Paul Allen’s 414-Foot Yacht Octopus Lists for Over $300 Million

The dual research and recreation vessel, which has located numerous sunken warships, has its own submarine, basketball court and recording studio, newsletter sign-up, week in review.

Shares the stories you may have missed from the world of luxury real estate

Octopus, the epic megayacht of the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen—which includes its own submarine, remote-controlled deep-sea explorer and on-deck gym—has hit the market for more than $300 million, boat broker Burgess announced this week.

At 414 feet, Octopus stretches longer than a football field and is at once a lavish floating resort with a spa and cinema, and a serious research vessel that provided Allen, who died last October at the age of 65, access to some of the Earth’s most remote places.

The billionaire philanthropist used the yacht to locate numerous sunken warships, downed aircraft and even lent it to the British Royal Navy to pull a historic bell from the depths of the Denmark Strait in 2012.

More:   Two Parcels in Uber-Exclusive L.A. Community List for a Total of $58 Million

It’s traversed the frigid waters of the Antarctic and deep dark caves in the Indian Ocean, where the vessel was integral to studying the mysterious coelacanth fish—once thought to have gone extinct with the dinosaurs more than 65 million years ago, according to Allen’s official website.

One of the megayacht’s greatest successes was the 2015 discovery of the sunken Japanese battleship Musashi, one of the largest warships in naval history, which Octopus found off the coast of the Philippines after the wreck eluded search teams for 70 years, Burgess said in a news release.

“Octopus offers an abundance of features and amenities specially tailored for those looking to explore the globe’s most remote and inaccessible destinations,” said the global brokerage, which is officially listing Octopus for €295 million (US$325.56 million). The yachting company, which has offices from Monaco to Phuket, Thailand, markets all of its boats in euros.

Such features include an eight-person submarine called Pagoo, a remote-operated vehicle capable of diving nearly 2 miles deep, helipads and a garage capable of storing an SUV and two helicopters.

The yacht can accommodate up to 26 guests across 13 cabins in addition to a crew of 60, according to the agents, who called it “the pinnacle explorer yacht for those seeking a proven ‘go-anywhere, do-anything platform.’”

In his memoir, Allen wrote that he was stunned when Germany-based builder Lürssen delivered Octopus in 2003.

“It was a third longer than a football field, more than 20 yards wide, seven stories high,” Allen wrote in his 2011 book “Idea Man.” “When I first stood on the bridge, I felt as though I was on a spaceship.”

Beyond exploration, the ship brought together all of Allen’s passions in what he called “one moveable feast.”

A few years after the boat's delivery, the tech titan parked it in the French Riviera to host a star-studded party during the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. Mick Jagger and U2 have performed on board, where he commissioned a soundproofed recording studio—a feat considering the vibrations of the engine, he wrote in his memoir.

There are multiple lounges, a library, bar, pool and spa. There’s even a basketball court on the below deck and a glass-bottomed observation lounge.

Of all the amenities and technical gadgets, Allen wrote that his favorite spot was an intimate deck at the very top of Octopus.

From there, “I’ve looked out over Venice rooftops," Allen said, "and the factories and naval yards along the Huangpu River in Shanghai.”

Legend Status: Paul Allen’s Octopus Superyacht is for Sale for $325M

Legend Status: Paul Allen’s Octopus Superyacht is for Sale for $325M

Paul Allen was a business magnate and philanthropist best known as the cofounder of Microsoft alongside his childhood friend, Bill Gates. When he died in 2018 he was ranked by Forbes as the 44th wealthiest person in the world. After his death many of his iconic and extravagant belongings went up for sale, such as the world’s largest aircraft built by his aerospace company Stratolaunch to put satellites into orbit, his two-seat UB model Mig-29 jet fighter, and his beloved Octopus , a superyacht of enormous proportion.

Octopus in Numbers

paul allen superyacht octopus

Built in 2003 by the German-based shipyard Lurssen, with its 414 feet, Octopus was the largest yacht in the world. In 2021, it doesn’t make it in the top ten, but it’s still considered one of the heaviest with its almost 10,000 tons. Octopus can hold 26 guests accommodating them in 13 cabins (suites) and 63 crew members in 30 cabins. Eight diesel generators power two electric motors providing six megawatts allowing Octopus to cruise 12,500 miles at 12.5 knots on a single tank of gas.

