History and Evolution of the Rolex Yacht-Master

History and evolution of the rolex yacht-master more luxurious than the submariner, sportier than the datejust, and simpler than the gmt-master, the rolex yacht-master is the brand’s nautical-inspired luxury sports watch. the yacht-master is also one of the younger rolex watch collections having first made its debut in the 1990s. join us as we dive into the history and evolution of the rolex yacht-master, yellow gold yacht-master 16628.

While Rolex had been a longtime supporter of sailing and experimented with a Yacht-Master dial prototype in the 1960s, it was not until the 1990s that the Crown unveiled a watch officially dedicated to nautical lifestyle. The first model to kick off the YM collection was the Yacht-Master ref. 16628. Crafted almost entirely in 18k yellow gold, it was clear from the onset that Rolex was positioning the Yacht-Master as a sports watch with plenty of style and flair. In fact, at a quick glance, the Yacht-Master and the Submariner share quite a few design traits.

Yacht-Master 16628 with mother-of-pearl dial

The Yacht-Master ref. 16628 features a 40mm Oyster case topped with a bi-directional rotating timing bezel marked to 60 minutes. The Yacht-Master dial is similar to other Rolex Oyster Professional watches with the familiar Mercedes-style center hands, in addition to the mix of round, rectangular and triangular hour markers. To emphasize the opulent nature of the watch, Rolex also offered dial versions with ruby-set hour markers, sapphire-set hour markers, and black onyx-set hour markers. The Yacht-Master includes a date window at 3 o’clock along with the customary Cyclops magnification lens above it, affixed to the exterior of the sapphire crystal.

Yacht-Master 16628B with Ruby-Set Dial

Rolex opted to fit the Yacht-Master with an Oyster bracelet and like all its automatic date/time models of the era, the watch ran on Caliber 3135. Rolex continued to produce the Yacht-Master 16628 until around 2011 and never replaced it with another full yellow gold Yacht-Master after that.

The ladies’ yellow gold Yacht-Master ref. 69628 with a 29mm case and the midsize yellow gold Yacht-Master ref. 68628 with a 35mm case joined the collection in 1994.

The Rolesium Yacht-Master 16622

In 1999, Rolex introduced a brand new version of the Yacht-Master in a metal combination the brand calls Rolesium. While Rolesor is Rolex’s term for combining gold and steel on a watch, Rolesium is the brand’s name for using platinum and steel together on a watch. The Yacht-Master was the first (and remains the only) Rolex Rolesium model.

On top of the Rolesium Yacht-Master ref. 16622 ‘s 40mm steel case is a platinum bezel with high polished raised numerals on a sandblasted background. What’s more, the platinum dial also features a sandblasted finish, along with pops of red on the seconds hand and the YACHT-MASTER label.

The Oyster bracelet is fashioned from stainless steel but also combines a mix of finishes with high-polished center links flanked by brushed center links. Therefore, while the Rolesium Yacht-Master ref. 16622 is monochromatic due to its use of white metals, there is plenty of textural interest thanks to the range of surface finishes.

Rolesium Yacht-Master 116622

Rolex also made the Rolesium Yacht-Master with a ladies’ 29mm size (ref. 69622 then ref. 169622 ) and a midsize 35mm size (ref. 68622 then ref. 168622).

In 2012, Rolex replaced Yacht-Master ref. 16622 with the Yacht-Master ref. 116622 , which features an upgraded clasp with the Eaasylink extension system and the blue Chromalight lume instead of the green lume.

Yellow Rolesor Yacht-Master 16623

The Rolesor Yacht-Master ref. 16623 in a two-tone colorway mixing yellow gold and stainless steel joined the lineup in 2005.

Yellow Rolesor Yacht-Master 16623

Interestingly, Rolex already made yellow Rolesor Yacht-Master models but in smaller sizes. The two-tone midsize 35mm Yacht-Master ref. 68623 and two-tone ladies’ 29mm Yacht-Master ref. 69623 were released in 1995 and later replaced by the upgraded 168623 and 169623 references, respectively, in the early 2000s.

yachtmaster blue dial discontinued

The Yacht-Master 16623, however, was the first two-tone version in the men’s 40mm size. The 40mm stainless steel case includes an 18k yellow gold bezel, complete with raised numerals in a high polished finish. Furthermore, the two-tone Oyster bracelet of the Yacht-Master 16623 features yellow gold center links flanked by two rows of stainless steel

Rolex eventually discontinued the yellow Rolesor Yacht-Master 16623 in 2016 to make way for another type of two-tone YM, which we will discuss shortly below.

Everose Gold Yacht-Master 116655

In 2015, Rolex released the Yacht-Master 116655, which was not only the first Yacht-Master crafted from Everose gold (Rolex’s patented rose gold alloy) but also the very first Rolex fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet. The Oysterflex bracelet is Rolex’s approach to a black rubber strap, comprised of a metal titanium nickel alloy blade covered in a black elastomer coating.

Everose Gold Yacht-Master models introduced at Baselworld 2015

Additionally, the Everose gold Yacht-Master 116655 includes a black Cerachrom (Rolex’s proprietary ceramic alloy) bezel–another first for the collection. Matching the black bracelet and black bezel of the Yacht-Master ref. 116655 is the black dial, punctuated with rose gold surrounds framing the lume plots and rose gold Mercedes-style hands.

That same year, Rolex also introduced the Everose gold and black Oysterflex Yacht-Master ref. 268655 with a smaller 37mm case size. This new case size effectively replaced the previous ladies and midsize versions of the Yacht-Master as Rolex has now stopped making the 35mm and 29mm editions.

Everose Rolesor Yacht-Master 116621

As previously mentioned, Rolex discontinued the yellow gold and stainless steel Yacht-Master model. However, taking the place of that two-tone version is the new Rolesor Yacht-Master ref. 116621 , which combines rose gold and steel, presented in 2016.

The 40mm stainless steel case of the Yacht-Master ref. 116621 includes a rotating bezel in 18k Everose gold. And like previous versions, the raised numerals on the bezel are high-polished, providing a contrast to the sandblasted background.

Rolesor Yacht-Master 116621

In true Rolex two-tone fashion, the Oyster bracelet of the Rolesor Yacht-Master ref. 116621 includes rose gold center links in between the exterior steel links. The bracelet also comes with the practical Easylink adjustment system on the clasp.

Yacht-Master With Caliber 3235

Just this year at Baselworld 2019 , Rolex unveiled a new batch of Yacht-Master 40 references, all fitted with the new-generation Caliber 3235 automatic movement with an increased power reserve of 72 hours. There’s the Everose gold and Oysterflex Yacht-Master ref. 126655, the steel and platinum Rolesium Yacht-Master ref. 126622, and the Everose gold and steel Rolesor Yacht-Master ref. 126621.

With these new releases, all previous 40mm Yacht-Master ref. 1166xx references are now discontinued.

