Penobscot Theatre Company

Founder of Acadia and Penobscot Theatres dies at 88

PTC is sad to announce the passing of our founder, George Vafiadis.  George was a creative force that gave Bangor and Maine a great legacy of two theaters.

George Vafiadis – actor, stage director, voice-actor, theatre producer and founder of three Maine theatre companies passed away at the age of 88 on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 in Bradenton, Florida from complications caused by his struggles with Parkinson’s disease.

George was born on January 23, 1934 in Hackensack, New Jersey to George Nicholas Vafiadis and Xanthe Mamukari Vafiadis.  He and his late brother, Nicholas lived there until their father’s death in 1944. The family then moved to San Antonio, Texas where George would eventually study theatre at the University of Texas at Austin, and work with theatre legends B. Iden Payne and Francis Hodge, who shaped so much of George’s views on theatre production and ensemble acting.  Later he would continue his training by studying with Dimitris Rondiris at the Greek National Theatre in Epidaurus which inspired him, throughout his life, to share the power, clarity and beauty of the classic Greek tragedies from his ancestral home.

As a professional actor, George worked for dozens of regional theatres across the country including the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Theatre Impact, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Cleveland Playhouse and the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival.

His film and television work began with a broadcast of  The Rivalry  produced by David Susskind for his series,  Esso Repertory Theatre , and originally staged by the Cleveland playhouse.  This was a dramatization of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, and began George’s life-long love of Abraham Lincoln, who was to reappear in George’s professional work for the rest of his life.  George also performed as a regular on the HBO series  The Wire  and was seen in the film  27 Dresses .

But his love was with the theatre and especially the classics, from Sophocles to Shakespeare.  He would go on to perform in over 100 plays as well as produce and direct another 80 in regional theatres and colleges across the country.

In 1973, George set his sights on Maine and, with local artist and theatrical producer, Louis Collier, formed a summer stock company called the Acadia Repertory Theatre in the rustic Masonic Hall of Somesville on Mt. Desert Island.  This theatre has become one of the longest continually producing   theaters (with the exception of a 2020 COVID hiatus) in the state.  In 1983, George founded the Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor, as an offshoot of the Acadia Rep.  The Penobscot Theatre is now enjoying new life in the Bangor Opera House.  And in 1990, he started the L/A Public Theatre in the twin cities of Lewiston-Auburn.  All three theatres continue to this day and owe their existence to George and his commitment to the concept of regional theatre production.

One of his favorite accomplishments at the Penobscot Theatre was the creation of a foreign director program, presenting plays mounted by European directors; Patrick Laffin (Abbey Theatre, Dublin), Vasek Simek (Prague, Czechoslovakia) and Dame Joan Knight (Perth, Scotland).  George exchanged directorial duties with Joan Knight and traveled to Scotland to direct  The Gin Game  in 1988.

When the average artist would perhaps start to relax and reflect, George chose to enter into another career as a voice actor, recording audio books, including the complete and unabridged King James Version of both the Old and New Testaments, and  Lincoln’s Letters , both of which won the national audiobook of the year award. His love of Lincoln led to his writing and performing  Mr. Lincoln’s Public Opinion Bath , a full-length, one-person show which premiered back up in Maine at the Acadia Rep and was later performed for schools and theaters across New England.

Finally the white sand beaches of Sarasota Florida called and George and his wife, Katherine Knowles retired to this community in 2013 where both of them continued to contribute to the world of the performing arts, she as a grant writer and he as a guest lecturer and author, having completed his autobiography,  A FLAME – The Fire of a Stage Actor.

George is survived by his loving wife, Katherine, sister in law, Elaine Vafiadis and by countless artists and audiences who have benefitted from George’s passionate commitment to the world of live theatre.

A memorial service will be held later this spring at the Acadia Repertory Theatre in Somesville, Maine.  In lieu of flowers it is requested that donations be made to the  George Vafiadis Society  planned giving fund hosted by the Penobscot Theatre Company at  https://penobscottheatre.staging.tempurl.host/be-a-flame/  or by contributing to the Acadia Repertory Theatre at P.O. Box 106 Mt. Desert ME 04660.

“George Vafiadis was Zeus incarnated. A larger than life force who, through Herculean perseverance, tenacity, vision and an unyielding belief in the power of story to unite and uplift a community, created three theatre companies – all of which continue to exist today.” -Bari Newport

George Vafiadis, one of the co-founders of the Penobscot Theatre Co. in Bangor and founder of two other Maine theater companies, died last week due to complications from Parkinson’s disease at his home in Florida. He was 88.

His longtime friend and colleague, actor, director and Husson University professor Kenneth Stack, confirmed Vafiadis’ death, noting his impact on theater in Maine, and his love of the craft of acting.

Vafiadis died on Wednesday.

“All of us benefit today from his boundless energy and dedication,” Stack said. “And his respect for the craft of the actor never waivered.”

Vafiadis founded Acadia Repertory Theatre on Mount Desert Island in 1973, a summer stock company that produces plays in and musicals in the old Masonic Hall in Somesville. Other than a break in 2020 during the pandemic, Acadia Rep has offered live theater in the summer on the island for nearly 50 years, featuring both local and national actors.

