7 days in the Marlborough Sounds on a superyacht

Picton / tawa bay.

The Marlborough Sounds are one of New Zealand’s best-kept secrets – an area of sea-drowned valleys at the top of the South Island, where fingers of deep water reach between the hills. It is a maze of waterways dotted with small bays and tiny sounds. The waterways consist of three large sounds – Queen Charlotte Sound, Kenepuru Sound and Pelorus Sound.

Abundant indigenous forest around the Marlborough Sounds is home to native wildlife, while the deep waters teem with dolphins and seals. And it is here that you can sample the local delicacy – green-lipped mussels, washed down with that famed Marlborough wine – Sauvignon Blanc.

Most of the 550 mussel farms are located in the Marlborough Sounds, while one of the best wine regions in the world lies further inland with an abundance of acclaimed wineries where Marlborough’s finest Sauvignon Blancs can be sampled.

Whether visiting on a private yacht or planning a luxury yacht charter in New Zealand the area has plenty to offer.

Day 1: Picton / Tawa Bay

Join the yacht in Picton, a small, harbourside town, nestled at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, known as ‘the gateway to the Marlborough Sounds’. Spend some time in the village, exploring quaint arts and crafts shops, or take a helicopter flight for a spectacular overview of the coastline.

Departing Picton Marina, cruise down Queen Charlotte Sound, taking in the magnificent scenery before anchoring in Tawa Bay in the Endeavour Inlet, one of the many places connected to Captain Cook, who used the Sounds as a base from which to explore the Southern Ocean. Spend the afternoon exploring bays and inlets by kayak.

Wine aficionados may wish to make an inland excursion to one of Malborough’s wineries for a wine tasting and end the day with a meal at Herzog Restaurant.

Ship’s Cove / Ketu Bay

After breakfast on board, set out for a hike along a stretch of one of New Zealand’s great walks — the Queen Charlotte Track from Resolution Bay to Ship’s Cove, where Captain Cook set up a camp on his voyages to New Zealand. The elevated track offers great views of the Sound and your yacht at anchor.

Arrive to find a picnic lunch set up by your crew, which can be enjoyed with a spot of bird-watching — look out for oyster catchers, paradise shell ducks and pied shags. You may even be paid a visit by a weka — a flightless native bird with a very curious nature.

The afternoon could be spent on Long Island, great for fishing , snorkelling or diving, or meeting the penguins of the Motuara Island bird sanctuary, which has magnificent 360 degree views from atop an old gun emplacement.

Leaving Queen Charlotte Sound, head around Cape Jackson and through Allen Strait into Forsyth Bay, anchoring for the night in Ketu Bay.

Tennyson Inlet

Cruise down the Pelorus Sound – a long, drowned valley with steep, wooded slopes that extends some 31 miles inland – keeping an eye out for dolphins while heading for ‘World’s End’, where three inlets terminate.

Those looking to walk off lunch can follow the well-kept trail at the head of Tennyson Inlet for an invigorating hour-and-a-half climb through the forest to a ridge overlooking Nydia Bay to the south, while the more adventurous could walk the entire 5-hour Nydia Bay Track. Alternatively take out the water toys, go swimming, snorkelling or kayaking.

Stephens Island / D’urville Island

In the morning, continue back up the Popoure Reach to the Waitata Reach in the Pelorus Sound, passing the wildlife sanctuary of the Chetwode Islands, and perhaps stopping to do some fishing nearby. If there’s time, take the tender to the private island of Forsyth which can be explored on foot.

Then head for the ruggedly beautiful D’Urville Island passing Stephens Island — unique home to the tuatara, a type of gecko. Anchor for the night in Port Hardy, a natural harbour on D’Urville Island, which is named after a French explorer who was a botanist and linguist.

Grevill Harbour / Guard’s Bay

After leaving the spectacular Port Hardy, proceed down the rugged coastline of D’Urville Island, perhaps stopping for lunch in Grevill Harbour, or taking the tender ashore to meander along one of the island’s fantastic walking tracks or partaking in a spot of cray fishing.