White Gold Yacht-Master 42 226659

The big news that came out of the Rolex pavilion at Baselworld 2019 was the launch of the Yacht-Master ref. 226659. With its new 42mm case size, this is the biggest Yacht-Master to date and the first to be made in white gold.

yachtmaster blue dial discontinued

Similar to its Everose gold sibling, Rolex fitted white gold Yacht-Master 226659 with a black Cerachrom bezel, a black Oysterflex bracelet, and a black dial. Under the solid white gold caseback is also the automatic Caliber 3255 movement.

While the Rolex Yacht-Master has been around for less than three decades, it’s clear that this has been an active part of the company’s catalog. The history and evolution of the Rolex Yacht-Master have paved the way for a bevy of sizes, metals, and styles to choose among current-production and pre-owned Yacht-Master models . This is the perfect watch model if you’re looking for a sporty Rolex with some serious flair.

Close-Up: Rolex Yacht-Master in Rolesium

yachtmaster blue dial discontinued

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master , a sailors’ watch introduced in 1992, underwent a major facelift in both its design and technology in 2012. In this popular article from the WatchTime archives, we take a closer look at it.

Rolesium, a material developed by Rolex and used here in the Yacht-Master’s 40-mm diameter Oyster case, is an alloy of 904L stainless steel and platinum. The bezel , which rotates in both directions and now has a notched ring with 120 gradations, is made entirely of 950 platinum. It has a smooth, sand-blasted finish, except for the raised numerals and indices, which are polished. The hour markers on the nautical-looking blue dial are made of 18k white gold and filled with a luminescent material called Chromalight, which gives off a strong, blue-tinted glow in the dark. Rolex’s traditional Oyster case — with a middle piece crafted from a solid block of the corrosion-resistant alloy and a fluted, hermetically screwed caseback — is water-resistant to 100 meters. The screw-down crown is protected by a crown guard built into the middle case and also features the patented Triplock water-proofing system. Another Rolex trademark — the “Cyclops” magnifying lens over the date, is found at 3 o’clock and made of highly scratch-resistant synthetic sapphire.

Inside the Yacht-Master beats Rolex’s manufacture Caliber 3135, an automatic movement that has been certified by the Swiss testing agency COSC as a chronometer . Like other Rolex movements, it features an oscillating system with a blue hairspring made of Parachrom, an alloy developed and patented by Rolex. According to the company, this hairspring is highly resistant to shocks, magnetic fields and temperature variations, which ensures greater stability in timekeeping precision.

A sold-link Oyster bracelet in 904L stainless steel completes the package, with polished center links and satin-finished outer links. The improved Oysterlock safety clasp, another patented Rolex development, has a security system to prevent accidental opening and also contains the Easylink quick-extension technology, which lets the wearer easily increase the bracelet length by about 5 mm. Technical specs for the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master (retail price: $11,550*) can be found below the photo.

MOVEMENT Rolex manufacture Caliber 3135, bidirectional self-winding via perpetual rotor; COSC-certified chronometer; 31 jewels; frequency = 28,800 vph (4 Hz); Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring with Breguet overcoil; large balance wheel with variable inertia; high-precision regulating via four gold Microstella nuts; traversing balance bridge

FUNCTIONS: Central hour, minute and seconds hands; instantaneous date at 3 o’clock with quick setting; stop-seconds function for precise time setting

CASE Oyster (monobloc middle case, screw-down caseback and winding crown) made of Rolesium (combination of 904L stainless steel superalloy and 950 platinum); polished finish; diameter = 40 mm; bidirectional rotating bezel made of 950 platinum, sand-blasted finish, polished raised graduations; screw-down crown with crown guard and Triplock triple water-proofing system; scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with Cyclops lens over date and double nonreflective coating; water-resistant to 100 meters; stainless-steel Oyster bracelet with polished center links and satin-finished outer links with polished edges; folding Oysterlock safety clasp with Easylink 5-mm extension

DIAL & HANDS Blue dial with sunray finish, 18k white-gold hands and appliques with Chromalight for long-lasting luminescence, red seconds hand

* Price may has changed.

I’m interested in purchasing, could you let me know how I can get a hold of one?

You can buy it on Amazon right now from several sellers but with the 3135 movement. FYI Rolex has put the 3235 movement in this model but I don’t know where you would find one since the AD’s don’t have any (any of pretty much all the stainless sport watches)

I do believe that the case is in fact solid 904L steel, and not as you mention: “Oyster (monobloc middle case, screw-down caseback and winding crown) made of Rolesium (combination of 904L stainless steel superalloy and 950 platinum)”

This is a quote from the ROLEX website:

Yacht-Master Model features: Many Rolex watches are available with the now-legendary combination of yellow, white or Everose gold and steel known as Rolesor, but Rolesium is a creation specific to the Yacht-Master. While the case and bracelet are in rugged 904L stainless steel, the bezel of the Rolesium versions is made of 950 platinum, imparting a silvery whiteness and vibrant luminosity for an unmistakable sense of luxury.

The case and bracelet are stainless steel and not a combination of steel and platinum, but I have seen this verbatim description before.

Hi all, wondering if someone could assist? On the platinum dial model, can sonmeone confirm if the so-called “rolesium” material of the case is a mix of steel and platinum, or is it 100% steel, leaving the bezel and dial as the only parts containing or made of platinum ?

What is the cost and is it available now?

Can anyone tell us how much this retails at in the uk

It is beautiful… Does anyone know the price?

simply stunning…..is the blue dial made of platinum? thanks

Yes, I believe it is made from platinum blended with “Indigoium”.

Great post. Keep us update with your developments!

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 White Gold 226629

Instagram: @rolex

In the year 1992, Swiss watchmaker Rolex would debut a new model line at the Baselworld show that was strikingly similar to the already-popular Submariner. It featured the same 40mm Oyster case with a rotating bezel, the same chronometer-certified caliber, and the same Oyster bracelet.

Seemingly the only difference between the two was the white dial of that first Yacht-Master, a style which has never been an option on a Sub, and the inferior depth rating of 100m when compared to the Sub’s 300m.

Yet, the Yacht-Master was well-received upon launch, and with the passing of time, the yachting-inspired model has evolved and pioneered its own path within Rolex’s catalog.

Read on with us as we go back to the beginning and track the catalysts that paved the way for the most recent Yacht-Master release, the Yacht-Master 42 (226659), to become one of the hottest sports timepieces of the year.

The Release Of The Yacht-Master

The first Yacht-Master watch was launched in 1992 under reference number 16628. It featured a yellow gold case, a bidirectional graduated bezel, and a matching full-gold Oyster bracelet. Its dial was white with black hour indices, while at center were gold Mercedes hands, and beating inside was the 3135 movement.

Previous to the Yacht-Master’s introduction, Rolex had not released a new model line in a quarter century. So, why did they go with the Yacht-Master, a design that risked being a detractor from their existing Submariner? Let’s take a look at the inspiration.

The sport of yachting is one which demands precise timing and extreme coordination of the entire crew for optimal performance, particularly in offshore competitions.

Vintage Rolex Daytona Yacht-Master Prototype

Prototype Daytona Yacht-Master ref. 6239. Image: Christies.com

Rolex believed their waterproof and chronometer-grade timepieces to be more than qualified to handle the knocks of a regatta and keep ticking accurately. The brand is also notorious for their marketing prowess, which led them to act quickly in establishing an association with the sport.

