WELCOME TO STILBAAI YACHT CLUB

Stilbaai Yacht Club has been in existence for more than 40 years.   We are situated on the north-eastern bank of the main body of the Vaal Dam approximately 20 km from Deneysville and Vereeniging and approximately 100km from Johannesburg. GPS Co-Ordinates 26°48'52.2"S 28°11'23.6"E    Pin Location :  https://www.google.com/maps/place/Stilbaai+Yacht+Club+-+Entrance+Road/@-26.8144009,28.1897287,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xec72453e711fc6df!8m2!3d-26.8144009!4d28.1897287

As a Yacht Club, we are extremely focused on promoting sailing, especially for the youth and physically handicapped through adaptive sailing support, as well as safety on the water in general.   Although we are traditionally known as the home of Dart Sailing, we have grown to a diversified membership with all types of yachts, and we welcome all sailors and are willing to host events for all catamarans, dinghies, and keelboats on request.

Our camping and sailing environment is secure. The camping site is on the foreshore with several power and water points. There is a large smooth shoreline to accommodate sailing boats of all classes, which provides for easy launching and rigging areas. A long slipway provides for the launching of larger boats. The club layout provides for fantastic visual spectator value on the foreshore.

Stilbaai has an ideal environment for families to enjoy the outdoors.   Our clubhouse has a number of facilities for adults and children, including a pool table, table tennis, dart boards, foozeball, fenced in pool, volleyball court, trampoline, jungle gym, putt putt course etc. etc.    There are communal braai facilities, a licensed pub and DSTV. There are two clean and well-maintained ablution blocks offering showers and baths.

Stilbaai is superbly positioned for the viewing of brilliant sunsets with sundowners at the Wet Bar.

The premises are patrolled by security guards with access control into the Club and the perimeter is secured by an electrical fence. Stilbaai offers clean drinking water and friendly social members.

We are an accredited Sailing Training Centre – See Sail Training on our Web Page for more information on this.   For further enquiries on sail training please contact Shellee Nel (083 626 7597) from SA Sailing Training Centre

Stilbaai is gaining a reputation of being the best managed yacht club on the Vaal Dam and is privileged to have a permanent on-site hands-on manager and experienced race management resources

Heavenly Houseboats on the Vaal

sailboats for sale vaal dam

Imagine huge expanses of unspoilt wetlands inhabited by an exotic array of birds and wildlife. Imagine retiring to bed under a star-filled sky after enjoying a sunset braai. Imagine waking up to a misty sunrise. Imagine no more… With the sounds of waves gently lapping against your boat and croaking frogs as your only company, Old Willow No.7 Houseboat Charters on the Vaal River offers the perfect escape from the frantic concrete jungle of Johannesburg.

Passport to Adventure

When owner of Old Willow No.7 Houseboat Charters’ Dave Gardener offered to accommodate us, it couldn’t have been better timed. After an exhausting weekend on our feet at the National Boat Show, we were longing for a couple of days of relaxation and gratefully accepted his invite.

Old Willow No.7 is situated on the banks of the Vaal River near the Gauteng and Free State border. To get there, simply take the N1 freeway South from JHB and turn left at the Vanderbijlpark / Sasolberg sign.

The road becomes slightly trickier from there, but Old Willow No.7 gladly assisted us with directions. And if you own a GPS, the coordinates 26° 46’ 39.85”S and 27° 46’ 09.13”E will lead you straight to their doorstep.

Fortunately for us, our mode of transport, the trusty Toyota RAV4 2.2 Turbo-Diesel VX made the journey a lot more comfortable. The road between Cape Town and Johannesburg is quite a distance (1 430 km approx.) and a vehicle with superb fuel-consumption, luxurious creature comforts and good road control is always refreshing.

Our sister publication, SA4x4 , can be extremely proud of our fuel-efficient trip with the RAV4. Maintaining the average speed limit of 120 km/h at 2 200 rpm, as well as being loaded to the brim, she consumed only 6.1-litres per 100 km.

Upon arrival, we met up with Dave, shook some hands and admired his fleet of houseboats moored along the Willow-lined banks of the Vaal River. While we waited, Dave’s friendly staff prepared our two crafts, Coot and Riet Reier, aptly named after the birdlife which inhabits the area.