More Than A Yacht

Fraser and Burgess, the two top yacht broker companies in charge of the sale, listed it for $325,000,000 which seems a pretty high price considering it was built in 2003, but Octopus is one of a kind. Its timeless exterior makes it more appealing than many of the new exotic yachts, and it’s a pleasure yacht and an expedition boat as well.

paul allen superyacht octopus

Burgess confirms that Octopus handled many rescue missions and research trips, for example in Antarctica and the Arctic, thanks to the Ice-class 1A, and in the Philippines where a WWII battleship’s wreck was discovered.

Where Octopus shines like no other is in the interior design and additional toys.

Interior Design

paul allen superyacht octopus

Seattle-based designer Jonathan Quinn Barnett of JQB Design realized Allen’s dream to put together “all my passions in one moveable feast.” The yacht is equipped with a large pool that can be turned into a dance floor due to a retractable glass system. Many celebrities and musicians like Mike Jagger, Bono, and Johnny Cash have recorded their music in the yacht studio. While a gym, a movie theater, a bar, a library, a glass-bottomed underwater observation lounge, and a dive center with a hyperbaric chamber are available to guests, an entire deck is reserved to the owner featuring a lounge with a full bar, dining area, jacuzzi, and a private elevator.

Additional Toys

On the rear of the boat there is a large floodable well-deck with a yellow submarine called Pagoo, which can hold ten people for an eight-hour adventure diving as deep as 1,000 feet. Additionally, the superyacht houses a remotely operated vehicle that can dive thousands of feet deep, the ship’s primary boat also known as Man Of War, a landing pad, a huge helicopter hanger with two helicopters, and a basketball court.

paul allen superyacht octopus

In his 2011 biography Allen referred to Octopus as “less a Bentley than a Range Rover,” adding that it “has realized every mission I had in mind for her.” The next Octopus owner will not only buy the superyacht but also the iconic allure and history that comes with “her.”

Inside Paul Allen’s Former Yacht on Sale for $90 Million

By Katie Schultz

The estate of the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is offering the sale of his 303-foot-long superyacht , Tatoosh , for a cool $90 million, according to Dirt . If you’re thinking those stats aren’t impressive enough for the billionaire and tech magnate , well, you’d be right. Tatoosh , which is currently the 60th largest yacht worldwide, was just Allen’s secondary vessel. His main yacht, Octopus , sold last year for $325 million and stretches 414 feet long, making it the 20th largest yacht in the world.

As for Tatoosh , the recently-listed vessel was custom-built by German shipyard Nobiskrug in 2000 for fellow American tech mogul Craig McCaw before being bought by Allen the following year for an estimated $100 million. The craft was put up for sale shortly after Allen’s death in 2018, but was taken off the market for an extensive refitting that was completed last year.

Inside the vessel, 11 staterooms can accommodate up to 19 guests with access to a lengthy list of lavish amenities that includes a heated swimming pool with a hydraulic-powered mosaic floor that can raise and lower, a parquet floor salon complete with a limestone fireplace and a bar, a movie theater adorned in red velvet, a beauty salon, a gym, two helicopter pads, a sunbathing and diving area decked out with a blue-tiled spa, bulletproof windows, a fleet of jet skis, multiple 43-foot tenders, and a crew of 31 to oversee it all. The owner’s quarters include a private deck, two dressing rooms, and an observation lounge with a private galley, all spanning across two of the ship’s five decks, which are all accessible via elevator.

To maintain and staff the superyacht, which will be one of the largest yachts on display during the Monaco Yacht Show later this month, potential new owners will have to be prepared to pay $9 to $10 million per year in addition to the hefty price tag. Tatoosh is being represented by the Monaco-based yachting company Fraser.

One of the most spectacular – and first – superyacht explorers built, Octopus, is being offered for charter for the first time. One more destination has been added to the final leg of the ship’s international tour, and it will take adventures where few others have been before: Antarctica.

Octopus is a superyacht explorer built by German luxury shipyard Lurssen and delivered to the owner in 2003. That owner was the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and the brief for Octopus called for a Land Rover instead of a Bentley of the sea: an explorer with ice-class capabilities and all the necessary gear, but that did not skimp on luxury.