Beginning in 1958 with their first sponsorship of a race, the relationship has endured until today, when the brand sponsors over a dozen international yachting events.

Nevertheless, it’s hard to deny that there exists a large gap between first contact in 1958 and the release of the yacht-inspired timepiece in the early ’90s. Why wasn’t the Yacht-Master released earlier on?

Well, Rolex played around with the idea of yachting chronograph early on, though it never materialized. All that’s left of these trials are an extremely limited number of Daytona ref. 6239 chronograph prototypes with a 39mm case (vs standard 36mm) and modified regatta dials.

Unfortunately, the Yacht-Master concept was scrapped and would not reappear until decades later.

Rolex Submariner With Date Window

When it did return, none of the previous Yacht-Master’s DNA was there. Furthermore, the 1992 Yacht-Master was bizarrely similar to the 16610 Sub of the time.

Interestingly enough, Rolex folklore tells of a time in the ’80s when the brand sought to update their Submariner . What resulted was less of an update and more of an overhaul, manifested as what we know now as the first Yacht-Master.

Apprehensive of the repercussions that making such aggressive design changes to their staple offering could bring, the brand chose instead to release the watch intended to be a new Submariner as the reborn Yacht-Master instead.

The move worked, and the new Yacht-Masters started flying off the shelves. The Yacht-Master was perceived as a more luxurious Sub, though its bidirectional bezel proved useful for on-the-fly countdowns which are critical in sailing competitions. The waterproof nature of the Oyster case further cemented the Yacht-Master as the ideal first mate.

Mid-Size & Ladies’ Yacht-Master

In 1994, just two years after the debut of the 16628, Rolex would introduce the same design but in smaller case sizes. These were:

  • Ref. 68628: Yacht-Master “Mid-Size” in 35mm
  • Ref. 69628: Yacht-Master Ladies’ in 29mm

This marked the first time that Rolex ever offered one of their sports models in a smaller case size; all previous instances of case size changes were increases as opposed to reductions. It has been speculated that the smaller cases were intended for the Asian market.

Rolex Yacht-Master Yellow Gold 16628

Yacht-Master ref. 16628. Instagram: @thewatchcentre

In the same year, Rolex also offered the same 16628 but this time with a deep blue dial. Blue dials tend to make for broadly-liked watches, and coupled with the gold case and bracelet, the new version was once again a hit.

The Platinum (Rolesium) Yacht-Master

The next update to the model line would come in 1999 with yet another home-run: the Rolesium Yacht-Master. The new watch featured a stainless steel case and bracelet with a platinum dial and platinum-insert bezel. Rolesium, a term registered by Rolex back in the ’30s for a combination of steel and platinum in a watch, was finally put to use.

The new platinum Yacht-Master ref. 16622 was not only more accessible than the previous all-gold varieties, it was also more versatile. This would lead the 16622 variety to become the face of the Yacht-Master line.

In fact, many online resources erroneously label it the first Yacht-Master ever; this should offer an idea of how emblematic it is in the watch industry.

The 16622 also presented a new dial and hand style that would mark Rolex as a whole through to the modern day. The new Yacht-Master boasted what is now recognized as the “maxi dial”.

Yellow Gold Rolex Yacht-Master Blue Dial 16628

Rolex Yacht-Master 16628 w/ maxi dial. Instagram: @kellokonttori

The maxi dial is characterized by oversized hour indices as well as larger hands at center. To the untrained eye, the difference may be difficult to spot, though experienced collectors will note the change instantly.

The maxi dial became the style of choice for all modern Rolex sports watches, though it got its start in the 1999 platinum Yacht-Master. A Submariner would first feature a maxi dial in 2003, with the release of the 50th anniversary Rolex Submariner “Kermit” (16610LV).

All versions of the Yacht-Master produced after the introduction of the maxi dial would also feature the new dial design. This included the blue, gold, and white dial versions from years past.

The Two-Tone (Rolesor) Yacht-Master

Six years after the Rolesium Yacht-Master came to be, Rolex would once more put on display their mixed-metal Rolesor style in the two-tone Yacht-Master 16623.

Two-Tone Rolex Yacht-Master Blue Dial 16823

Yacht-Master ref. 16623. Instagram: @v.davidofftimepieces

The 2005 debuts possessed a 40mm steel case, a yellow gold bidirectional bezel, and a two-tone Oyster bracelet. As far as dials, many of the previous styles were also available like the black-on-white, though mother of pearl version were also introduced.

It was during Baselworld 2007 when Rolex would introduce the Yacht-Master’s younger and much larger sibling, the Yacht-Master II. Whereas the original Yacht-Master was very close functionally to the Sub, the Yacht-Master II was completely the opposite.

It can be said that the only overlap between the YM and the YMII is be the name, as the second iteration looks like a whole new watch. This time, though, it’s clear that the watch has been designed with the needs of yachting professionals in mind.

Rolex Yacht-Master II In Yellow Gold

The first Yacht-Master II were marked by a 44mm Oyster case, an Oyster bracelet, a white dial,  and a blue Cerachrom (ceramic) Ring Command bezel. The first two references, 116688 and 116689, were made of yellow gold and white gold, respectively.

Powering the YMII was another innovation – Rolex’s in-house calibre 4161. It features the COSC-chronometer certification and 72-hour power reserve that are today’s standard, though they were industry-leading at the time. Most notable, though, was the 4161 movement’s functions.

The new caliber boasted a “ programmable countdown with mechanical memory and on-the-fly synchronization. ” Naturally, the programming of the movement required the use of the Ring Command bezel, a feature which had also never been encountered on a Rolex watch before.

In later years, Rolex would go on to release Rolesor and full-steel versions of the Yacht-Master II, both of which have been relatively successful. The Yacht-Master II has certainly earned a spot in the brand’s catalog, and is sure to stick around for next couple of decades.

The Six-Digit Yacht-Master

Rolex Yacht-Master 116622 Cobalt Blue Dial j

Yacht-Master 116622

Twenty years after it debuted as the 16628, the Yacht-Master would see in 2012 the modernization that had been sweeping Rolex’s other model families.

Aside from receiving a new six-digit reference number (116622), subtle aesthetic changes were also present, as was an outstanding new dial option – the Cobalt Blue dial.

The case was now a “super case”, which retained the 40mm diameter but was styled differently. The bezel was now completely platinum, where previous versions were made of steel with a platinum insert. The Oyster bracelet had likewise been upgraded.

A platinum bezel / platinum dial option was still part of the collection and therefore received the same upgrades. Unfortunately, this iconic “albino” look would be completely discontinued in 2017.

The subsequent and most recent significant change to the Yacht-Master family took place in 2015, when Rolex first introduced the Everose Yacht-Master 40 ref. 116655.

Rolex Everose Yacht-Master On Oysterflex Bracelet

Rolex Everose Yacht-Master on Oysterflex bracelet

The newest iteration of the YM possessed some new features. The case was made of Everose, and the bezel now boasted a black Cerachrom insert. Securing the watch to the wrist was another Rolex first – the Oysterflex rubber ‘bracelet’.

