A Salute to Jupiter’s 30 Years of Performance

Jul 9, 2019 | Jupiter Boats , Magazine , News | 0 comments

jupiter powerboats

Jupiter’s popularity has soared through the years thanks to a reputation for solid construction, yacht-grade fit-and-finish and even some celebrity recognition. As we celebrate with Jupiter on their 30 years of boat building and innovation, let’s take a closer look at how it all started and what truly makes each Jupiter boat special.

In 1989, a handful of offshore racing enthusiasts got together with a vision to take the best performing aspects of racing hulls and apply them to a fishing boat. The result was the very first Jupiter 31 center console fishing boat equipped with a bracket and outboard power. Although stepped hulls were gaining some popularity in the 80’s, this original hull form featured a deep-v forward with a generous sized hull “pad” in the center aft.

“…the boat will track straight with minimum effort at the helm.”.

Jupiter’s National Sales Manager, Lester Ares explains, “Jupiter’s founders originally figured out that if you build a much larger pad-bottom hull, the boat will track straight with minimum effort at the helm.” In contrast, hulls with a deep-v throughout the stern tend to shift more to one side or the other of the center of gravity. In the pad design, effortless straight-line tracking is joined by drama-free turns and exceptional handling. “These boats truly handle like a sports car on the water,” says Ares.

Growing and Evolving

The Jupiter nameplate was derived from the Jupiter Inlet on Florida’s Atlantic Coast. This inlet is at times treacherous and routinely puts both captains and their vessels to the test with a rough, unpredictable sea state. The original Jupiter 31’s unique hull pad bottom proved her place in the market on Jupiter Inlet’s tough passage. Over the next decade, the 31 garnered attention from celebrities and sportfishing enthusiasts alike while other models like the 21 Flats and 27 were introduced.

Jupiter’s original founders honed their skills in design and construction, but left much room for improvement on the business side of their operations. When Jupiter Marine fell into financial trouble, Carl Herndon swooped in to resuscitate the brand, seeing their incredible potential for success. Herndon’s experience included being the President of Bertram Yachts, and founding CEO of Blackfin Yacht Corp. He knew boats and he knew business management, and he was poised to catapult the Jupiter brand to the next level.

Over the next two decades, Jupiter expanded at their Fort Lauderdale plant before acquiring their current facility on the Gulf Coast in Palmetto, Florida. This plant has also undergone expansions to keep up with customer demand and the ever-evolving Jupiter product line which today spans from 25’ to 43’. “Even with seven models currently offered, including a bay boat and an sport bridge, Jupiter hasn’t deviated from the original Posi-stern Hull Pad Bottom that made us famous,” Ares explains.

Jupiter’s proven hull form can’t take all the credit for their 30 years of success though. Management expertise from Carl Herndon along with design and construction know-how from his son Craig have played a role in the company’s steady growth in the market. Jupiter has also progressed from serving a niche market to having an incredibly broad customer base that includes families, fishermen, owners of large sportfish boats and even superyacht owners.

Tried & True Performance

A Jupiter boat can dominate rough seas and provide comfort to her operator and guests while running to the fishing grounds or island hopping with the family—but the benefits don’t stop there. Many potential owners are blown away during a Jupiter sea trial when the throttles are pinned and the Yamaha outboards spring to life instantly putting the boat on plane within a couple seconds. The astounding performance of these boats cannot be summed up in a single word (colorful metaphors aside), mainly because so much goes in to making every Jupiter perform so remarkably well.

jupiter powerboats

Conventional stepped hulls are touted as being more efficient and faster, but these benefits are only available in a narrow band of higher RPM. Jupiter Marine’s Posi-stern Hull Pad Bottom offers stepped hull efficiency over a very broad range and is partly responsible for all Jupiter models being quick on plane. The other contributing factor to Jupiter’s performance and close-quarter handling are the Yamaha outboards perched beyond the transom.

Discerning Customers

Superyacht owners have sought out Jupiters for use as tenders largely for their superior fit and finish and semi-custom prowess. Jupiter’s Palmetto facility is equipped with a climate-controlled spray booth and full-time paint team that can color match a Jupiter model to her mothership or apply striking metallic topcoats and custom boot stripes to any model. Bluewater sales professional Bob Hoste explains, “Jupiter was one of the first guys in the bigger center console business, and their ability to work with customers so closely compared to other production builders has really helped set them apart through the years.”

