunate enough to see some whales up close (pretty cool ) Both Tom and Ken were excellent . remember to bring your own supplies for food. we were 7 in total and it was the right amount of people for this vessel . Thanks again Tom and Ken . wish you all the best !

Robalo R272 Luxury Fishing and Snorkel Powerboat in Honolulu, Hawaii

Shanti and his first mate Stefan were a joy to go out on the water with. We came across humpback whales in the first 20 minutes, then jumped in the water to snorkel with a pod of Pilot whales, and finished up the day snorkeling in a beautiful spot with turtles...oh and we and had dolphins swimming alongside the boat as we cruised to the snorkeling spot. You can never be guaranteed as to what you will see on the water, but I can guarantee you that if the wildlife is out there, Shanti and Stefan will find it and you will love being in their capable hands on this beautiful boat!

Russian oligarch's yacht costs U.S. taxpayers close to $1 million a month

A mega-yacht seized by U.S. authorities from a Russian oligarch is costing the government nearly $1 million a month to maintain, according to new court filings.

The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking permission to sell a 348-foot yacht called Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov. The government said it wants to sell the $230 million yacht due to the “excessive costs” of maintenance and crew, which it said could total $922,000 a month.

“It is excessive for taxpayers to pay nearly a million dollars per month to maintain the Amadea when these expenses could be reduced to zero through [a] sale,” according to a court filing by U.S. prosecutors on Friday.

The monthly charges for Amadea, which is now docked in San Diego, California, include $600,000 per month in running costs: $360,000 for the crew; $75,000 for fuel; and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food and other expenses. They also include $144,000 in monthly pro-rata insurance costs and special charges including dry-docking fees, at $178,000, bringing the total to $922,000, according to the filings.

The battle over Amadea and the costs to the government highlight the financial and legal challenges of seizing and selling assets owned by Russian oligarchs after the country’s invasion of Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last week that the European Union should use profits from more than $200 billion of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s war effort.

Her comments echoed government calls in the spring of 2022 to freeze the yachts, private jets and mansions of Russian billionaires in hopes of putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and raising money for the war effort.

Yet, nearly two years later, the legal process for proving ownership of the Russian assets and selling them has proven to be far more time-consuming and costly. In London, Russian billionaire Eugene Shvidler has waged a court battle over his private jets that were impounded, and Sergei Naumenko has been appealing the detention of his superyacht Phi.

The battle over Amadea began in April 2022, when it was seized in Fiji at the request of the U.S. government, according to the court filings.

Though the U.S. alleges that the yacht is owned by Kerimov, who made his fortune in mining, attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.

In court filings, Khudainatov’s attorneys have objected to the U.S. government’s efforts to sell the yacht, saying a rushed sale could lead to a distressed sale price and that the maintenance costs are minor relative to the potential sale value.

Khudainatov’s attorneys refuse to pay the ongoing maintenance costs as long as the government pursues a sale and forfeiture. However, they say their client will reimburse the U.S. government for the more than $20 million already spent to maintain the yacht if it’s returned to its proper owner.

In court papers, the government says Kerimov disguised his ownership of Amadea through a series of shell companies and other owners. They say emails between crew members show Kerimov “was the beneficial owner of the yacht, irrespective of the titleholder of the vessel.”

The emails show that Kerimov and his family ordered several interior improvements of the yacht, including a new pizza oven and spa, and that between 2021 and 2022, when the boat was seized, “there were no guest trips on the Amadea that did not include either Kerimov or his family members,” according to the court filings.

The government also says Kerimov has been trying to sell Amadea for years, so a sale would be in keeping with his intent.

“This is not a situation in which a court would be ordering sale of a precious heirloom that a claimant desperately wishes to keep for sentimental reasons,” the government said in filings.

Even if Amadea were sold quickly, the proceeds wouldn’t automatically go to the government. Under law, the money would be held while Khudainatov and the government continue their battle in court over the ownership and forfeiture.

NEW YORK >> British billionaire Joe Lewis, whose family trust owns the Tottenham Hotspur soccer club, will not spend any time in prison after pleading guilty to insider trading and conspiracy charges in New York, a federal judge said today.

Judge G.L. Clarke cited Lewis’ decision to promptly come to the United States to face charges and his failing health, along with a lifetime of good works, in ruling that Lewis will face three years on probation and a $5 million fine rather than time behind bars.

Lewis, 87, was wearing an eye patch and one of his hands shook steadily throughout the one-hour proceeding in a federal court in Manhattan. He has remained in the United States since last July.

Before he was sentenced, Lewis spoke briefly, saying he learned growing up in England during World War II how “precious” life is and decided to devote much of his life to finding a cure for “horrendous diseases.”

“Your honor, I’m here today because I made a terrible mistake. I’m ashamed,” he said.

Lewis said he hoped “to make amends and to rebuild the trust that I have squandered” for the remainder of his life.

U.S. sentencing guidelines had called for Lewis, a citizen of the United Kingdom and resident of the Bahamas, to serve 18 months to two years behind bars. Even prosecutors, though, agreed time behind bars was not necessary.

At his January plea, Lewis admitted that he agreed in 2019 to share secrets about publicly traded companies with several individuals. Prosecutors said afterward that his company, Broad Bay Limited, and Lewis would pay $50 million in financial penalties, the largest such penalty for insider trading in a decade.

His lawyer said today that the money was in escrow and ready to be paid and plans were for him to leave the United States for the Bahamas tonight.

Prosecutors wrote in their presentence submission that Lewis deserved leniency because he is older and “battles significant health issues” that would cause a term of imprisonment to be more difficult for him than others.

