2023 New Year's Eve Extravaganza: Over 100 Superyachts Gather in St Barts

As the countdown to 2024 began, the glamorous harbor of Gustavia once again became the epicenter of high-end St Barts New Year’s Eve celebrations. The Caribbean island, known for its French flair and scenic beauty, hosted a fleet of over 100 luxurious superyachts in port and out in the bay. As usual, it turned out to be an unforgettable night of festivities, with high-profile guests and celebrities making their appearances in this exclusive destination.

Playing host to an outstanding fleet of visiting luxury charter yachts , Gustavia Harbor is the main hub of festivities with its 60 coveted berths and ample anchorage in the bay. Renowned as being one of the most exciting times of the year to embark on a St Barts yacht charter , charter guests can indulge in iconic parties with world-class DJs, mingle with celebrities, and spectate the popular New Year's Eve Regatta.  

Setting the sky alight with an impressive display of fireworks, the party scene around Gustavia is nothing short of spectacular. Whether you're with friends and family or entertaining clients on a corporate charter , the captivating entertainment spreads from deck to shore with many lively bars and restaurants plus a myriad of motor yacht mixers.

Showcasing the high-end appeal of the annual celebrations for visiting Caribbean yacht charters , the 2023 event witnessed the arrival of some truly sensational motor yachts including the likes of the captivating 115m (377ft) charter yacht AHPO . Namely, the largest private yacht charter to be seen in the vicinity of the New Year's celebrations, this iconic Lurssen charter yacht  is a sight to behold with her foredeck helipad, extensive beach club, and indulgent owner's duplex.

Lurssen extended its reach around the harbor with striking 97m (318ft) motor yacht CARINTHIA VII , 95m (312ft) MADSUMMER  and 91m (299ft) charter yacht Lady Lara  also in attendance.

Causing a stir around Fort Karl and Gustavia, multi-award-winning 88m (289ft)  charter yacht PROJECT X from the yard of Golden Yachts  made an appearance for the festivities and showcased her own refit from 2022, as well as 73m (238ft)  motor yacht Quantum of Solace  from Turquoise Yachts . 

A masterpiece in her own right, 75m (247ft)  charter yacht KENSHO continues to impress onlookers wherever she goes, and the New Year celebrations in St Barts were no exception. Recently picking up another award for Best Interior Design in the Motor Yachts 500GT and Above category at the 2023 Boat International Design & Innovation Awards, KENSHO's striking blue hull remains an extraordinary asset to the Admiral Yachts fleet of charter yachts and she certainly made a lasting impression during her latest visit to the waters surrounding the Leeward Islands .

24 sailing yachts competing in the 2023 St Barths Bucket

Anticipation is building for the 2023 St Barths Bucket as the island prepares to welcome the world's racing elite to the port of Gustavia for the highlight of the big boat racing calendar. An impressive lineup of over 20 newcomers and veteran participants are set to compete across three days from 16-19 March, each vying for the top prize...

Action is a regular on the regatta circuit, which comes as no surprise given her Dutch pedigree with Royal Huisman and Dykstra Naval Architects behind her build and design. Very few details are known about this 37.3-metre sailing yacht but her racing record speaks volumes. She won the 2022 Superyacht Challenge Antigua and the crew will have gotten in some decent practice at this year's edition in the week leading up to the St Barths Bucket. After coming fourth in her class last year, she will be back with a vengeance.

The 49.8-metre ketch-rigged Almyra II was delivered in 2000 by Perini Navi as the second in the shipyard's popular 50-metre series of sailing yachts. Her two masts stand 51- and 40 metres tall, respectively, and fly a total of 1,289 square metres of sail. Her steel hull provides exceptional stability with the benefit of Perini's unique “single-handed sails control” concept, first implemented by Fabio Perini.

The two-masted schooner Athos recently emerged from a full-scale refit at Huisfit with a 1.3-metre extension to her now 63.2-metre LOA. Work also included the addition of new booms, new sails, and carbon rigging to improve sail management and performance, all of which will be put to the test at the 2023 St Barths Bucket. The vessel was originally delivered by Holland Jachtbouw in 2010, based on a design by Hoek Design, and remains the shipyard's flagship build. She is easy to spot heeled over thanks to her green underside and red bootstripe.

