Sea Trial: Pershing 9x

The Pershings are the ultimate lush rush.

They are 40-plus-knot performance delivered with rooster-tail ostentation. They’re for blasting over to the best spot for lunch ahead of the pack. For going a bit farther, faster, to reach the best diving. For being the last yacht to leave the bay on a Sunday evening and still getting back to the dock first.

And the Italian builder’s 9x is pure Pershing . A pair of 2,638 hp 16V 2000 M96L MTUs hooked up to Top System surface drives deliver massive punch and a plume that can top 30 feet. Pershing says the maximum speed for this 92-footer is 42 knots, although during our test off La Spezia, Italy, we managed a knot more at something approaching half-load: 11 people, one-third fuel, one-half fresh water, and empty black and gray tanks, but a full garage. Conditions were close to perfect, with still air and flat-calm seas that we couldn’t wait to tear up. The only imperfection was an outside air temperature of 52 degrees Fahrenheit, which, with a backdrop of snow-capped Apennine Mountains, probably seemed more brisk than our reality. Certainly if you were outside when she was wound up, you noticed the wind chill, but thankfully her interior was a constant 66 degrees F, so I can vouch for the heating system, although I would rather not make a habit of it. I’m British and prefer yachting weather to be like my tea: hot.

Handling is as fun as I can imagine with 165,000 pounds or so of yacht. She feels every bit as precise as smaller Pershing models, running on a hull developed from Pershing’s 92, which in turn evolved from the 90 and 88.

Must-have options, based on my time aboard, include twin Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizers for comfort at anchor, and a Xenta electro-hydraulic joystick control system for close-quarters maneuvering. At speeds faster than 8 knots, skippers can cruise the yacht using the joystick, a trick that I found immensely satisfying in the big seats down below as well as on the flybridge. Altering course required nothing more than a slight twist of my thumb and index finger.

At a 38-knot cruise, our 9x’s motors were turning 2,250 rpm and burning 110 gallons per engine, which, allowing for a 10 percent reserve, equates to a range of almost 370 nautical miles. At full chat, those diesels are sucking up 2.2 gallons per minute, or 6.3 gallons per nautical mile. Setting the throttles to bumble, which I deem to be around 750 rpm, sees the 9x settle into a 10-knot cruise for around 900 nautical miles.

Pershing interiors are crisp, reflecting youthful tastes. Our test yacht, Najati, fused a satin-gloss ebony and whitened oak sole, along with furnishings from Poltrona Frau and cushions by Fendi Casa. I was convinced that some of the cupboards were sheathed in snakeskin or exotic printed leather, until I realized the material was a silvery fabric. It’s a nice vibe.

Owners can choose a three- or four-stateroom layout. Najati has the master amidships, the VIP forward with a diagonal berth, and two guest staterooms in between (their berths can convert from twins to doubles). The companionway belowdecks is off-center, which means the starboard stateroom is a little beamier than the one to port.

The chaise lounge in the owners’ stateroom is the biggest touch point on the yacht. I tried it with enthusiasm, but actually, as is, it isn’t quite right for my 6-foot-6-inch frame. I found it more comfortable when I was sitting the wrong way around, with my back to the bulkhead, although I’m quite sure Pershing’s engineers would sort that one out for me in a flash if I asked.

The yacht’s galley doubling as a crew mess is also on this deck, reached by a dogleg staircase from the portside corner of the main salon.

A garage under the stern sun pad is big enough for a tender and a toy. Najati has the largest Williams RIB that fits, a Turbojet 385, as well as a Sea-Doo.

Following our sea trial, Najati faced a long voyage south as a large piece of deck cargo, on a transport ship bound for Africa. Her owner was taking delivery in Angola, where mining and oil resources have created one of the continent’s fastest-growing economies — growing almost as fast as the Pershing 9x flies.