Toyota RAV4 2.2 Turbo-Diesel VX parked alongside houseboats

Our crafts were stocked with everything we could ever need on such a trip. Dave supplied us with mouth-watering meal hampers, wine, charcoal for our braai, 50-litres of fuel and even a couple of fishing rods and tackle, to make our experience as memorable as possible. While we anxiously waited to board our crafts, Dave explained that Old Willow No.7 Houseboat Charters are exclusively approved commercial operators of the new LeisureLiner houseboats made by Knysna Leisure Craft.

“We also have a strong affiliation with Lightley’s Holiday Houseboats on the Knysna Lagoon, which means that we can draw on years of valuable houseboat charter experience,” said Dave.

Some say a weekend on the water is worth two on the land. I’d be keen to agree as I was overwhelmed by a sense of freedom while setting foot on these comfortable houseboats. With the wild river banks of the Vaal beckoning, our excitement grew.

Exploring the Vaal

Waiting for Dave’s capable assistant, Cindy, to conclude the briefing of the houseboat’s safety procedures, I was beginning to anticipate the prospect of captaining my own craft.

Equipped with a quick course in river safety and our sense of adventure, we set off to explore only a small length of the vast 55km of Vaal River stretching out in front of us. With one turn of the key, our puttering, yet reliable 40 HP Yamaha motor started rumbling and we commenced our exploration.

Because Old Willow prohibits travel after sunset and it was now late in the afternoon, we chose the nearest anchor spot – one of many found along the banks of the river, to settle ourselves before nightfall. It quickly became apparent that these houseboats are leisure liners, not racing boats! Travelling at a GPS top speed of 13km/h, it took us nearly 20 minutes to reach our spot – just three kilometres away.

But that’s the whole point of a houseboat experience. There is no rush to get anywhere – and aren’t you supposed to take it slow and easy on holiday anyway? Travelling at a calm but steady pace makes it a lot easier to enjoy the picturesque surroundings of the untamed Vaal River.

You’ll find yourself grabbing the binoculars at every opportunity. On the Vaal, it’s easy to spot a gaggle of Egyptian Geese flapping their wings, a Riet Reier sitting calmly on a tree branch or a Cape Clawless Otter doing a spot of fishing for supper. Cruising along, we passed the renowned ‘Millionaires Bend’ and it’s obvious why it is so named. Luxurious mansions are scattered along the banks, some magnificent, some a tad ugly, but all very expensive. The Vaal is clearly a playground for South Africa’s rich and famous. And, while some may spend a fortune on homes like this, we had everything we needed on board and could take it with us wherever we went along the river.

If idling along doesn’t grab you, there are plenty of activities along the banks. You could go waterskiing, wakeboarding or tubing at Watersports Unlimited at Riverside Sun. And for the kids, there are various attractions, including a water park, animal park, mini-golf and a climbing wall at the Emerald Casino Resort.

For refreshments or a bite to eat, various restaurants and pubs dot the river’s edge. Restaurants like Fish Eagle, Waterfront Country Lodge, The River Palace, Stonehaven-On-Vaal and the Pumphouse proved to be a perfect pit stop on dry land for a drink, meal or change of scenery.

During winter there aren’t many other boats on the water and you’ll feel you have the river all to yourself. However, according to Dave, “the summer holiday buzz is something to look forward to, both on the water and in the vibey restaurants along the banks”.

Up the creek

Overnight on your houseboat

As nightfall approached, we swung our boats into a little cove near the Stonehaven-on-Vaal resort. Thanks to satellite maps provided by Old Willow, we easily found our creek (dubbed Dawson’s Creek by our editor as its proper name kept eluding his memory).

We found the creek off the main river, with reed banks and trees sheltering it from the wind. The river’s wildlife inhabitants – birds, frogs and fish – all seemed to provide a welcoming tune. So we anchored our boats, tied them together and dropped our rods into the water, knowing that we’d found a gem of a mooring spot. As the rays of the sun slowly started to set on the horizon, boaters who’d been enjoying sundowners on a ferry and a few jetskiers powered up their engines to get home before dark. As they left, things became blissfully quiet. Everything we needed for the next 24 hours was on board and we looked forward to a peaceful night on the houseboat.

