Regatta Yachttimers
An overview of sailing regatta watches.
The only French brand in this regatta-yachttimer overview is Yema. Founded in 1948 in Besançon (Doubs) by Henry Louis Belmont, the company distinguished itself in the very beginning by creating the first automatic chronometers manufactured entirely in France. The brand became fairly popular in France in the 1960’s and 1970’s with both consumer and military sales, including the watches related to the French space missions!
On March 3, 1967 Henry L. Blum of Montres Yema S.A. filed a patent for a ‘Watch for Yachting and Underwater use’ . You can download the complete Swiss patent (CH 483.047) as a PDF here , or here if you prefer English (USA 3,427,800).
Yema patent US3,427,800 filed by H.L. Blum.
This resulted in the introduction of the Yema Yachtingraf in 1966. All together 6 different models (7 if you count type 6 in standard or jumbo case as two) of the Yachtingraf were sold between 1966 and 1970. Type 1 (Valjoux 92), type 2 ( Valjoux 7733 or 7734) and type 3 (Valjoux 7734 with date) have a subdial counting the seconds at 9 o’clock, and an oversized 30 minutes subdial at 3 o’clock, divided into 6 differently coloured segments representing 5 minutes each.

- Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7734 movement.
Type 4 and 5, the Yachtingraf Croisière models, have an extra third subdial at 6 o’clock with a 12 hour register. By means of a red cross over this subdial it counts double, up to 24 hours. Type 6 has an indicator disk underneath the dial, for an optimum countdown.
And the Yema Yachtingraf versions 4, 5 and 6.
Model: Yema Yachtingraf Croissière – type 4.
- Reference: 92 001L. Silver subdial at 9 o’clock, third subdial at 6 o’clock,
- Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 72 movement.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Régate – type 6.
- Reference: with a special indicator disk in stead of a hand.
- Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7733S movement.
- Case size: either normal case Ø 39 mm or jumbo size Ø 44 mm.
- Year: 1970.
The Yema Yachtingraf Régate was available in two different case sizes, the first one with the black logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 39 mm and with a tachymeter along the outer edge of the dial, and a second version with the blue logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 44 mm. The last one is also referred to as Régate – Jumbo.
How the countdown function works:
Definitely type 6 is the most interesting one. It has a 15 minutes register at 3 o’clock, and a smal indicator disk that rotates under a special cut-out in the dial. The indicator disk moves every 30 seconds, jumping half a minute further to the start of the race.
The Yema Yachtingraf Régate has the crown to set the time at 3 o’clock and two pushers for the countdown function. One pusher at 2 o’clock for start/stop, and one pusher at 4 o’clock for reset.
After a reset the countdown subdial shows 1-2-3-4-5 and red in the 6th small window. When the chronograph is activated at the first gunshot the countdown starts and the big white sweep hand is set in motion clockwise. After 30 seconds the indicator disk moves half a minute, and so it does again after 60 seconds, now showing 0-1-2-3-4. A slide bar shows the first minute in blue. After the first 5 minutes of the countdown, when the second gunshot is fired, the 6th window in the dial takes over the countdown: 5 more minutes to go.
Again one minute later, with another 4 more minutes to go, the first window is showing red. Three minutes later, only 1 more minute to go, and 4 windows showing red. Then, as the final gunshot sounds, all 5 windows are red and the 6th window shows 0. Off you go!
Yema advertisement with the Yachtingraf-Croisière.
Variations:
The Yema Yachtingraf’s are unmistakable recognizable by their big colorful minutes countdown subdial, which is also well described in the patent listed above. And although they are not related to Yema in any way, several smaller watch brands have used the same subdial for a Yachting version of their watch. Probably with a license by Yema for the dial layout. The only exeption is the brand Le Jour, which was actually the North American rebranded distributer for Yema in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Here are some examples:
Branded Alsta Le Jour Yachtingraf , Le Jour Yachtingraf (US version) and Thermidor De Luxe Yachtingraf :
Branded Puerto Azul (without it’s bezel), Technos Sportsgraph (with a Landeron 248 movement) and Relide Spacemaster :
Branded Yachting Chronograph (Valjoux 7733), Jaques-Droz and Gallet :
Branded Datzward Seamagnum (Valjoux 7730), Lider Yachtingraf (Valjoux 7733) and La Martine (Valjoux 7733):
Branded Lunich Watch (Valjoux 7733), Dichi Watch (Valjoux 7730) and Wingo :
x – x – x – x – x – x – x – x – x – x
In the mid 1970’s the first quartz movements were introduced, and also Yema decided to invest heavily in the research en development of new models with a quartz movement. This resulted among others in the second (quartz) generation of the Yema Yachtingraf in 1977.
In 1982 John Henry Belmont Jr. takes over as CEO of Yema from his father. But he has other plans with the company, and decided to sell Yema in 1988 to the Japanese Seiko Watch Corporation. In 1995 Yema became a subsidiary to the Hattori-Seiko group under the name Yema S.A. It’s obvious that many of the Seiko movements are used in a Yema watch during that period.
In 1992 Yema is sponsoring the French team with skipper and helmsman Marc Pajot as competitor fort her America’s Cup (with yacht Ville de Paris). For that occasion Yema launches the America’s Cup France , with a Seiko 8M35 quartz regatta movement.