Before the 116655, no Rolex watch had ever sported a rubber band. The brand still refers to it as a bracelet given the metal elements within the band, but these are not obvious even with the watch in the hand.

This same style of Yacht-Master would receive the next update in 2019, when Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master 42 in white gold.

What’s Next?

With the recent changes that the Yacht-Master line has had, it is clear that Rolex intends to keep this model family alive and well for years to come. Consumers are likewise responding to each new release, offering plenty of feedback with their pocketbooks.

Bidirectional rotatable bezel, timing the distance.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

Bright blue dial

Exceptional legibility.

Like all Rolex Professional watches, the Yacht-Master 40 offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, and especially in the dark, thanks to its Chromalight display.

The broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes – triangles, circles, rectangles – are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow.

A legendary combination

Many Rolex watches are available with the now-legendary combination of yellow, white or Everose gold and steel known as Rolesor, but Rolesium is a creation specific to the Yacht-Master.

While the case and bracelet are in rugged Oystersteel, the bezel of the Rolesium versions is made of platinum, imparting a silvery whiteness and vibrant luminosity for an unmistakable sense of luxury.

The Oyster bracelet

Alchemy of form and function.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.

Immaculate condition with like-new appearance. Watch works flawlessly. Beautiful watch over-all.

Like a new . Excelent beautyfull

Excellent quality preowned Rolex at a fair price. Prompt service and good selection.

I’m local in Newport so it was easy to go see the watch. Service was fantastic and the watch is in great condition, better than description. I will most definitely do business with Bobs again

No hassle super fast shipping, reasonable pricing, impeccable product-like BRAND NEW not even a tiny bit of scratch anywhere! Would definitely buy again here at Bob’s, sadly waitlisted on a few other watches.

The watch is exactly was I have been looking for, for the better part of a year. The case has a slimmer design than the submariner, which is better for cuffed shirts. It is the right blend of dress & casual, which is exactly what I needed.

super fast delivery, very helpful and professional on the phone. Watch very nice overall.

Rumor has it.. Discontinued Rolex Models 2024

Yes, we’re back again with another update on one of the most famous brands in the luxury watch market: Rolex. We’ve seen some insight information about the models or dials that will be discontinued in 2024. What’s coming up? We will tell you all about it, to share the latest updates with you.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II: Leaving the catalogue?

Some say it’s probably one of the coolest watches around, some say it’s one of the ugliest watches within the Rolex catalog: the Yacht-Master II . The Yacht-Master II has been in production since 2009 and is still in production in steel, two-tone gold or solid white gold. The steel version is the most affordable Yacht-Master II and will set you back around €15.000 for the 116680. The yellow gold or white gold version will cost you around €35.000, which is some serious money to be fair. On a personal note, I’m not a big fan of the Yacht-Master II since it’s too bulky and shiny, I’d prefer the Yacht-Master on the Oysterflex strap. Reason we’re naming the Yacht-Master II is the fact that rumor has it that Rolex will discontinue this model in 2024. Will there be a successor for the Yacht-Master II or is the fun over?

Discontinued Dial: No more Motifs?

One of the least popular models within the Rolex Datejust collection is probably the Palm-Dial, which is a dial with a palm motif. It’s available in 36mm and comes as a green version, a champagne palm dial or silver. Starting in 2021, Rolex introduced the palm dial on the 36mm Datejust for the first time. These palm dials can be found on the smooth and fluted bezel Datejusts, and can be found with Rolesor version, steel and white gold piece or the rose gold one. Prices of these watches vary from €12.000 up to €18.000 for the 126284RBR. Rumor has it that Rolex will discontinue the palm dial. What’s your thought on these dials?

New GMT-Master II watches: Coke and Sprite with a twist!?

When taking a look at the Rolex GMT-Master II models, there are some rumors going around town aswell. First and foremost, there is being speculated that the GMT Master 16710 ‘Coke’ is getting a re-edition. This would most likely be a 6-digit GMT master II ending with NRRO (Noir/Rouge). While the neo-vintage 16710 Coke sells for something around €14.000 in like-new condition, the list price for a new GMT-Master II Coke will be somewhere around €13.000.

The GMT-Master II series has an other piece with some rumors surrounding the watch. This watch is the 126720VTNR , or better known as the Rolex ‘Sprite’ or ‘Lefty’. It is said that this piece wil also be seen with a bezel covered in diamonds. If we are going to see a GMT-Master II lefty covered in stones, it might be a 126720SANR with sapphires and black diamonds. List prices of these watches would probably be close to €80.000. The marketprice of similar pieces like the 126755SARU is upwards of €120.000! Can you believe that?

Rolex Expanding their Catalogue: New models to be added?

There are some rumors going around in the United States about some new models that Rolex will be launching this year. There are sources that tell us that Rolex has registered some new US-Trademark names. These names are the following: Rolex Land-Dweller, Rolex Coast-Dweller, Rolex Oystermatic. This makes it seem like Rolex is exploring the options with retiring the Yacht-Master II, but expanding their Sea-Dweller range. Is this going to be an even more sporty variant of the Sea-Dweller ? Only time will tell!

Rolex in 2024: The Salvation will be Watches & Wonders

The world of luxury watches is buzzing with anticipation and speculation as we delve into the rumors surrounding Rolex's plans for 2024. The possibility of the iconic Yacht-Master II being discontinued raises questions about its future, leaving enthusiasts to ponder if a successor will emerge. Meanwhile, the rumored discontinuation of the Palm-Dial in the Datejust collection adds an element of uncertainty for those who appreciate its distinctive motifs. On the flip side, exciting prospects emerge with potential re-editions of the GMT-Master II 'Coke' and 'Sprite' models, featuring unique twists that could captivate collectors. Additionally, the prospect of Rolex expanding their catalogue with names like Land-Dweller, Coast-Dweller, and Oystermatic sparks curiosity about what new adventures the brand may embark upon. As we eagerly await the official announcements that will probably come at the start of Watches & Wonders 2024, one thing is certain – Rolex continues to stir the horological world with its intriguing moves, leaving enthusiasts on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the brand's storied history.

A NEW DECADE FOR ROLEX WATCHES: THE DISCONTINUED AND THE NEWCOMERS

a new decade for Rolex watches

How the year 2020 turned out to be one heck of a year for everybody remains amazing. In a lot of ways, we all felt the effects of the dramatic turns and challenges of that year. Interestingly, the global pandemic seems to be one surefire catalyst for change especially for the Rolex brand. It was a new decade for Rolex watches.

For Rolex, this new decade for Rolex watches witnessed both the discontinued watches and the newcomers. The brand introduced completely modern watch designs. The kind we never anticipated from them.

Even though these times were clearly unusual times, Rolex discontinued pieces were not entirely unusual. Rolex has discontinued timepieces nearly every year. The brand sometimes does this boldly and to the huge displeasure of watch lovers. While in other situations, specific models just subtly leave the scene. For these ones, we often don’t even realize they are gone.