The 27.6-metre Bequia was built in the US by Brooklin Boat Yard and delivered in 2009. Ketch rigged with over 1,000 square metres of sail, she was designed by Stephens Waring & White , who also completed the naval architecture and designed the interior. Just last year, Bequia was crowned the overall winner of Division Two at the Safe Harbor Race Weekend in Rhode Island.

The 43-metre sailing yacht Columbia was delivered in 2014 by Eastern Shipbuilding as a replica of the 1923 fishing schooner by the same name. The owner discovered the original line drawings of William Starling Burgess in a Massachusetts maritime museum and took the opportunity to fulfil a lifelong dream of bringing a piece of maritime history back to life. Her 930-square-metre rig and sail plan is a close copy of the original Columbia , except for the addition of hydraulic winches to ease handling. Her nine sails, including a 315-square-metre mainsail, are made of a synthetic material called Oceanus treated to look and behave like Egyptian cotton, and the lines are made of Dacron instead of manila. The new Columbia can reach 17 knots under sail.

New Zealand yard Fitzroy Yachts launched Gitana in 2009, after which the 45-metre sloop was nominated for Best Sailing Yacht in her size category at the 2010 World Superyacht Awards thanks to the design efforts of Dubois Naval Architects . She was delivered as Salperton IV to a serial sailing yacht owner, the fourth in the Salperton dynasty, and immediately made her debut on the big boat racing circuit. She has been racing ever since.

Delivered in 2013 by Baltic Yachts , the 33-metre Inukshuk won the coveted Sailing Yacht of the Year award at the 2014 World Superyacht Awards. Designed by German Frers , who also completed the naval architecture, this lightweight sloop offers fast and efficient sailing capabilities thanks to her telescopic keel, favourable power-to-weight ratio and carbon rig and rigging. 

One of two Swan 115 models, Nautor Swan specifically tailored the 2018 delivery JASI (formerly Odin ) with racing in mind. The hull shape, flush deck, sailing systems, mast and keel were all designed by the yard to provide a competitive edge in world-class regattas such as the Bucket. The 35-metre sailing yacht features the design talents of German Frers with added Code Zero cableless technology making sails lighter and easier to handle. JASI has previously competed in the 2022 Les Voiles de Saint Tropez Maxi Week. 

Kawil started life in America at the Derecktor Shipyard before graduating onto the superyacht regatta circuit. Designed by Sparkman & Stephens , the sailing yacht claimed victory at the New Zealand Millenium Cup regatta in 2020 and, after winning her class at the St Barths Bucket in 2022, is returning to defend her title at this year's competition. At 34-metres LOA, she is one of the smaller competitors in this year's lineup but should not be underestimated. 

Lot 99 was delivered in 2017 as the first of Nautor Swan 's Swan 95 range of 28.8-metre sailing yachts, built with a lightweight carbon fibre-foam sandwich hull. Both the design and naval architecture were completed by German Frers , with a lifting keel that reduces the yacht's draught from 5.5 metres to 3.3 metres and twin rudders for fingertip steering and manoeuvrability.

Italian shipyard Perini Navi introduced a number of innovations for its ninth 56-metre model that separate Melek from her sisterships. The yacht features an innovative foredeck with a built-in tender garage and an aerodynamic superstructure optimised for better navigation performance. Delivered in 2010, Melek continues to turn heads owing to her grey-chrome exterior by Ron Holland Design .

The 50-metre Meraki is the product of a Dutch power duo Vitters and Hoek Design and was commissioned by her owner especially for racing. The yacht was designed with a slight tumblehome to ensure an optimum heeling angle, as well as a reduced freeboard and low-profile deckhouses for exceptional visibility at the helm. She came second in her class at the 2022 St Barths Bucket, the first to be held since Meraki 's delivery in 2020, and is returning to cinch that number one spot.

Nakupenda is a 33-metre sloop built by Danish Yachts in Denmark and delivered in 2006. She was designed inside and out by Ted Fontaine and will be returning to the St Barths Bucket to beat her third-place title in her class in 2022.

Perseverance 1

This 40-metre sloop from Baltic Yachts , Perseverance I , combines traditional exterior lines with exceptional sailing performance. Designed by Dykstra Naval Architects , the yacht is equipped with state-of-the-art hybrid propulsion technology for lower energy consumption, which also contributed to her winning Sailing Yacht of the Year at the 2022 World Superyacht Awards. With her advanced carbon-fibre construction and oversized rig, Perseverance 1 can easily sail at full speed in as little as 10 knots of wind.

