Waikiki Parking in 2023: The Definitive Guide (Comparing 20 Hotels)

(Updated July 27, 2023)

Finding parking in Waikiki is a complex process and the cost can potentially break your travel budget. Hotels generally charge from $30 to $50 per night. In this post, we’ll help you plan your trip and provide you with alternatives that will save you a ton of money in Waikiki. We’ve scoured the web, picked up the phone, and visited hotels to create the ultimate guide to finding the best, cheap and free parking in Waikiki.

The first section of this article will cover general information about Waikiki parking options and provide free parking alternatives. The second section reveals the cheapest parking lots in Waikiki. The third section provides answers to visitors’ frequently asked questions. The fourth section is a compendium of parking rates and nearby options for popular hotels in Waikiki so you can choose the best parking option for your budget.

Overnight Parking: General Information

Hotel parking.

Hotel parking can be the most convenient, but usually most expensive, option for travelers. Most hotels offer both self parking and valet parking. Valet parking is roughly $10/day more expensive than self-parking rates, not counting the cost of tips. Each hotel has its own rules so we recommend you asking the following questions when conducting your research.

Things to Consider When Looking For Parking

  • How much does on-site parking cost?
  • Does the structure allow unlimited in-and-out privileges or can you only exist and enter the parking lot once?
  • Is the cost of parking included in the cost of the resort fee?
  • Are your fees determined by the calendar day or by 24-hour periods?
  • Are there any other costs associated with parking (e.g., taxes and tips)?

Public Parking Garages

Public garages can offer cheaper rates than hotels do, but you are going to have to walk a bit to get there. The downside to using these garages is that rates and rules are highly variable . Don’t be surprised to see day rates, night rates, overnight rates, and hourly rates on the same price board! In the tables in part 3, we list the affordable garages near your hotel.

On-Street Parking and Parking at Public Parks

Parking meters can cost as much as $1.50 per hour in Waikiki. We do not recommend you park on the street for two reasons: (1) you are not guaranteed a stall and (2) there are many different rules governing different zones, and you risk getting your car towed if you don’t read the street signs.

Ala Wai Canal and Ala Moana Beach Park

Other blogs will recommend free parking on Ala Wai Boulevard (alongside Ala Wai Canal) and at Ala Moana Beach Park. We advise against this . Parking is prohibited along the Ala Wai Canal on weekdays from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Ala Moana Beach Park is closed overnight. If your car is in these areas during the restricted times, it will be towed.

What if my vehicle is towed?

If you have a rental vehicle, contact your rental agency for further instructions. For non-rental vehicles, contact the Police at 911 for non-emergencies. Provide the license plate, vin, and the location where you parked the vehicle.

Free Parking with Hui Car Share

The best way to avoid parking fees altogether is to use a car sharing service like Hui Car Share. Hui is a round-trip car rental service that allows you to reserve and unlock a car (download it here) . With Hui, you can pick up a car from 16 locations just blocks away from most Waikiki hotels. With Hui, you must return the car to the same location that you picked the car up from, you cannot drop a car off at a different location. Free parking with Hui is limited to the station you pick your car up from. You cannot pick up a car and park it in any location.

Gas is also free and insurance is included with your reservation. Prices start at $12/hour and $125.50/day. All locations are accessible 24/7.

The Cheapest Place to Park in Waikiki

In East Waikiki, the Waikiki Banyan is the cheapest place to park your car overnight. In West Waikiki, the Ala Wai Boat Harbor is the cheapest place to park your car overnight. These two lots are the stalwart recommendations that you’ll find across every forum and blog out there. We think these are great places to park but they can be out of the way, so expect to walk a little further to get to these lots.

Waikiki Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Waikiki Yacht Club is a special place overlooking the Ala Wai Harbor, and feels a long way from the chaos of Waikiki. Highly recommended. Fun sailors and honest drinks.

I went to this place as guests of some members who have a boat at the marina. However, you can also gain entry if you are a member of another yacht club. Not sure of their rules on this. However, the atmosphere there is great... and they serve excellent food. I had the Mahi Mahi burger. Very good! It’s also a good place to chill over a few drinks. If you are lucky enough to gain entry, it’s worth a visit. More

When in Honolulu I always try to stop at Waikiki Yacht Club for a meal. As a reciprocal Yacht Club member, I was made welcome immediately, and issued with a temporary membership card. I could think of no better place to sit on dusk with... a cold beer and a meal, out on the deck overlooking the marina. I was not disappointed! The staff were very friendly. The meal was great. In the words of Arnie, "I'll be back!". More

We visited the club as guests after showing my membership from R.M.Y.C. Sydney We were made very welcome and enjoyed a great meal over looking the marina thanks to the club and we will be back on our next visit

With our reciprocal agreement with RNZYS we used this place to. Have great food views and great happy hour drinks.. well worth a visit

Impressive club right beside the marina with it's own swimming pool. Not cheap 2 Pinot Noirs cost 16 Dollars. Big bar & restaurant quite deserted on the day of our visit.