Continue on to Current Basin, passing through the narrows of French Pass to reach Guard’s Bay where you can spend the afternoon messing around on water toys.

Motuara Island / Bay Of Many Coves

Cruise back around Alligator Head, calling into Port Gore so that the divers onboard can explore the wreck of the Mikhail Lermontov, one of the best shipwreck dives in the world this Russian cruise liner sank after venturing too close to the coast in 1983.

Return to the Queen Charlotte Sound, anchoring off Motuara Island, famous for its native birds and wild penguins, for a walk to the lookout platform that offers a panoramic 360-degree view of the sound, including Cook Strait. Alternatively moor off the next door Long Island for some stunning diving and snorkelling in the marine reserve.

Anchor the night in the Bay of Many Coves and dine at the resort restaurant ashore, where the chef prepares seasonal dishes with fresh Marlborough ingredients – green lipped mussels, plump, succulent scallops, cherries, stone fruits, olives and grapes.

The Brothers Islands / Tory Channel / Lochmara Bay

Sail to Cape Koamaru at the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound, into Cook Strait and past The Brothers Islands, another wildlife sanctuary with a prominent lighthouse on top and buildings that used to house the families who ran the light before it was automated. This is a good place to fish for one of New Zealand’s best fish – the blue cod.

Cruise down the rugged coastline and enter Tory Channel, where you can stop off to visit a perfectly preserved whaling station. Take a leisurely cruise back down the sound to Lochmara Bay, where you will bid the yacht and crew farewell before returning to Picton.

Tech billionaire’s $240 million superyacht the Artefact spotted in New Zealand

A $240 million superyacht owned by a tech billionaire has been spotted cruising through the Bay of Islands.

Locals living around Doubtless Bay, north of Russell, posted photos on social media saying they’d spotted the 80-metre Artefact paying their “little bay a visit”.

The superyacht is owned by Canadian Mike Lazaridis, best known for creating the BlackBerry smartphone, and has been in NZ waters since last year.

Its stops have included a two-week stay in Ōpua, near Russell, over Christmas 2023, and then a cruise to the South Island where it was spotted in the Marlborough Sounds in January this year.

The yacht is captained by Northland resident Aaron Clark , a Kiwi who grew up in the Auckland suburb of Beachlands, RNZ reports.

Built in Germany in 2020 at an estimated cost of $240m, it was named Motor Yacht of the Year in 2021.

The custom-built boat is designed to carry 12 passengers and 22 crew and has a range of about 6000 nautical miles or 11,000km, Clark told RNZ.

The boat’s most distinctive feature from the outside is its shape and use of glass.

Its 223 pieces of glass weigh 75 tonnes and cover an area of 760sqm, RNZ reports.

The crew includes two chefs and a sous chef and there is a tai chi room that has high ceilings so those practicing can wield a sword above their heads.

The owner Lazaridis, 62, was born in Turkey to Greek parents, who moved to Canada when he was a child.

He has been described as the father of the modern smartphone.

At the age of 12 he won a prize for reading every science book in the library at Windsor, his hometown in Ontario, RNZ reports.

After founding BlackBerry he specialised in quantum computing and has donated large sums of money to theoretical physics research.

Voilà:

Voila Yacht Charters is a locally owned and operated business.  Owner, Yo and David McGill are passionate about sailing and enjoy sharing one of New Zealand’s best kept secrets – the stunning beauty of the Marlborough Sounds.  We love our yacht and have sailed her to the Pacific Islands in 2018.  We have sailed the Marlborough Sounds and Abel Tasman extensively.  Occasionally we convert Voila from a charter yacht to a race yacht and compete in some of the long harbour races.  Our favorite times on Voila have to be overnight/multi day excursions, where we de-stress and live simply.

