This New 95-Foot Superyacht Is Like an Open-Plan Loft on the Water

Design-wise, the princess x95 is a rule-breaker. it's not only open and spacious inside, but also has an explorer hull for long-distance cruising., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Princess Yachts officially debuted its new X95 Monday on Facebook Live, a platform that has become a sign of these times—virtual launches, instead of real boats at boat shows. But the unusual design of the X-series’ flagship also signals changing times for Princess, showing a bolder, more creative period for the UK builder, which is now making new design rules instead of following them.

The X95—the “X” unofficially standing for explorer—is not only a sea change for Princess, but also for the 100-foot segment of the superyacht world. Princess’s goals for the X95 were an “open concept” and supersized flybridge, so owners would have greater freedom for layout choices, increased living space and more amenities in a smaller hull.

“We pushed the design language forward on this design,” Antony Sheriff, Princess chairman, said during a press conference last Thursday. “This was never going to be a traditional boat, but we asked ourselves how we could push it forward as a new design and still have it recognizable as a Princess.”

Princess

The X-95 has the same interior volume as a 115-foot yacht. It reaches a top speed of 24 knots, but, at 10 knots, has a range of 2000 miles.  Princess Yachts

The Princess team, working with its longtime naval architect Bernard Olesinski and Italian design house Pininfarina, spent months hammering out the initial concept. “We had everyone in the room during design reviews and that collaboration really stretched where we wanted to take the boat,” says Sheriff. “We also went into a level of detail that is standard in the auto industry, but not in the boating world.”

The details, both large and small, included making sure that exterior surfaces like the arch on the flybridge reflected light normally in all conditions. “Details like that make a big difference,” says Sheriff. “If the surface reflected light oddly at sundown, for instance, it would make that part of the yacht look off.”

There were even larger modifications to the interior. The designers decided to remove an internal helm and instead made the helm on the top deck the primary station for driving the yacht.

X95

The sky lounge on the yacht offers excellent visibility, not only through the side windows, but also in the front and rear. Having this much space on the upper deck is a highly unusual design for a yacht this size.

“The midway helm works for some, but it positions quite a large cockpit on the main deck, often leaving a small technical space beneath the helm position,” Andy Lawrence, Princess’s director of design told Robb Report . “By deleting the lower helm, owners can now use the main deck without interruption.”

In other words, instead of having a steering station in the middle of the room, owners can turn the long, unbroken space into a master suite, library, or cinema, or anything else that they fancy. Lawrence says this “open concept” provides 80-foot-long views from the rear of the boat all the way through the salon, up to the bow. That sense of openness is the same as an urban loft, where internal walls do not distort the view. Combine the sweeping space with an open-plan galley, Lawrence says, and the design becomes very popular with American yachtsmen.

“They like their open kitchen arrangements and to have the crew involved with the daily workings of the boat,” he says.

X95 Princess

Room With a View: By taking out the helm station on the second deck, Princess designers could add a full-beam master suite with no structural impediments.  Princess Yachts

Beyond open space, supersizing interior volume was also a major design goal. The 670-foot interior is actually a 40 percent increase on comparable sized yachts . It’s even 200 square feet larger than the interior on Princess’ 114-foot model.

“Because you don’t have that helm hanging through the middle, we can play with different configurations and look at different usages,” says Lawrence.

Other big changes on the X95 include the sky lounge, which has been relocated to the top deck to optimize views. The beach club area also has a lounge area and galley which can either be used as guest space or extra crew cabin. Customized steps that extend backwards were added to the stern to turn the area into a transformer platform.

X95

The designers paid very close attention to details on this yacht, including how light reflected off exterior surfaces at different times of the day.

“It’s the first time we’ve used this kind of mechanism and it was made fully bespoke by Opacmare for us,” says Lawrence. “It’s about five feet wider than the biggest one they make, so it was quite a piece of engineering—and probably took about as long to develop as the rest of the boat.”

Increased efficiencies were designed into the X95. Deck space was increased by 10 percent, thanks to the “super flybridge,” which, unlike conventional flybridge models, is one continuous level. The new hull design offers 15 percent increased efficiency while running.