We use the reciprocal agreement of another yacht club on the East Coast and we use this club every year while in Waikiki. They went out of their way to make me a jalapeño margarita, which I deeply appreciate. Maui mahi burgers were dried out... and over done. Onion rings were over fried and inedible. Next visit I had the French dip which was very good, the burger also very good. Staff is very pleasant and stretched too thin during busy hours. Atmosphere very convivial and happy. Always a pleasure to be here, More

Took a chance on being allowed in as a yacht club member in Sydney-but that was ok with the receptionist. Being just across from the Ala Moana shopping mall it was much better looking out across the marina at bobbing yacht masts than the offerings... in the mall. More

lots of pay by the hour parking for anyone staying near the ilikai downtown. parking at the lagoon is free all day, but park here for a dollar an hour at night. hidden gem for parking near downtown

Have been deciding whether or not to join the club. I have no reasons not to. One of the reasons I have decide to join is because of the people. So friendly and accommodating. They let me come in for free for several months to... try it out and see how it fits, and paddle in their club, it was more than a warm reception. Food is good for the price paid. More

WYC is a private club however they have reciprocal with many clubs and yacht club around the world so it's worth inquiring !! The staff and bartenders are top notch !! Hard to beat the under $10.00 blue plate specials. The bar and restaurant menus... are we'll worth the value !! The sashimi is ono !! I miss having my boat there drinking dining and sleeping on board. I'm traveling too much to get the boat out and the active sailors and iron sailors made better use of my slip. It's one of the "best" places to view the Friday night fireworks for sure. Enjoy :-) More

One of our group is a boatie and he wanted to visit one of the local clubs. After some internet research we decided that here was going to be the best option. Upon arrival we were greeted with a locked gate and a door bell.... We had to show ID and a membership card to gain access. Fortunately my RSL membership card was considered adequate and we were all allowed in. Our presence was brought to the attention of the General Manager "Randy", who introduced himself and asked where we were from and ensured we were well looked after. The entire staff was very friendly, efficient and helpful which was reflected in their tip. The food was excellent and we each tried something different, a couple of us even had desert. The décor is delightful and the views just wonderful. More

Where to Find the Best Waikiki Parking

Parking in Waikiki can be pretty expensive . Parking spaces are few, as they are in any big city.

You could always use the Waikiki Trolley if you’d rather avoid paying for a rental car as well as parking costs. This service covers the entirety of Waikiki. Or you could utilize Uber and vehicle services.

However, having a car gives you unparalleled independence, particularly if you’re traveling with kids. I’ve compiled a list that will make parking simpler in order to provide you with the greatest experience possible in Waikiki.

Free parking in Waikiki is definitely feasible, but you have to know where to search!

Because Honolulu’s public parking is comparable to that of other major cities, I’ll give you an overview of what to look for. I’ll also cover any overnight parking in Waikiki needs you may have. Finally, I’ll discuss parking near Waikiki beaches .

For all of my recommendations on where to park in Waikiki, keep reading!

Is There Free Parking in Waikiki?

Public parking lots and unmetered roadways in Waikiki remain very crowded from November through April , which is Honolulu’s busiest travel season. Since both locals and visitors use this area, finding free parking close to Waikiki is often simpler on the weekends!

To prepare you, I’ll discuss both free parking garages and free on-street parking.

Free Parking Lots in Waikiki

On the west side of Waikiki, the Ala Moana Center offers top-notch shopping. All your favorite large retailers are located in this enormous 4-level mall. If you’re going to Kahanamoku Beach, you can park in Waikiki at this location as well.

For up to 6 hours, parking is free. Just make sure to read the warnings to avoid parking there during the prohibited times.

Ala Moana Beach Park is located directly across the street from the shopping mall. Parking there is free from 4 AM to 10 PM. Just don’t leave your car there overnight!

There is a fantastic free central lot that you can use if you’re going to the renowned Honolulu Zoo , Kapi’olani Park, or even Diamond Head . On Monsarrat Avenue, look for the Waikiki Shell parking lot . If you want limitless, free parking that is available every hour of the day, come here. You’re most likely to find a spot because of how big the lot is!