Furthermore, owners of big sportfishing convertibles have been drawn to Jupiter’s larger models including the 41 Sport Bridge and 43 SF. These customers are seeking a smaller yet still very capable sportfisher that they can take out for a day of fishing or a run to the Bahamas in comfort. The 41 and 43 both offer yacht-grade interior appointments including different woods and soft goods to suit an owner’s tastes.

jupiter powerboats

A lesser-known option for Jupiter models includes their hard-core fishing package available on the 34 and 38. Jupiter’s hybrid forward seating (HFS) is removed from the bow and up to three livewells can be added to these models along with a tower and other fishing amenities for those looking to fish hard, on and off the tournament circuit.

Jupiter’s staying power and growth in the market—even through the rough times—can be traced back to their humble beginnings with a group of offshore enthusiasts developing a radical new hull design. Their passion for boat building can be seen in their superior construction techniques and desire to work with every customer to deliver the perfect boat. The Bluewater family congratulates Jupiter on 30 amazing years of boat building and cheers to many more!

The Anatomy of a Hull

To say a Jupiter hull is over-built may be an understatement. Jupiter adheres to all ISO standards and then triples that standard by laying up every hull to three times the required thickness. The transom and integrated engine bracket are made with a pourable ceramic compound that provides exceptional rigidity, stability and strength. This component is then married to the hull before vacuum resin infusion chemically bonds the two parts together to form one solid piece from pulpit to swim platform edge. At nearly 2 inches thick with multiple layers of glass mat and composite, a Jupiter hull is designed to never take a breach. All of this is done without using any type of balsa or other wood that could cause issues with rot in the future. Truly a hull for a lifetime.

Boat Test: 2023 Jupiter 40

  • By Jim Hendricks
  • April 10, 2023

Jupiter 40 running offshore

In a crowded field of 40-something center-console fishing boats, the Jupiter 40 stands out as one of the most impressive. It is also the first boat I’ve run with the new Yamaha 450 XTO V-8 outboards . Jupiter’s 40 features a conventional V-hull (meaning no steps) with a 39-foot-11-inch length overall, nearly 12-foot beam, 24 degrees of deadrise at the transom, and a Posi-Stern hull-pad design. Dry weight with engines is 16,000 pounds, yet we achieved a top speed of 57.3 mph while smoothly traversing tightly spaced 2- to 3-foot seas.

Interior and Accessories

Jupiter builds in durability with composite PVC coring (meaning no wood to rot), a fiberglass and foam-filled uni-grid stringer system, and vacuum-infused vinylester construction. Separating the transom bulkhead from the motors is a transom platform that lets you walk from one side of the boat to the other.

Anglers will love the 60-gallon pressurized transom livewell with a viewing window (and a seating pad and backrest), twin 100-gallon insulated fish boxes under the aft cockpit sole, a 126-gallon forward insulated fish box, and the port-side door that lets you slide aboard a big fish. There was also a 48-gallon cooler/bait freezer under the aft-facing bench abaft the three-across helm seats on our test boat.

Jupiter 40 transom seating

An inviting lounger for two adorns the forward console, and the bow features a pair of lounges with integral backrests. Accessed from the port side, the roomy console interior offers over 6 ½ feet of headroom, a 7-foot-long berth, a mini galley, a hanging locker, and a separate head compartment with a shower, vanity, sink and electric marine toilet.

A curved acrylic windshield complements the hardtop, and the dash features three Garmin multifunction displays—a 24-inch MFD in the middle and 16-inch MFDs on each side. There is also a helm compartment to starboard that lifts open to reveal the Yamaha Helm Master EX joystick. Even in a crowded field of 40-somethings, the Jupiter 40 is hard to ignore. Check one out, and you’ll see why.

How We Tested

  • Engines: Triple Yamaha 450 XTOs
  • Drive/Prop: Outboard/Yamaha XTO EC 16 3 / 8 ” x 22″ (outside); 16 3 / 8 ” x 21″ (center) 3-blade stainless steel
  • Gear Ratio: 1.79:1 Fuel Load: 500 gal. Crew Weight: 600 lb.

High Points

  • This big, brawny, 40-foot deep-V center-console is built to take on the biggest seas.
  • Composite materials (no wood) and resin-infused construction help ensure years of durability.
  • Console cabin with a 7-foot-long berth, galley and head provides overnighting comfort.
  • Full-height acrylic windshield is nice, but we’d like the option of a three-sided glass windshield for more protection from spray-laden winds on the beam.

Toughest Competitor

Regulator’s 41 (starting at $1,235,995 with quad Yamaha 425 XTOs) is another standout 40-something center-console. Like the Jupiter 40, it has a deluxe console cabin and a deep-V hull.