X95

The unusual configuration includes a large foredeck on the top level.

Naval architect Olesinski’s wave-piercing bow “artificially extends the waterline length of the boat,” says Lawrence. “Combined with the shape of the hull, that’s what gives you the efficiency.”

The yacht will have a range of 2,000 miles at a 10-knot cruising speed, but it also reaches a highly respectable top end of 24 knots.

The first X95 has been delivered and the owners are enjoying a shakedown cruise in the Med. Annie Reed of the Princess Design Studio said so much open interior spaces allows owners many ways to configure the yacht. Hull number one has book shelves on the main deck so the owner can keep his prized library on board. By contrast, the second boat will have floor-to-ceiling windows to allow in more light. “It’s those kinds of requests that the Princess Design Studio works well with,” she said. “It’s part of our ability to understand different international lifestyles.”

x95

The open galley area allows clear line of sight from the rear cockpit up to the forward section of the main deck.  Princess Yachts

Sheriff, who came to Princess after running automobile manufacturer McLaren, says an X80 will be next in its X series. “This product stands on its own feet,” he said “It’s a really compelling recipe—significantly more interior volume and extended range. This product is a very different option for our customers.”

“It’s always good to have someone coming from outside the industry with fresh eyes to just look at what you’re doing and ask questions,” says Lawrence, regarding Sheriff. “Why do you do it like that? Why do people use the flybridge in that manner? I think it was a result of those questions that pushed us to come up with this new concept.”

With ten X95 models sold to different owners around the world, it would seem that the theory is working.

Princess X95 Review (2022 Edition)

Princess has possibly created its most thrilling, industrious, and uniquely distinct yacht yet, which could easily stand among its finest creations.

Princess X95 Review (2022 Edition) image 1

Just a few years back, the idea of the X95 seemed far-fetched, especially for Princess which is known for its classic styling. However, times have changed, and for the better. Yacht design has surged forward, inspired by a daring superyacht market and the demands of discerning buyers.

Princess' journey through the challenges of crafting M Class superyachts has undoubtedly instilled a boldness in their approach, all while staying attuned to customer desires. The outcome? The X Class, vessels entirely focused on owner comfort, so much so that they might as well come with a bedtime tucking-in feature.

Our Scores Explained

Design & Build

When a yacht like the X95 makes its debut, it's impossible to ignore. This 29m (95ft) vessel, capable of cruising at 25 knots with a crew, defies categorization and represents a significant departure for its British manufacturer, Princess.

Combining the bold design elements seen in its earlier M Class yachts with the practical luxury found in its flybridge F and Y Class models, the X series is packed with features that set it apart in its size category. However, above all else, the X95 prioritizes one thing: owner comfort.

Princess X95 design

In theory, the design of the X95 is simple, but its execution is incredible. This yacht maximizes space across two expansive decks, pushing the boundaries of what's possible inside and out. The upper deck — a defining feature of the X Class — introduces innovative elements like an elevated lounge and a walkaround terrace that spans from bow to stern.

Height of Luxury

The dual-deck layout naturally increases the yacht's height, a factor carefully managed to maintain aesthetic appeal. Extensive glass sections create an illusion of floating within slim white moldings, a design concept Princess has explored before but never to this extent. Alternatively, buyers can opt for more adventurous choices, with a range of exterior color schemes available.

Princess X95 design

The vertical design of the X95 shoulders most of the interior space allocation, as its slimmer beam (compared to competitors) doesn't contribute as much to volume creation. This design results in a visually tall yacht, necessitating stabilizers for stability. However, the payoff is substantial.

In addition to the upper deck, the X95 offers a generously sized and adaptable main deck. Owners can choose between a forward stateroom or a dining area, paired with what Princess terms a "country kitchen" and a social galley, perfect for gathering and enjoying the surrounding views. Below decks, the standard four-cabin layout is available, or owners can opt for a more customized configuration, as demonstrated by our test yacht.