Free Street Parking in Waikiki

Consider going to a public park in Honolulu for your best odds of finding free parking. The west side of Waikiki has a parking lot at Ala Moana Beach Park . Parking is available here throughout the day, however, take into account that it becomes quite crowded on the weekends and that spaces might be difficult to come by.

Image of downtown Waikiki Oahu

Along Ala Wai Boulevard , which parallels Ala Wai Canal, free street parking is available every day of the year. On weekday mornings while the streets are being cleaned, you simply cannot park here. Just be careful to read the street signs and park only where it is permitted.

Wai Nani Way is a few streets away from the sand beaches of Waikiki Bay. You can park for free all day long closer to the Diamond Head side. If you’re going to the beach or the zoo, have a peek here. Even though Waikiki’s tourist attractions are farther away, you should keep this location in mind if you visit on a busy day.

On the east end, there is additional free parking available close to Waikiki. Here, Kapi’olani Park is divided by both Monsarrat Avenue and Kalakaua Avenue . For both metered and free public parking in Waikiki, check out these streets.

If you can find a place, you can park for free along the Diamond Head Beach part of Diamond Head Road between 5 AM and 10 PM. If you can find parking, it’s worth the slight detour down the road.

waikiki yacht club parking

Metered Street Parking

Metered spaces can be found in Waikiki and offer greater public parking. The cost and time limits of parking meters in Waikiki might change. However, depending on your intentions, they could be quite useful.

Image of PArking meters againt a shallow depth of cars parked at the background

The average cost of parking is less than $1 per hour, with some locations allowing parking for up to 4 hours.

Honolulu street parking is cost-free after hours and on Sundays all day. If you’re staying at a nearby resort or hotel and don’t want to pay the garage costs, this is a terrific overnight alternative! Just be sure to check the parking regulations posted on any nearby signs.

I advise going to Kalakaua Avenue , which runs the length of Waikiki from east to west, for metered parking. Like Diamond Head Road, parts of this major highway have a number of metered parking spaces.

Permit Parking Lots

An expensive parking lot gives you a base from which to explore Waikiki parking options. Lots with attendants are often more secure and less expensive than garages.

Image of an aerial shot of a Waikiki parking lot

The Ala Wai Boat Harbor parking lot is one of the nicest permit spots on the west side. This lot is free throughout the day if you’re seeking inexpensive parking in Waikiki. The only restriction is a 6-hour time frame. If you’re staying on this side of the neighborhood, their overnight option, which costs only $1 per hour, is a terrific choice.

Fort DeRussy is another location on Waikiki’s western side. The park and the beach are both wonderful places to visit from here. Additionally, it is halfway between the Ala Moana Center and the International Marketplace Mall!

On the east side of the park, Kalia Road is where you’ll find the Fort DeRussy parking lot . A few dollars an hour or $36 for 24 hours are the two options. Because it’s a military base, if you have a military ID, they’ll give you a discount the first time you use it.

The enormous Waikiki Zoo parking lot close to Diamond Head is another excellent choice. The parking lot can be used without actually visiting the zoo, and it costs just $1.50 per hour. Just be aware that there is a 4-hour time limit.

Parking Garages in Waikiki

When it comes to the parking garages in Waikiki, you have to pay for attendants and security. You will pay more for valet parking than for self-parking if you use one. There are several benefits to using a garage even if you won’t get cheap Waikiki parking there.

Empty parking garage in the underground.

To start, the region is conveniently dotted with garages. It basically comes down to the qualities you want in a garage.

The majority of them lack in-out privileges. Do not anticipate using your vehicle during the 12-hour period for which you have paid. If there aren’t any spaces available for overnight parking, you’ll undoubtedly discover a garage that is open all day and night!

The cost of a day’s parking in a garage in Waikiki can range from a few dollars to $35. I’ll explain my approach to this sort of service.

Park at a Shopping Center

It’s possible that you’re visiting Waikiki to take advantage of the upscale retail options. Using a garage in a shopping center is a terrific method to save money on parking. With evidence of purchase from the center’s businesses, you receive a reduced cost!

If you only need parking for the day, use this parking option. Usually, there is a time restriction and no overnight parking.

For instance, The Royal Hawaiian Center provides free parking for two hours, with discounted rates for additional time. You must present a receipt from a restaurant or center store. Otherwise, parking there for the day is the regular $6 per hour. This is a wonderful value compared to Waikiki parking charges!

Another great location for parking at a reasonable price is The International Marketplace Shopping Mall . If you’re headed to Waikiki Beach, you can park here. If you arrive before 9 AM and leave before 6 PM, the early bird rate is only $12. Without validation from one of the mall stores, it costs $3 per hour.

