Jeff Bezos’ $500M yacht has a 246-foot support ship, Lauren Sanchez figurehead

Much like Amazon, Jeff Bezos’ $500 million superyacht offers every bell and whistle imaginable, from A to Z.

The colossal, triple-masted Koru began its career serving the world’s third richest man this week, cruising the Mediterranean around Mallorca.

The 417-foot schooner first left Rotterdam in the Netherlands for sea trials in February. Dropping anchor in Mallorca put its jaw-dropping size on full display.

It also showed the extent of Bezos’ fleet: Not only did the Koru sail into harbor, so did its support vessel, Abeona, a mega-boat in its own right, the luxurious fast-launches used to move between the two — and aerial support in the form of his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez’s personal helicopter.

Sanchez also seemingly serves the fleet’s mascot, with the Koru’s figurehead, a part of traditional large sailing ships, modeled after her.

The Koru is the world’s tallest sailing yacht. Its three huge 229-foot masts power it to 20 knots. It’s also the biggest billionaire’s yacht which can move under sail-power alone.

The masts are so tall that Dutch officials considered dismantling the 95-year-old Koningshaven Bridge to allow the vessel past the 131-foot span on its journey from the Oceanco shipyard in Alblasserdam through Rotterdam to the North Sea.

That controversial plan was scrapped after local backlash, including residents being urged to toss eggs at Bezos’ “latest toy,”  the New York Times reported . The superyacht, previously known as Y721, was instead towed to a shipyard in Rotterdam, downstream of the bridge, without its masts.

Bezos, 59, and the bikini-clad Sanchez, 53, appeared ready for the summer as the pair soaked up the sun aboard Koru, a Māori word for loop or coil that symbolizes new beginnings — possibly a coy reference to their relationship.

Sanchez started secretly dating the Blue Origin founder in the summer of 2018. Bezos then announced in January 2019 he and his wife Mackenzie were divorcing after 25 years , while Sanchez finalized her split from husband Patrick Whitesell later that year.

Sanchez plays a critical role in the Bezos fleet: As a helicopter pilot, she was seen landing on the Abeona. She was also at Bezos’ side when he took the wheel of the Koru.

Koru was first seen under construction in 2021 at Oceano’s yard. The company is owned by a fellow billionaire, Oman’s Mohammed Al Barwani.

As many as 18 guests can enjoy the yacht’s three outdoor decks, including one with two pools. The vessel, which has a crew of up to 36, also boasts a cinema, meeting spaces and lounges,  Luxuo reported .

Every detail is designed for luxury, even down to the masts’ technology.

Bezos opted for high-tech “in-boom furlers,” which store the vast canvases at the bottom of the mast, above the deck. Each weighs nearly 2,000 pounds, but they allow his deck to be kept clear of ropes.

Clearing ropes out of the way maximizes entertaining space, and allows for a hot tub forward of the mainmast.

The yacht is also built for speed. Its three masts provide “one of the largest sail areas ever seen in yachting,”  according to SuperYacht Times .

The Koru’s original designer, and the identity of its captain, remain secret. Boat International noted : “With the elegant curve of the bow and a bowsprit, the lines are certainly classic, but we still have no idea which designer drew them.”

The Cayman Islands-flagged vessel also has engine power like most sailing yachts.

And while other billionaires measure yachts by size, Bezos’ is only the 24th largest.

However, since Koru’s masts rule out a helicopter deck, the billionaire commissioned a support vessel, Abeona, named for the Roman goddess of outward journeys.

In addition to a helipad, the 246-foot Abeona features an extra two staterooms for four guests and as many as 45 crew and support staff.

It’s the largest custom-built support vessel ever manufactured by Damen Yachting. On board in Mallorca were at least four jetskis, two fast launches, and an additional dinghy. Its heavy winch is capable of lifting a small submarine, although Bezos is not believed to have one thus far.

The “classic exterior lines” of Koru, are reminiscent of another billionaire’s boat: Eos, a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller, 81, who may have inspired Bezos after hosting him on the vessel.