Interior Accommodation

The upper deck lounge stands out as a star feature, but much of your decision-making will revolve around the main deck, which offers ample space for customization. With no standard layout in place, freestanding furniture allows for personalized styling of the salon. There's room for a spacious lounge and dining area, and buyers can opt for either expansive glass sections or sliding doors on each side, which offer stunning views. Our test boat's owner chose both options, underscoring their appeal.

The primary decision for owners centers on whether to have a forward owner's stateroom or a country kitchen with an open social galley, bar, and dining area. The standard galley boasts a well-thought-out design, with ample storage and refrigeration options. Additionally, a side door allows the crew to operate and serve without disrupting guests in the salon.

The Owner Takes it All

The forward galley and dining option may pique interest, yet nearly all of the 20-plus X95s built so far have opted for the owner's cabin on the main deck. This choice speaks volumes about the draw of the main deck stateroom, a true hallmark of a superyacht. Moreover, with the additional upper lounge onboard, there's no shortage of gathering spaces on this vessel.

The stateroom boasts an elevated feel, offering captivating views through two deep windows overlooking the water. owners can also opt for a study, dressing area, and lounge within the cabin. A forward window provides a peek into the foredeck snug, complete with a pop-up TV, although the yacht we examined featured a sizable fixed TV instead. The ensuite, positioned aft of the cabin, may not be the largest, but it's perfectly adequate, with various layout and finish options available; our test yacht boasted elegant white marble finishes.

Guest Stars

The semi-custom approach shines below decks, where you have the option to choose from various layouts, whether opting for a three or four-cabin configuration. In the four-cabin design, a VIP stateroom is situated forward and amidships, flanked by twin cabins. Each cabin offers generous proportions and comes with its ensuite bathroom.

For those prioritizing flexibility and placing emphasis on VIP accommodations, the three-cabin layout is an attractive option. During our test, we encountered a striking addition: a sprawling walk-in closet accompanying the amidships suite, replacing the starboard guest cabin. This enhancement elevates an already exceptional cabin to newfound heights, offering a private and inviting sanctuary comparable to the main deck stateroom. The deep hull-side windows add to its allure, making it just as captivating and spectacular.

That Elevated Feeling

Ascending to the main deck, an elegant staircase beckons toward the upper lounge, offering a serene setting to soak in the surrounding vistas. The space is adorned with a curated selection of sofas, inviting guests to unwind and savor the scenery, with expansive glass panels and skylights framing the panoramic views. Doors seamlessly connect to the aft deck, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living.

Customization options abound, with possibilities ranging from a convenient day head to a well-appointed bar and a variety of freestanding furniture choices. However, one of the upper lounge's standout features is its direct access to the bridge, imbuing the area with a sense of nautical sophistication that complements its luxurious ambiance. This proximity allows the owner and guests to convene effortlessly during voyages, fostering easy communication with the captain and ensuring an unforgettable yachting experience.

Helm Station

Perched forward on the upper deck, the X95 boasts a singular elevated bridge designed with a ship-like layout. A central helm seat and console command attention, flanked by forward-leaning windscreens that not only instill a sense of purpose but also offer exceptional forward and alongside visibility. Standard features include triple screens, with the option to expand to two more, providing ample space for navigational and ancillary equipment.

The specification encompasses an impressive array of navigational tools, including radar and chartplotter, while a Bonning ship-system display offers comprehensive control over various aspects of the yacht's operation. From managing the AC/DC supply to adjusting lighting, monitoring cameras, and regulating climate, this centralized system ensures control and monitoring for enhanced safety and convenience.

Princess X95 bridge

Featuring guest and crew seating to port, the X95 offers convenient access to the side and foredeck through a starboard door. Adjacent to the door, a fold-out wing station provides the Captain with an excellent vantage point to assess both the conditions and the yacht's movements up close. Additionally, another docking station is located on the main deck aft, facilitating stern-to-mooring maneuvers for added convenience and ease of operation.

Deck Lifestyle

The upper deck stands out as the signature exterior feature of the X design, setting this yacht apart from any previous Princess flybridge models. Noteworthy for both its expansive scale and the elevated level of style and specification, the deck features a full walkaround design. The immense aft terrace connects to a stunning stepped foredeck, providing ample space for a Jacuzzi if desired.