A New Decade For Rolex Watches: The Discontinued

Rolex discontinued and newcomers

Over time, this strategy helped the brand greatly for over a century. Presently, even as they do not bother about our needs, they are still slightly predictable. Actually, that is if you take the time to pay the slightest attention and how much experience you have.

At least, there are three Rolex timepieces that became or will become discontinued versions in 2021. This is first an “insider” perception. Then it combines with recalling tiny details on the Rolex website. This details might be:

  • The timepiece which images the brand choose as featured images
  • The timepieces they show often on Instagram

These are not all. There are other clever tiny details. All these serve as pointers from which you can be sure what the brand is up to. For now, check out these three discontinued timepieces.

The Departure Of Leather Strap Options

discontinued leather strap options

Presently, you can no longer find alligator or leather strap options on any of these Rolex watches.

  • The Sky-Dweller
  • The Day-Dates
  • The DateJust

In clear fact, there are no leather strap options at all for any Rolex timepiece except from the Rolex Cellini.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40mm In Steel

Rolex enthusiasts had the hunch that the Rolex Yacht-Master 40mm in Oyster Steel will become a discontinued piece in 2021. At that point, it felt random. Yet, it still made a lot of sense when you consider it very closely.

To begin with, in 2019, the Yacht-Master in Steel got itself a new movement, the caliber 3235. Yet, surprisingly this isn’t even spoken of at the 2019 Baselworld fair. Plus, there was very limited press attention, promotion or acknowledgement of that addition. Enough to say that the timepiece would be a discontinued piece. Now, the new decade of Rolex watches just affirmed that suspicion.

More so, the price tag of $12,000 is just unusual. For instance, try comparing the ref. 116610LN Submariner Date and the ref. 126622 Yacht-Master 40. You will discover several resemblances. The only difference is in the price which comes in at about $3,000-$4,000 more than the Submariner date.

This will leave buyers wondering what earns the Yacht-Master a higher cost that much than the Submariner. Well, the Yacht-Master might offer some platinum which provides it that status of luxury. And, it is in some ways narrowly more of a dress watch than the Submariner. Regardless, what makes it worth that additional $3,000-$4,000 is very debatable.

We believe that with this new decade for Rolex watches, the brand has a plan for this timepiece. For us, that plan might be to boost the Yacht-Master again to its initial status of luxury. That way, the emphasis will be on making the most of extra precious metals. The brand will also wish to continue with the larger, yacht-sized case measurements. Certainly, that will be worth a higher price.

The Candy-Colored Oyster Perpetual Line

Before we proceed, take a moment to consider this. Is there any justification for Rolex to discontinue something that is brand-new? Why would the brand discontinue a greatly flourishing timepiece?

Well, these reasons only point to the fact that Rolex doesn’t care about these sorts of considerations.

For the Oyster Perpetual candy-colored collection as a discontinued timepiece, we saw certain signals. First off, the brilliant colors are truly lovely. Yet, they are not just on brand with Rolex. Well, these timepieces scream “limited edition” all through.

And for Rolex, this is something the brand loves to do without ever dubbing it outright as a “limited edition.” The Rolex brand prefers having their timepieces in high demand with extensive wait lists. That is one way to keep the passion and desire thriving. Truly, imagine this case where everyone could get one of these timepieces. Then, nobody would still want one.

Furthermore, there is another pointer to this discontinued timepiece. That is their advertising. As soon as the Oyster Perpetual line got released, Rolex barely advertised these bright colors. The brand did not even recognize their presence.

Rolex had an intense emphasis on the Champagne, Silver dials as well as the black dials. However, they virtually never exhibited the colorful dials even with its vast popularity.

Again, we understand that Rolex doesn’t bother about the popularity of any timepiece at all. The brand retains the focus on quality watches to make watch lovers tell the time grandly.

A New Decade For Rolex Watches: The Newcomers

Rolex discontinued and newcomers

The biggest of these newcomers is the strong and efficient new Oyster Perpetual collection.

The colorful candy colors nearly seem unlike the trend you expect from Rolex. We can draw an analogy with when the queen of England dons a neon yellow outfit. Then, she stands against the background of the historically rooted and very grand and neutral painted Royal Palace.

Then, the question came to the queen as to why she always rocks these bright colors. In her defence, she stated that she wishes and needs to be recognized by the general public. Whenever she finds herself in that sea of thousands of spectators, she wants everyone there to say, “I saw the Queen!”

Maybe Rolex has this same feeling. For them, they know it is a sea of several incredible timepieces. And in that sea of watches, they wish to stand out and be a distinguished brand. And similar to what the Queen has, Rolex will enjoy that privilege. After all, Rolex is also a royalty in the world of wristwatches.

Their royalty is no doubt. Remember that this watchmaking brand carries the tag of “The Crown.” The Rolex brand really makes that audacious move with their recent OP collection.

Consider this well-known quote from the Queen. She says, “I have to be seen to be believed.” Compare this with the new OP collection. There is no difference at all.

Moreover, these new Rolex watches are tougher to get compared to the Submariners. As expected, the waitlists are even longer than the rest. Presently, this is the most distinguished and highly sought-after Rolex collection available out there. For watch lovers that do have these timepieces, they explain that you have to see these watches to believe the real color of their dials.

The Rolex Newcomers: The Oyster Perpetual Collection Varieties

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual collection now comes in a vast assortment of 9 varied dial colorations. In addition, it varies in sizes. There is a delicate 28mm and more others up to a huge 41mm size.

However, there is the fact that the ever-famous 39mm size is no longer a part of the collection. As a result, Rolex timepieces in that size are much more costly when you want to get them on the second-hand market.

Dial Colors

The dial color options presented by this stainless steel watch include:

  • Yellow which is more mustard-like
  • A kelly green
  • Bright navy blue
  • Turquoise blue
  • A double shade of pink which includes a regular pink and candy pink.

For more conservative watch lovers, a classic silver or champagne, and black will be perfect. When you rock this timepiece at night, it lights up the whole place. This is thanks to Rolex’s brilliant blue Chromalight lume. This lume comes together with the hands and hour markers on the dial.

Moreover, we recently discovered a fun fact that the stainless steel bracelet on the latest Oyster Perpetual 41. The timepiece appears to have the exact bracelet connection the Datejust 41 features. In a way, this is a cool discovery. It probably suggests that the bracelets are switchable. Simply ensure you make use of the right tool kit.

When you check on Instagram, you will see a few persons sporting this timepiece on a jubilee bracelet. With the jubilee bracelet, the watch seems even more fierce and flamboyant.

The double-indices featured on varieties of this timepiece appear at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock markers. These indices are essential aspects of this structure as well. It is interesting to note that there is only one size made without a double indice. This size is the 34mm size featured in the Ref 124200.

This variation is available in just 4 colors. They are:

  • Dark blue.

Furthermore, this iteration again features sneaky tiny roman figures where the other iterations have none. Why did Rolex make the dial on this size a tad different than the rest? We cannot say at this point. Yet, it is a noticeable difference.

Conclusively, it is crucial to point out that you cannot get all the colors in every size. You can only get all the 9 colors with the 31mm size.