The briefs of most of today’s superyacht explorers read the same, but these were the early aughts, and Octopus was a trendsetter. With a design by Espen Oeino and elegant interiors by Jonathan Quinn Barnett, Octopus soon became a landmark for this segment of the market and a staple of quality in the industry. The eight-deck 414-foot (126-meter) vessel was sold in the summer of 2021 after nearly two years on the market.

With a reported cost of $226 million, it is now part of Camper & Nicholsons charter fleet. This is the first time that Octopus has been offered for public charter after Allen’s ownership, and that alone is enough to make headlines. However, the addition of a new destination for Octopus is bound to renew interest in it: the explorer is heading to Antarctica. Prices start at $2.2 million per week.

This summer, Octopus sails for Central America, Northern Europe, and the Pacific. In the winter, it will depart for Central and South America, and the Caribbean Sea, with Antarctica added as the new destination on the final leg of the tour. It’s only fitting that it went there, considering its hybrid-diesel environmentally-friendly propulsion, its ice-class capabilities, and the fact that it was designed to go where no other explorer dares to go.

“[Octopus is] the perfect yacht to undertake such a voyage,”  said Jacqui Lockhart, Head of Charter Marketing Europe for Camper & Nicholsons, tells the media outlet.  “[It is] well-equipped to host intrepid charterers off the beaten track with a fully equipped medical suite and dive center on board – complete with hyperbaric chamber – as well as a submarine and two helipads. Octopus was truly built for explorer expeditions!” Indeed, it was. Offering personalizable accommodation for up to 12 guests in 13 suites (imagine that) and 50 crew, it’s packed with luxury amenities, including a private screening room, a pool that converts into a dancefloor at the touch of a button, and various lounge areas. More importantly, though, it’s packed with exploring gear, from two helicopters in the garage, to seven tenders, an autonomous robotic boat (ROV), and a custom Pagoo submarine, life rafts, jetskis, and a wide assortment of water toys.

Powered by two hybrid ABB Industry AG E-Motors, Octopus has a range of 12,500 nautical miles (14,400 miles / 23,150 km) at a cruising speed of 12 knots (13.8 mph / 22.2 kph), but top speed is a more brisk 19 knots (21.8 mph / 35.2 kph).

Paul Allen’s megayacht Octopus created serious waves when it was launched back in 2003. It’s one of the world’s largest vessels, after all. Now, for the first time, the epic 414-footer will be available for exclusive charter in Antarctica .

The late Microsoft co-founder’s beautiful behemoth, which was added to the Camper & Nicholsons charter fleet back in 2021, will spend the summer in Central America, Northern Europe and the Pacific, before journeying to the Earth’s southernmost continent in late 2022. From here, the UK-based yachting company’s seven-day Antarctica tour will allow intrepid explorers to come face to face with some of the most breathtaking natural wonders.

As you might expect, seafarers will be kept in the lap of luxury while aboard Octopus. The ice-class megayacht, which was designed by Espen Oeino , comes fitted with an array of glitzy amenities, including a glass-bottomed aquarium, an observation lounge, a pool, gym, spa and cinema. The vessel also sports two helipads to facilitate comings and goings, along with an array of toys and tenders for day trips and further exploration.

Jonathan Quinn Barnett ‘s interior, meanwhile, which was refit by Monk Design in 2021, comprises multiple dining areas and bars, along with an extravagant master suite, two VIP suites, seven double staterooms and three twins. Naturally, there’s plenty of space for the crew, too.

“She’s the perfect yacht to undertake such a voyage,” Jacqui Lockhart, head of charter marketing Europe for Camper & Nicholsons, said in a statement . “She’s well-equipped to host intrepid charterers off the beaten track with a fully equipped medical suite and dive center on board—complete with hyperbaric chamber—as well as a submarine and two helipads.”

Octopus has an impressive range of 12,500 nautical miles when sailing at 12 knots and can clock 19 knots when cutting through the sea at maximum speed. Allen, who was an avid ocean explorer, took the vessel to the farthest corners of the globe to further oceanographic research. Now you can make your own discoveries. Charter rates start at $2.2 million per week.
