From Port to Paradise: The Pioneers in Superyacht Transport

super yacht transport

When you need your gleaming superyacht safely and securely moved halfway around the world, you call DYT - the pioneers in yacht transport.

In this first of three articles, we’re going behind the scenes with DYT, deep diving into the high-stakes world of luxury yacht transportation . In a service in which where there’s no room for error, we’ll find out the history of this fascinating company and learn what it takes to successfully cross oceans with some of the world’s most expensive yachts. And of course, you’ll meet DYT’s high-tech, gargantuan semi-submersible vessels and get a whistle-stop tour of their features.

Diving into DYT

DYT offers superyacht owners, captains, yacht builders, and charter companies, amongst others, a regularly scheduled yacht transport service aboard one of its semi-submersible vessels, to major ports and yachting destinations and events around the world.

DYT’s fleet of yacht carriers is fully owned, operated and crewed by DYT as a member of the Spliethoff Group, ensuring that the company retains complete control over the shipping schedule, the quality of its service and all commitments made to its clients. “That’s a big point of difference with us,” said DYT’s Gabriele Consiglieri . “Everything belongs to us. It means that we’re 100% sure of the service we’re selling and the commitments we’re making. If something happens - for example, a delay due to bad weather - we are in a position to take immediate countermeasures. We’re able to find solutions and aren’t totally at the mercy of external challenges and events.”

“Our clients enjoy a direct relationship with us,” he added, “They can look forward to clear and effective answers to their questions or needs. That’s a big selling point with us.”

The company’s head office is in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, while its commercial office is located in Monaco. It has additional offices in Genoa, Palma de Mallorca, and Amsterdam, as well as remote offices in Australia and New Zealand. Twenty shore-based staff are responsible for operations, marketing, sales and financial roles. DYT’s fleet of vessels, meanwhile, is crewed and technically supported by a global team of 1,500 people spanning both DYT and its parent group.

Power in people

Originally founded in 1987 as ‘Dockwise Yacht Transport’, the modern version of DYT took shape in 2013 when its current owners bought the company. The sale included the brand and the company’s vessels as well as the staff complement.

According to Gabriele, the decision to retain the existing staff when the company was purchased, is all part of DYT’s commitment to consistency in every part of its service. “By keeping the original staff, the company delivered continuity and consistency in our service and people. That adds tremendous value to the client’s experience,” he said. “When you’re such an established company and you’re known as the market leader, that operational continuity is key. No matter what happens, both the customer and the market, in general, know that we’re there for them and that we will be there when we say we will.”

Ocean-crossing credibility

DYT has built a formidable reputation for consistency thanks to its regular scheduling and port dates . Apart from its world-class service and unique, high-tech vessels, the company regards its scheduling consistency as its biggest selling point. “We sell a regular, solid solution for people in need of yacht transportation,” Gabriele explained. “We place our port dates around popular events, shows and seasons. If there’s a reason for the yachts to be somewhere, for example, the Monaco Grand Prix, the Cannes Festival or the MYBA Charter show, then we’ll structure our calendar around that to meet the requirements around those events.”

That scheduling consistency has built credibility and trust in the market, he explained. “Our clients know exactly what they’re getting because we’re always there - they get used to how we structure our service and in many cases, the workflow becomes somehow automatic.”

DYT 600x400 2

The submerging giants

When DYT was first established in the late ‘80s, the idea of transporting superyachts was a novelty that didn’t yet have dedicated vessels capable of doing the job. “It required reinventing semi-submersible vessels that had previously mainly been used by the offshore industry,” Gabriele noted. “These ships were then adapted to yacht transportation.”

Since then, a lot has changed. Today, DYT’s fleet consists of two very big, highly capable, high-tech ships specifically designed to safely carry superyachts across the ocean. M/V Yacht Express was launched in 2007 as the very first purpose-built yacht carrier. Designed to deliver a stellar experience for riders especially, it incorporated DYT’s two decades of experience and has served its customers loyally ever since.