Alloy Yachts and Dubois Naval Architects joined forces to deliver a performance-oriented sailing yacht, the 52-metre Prana , in 2006. The custom sloop features a racing-style hull, as well as an optimised flybridge offering greater deck space and improved functionality. Prana also carries the largest set of sails from Doyle Sails in New Zealand, including an asymmetric gennaker measuring 2,227 square metres. 

The multi-award-winning ketch-rigged sailing yacht Q (formerly Mondango II ) was custom-built by Alloy Yachts in 2008, with additional refits in 2014 and 2016 to keep her in top racing condition. Q has become a familiar face on the regatta circuit, appearing at numerous competitions such as the 2017 Loro Piana Caribbean Regatta and the Superyacht Cup Palma in 2018.

Ranger is a 41.6-metre replica of an original J Class yacht created for the 1937 America’s Cup. Known as 'The Super J', the original  Ranger famously beat Endeavour II in the Cup and won all but two of the other 33 races in which she competed that year. The new Ranger was the first J Class yacht to be built since their heyday in the 1930s, with the design optimised by Dykstra Naval Architects. She features a steel hull – unlike subsequent modern Js – and was delivered by Danish Yachts in 2003 to an American owner.

Red Dragon is a 51.7-metre aluminium fast cruising sloop built by Alloy Yachts in 2008. She was designed by Dubois Naval Architects – who also completed the naval architecture – and fitted with a 62.5-metre high modulus carbon fibre main mast, rig and boom, as well as custom winches by Alloy Yachts. Sporting a new suite of Doyle ICE sails, she is ready to race.

A veteran of the regatta circuit, the 33-metre Sunleigh has competed in a number of races such as the 2017 and 2019 editions of the Candy Store Cup, where she appeared alongside the 37-metre Royal Huisman Action and the 42-metre J Class yacht Ranger . Sunleigh was delivered in 2002 by Dutch yard Jongert with an exterior design from Tony Castro and interiors by Giugiaro Design .

The 29-metre sailing yacht Symmetry was delivered by New Zealand yard Yachting Developments in 2004 and later refitted in 2014. Whisper was built in the Netherlands by Holland Jachtbouw and delivered in 2003 to her owner, American racing royalty Hap Fauth, as his "forever boat". While his Maxi 72 Belle Mente tackles the high-performance regattas, Whisper offers the best of both worlds. The 35-metre sailing yacht was designed by Ted Fontaine and won her class at the St Barths Bucket in 2018. 

True to her name, the 33-metre WinWin is a seasoned racing champion from Baltic Yachts with wins at the 2016 Superyacht Cup, as well as a three-year streak of victories at the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Superyacht Cup Palma. A 7.9-metre beam at the transom and low displacement mean she is fast off the wind and in light airs and can be handled by a crew of four thanks to her design by Javier Jaudenes . In 12 to 13 knots true wind, she sits comfortably at 11.2 knots close-hauled; off the wind flying the smaller top-down furling kite in 26 knots of wind, she canters along at 18.5 knots. She has been designed to take a square-topped racing main and has a bolt-on bowsprit that will allow for more powerful kites.

The 48-metre Wisp from Royal Huisman is widely considered to be one of Andre Hoek ’s most beautiful designs and was awarded a World Superyacht Award in 2015 for Best Sailing Yacht above 45 metres. Wisp was recognised for her masterful blend of form and function, having landed a podium finish in that year’s Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta. At 100 degrees apparent wind, she can zip along at 12 knots, scooting to 14 knots in the puffs, while the hull handles the quartering swell with ease.

A Virginia couple is feared dead after three escaped prisoners stole their docked yacht from a Caribbean marina and fled to another island.

Ralph Hendry and his wife Kathy Brandel, who live on their yacht, Simplicity, were last seen by a boating neighbor on Sunday afternoon in St. George’s on the island nation of Grenada, as they headed to a restaurant.

The pair live on their boat during the winter and arrived on the island two weeks prior, intending to stay another week before they went missing.

“They went into town [on Sunday] to have a little bite and to walk back,” Hendry’s sister Suellen Desmarais  told WPTV-Tampa . “Somehow Ralph crossed paths in this teeny tiny town with these three men. What happened after that, we’re not sure.”