Coming Soon: Super Pershings

The first Pershing 140 is under construction at the Ferretti Group’s facilities in Ancona, Italy. As with all Pershings since 1985, Fulvio de Simoni designed this new flagship, which has a snub nose. The 140 is also the first all-aluminum Pershing, the first to have a raised pilothouse, and the longest hull to date, besting her next-closest sistership by 25 feet. Features will include a beach club with three fold-down sides, and a covered hot tub on the foredeck.

Fabrication began in early 2017, and Hull No. 1 is expected to launch by September, when she’ll be delivered to Asia as Chorus Line. She has the more powerful of two propulsion options: four MTU 16V 2000 M96Ls and four Marine Jet Power water jets, with a projected maximum speed around 40 knots.

Pershing recently released renderings of an even bigger trideck design, the 170, which would combine aluminum and carbon fiber in its construction. The builder says that a few clients are interested, and that a second Pershing 140 is scheduled for delivery in late 2019.

Highlights of Pershing's X Generation Models

The Pershing “X Generation” series is innovative in every way, beginning with composite materials based on carbon, vinyl ester resin, and epoxy resin. The yachts' sporty lines are exalted by the large side wings and the aerodynamic profile of the sundeck. Using powerful yet fuel-efficient engines with surface-drive transmissions, these yachts provide all passengers onboard with the famous "Pershing Thrill."

Pershing’s X Generation yachts provide a diverse range of models. With a yacht length to meet every need, boaters will find luxury, speed, and comfort with any of the 9X, 8X, 7X, 6X, and 5X models (92’, 83’, 69’, 62’ and 54’, respectively).

PERSHING 9X

The Pershing 9X  yacht is eye-catching in the use of carbon fiber, the side wings built into the superstructure, and the sundeck’s aerodynamic profile. The Pershing 9X is 92 feet in length (28 meters) and capable of 42 knots. This luxurious yacht can carry 20 passengers comfortably and has four cabins and six heads.

A few highlight features of the Pershing 9X include:

• Twin MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines and a surface-drive system with Rolla surface propellers. Performance comes in at a top speed of 42 knots and an impressive maximum range of 380 nautical miles at a cruising speed of up to 38 knots.
• Integrated control, maneuvering, and monitoring systems are housed in a futuristic helm station created with Poltrona Frau, an Italian furniture maker that specializes in leatherwork.
• The hull is composed of composite materials using carbon and vinyl ester resin and epoxy resin is used in the deck and superstructure.
• Joystick functions and a surface-drive system provide superb handling capabilities for the Pershing 9X.
• Fully integrated drive, navigation, and monitoring systems for high performance and trim optimization interact between engines, onboard instrumentation, and control systems. The intuitive platform features components from Top System and Onyx for the Easy Set system, Xenta Systems for the electro-hydraulic steer-by-wire system, and Naviop-Simrad for the navigation and monitoring systems. 
• Natural light is optimized inside the Pershing 9X with four windows, with portholes, in the hull bulwarks for a total glass surface of over 15 square meters.
• Navigation is available on large touchscreens at the helm station and the pilot station on the sun deck.

The Pershing 9X partnership was born of the work of yacht designer Fulvio De Simoni, the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee under the guidance of Piero Ferrari, and the engineering department.

The Pershing 9X optimizes space onboard with the cockpit as an extension of the lounge, a sun pad, and a living area with a table that can be electrically lowered for more space. The glass door and windows that fold and retract into the bulkheads below the deck seamlessly join the interior to the exterior for an even larger main deck.

Two spoilers run along the fore-triangle to conceal the mooring cleats, fairleads, and winches.

PERSHING 8X

The Pershing 8X yacht

The Pershing 8X  yacht is light, built from carbon fiber, super fuel-efficient, and capable of reaching a top speed of 45 knots with two MTU 16V 2000 M96 engines. All this is navigated by an integrated propulsion control system for maneuvering, navigation, and monitoring systems. All heads turn with the classic Pershing sleek and sporty lines and characteristic side wings and aerodynamic sun deck.

