2023 Superyacht Welcome Function

The event, hosted by NZ Marine , is the largest superyacht networking event in the southern hemisphere and sees local industry companies host captains, crew and guests. Crew from more than 35 yachts were invited to the event, held on Auckland’s waterfront, with those celebrating their first season in New Zealand mingling with crew glad to be back. 

NZ Marine’s Peter Busfield welcomed superyacht captains and crew and thanked them for choosing to come to New Zealand, as well as acknowledging the 47 sponsor companies that make the event possible. 

The event is a chance for crew to meet with representatives from New Zealand’s extensive superyacht refit, maintenance, parts and supplies, and support industry to gain information on the industry’s capabilities, and allow crew to share cruising information with each other. 

The Superyacht Welcome Function profiles New Zealand’s superyacht-friendly regulations and easy clearance procedures, which include a two year temporary import period and tax concessions. Those regulations are supported by the expansion of marina and shipyard infrastructure in Auckland, Northland and Tauranga, making New Zealand an efficient place for superyacht cruising and refit work, starting from clearance into the country. 

NZ Marine , the organisation which administers Superyacht New Zealand, also invites crew to pick up a copy of the Destination & Cruising New Zealand book, which is available for download. Detailing the best of New Zealand cruising, it acts as a companion for crew both planning their New Zealand journey and those already in the country. ‘You can change the view’: rotating house goes up for sale in New Zealand

Engineer Don Dunick took years to conceptualise and build ‘the lighthouse’, which can turn 360 degrees to offer views of the sea or native bushland

A house in New Zealand that can rotate continuously like a carousel has been listed for sale for the first time since its owner designed and built it 35 years ago.

The building, nicknamed ‘the lighthouse’, perches on Auckland’s coastal Maraetai hillside atop a two metre-wide cylindrical steel base and is believed to be the only one of its kind in the country. A full revolution takes 33 minutes.

When its owner, engineer Don Dunick, was contemplating what sort of house he wanted to build on the coastal plot, his engineering colleagues suggested a novel idea – a rotating house that could take in the views of the sea, or the native bush, depending on his mood.

“The advantage is that you can change the view, you can change the sun, you can get out of the wind or into the wind … If there is a storm coming at night [and] you don’t want that on your bedroom windows, you turn it,” he told the Guardian on Tuesday.

“I was sitting there a few weeks ago and the sun came around and was in my TV, so I got up and turned the house.”

It took Dunick and his colleagues five years to design a system that ensured all the services such as water, electricity and sewage piping were independent and could rotate with the house as it moved – something the local council required before it would sign off on the build.

The end result is “the simplest system you’ll ever see in your life”, Dunick said, adding that it could be adapted to allow houses to rise up and down, protecting them from natural hazards such as flooding or wildfire.

Carolyn Hanson from Sotheby’s International Realty, said the property, valued at just over NZ$1m, will be sold through a tender process. Since it was listed for sale last week, it has been swamped with visitors, Hanson said. “There is a lot of intrigue from locals and now we are getting international interest.”

Dunick, now 80, plans to move back to New Zealand from his current home in Australia later this year, and hopes to semi-retire in rural Northland. Selling the home he loves is bittersweet.

“I am over-the-moon with it, it is an amazing achievement … and ahead of its time,” he said.

“But [the new owners] can look forward to a better way of living … you turn the house to suit what you want, it’s amazing.”

Two people critically injured in Mt Albert, Auckland incident - large police presence at scene

Two people have been critically injured in an incident in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert today.

Emergency services are responding to the incident, with at least four police cars, an ambulance, and a fire truck called to Asquith Ave about 1.20pm.

A police spokeswoman said they did not believe there was any risk to the wider public from the incident.

“Inquiries are ongoing to understand the full circumstances of what has occurred,” she said.

“It’s understood two people, who are known to each other, have received critical injuries.”

Around 3.20pm a woman was seen being taken away from the scene in a police vehicle.

St John Ambulance took one person to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition. Fire and Emergency New Zealand said it was on the scene to help St John.

In 2020, newsroom.co.nz reported Kāinga Ora had spent $300,000 on security guards to ease concerns about one resident at its housing complex on Asquith Ave.

Homes neighbouring the Kāinga Ora development are valued at $2 million, according to the newsroom.co.nz report.

Neighbours voiced their disbelief at the incident and said they had been left in the dark about what had happened.

“I’ve lived on this street for 30 years and never seen anything like this,” one resident said.

Police officers could be seen speaking to a woman at the scene.

Another officer would not let a resident back into her home, saying “It’s a crime scene.”

Several neighbours stood on their balconies, in the rain, at the Kāinga Ora complex watching police cordon off entrances to their properties.

Occasional shouts could be heard from the building.

A person living in the nearby area, who asked not to be named due to fears for their safety, said Kāinga Ora refused to answer their complaints about ongoing poor behaviour of some tenants living in the complex.

”We had bodyguards here for months,” he said. “There was a lot of smashing but this has been escalating and escalating.”

People nearby told the Herald they heard smashing and yelling before emergency services arrived.

An hour from when the incident is understood to have occurred, police and investigators are still arriving at the address.

A man who was allegedly involved in the incident has been causing issues in the area for at least a year, witnesses said.

“If they [Kainga Ora] actually dealt with stuff, it would be a deterrent to others,” one resident said.