‘This was their whole life,” she added. “They didn’t own another home; they didn’t own cars; they owned Simplicity.”

‘Ralph and Kathy are the kindest people in the entire world, and I just can’t understand how a tragedy like this could happen to people as kind and nice as them.”

Hendry and Brandel have sailed the same route for the past few years, from Virginia to Massachusetts before heading down to Florida to visit Desmarais, and eventually to the Caribbean where they would island hop,  according to ABC News.

They went missing the same day that three fugitives, Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 19, and Abita Stanislaus, 25, escaped the South St. George Police Station. The escapees then made their way to the marina, where they fled to another Caribbean island, authorities said.

They were subsequently captured on Wednesday in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“The RGPF is currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process,” the Royal Grenada Police Force said in a press release.

“It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens.”

The Simplicity was recovered by authorities after a Good Samaritan found it anchored off of a St. Vincent beach. When they boarded, they discovered the boat had been ransacked and “found evidence of apparent violence.”

Authorities spotted bloodstains in the interior but no sign of the couple,  according to People magazine .

Desmarais, however, is holding out hope the couple is still alive.

“It feels made up, and I just can’t comprehend why someone would do this?” she said. “Why didn’t someone just take the boat?

‘What happened in Grenada was a perfect storm. It was a perfect tragedy of a perfect storm of a perfect love story.”

She also  told Fox 5 DC,  “Why would I presume anyone is dead with no body and DNA? I want to remain positive. I want to believe that they are alive,”

Hendry and Brandel’s two children and Hendry’s nephew traveled to St. Vincent and the Grenadines to join the search for the couple on Friday, according to reports.

“This investigation is in its infancy stage and the RGPF have dispatched a team of senior investigators and a forensic specialist to St. Vincent in furtherance of this investigation,” the RGPF said.

American couple missing in Caribbean after fugitives allegedly steal their yacht: Police

Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel were last seen in Grenada, family member said.

An American couple has gone missing in the Caribbean after three escaped prisoners allegedly used their yacht to island hop before getting recaptured by authorities, according to investigators.

Ralph Hendry and his wife Kathy Brandel disappeared from their yacht, Simplicity, which was docked in the waters of the southern Caribbean nation of Grenada, Hendry's sister, Suellen Desmarais, told ABC News.

Police have not confirmed the identity and nationality of the couple but are investigating the incident.

Hendry and Brandel were last seen alive by their boating neighbor at the dock on Sunday afternoon, according to Desmarais. The neighbor said he saw the couple entering a restaurant, Desmarais said.

"That man went to bed that night and he looked over and Simplicity was there when he went to bed," but when the neighbor "got up at 6:30 a.m. on Monday morning, Simplicity was gone," she told ABC News.

Desmarais said the couple had been in Grenada for about two weeks, and their yacht left the island a week earlier than planned.

The Royal Grenada Police Force said the yacht allegedly became the target of three alleged criminals, Ron Mitchell, Trevon Robertson and Abita Stanislaus, all from St. Andrew, Grenada, who escaped from a police station after they were arrested on Sunday.

They were charged jointly with robbery with violence before their escape, police said. Mitchell was also charged with rape, attempted rape and indecent assault, according to investigators.

All three fugitives allegedly managed to make their way to a neighboring Caribbean country using the yacht, but they were caught by police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday, according to authorities.

Grenada Police said they are "currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process."

The Salty Dawg Sailing Association, a sailing association that the couple belonged to, said in a statement a good Samaritan boarded the yacht when anchored and abandoned off a St. Vincent beach and contacted both them and the Coast Guard when he found no one inside.

The good Samaritan allegedly "found evidence of apparent violence," according to the association.

"I have spoken to the families and have offered our deepest condolences and our assistance in any way possible. In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this," Bob Osborn, SDSA's president, said in a statement Friday evening.

The investigation is ongoing.

The couple, who lived on the boat, had been sailing the same route for a number of years, Desmarais said. That route started in Virginia, followed by a stop in Massachusetts, then to Florida to see Desmarais and her family, before heading south to island hop in the Caribbean.

Hendry and Brandel's two children and Desmarais' son traveled to St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday to join the search.

