Two insurers likely to be hit hardest by a $700m claim for a super yacht at Lurssen shipyard last month have issued profit warnings, indicating the vessel has been declared a constructive total loss.

Brand new 52-metre yacht Seven Sins by Sanlorenzo

Launched in 2017, semi-custom 52-metre Seven Sins is the new flagship superyacht by the highly renowned Sanlorenzo shipyard, one of the most successful yards in Italy, with its innovations and build quality. Seven Sins is a part of the yard’s 52Steel range, combining refined elegance with technical innovation under 500GT. 52-metre superyacht Seven Sins is a World Superyacht Award Winner in 2018 and is the largest yacht ever built by Sanlorenzo, with features expected from 62-metre, which makes her unique in her size. She is a rare opportunity to own a brand new 2017 launch and already has proven charter record, offering excellent charter potential for a new owner.

She boasts design by Officina Italiana, with outstanding indoor and outdoor living spaces. Clever use of glass throughout includes an innovative aft area, featuring a glass bottom swimming pool on the main deck which allows light to filter down to a huge beach club area below. The beach club itself is a vast entertainment and relaxation space with fold-down side balconies and a fully equipped gym & sauna. Accommodation on board is for 10 guests in 4 double and 1 twin rooms, as well as crew quarters for 11 people.

Nobiskrug 80-meter hybrid superyacht project to be unveiled in Monaco

The next Nobiskrug advances state of the art with new technology features reflecting Owner’s focus on minimizing environmental impact. Nobiskrug’s Project 790 is one of the first yachts built under the new strict IMO Tier III emissions regulations. The name and visionary design of the 80-meter hybrid superyacht will be unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Less than a year away from completion, Nobiskrug’s Project 790 will be one of the first yachts built under the new IMO Tier III low emissions regulations with an array of first-of-their-kind technology features and engineering advances that reflect the Owner’s desire to create an experience as breath-taking as the seas it explores. For example, the Owner understood the significant efficiency, environmental and comfort advantages of Electric Pod propulsion using a DC bus system with both batteries and variable speed Diesel-Electric generators. Among the other significant efforts taken to protect the environment: the use of solar panels and a large battery storage system allows the vessel to operate for a limited time with no internal combustion engines operating; an electric pod propulsion combined with a dynamic positioning system can hold position without dropping anchor to protect sensitive sea floor; waste water can be re-used as technical water.

In addition to environmental and advanced technology unprecedented in this class of vessel, the 80-meter superyacht’s distinctive exterior created by Gregory C. Marshall Studio features large architectural windows and noticeable design elements that create a distinctly remarkable profile. The composite superstructure and the special use of large custom and curved glass – the highest ratio of glass used to date in this size category – further differentiates this striking superyacht. Her exceptional interior was designed by the passionate and creative team at Reymond Langton Design – a studio that has been involved in the exterior styling and interior design of many award-winning superyachts. The design model of Project 790 as well as her name will be unveiled at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Richard Branson sells 32m Necker Belle

Richard Branson, the prolific British billionaire and mastermind behind the Virgin brand, has now sold his 32-meter catamaran, Necker Belle at an asking price of $3,000,000. This follows her being listed for sale in 2014 asking €8.5 million. Launched in 2003 by CMN, the 32-meter catamaran features a total of 4 cabins for a maximum of 10 guests. Stretching over a beam of 14 meters, the yacht was refitted in 2009. Powered by Caterpillar engines, she could reach a top speed of 20 knots.

Lately part of Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition collection, Necker Belle was available for charter from $60,000 per week amongst other assets such as his private Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands where she was often based or his estate in Switzerland.

Branson, a billionaire since the 1990s, purchased the catamaran in 2009, when she was named Lady Barberetta, at an asking price of £5.3 million, before renaming her to Necker Belle, after his island in the British Virgin Islands. In 1986, Branson had broken the record for a Transatlantic crossing on a motor yacht on the Virgin Atlantic Challenger 2.

Floating dock fire - a sad day for Lürssen

One of the german shipyard’s floating docks caught fire in the early morning of 14 september….

Image for article Floating dock fire - a sad day for Lürssen

We have published verbatim a statement issued this morning by Lürssen:

'In the early morning at approximately 02:00 a fire broke out in the floating dock of the Fr. Lürssen Shipyard in Bremen-Aumund and onboard the yacht within it. The emergency procedures commenced immediately, in the course of which the persons still working on board were evacuated and examined with respect to possible smoke intoxication and the fire fighting department and emergency response teams were alarmed.