We cast our lines in the hope of pulling a few carp or maybe even a barbell or yellowfish, but to no avail. We were told the Vaal is home to plenty of fish and this was evident in the way they jumped all around us. But either our lack of patience, incorrect bait or the fact that the fish were a tad cleverer than us meant we did not pull even one from the water.

Nonetheless, nothing beats relaxing on the outside deck of the houseboat. While sipping on a glass of wine (or O. B.’s for the cold!) you watch as the Weber’s charcoal braai slightly illuminates your surroundings. We had brought an acoustic guitar along to play tender melodies and slowly unwind while listening to the soft sounds of other passengers plucking away at the six-stringer.

We couldn’t help but reminisce about the good old days as songs from Dire Straits, The Eagles and Credence Clearwater Revival strummed from the guitar. And in no time, our steaks, (provided to us by Old Willow) were on the coals and cooked to perfection. We soon felt the chill of the mid-winter’s evening creeping in, but remained outside and basked in the tranquillity of our surroundings.

The gentle strains of Pretty Belinda (“She lived in a boat house, down by the river, everyone called her pretty Belinda”) wafted across the water again and the song was certainly apt for the occasion. And for a few moments, I couldn’t help but feel I was a million miles from anywhere.

After a comfortable sleep, we drew open the curtains and gawked at the mist rising like steam from the dark Vaal River.

When it began swirling around the boat, it created an eerie scene, but a distant cry from a Hadeda broke the silence and life on the Vaal came back to life.

When it was time to depart the serenity of our floating home, breathtaking scenes of morning rays penetrating the mist and reflecting off the glass-like water were firmly in my memory. They make me long for another weekend of total tranquillity on Old Willow No.7’s Houseboats.

Big thanks to Dave Gardener and Lightley’s Holiday Houseboats’ owner Owen Groenestein for making our trip to the Vaal River a truly wonderful and memorable experience.

For more information and queries on Old Willow No.7 Houseboat Charters, please contact Dave or Laura Gardener on (016) 973 1729 or 083 391 4884. Alternatively, drop him an email on [email protected] for a delightful houseboat experience you’ll never be able to forget.

Travelling on the Vaal, you’d be amazed at the amount of expensive houses, luxurious accommodation and restaurants dotted along the banks. The 55km stretch of Vaal River features plenty of anchor spots to spend the night. The Vaal is also home to an array of exotic birds and wildlife, and fishing for carp, yellowfish or barbel is also a popular pastime. Nightfall on the houseboat is all about having a glass of wine, cooking your steak on the braai and enjoying a few sing-a-longs. Houseboat Haven

Old Willow No.7 has a large fleet of comfortable and spacious 26-ft, four-berth boats. There is a bedroom, a lounge and kitchen with stove, fridge and every kitchen utensil you’d need if you were in an episode of ‘In the kitchen with Nigella’. The dining table and chairs convert into an extra double bed and a neat bathroom area features a chemical toilet and hand-held shower option.

Houseboats on the Vaal

These houseboats are extremely social as you can braai on the lower deck or sunbathe from the rooftop (chairs and umbrella provided). A boat for two people, per night will cost from R695 (mid-week) and R995 per night on weekends. An additional charge of R150 is applicable per person if you have more than two people on board. This basically covers the cost of the extra meals.

A big thanks to Captain Charles and his crew for keeping our houseboats in tip top condition. Inexpensive Old Willow houseboats and a fuel-efficient Toyota RAV 4 made this holiday one of the most affordable of its kind.

Vaal Dam – Vaal Marina

A Step-by-Step Guide to SAILING

How to guides, how wind moves a boat.

A sail full of wind forms an airfoil and propels the boat with lift, the way a plane’s wing does (except across water, rather than into the air). The work of sailing is to position, or trim, the sails to maximize lift in the direction you want to go.

Sail Positions and Their Names

When you’re sailing, you use specific terms to describe the position of the sail — along with calling the left side of the boat port and the right side starboard . Check the following figure for the terms that indicate different sail positions.

image0.jpg

Basic Traffic Rules of the Waterway for Sailboats

Traffic rules prevent accidents on land — and on water. Just because you’re sailing on open water doesn’t mean you can disobey simple traffic rules. The rules of the water actually call for more consideration than rules of the asphalt, so bear the following conventions in mind as you sail:

Tiller or wheel?