"Their love for life and island people, they're good, basic people," Desmarais said. "Until they find a body, they're still alive."

St. Cloud mayor's marathon town hall goes 24 hours

ST. CLOUD — Before Dave Kleis was elected mayor, he promised voters two things: that he would usher in the return of paddle boats to a local lake after budget cuts and host weekly town hall meetings.

The paddle boats were back on Lake George that first spring and now — 19 years later — Kleis is nearing his 1,000th town hall.

He's met with constituents on buses, including his own small "mobile town hall " bus that traveled around town with a large photo of his face plastered to the side until the transmission went out. He's meandered through city parks with folks. And he's even conducted a town hall while sitting atop an exercise bike when the local YMCA opened.

But his 975th town hall this weekend was among the most unusual: an ambitious meeting that started at 12:01 a.m. Saturday and ran for 24 hours.

The offbeat occasion doesn't seem too unusual for Kleis, who is known for hosting other engagement events like "dinners with strangers" at his house where he serves chili and ice cream cake to area residents with the only stipulation that he doesn't already know the guests. But it feels uncommon in an era when many politicians seem hesitant to make themselves available to constituents.

"I didn't know anyone who actually did that," St. Cloud resident Max Stueven said of the daylong town hall. "I wanted to see if he was actually here."

Kleis pointed to Stueven as an example of why he planned the off-hours town hall. Stueven works third watch — from about 2 to 10 p.m. — at St. Cloud prison and hasn't been able to attend daytime town halls.

"Normally I wouldn't be able to come to something like this. I'm either with my kids or sleeping," he said at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. "I happened to be getting off work and came over."

The marathon town hall was actually Kleis' second 24-hour town hall. His first, more than a decade ago, ran from midmorning to midmorning. For Saturday's town hall, Kleis started at midnight as a way to front-end the event with what he expected to be the quietest — and maybe most boring — hours. He planned to run up and down nearby stairs if he started to feel drowsy, he said.

"I'm wide awake. I feel great," Kleis said shortly after midnight while sipping tea in the City Hall atrium.

The first guest popped in for a short visit just after 1 a.m. and a steady stream of folks started stopping by at about 4 a.m. By the end of the event, 85 people had come: Some were friends or colleagues who brought snacks but many were residents who had never met the mayor.

"We were out on our scooters. We got them running for the first time of the year," said Jacob Ehrlichman of St. Cloud, who visited with two friends after seeing a social media post about the town hall. "We just dropped in — and there he is."

Ehrlichman hadn't met Kleis but was curious to hear the mayor's thoughts on housing and possibly increasing density to allow for more duplexes in the city.

Topics throughout the day varied widely: Some visitors wants to talk about specific projects, such as plans to renovate a city-owned building on the east side to allow for a community policing outpost similar to the 'COP House' on the city's south side. Others were curious about Kleis' thoughts on immigration (not the city's role, he said), how to better partner with neighboring cities in terms of services (something he's in favor of) and whether he plans to run for a sixth term as mayor in November (he's waiting until closer to the filing period in May to decide).

"I think campaign seasons are way too long at it is," he said. "I don't announce until filing because it doesn't change how I serve."

Kleis, 60, is the city's longest-serving mayor. First elected in 2005, he was re-elected while running unopposed in 2008, 2012 and 2016. In the last election, Kleis defeated a challenger with more than 63% of the vote. He also served in the Minnesota Senate from 1995 to 2005.

During his mayoral tenure, the town halls have ranged from as few as one person to as many as 500 people. The largest gathering was in 2010 after anti-Islamic cartoons and swastikas were found around town. But most town halls have just a few people — and that's intentional: "If 20 people come, maybe only three or four speak anyways. But if it's a smaller group, more people feel comfortable talking," he said.

Kleis said about 90% of people who attend his weekly meet-ups tell him they've never been to any type of town hall before.

"The goal is the access," he said. "This is an avenue for someone to have a conversation. If you don't have town halls frequently, things fester."

As the clock struck midnight for a second time this weekend, Kleis reflected on the long day (and night). He was happy with the turnout and said the constant stream of guests helped him stay awake without needing coffee.

He also learned something new about what it's like to spend time at City Hall in the wee hours of the night: The motion sensor lights shut off every three minutes, forcing him to stand up, take a few steps and wave his arms around.

"This is good exercise," he said with a chuckle.
