Meet Austal’s ‘MANTA’ Catamaran Drone Mothership

New catamaran concept aims at including drone and loitering munition support for austal's trademark approach to naval shipbuilding..

Alex Luck 05 Dec 2023

One of the more intriguing concepts visitors could glimpse at Sydney’s Indopacific 2023, which ran from 4th to 6th November, was the “MANTA” drone mothership and multirole catamaran by Henderson, WA-based shipbuilder Austal . The acronym stands for “Multimission Autonomous Network Transporter (Armed)”. “MANTA” is based on Austal’s existing “Expeditionary Fast Transport” (EPF) in service with the US Navy and the “High Speed Vessel” (HSV) built for Oman.

catamaran austal

Basic specifications are a length of 78 metres, a beam of 19.3 metres, a crew of 20 and accommodation for a further 30 personnel. The catamaran would be capable of a top speed of 30 knots and a range of up to 2,700 km at 12.5 knots. Propulsion features four 4,300 kW diesel engines driving four waterjets. Living up to a role focus, the “MANTA” drone mothership would offer space for a mission bay including moon pool supporting UUVs, a wide range of containerized and modular weapons options and CEAFAR 2-radar integration. “Manta” features a helicopter landing deck and aviation workshop supporting a Seahawk-type helicopter or helicopter-drones up to MQ-8C-size , but lacks a hangar.

catamaran austal

The weapons suggested for “Manta” cover a broad spectrum aimed at antiship and land attack-roles, but also offering robust self defence capability against aerial threats. They include launchers for traditional and Harpy-type loitering munitions, Spike NLOS-type light strike missiles and smaller loitering drones in a variety of combinations. “Manta” can also integrate a RIM-116 RAM-launcher, MASS-type decoy systems and a 35 mm-autocannon on the foredeck.

catamaran austal

Illustrating the very wide range of applications, “Manta” optionally also features “The Cube” containerized solutions (by Danish company SH Defence) for mine warfare, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR). A notable emphasis is on the multi-mission bay supporting the deployment of large UUVs via the side doors and smaller drones through a moon pool integrated in the bay.

catamaran austal

In conclusion, “Manta” appears to leverage Austal’s proven capacity to develop and field innovative catamaran-type designs applied to current and anticipated threats and roles focusing on drone operation- and multi-mission capability. The design emphasizes an inherent advantage in multihull-type vessels maximizing deck and stowage space while retaining high mobility. Its derivation from existing design and integration of fielded and combat-proven weapon systems should in theory provide a relatively cost-effective design, although engineering challenges in terms of sensor integration and damage control are unknowns at this stage.

Austal lands hydrogen-capable, high-speed catamaran build contract

Swedish passenger ferry company Gotlandsbolaget has signed a letter of intent with Australian shipbuilder Austal to develop and construct a new catamaran running on alternative fuel

Horizon X will be a 130-m high-speed catamaran, designed for multi-fuel and fossil-free use, and the hope is it can also be powered by hydrogen.

“This is an important step in our climate journey. We are working on developing the ships of the future. In 2022, we presented the second ship concept in our Horizon series, Gotland Horizon X , a high-speed catamaran that will be able to operate on fossil-free fuels, and which we believe will be an excellent complement to the Gotland traffic," said Gotlandsbolaget chief executive Håkan Johansson.

Mr Johansson said the vessel will be used, especially during the summer months, to ferry passengers between the island of Gotland and the mainland over a three-hour journey.

Horizon X will cruise at 35 knots, accommodating up to 1,650 passengers with space for 450 cars.

Gotland Tech Development, a subsidiary of Gotlandsbolaget will design the ship. Gotland Tech senior partner Christer Bruzelius said passengers will be able to travel at high speeds at competitive prices.

“To minimise the energy consumption and have a high level of efficiency, we have to develop energy-efficient hulls that minimise weight, optimise energy use on board, and improve the efficiency of the operation and the flow of the vessel. Austal is a leader in the development of large catamarans” he said.

Austal chief executive Paddy Gregg said, “The memorandum of understanding with the Gotlandsbolaget acknowledges Austal is ready to design and build a high-speed catamaran, which can be powered by hydrogen, and that will help us on our journey to zero emissions.”

Austal is developing the hull, which will be optimised for different fuel types – among them hydrogen, and electricity.

“We provide solutions to the shipping companies which are in need of the high-speed ships, and we look forward to working with Gotlandsbolaget to create a new, exciting design with a high standard of service,” said Mr Gregg.

AUSTAL PHILIPPINES LAUNCHES 109 METRE CATAMARAN FERRY

catamaran austal

MEDIA RELEASE

12 FEBRUARY 2020

Austal Limited (ASX:ASB) is pleased to announce that Austal Philippines has successfully launched Hull 419, a 109 metre high-speed catamaran ferry, from the company’s recently expanded Balamban shipyard in Cebu.

The vehicle-passenger ferry, to be known as FSTR , is the largest aluminium vessel ever launched in the Philippines – and the largest by volume ever constructed by Austal.