Favored by megastars like Katy Perry and Bradley Cooper — who were Diller’s guests during 2019’s Google Camp in Sicily — the German-built Eos can accommodate up to 16 guests and 21 crew.

It was the largest private sailing yacht in the world when it was completed in 2006. Diller, chairman of IAC and Expedia, who is worth $3.9 billion, bought it three years later. Intriguingly, its figurehead is modeled on Diller’s wife Diane von Fürstenberg, the fashion designer.

But the $200 million, 305-foot schooner is now dwarfed by Bezos’ boat.

As Koru sailed in the Balearic Sea this week off the coast of Spain, Bezos’ boat symbolically surges past several other tech billionaires’ vessels – including Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s $80 million, 240-foot Dragonfly, and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison’s, $160 million, 288-foot Musashi.

It will cost Bezos, 59, an estimated $25 million per year to operate Koru, but the world’s third-richest man isn’t likely to need a loan with his $140.6 billion fortune,  according to Forbes .

Bezos’ use of sailpower sets him apart from most billionaires, but others are seeking a hi-tech zero-carbon power source: a Japanese billionaire has reportedly commissioned the world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht.

Germany’s Lürssen Yachts announced in March that they had a hydrogen-powered superyacht in advanced construction.

It declined to identify the future owner of the unnamed superyacht, but specialist publication FuelCellsWorks reported Japanese billionaire tech Yusaku Maezawa, worth an estimated $1.7 billion, commissioned the innovative effort.

Dubbed Project Cosmos, the 374-foot superyacht is designed by Apple’s legendary Marc Newson and was first unveiled in early March at Lürssen’s facility in Rendsburg, Germany.

Once completed as soon as next year, the vessel is expected to utilize emission-free fuel cell technology to generate power lasting up to 15 days while anchored or to travel as far as 1,000 miles at slow speeds.

Three other major shipyards, including in Italy and the Netherlands, are likely to launch their own hydrogen started outfitting newly constructed vessels with hydrogen fuel cells as of March 2022, with the first models reportedly expected in 2024.

Other megayachts expected to soon join Bezos’ Koru in the water include two Lürssen models, the 475-foot Luminance and the 400-foot Jag, and Feadship 821, a 389-foot offering from the Netherlands manufacturer.

But even those won’t best the biggest megayacht in the world, the 593-foot Azzam, which launched in 2013 after being commissioned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates who died last year.

Azzam, which means determination in Arabic, reportedly cost more than $600 million and is nearly 60 feet longer than the world’s second-largest yacht, the 533-foot Eclipse, owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Those monster vessels are expected to be surpassed next year by REV, a 600-foot yacht under construction in Norway which will have space for 36 guests and 54 crewmembers, according to Boat International .

Does Jeff Bezos's New Yacht Feature a Sculpture of Lauren Sánchez?

The world's largest sailing yacht appears to have a figurehead that resembles Sánchez.

The yacht, which is named "Koru" and reportedly cost around $500 million, features a wooden figurehead of a woman that seems to be based on Sánchez. In addition, the sculpture is wearing the symbol for Koru, which is Māori for "loop or coil" and represents creation.

Per the Encyclopedia of New Zealand , "The koru, which is often used in Māori art as a symbol of creation, is based on the shape of an unfurling fern frond. Its circular shape conveys the idea of perpetual movement, and its inward coil suggests a return to the point of origin. The koru therefore symbolises the way in which life both changes and stays the same."

Bezos has previously posted about the symbol of koru, including a photo in his New Year's Day post in 2022, where he wrote, "the new year is also a great time to take stock and focus on personal growth, renewal, rebirth, and paying careful attention to each moment of your life. Bezos and Sánchez have been spotted this week on the three-mast yacht off the coast of Spain. At 417 feet, it is the largest sailing yacht in the world, and it is trailed by a 246-foot support vessel called the Abeona.