DYT’s latest and greatest asset is M/V Yacht Servant . With 6,800 sqm of deck space for carrying yachts and the ability to accommodate yachts of various sizes plus tenders, with an average of 25 boats per sailing, she is even larger - and much wider - than M/V Yacht Express.

M/V Yacht Servant incorporates the company’s lessons learned from M/V Yacht Express and the demands of modern owners, captains and riders, to deliver a truly world-class service. “No other vessel can carry so many yachts at the same time,” Gabriele confirmed.

DYT 600x400 4

On board hospitality

Both the yachts and their riders are comprehensively accommodated on board Yacht Servant. Thanks to a constant supply of fresh and raw water as well as shore power from Yacht Servant, each yacht’s batteries are kept adequately charged at all times and its systems remain operational.

Outside, crews are able to carry out light maintenance on their yacht such as cleaning, wash downs, antifouling, polishing and repairs. “They can really take care of their yacht during the time that they’re on board with us,” said Gabriele. “They can work on the yacht as though it’s in dry dock. It’s very convenient, especially for very busy charter yachts where maintenance windows are few and far between!”

During their time off, crews are well catered for in a fully-equipped rider’s lounge that offers comfortable sofas, a TV with a PlayStation and games, and table tennis. The ship also includes a gym. “We want the riders to enjoy their time with us as much as possible,” Gabriele remarked. “They’re our guests! Our crew is there to ensure that our guests are happy and able to perform their planned maintenance. We also have some of the best cooks working for us, professionally managing the fully equipped kitchen and serving the best food. We really care about this aspect of our service and guest experience, and we’re constantly mindful that we have that crew aboard with us.”

DYT 1200x630 v2

Raising the bar

While DYT is the yacht transport industry leader, it never allows itself to become complacent. “Even when you’re at the forefront of the industry, you still need to keep your standards high; you need to keep delivering the best service and improving on it all the time,” he said. “We intend to constantly fight for our position in the market, but we expect that M/V Yacht Servant will keep us on that path of market leadership.”

Concluding, Gabriele reiterated the importance of DYT continuing to build trust and credibility in the market. “Our focus is on offering an excellent end-to-end experience while  assisting our customers with meeting their own commitments and deadlines. We’re on a mission every day to accompany the stakeholders of our industry in their cruising projects, strengthening our role as a reliable partner. After so many years in the industry, we are proud to call many of our clients friends; it feels great knowing that we’re doing something good and helpful for a customer every day. It’s never boring!”

There’s more to come

Be sure to join us for the next two articles in this series in which we find out where DYT’s client’s yachts are going and why, and we speak to captains and crew to find out what it’s like to ride a yacht in transit.

The Unique Heritage of DYT Superyacht Transport

Posted May 20, 2022 in Brokerage & New Build by Janine St.Denis

DYT Superyacht Transport traces its beginnings as far back as 1987 when the idea arose to convert heavy lift vessels previously used in a declining offshore bulk cargo market to support an interesting new concept of transporting yachts.

With a few very simple modifications, including the addition of sidewalls made from railway sleepers, the first semi-submersible carrier, Super Servant 6, was put into use transporting yachts from the United States across the Atlantic ocean to the Mediterranean .

Formerly Dockwise Yacht Transport, today DYT Superyacht Transport has since taken the idea of trans-oceanic yacht transport services and cultivated the concept of superyacht transport by adding cutting-edge carriers to its fleet. Furthermore, the brand is continuously serving the needs of its customers and adding destinations of great value to those within the yachting community.

In 2021, the company’s second purpose-built semi-submersible carrier, motor vessel Yacht Servant, was delivered and subsequently put into service.  Along with her sister ship, motor yacht Yacht Expres, DYT has added more capacity to its fleet. DYT is truly dedicated to its customer base. The sole purpose of the brand is to continue its dedicated service, specifically ensuring superyacht transport timing is right for sought-after events for those within the superyacht community.

