Larendael to Build 53-Hectare Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

By Jenna Mehdi

Dutch investment firm Larendael has announced plans to build a ‘Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus’ on its recently acquired 53-hectare shipyard in the western port area of Amsterdam. The Campus will host 40 superyachts up to 200m / 656ft in length for design, production, maintenance and refits.

Lauded for its ability to provide the optimum space required for the various stages of superyacht build, the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus will be built on the site of the former ADM shipyard - a leading Dutch shipyard active in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Campus is built around an ‘energy neutral’ goal, incorporating all construction facilities on site and all campus transportation done on bicycles and electric buggies. Boasting high-tech facilities such as a ‘multidisciplinary Experience Center’ , which offers visitors the superyacht lifestyle experience and introduces them to current industry trends, crew will also be catered to with relaxation facilities and luxury accommodation. The Campus will also be equipped with ‘R&D units and innovation labs’ in the aim of providing an environment for tech companies and think tanks to ‘come up with groundbreaking innovations for the yacht building industry’.

Ideally located for superyachts accessing via the North Sea, the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus will be built in phases; the first phase, involving preparation of the ground for construction, will begin in December 2021. Construction of quays and piers will begin in April 2022, with the final phase, construction of the Campus structures, commencing in December 2022.

"With the development of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are investing in the future of shipping in a place with a rich history." Wim Beelen, Creative Founder of Larendael

Larendael introduces Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

the most innovative location for the construction, refit and maintenance of superyachts

On the 42 ha shipyard acquired by Larendael at the end of August in the Western Docklands of Amsterdam, we are going to develop a campus where several superyachts up to 200 meters can be designed and built. Refits and maintenance of super yachts can also be carried out here, both from private owners and from other shipyards. Uniquely, the Campus will offer the opportunity to design and produce the entire yacht on site, as well as provide space for training.

Innovation is central to the concept of the Campus. We invest in facilities and technical resources to encourage collaboration where possible, with open innovation as the goal. Examples include the search for alternative fuels, but we also see opportunities to make the construction process and the materials used in the ships more sustainable.

Demand for superyachts increases

There are currently some 5,500 superyachts in the world and nearly 200 are added each year. There is particularly high demand from America, the Far East, Middle East and Eastern Europe. Our country has been known worldwide for centuries for its many boat builders. With our quality, reliability, innovation and design, the Netherlands also belongs to the world's top in building superyachts. Superyachts are also becoming increasingly larger. In the past five years, 67 superyachts with a length of more than 50 meters were built in the Netherlands alone. To be able to build and maintain these large super yachts, shipyards are needed that are easily accessible and have the right facilities.

Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus is easily accessible for superyachts via the North Sea Canal. A total of seven covered docks will be built, four large docks with a length of up to 200 meters and three large docks with a length of up to 155 meters. In addition, these dry docks will also be used for refits and maintenance of existing superyachts. A yacht elevator will be available for yachts up to 80 meters, allowing maintenance to take place ashore. Outside, there will be space for mooring 40 superyachts up to 200 meters long, with a water depth of up to 13 meters.

Wim Beelen (Creative Founder, Larendael):  "With the development of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are investing in the future of shipping at a place with a rich history, namely where the leading shipyard, the Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (ADM), operated in the 18th and 19th centuries."

Stimulating environment

With the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are creating an environment where craftsmanship, innovation and sustainability are central. By offering an increase in scale at a location that is accessible without restrictions - both via the water and via the land, we offer superyacht yards and suppliers every opportunity to further expand the Dutch competitive position in the superyacht industry not only in size but also in quality.

Wim Beelen , Creative Founder: In 2020, Wim Beelen sold the company he founded, Beelen, a sustainable contractor in the demolition sector, recycler of construction and demolition residues and processor of industrial waste. He changed course and started Larendael. The development of the sustainable last mile concept, the first multi-story xxl logistics city hub, in Amsterdam brought him back to the water. A place where he also likes to spend his free time, because water makes the world a lot bigger. At Larendael, he wants to stimulate and use the open-mindedness of the young generation. In addition, he wants to be primarily occupied with things that give him energy. Building projects from the ground up and making them into something beautiful and unique.

Larendael concludes: “With the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus we create an environment where craftsmanship, innovation and sustainability can flourish. By offering economies of scale at a location that is accessible without restrictions – both by water and by land – we uniquely provide yacht builders and suppliers a place for the expansion and enrichment of the Dutch competitive position in the superyacht industry, not only in size but also in quality”.

A Virginia couple is feared dead after three escaped prisoners stole their docked yacht from a Caribbean marina and fled to another island.

Ralph Hendry and his wife Kathy Brandel, who live on their yacht, Simplicity, were last seen by a boating neighbor on Sunday afternoon in St. George’s on the island nation of Grenada, as they headed to a restaurant.