Princess X95 design

The entire upper deck is truly spectacular. The journey forward is a mesmerizing experience, with the overhang and pillar creating an elegant breaking wave that gracefully curves overhead. Moving past the foredeck lounge, steps lead down to a safely enclosed foredeck nestled within cutaway coamings. This area serves as an excellent workspace for the crew, offering ample space and security for handling lines and the anchor. However, it's not just functional; it's also sublime for guests, offering a secluded and intimate retreat in the bows, surrounded by exquisite design and top-of-the-line yachting hardware.

Princess X95 deck

This blend of lifestyle and practicality is evident throughout the decks, exemplified by the expansive deck storage lockers and twin lifeboat pods integrated into the upper aft deck's wet bar modules, strategically designed for direct deployment outboard.

Upper & Lower Deck Class

In most X95 configurations, the upper aft deck remains open, inviting free-standing lounge furniture to occupy the space, while the dining area is nestled beneath the superstructure overhang, in closer proximity to the interior. An ingeniously hidden awning discreetly extends to cover approximately half of the deck, ensuring sun-seekers always have a shaded retreat. On the main deck aft, a defined layout offers a sense of spaciousness beyond the yacht's beam dimensions, with options for conventional dining setups and various wet bar designs to suit diverse preferences.

Princess X95 transom lounge, beach club

Additional choices await on the swim platform. Standard equipment includes the 'Transformer' platform, a versatile hydraulic lift serving as both a 1000kg tender launch and recovery system, and a watersports terrace extending up to 6m (20ft) or semi-submerging. With the stern bustling with activity, opting for a mini lounge in the transom proves practical. Although it encroaches slightly into the crew quarters, an adjoining door grants the crew direct access, mitigating any inconvenience. Moreover, the standard yacht boasts a storage garage capable of accommodating a PWC.

Value For Money

Princess spares no expense in outfitting its largest yacht to date, providing ample amenities including air-conditioning, navigation equipment, and a meticulous fit-out for owners' pleasure. Notably, despite its expansive outdoor areas, the X95 surprises with its high specification, featuring rich teak covering every inch of its decks as standard.

princess X95 engine room

The engine room showcases Princess's commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Equipped with twin 40kW generators, a hydraulic system, a water-maker, and a fuel-cleaning system, it provides a robust and reliable foundation for serious cruising endeavors.

Princess X95 design

These details underpin a yacht that is undeniably spacious, well-crafted, and technically advanced, offering clever and exceptionally comfortable design both inside and out. With the potential for up to five cabins, two salons, and semi-custom finishing options, it presents a high-volume, high-value package that exceeds expectations.

Princess is fully aware of the success of the X Class design, evident in their recent launch of the new X80 and the upcoming Y95, inspired by the acclaimed X95 but featuring an open flybridge instead of an enclosed bridge. While Princess has not officially announced additional X models, it wouldn't be surprising to see more in the future. For now, let's appreciate the impressive and incredibly spacious package offered by the X Class yachts.

Reasons to Buy

  • Vast upper deck with salon
  • Up to five ensuite cabins
  • 2000nm range with extended tanks
  • Main deck Owner's stateroom or country kitchen
  • Excellent standard spec

Things to Consider

  • Challenging design, but boy does it deliver

It speaks volumes about the diversity of the new yacht market that the X95 can have so many rivals. The birth of the SUV design is now joined by yachts that, like the X Class, defy any convention or type, mixing high-volume and maximum deck space to incredible effect. It’s a wild and wonderful world full of stylistic contrasts but with every yacht here fully focused on the Owner.

One of the most obvious rivals is also a very different yacht. The 30m (99ft) Ferretti 1000 has lots in common with the X95, including dimensions, performance, a massive deck salon, main deck Owner’s stateroom and four guest cabins. But, it’s also a flybridge yacht with no upper lounge. Given the upper deck is one of the Princess’ defining features, that makes the Ferretti a possible outsider in this field.