DYT Superyacht Transport’s on-time service has its clients arriving in destinations in the western Mediterranean to enjoy a full summer season with return sailings to the Caribbean and United States East Coast for the winter. For those superyacht owners with broader and possibly more adventurous ideas on their minds, DYT offers an annual transport to the beautiful  South Pacific , which includes locations such as Tahiti , Australia , and New Zealand .

The ideals and commitment to innovation of DYT Superyacht Transport remain much the same as they were in 1987.  Having transported thousands of yachts over the company’s 30-plus year existence, they rely on our heritage to guide us forward.

Successful delivery of the Yacht Servant

January 7, 2022

DYT SUPERYACHT TRANSPORT CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL DELIVERY OF WORLD’S LARGEST PURPOSE BUILT SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE VESSEL – YACHT SERVANT

DYT Superyacht Transport is delighted to announce the delivery of its purpose-built semi-submersible vessel, YACHT SERVANT. The official delivery took place on 4 January at Yantai CIMC Raffles Shipyard on China’s Shandong Peninsula. Three days later, the vessel embarked on her maiden voyage from Shanghai to Panama.

With an LOA of 213.70m, a 46m beam and a 4.6m draft, YACHT SERVANT provides virtually double the capacity than her predecessors. The IMO Tier-III compliant vessel is also 32% more fuel efficient, while her 6,380msq deck space – 30% larger than her sistership Yacht Express – facilitates the transport of more vessels per crossing, including deep draft sailing yachts.

“We’re all hugely excited about the addition of YACHT SERVANT to our semi-submersible fleet,” says Richard Klabbers, Managing Director of DYT Superyacht Transport. “Her sheer size and volume allow for so much more capacity, and we’re looking forward to discovering how the vessel’s additional capabilities – such as onboard cranes, reduced board draft and increased submerged draft – will further what we can deliver.”

Whereas the current vessels in DYT’s semi-submersible fleet require operating water depths of around 14m, YACHT SERVANT only requires an operating water depth of 9m using a unique float-on, float-off system that is widely considered to be the safest and most efficient in the world. YACHT SERVANT’s new specialised deck located behind the bridge built to accommodate tenders, containers and small race boats also opens a new world of convenience and flexibility for owners.

On completion of her 2022 maiden voyage, YACHT SERVANT will return to China to transport cargo to Colombia during the yachting off season, before arriving in the Caribbean in May to commence her sailing schedule between Florida, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

“Last year was a challenge for the entire yacht transportation industry, with lockdowns and global uncertainties affecting travel the world over,” says Klabbers. “But our order books for 2022 are already encouragingly healthy, and with YACHT SERVANT now bringing our DYT fleet total to three vessels, we’ve made a hugely promising start to the new year.”

How to Prepare Your Yacht for Transport

Different methods for transporting a superyacht, flat-rack shipping, container shipping, sea transport, how to choose the right transport company, what to do during transport, unloading and setting up your yacht on arrival, the risks and challenges of transporting a super yacht, what to do if there is damage during transport, bottom line.

How to Transport a Super Yacht

Super yachts are some of the most luxurious and impressive boats on the water. They can be a joy to own and operate, but they can also be quite challenging to transport.

If you need to move your super yacht from one location to another, it's essential to take the necessary precautions and follow the proper steps.

This article will discuss how to transport a super yacht safely and efficiently. Let's get started!

If you're a yacht owner, you know how important it is to keep your yacht in pristine condition. But when it comes time to transport your yacht, there are some special considerations you need to consider. Here are seven tips for preparing your yacht for transport:

  • Make sure the hull is clean and free of any growth or debris. This will help the yacht move through the water more efficiently and reduce drag.
  • Check all of the hoses and fittings on the yacht, and replace any damaged or leaking.
  • Inspect the propellers and make sure they're in good condition. If they're not, they may need to be replaced before transport.
  • Ensure all of the yacht's batteries are in good working order. This includes the engine, house, and any portable batteries you may have onboard.
  • Empty all the tanks on the yacht, including the fresh water tank, grey water tank, and black water tank.
  • Remove any perishables from the yacht, including food, beverages, and any medications that need to be refrigerated.
  • Disconnect all the electronics on the yacht and wrap them in bubble wrap or another protective material. This includes GPS, VHF radio, television, and stereo system.