And a third movement with two pushers at 8 and 10 o’clock:

In 2004 the Yema brand is purchased by its CEO Louis Eric Beckensteiner, with financial help of the French Montres Ambre, a watchmaking and jewelry company. That makes Yema a 100% French watch brand again, with the name being changed into ‘Yema Horlogère Maison Francaise 1948’.
For their 70th anniversary Yema announces in 2018 the Heritage collection, to pay tribute to the brand’s most iconic timepieces: a Superman, a Rallygraf, a Yachtingraf and a Flygraf. The Yema Yachtingraf Heritage is an almost identical copy of the Yachtingraf Crossière (type 5) from 1969. The first 1948 watches will be numbered.

A Bold, Sea-Worthy Chronograph From the 1960s Returns
Yema’s new limited edition is a (mostly) faithful recreation of the 1960s original.
By Andrew Connor
French watchmaker Yema is not well-known outside of enthusiasts circles, where their vintage pieces are considered both iconic and great value for money, but the brand is still manufacturing timepieces today. In fact, it’s Yema’s 70th anniversary, and the company celebrating with a series of super-accurate reissues of some of its most iconic vintage models. We’ve already seen this with the brand’s Superman Heritage , but now Yema is reviving the Yachtingraf, an old-school regatta chronograph with a hell of a lot of charm.
Yema introduced the Yachtingraf in the late ’60s, and it was notable for its bold minutes register. The colorful scale within actually has a particular purpose: in a regatta, a five-minute countdown is required before the race, and the scale makes it easy to read off minutes on the chronograph function in five-minute intervals. I don’t doubt that very few people reading this would actually use the regatta counter for its intended purpose (though if you do, kudos to you and your sweet yacht), but the red-white-and-blue register undoubtedly looks cool as hell.
Like the Superman Heritage, this new reissue remains fairly faithful to the original. The colorful registers remain intact, as does the rotating bezel. Even the case is just 39mm wide, only a smidge bigger than the 38mm original , and it’s still water-resistant to 100 meters. There is one major departure, though: an automatic Valjoux 7750 replaces the original watch’s manual-winding Valjoux caliber. Given that the 7750 is well-known for its chunky proportions, the resulting watch is a bit over 15mm thick.
Still, this is an excellent execution of a classic design, and the best part is that it’s relatively reasonably priced: you can pick it up for just $3,274, though Yema will only produce 1,948 examples.