If that upper deck lounge is important to you, there are plenty of yachts to consider. The Wally Why200 reflects the more practical course this Italian design-powerhouse is now plotting. Of course, the Why200 still looks fantastic, with a cohesive, sophisticated design that adds a good dose of Wally stealth-chic. Inside, the main deck Owner’s cabin is the stuff of dreams, the three or four guest cabins are all impressive. The upper deck features a vast aft terrace and a cool lounge set within the glass superstructure. There is also some very useable 20-knot performance from quadruple pod drives. The Wally isn’t as big as the X95 overall but it is excellent in key areas.

Another design triumph, the Sanlorenzo SX88 has a minimalist interior design full of cool and calm Italian lifestyle. There are numerous layout options, particularly across the main salon, with four or five-cabins layout and a main deck Owner’s stateroom. Again the SX88 can’t match the X95 on overall space or the sheer number of places to enjoy inside or out. But it does look sensational.

If size is important, the Numarine 32XP is the kind of yacht that likes to make 40m vessels feel inadequate. It looks massive, with a tall, powerful SUV design delivering a bridge deck with a lounge and huge aft terrace. The foredeck, upper and main deck aft are all big, as are the main deck Owner’s cabin and four guest quarters. The serious explorer looks are backed up by a massive 4000nm range.

We may have saved the best until last in the new Azimut Magellano 30 Metri. We don’t have much information on this model but it looks sensational (if the Thunderbirds had a yacht it would look like this) and packs a proper bridge deck with a massive, full-beam terrace. Inside a main-deck Owner’s stateroom is joined by four ensuite guest cabins below. Performance is expected to be around 20knots.

Princess X95 Superfly: The making of a very modern superyacht

  • Superyachts
  • Top stories

With exclusive access to the designers and naval architects behind the X Class range, MBY reveals what it takes to get from drawing board to dipping the hull...

At the Düsseldorf Boat Show in 2018, MBY editor Hugo and I were ushered to a secret room at the back of the Princess Yachts stand. Our mobile phones and notepads were taken from us before being sealed away inside a code-protected locker and we were led through to a dimly lit room occupied by little more than a glass display case in its centre.

Here, in a private space reserved for the eyes of the press and VIP customers, was a scale model of the X95 Superfly, an entirely new type of Princess and a glimpse into a bold future that looked to push the boundaries of what is achievable in a 30-metre yacht. What does it take to get from that point to the moment where the yacht touches water for the first time, though?

It starts with an idea and a challenge from Princess Yachts’ CEO Anthony Sheriff to his design team: “What’s new”? The former boss of McLaren cars wants to begin a new project with the focus on how it will offer something fresh and different, not only in comparison to competitors but to existing models in the Princess range.

The swooping lines down the aft quarters mirror other models in the Princess range

The shipyard already has an established and well-received line-up of semi-custom yachts in its stable in the form of the M Class range so the X Class brief was to offer superior internal volume on a similar waterline length with the emphasis on comfortable and efficient long-distance cruising.

“It’s always exciting starting a new project,” says Andy Lawrence, Princess’s director of design. “The main challenge of this yacht was its proportion. At 95ft long, to be able to get the main saloon and a huge flybridge with an air-conditioned sky lounge encased on top is a challenging proportion to work with.

“From quite an early stage we realised we had the chance to do a new layout that we haven’t looked at before. The proportions meant we had to think again when we penned first profiles, it needed to be something completely different. “There is a design triangle that’s going on with our in-house design team, Olesinski, and we’ve recently introduced Pininfarina into that mix.”

Princess Y78 yacht tour: The biggest boat you can run without crew

Princess s78 yacht tour: space and grace on the flagship of the s class range, meeting the challenge.

Once the idea for the X95 has been established a brief is sent to Princess’s long standing design partners Olesinski Design in Cowes and Pininfarina in Turin where the teams get to work generating a raft of different concepts that will ultimately be whittled down and presented back to Princess.