Bezos and his first wife, MacKenzie Bezos , divorced in April 2019 , and he has been publicly dating Sánchez since that same year.

Did Jeff Bezos Put His Girlfriend on the Bow of His Superyacht?

Jeff Bezos’s 417-foot, $500 million new superyacht has finally taken to the seas . Bezos and girlfriend Lauren Sánchez were photographed this week enjoying the boat, the Koru , off the coast of Spain: They tanned and pointed at things; they removed their white cover-ups and then put their white coverups back on.

The boat, a schooner (a “refreshing” choice among yacht traditionalists, per the New York Times ), also features a striking figurehead on its bow. It has long hair and breasts. A glimpse of a hoop earring. No feet. Is it Sánchez?

People is bullish : “Jeff Bezos’ $500 Million Yacht Has a Sculpture of Lauren Sánchez — With a Hidden Reference to ‘New Beginnings.’”

TMZ errs speculative: “Superyacht’s Figurehead … WOODEN REPLICA OF LAUREN?!?”

Even the Times couldn’t resist, with a demure little nod in an otherwise dry explainer to “a  voluptuous mermaid  on the bow” that “bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez.”

There’s something very girlfriend-respecting about putting a shirt on your figurehead, but the mystery remains.

Oceanco's 127 metre sailing yacht known as Y721 , rumoured to be Jeff Bezos's in-build superyacht, emerged from the shed for the first time this week. BOAT rounds up the best pictures of the project, which will become the largest sailing yacht in the world when delivered in 2022.

Emerging from the shed

The sailing yacht was glimpsed for the very first time earlier this month after rolling out of the sheds at Oceanco's Zwijndrecht shipyard. The record-breaking black-hulled superyacht is set to feature three masts and a bowsprit.

The scale of the project can be seen in this image against the shipyard workers watching the yacht emerge. While the designers of the project remain a secret, it is known that the yacht is built from aluminium and steel.

Prior to being revealed in October, the hull of the yacht was built in pieces at Oceanco's Zwijnenburg facility before being assembled in Zwijndrecht.

The bow and superstructure of the sailing yacht are clearly seen in this image. While the sale of the yacht was first reported in 2018, no other details about the project have been released until now. The yacht will be the largest yacht ever built at Oceanco.

The striking black shine of the hull is seen from below in this image. A new book published this year appeared to confirm long-standing rumours that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is the owner of this secretive 127-metre sailing yacht. An excerpt of the book, named Amazon Unbound , was published by Bloomberg and describes the superyacht as “one of the finest sailing yachts in existence,” with "several decks" and "three enormous masts."

The teak decks of the superyacht can be seen from above in this image. Amazon Unbound also reported that an accompanying support boat is also under construction, though the details of this remain unknown.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos's new yacht Koru is the talk of the town these days, days after he and his partner Lauren Sanchez were spotted soaking up the sun off the coast of Spain. At 417 feet, ‘Koru’ is said to be the world's largest sailing yacht costing $500 million ( ₹ 4,145 crore), and has numerous features which makes the stay a royal experience. Here are five important things to know about this super luxurious possession of Bezos. 1. The name ‘Koru’ is actually a Maori (indigenous people of New Zealand) term for a coil or a loop which symbolises new life, growth and peace. In fact, the Amazon founder had included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post last year. 2. Talking about the design, Koru is a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a mermaid-like structure on the bow, bearing resemblance to Bezos' partner Lauren Sanchez, New York Times reported.

3. This sailing yacht will be trailed by a 246-foot support vessel Abeona. This vessel is for carrying ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats etc. It can carry them along with dozens of crew members. It has three huge 229-foot masts which power it to a speed of 20 knots.

4. Koru had triggered a controversy last year. It was built at Oceanco's facility in Alblasserdam in Netherlands and needed to pass the Koningshaven Bridge to undergo testing. When the local administration announced it would dismantle the bridge for the boat and mainmast, the locals had protested. However, the bridge was not dismantled and yacht took a different route.