They cited his acceptance of responsibility that he demonstrated by voluntarily surrendering rather than forcing a drawn-out extradition battle, and said that he’d “otherwise lived a law-abiding life.”

The government also noted that Lewis is recognized as one of the 500 richest people in the world with approximately $6.2 billion as of February, including homes in several countries; a $250 million yacht; private planes valued at $90 million and an art collection worth $100 million.

When she announced the sentence, the judge said: “It is clear to me that Mr. Lewis’s life would be at serious risk if he were to be incarcerated.”

Defense attorneys said in their presentence submission that Lewis “is nearing the end of life in declining health.”

They said Lewis was aware that his conviction meant he can’t return to the United States to see his children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren, who all live in the U.S.

From the start, Lewis was no ordinary defendant. After his arrest less than a year ago, he had been free on $300 million bail after putting up a yacht and private plane as collateral.

In court papers, prosecutors said Lewis learned secrets about public companies after making large investments. They said that on at least four occasions, he tipped off his girlfriend, personal pilots, employees and friends, enabling them to profit from the secrets.

“This insider trading was not the result of aberrant, one-time conduct, but rather, a troubling pattern of misconduct over the course of several years,” they wrote.

Prosecutors said the insider activity might have resulted from “hubris, ego, a desire to make a financial gift without parting with his own money, an irrational form of greed, or some other reason.”

But, regardless, “it is clear that Lewis believed he was above the law — that he had achieved a level of wealth and stature that relieved him from having to operate by the same rules that apply to everyday investors,” prosecutors said.

As he left the courthouse, Lewis was surrounded by aides who blocked members of the media from seeing him as he walked a short distance to a waiting vehicle.

Lawsuit naming Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs as co-defendant alleges his son sexually assaulted woman on yacht

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A lawsuit that names  Sean “Diddy” Combs  as a co-defendant alleges that his son Christian “King” Combs sexually assaulted a woman working on a yacht chartered by his father.

The suit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court says that Sean Combs created the circumstances that led to the assault, and paid to cover it up afterward. It’s the latest in a  series of lawsuits  accusing the producer and music mogul of sexual misconduct, and it comes amid a federal sex trafficking investigation that led Homeland Security agents to  raid his homes in Los Angeles and Miami  last week.

Grace O’Marcaigh, who worked as a crew member and a bartender on the boat, says that in late December of 2022, Christian Combs pressured her to drink tequila that she believes was spiked with other drugs. He groped her breasts and genitals and attempted to force her to perform oral sex, the suit alleges.

The AP does not typically name people who say they have been sexually abused unless they come forward publicly, as O’Marcaigh has done. She also consented to being named through her attorneys.

Combs’ attorney Aaron Dyer did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment from The Associated Press. Dyer said after  last week’s raids  that Sean Combs “is innocent and will continue to fight every single day to clear his name,” and that the investigation is “nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits.”

He told the Los Angeles Times that the latest lawsuit is a “lewd and meritless claim” full of “manufactured lies.”

Sean Combs, who chartered the yacht throughout the holidays in 2022, “had full control of the staff and premises” and “turned what was sold as a wholesome family excursion into a hedonistic environment,” the suit said. The court filing alleges he created circumstances where her assault was not only tolerated but encouraged.

O’Marcaigh, who was 25 at the time, said when Christian Combs, then 24, came aboard late one night, he appeared heavily intoxicated, and began giving her inappropriate attention.

She said the two were in a music studio on board the ship, where producer  Rodney Jones, who filed his own lawsuit  in February, was told to be available around the clock for Sean Combs to work on his next album.

O’Marcaigh said in the suit that Christian Combs was insistent that she take shots of tequila, and she drank out of obligation.

The suit alleges he became increasingly aggressive with her, violently grabbing her arm as she tried to get out of the situation then groping her. The drinks made everything blurry, unusually quickly, the suit says.

Microphones in the studio, where Jones was told to capture everything, recorded their exchange, and the lawsuit includes a transcript where O’Marcaigh demands that Christian Combs stop touching her.

The suit alleges that he later continued the assault in the ship’s movie theater, which was used as a spare sleeping area and where she was attempting to find a place to spend the night because the rooms were all taken, before another crew member appeared and he stopped.

O’Marcaigh told the yacht’s captain about the assault the following morning, but she alleges that after Combs gave him a large amount of cash the same day, the captain failed to meaningfully investigate or take any action.

The suit says O’Marcaigh was eventually fired in retaliation, and has since been unable to find work in the music industry where she had planned to build a career. It says since 2022, she has suffered severe emotional trauma.

The lawsuit seeks damages to be determined at trial.

Christian Combs is also a musical artist whose song “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” with Kodak Black topped Billboard’s Mainstream R&B Hip-Hop charts in 2022. He was at his father’s Los Angeles home during last week’s searches, during which he and his brother were handcuffed, but were not arrested.

The producer Jones’ lawsuit, filed by the same attorney as O’Marcaigh’s in February, includes allegations that Sean Combs coerced him to solicit prostitutes and pressured him to have sex with them.

It was one of  several lawsuits  that have brought public scrutiny to the music and business mogul, beginning with a November lawsuit from his former protege and girlfriend, the  R&B singer Cassie , which alleged years of sexual abuse, including rape. It was  settled the following day .

Combs and his attorneys have denied all of the lawsuits’ allegations.

Combs, a three-time Grammy winner and the founder of Bad Boy Records, is among the most influential hip-hop producers and executives of the past three decades. He turned his hip-hop empire into a broader business empire that includes  private-label spirits , fashion, and a  TV network .