In total, Olesinski estimates that over 12,000 of their man-hours went into this project over a three-year period. “From our office alone we created more than 20 different design proposals,” explains Olesinki’s head of design Jonathan Cantrell. “The X95 presented such a unique opportunity and Princess wan’t entirely sure of exactly where it wanted to go with the project so there were lots of different ideas on the table.”

Cantrell joined Olesinksi 13 years ago and has designed 15 Princesses in that time from small V Class boats right up to the 40-metre yacht. Why is the X95 so different to anything he and the team have designed for Princess previously? “This is the first true tri-deck that we’ve been involved with and it’s definitely groundbreaking for Princess,” he says. “Its internal volume sets it apart, this has always been a big thing where every millimeter counts but the X95 takes this to the extreme.”

princess-x95-superyacht-Foredeck-sketches-credit-olesinski-design

Olesinksi’s sketches show the evolution of the glazing around the forward end of the main deck

Adding to the complexity of the job was the consideration that the Princess X95 would be platform sharing with the Y95, a more traditional alternative to the X Class created using the same hull and lower deck but with a totally different main deck and more traditional flybridge configuration up top.

“This clearly adds constraints,” Cantrell explains. “We didn’t have the flexibility in the backbone of the yacht that we would usually have but the existence of the more traditional Y95 allowed us to be even more bold with the X95 in not having to adhere to the usual Princess look. “It’s a very different proposition to your traditional Princess so it’s a case of finding a new look that still has the essence of the flowing lines that we developed over the last 14 years.”

Peerless proportions

As well as presenting a styling challenge, the Princess X95’s height combined with a relatively short waterline length lead Olesinksi’s head of naval architecture Gerard Grandcourt to employ new techniques in drawing the yacht’s wave-piercing hull.

princess-x95-superyacht-concept-credit-olesinski-design

Poring over the X95 sketches at the Olesinski Design office

“We needed to make sure that we had the waterline beam to support the height and weight because we knew it was going to be a challenge,” he explains. “We went to Ocean Basin at Haslar and built a free-running scale model of the hull to test manoeuvrability and ensure it was safe. It’s the first time we’ve done tank testing with a model that isn’t tethered; free-running models are usually in the realms of superyachts and commercial shipping.”

The X95’s hull shape is significantly different to the M Class range, a result of the drive for efficiency in Princess’s brief. “We wanted to push the boundaries with this hull and keep an open mind,” Grandcourt explains. “We took a look at a variety of different hull forms and used our in-house computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software along with artificial intelligence and machine learning to help run whole sets of hull tests with different parameters but we are always focused on the sea-keeping benefits.”

The results speak for themselves. Compare the Princess X95 with the yard’s own 30 Metre, whose dimensions are almost identical, and you find that with 1,400hp less in total the X95 will achieve the same top speed as the 30 Metre and likely be a whisker faster at the top end. This is purely down to the efficiency of the hull shape and, as a result, the X95’s engines are using 20% less power at 16 knots.

princess-x95-superyacht-exterior-running-shot-rendering

With 1,400hp less, the X95 will achieve the same top speed as the 30 Metre due to the efficiency of the hull shape

“Sixteen knots is a good cruise speed for her but she is very comfortable at full speed where we have seen 23.5 knots with a 90% fuel load,” Grandcourt adds.

Out of the water you notice joins along the forepeak, piercing section of the hull and transom, which hint at a cunning way to duck beneath the 78ft 7in (24m) threshold and avoid a plethora of rigorous regulations regarding both construction and the running of the yacht. These bolt-ons allow the length overall to stretch to 95ft 5in (29.1m) but ensure that the waterline length of the hull sneaks just below the regulatory margin at 78ft 6in (23.95m).

The X95 demonstrates a significant increase in the amount of deck layouts available in comparison to the 30 Metre. This is driven by customers’ desire to have more control over the layout of their yacht but it’s not easy for a production builder to offer bespoke designs on a model that it would hope to build between six to nine units of per year.

princess-x95-superyacht-Hardtop-sketches-credit-olesinski-design

Incorporating the sky lounge was one of the major challenges for the design team

The 30 Metre offers a simple choice between three or four cabins on the lower deck but the X95 has the flexibility of three different layout options on all three decks. The team has tried to account for the requests they predict most customers will ask for but even outside of these standard configurations Princess is willing to accommodate more detailed customisation.