Jupiter 41 Sport Bridge Review

  • By Randy Vance
  • Updated: December 13, 2013

(Be sure to click through all the images in the gallery above.)

Jupiter Marine is a busy place, with workers laying multiple keels inside and waxing gleaming vessels outside. Todd Albrecht, vice president of sales, led me through the factory to the next new 41 Sport Bridge (click for video) that was taking shape.

Jupiter builds boats to order, and its clients are well-to-do, private people who might be pulling their offshore boats behind megayachts while underway to their favorite fishing waters in the Bahamas, the Caribbean or Bermuda. I got an eyeful of what made Jupiters solid, soft riding and perfectly tuned to the whims of any customer.

From there, Albrecht led me to Snead Island Boat Works near Tampa, one of the oldest and most historic marinas in the region, and one of the few to have covered slips in Southern climes. The 41 for my test rested there, in the shade.

Performance

The 41 Sport Bridge is pure proof that Yamaha knew U.S. boaters were looking for sexier power than old shaft-and-strut inboards. They wanted the fumes out of the cockpit, the rumble out of the salon, and the engines on the transom — where they’d make power, not crowd the living space on board.

The triple F350s are the bomb on the 41, and so is the Yamaha Helm Master joystick steering mechanism — Yamaha’s answer to the joystick-controlled pod drives that have pummeled the inboard market: Volvo Penta’s IPS and Mercury’s Zeus. Helm Master lets you ease down the channel with an occasional nudge, or slide into a slip like a pro, crabbing sideways by pressing the stick abeam or pivoting in place with a fingertip twist.

Out of port, I pushed the throttles. With a 320-gallon load of fuel, 60 gallons of fresh water, light gear and two men, the 41 powered up to 52.2 miles per hour. In the tightest turns, the boat rolled easily and confidently inboard, then it rolled back, crossing its own considerable wake with a whispering thud.

The high, glass-enclosed pilothouse is ideal for maintaining a lookout during maneuvers, providing an elevated sight plane, even as the inboard roofline dips toward the water. The 41 liked a good bit of trim to smooth the ride, but the tabs were really not necessary to level or plane with our load.

Fuel range can be extended by adding 60-gallon optional tanks — $3,950 each — a plan I’d recommend for Bahamas-bound anglers.

The 41 Sport Bridge I saw in the factory was undergoing surgery to remove the standard transom livewell when we walked through the line. It was headed for the Northeast — a region where anglers often don’t need such systems. But in my test boat, an ample sea chest ensured plenty of flow to the optional dual 45-gallon livewells, refreshed by 2,000 gph pumps. In the Southeast, if the livewell isn’t right, you aren’t really fishing.

Also good to go is the guttered cockpit. The design keeps the deck from becoming awash by quickly scuppering water overboard. The guttering also eliminates the need for toe rails. It adds security to the gaff man’s stance in a more natural way than toe rails; as he leans forward, his toes naturally catch the gutter, locking him safely against the gunwale as he works.

The deck space is ample and, if you’re of a mind, you could add a fighting chair, though most anglers opt for stand-up fishing, thanks to the tough braided lines and more-compact reels they allow. The hardtop is ready to accept outriggers, and the gunwales can handle all the rod holders you think you might need, if the six standard holders aren’t enough.

Design and Construction

In the factory, Albrecht pointed out glassed-in, sound-suppressing Silent Running floor mats. In the salon belowdecks, I found the mats worked nicely, softening the rush of water and the slap of seas.

On the command deck, the curved-glass windshield sports minimalistic support struts from deck to hardtop, giving a near-perfect panoramic view of the surrounding seas. Curved lines aren’t spoiled by handrails. Instead, sleek gutters have been cast in the top to offer secure grab points.

The joinery in the salon and berths would inspire woodworking artisans of the highest skill. Joints are tight, and the drawers and cabinets are evenly aligned. The wood tones are rich, complementing the granite counters.

The Simrad glass-helm-and-bus system that eliminates corrosion-vulnerable switch wiring enhances ease of operation and maintenance. With it the skipper controls pumps, lights and other systems through the glass panels of the display.

Jupiter’s building style is strongly established through decades of experience, and while its methods are set, its designs are flexible, allowing customers to replace livewells with settees, and mezzanines with cockpit galleys. That kind of individual style is everything to a customer looking for a personal yacht.

DeSantis deploys 250 officers, soldiers in Florida to stop illegal immigration from Haiti. What we know

jupiter powerboats

Amid the chaos and violence taking place in Haiti, Florida Gov. Ron DeSanti s announced steps he's taking to "stop potential influx of illegal immigration " from the Caribbean nation.