Alongside this new introduction, Rolex again launched a new in-house movement. This is the Calibre 3230 which comes in the 36 and 41mm varieties of this timepiece. This movement is the same ever-remarkable movement that is present in the recent 41mm Submariner time-only wristwatch.

The timepiece features a patented chronergy escapement. This is an automatic and self-winding movement as well. In addition, it comes suited with a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring. This movement is better absorbent to shock. This is thanks to its built in Paraflex shock absorbers. More so, the timepiece parades a wonderful 70 hour power reserve.

Alt-Image: Rolex discontinued and newcomers

Likewise, the smaller versions of the timepiece comprise an outstanding movement in the Caliber 2232. Hence, the biggest distinction is a Syloxi hairspring rather than a Parachrom. All the Oyster Perpetual timepieces are water resistant to as far as 330 feet.

Considering the price point it comes in, it is between $5,100 to $5,900. We can say then that the timepieces are entry level pricing for Rolex. Hence, they are more affordable compared to some of the other timepieces in the line.

For Rolex as a watchmaker, it is beyond producing timepieces for sale. This is one message the brand continues to express with their products. Year after year, the brand keeps introducing fresh timepieces and takes out the ones deemed to be irrelevant.

It is a new decade for Rolex watches. And with a new decade for Rolex watches comes a number of discontinued timepieces. A new decade for Rolex watches likewise brings along with it newcomers.

We introduced a major one amongst the newcomers. In addition, we provided details on the discontinued timepieces and features.

All of these details get you furnished with enough knowledge of the Rolex watchmaking brand. Why did Rolex create a new Oyster Perpetual line? Why did the brand get rid of most of its leather strap options? Why is the Yachtmaster 41 model discontinued? All of these follow a new decade for Rolex watches.

Rolex Yacht-Master 126622 Review & Complete Guide

Rolex Yacht-Master 126622 vs 116622

Rolex Yacht-Master 126622 Review & Complete Guide

Before we dig into this article, do note that this is not the reference 116622 but rather the reference 126622. But if you are interested in the 116622, this article will be helpful still.

The Rolex Yacht-Master reference was released a Baselworld 2016. The Yacht-Master model has always established itself as a luxury sports watch in Rolex’s range, which is a bit more elegant than a Submariner, but a little more sporty than a Datejust.

It is a great combination of elegance and sportiness – a combination which a lot of people really enjoy.

The two-sided personality Yacht-Master 116622 is meant for yacht-owners, and thereby its name. In this article, we’ll go into detail about the Rolex Yacht-Master 126622.

Rolex Yacht-Master 126622

As mentioned a new Yacht-Master version was released in 2016, but at Baselworld 2019, Rolex found that the model needed to be updated once again. This time, no major visual differences were done, as in 2016 when Rolex introduced a new dial, among other things. This time, the change was simply a step into the direction of moving to Rolex’s new generation movements. This year, it was the Yacht-Master 116622’s time for an update.

Rolex Yacht-Master 116622 Blue

And since we have already gotten started talking about movements, let’s begin with that.

Rolex Yacht-Master movement

The previous generation Yacht-Master 116622 is powered by the Rolex caliber 3135. This is considered Rolex’s workhorse and has been used by the brand since 1988. While this caliber has proven the test of time, there is always room for improvements, and this time, Rolex gave Yacht-Master to the new movement, which is the Caliber 3235. Remember, Rolex is about evolution, not revolution, and while this change of movement can’t be seen as a huge update to the model, it does improve its reliability and quality. And this is what Rolex is all about.

yachtmaster blue dial discontinued

The previous caliber 3135 provides a power reserve of around 48 hours and as of 2015—a year before the launch of the Yacht-Master ref. 116622—Rolex redefined its “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” designation to guarantee an impressive accuracy rating of -2/+2 seconds per day. The self-winding caliber also boasts the paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring for improved resistance to magnetic fields and daily knocks.

Now, with the new caliber 3235 and Yacht-Master 126622, things have been updated. And therefore, thanks to a new barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3255 extends to three days. This is an increase of 1 day of power reserve.

yachtmaster blue dial discontinued

The 3255 is a new-generation mechanical movement with 14 patents, which sets new standards of performance for the core characteristics of a watch movement: precision, power reserve, reliability, resistance to shocks and magnetism, as well as the ease and convenience of its adjustment.

The Chronergy escapement’s efficiency has been improved by 15%, it is 2x more precise than an official chronometer. Like the previous 3135, it has a Parachrom hairspring which is insensitive to magnetic fields and temperature variations, and up to 10 times more resilient to shocks than traditional hairsprings.

As you have noticed, the reference has changed to start with 12 instead of 11 for this new model, and this is to demonstrate the use of the new generation caliber.

yachtmaster blue dial discontinued

For some, these slight improvements in the movement of the Yacht-Master may not seem like a lot. But the fact of the matter is that it is because of improvements like these that Rolex is what it is today.

As you would expect, the 126622 features a quickset date function where the date us adjusted independently from the center timekeeping hands in order to make adjusting the date quick and effortless. It is also equipped with hacking seconds which means the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled out in order to allow for precise time-setting.

Now, the Yacht-Master 126622 is not a full-blooded dive watch , but it does have a water-resistance of 100-meters (330 feet). Think of the Submariner as a robust tool watch and the Yacht-Master as the yacht-owners watch who may just satisfy with a relaxing morning swim from the yacht.

To keep dust and water out from the case, the watch features a Triplock screw-down winding crown and a robust casebook.

Yacht-Master case

Most people have heard of Rolesor – Rolex’s own combination of gold and steel. But not equally many people know what Rolesium is. The Yacht-Master uses Rolesium, and this is when rugged stainless steel and ultra-precious platinum meet on a Rolex watch. The case and bracelet are made of 904L stainless steel, but the bezel of the watch is actually made completely in platinum. While both are white metals, platinum gets a completely unique sheen compared to steel and thus creates a discreet contrast. The use of platinum is also proof of the fact that this model is positioned more as a luxury sports watch.

Rolex Yacht-Master 126622 Rhodium macro

Because of the fact that both the bezel and steel case is made in white metals, the watch tends to look monochromatic. But this is contrasted by the stunning rich blue dial. If you decide to opt for the rhodium dial, the contrast is not that great as it is with blue.

The case is 40mm in diameter. It has a thickness of 11.5 mm and Lug Width : 20 mm. In comparison, the Rolex Submariner 116610 is 12.5 mm in thickness. So the Yacht-Master is slimmer, which thus also allows it to better slip under a cuff.

This brings us to the bezel:

The bezel of the Yacht-Master 126622 has high-polished raised numerals set against a sandblasted background to the polished center links on the bracelet flanked by the brushed-finish outer links. The Yacht-Master 126622 is the only sports watch from Rolex which features this many polished elements. But this is of course in line with the way Rolex positions this watch as an elegant sports watch – not robust sports watch.

The bezel is bi-directional and has 120 clicks in both directions. As Rolex suggests, ”This functional bezel allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys”.