Hull number one, for example, splits the lower deck VIP between a cabin and a gym as opposed to the standard full-beam double, has bespoke furniture in the saloon and master suite and a projector that drops down from the overhang on the flybridge so that the owner and his guests can watch films alfresco.

“We started from scratch with the interior and set a completely new styling language with this yacht,” says Jonny Warden, principal designer at Princess. “What we tried to do was to wrap the furniture into the geometry of the yacht to create a fluid movement of how you would transition through it.”

The glazed area is enormous – unprecedented in comparison to anything Princess has done before

Perfect flow

Wandering around the soon-to-be delivered Hull No 1 at Princess’s South Yard facility, the effect is impressive with gently swooped furniture and bulkheads leading you through an interior that will be bathed in natural light. The glazed area is enormous – unprecedented in anything Princess has done before.

The connection between the deck levels is striking and it’s when you take the internal staircase, just aft of the galley, to the upper deck that the benefits of a true tri-deck design are most obvious. That word “flow” comes to mind again.

Even with rain pounding off the roof of the South Yard shed, I can picture drifting around this deck, reclining on one of the sun loungers, taking a seat at the circular dining table, dropping into the optional foredeck hot tub or retiring to the air-conditioned sky lounge to cool off and watch the sport. The way these three different areas on the same deck connect to each other seamlessly is the essence of what makes this design so clever.

“We couldn’t have foreseen from the outset what this would have looked like at the end,” adds Grandcourt. “That’s the beauty of the design process, you begin with a blank sheet of paper and end up with something that is remarkable, that no one in the world has seen before – a brand new concept.” All that’s left to do now is drive it. Watch this space…

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

IOR 1/2 ton. Available with a taller rig. I(IG): 38.60’ / 11.77m J: 10.50’ / 3.20m P: 41.90’ / 12.77m E: 14.25’ / 4.34m

Bhutan Celebrates Opening Its Borders to Tourists

In 1974, the remote Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan opened its borders to tourists, all the while prioritizing sustainable travel and cultural preservation. At first, travel was arranged through official tour operators, which helped keep the numbers down, but in recent years, independent travelers have been able to apply for visa. Here’s what you need to know about traveling to Bhutan .

J. cole 'trans' bars backlash ... taking shot at k dot's 'auntie diaries'.

J. Cole 's rap battle with Kendrick Lamar might bring some new heat for the Dreamvillain, who's now being accused of dropping transphobic lyrics in his clap back at Kendrick.

Cole bombs K Dot on "7 Minute Drill," the last track of "Might Delete Later" ... the surprise album he dropped Friday -- but fans are also dissecting his bars on the track, "Pi."

Without warning Cole targeted a rapper who dropped a trash album, and spit the damning lyrics ... "They plead the fifth, I'm seeing hints of a trans fella/In cancel culture's vicinity, he's no killer, trust me/Beneath his chosen identity, there is still a pussy, period.”

There's no overt mention of Kendrick on "Pi" ... but there's no doubt about his target on "7 Minute Drill," which labels Kendrick's "Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers" album tragic -- and many fans think that attack is also based in trans hate.

We previously reported how 'Mr. Morale' highlighted Kendrick owning up to past ignorance on the track "Auntie Diaries," which finds the Compton rapper opening up about accepting a trans relative.

Fans think Cole still has some growing to do, and let him have it on social media ... letting him know his "Pi" lyrics are "lazy, bigoted nonsense."

On a positive note for Cole ... Usher seems to be feeling the track.

Lawsuit naming Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs as co-defendant alleges his son sexually assaulted woman on yacht

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A lawsuit that names  Sean “Diddy” Combs  as a co-defendant alleges that his son Christian “King” Combs sexually assaulted a woman working on a yacht chartered by his father.