Located southeast of Florida, Haiti is about 600 miles from Miami. Boats of immigrants fleeing the country are common on Florida shores.

On Feb. 29, a boat carrying 24 men, women and children from Haiti was stopped in the Sebastian Inlet in what law enforcement authorities said was a disrupted smuggling attempt.

Smuggling attempt stopped: Smuggling attempt stopped in Sebastian Inlet; 24 Haitian people taken from fishing boat

Here's what you should know about what's happening in Haiti and DeSantis' announcement.

What's happening in Haiti?

Late Monday,  Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced plans to resign  while he was stranded in Puerto Rico.

Heavily armed gangs have taken control of and attacked the country's infrastructure, including Haiti's only international airport.

Henry said he would stay in his post until a transitional council is created and an interim premier named.

Over the weekend,  the U.S. military airlifted some nonessential personnel from the American Embassy .

Conditions are continuing to deteriorate in the country. The U.N. and other aid groups said food and water supplies are dwindling. The ongoing violence, a political crisis and a drought have left an estimated 5.5 million Haitians — roughly half the entire population — in dire need of humanitarian assistance,  according to the U.N.

“It is clear that Haiti is now at a tipping point,” Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said Monday. "We are deeply distressed it is already too late for too many who have lost far too much at the hands of criminal gangs.”

Henry's government declared a state of emergency after gangs attacked the country’s largest prison in Port-au-Prince, allowing about 3,500 inmates to escape.

US State Department lists Haiti as 'do not travel' destination

Haiti has been declared a Level 4: Do Not Travel destination by the U.S. State Department since before  the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 .

The Level 4 travel warning is "due to  kidnapping, crime, civil unrest , and poor health care infrastructure," the State Department said.

The  U.S. Embassy in Haiti repeated that warning on Sunday , urging Americans not to travel there.

'Lucky to get out': Author Mitch Albom among a group of 10 Americans rescued

Author Mitch Albom was among a group of 10 Americans rescued Tuesday from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Albom is a longtime columnist for the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network.

Albom had gone to Haiti to visit the  Have Faith Haiti Mission & Orphanage  he has run since a devastating 2010 earthquake ravaged the country's infrastructure and killed at least 100,000.

Others remain trapped in the country.

"Many other Americans, Canadians and others are still stuck in Haiti in an extremely volatile situation and they need help getting out and it seems very little is coming from our governments," Albom said.

The rescue was a collaborative effort between Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., who reached out to Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., an Army veteran who has played a role in getting Americans out of other countries in dangerous situations. McClain said she contacted Mills after failing to get any other help.

"We tried to use the government channels. ... We tried to go through the proper channels,” McClain said. “No one was calling us back. We couldn’t get any answers.”

What is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis doing to prevent illegal immigrants from Haiti?

In anticipation of a "potential influx of illegal immigrants from Haiti," DeSantis announced Wednesday he was sending additional assets to the Keys and Florida's southern waters.

“Given the circumstances in Haiti, I have directed the Division of Emergency Management, the Florida State Guard, and state law enforcement agencies to deploy over 250 additional officers and soldiers and over a dozen air and sea craft to the southern coast of Florida to protect our state.

"No state has done more to supplement the (under-resourced) U.S. Coast Guard’s interdiction efforts; we cannot have illegal aliens coming to Florida,” DeSantis said.

Manpower, equipment adding to Operation Vigilant Security in Florida

The additional personnel and equipment ordered Wednesday is in addition to the "security and surveillance assets" already in place as part of Operation Vigilant Security in South Florida and the Keys to stop illegal immigration at sea.

Here's the breakdown of what DeSantis will be sending:

  • Florida Department of Law Enforcement: 39 additional officers.
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: 23 additional officers with eight additional seacraft.
  • Florida National Guard: 48 additional Guardsmen with four additional helicopters.
  • Florida Highway Patrol: 30 additional officers with an additional aircraft and drones for surveillance.

Florida State Guard deployed to help stop illegal immigration

DeSantis also authorized the deployment of 133 soldiers with the Florida State Guard to the Keys.

DeSantis: Florida has a 'right and duty to defend its territory and people'

"Illegal immigrants feel empowered to enter the sovereign territory of the United States because of the federal government’s refusal to diligently enforce our immigration laws and protect the integrity of the border," according to a news release issued by DeSantis.

"When a state faces the possibility of invasion, it has the right and duty to defend its territory and people. Under Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida will act."
