Guide to Kefalonia

Emerald isle of mesmerising beauty

The largest island in the Ionian archipelago , Kefalonia offers spellbinding vistas with lush, pine-clad mountains and charming pastel-hued villages.

The island's spellbinding beauty also formed the backdrop for Louis de Bernières’ iconic novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin , with the award-winning eponymous film capturing the imagination of a global audience.

With numerous instagram-worthy beaches to choose from, many of them only accessible by boat, Kefalonia has long been a draw card for luxury yacht charters looking for a secluded getaway in Greece . Among these is the picture-perfect Myrtos Beach that lies in the island’s north-west flank; a pristine stretch of sands bordered by high limestone cliffs and lapped by turquoise waters so clear it's utopia personified. During the summer months it can get quite busy, with the best times to visit in the morning and late afternoon when all the tourists have departed.

For something a little more secluded, the mellow waters of Dafnoudi and Emblisi Beach boast excellent snorkeling, while on Koroni and Lefka Beach you can enjoy unique sightings of the island's beloved residents; Loggerhead sea turtles that congregate in huge numbers on their shores.

For culture vultures, the confectionery-colored Venetian houses of Assos are an absolute must-see on your tour of the island. Overlooked by the ruins of a medieval castle, this pretty scalloped hamlet set against a backdrop of lush hillsides and craggy distant mountains is a great place to drop anchor for a spot of lunch, or overnight stay.

Another cultural attraction is the beautiful Venetian coastal village of Fiskardo in the northeast, opposite the island of Ithaki. One of the most popular spots on the island, Fiskardo escaped the ravages of the 1953 earthquake and has retained its unmistakable Dolce Vita vibe. Boasting a plethora of upmarket seafood restaurants, chic boutiques and a winding waterfront lined with superyachts, you may think you’re in Saint Tropez . A great place to enjoy some fine dining ashore.

Of course, a visit to Kefalonia would not be complete without a visit to its famous Melissani Cave, where you'll find an astonishing aquamarine lake set within a magical cavern. The oculus in the roof allows sunlight to filter in, providing a shimmering light show that has to be seen to be believed.

Boasting countless jaw-dropping beaches, glorious medieval castles and dreamy coves, Kefalonia is a private yacht charter paradise for anyone cruising the region. Start planning your next trip with family and friends by comparing all Greece charter yachts .

Flexible, trustworthy and great service.

yacht marina kefalonia

Sailing from Kefalonia, a new boat, last minute, flexibel, a fair price, friendly and a trustworthy kind company - all our wishes were met thanks to Spiros! We had a fantastic holiday, away from the crowd and we felt save and relaxed on the boat because of the open and honest communication with Spiros. Highly recommended! Thanks again Spiros!

Very Excellent Service

Excellent Service. We had a very good experience with this company. We rented a Catamaran Lagoon 42 and the check in was very good. We had a problem with the engine of our dingy and they solved it by sending a mechanic within 4 hours who repaired the engine within 1 hour. This was outstanding. The check out process was fast, friendly and without any trouble. Overall an A+ experience for Mr. Spiros and his team at Seven Sailing & Tourism in Kefalonia. I can recommend his service 100%.--- LAGOON 42, AUGUST 2021

Best holiday ever – July 2018

Echte Empfehlung: prima organisierter Familienurlaub! – Mai 2018

yacht marina kefalonia

Catamaran charter – August 2018

I would like to inform our satisfaction about the week we spended with catamaran odysseas. The boat was in excellent condtons and the places we visited very nice..Certainly we’ll back in this area supported by your organization. ---- Lagoon 450, August 2018

The holiday that I dreamed of — August 2019

I had planned our island hopping/ sailing trip for so long and it was EVERYTHING that I’d hoped for!! Spiros was so accommodating...very responsive to lots of emails !! Our skipper Ilias was wonderful too. Wonderful memories 💞