When it comes to the dials, you currently have two dial combinations to choose from. Either a rich blue sunburst dial which catches the light beautifully and completely changes its appearance depending on how the light hits it. Or, you can choose a rhodium dial which has a not-so-Rolex-like baby blue/Miami blue seconds hand that creates a nice contrast against the dial. You also have the Yacht-Master text printed in the same color.

The only way you will be able to tell the 116622 from the 126622 apart is by looking at 6 o’clock on the dial. On the 116622, it will say ”Swiss made”. But on the new reference, it will say ”Swiss (Rolex crown) Made”. This is to show that it has a new generation movement. Apart from this, it will be impossible to tell them apart (unless you open them up or look at the engraved reference number on the case.

Rolex Yacht-Master 116622 Blue

The 126622 has a strong lume which allows for good readability. As mentioned briefly, it features a date function, with the date window placed at 3 o’clock and the Cyclops magnification lens on the sapphire crystal.

Rolex Yacht-Master 126622 Rhodium macro

Being a sporty watch, it features the iconic and robust Oyster bracelet.

To enhance its elegance, it has polished middle links. The clasp has Rolex’s clever Easlylink comfort extension link which allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.

116622 is now replaced with the 126622: New dial and Movement

The update from 116622 is obviously not huge from a visual perspective. But the fact of the matter is, that’s not what Rolex about. Evolution, not revolution. At the end of the day, the update of the movement was due because of the many years it has been used. Ultimately, this will lead to a more reliable and qualitative timepiece that will last through generations.

What are your thoughts on the Rolex Yacht-Master 126622? Do you think they should have made more major updates to the model?

I’ve heard this new model also has an easy glide clasp the same as on a sub. I didn’t think the older model had it. I’ll find out for sure on Sunday when I collect mine.

' src=

Hi Steven, The 126622 has the Easylink extension system. Not the Glidelock clasp. Congratulations in advance on a stunning timepiece!

Kind regards, Millenary Watches

' src=

I watched a review of the latest GMT II that uses this caliber, and while all is well & good, the reviewer did point out that the new rotor mechanism for this caliber is very noisy! Which I find very disappointing for a contemporary Rolex I’m afraid.

Hi David, The Yacht-Master 126622 does not have a GMT hand so does not use the same caliber as the GMT II. The Yacht-Master uses the cal 3235. The GMT uses the caliber 3285.

' src=

I bought the 126622 with slate dial. I believe case is also slightly different from 116622 – is that correct?

Hi, The main difference is the movement. There has not been any communication regarding the case of the watch but there is a possibility that there has been a tiny change which is barely noticeable.

' src=

If one wanted to “upgrade” their movement from a 3135 to a 3235 can they be swapped without case modification?

Hi, Rolex will not change to a new caliber in an old reference. If you would want to make this change, you would have to source the movement yourself and have an independent watchmaker install it. And finding complete calibers on the secondhand market is very difficult..

' src=

I will like the option of a Black dial on the 40 126622.. it would be beautiful.

That sounds like a great idea! Perhaps Rolex doesn’t want it to be too similar to the Submariner, which could be the explanation why they are not making it.

' src=

I’ve heard some people say that the dial of 116622 contains rhodium and the dial of 126622 does not contain rhodium. Do you think these statements are valid?

Hello, That sounds a bit strange. The 116622 has a platinum dial with a shiny effect. If anything, it would be more reasonable that the 126622 has a rhodium dial.

Guide To Popular Rolex Yacht-Master Models

Rolex debuted the Yacht-Master watch in 1992 as a luxury sports watch crafted in precious gold yet durable enough for an active life at sea. The nautical-inspired Rolex watch featured a rotating timing bezel, a water-resistance rating of 100 meters, and a time and date dial. The Yacht-Master shared many design traits with the famed Submariner watch—such as a similar dial layout, case silhouette, and bracelet style—but it was a touch more luxurious thanks to its own set of design details. Over the course of its history, the Rolex Yacht-Master collection has expanded into a varied lineup with watches offered in several sizes, materials, and colors. Here’s a guide to some of the most popular Rolex Yacht-Master watches, ranging from discontinued models to current-production ones.

Where it all began:

The very first Yacht-Master model that Rolex released was a full yellow gold version. It sported a 40mm yellow gold case, a yellow gold rotating bezel with raised numerals, and a yellow gold three-link Oyster bracelet. Two years later in 1994, Rolex followed it up with two other yellow gold models—a ladies’ 29mm version and a midsize 35mm version. While Rolex no longer produces full yellow gold Yacht-Master models, they remain popular in the secondary market.

In 2015, Rolex introduced the very first Everose gold (the brand’s own rose gold pink alloy) Yacht-Master. However, rather than a full gold model, the Everose gold Yacht-Master models (available in 40mm and 37mm) included black ceramic bezels with raised numerals and a brand new black rubber-clad metal band called the Oysterflex bracelet. Dial options include sleek black and lavish diamond-paved. It’s also worth mentioning that there are some rare Everose gold Yacht-Master 40 models furnished with rotating bezels set with multi-colored precious gems (diamond, sapphire, and tsavorite).

Here is a flamboyant version of it of the Everose gold Yacht-Master 40:

Finally, in 2019, Rolex released the first white gold Yacht-Master watch. Not only is this the only white gold Yacht-Master model ever made, but with its 42mm case, it is also the largest.

Similar to the Everose gold model, the white gold Yacht-Master is fitted with a black ceramic bezel and black Oysterflex bracelet, along with a black dial.

Prices (current collection):

  • Everose Gold Yacht-Master 37 ref. 268655: $23,250 - 41,000
  • Everose Gold Yacht-Master 40 ref. 126655: $27,300 – 47,150
  • White Gold Yacht-Master 40 ref. 226659: $28,900

Rolesium Rolex Yacht-Master Models

In 1999, Rolex presented a new metal combination the brand called Rolesium, which brings together stainless steel and platinum on one watch. Like the yellow gold models, the Rolesium Yacht-Master models were offered in 40mm, 35mm, and 29mm versions.

Regardless of the size, all the watches include stainless steel cases, stainless steel Oyster bracelets, and platinum rotating bezels with raised numerals. Particular popular versions of the Rolesium Yacht-Master watches are those with sandblasted platinum dials—although discontinued, these platinum dial Yacht-Masters are still widely available in the pre-owned market.

Currently, Rolex still makes steel and platinum Yacht-Master watches. However, size options have been scaled down to 40mm and 37mm since Rolex stopped making 29mm or 35mm versions of the Yacht-Master around 2015. The Rolesium Yacht-Master 40 offers the choice between a rhodium gray or a blue dial while the Rolesium Yacht-Master 37 only comes with a rhodium gray dial.

