5 of the best Yacht Insurance Companies

While yachting is meant to be all about escaping the humdrum aspects of life, to enjoy the experience with full peace of mind it’s a wise idea to get your trip – and your vessel – insured.

From brokers to charterers to concierge, most operators in the yacht world are focused on one thing and one thing only: selling yachting as an enticing lifestyle choice that you can’t do without. But behind this glossy idyll, the comparatively prosaic requirement of choosing an insurance policy that protects yacht owners and charterers from unforeseen events looms large. We’ve picked out 5 of the best yacht insurance companies currently on the market.

Pantaenius has been providing insurance across a number of sectors dating back to 1899, and for the yacht industry since 1977. Today the company is widely considered one of the leading insurance specialists on the yacht market in Europe and globally thanks to their tailor-made solutions developed by skippers, for skippers, and designed to eliminate all of the worry and stress from the cruising experience. As well as their standard coverage options such as hull insurance, personal accident insurance and crew medical insurance, they also offer a unique online solution, which allows vessel owners to choose their own cover according to the modular principle and manage contracts easily online.

A family-run business with offices around the world, Lockton offer fully comprehensive coverage for vessels of all sizes. Robert Hurlow

We have been cruising across the N Pacific for the past 3 years, out of Seattle. We have a 20 yo custom steel 50 ft cutter made to very high standards in New Zealand. When we left it was understood we would be leaving our boat in several ports along the way to return home at times. When we left we had a policy at about 1.5% of value. A week before it was to renew, we were dropped by the carrier. After scrambling we ended up with a new policy at 3 % of value. This year ( November) we tried to get ahead of the renewal. Our agent in California spent a fretful week looking for a secondary broker, eventually landing us with a broker in Serbia, then of course to Lloyds. Now we are at 3.5 %. We were told that this year the offshore broker market is getting even tighter. Now in Japan we are planning to leave our boat in a very good marina. I am not looking forward to the next renewal cycle. Just some info for those headed out!

John Harries

Thanks for the very complete report. Not a lot to say, except to commiserate. The big take away for me is the lack of any sort of ethics on the part of the carrier that dropped you on such short notice. A very disturbing trend.

Ken Ferrari

Wait… you mentioned your “new boat” twice. Did I miss something? What did you get?

TBA, hopefully later in. the week.

I look forward to hearing the rundown.

For what it’s worth on the insurance series… I’m trying to renew our policy right now. Our boat is in Lisbon, Portugal after having crossed the Atlantic in 2019 (after cruising the US east coast, the Bahamas and the eastern Caribbean for several years). Our current insurance company is ghosting us about the renewal – incommunicado, as it were. We began working with the Gowrie Group on a Jackline policy. A few months of communication, in fact. We only needed to complete an insurance survey once allowed back into Portugal. They even asked for our surveyor’s credentials and resume… which he spent some time putting together. I received an email last week from the broker notifying me that they’ve changed their mind because our hull value is less than $100k. We have a 1981 Morgan 382. Not sure what we’ll do now. We may end up with a liability only policy. And we’re simply looking for coastal cruising insurance while in the Med for a few years. Frustrating for sure.

Ernest E Vogelsinger

Hi Ken, contact Pantaenius, I’m sure they will work something out.

I think Ken is US flagged/resident, in which case Pantaenius won’t even talk to him.

John is correct. Pantaenius told me to get lost several years ago.

Putting you through all that only to say no is, as the Brits would say, a very poor show, as is the other company ghosting you. I have had some of the same sort of experiences. Seems like many members of the insurance industry are just not professional any more.

Matt Marsh

I’ve seen a worrying number of lapses of ethics and professionalism throughout the insurance industry recently. The “we want to put a 3rd-party’s GPS tracker on your car and we can’t tell you how it works or how its data is used” trend is perhaps the most egregious recent example. What you’ve seen with these marine insurers is another. Much of the blame must land on the companies themselves, of course. But some of it can certainly be assigned to business schools that have, for decades, been treating ethics as an afterthought for compliance purposes, and churn out armies of manager drones who can’t see the people behind the numbers. Plus, there’s a lot of Dunning-Kruger Effect and Peter Principle in play; the company needs to keep going, so it puts the people it can find in the roles it needs to fill whether they truly understand the situation or not, and a lot of them end up thinking they’re doing a great job managing the business when they simply don’t know how to make decisions and are just coasting along on top of the corporate policy handbooks. Insurance isn’t a sexy business. It takes a certain, rare kind of mindset to do a really good job of managing it, and most of the people with that mindset aren’t interested in this kind of work. Sometimes you have to skip over a lot of brokers and agents before you find one who really knows their stuff.