The pair live on their boat during the winter and arrived on the island two weeks prior, intending to stay another week before they went missing.

“They went into town [on Sunday] to have a little bite and to walk back,” Hendry’s sister Suellen Desmarais  told WPTV-Tampa . “Somehow Ralph crossed paths in this teeny tiny town with these three men. What happened after that, we’re not sure.”

‘This was their whole life,” she added. “They didn’t own another home; they didn’t own cars; they owned Simplicity.”

Ralph Hendry and his wife Kathy Brandel were last seen by a boating neighbor in the St. George area on Sunday afternoon as they headed to a restaurant on the island nation of Grenada.

‘Ralph and Kathy are the kindest people in the entire world, and I just can’t understand how a tragedy like this could happen to people as kind and nice as them.”

Hendry and Brandel have sailed the same route for the past few years, from Virginia to Massachusetts before heading down to Florida to visit Desmarais, and eventually to the Caribbean where they would island hop,  according to ABC News.

They went missing the same day that three fugitives, Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 19, and Abita Stanislaus, 25, escaped the South St. George Police Station. The escapees then made their way to the marina, where they fled to another Caribbean island, authorities said.

They were subsequently captured on Wednesday in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Simplicity was recovered by authorities after a good Samaritan found it anchored off of a St. Vincent beach, where they boarded it and discovered the boat had been ransacked and "found evidence of apparent violence."

“The RGPF is currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process,” the Royal Grenada Police Force said in a press release.

“It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens.”

The suspects each face one count of robbery with violence. Mitchell, a sailor, was separately charged with one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape, two counts of indecent assault and causing harm.

The Simplicity was recovered by authorities after a Good Samaritan found it anchored off of a St. Vincent beach. When they boarded, they discovered the boat had been ransacked and “found evidence of apparent violence.”

Authorities spotted bloodstains in the interior but no sign of the couple,  according to People magazine .

Desmarais, however, is holding out hope the couple is still alive.

“It feels made up, and I just can’t comprehend why someone would do this?” she said. “Why didn’t someone just take the boat?

‘What happened in Grenada was a perfect storm. It was a perfect tragedy of a perfect storm of a perfect love story.”

She also  told Fox 5 DC,  “Why would I presume anyone is dead with no body and DNA? I want to remain positive. I want to believe that they are alive,”

Hendry and Brandel’s two children and Hendry’s nephew traveled to St. Vincent and the Grenadines to join the search for the couple on Friday, according to reports.

“This investigation is in its infancy stage and the RGPF have dispatched a team of senior investigators and a forensic specialist to St. Vincent in furtherance of this investigation,” the RGPF said.

Ron Mitchell, a sailor, was separately charged with one count of Rape, three counts of Attempted Rape, two counts of Indecent Assault, and Causing Harm.

Russia establishes special site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600

!{Model.Description}

A special production site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor under construction has been established at Russia’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant) in Elektrostal (Moscow region), part of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company.

As part of the project, MSZ had upgraded existing facilities fo the production of fuel for fast reactors, TVEL said on 3 March. Unique equipment has been created and installed, and dummy CFR-600 fuel assemblies have already been manufactured for testing.

The new production site was set up to service an export contract between TVEL and the Chinese company CNLY (part of China National Nuclear Corporation - CNNC) for the supply of uranium fuel for CFR-600 reactors. Construction of the first CFR-600 unit started in Xiapu County, in China's Fujian province in late 2017 followed by the second unit in December 2020. The contract is for the start-up fuel load, as well as refuelling for the first seven years. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2023.

“The Russian nuclear industry has a unique 40 years of experience in operating fast reactors, as well as in the production of fuel for such facilities,” said TVEL President Natalya Nikipelova. “The Fuel Division of Rosatom is fulfilling its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the development of fast reactor technologies. These are unique projects when foreign design fuel is produced in Russia. Since 2010, the first Chinese fast neutron reactor CEFR has been operating on fuel manufactured at the Machine-Building Plant, and for the supply of CFR-600 fuel, a team of specialists from MSZ and TVEL has successfully completed a complex high-tech project to modernise production,” she explained.

A special feature of the new section is its versatility: this equipment will be used to produce fuel intended for both the Chinese CFR-600 and CEFR reactors and the Russian BN-600 reactor of the Beloyarsk NPP. In the near future, the production of standard products for the BN-600 will begin.

The contract for the supply of fuel for the CFR-600 was signed in December 2018 as part of a governmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction and operation of a demonstration fast neutron reactor in China. This is part of a wider comprehensive programme of cooperation in the nuclear energy sector over the coming decades. This includes serial construction of the latest Russian NPP power units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors at two sites in China (Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs). A package of intergovernmental documents and framework contracts for these projects was signed in 2018 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Real estate | rainy, cold week ahead for bay area weather, real estate, subscriber only, real estate | santa clara tech campus lands leases, offering hope for real estate market, new leases total more than 100,000 square feet: cushman & wakefield.