Most sailboats longer than 30 feet (9 meters) are steered with a wheel, just like a car. Through a mechanical linkage, the wheel controls the position of your rudder. When moving forward, turn the wheel left and the boat goes to the left — and vice versa. You may think that this is stating the obvious, but you see why when you compare turning the wheel to the other way of steering a sailboat — with a tiller.

You steer most smaller sailboats by using a tiller. Using a tiller for the first time takes a bit of getting used to, because the boat turns the opposite direction you move the tiller. If you move the tiller to the left, the boat turns right; move the tiller right, and the boat goes left.

Steering a sailboat is also like a car in that turning becomes more efficient the faster the boat is going (and in the fact that you can’t steer when stopped). So when you’re going fast, you can turn the tiller or wheel less to achieve the same turning arc. To turn when you’re going slow, turn harder and keep the rudder over for a longer time.

For pure sailing pleasure, some sailers prefer a tiller on any boat up to, say, 40 feet (12 meters). Although a wheel takes up less cockpit space, it compromises the feel of the boat. Because of all the associated parts and connections, wheel steering has much more internal friction. A tiller directly connects you to the rudder, allowing you to feel the water as it flows below the boat, and for me, that sensitivity is preferable.

More info about Vaal River

The massive Vaal River is 1120 kms long,  perhaps  South Africa 's greatest river . This important river forms the border between Mpumalanga, Gauteng, the North West Province and the Free State.The source is in Mpumalanga, it then flows west and eventually joins the Orange River in the Northern Cape.

The Vaal river is the most popular and closest water sport and relaxation destination for  Gauteng, and is surrounded by lovely scenery. It provides the main water supply for Johannesburg and Pretoria, the main cities of Gauteng, and is the major source of irrigation for agriculture.

The main towns along the river include Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, Heidelberg, Sasolburg, Deneysville and Parys.

The scenic river provides the most popular leisure destination in Gauteng. There are Nature Reserves, dams, golf courses and facilities for watersports and adventure activities. Quad biking, fishing, hiking and abseiling are all provided.

Water Sports

Speed boats, canoes, jetskis, paddle boats and River ... Show more

Speed boats, canoes, jetskis, paddle boats and River Cruises are all available.

The hundreds of small islands in the river cause rapids. White river rafting is available all year, the best season being from November to January.

The Vredefort Dome near Parys, is where a gigantic meteor hit earth. It is the biggest meteor site geologists have ever found on the planet, twice the size of the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs. This enormous hissing fireball plunged into the earth, thankfully 2000 million years ago, and left an impact 300 kms wide. Hence it was declared a World Heritage Site.

The Vaal River flows through the dome, which nowadays is a tranquil sanctuary with many leisure activities and beautiful wild scenery. These include abseiling, canoeing, 4x4 trails, horse riding, white river rafting and more.

The Vaal Meander

For the huge tourist demand many art and craft and farmers markets are along the way, on the Vaal Meander.  There are also events like air shows and music festivals. For shopping there is the upmarket River Square and the Vaal Mall Centre and many more in the small towns.

Where to Eat

There are numerous pubs, restaurants, country bistros, fast food outlets and cafes all along the small towns along the river.

Where to Stay

Expensive riverfront houses line the banks of the Vaal.

There are luxury hotels, lovely guest houses ranging from 5 star to rustic, b&b’s, game lodges, country retreats, conference centres and even houseboats.

The National Sea Rescue has more boats on the river and dam than anywhere else in the country. The dam alone has 880 kms of shoreline and hosts international powerboat races.

Access is by road. The N1, N3 and R57 all provide easy access to the river.

Unless exploring with a tour operator it is best to hire a car. Otherwise many Gauteng residents fly there in helicopters.

Moscow boat trip.

PRICE REQUEST>>>

Moscow is a large city and in order to see many landmarks, it necessitates travelling by car. But it is not that easy to negotiate the traffic jams, road blocks, one-way systems that defy logic. The atmosphere is possibly the strongest deterrent of all, with smells of diesel and gasoline and general automotive fumes. An alternative is to take a boat trip on the Moskva River , the kind of transport that has been used since ancient times and still popular with the tourists today.

These Moscow River boat trips offer a great opportunity to see many of the city's most interesting sights, while enjoying a quiet and relaxing ride. The water is not commonly used as a method of discovering many of the city’s sights and secluded places.