I could not have said it as well myself! Mind you I do get quite eloquent, and noisy, about the way MBAs are taught to look at the world by today’s B-schools. The focus on share holder value above all else is at the root of many of the world’s problems, and it’s not even a good long term business strategy. One of my favourite rants.

Peter Herrman

If this is too far off topic, feel free to delete. But your comment about liability made me wonder if it makes sense to have ownership of the boat in an LLC, or similar, to avoid someone going after all your assets should it get ugly?

Sure it’s an option, but do keep in mind that the boat being in an LLC will not stop an insurance company going after you personally as master in command and bypassing the company structure. The other thing to keep in mind is that running a corporation is a hell of a lot of work in filings and compliance. AAC is a corporation for obvious reasons but the regulatory load is huge both in time and money, and gets worse every year, even for such a small entity.

To leave some numbers here – Pantaenius insures my 20-year old steel boat for damage at 1.1% of the taxed value with EUR 1.5k deductible (hull value is EUR 40k). General policy is new for old w/o deductions, up to the insured value. Salvage would have no deductible and no limit. Agreed sailing area at the moment is the complete Med (don’t know if that can be viewed as “offshore”, probably not). Liability is EUR 10mio, at EUR 69.88.

At least I believe this is a fair deal…

Insurance for Cruising Boats

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ OUR DISCLOSURE FOR MORE INFO.

Last Updated on December 1, 2021 by Amy

We frequently get asked about how insurance works out here.  How do we insure our boat? What restrictions do you have on your boat insurance? My boat insurance policy is going up 200%, help me!

When we moved aboard Starry Horizons, we wanted to sail the boat across the Atlantic with just the two of us. Most insurances were not willing to insure us for the Atlantic crossing.  We did a ton of research and eventually settled on Pantaenius .

It is important to note that we had thorough credentials for coastal sailing: USCG 100Ton Master’s licenses near coastal with a sailing endorsement, two bareboat Caribbean charters, and months of sailing experience on our 30′ catamaran.  However, insurances were interested to know if either of us had offshore sailing experience – which we didn’t.

Our dealer helped us find an insurance broker named Brown & Brown who shopped around for us and got a few quotes.  We honestly don’t remember how using a broker went.  It certainly expedited getting initial quotes from various companies, but we had specific questions regarding coverage and often ended up communicating directly with the insurance company.

Table of Contents - Click to Jump

With our credentials, Pantaenius was willing to cover us for the start of our voyage – crossing the Atlantic with just two people onboard.

Costs of Insurance

The cost of your insurance is going to vary greatly on your amount of coverage.  Our first policy with Pantaenius had a Hull Premium that was .6% of our Agreed Fixed Value Limit.

Coverage Area

Our Pantaenius policy covered us for the following cruising area:

Canadian and United States Atlantic coast and inland waters, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, north to 52° North Latitude, east to 50° West Longitude, and south to 7° North Latitude. Waters of Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, and the Panama Canal are excluded. It is warranted that the vessel is not south of 30.5 degrees in the Atlantic Ocean, inland waters, in the Caribbean Sea or in the Gulf of Mexico between July 15th and November 1st.

This gave us a cruising ground from Newfoundland to Guyana during the cruising season, and from the Florida-Georgia border north to Newfoundland during hurricane season.

Why We Left Pantaenius

As we were nearing our Panama Canal Transit, we needed to adjust our policy for our 2016 cruising: transit the canal, cross the Pacific, and cruise through the South Pacific to New Zealand before the start of cyclone season.  We contacted our agent at Pantaenius and received a quote to cover this area – at an increase of 284%.  This new policy did not have an exclusion zone, meaning they did not require us to be anywhere specific for cyclone season.  That also meant that we would be paying significantly more despite taking precautions to be in a low-risk zone.

This gets a bit confusing; Gowrie is the parent company for International Marine Insurance Services, and Markel American Insurance Company is the underwriter for a policy called Jackline.

Our new policy with Jackline had a Hull Premium that was 1.4% of our Agreed Fixed Value Limit.   Our premium increased 108% over the Pantaenius policy in the Atlantic, but the Jackline policy for the Pacific was nearly half of Pantaenius’ policy.