Bassett Technology Park, a research and office complex at 3508-3580 Bassett Street in Santa Clara.

SANTA CLARA — A tech campus in Santa Clara has landed some new leases, stoking some hope for a wobbly commercial real estate market in the Bay Area that is being jolted by multiple setbacks.

Bassett Technology Park has landed roughly 101,000 square feet in new leases from two companies. A third rental deal that is a renewal of an existing lease amounts to transactions that together total about 175,000 square feet, according to Cushman & Wakefield, a commercial real estate firm that arranged the three transactions.

Here are the new rental deals in the tech campus, which is located at 3508-3580 Bassett Street in northern Santa Clara, according to Cushman & Wakefield brokers Steve Horton, Jon DeCoite and Kelly Yoder, the brokers who completed the transactions:

— EOTech signed a new lease totaling about 75,400 square feet. EOTech manufactures advanced optics sights and scopes.

— Evoloh signed a new lease that totals 25,600 square feet. Evoloh is a green technology firm.

The deals mean that a fund led by Texas-based Hines, a veteran and savvy real estate developer, is experiencing a success story with Bassett Technology Park.

“A fund sponsored by Hines had acquired the campus shortly after the beginning of the pandemic, with a belief in the long-term supply and demand fundamentals of this product type, which tends to remain resilient during economic downturns,” said DeCoite, a Cushman & Wakefield managing director.

The Hines-led fund bought the six-building tech campus in 2020.

“Bassett Technology Park’s strategic location in the heart of the Silicon Valley provides proximity to major tech companies, as well as the area’s strong high-tech talent pool,” DeCoite said.

Man suspected of killing nursing student on University of Georgia campus likely didn’t know her, police say

Jose ibarra, suspected of killing uga student laken riley, was denied bond saturday.

ATLANTA, Ga. ( WANF /Gray News) - A man facing murder charges in connection to the death of a nursing student on the University of Georgia campus was denied bond by a judge Saturday morning in Athens.

Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, faces charges of malice and felony murder, aggravated battery, kidnapping, concealing the death of another and several other charges in connection to the death of 22-year-old Laken Riley.

UGA Police Chief Jeffrey Clark said it is believed Ibarra, who lived in Athens but was not a U.S. citizen, did not know Riley.

“I think this was a crime of opportunity,” Clark said.

Laken Riley was found dead on the University of Georgia campus Thursday afternoon. She was a...

Riley was a student at August University’s College of Nursing in Athens. A friend of Riley called the university police on Thursday after she didn’t return from a run at the intramural fields. About 20 minutes into their search, police found Riley’s body in a wooded area behind Lake Herrick. She was pronounced dead at the scene, her cause of death believed to be blunt force trauma, according to law enforcement.

Police later announced foul play was suspected in her death.

On Friday, several law agencies took three people, including Ibarra , into custody at an apartment complex, just south of several trails that lead to where Riley’s body was found. Ultimately only Ibarra was arrested in connection to her death.

Police said that they are not searching for any more suspects but that they’re “work, however, is not done,” with Clark adding that investigators are still searching Ibarra’s apartment. Officers were also seen Friday afternoon searching a nearby dumpster while state troopers searched trash cans at a nearby bus stop and gas station.

Clark also reported there was no immediate threat of danger following the arrest.

Jose Antonio Ibarra

“This is heartbreaking. This a heartbreaking time for the university,” Jeffrey Clark, UGA police chief said.

The University of Georgia released a statement Saturday regarding Riley’s death, saying in part that Ibarra’s arrest does not “erase the fact that a vibrant young life was senselessly taken on our campus.”

According to the statement, Riley was a student at UGA before she transferred to Augusta University in May 2023 and remained active with her sorority at UGA.

“Many of you are understandably scared, and all of us are angry,” the statement said in part. The university also said they are aware that the “sense of safety” on campus has been violated and said it will take “hard work and vigilance to restore it.”

Riley’s death is the first homicide on the university’s campus in 30 years, according to the statement.

The university said that there is “no higher priority” than the safety and security of their students, staff and employees, and are evaluating their current safety measures.

“This is an ongoing and exhaustive effort,” the university said, adding that just earlier this week additional lighting improvements and security camera installations had been approved.

Augusta University also released a statement on Facebook, extending their “deepest sympathies” to Riley’s family.

“This sudden loss of one of our students is truly heartbreaking,” the university said. “Please keep Laken’s family, friends and fellow nursing students in your thoughts and prayers.”

A vigil will take place at 3 p.m. Monday a the Tate Student Center honoring Riley and another student who died on the UGA campus this week.