The suit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court says Sean Combs created the circumstances that led to the assault and paid to cover it up afterward. It’s the latest in a  series of lawsuits  accusing the producer and music mogul of sexual misconduct, and it comes amid a federal sex trafficking investigation that led Homeland Security agents to  raid his homes in Los Angeles and Miami  last week.

Grace O’Marcaigh, who worked as a crew member and a bartender on the boat, says that in late December 2022, Christian Combs pressured her to drink tequila that she believes was spiked with other drugs. He groped her breasts and genitals and attempted to force her to perform oral sex, the suit alleges.

The Associated Press does not typically name people who say they have been sexually abused unless they come forward publicly, as O’Marcaigh has done. She also consented to being named through her attorneys.

Aaron Dyer, an attorney for Sean and Christian Combs, called the lawsuit “lewd and meritless.”

“We will be filing a motion to dismiss this outrageous claim,” Dyer said in a statement.

Dyer called the investigation that brought  last week’s raids  “nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits.”

Sean Combs, who chartered the yacht throughout the holidays in 2022, “had full control of the staff and premises” and created circumstances where her assault was not only tolerated but encouraged.

O’Marcaigh, who was 25 at the time, said when Christian Combs, then 24, came aboard late one night, he appeared heavily intoxicated and began giving her inappropriate attention.

She said the two were in a music studio on board the ship, where producer  Rodney Jones, who filed his own lawsuit  in February, was told to be available around the clock for Sean Combs to work on his next album.

O’Marcaigh said in the suit that Christian Combs was insistent that she take shots of tequila, and she drank out of obligation.

The suit alleges he became increasingly aggressive with her, violently grabbing her arm as she tried to get out of the situation then groping her. The drinks made everything blurry, unusually quickly, the suit says.

Microphones in the studio, where Jones was told to capture everything, recorded their exchange, and the lawsuit includes a transcript where O’Marcaigh demands that Christian Combs stop touching her.

The suit alleges that he later continued the assault in the ship’s movie theater, which was used as a spare sleeping area and where she was attempting to find a place to spend the night because the rooms were all taken, before another crew member appeared and he stopped.

O’Marcaigh told the yacht’s captain about the assault the following morning, but she alleges that after Combs gave him a large amount of cash the same day, the captain failed to meaningfully investigate or take any action.

The suit says O’Marcaigh was eventually fired in retaliation and has since been unable to find work in the music industry where she had planned to build a career. It says since 2022, she has suffered severe emotional trauma.

The lawsuit seeks damages to be determined at trial.

Christian Combs is also a musical artist whose song “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” with Kodak Black topped Billboard’s Mainstream R&B Hip-Hop charts in 2022. He was at his father’s Los Angeles home during last week’s searches, during which he and his brother were handcuffed but not arrested.

The producer Jones’ federal lawsuit, filed in February by Tyrone Blackburn, the same attorney as O’Marcaigh’s suit, includes allegations that Sean Combs coerced him to solicit prostitutes and pressured him to have sex with them.

Dyer’s statement said the newest lawsuit is “filled with the same kind of manufactured lies and irrelevant facts we’ve come to expect from Blackburn.”

He pointed out that U.S. District Judge Denise L. Cote criticized Blackburn in a separate lawsuit on Wednesday and referred him to a disciplinary committee for a “pattern of behavior” where he “improperly files cases in federal court to garner media attention, embarrass defendants with salacious allegations, and pressure defendants to settle quickly.”

Blackburn responded in an email that “a referral is not a sanction” and the statement from Combs’ lawyer was an attempt to “deflect and distract.”

“Christian Combs sexually assaulted Ms. O’Marcaigh, and we have it on tape,” Blackburn said.

Several lawsuits  have brought public scrutiny to the music and business mogul, beginning with a November suit from his former protégé and girlfriend, the  R&B singer Cassie , which alleged years of sexual abuse, including rape. It was  settled the following day .

Combs and his attorneys have denied all of the lawsuits’ allegations.

Combs, a three-time Grammy winner and the founder of Bad Boy Records, is among the most influential hip-hop producers and executives of the past three decades. He turned his hip-hop empire into a broader business empire that includes  private-label spirits , fashion, and a  TV network .