Find an Overnight Garage

I advise using the Waikiki Banyan Parking Garage on Kuhio Avenue for longer-term parking. They provide you with complete freedom to come and go, which is rare!  They have a daily cost of $27 or a weekly rate of $125.

In Hawaii, there are a ton of resorts and condo buildings close to the beach where you can park your car overnight. If you want to pay a set price for parking for 24 hours, these facilities are fantastic. These parking garages can be found in places like:

  • Hyatt Regency Waikiki
  • Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa
  • Sheraton Waikiki Hotel

These kinds of places provide a range of prices. There is frequently a difference in price between guest parking and public parking. Or other garages can have two rates—one during the day and another for the night. Some are only valet. For all the information you need, simply look at the signs outside the garage.

Waikiki Beach Parking

Waikiki beaches provide a variety of parking options. Others will need you to hunt for paid parking, while some have free lots. Here are my suggestions for parking spots in Waikiki that are near to each beach. Several of the places have previously been mentioned.

Ala Moana Beach Park

Free daytime parking is available at Ala Moana Beach Park in the Waikiki area. Additionally, parking at the Ala Moana Center is cost-free. Park here if you plan to visit Kahanamoku Beach.

Fort Derussy Beach Park

Use the parking lot near Kalia Road, which is on the park’s eastern side.

Waikiki Beach

The International Marketplace Shopping Mall parking lot is a good area to park, then I suggest strolling to the beach. Waikiki Beach has any public parking. You will have to pay for all parking and walk a few blocks. But it’s a short stroll!

Kuhio Beach

You can park nearby in the Waikiki Banyan parking garage.

Kapiolani Beach Park

In addition, Kapiolani Beach Park is close to both Queens Beach and Kaimana Beach. Look for free parking on Monsarrat Avenue to get to all 3 locations. You can also search for both free and metered parking on Kalakaua Avenue.

Diamond Head Beach Park

You can park along Diamond Head Road. This is the only available parking that isn’t a walk, however, it can take some looking. The scenery makes it worthwhile!

Waikiki Parking FAQ

Parking can be easily accessible at Waikiki Beach! At the Waikiki Business Plaza, just two blocks from the ocean and next to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, you can find easy, inexpensive parking. Rather than wasting time driving about aimlessly, you can relax in the sun since you don’t have to find parking!

Bring your disabled parking badge with you if you want to rent a vehicle! For up to two and a half hours, you can park for free in Hawaii with a placard.

Though some meters accept credit cards, it’s still a good idea to carry some quarters just in case. Not all parking garages and lots accept credit cards, however; some only accept cash.

More

WAIKIKI YACHT CLUB YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM

The program has been active since the 1960's and has produced literally thousands of sailors. Our program provides all boats and equipment for entry-level sailors through advanced sailors.  The goal of the program is threefold:

1) Enrich each young sailor’s life with an enduring respect and appreciation of the ocean. 2) Develop and master the skills of sailing, which can last a lifetime. 3) Utilize sailing to build confidence and sportsmanship in young athletes.

To this end, a solid foundation is built by emphasizing the development of fundamental skills, like maneuvering (tacks, jibes, safety position and landings), while simultaneously developing a continuing enjoyment of the sport. The WYC Youth Sailing Program embraces the triad modeled by US Sailing—Safety, Fun and Learning.

As kids and teens progress from novice to intermediate sailing, they will be challenged with a variety of possibilities that range from: singlehanded sailing, learning how to teach as an assistant instructor, and/or exploring other types of boats from one of our five fleets. As skills progress, many sailors begin racing in regattas hosted by Waikiki Yacht Club, before moving on to our traveling team. Finally, our Advanced Sailing Program continues the progression of both racing and teaching skills.

The WYC Youth Sailing Program has a lot to offer, whether your sailor wants to sail for one week a year or over two hundred days a year—whether this is just a fun activity to occasionally do, or whether this is the primary chosen sport of your athlete. Sailing is a life long sport that progresses in layers. The seeds planted between the ages of 8-18 can grow in many directions, whether it is traditional voyaging, windsurfing, racing, or cruising or a combination of all of them. Along the way your sailor may choose to compete in high school or college sailing.

“As a Sailing Director here since 1985, I have often been asked, which kid is going to be the next amazing sailor and the answer is simple: I have no idea. The sport is a late-development sport so the most important aspect, early on, is that young sailors learn to really love the ocean and the sport. That is the only way they will continue to put in the time and the repetitions to become truly skilled.” Guy Fleming—Sailing Director

LEARN TO SAIL PROGRAM

Fall Saturday Program of 12 weeks

Spring Saturday Program of 12 Weeks

Up to 12 weeks of Summer Sailing (Mon-Fri)

We follow the US Sailing Triad of: Safety, Fun, and Learning

Our program seeks to introduce kids to a lifetime of enjoyment in the many faceted sport of sailing; Teach respect for the ocean; and, use sailing as a platform to build confidence and sportsmanship in young athletes.