Sailing from Kefalonia – August 2018

We had a wonderful one week charter in October sailing from Sami around the Ionian Islands. We chartered San Giorgio, I beautiful 2017 Lagoon 42 which was luxury indeed. We set sale with 2 families on board to explore the Ionian and had the most wonderful holiday visiting beautiful bays with turquoise seas as well as amazing villages like Fiskardo. Spiros was extremely helpful and a pleasure to charter from, always quick to respond to any questions and make sure we had the best possible time, we also had support from the owner which was much appreciated on a couple of technical problems. He recommend Kefalonia Sailing and would definitely use them again. A happy Sailor --- Bareboat charter, Lagoon 42, August 18

Recommended and will use again

We chartered a boat for August 2020. The initial booking process was easy and communication was excellent. Spiros is very friendly, helpful and accommodating. He even put us in contact with a reliable car rental company. Despite all the uncertainty about whether our trip would even happen due to COVID-19, Spiros was great all the way through; reassuring us that even if it couldn't happen we would be able to move the booking and we wouldn't lose any money. The boat was excellent (only a couple of years old) and our Captain Niko was an absolute star; he quickly became part of the family and the children loved him too. We have a such a great time and make some amazing memories. We will definitely use their services again...LAGOON 39, SEP 21

Exceptional holiday – June 2018

We had a wonderful sailing holiday June 2018. Thanks to Spiros, with exceptional and warm asssitance. Our Bavaria Cruiser 41 2017 was in perfect condition, kept extremely clean, all in perfect working order. Teh skipper provided excellent job, My deep thanks to Spiros and skipper too. Wish to repeat this wonderful experience again in near future.... All my best... Skippered charter, Bavaria 41, June 2018

Bareboat Kefalonia October 21

I would like to thank Spiros very much for all the help with our charter. All contacts were all very good at helping us too for example when we returned to Sami before the storm. Without his personal help too we would not have had the good experience.

Kefalonia yacht and catamaran charter with PlainSailing.com

Sailing from Kefalonia

Kefalonia is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, and it's even better when viewed from the sea - sailing around it's beaches, cliffs, forests and bays is idyllic. The whole of the Ionian islands are a joy to sail around, with guaranteed sunshine and reliable winds, but Kefalonia is often the island which is the most memorable, and one which you'll have to keep coming back to.

From Sami, our base in Kefalonia, you can visit Ithaki (the home of the legendary Odysseus), the beautiful beach villages of Sivota and Meganissi, the fishing village of Astakos, and the pretty architecture of Fiskardo. Some people come to the Ionian year on year - there's nothing quite so relaxing and magnificent as sailing here. We can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran, with one of our trusted Charter Partners - just get in touch or search in the pink box with live prices and availability !

Must See if you're Sailing from Kefalonia

SAILING RATING:  Beginner - With easy line-of-sight navigation, clear waters and light winds it's a great start point for sailors (and an easy cruising ground for experienced ones).  Peak season is July & August, but you can sail here from March to October.

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Kefalonia

From Kefalonia, or the village of Sami, there’s options to explore more of Kefalonia and visit Argostoli, or to head South to Zakynthos, but most people choose to head around the Southern Ionian islands, where there’s sunshine, good winds, and a fine mix of exciting islands to explore – in fact, there are so many of them, and they’re so close together, one of the issues in arranging an itinerary is finding ways to actually get some sailing done.

Kefalonia - 6 day sailing itinerary

Given the Force 3 to 6 winds, you’d expect the average yacht or catamaran to be able to hit speeds over at least five knots, which means that the sailing aspect should only take three to four hours a day – which leaves plenty of time to explore your starting or finishing point each day, or to bimble around, explore bays as you pass them, or take your time to breakfast and lunch at your leisure. All in all, it should make for a relaxing holiday, and you shouldn’t find yourself racing against the clock.