The vessel is now in the final stages of fit out, prior to delivery to Fjord Line of Norway in the 2 nd quarter of CY2020.

Austal Chief Executive Officer David Singleton said the launch of the ‘Auto Express 109’ catamaran was a significant milestone for Austal Philippines, as the first ship to be wholly constructed from the Balamban shipyard’s expanded production facilities, which were opened in July 2019.

“This impressive new ship for Fjord Line of Norway is the first of many large, high-speed commercial ferries to be constructed at our newly expanded shipyard in the Philippines. After Hull 419, we have Hull 395, a 118 metre trimaran under construction, which will be the longest high speed ferry to be constructed in the Philippines.

“We also have a 115 metre catamaran ferry scheduled for later this year – ensuring continuity of production at the Philippines shipyard well into the 2020s,” Mr Singleton said.

Hull 395, the ‘Banaderos Express’ for Fred. Olsen Express of the Canary Islands, is a 118 metre high-speed trimaran ferry and a sister ship to Bajamar Express, launched in Australia last week. Hull 423, a 115 metre high speed catamaran ferry to be known as Express 5 , is a follow-up order from Molslinjen of Denmark and is scheduled to commence construction in Balamban in the third quarter of CY2020.

Austal Philippines President Wayne Murray celebrated the launch of Hull 419 by thanking the local shipbuilding team and acknowledging the outstanding capability of the Balamban shipyard – which now includes a 120 metre long assembly bay and multiple new fabrication bays.

“I am exceptionally proud of the entire Austal Philippines team. The launch of Hull 419 from our newly expanded shipyard is a significant event that highlights our capability to deliver multiple projects concurrently – safely and cost effectively,” Mr Murray said.

Fjord Line’s FSTR (Hull 419) is capable of transporting 1,200 passengers at up to 40 knots and features Austal’s largest ever vehicle-carrying capacity constructed to date, with a beam of 30.5 metres enabling 404 cars to be carried across two decks. The ship features several key design innovations that enhance operating performance and passenger comfort, including a new, optimised hull form that will minimise fuel consumption and wake wash when operating on the Skagerrak Sea between Hirtshals, Denmark and Kristiansand, Norway.

Austal to Develop Hydrogen-Powered High-Speed Catamaran for Sweden’s Gotland

Australian shipbuilder Austal has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sweden’s Gotland Company to develop the design of Gotland’s upcoming high-speed catamaran, the “Gotland Horizon X”.

The 130-meter-long catamaran will be able to operate on fossil-free fuels, including hydrogen, and will transport 1,650 passengers and 450 vehicles at speeds of up to 35 knots between the Swedish mainland and the island of Gotland.

Under the agreement, Austal and Gotland will collaborate to design the vessel with a multi-fuel solution that allows it to operate on hydrogen and other fossil-free fuels. Austal’s CEO, Paddy Gregg, said the partnership confirms Austal’s readiness to design a new hydrogen-powered high-speed catamaran, which represents a pathway to achieving net-zero emissions.

Gotland Company’s CEO, Håkan Johansson, said the new high-speed catamaran would be an important step in the company’s climate journey.

“We are working on developing our future ships, and in 2022 we presented the second ship model in our Horizon series: Gotland Horizon X ,” said Johansson. “This high-speed catamaran can operate on hydrogen and other fossil free fuels. The vessel will be a very good addition to the traffic between the Swedish mainland and Gotland. She will be used foremost during the summer months and make the trip to and from Gotland in under three hours.”

The head of Gotland Tech Development, Christer Bruzelius, described Austal as a leading company in the development and production of large catamarans and the perfect partner to continue the development of Gotland Horizon X .

For Austal, the MOU with Gotland is another demonstration of the company’s commitment to designing, building, and sustaining future-ready fast ferries.

Gotland Company plans to have at least one of its previously announced passenger and freight vessels, with a capacity for 1,900 passengers and 600 vehicles, in operation before 2030.

Austal Limited ( Austal ) (ASX:ASB) is pleased to announce it has delivered a second high speed catamaran ferry to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).

catamaran austal

Two High Speed Catamaran Ferries docked at Austal Philippines Shipyard

The  contract  for  two 45 metre catamaran  ferries  was  awarded  in  April  2014  and  valued  at approximately $30 million, with the vessel constructed at Austal’s Philippines shipyard.

Austal Chief Executive Officer Andrew Bellamy said the delivery of the second vessel further reinforces Austal’s position to compete in this growth market.

“As this delivery demonstrates, Austal has the right production cost base in the Philippines to compete for commercial vessel contracts and successfully leverage our intellectual property with a proven design,” Mr Bellamy said.

“The capacity and efficiency of our Philippines shipyard proves we are able to meet market demand for this type of vessel. We continue to pursue further opportunities in the Middle East and the energy sector.”

Austal is also building a 57.6m high speed catamaran crew boat for an undisclosed operator based in S.E Asia, for USD$20 million (approximately $26 million) at its Philippines shipyard.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

catamaran austal

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