Yema Yachtingraf Regatta Timer 'White Ship'
Why We Love it
We've been fans of Yema for quite some time. While you don't see too many Yachtingrafs on the market in general, this specific variant is as rare as they come.
This particular piece is a Régate, or Regatta Timer, which Yema launched in 1969. Unlike the previous models of Yachtingraf, the Régate featured a modified Valjoux 7733 as its drivetrain, which showed the regatta countdown in numerical format. Moreover, the Régate is the first Yachtingraf to feature crown guards, as well as a ship on the dial, giving rise to the nickname “white ship.”
As rare as it is distinctive, only about 25 of these awesome watches have emerged on the commercial market, so catch this one now before it sails away.

The New Yema Urban Sport Trilogy Brings Back Three of the Brand’s Icons
The flygraf, rallygraf and yachtingraf names are back with accessible prices and 1980s-inspired cases..
While the Superman, a skindiver piece , is by far the most emblematic model of French watchmaking brand Yema , three other names might ring a bell to some enthusiasts. All designed as professional instruments in the late 1960s or early 1970s, the Flygraf (pilot’s watch), Rallygraf (driver’s watch) and Yachtingraf (regatta watch) are now deeply rooted in Yema’s collection and were recently re-edited. But today, while sticking to the same names, Yema offers something different: a trilogy of accessible sports watches all built around the same technical base, yet with significant differences regarding the display to pay tribute to the vintage Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf. Let’s have a look at the new Yema Urban Sport Trilogy.
Let’s first go back in time… Yema was founded in 1948 by Henry Louis Belmont, a trained watchmaker who graduated from the Ecole Nationale d’Horlogerie de Besançon (National School of Watchmaking of Besançon) in the French Jura, near the Swiss border. A pioneer in the industrialisation of watchmaking in France, the brand grew to become, in the mid-1960s, the largest exporter of timepieces in the country. Success came mainly from one watch, the Superman, a skindiver launched in 1963 . Later, other important models were created, most of them answering specific professional needs – alongside, of course, classic collections for daily wear.
Among dozens of sports watches, three names have gained particular fame. All designed with a dedicated mission, the original versions of these watches are now part of the most collectable items of the brand. Named Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf, they were dedicated to pilots, rally drivers and regatta sailors, respectively. They were mostly built around a chronograph movement with a display incorporating useful elements such as a navigation slide rule, a tachymeter scale or a regatta countdown timer. Today, these three models are back in the collection but with different duties than the originals. With the Urban Sport Trilogy, Yema wants to offer a powerful design with dedicated functions but at an accessible price. And that meant getting rid of the chronograph function to focus solely on the displays and bezels.
All three watches in the Yema Urban Sport Trilogy, meaning the new Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf, are built around the same technical architecture, starting with a case that is inspired by one of the brand’s 1980s sports watches. This angular and barrel-shaped case can’t hide a certain “luxury sports watch” vibe but offers something sportier than, for instance, Yema’s Urban Traveller collection – this one was clearly intended to fight in the sporty-chic integrated bracelet market.
Sharper, more angular and more robust overall, the case used for this trilogy has a cool retro vibe and great proportions. At 39mm in diameter, 11.70mm in thickness and 47mm in length, its proportions are as appealing as they are comfortable. The flat top surface is home to a raised rotating bezel, framing a flat sapphire crystal. The crown is large, and despite being a classic push-pull construction, water-resistance is rated at a comfortable 100m – due mainly to the solid steel screwed back. The case seems nicely finished with a combination of vertically brushed flat surfaces and polished bevels.
With identical cases, you might wonder what differentiates the Rallygraf from a Flygraf or a Yachtingraf. Well, it all comes down to the bezel inserts, inner flanges and dials. All three models have a distinct personality, harking back to the origins of their respective ancestors. The Rallygraf, originally a watch dedicated to automobile racing enthusiasts, has a bidirectional bezel with a tachymeter scale printed on a black aluminium insert. The dial continues in the same vein with a white-on-black racing theme, including checkered flags at 6 o’clock and squarish markers and hands. The red seconds hand accentuates the racing side of the model.
With its blue dial, the Yachtingraf doesn’t hide its nautical origins. This discreet member of the Urban Sport Trilogy comes with a matte blue stepped dial, silvered hands and applied markers. The inner flange hosts a classic seconds track, and the central seconds hand has a nice open-tip arrow design. What makes this version unique is the aluminium insert of the bidirectional bezel with its 15-minute regatta countdown scale. It works in tandem with the minute hand and allows precise countdown timings for regatta-style races.
The final model in Yema’s Urban Sport Trilogy is named Flygraf and is dedicated to pilots. Its brushed black dial offers great contrast with the white hands and applied makers. Alongside the bold yellow accents, the main feature of this model is its rotating bezel that, together with the inner flange, allows for a multitude of in-flight calculations – average speed, average fuel consumption of an aircraft, or even converting nautical miles to miles, and miles to kilometres.
All three models are powered by the brand’s proprietary Yema2000 calibre, an alternative to ETA and Sellita movements, which was conceived in France and is assembled in the French Jura (in Morteau). Running at a 4Hz frequency, it boasts 42h of power reserve and is regulated in 4 positions to a precision of -/+ 10 seconds/day. The version used here is the no-date one.
The Flygraf, Rallygraf and Yachtingraf are presented on a 9-link stainless steel bracelet with a double security folding clasp and a design inspired by the 1980s or a leather strap with a steel pin buckle (black leather for the Flygraf, blue leather for the Yachtingraf and perforated brown leather for the Rallygraf). Either way, the 20mm lug width will offer a lot of possibilities.
All watches of this Trilogy are now available for order at EUR 829 on a leather strap and EUR 890 on a steel bracelet. There is also a 10-piece limited collector’s case containing all three models ( EUR 2,669 ). For more details and orders, please visit yema.com .