Vathi

It’s also a simple enough day for navigation – point yourself out of Sami bay, and you’ll spot another island, which we’re going turn to starboard and follow it’s coastline round (keeping the coast on the port side of the yacht) until we reach our destination. The prevailing summer wind is a North or North-westerly, which follows the coastline of the Greek mainland, so you’ll likely be beating into the wind at first, then reaching around the bottom of Ithaki, then beating back up to the village of Vathi, before reaching and running into and down Vathi bay when you get there.

As you head down the bay to Vathi look out for some old cannons which are still in situ from the days of the Venetian empire. They’re pretty dormant now, but just imagine the damage they could do to your modern ship as you sail by. Arriving in Vathi is pretty special – the whole town is built up on the hillside around the marina which makes it feel like you’re almost arriving in the centre of a giant amphitheatre.

The island of Itaki (or Ithaca as it is known in English) is most famous for being the birthplace and home of Homer’s legendary Odysseus, who took part in the battle of Troy in 800 BC. Local archaeologists recently discovered a three-storey palace which dates to about the same era and claimed it was once Odysseus’ palace. That suggests that he wasn’t fictional, and, if you believe that, then this week you should look out for sirens, minotaurs and ladies with snakes instead of hair. Vathi has a reasonable range of shops and restaurants to explore.

Astakos

If time is on your side, you could stop at the white sands of Gidaki beach on your starboard side on your way off Ithaki, or there’s beaches just off Drakonera as you get closer to Astakos. You will likely be broad reaching against the prevailing winds, so your crew can stay seated and rest easy for most of the day.

Despite being on the mainland, Astakos is a quiet little village, which, being in the middle of nowhere, is dependent on fishing at sea and growing grapes on land – hence the food and drink here is usually exceptional. They’re a friendly bunch in town, and there are some great beaches nearby.

Sivota

Sivota is at the end of a narrow-ish bay. It’s a beautiful place, with white limestone cliffs, sandy bays, turquoise seas and classic Greek white-washes houses all surrounded by forests of pine. If it wasn’t for the fact that this was popular with land-lubbing tourists, then this would be idyllic. However, the land-lubbers add to the atmosphere as night falls – by day, the village is sleepy, but after dusk the tourists all leave their all-inclusive resorts in search of authentic Greek bars, tavernas and cuisine – which means that evenings can be quite lively, and there’s a strong chance you’ll end up doing some Greek circle-dancing if you have a few drinks.

Outside of the bars, it’s a serene and blissful place to spend the night.

Meganissi

We can also take some time to check out a natural wonder near Sivota. Heading pretty much directly East from Sivota, you’ll find the cave of Papanikolis on the coast of Meganissi. This is the second largest cave in the whole of Europe (it’s over 120m long!) and has a history of being used by local sailors to hide from pirates, and, later, as the hiding place for the Papanikolis submarine during world war two.

Following the coastline round, there’s plenty to explore on the back of Meganissi, and, in fact, the island is so small that if you dropped someone off on a beach on the South of the island, they could walk across the island to Vathy a lot faster than you can sail there (so they can go and get the shopping in). Vathy is the quietest of the villages on Meganissi, but is also fast becoming a tourist destination in its own right. It has a number of tavernas along the waterfront, and is a perfect example of a typical Greek island town. This is what a Mediterranean sailing holiday is all about.

Fiskardo

Fiskardo is a glamourous fishing village come tourist town with colourful houses and a bohemian atmosphere, and is very popular with sailors. The harbour is right in the centre of town and so close to bars and restaurants that if they were full, you could probably persuade them to walk an extra few metres and get them to serve you on your own boat.

It’s a cute town and also an ideal place to stock up on souvenirs of Kefalonia (if you haven’t already).

Sami

To get back to base in Sami it’s a very straightforward South-easterly sail down the channel between Ithaki and Kefalonia. You could go around the whole of the island of Ithaki if you’re feeling ambitious, but there’s plenty enough bays and places to explore on the short route (such as Agia Sofia or Chorgota beach, amongst others) that you’ll find the day passes by quick enough as it is. You’ll likely be sailing with the prevailing wind behind you too, so you might be running slower than earlier in the week.