If you're looking to transport a superyacht , there are a few things you'll need to consider. First, of course, the sheer size of the vessel is one obstacle, and then there's the ocean voyage itself.

Yacht owners have a few different yacht shipping options when transporting their yacht. Each approach has its pros and cons that should be considered before making a decision.

This yacht shipping method involves loading the yacht onto a flatbed trailer and securing it for transport.

  • It is relatively quick and easy to set up.
  • It is an excellent option for yacht owners who must transport their yacht long distances.
  • It can be more expensive than other yacht shipping methods.
  • It may not be the best option for yacht owners who must transport their yacht over rough terrain.

This approach to yacht shipping involves loading the yacht into a shipping container and securing it for transport.

  • It is an excellent option for long distances.
  • It protects the yacht from the elements.
  • It may not be the best option for yacht owners who need to transport their yacht quickly.
  • It is less expensive than other shipping methods.
  • It allows the owner to avoid dealing with rough terrain or bad weather.
  • It can take a long time to transport a yacht by sea.
  • There is a risk of damage to the yacht while it is transported by sea.

yacht-transport.jpg

Here are seven tips on how to choose the right transport company:

  • Ensure they have experience: This is important for any company you're considering working with, but it's especially crucial when entrusting them with something as valuable as a massive yacht.
  • Check their references: Once you've narrowed down your choices, check each company's references. This step will help give you a better sense of their work quality and customer service.
  • Consider their approach to yacht transport: Each company has a unique approach to shipping a massive boat. It's essential to understand how they operate so you can be sure your vessel will be in good hands.
  • Get a quote: This is obviously a key factor in deciding which company to use. Be sure to get quotes from each of your top choices so you can compare prices and services.
  • Review their insurance: You want to be sure your yacht is properly insured during transport.
  • Check their safety record: You must guarantee that your yacht is safe during transport.
  • Make sure they're licensed and accredited: You'll want to work with a reputable, professional company.

A third party generally handles the entire operation of yacht transport. This third party will coordinate the transport ship, as well as the loading and unloading of the yacht.

As the owner of the yacht, there are a few things you can do to ensure a smooth transport:

  • Have direct contact with the transport company to stay updated on the transport schedule and any changes that may come up.
  • Be present during loading and unloading the yacht to ensure everything is done correctly and according to your specifications.
  • Have a detailed inventory of everything on board the yacht to help in case anything goes missing during transport.
  • Secure all hatches, portlights, and doors to prevent any water damage during transport.
  • Have a detailed list of contact information for everyone involved in the transport, including the transport company and the captain and crew on board.
  • Have a copy of all transport documents, including the contract, as well as the insurance policy.
  • Be prepared to answer any questions the transport company or captain may have.

After your luxurious superyacht finally arrives at its destination, you'll need to know how to unpack and set it up properly.

Here are seven tips to get it done right:

  • Find a reputable discharge operations company with experience handling 40-ton cranes because you want to ensure your yacht is in good hands.
  • Once you've found a discharge company, get all the necessary permits and licenses from the local port authority for a smooth and hassle-free process.
  • Before the discharge operation begins, it's essential to thoroughly check the yacht to ensure everything is in good condition. This includes checking the hull, mast, and rigging.
  • Once the discharge operation is complete, it's time to start sailing! But before you do, check the weather conditions and forecast to ensure safe sailing.
  • If you're planning on staying in one place for a while, finding a good mooring spot is essential to ensure your yacht is secure and safe from any potential hazards.
  • Finally, it's time to enjoy your destination once you've found a good mooring spot! Explore the local area, go for a swim, and relax on your yacht.

yacht-watercraft-shipping.jpg

After you have set up your yacht, there are a few things you should do to keep it in good condition.