Jackline is a worldwide policy covering all the oceans, but it does have restrictions.  We are not allowed to visit some countries (like Cuba and the Philippines) and Africa and Asia are mostly off limits (with some exceptions).  We can not go further than 61.5° N or 50° S (I guess Iceland is off the itinerary).

Furthermore, the Jackline Policy has defined Tropical Storm Zones:

The northern tropical storm zone is comprised of the waters and territories located:  between 010°50′ and 031°00′ North latitude and between 030°00′ and 100°00′ West longitude,  between 008°00′ and 027°00′ North latitude and between 090°00′ and 180°00′ West longitude and  between 008°00′ and 045°00′ North latitude and between 060°00′ and 180°00′ East longitude. The southern tropical storm zone is comprised of the waters and territories located:  between 008°00′ and 026°30′ South latitude and between 090°00′ and 180°00′ East longitude,  between 008°00′ and 026°30′ South latitude and between 120°00′ and 180°00′ West longitude and  between 008°00′ and 035°00′ South latitude and between 025°00′ and 090°00′ East longitude.

Exclusions:

3.1.3 Occurrences caused by or contributed to by tropical storms while the Vessel is in the northern tropical storm zone between and including the first day of July and the 15th day of November unless the Vessel is in the territory or territorial waters of Hawaii. 3.1.4 Occurrences caused by or contributed to by tropical storms while the Vessel is in the southern tropical storm zone between and including the first day of December and the last day of March.

It helps to map these out for yourself.

Insurance Requirements Around the World

Many marinas have asked us for copies of our Jackline policy.   We’ve never had one come back to us and say that our insurance doesn’t meet their requirements.  However, I suspect they don’t actually review the policy.  Instead, they often have specific requirements in the docking agreement.  Here’s a quote from one marina:

All boats must be insured and carry a public liability for at least $10,000,000. Evidence of insurance must be produced when requested by the Marina Manager.

Our public liability is only $1,000,000.  Staying at a marina that requires a higher public liability than you have is something the owners should decide if they are willing to risk the consequences if something goes wrong.  When I asked our agent about increasing our public liability insurance, she said the premium increases $750 per million dollars of coverage.  Yikes!

I do know that in Opua, New Zealand, there was an insurance company in the marina complex that offered temporary public liability insurance to meet the requirements of the marina.  That might be a cheaper option.

Also, when applying for a permit to visit the British Indian Ocean Territory of Chagos, we were required to submit proof of insurance that covered “wreck recovery, clean up and removal”.  Our policy had that covered.

Is Our Insurance Good?

We’ve never filed a claim on our boat insurance.  We certainly think that both Jackline and Pantaenius are reputable companies, but there just aren’t a lot of choices available.  If we ever have an issue with the boat and do have to file a claim, I’ll be sure to write about it!

Damn. 6%? That’s much more painful than I’ve been led to believe.

It says .6%, thats 0.6%.

We were insured by Dual from Malta to Santa Marta Columbia… we had ASA certifications, 12 years of power boating, and a couple of bare boat charters in the BVI…

We had two crew from Las Palmas to Barbados, but outside of that it was just the two of us.

Our broker told us that Dual was not going to insure us the following year from Columbia to French Polynesia… so he got us insured through Global Yacht Cover… When we tried to renew while in French Polynesia, he told us that Global Yacht Cover (GYC) would not renew our policy… at that point we changed brokers, and moved to Gowrie who did get us covered through GYC (note we spent cyclone season back in the Marquesas even though they would have insured us in Tahiti)… We pay about 1.3% agreed upon value, 10% deductible for named storms…

We asked if we would get a discount for sailing back to the Marquesas, which have never had a cyclone, and they chuckled…

We know of two boats, a 48 Leopard and a 50 FP were quoted $18000-$22000 for a year in the South Pacific…

Want to make a claim on your policy?

Frequently asked questions.

Our standard policy allows you to take part in any race or regatta, but does not cover for the rig unless it is damaged by collision, stranding, sinking or fire. The hull is covered, but with double excess during racing.

Your claim will be assessed on the basis of the ‘agreed value’ – the insured value stated on your policy schedule at that given time and in accordance with the terms of your policy.

Contact us  as soon as possible to inform us of any changes. We’re happy to accommodate changes at any time during your year, whether that be changing contact details or an aspect of your policy.