Take the boat back to the berth where you found it in the harbour, and the charter company will arrange for the tanks to be refuelled by a mobile tanker. Another benefit of not heading to one of the big charter bases is that you won’t be having to wait with tens of other boats in a chaotic queue to use a single fuel berth, so enjoy that.

The charter company might come and inspect the boat, but you can stay on it for the night – which means you couldn’t be better located for enjoying the food and nightlife of Sami. If you haven’t yet explored the town, then now is a good time to do so, and you’ll quickly realise that this was the place where they filmed Captain Corelli’s Mandolin (because they certainly don’t make a secret of it).

And then it’s the end of your sunny and super-relaxing week. It’s time to get a transfer and an aeroplane and head back to civilisation, which will seem even further from small Greek fishing villages than you can imagine. But don’t worry – you can come back here whenever you choose. It’s great if everyone on the boat is already talking about what you're going to do next year, and if that’s the case (of course it is!), then check out some of the other destination guides for some inspiration of where to head for your next big adventure. See you soon!

Sailing Conditions

Greece Sailing - Wind Conditions

In summer, the winds tend to be between Force 3 and Force 6, which is optimal for filling the sails and getting the sense of exhilaration that only heeling over in a big boat out at sea can bring. Those wind speeds also mean you should be able to make a decent way, and it's not unthinkable to get over eight knots out of the winds when it's a good day. The reliable winds also help to keep sailors cool when they're out at sea.

The prevailing summer winds arrive from the North, following the coastline down from Croatia, past Corfu, and whistling through the Ionian islands. If you're heading towards Patras from Kefalonia, you might also notice some winds arriving from the West, which will shoot down the channel to the Saronic gulf.

Marina Details - Sami port, Kefalonia

Sami port is, as the name suggests, the main port for the village of Sami, which means you'll be able to watch fishing vessels and ferries going about their business from the deck of your yacht or catamaran. It’s also only a few hundred metres to a fabulous beach at Antisamos.

Being a port, there aren't all the facilities you might expect from a yacht marina, but the port is right in the middle of the village, which means you can literally hop off your boat and into a shop, bar or restaurant. It also has another advantage - because it's so small, it really feels like you're sailing well off the beaten track, even before you get started!

If your flights don’t match you sailing holiday, you might need to spend a night or two on land at the start or end of your holiday. We recommend Remezzo Apartments or the higher-class Penelope Villas .

Sailing Itineraries from Lefkas

From our base in Lefkas one week charters typically head south towards Kefalonia and Zakynthos or north towards Corfu including mainland harbours like Syvota and Parga. Two week charters give time to cover more area or simply spend more time exploring the spots you are visiting. Below we present a sample one week itinerary of our favourite southern route.

The Southern Ionian Islands

Known for relatively mild winds during the summer, the Ionian Sea is a sailing playground ideal for smooth sailing and family vacation, featuring endless swimming and idyllic nights in isolated bays of unique beauty . Lefkas island itself is full of tranquil coves and bays which one could spend many day exploring!

To the south of Lefkas lies the island of Kefalonia, and a little further Zakynthos. Both are large, well-known touristic islands with a ton of fun things to do , beautiful places to visit, turquoise waters to dive in, and historic sites to visit . On the way from Lefkas to Kefalonia there are many smaller islands well worth a visit, including the amazing Ithaki and the smaller islands of Kalamos and Kastos of the mainland coast.

The Northern Ionian Islands

To the north of Lefkas lies Corfu (where we have our Corfu charter base ), the largest of the Ionian islands, and hands-down the most cosmopolitan of them all . Over the course of its long and distinguished history, Corfu, or Kerkyra, has experienced Italian, French and English rule, each leaving a very distinct imprint on the island and its inhabitants. A mixture of different civilizations and cultures blended together into an amalgam that is undoubtedly Greek in character, and yet truly unique from the rest of Greece.