We endeavour to make each experience unique and tailor the experience to the clientele.  Whether it is an exciting sailing day you want, or you prefer a relaxed, tranquil day out on the water, our experienced crew will ensure it is memorable.

PROMO: Save 30% per person on May 2024 departures!

Discover the tranquil waterways, wildlife and rich history of New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds on an unforgettable 7-day Kiwi adventure exploring Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sounds, French Pass and d'Urville Island.

Famed for the breath-taking beauty of their winding cobalt waterways, iconic landscapes, lush native forests, wildlife and remote coastlines these regions are also rich in early New Zealand history and the location of some of the country's most important conservation efforts.

Formed by a system of submerged valleys carved out following the last ice age around 10,000 years ago, the scenic playground of Marlborough Sounds encompasses some 1,500-kilometres of forested coastline, sheltered inlets and bays awaiting exploration, many only accessible by sea. The union of three main bodies of water - Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds - Marlborough Sounds has more than 50 Department of Conservation managed reserves and several predatorfree wildlife sanctuaries.

Just 500 treacherous metres from the mainland, d'Urville Island was named after French admiral Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont d'Urville and his ill fated passage of the infamous French Pass in January 1827. After several near misses while seeking passage inside the island, he came close to losing his ship Astrolabe after hitting the reef. Now a possum, rat and weasel-free conservation reserve, d'Urville Island is one of the last strongholds of the critically endangered Long-tailed Bat and provides a respite for the world's rarest shag - the King Shag - and several other species of rare birds and geckos.

A voyage of adventure and discovery awaits in the Marlborough Sounds.

The Sounds are warm and lively in summer, from November to March, providing the perfect sheltered environment for sailing and motor yachts alike. Throughout the rest of the year, although colder, the Sounds take on an incredible stillness and vibrant colour. Because of its geographical location, it always pays to take plenty of warm clothes and some wet-weather gear, as the weather can turn pretty quickly. If your ideal holiday involves stunning scenery, great sailing and calm, crisp days, a New Zealand yacht charter in the Marlborough Sounds will be a delightful experience.

Private yacht charter guide to marlborough sounds, new zealand wineries.

New Zealand Marlborough Sound

Marlborough Sound

The Marlborough Sounds area of New Zealand includes Queen Charlotte Sound, Kenpuru, and Pelorus Sounds. With more than 900 miles of coastline offering gorgeous views of lush green mountains, the waters contain numerous quiet coves and bays waiting to be explored on a private yacht charter trip. It would be easy to spend weeks here, with something new to see and do each and every day.

Marlborough Sound Mountains & Vineyard

The low summer rainfall, lush hills, and plentiful sunshine have created a breathtaking landscape in Marlborough Sounds—and the perfect conditions for growing grapes. So it’s no wonder the area is home to a number of fantastic wineries, and a top spot for wine enthusiasts to explore on a yacht charter vacation.

New Zealand’s largest winemaking region, Tasman Bay, is located here in Marlborough Sounds. Tasman Bay features beautiful golden beaches along with 65 wineries and 290 grape growers. Wines from this region include Sauvignon Blanc (for which the region is most known), Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer.

Marlborough Sound Vineyard

There are plenty of local wineries to tour for tastings. Those who want to visit the more well-known wineries in the region can take a tour of Cloudy Bay Wineries and Oyster Bay Wineries. Cloudy Bay Wineries produces Sauvignon Blanc wines considered by many to be among the best in the world.

New Zealand Freshly Harvested Green Lipped Mussels

Freshly Harvested Green Lipped Mussels

We recommended bringing a bottle of your favorite selections back on board, where your private chef can craft the perfect meal featuring local cuisine, including local seafood. Pair a glass of Chardonnay with New Zealand green-lipped mussels and freshly-baked bread dipped in local olive oil and sprinkled with pink sea salt from Lake Grassmere, and luxuriate in the bounty of the Marlborough land and seas. It’s the perfect way to unwind onboard your yacht charter and fully experience all the area has to offer.