Additionally the whole premises were evacuated. Currently, no casualties are known. At the moment, 110 fire fighters and rescuers are onsite, also supported by a team of the Jos. L. Meyer shipyard. Further buildings or other ships were not affected. No statement can be made so far towards the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.'

SuperyachtNews will stay abreast of the developments and bring any more facts and updates as and when they become clear. We recognise this is a very sad day for Lürssen and respect the yard's difficult situation.

Update: 15 September

As of this morning (15th September), the fire has been under control. According to the fire department, there is no further danger of the fire spreading, although fire suppression measures will continue for the time being. Currently, about 180 fire fighters of the Bremen fire departments and of the surrounding counties as well as the fire department of the Jos. L. Meyer Shipyard are on duty, but are being gradually released. We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the tireless efforts and professional response of all those involved, including the fire service, police, the technical support unit, and our own employees. Currently no statement can be made at this stage as to the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.

A link (in german) about this sad story: https://www.weser-kurier.de/region/...-papenburger-meyerwerft-an-_arid,1767870.html According to DrDuu and other locals, it might be Project Sassi. From the description I've read somewhere else, it sounds really bad (3 decks went on fire).

Smoke damage, water damage. Even if the metalwork is left (which by the heat transferred to the dock is unlikely) no owner will accept it as a newbuild.

She was supposed to launch this year if I am not mistaken which makes it even more tragic. The fire is now under control with 170 firefighter on scene and also from the Meyer Werft. Read about concerns that the roof of the dock might collapse so first investigations might take more time

This a tragic event not for Lurssen alone but also yacht enthusiasts like us. I'm no sure if and when or ever will Lurssen put a press release regarding the damage, but safe to assume the project in there is a total loss after 48 hour blaze. Lets also remember Lurssen works like a swiss watch one project launches and the next day the other one goes in bare. I am pretty sure the shed itself is a total loss where wii Lurssen complete its other projects? Lets just say it was very fortunate they purchased blohm & voss, they can now use their facilities. Needless to say this unfortunate event will sput a hamper on Lurssen deliveries for a long period, I'd love to know what others on this forum think about the near future of Lurssen.
The dock at blohm and Voss housed Eclipse. They will use that 7nless something bigger is coming. I‘m no insurance expert but I would imagine that is the big question. The owner has probably already paid a lot towards the build. He now wants his boat or a replacement until a new one is built. All the subcontractors and suppliers have probably only been partly paid. The owners build team needs to be compensated as do any crew already hired. Try to pick the bones out of that mess as an insurance company stalls depending on the cause. Why does a boat that’s worth a few hundred million not have a permanent fire watch on board? Thank god it happened at night when less people were on board. This could change the way yachts are allowed to be built depending on the cause.

Don’t know if it’s true but I read somewhere the yacht was supposed to come out in a month. Delivery probably next summer then. That means providing the owner with a replacement for a couple of years if this incident doesn’t sour the relationship completely. How do you even insure against having to provide a replacement yacht? Depending on where the fire started there might not have been anyone working in the area. Then they should have a fire watch or alarm system covering all areas. Having seen smaller builds, the fire would get so big so quick because these yachts are covered in highly flammable materials, teak, composites, epoxy, paint. They are then built in a big plastic tent which if they have been painting or sanding, is full of solvent or dust. I don’t know how you could stop anything more than a local fire over 100+ meters. In my youth, I worked security on large yachts during refits. We did a fire watch round every two hours through every room. They were no where near the size or value we are talking here
I’m still a little upset I was really looking forward to seeing her finished. Eventually they will have to tow her out of the shed and maybe then we will get a chance to see her. Overall, Insurance and everything else this is a great big mess. Just like ApreMare said they are fortunate to have Blohm & Voss. We can expect to see more yachts like Crescent go there to finish work possibly.

I have been wondering: at which point of the construction does a shipyard normally activate the onboard smoke/fire detection and fighting system? (maybe temporarely rigged to an outside system to get the water on board?)
I don’t think they can activate it until very late. The crew is regularly trained in using it in an emergency. I think if workers were in a room when a hifog system went off, it wouldn’t necessarily help their chances of getting out and surviving. When we did fire watch on refits, the fire doors and damper systems were functional. Fire fighting systems on board are there to prevent catastrophal loss of life at sea. The needs in a dock or alongside at a yard are different. If the yacht at lurssen was almost finished, I expect the cause was fairly mundane. There would be no welding or burning any more so it was probably electrical or chemical, a heater or a fan burning out.