5. It has numerous features like a large pool on the aft deck, seating area on the bowsprit and areas for relaxing across the open decks, Boat International reported. However, another website Luxuo reported that the superyacht also features a movie theatre, several lounges and several business areas.

Alive Girl Spotted at Sea

Jeff Bezos has added a bit of stunning new woodwork to his superyacht: The prow is now decorated with, as the Daily Mail put it, a “curvaceous winged GODDESS,” which bears a striking resemblance to Lauren Sanchez, Bezos’s girlfriend.

Bezos and Sanchez were seen lounging on the 400-foot yacht off the coast of Spain earlier this week , and the addition of a gleaming Alive Girl figurehead suggests that the ship is finally finished. The world’s largest sailing yacht has been under construction for some time — apparently it was being remodeled to house a swimming pool, a helipad, and room for a second, smaller yacht . Last year, it was nearly vandalized by a bunch of egg-wielding Rotterdam citizens when they heard one of their important bridges would have to be disassembled to make way for the yacht’s movements.

A nautical bust is not a practical accessory, but more of a spiritual symbol — an embodiment of a ship’s vibe. Traditionally, a figurehead would be a mermaid, a fierce animal, or maybe a Valkyrie to suggest protection. I feel that Sanchez, an enthusiastic helicopter pilot who is scheduled to go to space next year , seems more than appropriate for the job. Ahoy, Alive Girl.

Begin mei kwam het naar buiten dat de Nederlandse werf Oceanco uit Alblasserdam aan een nieuw project zou werken. Geruchten gingen door het rondte dat Amazon-oprichter Jeff Bezos de opdrachtgever zou zijn. De op één na rijkste man ter wereld heeft op het moment van schrijven een vermogen van $ 193 miljard, dus een jacht van honderden miljoentjes is voor hem geen enkel probleem. Deze week ging het schip op transport en dat trok uiteraard de aandacht van fotografen.

Jeff Bezos klopt aan bij Nederlandse scheepswerf Oceanco

Het gevaarte van 127 meter lang krijgt het modelnummer Y721 en is zowel het langste jacht dat ooit in Nederland is gebouwd en als het grootste superjacht ooit gebouwd bij Oceanco. Binnenkort zal het jacht worden overgebracht worden naar een andere faciliteit voor afbouw werkzaamheden.

Y721 mag dan wel het grootste Nederlandse zeiljacht ooit zijn, bij aflevering, gepland voor 2022, zal het schip wereldwijd gezien qua grootte genoegen moeten nemen met plek. Sailing Yacht A van de Russische miljardair Andrey Melnichenko, gebouwd door het Duitse Norbiskrug, blijft met een lengte van 142.81 meter de onbetwiste koning van de zeven zeeën. Oceanco’s 106,7 meter lange Black Pearl , waar we laatst met veel lof over spraken, concurreert goed mee met plaats drie en is het op twee na grootste zeiljacht gebouwd door Oceanco.

Nadat Y721 gedeeltelijk werd opgebouwd in Zwijnenburg, werd het schip verplaats naar de door Oceanco nieuw aangeschafte werf in Zwijndrecht. Veel details zijn nog ongewis, maar zeker is dat Y721 van drie masten, drie dekken en een boegspriet voorzien zal worden.

“Een van de mooiste zeiljachten die er bestaat”

In het boek  Amazon Unbound van Brad Stone, waarvan een uittreksel werd gepubliceerd door Bloomberg, wordt het superjacht beschreven als “een van de mooiste zeiljachten die er bestaat”, met “verschillende dekken” en “drie enorme masten”. In het boek wordt ook gemeld dat ook een begeleidende ondersteuningsboot in aanbouw is, met een helikopterplatform. Wel zo leuk voor zijn vriendin Lauren Sanchez, die naast journalist ook helikopterpiloot is.