Heading towards Corfu will usually take you through the mainland ports of northern Greece, including Syvota and Parga , and allowing you to explore the amazing islands of Paxoi and Antipaxoi along the way.

A One Week Sailing Itinerary from Lefkas Day 1: Lefkas to Meganissi (10-15 nautical miles, 2-3 hours sailing)

Today, we set sail from Lefkas marina, heading south through the canal that separates Lefkas island from the mainland. As we leave the canal, we see the rocky islet of Volios on our left and the castle of Agios Georgios on the mainland coast.

Consider stopping at the charming coves and beaches on the mainland coast (Aspros Gialos, Marathia, Varko beach) before continuing south. Alternatively, visit Skorpios , known for its green waters and rumored to be Jackie Kennedy's favorite island . Be aware of the thermal wind during midday hours and the Chiromytis reef near Skorpios, which requires careful navigation.

Our destination for the night is the picturesque Vathi on Meganissi island , with two docking options: the private Odyseas Marina or the small free harbor at the bottom of the bay. Depths here are suitable for various boat sizes. Enjoy traditional fish taverns, beach bars, and the natural beauty of the area. Other overnight options include Spilia , Atherinos , or Kapsali .

Day 2: Meganissi to Ithaca - Vathi (20 nautical miles, 3-4 hours sailing)

Start the day with a refreshing morning swim at Desimi Beach Bay , just 3nm west of Vathi. Next, visit the southern part of Meganisi and the famous Papanikoli Cave , named after a Greek World War II submarine. Be aware however that anchoring is not suitable in this area.

Be cautious of the thermal wind that occurs during midday hours and stronger winds near Vathi, as they arise from the central part of Ithaca island. Today's overnight destination is either Vathi , the capital of Ithaca island, or the picturesque Kioni . While Kioni offers a peaceful ambiance, beautiful beaches, and lush forest hikes, the cosmopolitan Vathi caters to those seeking more lively entertainment . Before reaching Ithaca, consider stopping at the islet of Atokos (One House Bay) for a swim.

In Vathi, there are stern or side mooring options on the southern and eastern sides of the harbor, with depths ranging from 2m to over 4m. Anchoring offshore in the bay is also possible, with depths at 10m and good holding potential, however be prepared for strong north-westerly afternoon winds. Other overnight stay options on Ithaca include Kioni , Frikes , or Pera Pigadi .

Day 3: Ithaca to Kefalonia – Agia Efimia (distances and times vary based on route)

Begin your day with a swim at one of the beaches of Gidaki , Filiatro , or Pera Pegadi if you sail southeast of Ithaca. Alternatively, sail to the northern side of the island and cross the Ithaca-Kefalonia strait to stop for a swim at Agios Nikolaos or Afales . According to legend, the Castle of Odysseus was located in Afales, and underwater findings at 15m depth now support this claim.

Be aware of the stronger thermal effect in the strait of Ithaca-Kefalonia, with wind and waves directed from north to south. Beam reach sailing is recommended for a comfortable cruise. Exercise caution near the rocky islet of Daskalio .

Tonight's overnight stay is at the harbor of Agia Efimia in the northern part of Sami Bay . The municipal port offers water and electricity for a fee. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the enchanting Melissani Lake , approximately 5km from your mooring point. If you're up for a hike, consider the 9.5km trail to the world-famous Myrtos beach .

In Agia Efimia, dock in the northern part of the harbor with sea depths over 3m or the eastern part with depths reaching 5m. Alternatively, anchor in the bay with depths at 4m but be cautious of the bathing area at the western part of the bay. Enjoy traditional taverns and cafes just a few meters from your boat.

Day 4: Skala and Agios Nikolaos (25 nautical miles, 5 hours sailing)

Today, sail to Zakynthos , the southernmost destination on your itinerary. This 25nm journey features the most spectacular landscapes and natural treasures of the Ionian Sea, including Shipwreck Bay and the Blue Caves . Along the way, visit Antisamos Beach for extreme water sports and Skala Beach at the southern coast of Kefalonia for unforgettable photo opportunities.