Loving the watches, but good luck doing yachting, rally driving and flying in an urban area… Especially the Yachtingraf looks fantastic.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the Yema brand however I’ve always been under the impression that reviews of the company/quality have been a bit hit and miss?

Yema Takes to the Land, Air, and Sea with their New Urban Sport Collection
The concept of “air”, “sea”, “land” watches continues to capture the imagination of enthusiasts. Some even build collections of watches that cover each base. The idea stems from the focused tool watches of yesteryear that were deliberate and intentional in their design languages in order to accomplish very specific goals. Yema leans into this idea in introducing a new trio of watches under their Urban Sport moniker. Within the new line, each watch tackles one component of air, sea, and land, with the Flygraf, Yachtingraf, and Rallygraf, respectively.
The Flygraf dominates the air and is the punchiest of all three in color scheme. It is marked with an airplane icon at six o’clock and features a combination of inner and outer multifunction bezels for calculating speed, fuel, and other conversions. It has thicker, more legible hands befitting of a pilot’s watch and a brushed black dial designed to pay homage to vintage airplane fuselages. The second hand in particular is a bright orange that matches the inner bezel for maximum contrast. As a whole, the dial is cleaner and simpler, and the hour markers are slightly rounded.
The Yachtingraf is designed for, you guessed it, yachting. With a gradient dial and thinner hands filled with cream lume, it is the most overtly vintage-inspired of the three. The Yachtingraf has, unsurprisingly, a bi-direcitonal graduated bezel with special 15-minute markings to signal regatta race starts. Its second hand is in silver and features an enlarged arrow – not unlike some GMT hands. The inner chapter ring and hour and minute markers are reminiscent of mid-century divers. If you didn’t know better you could have guessed this was a new old stock diver from the 60s or 70s.
The Rallygraf was designed for racing in case the twin checkered flags on the dial didn’t make it obvious. This is a callback to the Yema Rallygraf watches of the 1970s, which also featured the same image. Here, a bi-directional tachymeter bezel in conjunction with a fixed reference inner bezel allows for speed calculations. This watch in particular is nearly monochrome – the only pop of color is the red second hand. The blocky hour markers and stark white lume on the hour and minute hands make for a busier, though not clumsy, dial layout.
All three watches feature the automatically-winding YEMA2000 caliber providing a daily accuracy of +/- 10 seconds under 42 hours of power reserve. All the cases are thoughtfully finished with a combination of brushed topsides and polished bevels. Water resistance is 100m. The Urban Sport line can be configured on model-specific straps, a $829 proposition, while on the stainless steel bracelet they are $890. The Flygraf, Yachtingraf, and Rallygraf are all available now. Learn more at Yema.com .