We don’t offer no claims bonus on any policy where the insured value exceeds £200,000 and/or where the boat is spending the majority of the policy period outside the boundary of UK and European waters.

Because we’re committed to offering the best personal service and tailored terms, we don’t believe in automatic renewals. Instead, we’ll offer you a renewal quote about a month before your policy is due to expire, and ask you whether there have been any changes to your requirements.

It seems ironic, but one of the most important things you can buy for your boat—which is made to take on the elements—is a boat cover to protect it from those same elements. The bottom line is that no matter how much you intend to use it, your boat will be sitting still and alone more than it’s occupied. Suppose you’re fortunate enough to have a garage, barn, or other building to house your boat. In that case, the rain, sun, and wind that otherwise wreak havoc on finishes and components may be kept at bay temporarily, but what about when you’re docked in a slip, staying at a hotel, or your marine technician for service?

Keeping the boat covered is often the best way to maintain its longevity and integrity. That starts with preventing oxidation and the intrusion of moisture, but there are far more considerations than just the weather: When trailering down a dirt road or through a construction site, an uncovered boat can fill up with all sorts of hard-to-remove particles. At a rest stop or motel, a cover won’t stop a thief or other ne’er-do-well from checking things out, but it might serve as at least a slight deterrent.

A friend of mine once left his boat at a marine dealer for an extended period for repairs—while it was safe inside the shop’s locked yard, and he kept the boat covered, he didn’t count on a battalion of feral cats working their way into his pride and joy through an opening at the back of the boat cover. A tighter cover would’ve kept him from having to smell cat urine for the rest of the time he owned the boat.

Invest in the best cover you can afford, and take into account your local climate, whether you’ll need the cover for trailering, and how to maximize coverage while minimizing abrasion. A custom cover from the manufacturer is often best, but they’ll often range from $1,000 to $2,000. If that’s out of your budget or not available, here are some of the best boat covers that are widely available:

  • Best Budget: MSC Heavy Duty 600D Marine Grade Polyester Canvas Trailerable Waterproof Boat Cover
  • Best for Sun and Rain Protection: Leader Accessories Solution Dyed Waterproof Trailerable Boat Cover
  • Best Heavy Duty: Westland Select Fit Cover
  • Most Versatile: Bass Pro Shops WeatherSafe Trailer Tite Standard-Duty Trailerable Boat Cover
  • Best for Year-Round Protection: Stopbyus 6.25 oz Semi-Custom Boat Cover Measured to fit a Tournament BASS O/B
  • Best for Storage: VINGLI Heavy Duty Boat Cover

How I Tested the Best Boat Covers

This assignment to write about the best boat covers could not have come at a better time for me. I’d just taken delivery of my 2022 bass boat but due to the supply chain issues that have plagued just about everyone for the past two years, my cover was going to be delayed by four or five months. An uncovered boat just wouldn’t fly, either when staying at a lakeside motel, or when taking my boat back to the dealership for a few after-the-fact add-ons. I needed that new carpeting and glistening gel coat to be protected from prying fingers and the spring rains that plague our area. At the same time, I didn’t want to invest a lot in a short-term solution. That left me in a position to put some lower and mid-range options to the test for short periods of exposure.

Best Boat Covers: Reviews & Recommendations

Key features.

  • Eight available colors
  • Marine-grade polyester canvas
  • Storage bag included
  • Straps with quick-release buckles
  • Remarkably good fit for a non-custom cover
  • Budget priced
  • Not ideal for trailering

This budget cover comes in multiple sizes and colors with adjustable straps for perfect fit. Despite being bargain priced, this cover packs a lot of features into a single (included) storage bag. They include an elastic cord sewn into the bottom hem to keep a tight fit at the margins, trimmable quick-snap straps, and reinforced seams to handle a lot of weight and pressure. With the seats in on my 20-foot bass boat, there was still enough material to get over the boat’s edges and create a tented shape to force water off, although the straps still could not pull it quite tight enough to make it suitable for trailering.

  • Solution-dyed fabric with color-fastness
  • Double-stitched seams
  • Reflective seams
  • Long-lasting fabric coloration
  • Budget price
  • Air vents to allow moisture to escape
  • Not made to withstand truly inclement weather

This bargain-priced option does well for theft-deterrence and minimally inclement weather. Boaters who are not going to combat extreme weather but who want to keep the sun and rain off of their boats will find great value in this remarkably versatile and well-fitting option. It’s more than just a tarp, as the package includes double-stitched seams, an elastic cord throughout the bottom hem, and air vents to prevent the inside from becoming a terrarium. Probably not ideal for long-term storage in a blizzard, or for trailering, but this inexpensive cover will pay for itself the first time it protects your boat from prying eyes, rodents or a nasty rain storm.