Determining and agreeing on the value of the loss is the only big problem. First, there's the physical loss of the boat. The majority of that will be a refund to the buyer for what they've paid to date and then a smaller percentage to Lurssen for work not yet paid for. Second, is the damage to the facility. Third, though, we have business interruption insurance which I would be very surprised if Lurssen doesn't have. This can take two forms. One is cover all costs during the period of interruption. Two, cover costs plus loss profits. This boat will simply not get built now or anytime soon. It may well be the buyer doesn't now want a boat from Lurssen, but, if they do, there's no remaining obligation under the contract for this boat. It's all terminated by the fire and payment for the loss. I've been through one sizable fire loss in my career, but nothing like this one. Oddly, the insurer had one taking place at that time that was closer to this one. The delay on ours and the other one was agreeing on the damages. Fortunately, both companies were strong enough to take the necessary steps to resume operation as soon as possible without waiting for the insurance payment. In our case, we shut the warehouse down for 7 weeks and the total loss was $5 million. The day after the fire, we leased another building nearby to move all the goods and inspect them. The other company had their facility destroyed and immediately started preparation of a new building, rerouting business meanwhile to other locations in the country. Their loss and payment was $56 million. I would expect Lurssen to remove the debris and reconstruct the shed quickly. They may shift some boats between facilities. I would expect though the next boat to be built there will proceed normally but up to 3 months later than planned. In their long build times, that delay will ultimately not be all that discernable. If the buyer wants another boat built, I'd expect them to work it in somewhere down the line but it could easily be a couple of years before it is started. For a well run business like Lurssen, this won't be all that complicated other than the single matter of agreeing on the amount of their loss.

Virginia Beach yacht, 75-foot, catches fire, 3 people on board rescued in dramatic fashion

The yacht was towed by the virginia beach fire department, assisting the coast guard, to fort story, a military base on virginia beach..

lurssen yacht fire

A 75-foot-yacht off the coast of Cape Henry in Virginia Beach caught fire, forcing its occupants to jump into the water, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Mayday call for "a recreational vessel on fire" came in around 3:30 a.m. Friday, a spokesperson of the U.S. Coast Guard told USA TODAY over the phone.

Motor Vessel Savage, a 75-foot-yacht, was on fire about two miles off the coast of Cape Henry.

Three adults who were on board the vessel jumped into the water and were later rescued by a pilot boat, said U.S.C.G.

"All three were picked up within approximately 10 minutes by pilot boats and no injuries are recorded," said the U.S.C.G.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department, assisting the Coast Guard, towed the boat to Fort Story, a military base on Virginia Beach, where it is still smoldering.

The fire department is fighting the fire from the shore, said the spokesperson, adding that the vessel is against a rock. The U.S.C.G. is also monitoring the situation, with a boat on scene.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, said the U.S.C.G.

Lürssen's 82m Project Cali officially christened Haven

Lürssen 's Project Cali has officially been christened Haven . The 82-metre superyacht was last seen snaking down the Kiel Canal in northern Germany in preparation for sea trials, with delivery imminent.

Designed in-house by Jim Robert Sluijter, Haven is characterised by a reverse bow and expansive deck spaces that place a "great emphasis on outdoor conviviality".

By Katie Scott   14 December 2023

Lurssen has officially launched the striking 142m (465.8ft) superyacht Project Ali Baba ahead of her outfitting at the Hamburg facilities, and anticipated 2024 delivery.

Moved from her previous shed at the shipyard's facility in Bremen, which is now undergoing maintenance due to technical issues with the dock gate, the captivating motor yacht continues to shine a light on the globally renowned shipbuilder this week after yesterday's launch of 102m (335.11ft) superyacht JASSJ at the Rendsburg facility.

Overview of Lurssen superyacht Ali Baba

Previously seen in May 2022 in two halves before her hull was joined together, Project Ali Baba showcases stunning elongated lines, plus four exterior decks and a spacious beach club for waterside entertainment. Two helipads are situated on the fore and aft deck, offering ample opportunities for guests to make the most of the Mediterranean and many other popular yacht charter destinations .

Offering a 12-cabin layout for up to 24 guests, Project Ali Baba looks to feature an elevator connecting all decks, air conditioning, and fold-down balconies.

At this time it is unknown whether Project Ali Baba will be joining the global yacht charter fleet , however, if you're interested in chartering a yacht of a similar caliber, take a look at all the available Lurssen yachts for charter .