The Pershing 8X won at the Motor Boat Awards in January of 2021 in the “Custom Yachts” category based on innovative features, technical parameters, and style based on meticulous performance tests and sea trials. The Motor Boat Awards are organized by Motor Boat & Yachting.

At 83 feet (25.55 meters long) and 19 feet (5.86 meters wide), the Pershing 8X is the result of the collaboration between Fulvio De Simoni, the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee led by Mr. Piero Ferrari, and the Group Engineering Department. The yacht comfortably holds 16 passengers and has four cabins and three heads.

PERSHING 7X

The light, fast, and high-performing Pershing 7X  yacht is part of Pershing’s X Generation. Sporty, bold, sleek, and packed with state-of-the-art technology, Fulvio De Simoni’s design uses ultra-lightweight materials.

The surface drive allows navigation at higher cruising speeds with lower fuel consumption and two MAN V12 1800 engines enable the Pershing 7X to reach speeds up to 50 knots. For significant efficiency, carbon fiber is the primary material, as well as lightweight alloys, and lithium batteries. The displacement is 35 metric tons.

With 69 feet 3 inches (21.11 meters) of length and a 17-foot beam (5.35 meters), 16 passengers can enjoy the luxurious yacht with a three-cabin and three-head layout.

PERSHING 6X (Project)

The Pershing 6X  yacht is a bold addition to the Pershing X Generation line. At 62 feet (18.94 meters) in overall length with a beam of 16 feet (4.80 meters) wide, and a draft of 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 meters) the sleek and streamlined yacht is born of collaboration between Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee led by Mr. Piero Ferrari, the design firm headed by Fulvio De Simoni, and the engineering department.

A pair of 1,550 hp MAN V12 1550 engines propel the aerodynamic Pershing 6X to a speed of 48 knots and a cruising speed of 42 knots. Although compact, the Pershing 6X packs top technology and efficient design into each yacht. The standard Pershing 6X comfortably holds 14 passengers and has three cabins and three bathrooms.

PERSHING 5X

The Pershing 5X yacht, at 54 feet 2 inches length overall, comes with two Volvo D11-IPS 950 engines for speeds up to 36 knots. Twelve passengers are comfortable aboard, and the yacht includes two cabins and two heads.

Serving as an extension of the lounge, the 9X's cockpit features a huge sun pad aft. The forward section houses a living area featuring a small table, which occupants can electrically lower, providing extra shaded space for relaxation. Retractable glass doors and windows separate the cockpit from the main deck lounge, offering seamless integration between the two areas, a common theme with many of Pershing's yachts.

The ultimate indoor relaxation spot, the saloon offers plenty of sunlight and is as comfortable and luxurious as anything you'll find at this price point. Navigating the delicate balance between aesthetics and functionality, Pershing designed the 9X's interior in partnership with the Italian design house Poltrona Frau. The result? A stunning living area you may have no interest in leaving for a long time.

Aft, a large U-shaped sofa and coffee table furnish the saloon, while the front hosts a six-seater dining area just behind a high-tech helm station with three touchscreen monitors and leather seats.

Moving out of the saloon to the bow, you'll find a similarly functional and spacious foredeck where a U-shaped sofa and a table sit adjacent to a large sun pad. The area also incorporates a garage for additional storage space.

Lower Deck and Sundeck

A staircase next to the helm station descends to the 9X's well-laid-out cabins. The master cabin features a large bed, vanity desk, flat-screen TV, and an elegant ensuite bathroom. Additional guest accommodations include a VIP suite, a double cabin, and a twin cabin, each with ensuite bathrooms.

The sundeck offers an extra spot for outdoor relaxation and socializing. Customizable to different tastes and configurations, the standard format comes with a lounge dinette and sun pads and houses the boat's secondary helm station at the front.

Engine and Propulsion

Twin MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines, each generating an impressive 2,638 mhp, power the 9X's remarkable performance. Reaching a top speed of 42 knots, it cruises at 38 knots with a maximum range of 380 nautical miles.

A need for speed: On board a Pershing 9X yacht for sale