Acadia Rep began producing shows in Bangor in the 1970s and ‘80s, and in 1983, Vafiadis and his colleague, Lou Collier, formed a permanent company, the Penobscot Theatre Co. Vafiadis served as the company’s producing director until 1990, alongside artistic director Stack, moving the theater into a permanent home at 183 Main St. in 1986, where it stayed until moving into the Bangor Opera House in 1997.

“George Vafiadis was Zeus incarnated,” said Bari Newport,  who served as Penobscot Theatre’s artistic director between 2012 and 2021. “A larger than life force who, through Herculean perseverance, tenacity, vision and an unyielding belief in the power of story to unite and uplift a community, created three theater companies, all of which still exist today.”

Vafiadis also founded the Public Theatre in Lewiston in 1991, which last year celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Vafiadis was born in 1934 in New Jersey and was raised there and in Texas, where he studied theater at the University of Texas in Austin. As a young man, he worked in theater companies all across the country, before moving to Maine in the early 1970s. He remained in Maine until 2013, when he and his wife, Katherine, moved to Sarasota, Florida.

Later in life, Vafiadis worked as a voice actor in audiobooks, recording versions of the King James Bible and of Abraham Lincoln’s letters. Vafiadis also appeared in a number of film and television roles, including a recurring role on HBO’s “The Wire” and in the film “27 Dresses.”

Vafiadis is survived by his wife, Katherine, and sister-in-law, Elaine. A memorial service will be held this spring at Acadia Repertory Theatre.

Hellenic Community of Monaco welcomes in new leadership during Vasilopita celebration

george vafiadis yachts

Earlier this month, more than 200 members and friends of the Hellenic Community of Monaco gathered at the Yacht Club de Monaco to welcome in the association’s new Board of Directors and to celebrate Vasilopita.

Monaco’s Greek community united at the central venue on Sunday 14 th January to witness a number of important transitions within the club’s structure.

Firstly, Sophia Vaharis-Tsouvelekakis formally concluded her second term as President, receiving a warm round of applause for her efforts, and handed the baton on to Ekaterini Lanara, a fellow businesswoman who has lived in the Principality of Monaco for more than 15 years.

Vaharis-Tsouvelekakis’ final official task in her capacity as President was to honour certain members of the community for their efforts over the last year. These included: Michael Seliniotakis for his humanitarian efforts; John Christodoulou for his philanthropic endeavours; George Vafiadis for his contributions to yacht design; and the island of Kastellorizo and its residents for their cultural and societal contributions.

The Hellenic Community of Monaco’s new Board of Directors was also presented at the event. Grigorios Stassinopoulos, Gerasimos Marinis and Dimitrios Anastasakos will serve as Vice-Presidents while Anastasakos will hold a secondary role as Treasurer alongside Dr. Panagiotis Kyriazis. Vasileios Kasimatis is taking on the position of Secretary, Athanasios Kourniotis will manage the Public Relations responsibilities of the community and Leonidas Kampanis will serve as Event Manager.

106m Dream Completes Decade-Long Refit

By Catriona Cherrie

Originally launched by Turkish shipyard Halic Tersaneleri in 1997, superyacht Dream started out as a passenger vessel and will now be the 37th largest superyacht in the world . With an extensive refit undertaken at Greek yard Chalkis Shipyards S.A. and a substantial interior overhaul by Ciarmoli Queda Studio (CQS), Dream has been transformed into a six-deck vessel of impeccable quality.

The yacht’s owner Mr George Procopiou, a Greek billionaire, has spent his working life in the maritime industry. He decided the time was right to accomplish the dream he has had since the age of seven. Unsurprisingly, Procopiou’s journey to this point inspired the christened name of the yacht, which began its story 10 years ago.

The Giorgio Vafiadis-designed conversion began in 2008 and was due to be completed by 2011. However, in 2013 the CQS architecture firm from Milan announced its appointment for the interior refit and has now completed the project and delivered it to the owner in 2018.

The refit saw extensive changes to the exterior, including an extension to the bow, adding 13 metres to her original length of 93 metres. The result is a more streamlined shape and modern aesthetic.

Dream’s interior offers 23 guest cabins, three formal dining rooms, a business centre, a wellness centre and two bars. CQS adopted a nautical theme for the design, which combines white marble, light-coloured woods, Grecian murals and white leathers to create an elegant and classical environment. This also includes the use of materials such as handmade carpets by Ferreira de Sa, veneers by Tabu and red carpazi marble floors. There is space for up to 28 crew on board to ensure that every guest is well catered for and can enjoy the amenities of the yacht with first-class treatment.

Motoryacht Dream is the largest superyacht to fly the Maltese flag, as Procopiou felt the Maltese flag was well respected among the maritime community. This has marked an important phase for Malta according to Mr John Gauci Maistre, who is the maritime consultant for the owner. “When you have a yacht of a certain calibre and owned by a certain owner, automatically the standard of the flag is raised among influential people, and the more of this type of owner we have, the more others are attracted to come to register their yachts in Malta.”