Vintage Yema Yachtingraf Regatta Timer Chronograph Valjoux 7733 - SOLD
Despite being a lesser known mostly domestic French brand founded in 1948, Yema has produced a number of classic watch designs. Signatures such as the Sous Marine and Flygraf are interesting and collectible vintage tool watches, but nothing compares to Yema's most revered watch, the Yachtingraf. Offered here is a second execution model powered by a Valjoux 7733 with a straight lug case in similar dimensions to the first generation Heuer Autavia.
The Yachtingraf debuted in 1966, a Valjoux powered chronograph with a unique patent-pending large regatta timer at 3 o'clock housed inside a perfectly sized 38mm straight lug steel case. The oversized colorful subdial has become the signature feature of the Yachtingraf, and the splash of bright color contrasting the black dial rounds out a handsome sports watch that manages to be fun, unique, and versatile.
The Yachtingraf is one of the most interesting and unique chronographs of the 60s. We have quite the affinity for quirky sporting chronographs, especially those used for specific purposes as they are a callback to an analog time where watches were used as genuine tools. It of course helps when the design is as eye-catching as the Yachtingraf.
Take a look at the photos and our condition description below:

OUR STORY - OPT
Yema's story, 1948 - henry louis belmont .
In 1948 Henry Louis Belmont, a methodical and pioneer French watchmaker, created his own watchmaking company under the name of Yema , Mr Belmont graduated top of his class from the National Watchmaking School of Besançon in 1931. The story goes that the name of the brand was born of the imagination of a teenager in a school contest organised by Henry Louis Belmont himself. Without realising it, the young student imagined a name that would become synonymous with fine French watchmaking.
1963 - YEMA SUPERMAN, THE BIRTH OF A MYTH
We must go back to 1963 to discover the very first Yema Superman . A watch first developed for diving professionals thanks to its 300 meters waterproofing and safety brake stop (or bezel-lock) made it distinctive and unique. Considered indestructible, the Superman was at the time chosen by the French Air Force to equip its pilots.
1966 - BIRTH OF THE YACHTINGRAF
Yema produced in 1966, the first Yema Yachtingraf , especially designed for the sailing world. This automatic chronograph (Valjoux movement), waterproof to 200 meters, indicated the regatta time. There have been up to 6 different versions of this model over the years.
1966 - BIRTH OF THE RALLYGRAF
The first model of Yema Rallygraf, also saw the day in 1966 and was especially designed for the world of car racing. One of these chronographs was worn by Formula 1 driver Mario Andretti. There exist several variations of dials for this mythical model.
1966 - YEMA INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION
In the late 60's Yema became the leading French Watch Exporter for three years consecutively (1966, 1967 and 1968) with more than 500,000 watches sold every year across 50 countries.
1982 - FIRST FRENCH WATCH IN SPACE
In 1982 a French Spaceman, Jean-Loup Chrétien , flew from the Baikonour base for a 10-day trip into space. On his wrist, he wears the very first French watch in outer space, the Yema Spationaute 1 . In 1985 the Discovery shuttle takes off with on board Patrick Baudry and his Yema Spationaute II for the first Franco-American orbital flight mission.
1986 - NORTH POLE MISSION
In 1986, Yema joined Jean-Louis Etienne , a French adventurer during his 800 km solo trip across the North Pole, first human in history to achieve this. .A special tool-watch was created especially for the occasion. Resistant to extreme cold temperatures thanks to its titanium case, this model had a system to avoid the magnetic north and a sun's time for navigation.
2009 - ADVANCED IN-HOUSE CALIBER
After an investment of more than € 3 million and 4 years of Research & Development in 2011, Yema releases its in-house self-winding mechanical movement, the MBP1000 , which is entirely designed, developed and assembled in France at our Morteau workshops.
2017 - PROXIMA SPACE MISSION
French's 10th astronaut mission into space was called Proxima , in tribute to the nearest star of our Sun. In 2017, Yema and CNES work together again in creating a brand new model in honour of this new mission, the Yema Spacegraf .