Best Heavy Duty : Westland Select Fit Cover

  • Tough 100 percent Vantage polyester
  • Sewn-in reinforcements in key spots
  • Multiple adjustable straps around the boat
  • UV and mildew resistant
  • Abrasion-resistant
  • Lightweight
  • Straps not included

The Westland Select Fit is a step up from the bargain-priced covers, with more features and more weather resistance to show for it. This heavy-duty cover, which comes in multiple lengths, beam widths, and colors, is a step up from the basic models that come at a fraction of a price. It’s immediately obvious why—more heavy-duty materials and a greater thoughtfulness about rub points and durability. As opposed to some of the less expensive covers, I might feel comfortable trailering with this one at 70 miles per hour, and be confident that it holds in the right places. At the very least, it will excel if you keep your boat outside in places where there’s either heavy snow, strong sunshine, or both.

  • 300-denier polyester
  • UV-, mildew- and water-repellent
  • Adjustable tie-down straps
  • Universal design
  • Won’t stretch or shrink
  • Limited number of straps

Although this cover is bargain-priced and only has a limited number of straps, it fits remarkably snug on a wide range of boats, even if you’re loaded up with deck-top accessories like bulky trolling motors or graphs. It doesn’t have as many straps for full customization as some of the others in its class, but it does have an elastic bow strap and reinforcements at the windshield, where the trolling motor lies, and at the corners. That means your boat will be protected for both the short term and the long term.

  • 6.25-ounce 600 denier solution dyed polyester
  • Elastic hemline
  • Four-ply double-stitched seams
  • Seven color options
  • Year-round protection from the elements
  • Shock cord is sewn into the hem for a tight fit
  • Material is not only strong but breathable
  • More expensive than most universal options

For boaters and anglers who need 12-month protection through a range of conditions, this cover comes in at a price below many of the truly custom options, yet with many of the same features. It’s reinforced and padded in the right places, so it protects your boat against the elements and any other interlopers and can be trailered long distances with the confidence that it won’t result in scratches to fiberglass, aluminum, windshields, or graphs. Granted, the price isn’t insubstantial, but if it alleviates the fear of major damage or disfigurement, it is well worth it.

  • Multiple lengths/widths
  • Four colors
  • 600 Denier polyester waterproof fabric
  • Waterproof, tear-resistant fabric
  • Reinforcement panels in key wear spots
  • Integrated buckle and adjustable strap tightening system

There are quite a few comparable and semi-customizable boat cover options at the bottom end of the price spectrum, and this cover offers lots of features that are only standard in covers at two or three times the price. Those include reinforcement strips and double stitching that will allow it to prevail over semi-inclement weather. Probably not the best choice for trailering or if you live in an area with consistent blizzards or hail, but this does the job and will pay for itself in no time in areas with only occasional bad weather.

Things to Consider Before Buying the Best Boat Cover

Customization.

Does your boat have a poling platform? A high-mounted trolling motor? A windshield? Any of those factors can throw off a cover and make it tough to secure. You want your cover to be as snug as possible while not bringing undue pressure on any points that will suffer from it. If you have any of those options, it might be worth it to invest in a custom cover.

Water and UV Repellency

The best boat waxes aren’t enough protection. If you’re keeping your boat outside—in a slip, in a yard, or outside of a hotel – for any period of time, you want to protect it against the harshest elements. If it lets in water or fades over time, the cover has not done its job. Most covers will lose some level of waterproofness over time and can be treated with appropriate over-the-counter products, but out of the package, even an inexpensive one should be fairly impervious.

Trailerability

I do not like trailering long distances with my cover on the boat as I feel it reduces my sightlines and often impedes gas mileage. Furthermore, if the cover is not fully secure and padded in the right places, trailering with it on can do damage to your boat, leaving scratch and swirl marks in obvious places. Nevertheless, when towing through a storm or places where there’s likely to be heavy dust and dirt in the air, covered trailering may be a necessity. Very few universal fit covers handle this job well, but some do it better than others.

Yes, you should cover your boat in the winter to keep it clean and prevent mildew or rust. You’ll thank yourself come spring.

