Saba 50, for Performance and Comfort

The SABA 50 was one of the first models, after the Helia 44, to benefit from the latest Fountaine Pajot innovations.

The sailing performance remains a priority for Fountaine Pajot catamarans. Additionally, comfort has greatly improved with many features which are demanded nowadays by long-term sailors.

Accommodation is optimised with spacious and ligh-filled cabins. The saloon is wide and practical, with a convertible sofa area and a convenient galley. The whole boat offers plenty of storage throughout.

Circulation is made easy between the different parts of the boat, allowing crew to get quickly and easily from and to the cockpit, the flybridge, the helm station or the foredeck.

Relaxation areas

The flybdridge communicates directly with the helm station and is quickly accessible from the cockpit. It comfortably welcomes guets with large sofas and sunbeds.

Foredeck cushions and sunbed transform it into a convivial area, as well as pulpits at bow.

The cockpit is in continuation of the saloon, offering a vast and sociable area. The cockpit table can sit up to 8 guests, and there are relaxing sofas on the side and back. A staircase easily leads to the helm and flybdridge, and a cockpit fridge can be fitted below.

Interior design of the Saba 50

The interior design is cosy, with soft colours and elegant style.

Natural light is a major bonus, through roof and panoramic windows in the saloon, a wide window door opening onto the cockpit, large windows in all cabins.

Layouts of the Fountaine Pajot SABA 50

There are 4 different accommodation versions to fit all sailing projects:

  • The Saba 50 Quintet has 6 cabins and 6 bathrooms, ie 3 on each side.
  • The Saba 50 Quintet VIP has 3 cabins with one accessible from the cockpit directly, and 2 starboard.

Fountaine Pajot Saba 50 - 6 Cabin | Boomerang

Saba 50 - 6 Cabin | Catamaran - 2016

The Saba 50 is the net result of 34 years of research, development and refinement of the Fountaine Pajot line of catamarans. Though this may be a totally new design, it began its evolution in the late 1980's as the incredibly popular Bahia 46. Back in the day, the Bahia was the biggest production catamaran available for bareboat charters in the BVI. It also had the largest sleeping capacity of any cat in its size range. In 2007, after about 20 years of success, the model underwent its first growth spurt and was transformed into the Salina 48. In 2014 after a second growth spurt (and a lot of tweaking), the more sophisticated and streamlined Saba 50 was launched; immediately garnering much critical acclaim. It was awarded Sail Magazine's prestigious "best boat award" for 2015 ... and deservedly so. Keeping in mind that this yacht sleeps up to 13 people and recognizing the fact that most sailors spend the majority of their waking hours outdoors, Berret Racoupeau has delivered one of the most sociable yachts available for today's bareboat sailors. Boomerang is the ultimate "party boat" for 6 couples, and she's ideal for families with a gaggle of kids. The moment you step aboard, it becomes immediately evident that every square inch of usable deck space (that hasn't been dedicated to sailing functionality) has been claimed for social purposes, putting otherwise dead space to very good use. What a concept! There are four distinctly separate spaces in which sailors can gather aboard this yacht.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

catamaran saba 50

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

catamaran saba 50

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

catamaran saba 50

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

catamaran saba 50

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

catamaran saba 50

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

catamaran saba 50

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

catamaran saba 50

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

MOSCOW TOPOGRAPHY

Moscow Rings Map

Moscow has developed in circles around the original historical center. Today, Muscovites divide their city into four road rings. The first one, Bulvarnoye Koltso (Boulevard Ring), contains the very center of the city, the Kremlin, as well as the Red Square and some other tourist attractions. The second ring road draws a circle with a diameter of around five kilometers around the Kremlin and covers what is considered the city center. The area is referred to as  Sadovoye koltso , the Garden Ring. The Third Transport Ring ( TTK ) is a high-speed freeway. The fourth ring is enclosed by the Moscow Automobile Ring Road ( MKAD ). The MKAD is the official city boundary, although there are huge areas outside the ring that are also officially part of the city area.

MOSCOW PUBLIC TRANSPORT

catamaran saba 50

In Moscow, the main forms of public transport are metro, bus and trolleybus. The Metro stations are renowned for their elegant and grand decor, and the Metro services are frequent and efficient, but during the daytime stations and trains are usually overcrowded. Choose first or last coaches since they are often less crowded. Passes for one or two trips can be purchased via ticket machines (cash and coins only). Tickets cost about 55 rubles (€0.55) for one journey. Tickets are valid at the Metro, bus, trolleybus, tram and monorail. It is better to purchase multi-ride pass, using it is more profitable.