Why this Ethiopian navy officer ended up as a metro driver

yacht high tech campus

'I've seen everything there is to see overground'

yacht high tech campus

Tall, smiling Worku Bedasso is a bit of a legendary figure at the Moscow Metro. When asked how he ended up working here, he says noncommittally: "It just happened!"

In Soviet times, the young lieutenant of the Ethiopian Navy came here to study on an exchange program: first in Georgia in 1985, and a couple of years later in Azerbaijan. While Worku was learning how to build socialism, a civil war broke out in his native Ethiopia, and “old-school” officers were no longer needed by the new state. His wife and children remained in Ethiopia; they did not want to go to Russia. A few weeks later, the Soviet Union collapsed and foreign students based in Baku were sent to Moscow.

In Moscow, he was granted refugee status and issued with a work permit; however, during the 1998 economic crisis it was hard to find work. Then, his new Russian girlfriend, Olga, suggested he try working at a metro depot, since he was good with machinery. After six months of training, the former officer became a metro driver assistant.

“The first time felt strange and even scary,” Worku recalls. “But a military background helps. A metro driver needs to have stress tolerance, army discipline and a desire to work hard.”

While on the job, Worku enrolled at the Railways Institute (MIIT) to get a degree in engineering. However, it turned out that combining work and studies was too difficult and in 1999, he decided to quit the job...

By 2010, when he had decided to return to the Moscow Metro, Worku had been working for a logistics company in Moscow and Sochi, had married Olga and received a Russian passport. He once again had to make the journey from a driver assistant to a Category 1 driver, and looking back on it today, he is quite happy with his life: “It's fun to drive a train and get good money for it.” Furthermore, in all his years of working, he has never had any accidents: he attributes it to good luck.

That said, at the age of 62, he has started to think of ending his career as a driver and move to a job at a metro depot. “When you are young, you don’t feel the workload, but at my age it’s getting a bit hard! I don’t want to part with the metro. I have seen everything there is to see overground.”

'I’ve said everything about Dostoyevsky. But I’ve loved trains since I was a kid!'

Anton Khlynin studied Russian language and literature at Moscow State University and even spent a year and a half as a PhD student. But at some point, he realized it was time to stop. Anton seems a very serious man until he turns with his back to you and you see a biker's braid popping out from under the collar of his uniform.

“At university, I had a research topic that I thought was very interesting - the perception of Dostoevsky’s works in Scandinavian countries,” - says Anton. “He is the main writer there. I took it up with great fervor, but as I was writing my thesis, I found out that this subject had already been thoroughly researched by another academic. I was extremely disappointed.”

Academia no longer appeals to Anton, although he is still interested in literature: he even writes himself, albeit articles about railways. In 2007, he decided to fulfill his childhood dream and go work as an engine driver.

“I have been a fan of railways since the age of five. My first memory is seeing a locomotive on the tracks.”

yacht high tech campus

Anton is now 40 and he recently qualified as a 2nd grade driver, by coming in the top three places in a professional competition. Unlike his colleague, Worku, Anton has seen many emergency situations in his career.

“Once, a passenger fell on the tracks at Park Pobedy [station] (dark blue line), but I managed to hit the breaks in time. Also, there are diggers who are just looking for adventure,” says Anton.  “When I was a kid, I was a member of a railway modeling club, and then of a literary society. I had things to do. Whereas they, it seems, have nothing to do!"

Yet, despite everything, Anton insists he does not regret having changed his career so drastically, even though he admits seeing trains in his dreams, too. “I used to occasionally dream I was running a red light, or that my train was derailing. But now all that is gone and I sleep normally!”

When asked whether knowledge of literature helps him in his work, Anton replies philosophically: “My general level of education helps me in my life. And work is part of life.”

'I drive 2,000 people during rush hour!'

When you look at tall, youthful Vadim Kalugin, it is hard to believe that he is one of the oldest drivers on the Moscow Metro, a veteran of labor. Vadim is 55 years old, and he has spent most of his life underground. Now he is a 1st grade driver. He joined the Moscow Metro straight after returning from military service, on advice from his mother-in-law.

“She herself worked in the aircraft industry and knew what responsible work meant. And she liked the uniform that metro drivers had,” Vadim recalls. “By the way, we are sometimes called ‘underground pilots’. But a pilot carries 300 people on a plane, while I drive more than 2,000 people during rush hour! I think our job involves even more responsibility.”

yacht high tech campus

According to Vadim, the Moscow Metro is not only the most beautiful, but also the most reliable. “Even in the 1990s, during the economic crisis, when many people did not receive their wages, metro drivers were always paid on time and metro trains were on schedule. After all, if the metro stops, the whole of Moscow will stop.”

Vadim says that the main thing in his work is to strictly follow the instructions. “In the metro, everything happens at lightning speed! The driver has no right to make a mistake. In my 34 years of work, I have never had a single reprimand,” he says, adding that, sadly, he is still going to retire next year.