Be prepared for stronger winds in the southernmost part of Kefalonia and exercise caution around the Kakava shallows outside Skala. Maintain an offshore distance of about 2nm from the coast.

The tranquil harbor of Agios Nikolaos offers a pleasant overnight stay, with a mesmerizing natural landscape and modern entertainment options, including traditional taverns and cozy cafes. Before docking, visit the famous Blue Caves , just 1.5 nautical miles from the harbor, and plan for a morning visit to the Shipwreck as it's nearby.

Approach Agios Nikolaos harbor either from the northern or southern side of the rocky islet of Agios Nikolaos. Avoid the south side for anchorage as it serves fishing boats and ferries. Berth on the western side, where depths are about 2m. Ensure your anchor has enough span to secure your berth during strong ripples caused by the ferry's arrival.

Day 5: Zakynthos to Kefalonia - Poros (23 nautical miles, 4-5 hours sailing)

Start your day with a morning swim at the famous Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach , one of the most iconic beaches in the Ionian Sea. Visit early, as local daily cruises can become crowded after 10 am. Be prepared for the usual early afternoon swell, even without wind. The sea depth in the area is sufficient for safe navigation and anchorage in the middle of the bay .

Tonight's destination is Kefalonia , where you have various options in the eastern part of the island. A suggested stop is the port of Poros , located 23 nm from Shipwreck beach. Near the port, below the town's square, you'll find an organized sandy beach , traditional taverns, and bars for your entertainment.

When approaching Poros , watch out for wind spirals (gusts) from the north. Avoid berthing at the large dock, as it serves daily ferries connecting Kefalonia with Zakynthos and Kyllini. Instead, dock in the south-southwest side of the harbor, where depths are over 2m and the anchor grips well on the sandy seabed.

Day 6: Kefalonia to Lefkas - Sivota (25 nautical miles, 5 hours sailing)

Begin your return journey from Poros to Fiskardo , crossing the Ithaca-Kefalonia strait in the opposite direction (south to north). Morning hours offer the best weather conditions for sailing. Discover hidden gems for a morning swim along the way, and if you haven't already, visit Fiskardo for lunch. You can moor in Fiskardo harbor on the south and west sides, with depths over 2.5m and 3m, respectively. If all berths are occupied, stern to the rocks on the north side, where the depth is over 3m.

Sivota , a picturesque seaside village on the southern coast of Lefkas is an ideal destination for your last night. Each tavern in Sivota provides its own floating pier for free docking, water, and electricity. According to Dörpfeld's theory, Odysseus landed in Sivota on his way back to Ithaca. Mooring in Sivota requires a safe spot at one of the floating piers owned by local taverns, with assistance generously offered by the locals upon arrival. Alternatively, you can anchor in the middle of the bay where the seabed is over 4m deep.

Day 7: Back to Lefkas Marina

The last sailing day includes several popular and famous swimming spots on the western side of Lefkas island. Vassiliki Beach , in the southwestern part of the island, is known to be one of the best in the world for windsurfing. As you head further north, enjoy the waters at Porto Katsiki , Egremni , Megali Petra , and Agios Nikitas beaches, all top tourist destinations worldwide.

As you approach the town of Lefkas from the north side, you'll need to cross the floating bridge of the island. Be cautious and mindful of several important points during this process. First, ensure a safe passage outside Ammoglossa, where the size of the sandbar varies each year due to sand deposition. A green light indicates the entry point here. The floating bridge opens every hour , with priority given to incoming boats. There's a dock for side mooring while you wait for the bridge to open.

After crossing the canal, stay close to the starboard side between the green and red lights. First, on your right, you'll see the port and the town of Lefkas. Following that, Lefkas Marina appears at the end of the harbor and you have returned back to base .

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO

Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.

There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.