Ondanks dat diverse bronnen claimen dat het inderdaad Jeff Bezos is geweest die de aanvraag heeft ingediend, biedt Oceanco nog altijd geen verheldering. “Oceanco waardeert de privacy en vertrouwelijkheid van al onze klanten en potentiële klanten en geeft daarom geen commentaar op onze betrokkenheid of niet-betrokkenheid bij specifieke projecten,” aldus een woordvoerder van de werf uit.

'Jeff Bezos bouwt 's werelds grootste zeiljacht in Nederland'

Het geheimzinnige jacht van 127 meter lengte dat momenteel bij Oceanco in Alblasserdam gebouwd wordt is voor 's werelds rijkste man, Jeff Bezos. Dat beweert althans Brad Stone, de schrijver van Amazon Unbound, een boek dat over Bezos en zijn bedrijf Amazon gaat.

Project Y721, dat momenteel in aanbouw is bij Oceanco in Alblasserdam, op het punt waar de rivier de Noord en de A15 elkaar kruisen, is met geheimzinnigheid omhuld. Hoewel super- en megajachten normaal gesproken al met stijf gesloten kaken te maken hebben, is in dit geval de stilte nog doordringender. Oceanco vertelt helemaal niets over het project.

Het enige dat bekend is over het nieuwe superjacht is dat het een zeilschip wordt van 127 meter. Dankzij die lengte wordt het meteen het grootste megazeiljacht ter wereld. De Black Pearl , eveneens gebouwd bij Oceanco, verplaatst naar de tweede plek op de ranglijst van wie heeft de langste.

In het boek Amazon Unbound zegt de auteur dat het jacht gebouwd wordt voor Jeff Bezos. De overige details die naar voren komen zijn dat het " one of the finest sailing yachts in existence, [wordt]" met " several decks" en " three enormous masts ". In tegenstelling tot de Black Pearl wordt de Y721 een schoener.

Volgens de schrijver is intussen ook een ' support ship ' voor het jacht in aanbouw. Of dat jacht dan ook bij Oceanco wordt gebouwd is niet meteen duidelijk.

Jeff Bezos’ luxury superyacht has pulled into Cannes for its famed film festival.

But while the new $500 million vessel, Koru, has been making headlines as the world’s largest sailing yacht — and for featuring a mermaid on its prow that looks like his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez — its not the only boat in town.

Bezos’ support yacht, Abeona, is also in the Riviera town’s port.

The 246-foot vessel carries crew as well as what the New York Times described as “toys,” including “ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip.”

Also in the area is the $70 million yacht, Artisan, owned by venture capitalist Todd Chafree, who invested in Netflix, Kayak and Twitter.

Billionaire British entrepreneur Brett Alexander Palos’ $45 million boat, Illusion, has also been spotted in the port.

Palos is the stepson of Topshop bigwig Sir Phillip Green.

The $70 million yacht, Siren, has also been seen off Cannes.

The 241-footer is own by David Reuben, a member of the reportedly second wealthiest family in the UK. Forbes estimates his worth at $6.7 billion.

Noticeably absent this year are the yachts of Russian oligarchs .

Away from Bezos’ big boat, the Amazon billionaire and Sanchez were spotted in Cannes at a magazine party at the fancy Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc over the weekend, and at a private mansion party for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

While Bezos walked the blue carpet in a marble-esque blazer, Sánchez stood out in a sparkling black-and-red gown.

Her dress had long sleeves made from polka-dot mesh, a plunging neckline that reached her navel, and a thigh-high slit. The daring gown also had an all-over geometric print that sparkled in the light.

The couple opted for classic glam at the 2021 Baby2Baby 10-Year Gala.

Bezos attended in a traditional tuxedo with thick lapels, a white button-up shirt, and a black bow tie.

Sánchez mirrored him in a black mermaid-style gown. It had thin straps, a ruffled lace neckline, and a matching black band around the waist. She accessorized with a diamond cuff on her wrist.

Their summer style has included light-colored gowns and simple suits.