HIGH SCHOOL SAILING

There are currently 7 schools competing as part of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Iolani School, Kamehameha Kapalama, Le Jardin Academy, Mid Pacific Institute, Punahou School, Sacred Hearts Academy, and Saint Andrews Priory.

Intermediate Program

• These classes pick up where novice classes lead off.

• The Intermediate program is primarily taught in single handed El Toros and Open Skiffs but they will also be introduced to other boats like the Laser and Club 420.

• The program focuses on more improved boat handling, seamanship skills, the basics of tuning the boat for optimum performance, and an introduction to racing.

Assistant Instructor Program

A select group of up to12 Advanced sailors, between the ages of 12 and 16, are invited to be a part of this program. They start off by being the competent calm person in the boat during introductory sails.

Over time, they learn how to teach an intro to rigging, take people on introductory sails, help people learn how to capsize and right the boat, teach sail trim and steering.

Without their knowledge, they are also learning patience, and how to teach people with a variety of learning styles.

This program helps prepare candidates for the rigorous US Sailing four day certification course.

ADVANCED RACING PROGRAM

Picture--This picture was selected because not only does it show how extreme it can be, but most people would assume that the sailor is male. This is a picture of one of our female sailors who is currently competing for the Yale College Sailing Team.

Taught in Olympic Lasers (Which are also used in Collegiate Competition) and Club 420's (the Olympic Development Boat for the 470--The boat introduces spinnaker and trapezing skills).

The Advanced Racing Team participates in numerous classes and clinics which prepare them for the 70 events we run each year.

The advanced class trains for the U.S. Sailing Junior Olympic Festival which is hosted in Hawaii each year. The top kids also compete in National regattas on the mainland like the U.S. Sailing Youth Championships. Waikiki Yacht Club is proud to say that two of its sailors went on to win this prestigious event.

US SAILING JUNIOR OLYMPIC FESTIVAL

U.S. Sailing is the National Governing Body for the sport of sailing. As part of the Olympic pathway program, U.S. Sailing annually hosts roughly 20 Junior Olympic Festivals around the country to promote grass roots competition as well as have the top athletes qualify for national competition.

Waikiki Yacht Club has co-hosted the US Sailing Junior Olympic Festival-- Hawaii since 2002.

Each year between 70 and 120 athletes compete in this five day festival.

Advanced El Toros

The Advanced El Toro Program is for sailors who have been competing for some time. The program builds on the intermediate racing program. The Advsnced El Toro Sailors have typically been sailing for 3-7 years and have progressed from El Toro C4, C3 and C2, which race in the smaller training sail. They are now competing in El Toro C, B and A which uses the larger racing sail. Typically at this level, their boat handling is already very good and they are working on their ability to start, as well as predict wind shifts and use tactics and the rules to get around the course.

420’s

The 420 is the trainer for one of the Olympic double handed classes. It is 4.2 meters and helps to prepare Youth sailors for the larger 470. Both boats have the ability to train with spinnaker as well as trapeze.

Sailors in the 420 have typically already moved up to the advanced El Toro class.

420's can also be sailed college style without the trapeze or spinnaker. Many of our top sailors have used these skills to get into the college of their choice.

ADVANCED LASERS

The Laser is an Olympic Class Single Handed Dinghy that is also used in high school and college racing. Sailors typically begin racing in the smaller 4.7 meter sail and then move up through the radial sail and ultimately to the Full Rig sail. Sailors come out of the Advanced El Toro program and move up when they are large enough and strong enough for the boat.

FOILING LASERS

The Glide Free company has made a foiling kit for Lasers. A foil is a horizontal panel that lifts the boat out of the water. Foiling puts a premium on weight placement, timing, coordination of sail and tiller controls and balance. All of these skills are essential for successful sailing. The Waikiki Yacht Club Education Foundation has purchased two Foiling kits for the continuing education of our top end racers.

Waikiki Yacht Club Education Foundation (WYCEF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization set up to fund capital purchases for youth sailing. Education Foundation raises money primarily through donations and the sale of donated boats. The money raised is used to purchase the sailing fleets for the program – currently 15 Toppers, 12 El Toros, 12 - 420’s, 12 Lasers, and 6 BICs (Open Skiffs) – as well as sails, and other equipment. Additionally, the WYCEF funds a scholarship program for youngsters who might otherwise not have the opportunity to learn to sail a boat without financial assistance.