600D means 600 denier and is a measurement of the nylon’s thickness.

Boat covers typically range from $100 to $1,000 depending on materials and boat size.

Great company to deal with!

Just wish they were the first company I purchased a cover from instead of carcovers.com. This company is honest, great quality cover (actually waterproof) and they do not have a limit on the number of warranty claims like carcovers.com. Obviously, these guys know that their covers will last more than a year. I had an issue with the cover they suggested as it was too small. They immediately sent out the correct one.

So far so good

So far so good. The ordering process was easy and standard delivery was fairly fast. The material feels better than our last cover but we haven't yet put it on for the season, soon though. I'm hoping it holds up better than our old one but because of the size of our camper and the sizes available we had to get one that will have a few inches of extra fabric, like our old one which worries me. Despite how much we tried to tie down the wind always got the best of it and caused lots of flapping and areas of damage. I'd like to say we have continued to learn each season on what we can do to help prevent that so this year will be a test to see.

Very fast delivery. Item was as described. Fits fairly well. Already covered 25’ RV and appears to fit and work well. Did not include any instructions for installation. Instructions would have been helpful. Had to find information online.

Inexpensive cover that feels pretty well made. Wish it was made in the US, but the elastic is strong, would have to be a serious wind that would knock my scooter over to blow the cover off

Very little instructions

Very little instructions. The instructions included with the cover had no dimensions or measurements for installation. When we called for support, the person could not give us information either. Basically had to take a chance and drill holes in the boat where we thought they should be. Luckily, we were correct.

The color swatches on website need labelled!

I had a tough time telling exactly what some of the color choices on the website were. As a result, I called to confirm my selection - the helpful rep gave me a quick rundown of the actual color choices and I'm so glad she did. We haven't installed the Bimini yet so it's still in the box and the reason for just 4 stars. Otherwise, exemplary website and service. Thanks Empire Covers!

Is it worth it?

In 2020, when It looked like the pandemic was coming to an end, I decided to commit to a once in a lifetime experience and signed up to do a 10 month yachtmaster traineeship in 2021 with global yacht racing for a 50% discount. I booked for a year later due to needing time to save for the still very expensive course. As the time drew closer to starting the course I realised that even working 60 hour weeks wouldn't have covered enough for the course and spending money. So I got in contact and global yacht racing who were happy to hold my place to start the 10 month course in August 2022 while I continued to save what I needed. Come May 2022, only 2 and a half months before we were planned to depart from port I receive an email from global yacht racing informing me that due to rising costs and the pandemic the 10 month traineeship I had been saving so hard for was going to now only be 3 months and not to worry about not having any experience on a yacht before because you will still be able to pass the offshore yachtmaster exam after the training we provide. As you can imagine, after a year and half of hard saving and looking forward to 10 months sailing around the world this was very upsetting and dis heartening. So I decided to cancel the course and was then told that if I did so I would not receive a refund of what I had already paid even though they reduced the initial deal by 2/3!! After some negotiation we come to am agreement that I would be on the yacht for 6 months and sail around the Mediterranean and doing a regatta, then to do a transatlantic race over to Antigua where we would do our offshore yachtmaster exam. Oh but all of this would come at an extra cost of about £2000 on top of the original price we agreed for 10 months. (What they failed to mention is that I wasn't actually going to be able to do 6 months on the boat and would have to leave the boat for a month anyway due to days in the EU. I found this out 2 weeks into the course from one of the skippers).I was now in a position to have this money spare, so I accepted. After arriving on global yacht racings boat in Cowes we met the 2 skippers aboard who I would soon realise one of them didn't want me there as much as I think she wanted to be there and after about 1000nm it got so uncomfortable on the boat that I felt it was necessary to pull the skippers aside and explain to them that I had paid alot of money to be on this boat and I shouldn't be spoken to/ treated like a worker for them. (I am more than happy to help deep clean the boat and do maintenance jobs, but when the cleaning is left to the other clients and I, while the skippers would go out for breakfast for 4 hours that's what I would class as unfair) Temporarily the yacht improved until we hit St tropez where I would make sandwiches for 11 crew everyday but when I wanted to make myself some pasta in the evening it was not OK. At this point I wanted to leave the boat and get a refund to which the boat owner made the situation better and removed one of the skippers who was making the boat life unbearable (to which I respect the decision) but unfortunately the 2 skippers were a couple and the removal of one of them caused the other to become a little salty towards myself and the other trainee. After a month or so more of delivering the yacht and next to no RYA syllabus training on EH01 (a few crew and I participated in our coastal skipper course in Malta with a different company and this is where we got the majority of the RYA syllabus training) I was told that I was not going to be ready to take my offshore yachtmaster and to go for the lower level of yachtmaster (for the 3rd time, not what I had been sold) . At this point I had already had enough of being on the boat and decided to not go back and take the loss of money because I would have rather worked a boring job in England over winter than be on this yacht sailing around the Caribbean. So I flew home a couple of days later. To highlight the reason I gave this review 1 star and not 0 is because there was about 4 days of training I had missed on EH01, the reason being, after arriving at port after 4 days - 1 week at sea where the crew would be working 4 hours on, 4 hours off shifts, without being able to have a shower and feeling an almost constant tension on the boat, all I wanted to do was get off of it I have tried to make this review as short as possible and even though it isn't very short, it is 100% honest. Honestly If if it wasn't for the other crew members and trainee I had met on the boat I wouldn't have been there for 3 months. I hope this review isnt taken light hearted and if you're thinking of spending your money on global yacht racing, make sure you are 100% clear on what you're getting yourself in for.