At the 2022 premiere of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," for example, Bezos sported a gray suit comprised of a sharp blazer, pleated trousers, and a lighter-toned undershirt.

Sánchez kept things even simpler in a white asymmetrical gown from Tom Ford. The body-hugging piece had a single shoulder strap, a fitted waistline, and a skirt slit that revealed her gold sandals.

Bezos and Sánchez dazzled at another "Lord of the Rings" premiere in black and red.

Bezos posed for photographers in a black suit, which he wore with a white undershirt and satin tie.

Sánchez took the opposite approach with her outfit, wearing a vibrant red gown covered in tiny sparkles. She also wore silver sandals and a diamond bracelet.

They amped up their style for a Versace fashion show in 2023.

Sánchez showed the edgy side of her style in a minidress from the Italian designer. Its black fabric sparkled as she moved, and black belts crisscrossed over the garment.

She wore it with semi-sheer tights and pointed pumps.

Bezos, on the other hand, swapped his usual tuxedos for a sleeker suit. He wore a dark T-shirt underneath a lighter jacket and completed the outfit with shining dress shoes.

Sánchez and Bezos coordinated in black outfits again at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party in March 2023.

Sánchez's Elie Saab gown had off-the-shoulder sleeves that created a plunging V-neckline. The form-fitting bodice was actually a bodysuit, and a semi-sheer skirt with strips of sparkly black fabric sat atop it.

Bezos kept his look simple in a black tuxedo.

The couple put a summery spin on red-carpet attire at the TIAH anniversary soirée in August 2023.

Bezos wore multiple neutral shades for the event, pairing a pale gray shirt with a taupe jacket, white pants, and taupe shoes.

In contrast, Sánchez wore a form-fitting red gown with embellished spaghetti straps and clear heels.

Sánchez and Bezos wore all-black looks to a Staud fashion show in September 2023.

Sánchez's sparkly minidress from Staud, which had a slit on one side, had a celestial theme, as it was adorned with constellations. She accessorized with silver shoes and jewelry.

Bezos paired his short-sleeve black T-shirt and pants with a chic vest.

Both had fun with texture when they attended a Dolce & Gabbana party in Milan in January 2024.

The couple embraced the mob wife trend for the Dolce & Gabbana party, wearing coordinating looks from the designer. Bezos wore black-on-black with a velvet suit and a black button-down, which he wore with no tie.

Sánchez's dress was more daring, as the figure-hugging gown had a corset bodice and was made entirely of sheer black lace. She wore a blazer jacket with a black rosette on her shoulders, open-toe shoes, and oversize sunglasses.

The couple looked effortlessly chic at a Chanel pre-Oscars dinner in March 2024.

Bezos wore a charcoal suit to the dinner, which he dressed down with a black T-shirt and black shoes.

Sánchez chose a long-sleeve, black dress for the event. The garment hit her at the ankle, showing off black heels, and had a plunging neckline. A choker completed her look.

Jeff Bezos’ Giant Yacht Is Apparently Too Big to Anchor Near Others in Florida

The superyacht, called Koru, arrived in Port Everglades in Florida on Nov. 22, and has been docked near a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State.

First, Jeff Bezos’ new megayacht was too big to pass under a bridge in the Netherlands. Now, the massive vessel’s size — it’s more than 400 feet long — has played a role in preventing it from keeping company with other private yachts in Port Everglades, Fla., where it is anchored.

Instead, the megayacht, named Koru, is hanging with huge oil tankers and general container ships. The yacht is docked there because of its size and also because of what berths were available in the seaport, according to a spokeswoman for Port Everglades.

Koru is a sailing yacht, unlike the much bigger diesel-powered boats popular with other billionaires. It is the largest sailing yacht in the world, according to Oceanco , the Dutch company that finished building the boat earlier this year.

The deck space of the three-masted schooner has three Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. The inside has a “timeless, contemporary style,” according to Oceanco, with natural wood tones, warm neutrals, and patterned textiles. It also includes a mermaid on the bow that appears to resemble Mr. Bezos’ partner, Lauren Sánchez.