  • Make sure to have the yacht regularly serviced by a professional to ensure that all the systems on board are running smoothly and that any potential issues are caught early on.
  • Clean the yacht regularly. This includes both the exterior and interior of the yacht. Not only will this keep it looking its best, but it will also help to prevent any long-term damage from dirt and grime build-up.
  • Store your yacht's gear and supplies properly, like life jackets, flares, and lines, when not in use. Proper storage will help to prolong the life of these items and make them easier to find when you need them.
  • Keep an eye on the yacht's hull and bottom, especially if you plan on keeping the yacht in salt water. Regular cleaning and inspection will help to prevent any long-term damage from corrosion.
  • Winterize the yacht properly by draining the water lines and putting antifreeze in the engine if you live in an area with cold winters. Winterizing will help to prevent any damage that freezing temperatures could cause.
  • Keep an eye on the yacht's batteries if you have a battery-operated system on board. Batteries should be regularly tested and replaced as needed to ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Invest in yacht insurance to help protect your investment in case of any accidents or damage that may occur.

Regarding superyacht transport, certain risks and challenges need to be considered. Here are five of the most common:

  • The size of the yacht: Superyachts can range in size from 30m to over 100m. This means that they can be difficult to maneuver, and even more so when trying to transport them onto land.
  • The yacht's weight: Superyachts can weigh anything from 30 to 1000 tons. This makes it very difficult to move and can pose a challenge in loading and unloading.
  • The value of the yacht: With prices starting at around $20 million, super yachts are precious assets. This means that any damage during transport can be costly to repair.
  • The delicate nature of the yacht: Superyachts are often made from delicate materials, such as glass and stainless steel. This can make them susceptible to damage during transport.
  • The time pressures involved: Superyachts often need to be transported to meet tight deadlines, such as yacht shows or races. This can add a level of stress to the process.

If you're a yacht owner, you know that transporting your yacht can be stressful. So many things can go wrong; if something goes wrong, it can be very costly to fix.

If you find yourself in a situation where there is damage to your yacht during transport, there are a few things you should do:

First, assess the damage. If it's something that can be easily fixed, such as a scratched hull or a loose piece of equipment, you may not need to do anything further. However, if the damage is more significant, you will need to take some action.

Next, contact the transport company. If the damage was caused by something they did, such as an improperly secured yacht, they might be liable for the repairs. In this case, you will need to contact their insurance company to file a claim.

If the transport company did not cause the damage, you would need to contact your insurance company. They will likely cover the cost of repairs, but you will have to pay a deductible.

Once you have contacted the appropriate insurance company, you will need to get estimates for the repairs. Be sure to get several estimates so that you can compare prices.

Finally, once the repairs are completed, be sure to document them. This will be important if you ever need to file a claim again.

Transporting a super yacht can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be. By following the tips in this article, you can help ensure your yacht arrives safely at its destination. And if something does go wrong, you know what to do.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

super yacht transport

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

super yacht transport

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

Moscow transport: metro, bus & taxi in Moscow | How does it work?

  • August 15, 2023

Moscow transport: metro, bus & taxi in Moscow

Moscow transport: how does it work? Here we summarized all you need to know about Moscow city public transport (bus, metro, card Troika), but also taxi in Moscow.

Distances in Moscow: walking in Moscow

Walking. The geolocation of your accommodation in Moscow is important, because the distances are great. You’re definitely not going to be able to do it all on foot. Moscow is the largest city in Europe with more than 12 million intramural inhabitants. Besides, Moscow is made for giants, because everything is big: the avenues, the buildings, the metro stations! So, the place of your accommodation is very important. You can check our blog post: Where to stay in Moscow?

Good to know! We have written 2 other blog posts that could be helpful: Maps of Moscow and Moscow Airport Transfer.

Public transport in Moscow: prices and how does it work?