It is not yet known whether or not motor yacht Dream will be available for charter.

O’ptasia, golden yachts’ new flagship, is wowing charterers with her quiet comfort and beautiful beach club.

george vafiadis yachts

Silence is Golden

“She was booked for charter before even leaving the shed, just based off the renderings,” says Paris Dragnis of the new85-metre Golden Yachts flagship O’Ptasia.

Standing on the quay at the yacht’s home marina in Athens, the chairman and founder of Golden Yachts gazes admiringly up at his new yacht. At 2,350GT, she is the largest boat to emerge from the Greek yard. And she sets a new standard among her Golden Yachts siblings for amenities and technical innovations to maximise guest comfort on board. Golden Yachts’ business model is distinct from most yards’. Rather than building a yacht with a client in mind, or even on speculation hoping to lure the right owner, newyachts go directly into the charter market, managed by Golden Yachts’ sister company, the brokerage house Atalanta Golden Yachts. These spend at least a few years chartering before being put up for sale, with Dragnis also taking this time to use the boat himself – as a means to both enjoy his creation and gain insights on improvements for the following iterations. In this sense, Dragnis very much wears the hat of owner during the build process, dreaming up the brief andworking hand-in-hand with Italian designer Giorgio Vafiadis of Studio Vafiadis. Their first Golden Yachts project was 42-metre O’Pari, launched in 1997 by Intermarine but refitted by the nascent Greek yard in 2006. StudioVafiadis masterminded the interior design of the refit. “Yachting wasmyhobby and then it becamemybusiness,” says Dragnis. “And I still love it.” Before venturing into yacht building, his business was cargo ships and tankers. And in a former life, in his early 20s, Dragnis worked on boats himself. His business card still brandishes the title “Captain” and the crewrefer to him as such when he’s on board. These days, though, he is quite content to leave the helm to O’Ptasia’s actual skipper, Nikos Demertzis, whosays that the full-displacement yacht handles exceptionallywell in rough seas. Fromseafarer to shipping magnate to yachtowner, this varied maritime history has helped inform the construction process of Golden Yachts. The shipping background in particular has surely helped the engineering advancements found on O’Ptasia. Guest comfort was paramount to the brief, and as such additional sound dampening was required. “My wish is to build a boat that when it’s running you hear nothing at all,” Dragnis says.

The contrasting tastes of Golden Yachts’ Paris Dragnis and designer Giorgio Vafiadis are balanced. The interior has a blend of dark woods paired with a light colour palette that is intended to evoke a sense of calm

The precise goal was to improve noise insulation by 35 per cent compared with O’Ptasia’s”. predecessor, O’Pari 3. “I like the quietness of the upper saloon,” says Vafiadis, to this point. Vafiadis, along with his son Stefano, styled O’Ptasia’s interior and exterior as well as configuring the layout. He has penned 11 out of Golden Yachts’ 13-strong fleet, creating a familial inheritance of flowing looks, soft lines and a style that endures. Balance, fluidity and light are all Vafiadis keywords. “Looking at the profile, you can recognise a certain fluidity, like watermoving in slowmotion and then shaping well-balanced volumes,” he says. “It’s a continuation of a style in the Golden Yachts family. When you make a successful design for a brand, it’s normal to maintain such design concepts. We designed all of the Golden Yachts new builds having that same idea in mind.” In order to create an elegant exterior on a larger scale with O’Ptasia, Vafiadis played with the contrast between volumes and recesses, “by pulling the volumes out in opposition to the recesses absorbed by the dark”. The tastes of Dragnis and Vafiadis are balanced inside. “I like light colours and Giorgio likes dark woods, so it’s always a matter of finding a compromise,” Dragnis says. Fittingly, the interior has a blend of dark woods paired with a light colour palette that is intended to evoke a sense of calm. There is a range of woods, from a porous lati to glossy ebony. “The inspiration for the interior was quiet, calm and relaxing,” says  Vafiadis. “We kept the surfaces clean, and there isn’t a lot of clutter or accessories.” The interior decor is modern, with clean, crisp lines and eye-catching details. Ebony cabinetry is inlaid with stainless-steel details. A rippled line in the cabinets breaks up the expanse of joinery in the saloon, drawing the eyes up and out to views beyond the picture-box windows. The main saloon is a grand space, one large open-plan room with two separate seating areas containing white leather sofas, black coffee tables and glass lamps. A dining area is set at the forward end of the saloon, and the ebony dining table is centred with backlit, honey-toned onyx. Air-conditioning units, supplied by Dometic, are hidden in columns, and they are whisper quiet, with air dispersed through the shelved ceilings. This not only hides the potential eyesore of vents but also creates dramatic height, especially in the main saloon – and the next yacht in build is slated to have ceilings that are 20 centimetres higher still. The upper deck saloon is a more casual place for lounging or watching films, with low-slung grey sofas, a bar and games table. The guest cabins feature eucalyptus walls and grey joinery.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