Koru, which Bloomberg estimated cost about $500 million to build, arrived to the Florida port on Nov. 22 after departing from Gibraltar earlier this month, according to Marine Traffic , a real-time maritime data platform.

It was unclear why exactly Mr. Bezos docked his yacht there, but earlier this month he said that he would be moving back to Miami to be closer to his parents and to Ms. Sánchez.

Mr. Bezos had since 1994 lived in Seattle , where he started Amazon from his garage. He has already purchased two mansions in South Florida, one for $68 million and another for $79 million, according to Bloomberg News .

Bloomberg estimated his net worth to be $171 billion.

Port Everglades charges yachts larger than 400 feet at least $309.50 per 24 hours. Ships that have been closest to Koru include a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State .

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and has come to symbolize new life, growth, and peace in traditional Maori art.

Mr. Bezos’ journey with his new yacht started off rocky . Last year, city officials in Rotterdam, the Dutch city, initially agreed to dismantle De Hef, a 95-year-old bridge, so that Koru could pass through it from the nearby city where it had been built. The dismantling process would have taken more than a day, and putting it back together would have too. But after uproar from the community — including calls to throw eggs at the boat as it would have passed — Oceanco decided against it and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Given that Mark Zuckerberg enjoys a respectable 16th place on a list of the world’s richest people, he probably figured it was time for him to acquire one of the ultimate status symbols for the mega-wealthy — a super yacht.

A new report from The Sun said that Zuckerberg is now the proud owner of a $300 million vessel that he has christened “Launchpad.” The 387-foot-long vessel, which comes with a helipad and a $30 million companion boat, was seen docked this week at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with its unique chrome finish reflecting in the sun.

This purchase shows, among other things, that the Facebook and Meta founder and CEO has branched out from buying islands and building an underground complex to help him survive the apocalypse. Perhaps, he wants to cruise the Mediterranean this summer and be among the moguls who can play host to Leonardo DiCaprio.

The yacht definitely grants him admission to the watery playgrounds of such multibillionaires as Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates and any of the Russian oligarchs who haven’t been the target of sanctions imposed by the United States or its allies over Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

In fact, Zuckerberg reportedly came by Launchpad due to the misfortunes of one of those oligarchs. The yacht originally was commissioned to be built by Vladimir Potanin, one of Russia’s richest men who is on multiple sanctions list, according to a report by Autoevolution.com , a transportation industry site. The yacht was known as Project 1010, and the shipbuilder in the Netherlands was legally barred from delivering it to Potanin when it was completed in 2022, though Autoevolution also said that Potanin was not the yacht’s actual owner.

The Sun reported that the yacht recently received “special permission” to be imported. It has since arrived in the United States, a couple months ahead of Zuckerberg’s 40th birthday on May 14 — which raises the question of whether he meant Launchpad as a birthday gift to himself.

It’s quite a gift: Launchpad can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard. It also requires a crew of 48 and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com . But shelling out $30 million for maintenance a year shouldn’t be a problem for Zuckerberg, who reportedly earns between $6 million and $12 million a day, The Sun said.

But as spectacular as Launchpad sounds, super yacht fans might say it’s not as spectacular as Jeff Bezos’s super yacht, Koru. The $500 million sailing vessel features very tall masts, a swimming pool, a helipad and room for a second, smaller yacht. The most noteworthy thing about Koru is that Bezos commissioned a special sculpture to decorate its prow. It’s a “curvaceous winged goddess” that is said to bear a striking resemblance to his fiancee Lauren Sanchez.

The Amazon founder, his wife-to-be and the goddess figurehead spent much of last summer sailing around the Mediterranean, cruising from Spain to Croatia and hosting such famous guests as Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Usher. The couple also threw a lavish engagement party off the coast of Positano on Italy’s Amalfi coast, attended by another pack of famous friends, including Kris Jenner, Wendi Murdoch and, yes, Leonardo DiCaprio.