Prices (current collection):

  • Rolesium Yacht-Master 37 ref. 268622: $11,250
  • Rolesium Yacht-Master 40 ref. 126622: $12,000

Rolesor Rolex Yacht-Master Models

Rolesor is the term Rolex gives to its models that mix gold and steel details—better known as two-tone watches. The first two-tone Yacht-Master watches, which featured steel cases topped with yellow gold bezels and steel Oyster bracelets with yellow gold center links, were launched in the mid-1990s. However, Rolesor Yacht-Master watches were first only offered in midsize (35mm) and ladies (29mm) sizes. The men’s 40mm two-tone yellow gold and stainless steel Yacht-Master joined the lineup in the early 2000s. Rolex stopped making yellow gold and steel Yacht-Master models a few years back but the brand has replaced them with another Rolesor option—two-tone Everose gold and steel ones. The current-production two-tone Yacht-Master models include stainless steel cases topped with Everose gold bezels and stainless steel Oyster bracelets with Everose gold center links. The Everose Rolesor models are available with 40mm or 37mm cases and both sizes offer the option between a black or brown dial.

  • Everose Rolesor Yacht-Master 37 ref. 268621: $13,150
  • Everose Rolesor Yacht-Master 40 ref. 126621: $14,500

In less than three decades, the Yacht-Master has grown to become Rolex’s most diverse sports watch collection, offering a vast assortment of sizes and styles for both men and women. From the discontinued models to the current-production ones, the Yacht-Master’s distinct combination of luxury and robustness has paved the way for its enduring popularity.

The Rolex watches that will be discontinued in 2024

Yes, you've read it correctly. this is a confirmed list of watches set to be discontinued from the rolex watch catalogue in april 2024. how do we know this well-kept secret we've been in touch with various authorised dealers from different brands and have collated consistent information across all of them. with a 99% degree of certainty, we can say that the following watches will be discontinued at the upcoming watches and wonders event., yacht-master ii.

Yacht Master II 2024

All watches from the Yacht Master II collection will be discontinued, encompassing all variations in steel, Rolesor, and full gold pieces. While this news may not surprise many Rolex collectors, it deals a significant blow to the Yacht Master line, which first debuted in 2007 . The decision to discontinue stems from the Yacht Master II’s sales performance falling short of its smaller siblings, the Yacht Master and GMT Master. While we might see some fluctuations in its price, its lack of popularity suggests limited potential for a resurgence.

Datejust Motif Dials:

Datejust 2024

Another notable discontinuation is the Rolex Datejust Motif dials, known for their rarity and difficulty to acquire. As of April 2024, all variations of the motif dials found on steel and Rolesor models in 36mm and 41mm sizes will cease production. Among the most sought-after were the green palm 36mm Datejust and the green & blue motif Datejust 41. Expect these watches to appreciate in value, potentially by around 10% over current secondary prices.

Oyster Perpetuals – Coloured Dials

Oyster perpetual 2024

A significant blow to new and upcoming Rolex collectors is the discontinuation of the Oyster Perpetual coloured dials introduced in 2020 . When these dials debuted, they enjoyed immense popularity, with most fetching a substantial premium, especially in the larger case sizes. With news of their discontinuation, these relatively affordable pieces are poised to skyrocket in value, with an estimated 30% increase over current premiums.

So what is coming up next from Rolex?

Given the prominence of these discontinued models, one can reasonably expect Rolex to introduce replacement models. Stay tuned for our next article – The New Rolex Model for 2024 – Name Revealed! for further insights.

Owner review: Rolex Yacht Master 16622

The forgotten rolex wildcard..

Rolex Yacht Master 16622

The 1980s was a time of innovation at Rolex, with a refresh of everything in the Rolex catalog and putting a more modern and premium look to the entire line up. Gone are the days of Matte Painted dials, and hand-wound movements of the Daytona but in with the new Glossy dials, White Gold Indices and Sapphire Crystals, similar to the Rolex Line-Up you see today. The 1980s brought change aesthetically and internally to the entire catalog, but while Rolex was in development of the then new Submariner 16610, the iconic design you know today was a redesign of the original?

In the 1980s, Rolex wanted to significantly update and modernize the Rolex Submariner and give a more modern take of the outgoing Submariner 16800 of the late 70s-mid 80s. Rolex experimented with several designs, trying to give a more modern look while keeping the essence and design aspects of a submariner. They were adamant about keeping the submariner DNA for the new redesign and were scared that when unveiled, the design may not appeal to the fans of the brand and the submariner. We are of course talking about one of the most iconic and recognisable watches of all time. The thing was, they really liked the new design, since its more sleek and modern than the outgoing 16800. At the end of the day the Submariner 16610 you know and love came out and was an instant hit and the rest was history. But what happened to the prototype design? The Rolex Yacht Master 16622 was born.

Rolex Yachtmaster 16622

In 1997, we saw the introduction of the Stainless steel Rolex Yacht Master 16622. The 16622 series came in two dial variations Blue and wait for it…..Platinum. You Read it right, they used a solid platinum dial and a platinum rotating bezel, unique only to the Yachtmaster Line. This was the first time Rolex has experimented with the mix of elements being steel and Platinum in a sports watch .

The Rolex Yacht Master 16622 was also the first new release to use super luminova instead of tritium. The Rolesium Yacht Master was seen as a very unique watch that was somewhat oddball in the world of watches because of its combination of materials and its flashy looks featuring the polished centre link bracelet.

If you wanted a more elegant sports watch that looks good on formal occasions and also in the sports club, then the yacht master is the watch for you. The platinum dial glistens under the light and looks simply stunning together with the red contrast “Yacht Master” text and red seconds hand.

The Ladies 29mm and MidSize 35mm versions were also available and in my opinion, would be a stunning watch to pair with your significant other. One of the biggest drawbacks was the price, it was one of, if not the most expensive steel Rolex in the retail catalogue.

Rolex Yachtmaster 16622

The Rolex Yacht Master 16622 was updated in 2013 with the 116622. It included updates such as the more modern Rolex easy link clasp, an updated dial with thinner fonts and a smoother glossy look as opposed to the more metallic look of the old dial. The addition of super luminova instead of the old luminova also make the dial look different. Changes were also made to the bracelet with the end-links fitting much more nicely into the lugs.

Recently we have seen many things happen in the watch market . Rolex Sports Models have had a meteoric rise in value, the hype around every sports model in the Rolex range and truly there insane prices for some pieces in the Submariner ,GMT, Explorer and especially Daytona lines.

In my opinion the Rolex Yacht Master 16622 is a lot of watch for the money. You get precious metals, flashy looks, stunning dial, reliable movement, beautiful finishing and modern looks for around 8,000 USD or 400k pesos. All less than a new submariner !

Rolex Yacht Master 16622

  • One of the cheapest and best value Rolex sports models out there, or less than a new Submariner or the Submariner of its time, the yacht master is a great deal, especially if you want your first expensive piece. For collectors, this would fit collections perfectly, being a unique and elegant addition to your collection and your daily rotation.
  • The Yachtmaster has become iconic and has appeared on the wrist on many stars such as Brad Pitt, Hulk Hogan and most notably Bruce Willis.
  • Great wearability.
  • It's a Scratch Magnet, especially with the giant polished center links.
  • It's heavy, it has a good heft but it gets bothersome at times, due to its sheer weight caused by the platinum dial and bezel.
  • The size, some may find it bug due to the big bezel and smooth case, it appears bigger on some than the Submariner of the time.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