Even if you are going to be able to visit many interesting places around Red Square (see the article: Moscow Red Square ), you will certainly take the metro to get around, but also to see the most beautiful stations . Furthermore, among public transport the metro remains the fastest solution in Moscow.

Good to know! Public transport is free for children under the age of 7. More specifically, 1 adult may not purchase a ticket for 1 child under the age of 7. If you are 2 adults, it is therefore for 2 children that the trips will be free.

Tips for Moscow city transport

Here are my tips to make travel more pleasant and optimized:

  • Avoid to take Moscow City transport during rush hours. Especially for ground transportation (lots of traffic jams). You will lose a lot of time, especially for city center trips by land transport. Peak hours correspond to office hours: the standard working day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 6 p.m.
  • Use a mobile application to estimate your journey time as accurately as possible. In Europe, as in Russia, we use CityMapper . It is a free application that allows you to calculate your trips and see all the possibilities to get from one place to another. For the application to work, you must have an Internet connection: either through your French package which can prove to be expensive; either by wifi, in your hotel, in a cafe (very common in Moscow) or by using the free Wi-Fi of the city of Moscow! To download CityMapper on your mobile, just type its name in AppStore or GooglePlay . Then choose the city where you want to use it.
  • Buy a transportation card. If you plan to take public transport several times a day or if you come to Moscow for a university or work exchange, it is more economical to take a transport card. I talk about it later in the article.
  • Further info about airport transfer here: How to get from airport to Moscow?

Moscow metro: the fastest way to get around Moscow

Beautiful! The Moscow Metro is considered the most beautiful in the world! You can find out which stations are worth a visit in my article: The most beautiful stations in Moscow .

Metro timetables. Times vary by station, but approximately the Moscow Metro is open from 5.30 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Below you can find a map of the Moscow metro, with an example of a metro station. You can find other Moscow maps here .

super yacht transport

Metro prices in Moscow

  • A single trip = 57 rubles (from February 1, 2020)
  • Price for transporting a suitcase in the metro = 60 rubles
  • With a transport card , the price of the journey decreases. Example: with the Troika card the price per trip increases to 40 rubles. More details about troika card below.
  • You can also pay with ApplePay or GooglePay.

Where to buy metro tickets?

  • At the cash desks , where you can buy everything: transport card or one-way tickets. Small flat: most of the time, the employees of the metro do not speak English very well. But they are used to it, you will be able to understand each other.
  • At the English terminals , where you can also buy everything. See below for more details on terminal purchases.

Moscow City transport taxi

Bus, trolleybus, tram in Moscow

Avoid at peak hours. The city center can be literally blocked! Mobile applications are very useful to estimate travel times.

Tram. Trams are very nice to do. It’s a bit special. Tram stops are hard on the road. The cars then stop and let the pedestrians get on or off the tram.

Price of a bus, trolleybus or tram ticket

  • One way = 57 rubles (from February 1, 2020)
  • With a transport card , the price drops. Example: with the Troika card the price per trip increases to 40 rubles. More details about transport cards below.

Where to buy bus, trolleybus or tram tickets?

To drivers. There are no controllers on each bus, as in St. Petersburg.

By purchasing a transport card in advance at a metro station. There are few terminals installed near bus, tram or trolley stations.

Good to know! It is possible to pay on the metro, but also on buses with your smartphone or a contactless card (Apple Pay or Google Pay)! The price is 44 rubles per way. Beware, however, of bank charges, as for other ruble payments in Russia. See article: How to pay in Russia?

Transport cards in Moscow

Two most interesting solutions for taking Moscow City transport:

troika card

Troika card prices

  • 1 metro, bus, trolley bus or tram journey: 40 rubles (instead of 57)
  • 90 minutes in public transport (regardless of the number of changes): 62 rubles

How to buy a Troika card?

  • Cost of purchase : 50 rubles. You can get it at all metro stations.
  • Refill . Once the card is purchased, you must reload it. You can choose the amount freely.
  • Where? It is possible to buy the card and recharge it at the metro cash desks or via automatic terminals, in cash or by bank card.