Additional details on some of the best wineries in the region can be found here , and we have also compiled more information on the best way to enjoy a Marlborough Wine Country via a private yacht charter.

On-board Accommodation*: $30 per person and $15 per under 16 yrs.

This enables you to stay on board your boat in its berth in the marina for the night before your charter, which starts at 1000hrs the next morning. Arrive here at the base between 1300 - 1600hrs, we'll meet you down at the boat and settle you in for a Safety, Loo's, Lights & LPG brief. You should have already read the PDF manual which is sent to you at the time of booking your charter. Then you and your crew can settle into the vessel for the evening and really familiarize yourself with all the vessels buttons, switches and systems as well as all the inventory and safety equipment. Then the next morning you receive a full "Safety & Systems" briefing starting no later than 0900hrs (usually 0830hrs) - we need your "1st Mate" present for this full briefing as well. The briefings can take from 1.25hrs to 2hrs to complete as we give a full area/moorings, safety and systems briefings for each vessel. You are then free to leave that morning. We do, when possible, complete the full briefing on the afternoon of arrival.

There is 1 restaurant, The Jolly Roger and the Waikawa Boating Club here in the marina only a short walk away. If you opt for this "onboard accommodation" option then your charter starts at 1000hrs and therefore handover is at 1000hrs on your final day.

Late arrivals: by prior arrangement and subject to availability . All briefings must begin no later than 1600hrs and any late arrivals after this will incur a "late arrival" fee of $55/hr. For example if you arrive at the office at 1730hrs then a late arrival fee of $82.50 would apply.

Extra Hours/Extensions: are available (up to 4 hrs) as an add on to any charter booked - by prior arrangement and subject to availability. If over 4 hrs then a full day rate is charged. How to work it out - divide the daily rate by 12 and that is the hourly rate for extra hours up to 4 hrs max. Please note that you will be charged a full day if you are more than 4 hrs from your original handover time.

Provisioning: Our base is in the Waikawa marina, approximately 5 minutes drive from Picton. There are "Fresh Choice" and a "Four Square" supermarkets in Picton. To save time on arrival we can arrange to have your provisions delivered prior to your arrival, just let us know and we'll send you a provisions list as a guide for ordering or send us a list (we use Four Square for this). There is a 10% surcharge with a minimum surcharge of $35 per order. There is a $40 loading fee for any deliveries to Compass Charters organised by yourselves (online shopping etc.)

Cleaning fee, bond maintenance and blocked heads/tanks: We ask for you to "bring the boat back as you found it" and appreciate that you are on holiday, so you can opt for our Compass Crew to clean your boat but we do charge for this service. Cleaning is charged at $50/hr, this usually takes between 1 and 3 hrs. Please let us know at time of booking if you would like us to clean the boat for you. NB: Any maintenance required due to any Bond issues is charged at $75/hr, unblocking of toilet and/or tanks is charged at $100/hr.

Relocation: Vessel relocations to/from Pelorus/Havelock for clients pre or post charter. Please contact us for a price. Indicative pricing - Vessel daily rate  plus  $500/day for the skipper  plus  travel costs for skipper to/from destination by road. Fuel is an additional cost, we will need to top up the fuel tanks after your charter and after the boat has been relocated. If you are towing runabouts then its your responsibility to ensure vehicle is adequate and fit for purpose including WOF of vehicle, tow bar size and lights all in working order etc. Relocations to other places also available. Please enquire for a more accurate costing.

Rebooking fee: $250.00 - This applies to confirmed charters that want to change their dates  and/or  change the boat booked, subject to availability. Any reduction in charter length or charter value incurs a charter cancellation fee. Conditions apply .

Picton / Waikawa marina transfer: Picton Shuttles MUST be pre-booked and payment made to them direct on the day. Contact Picton Shuttles : 0800 252520 or 03 573 7122 to make a booking.