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP
!{Model.Description}
The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.
The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.
The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.
Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

Equipped with a rotating bezel with a specific countdown marking for regatta racing starts, this new Yachtingraf is equipped with our in-house caliber, the YEMA2000.
Yema captures the vintage regatta chronograph vibe well, but the watch likely won't be mistaken for an actual vintage piece. Why? For starters, its 40mm brushed case is made of bronze, a material which simply wasn't "a thing" in watchmaking back then. There's also the fact that the chronograph subdial in question is at 9 o'clock ...
The Yema Yachtingraf line features quartz models starting at $279 and tops out with a limited edition automatic that can be pre-ordered for nearly ten-times that amount. ... they click their regatta timers for the countdown to the start. The legendary Yema Yachtingraf Croisiere released in 1969 returns in a new version almost identical to the original model. With its distinct black dial and its three emblematic sub-dials (hour and minute counters, regatta start timer countdown) and its 1/5 second central timer it accommodate a high-quality Swiss movement: the ETA Valjoux 7753.
Yema introduced the Yachtingraf in the late '60s, and it was notable for its bold minutes register. The colorful scale within actually has a particular purpose: in a regatta, a five-minute countdown is required before the race, and the scale makes it easy to read off minutes on the chronograph function in five-minute intervals.
Why This Watch Matters This Yema Yachtingraf is instantly recognizable with its colorful regatta counter and a neat sailboat motif on the dial. The Full Story Yema was founded by Henry Louis Belmont in 1948, and the Yachtingraf model was introduced in 1966. The watch was designed as a tool watch and primarily for a sole purpose. One of the sub-dials is there to assist in tracking the 15-minute ...
This Yema Yachtingraf is in excellent condition. The matte black dial is pristine and has no signs of discolouration or tarnishing. The red and blue colours of the regatta yachting subdial remain bright and all of the text on the dial is intact. The luminous material on both the dial and hands have aged and developed a nice patina.
Unlike the previous models of Yachtingraf, the Régate featured a modified Valjoux 7733 as its drivetrain, which showed the regatta countdown in numerical format. Moreover, the Régate is the first Yachtingraf to feature crown guards, as well as a ship on the dial, giving rise to the nickname "white ship."
While the Superman, a skindiver piece, is by far the most emblematic model of French watchmaking brand Yema, three other names might ring a bell to some enthusiasts. All designed as professional instruments in the late 1960s or early 1970s, the Flygraf (pilot's watch), Rallygraf (driver's watch) and Yachtingraf (regatta watch) are now deeply rooted in Yema's collection and were recently ...
Chronographs, divers, and regatta timers were just some of the fun pieces. They were also more affordable, and when the brand was resurrected several years ago, the formula continued. ... The Yema Yachtingraf Tourbillon Mareographe is an oddly refreshing release with an equally pleasing price. In either guise, it retails for US$9,990 ...
URBAN YACHTINGRAF. Yema. ... Its dual bezels add depth and functionality, with a bi-directional bezel featuring a 15-minute countdown for regatta race starts, what I'd consider a required tool ...

Radio Moscow: circa 1968. February 11, 2014. Many thanks to David Firth, who is kindly sharing shortwave radio recordings he made on his reel-to-reel recording equipment in the late 1960's. Firth is uncovering and digitizing these recordings as time allows. We are grateful for this recording of Radio Moscow, which Firth recorded in 1968.