The Troika card is interesting if you:

  • want to take advantage of lower transportation rates.
  • stay in Moscow for a long time (language stays, expatriation, VIE, university exchange), but do not go for frequent daily trips.
  • don’t stay long, but you know roughly how many trips you’re going to make or you don’t mind reloading the card often. Why? It is possible, but long and complicated to recover the initial amount of 50 rubles, as well as the rest on the card.

How much does the unlimited Yediny card (central Moscow area) cost?

  • 1 day = 24 hours = 230 rubles
  • 3 days = 438 rubles
  • 30 days = 2170 rubles
  • There are no unlimited cards for 2, 4, 5, 6 or 7 days.

More details: Moscow transport website

How to buy a Yediny card?

It is possible to buy the card and recharge it at the metro cash desks or via automatic terminals, in cash or by bank card. The card is activated (the countdown starts) at the time of validation and not at the time of purchase. The card must be activated within 10 days of purchase (day of purchase included).

Here are the pictures of the automatic terminal (in English), when buying a Yédiny card.

super yacht transport

The Yediny card is interesting if you:

  • stay in Moscow for a long time (language stays, expatriation, university exchange), but make frequent daily trips.
  • do not stay in Moscow for a long time, but do not want to estimate your trips in advance (Troika card) while enjoying the unlimited.

Our experience with transport cards in Moscow

When I was working in Moscow, I used the Troika card. It was the most economical solution for me. We also used it later when we both went there. On the other hand, the last time we were there, we took the Yediny card and finally we found it more practical, even if it turned out to be less economical in the end.

Our verdict (compared to our travel habits): budget side, the Troika card is better. But for less headache (how much to put on the card? How much is left?…), The unlimited Yediny card is more practical.

Boat trips in Moscow

There are several boat trips on the Moskva River. In addition, it is even possible to buy an unlimited day ticket. For more information, you can then consult the article: Take a boat trip on the Moskva River.

Getting around in Moscow by taxi

There are several types of taxis in Moscow:

  • First, official taxis (sign on the roof);
  • Then individuals who do this out of the blue;
  • And finally Moscow taxis via mobile applications (private drivers or taxi agencies).

Good to know. The cost of a taxi ride to the city center in Moscow is around 500 rubles. If you want to avoid negotiations, use the taxi apps in Moscow.

Uber Moscow: NO.

It works before, but not anymore, because Uber does not use the classic app in Russia (they have created a special app for Russia, only this app works now). So, you have to download the special Uber Russia app… but this application is only available on the Russian AppStore, so it cannot be downloaded for us. Uber’s competitors in Russia such as YandexTaxi or Gett can be used.

Use the YandexTaxi app to take a taxi in Moscow

The Yandex company is the Russian Google. Initially a search engine, it also offers several services. YandexTaxi is then the taxi service in Moscow, it works everywhere in Russia. You can download the app from the AppStore or GooglePlay . Thanks to this application, it is possible to pay the taxi in cash (by default) or by bank card directly (to be specified in the application). If you are thinking of paying in cash, then have rather small denominations so that the driver can give you change. The application is now in French.

How does YandexTaxi work?

  • First, it detects your geolocation.
  • Then you indicate your arrival position using the Latin or Cyrillic alphabet.
  • It then offers you the estimated prices for each range (thrifty, business, etc.).
  • You choose, confirm and wait for the driver to arrive.
  • You identify the driver with the indicated license plate, then at the end YandexTaxi collects the race via your bank card (do not forget to put your card info before using the app, otherwise pay in cash).

Other solution. You can also book a taxi in advance on KiwiTaxi website . It’s easy!

Yandex Taxi Moscow

Public transport and taxi in Moscow: summary

Getting around Moscow is quite simple, as Moscow City transport is well developed. However, because of traffic jams, the metro is the quickest solution. It isn’t an issue, because the Moscow metro is very clean and beautiful. Taxis are rather cheap and easy to find thanks to mobile applications like, for example, YandexTaxi.