As a result, we strongly recommend this kind of method to you! Join us on a boat trip on the Moskva River to see the city from another view-point. Our guide will accompany you and give you explanations of the various sights and places during the trip. From the river-front you will see the imposing towers and walls of Kremlin , the Cathedral of Christ the Savior with your own eyes, a huge and, perhaps, somewhat formidable statue on a ship dedicated to Peter the Great, House of Artists, the famous Gorky Park amusement park of the Soviet era, St. Andrew’s Monastery, the massive Stalin-style building of Moscow State University, which is one of the seven-sisters. These are the "wedding-cake" styled buildings that "ring" the center of Moscow.

You may choose to sit inside or out on-deck depending on your preference. You may also, if you wish, visit the luxurious onboard restaurant with Russian and Mediterranean cuisine prepared qualified chiefs.

Inside the restaurant you will see Italian glass windows, wonderful marble floors and crystal chandeliers that all help create a luxurious atmosphere. To make your stay onboard even more pleasant jazz music will float through the air-waves as you are moving through the water-waves of the Moscow River .

WHAT WE OFFER:

1. Entrance tickets for the Boat trip on the Moscow river.

We can provide you entrance tickets for the Boat trip or reserve them for your convenience in advance!

2. Boat trip on the Moscow river with a guide.

Our guide will accompany you and give you explanations of the various sights and places during the trip. You will see Moscow from unusual side and our professional tour guides will tell you the most interesting and exciting stories about Moscow city !

3. Boat and ship rent.

Our company offers you to rent boats of different types for different purposes.

We offer boats:

- For any number of people. - For any hours (from hour). - Any route on Moscow river.

Note: These tours are only available during the warmer weather between the months of May & October, as the river is either partially or sometimes completely frozen over in winter.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Two tour boat operators were charged in the deaths of a 7-year-old boy and his aunt who were killed in 2022 when their speeding, overcrowded ship capsized in the Hudson River off Manhattan.

Richard Cruz, 32, and Jaime Pinilla Gomez, 35, were arrested Thursday in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and face up to 10 years behind bars on one count of misconduct and neglect of a ship officer resulting in death, according to federal prosecutors.

Gomez was operating the 24-foot Yamaha AR-240 jet boat named Stimulus Money on July 12, 2022, when it flipped and ejected all 13 passengers into the water off the coast of the Big Apple.

Cruz had just bought the vessel three months earlier, and the boat tour had not been certified or credentialed by the US Coast Guard.

The duo had exceeded the vessel’s maximum allowable capacity and Gomez was recklessly operating the boat at a “high rate of speed” during a Small Craft Advisory in high winds and heavy seas, prosecutors said.

Gomez, an “insufficiently experienced mariner,” had “rapidly accelerated” one of the boat’s engines before the craft capsized, and “failed to properly wear a safety device that should be worn around the pilot’s wrist or life vest,” a failure that allowed the vessel to keep running even after the captain was ejected, according to a press release.

As ferries and emergency vessels swarmed the disaster scene near Pier 84, NYPD and FDNY divers found young Julian Vasquez and his aunt Lindelia Vasquez trapped under the boat and unconscious.

Lindelia Vasquez,

Officials ruled the pair — who had been visiting New York from Florida and Colombia — had drowned.

“Federal regulations and safety protocols exist to ensure that captains and operators of commercial vessels keep passengers safe,” said US Attorney Damian Williams.

“The defendants allegedly flouted those regulations, recklessly disregarded safety protocols, operated the vessel at an unsafe speed in hazardous conditions, and overloaded the vessel with too many passengers onboard.  And the result was tragic — a young boy and a woman were trapped under the vessel and drowned after the vessel capsized.”

Depending on the itinerary and duration of the Moscow River boat trip, the tour can be 3 or 5 hours.

Highlights of the tour

  • St Basil’s Cathedral;
  • Stalin skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya (Tinkers) embankment;
  • The Kremlin;
  • “House on the Embankment” Stalin skyscraper;
  • Monument to Peter I;
  • The Central House of Artists;
  • Christ the Savior Cathedral;
  • Gorky Park;
  • Moscow State University;
  • Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Luzhniki stadium;
  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