The team was just fantastic

The team was just fantastic. The knowledge of the captain and first mate is impressive. If you are asking about opportunities to improve, I will suggest the next: 1. Enough vegetables for the whole trip and alternatives of bread, cheese and food in general. 2. Bring on board one sailor junior that can be in charge of sailing chores and housekeeping. 3. Bring a desalinizator so more water can be used by the crew for self cleaning instead of just wet towels. 4. The shift of 3 hours to sleep seemed too short taking in hand that we were waked up 15mins before plus the time it took to prepare to sleep we slept 2 or 2.5hrs. I would suggest 4x4 or make a roll of just 2 persons in standby so the third can sleep 5 or 6 hours in a row.

Date of experience : 06 November 2019

I signed up for traineeship. After 1 month I was advised the course was cancelled due to Covid. I received £8k back (50% of cost of 10mth course) for less than 8 weeks of training. They will not remove pictures of me from social media and have not provided the RYA certificates for all the courses completed. They no longer reply to emails.

Reply from Global Yacht Racing

Hi Julie, Sorry you seem to be so upset, times are difficult for us all but it would be better if you stuck to the facts rather than your "Trumpist' rant as above. I'm not going to get into a to and fro with you on this forum, I will say that your Rant isn't factual or correct. In fact its bollocks.....We are in a global pandemic and we, as a business, did our very best to continue with your training and keep you safe. We didn't cancel the course and gave you a very fair refund. You chose to leave as you wanted to 'sail somewhere warm'.....good luck with that. I'm glad you are no longer with our programme, as to be honest having you out and about in the marine industry with our good name attached to your certification would be a worry for me. Your RYA cert is on its way. Did I mention there is a pandemic and everyone, including the RYA is working from home? * AVOID AS A CLIENT

A hobby project has turned into a global sensation for an Aussie cover band about to embark on its first full-scale national tour.

"Mick Fleetwood, that's right Mick Fleetwood he raved about us which was very humbling," the band's founder Constantine Delo said.

"The guys from Kiss have written to us."

Con started the band in Adelaide in November 2017 when he got his crew together to record a jukebox of the world's greatest hits.

Since then, they have recorded over 300 songs from their favourite artists, including Phil Collins, Barbra Streisand and Fleetwood Mac.

"It just exploded. It's been referred to as lightning in a bottle and it is that and we are really fortunate," Con said.

Through the Covid years their online fan base started to grow.

Now, the band is hitting the road, backed by legendary promoter Michael Chugg, who has brought everyone from Elton John to Dolly Parton and Madonna to Australia.

"When that man makes a phone call people pick up the phone, so for us it's like the Holy Grail for us," Con said.

"You know I've been seeing this band around for a while and then I saw they had a billion views and it's like whoa hang on a minute," Chugg said.

"When you get people like Mick Fleetwood and Christopher Cross and Leo Sayer ... texting and emailing saying 'you did a better version than I did' there's something going on.

The numbers suggest a tour overseas is next.

"They are getting calls from all over the world," Chugg said.

"'Come and play at the palace in Morocco, come and do some big shows in Brazil'.

"I can see them playing major festivals around the world after the big headline acts go on and just wiping everyone out because they're that good."
