First ever floating Ritz-Carlton hotel registered in Malta

The Ritz-Carlton Evrima is about to welcome its first guests

The first ship of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, the Malta-registered Ritz-Carlton Evrima, is about to welcome its first guests. After a three-year delay caused in part by the supply chain crisis, the superyacht hotel is finally about to set off on an inaugural seven-night cruise from Barcelona to Nice, starting on 15th October.

The floating luxury hotel can carry up to 298 passengers and 246 crew members. The high ratio of crew to guests allows the cruise to maintain the personalised experience the Ritz-Carlton is famous for, with every suite having access to a personal concierge as well as a separate concierge to organise trips ashore.

Douglas Prothero, founder and chief executive officer of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, told Bloomberg that the brand-name appeal helped in recruiting, a fact he puts down to the perceived potential to eventually transfer to a position with the same hotel group on land. He also noted that every position available was over-subscribed.

Mr Prothero was central to the Ritz-Carlton’s foray into the maritime business, with the Yacht Collection being a joint venture between the renowned hotel and his Yacht Portfolio, a maritime investment group.

The company has two additional 456-passenger yachts on order from France’s Chantiers de l-Atlantique, slated for delivery in 2024 and 2025.

According to Cruise Mapper , the Evrima cost €290 million to build.

ritz carlton yacht malta

The Evrima is one of the most highly anticipated luxury vessels ever, and Ritz-Carlton regulars have jumped at the chance to see what the superyacht has to offer.

According to Chris Gabaldon, senior vice president of luxury brands for Marriott International, Ritz-Carlton’s parent company, most reservations are from people who have never been on a cruise before, an indication of the brand’s appeal and of the underserved nature of its target market.

“We are moving into a space we believe many of the affluent consumers have wanted to go but have not had the brand to support them,” he said.

The 190-metre vessel was designed by maritime design firm Tillberg, from Sweden, in collaboration with the Ritz-Carlton team, and built in Vigo, Spain, by Astilleros Barreras Shipyard.

Mr Prothera is at pains to point out that the venture is not about providing a cruise experience, but about “taking Ritz-Carlton casual modern luxury to sea”.

Suites have ceiling higher than the norm for cruise ships, and feature private outdoor terraces overlooking the sea.

ritz carlton yacht malta

The Evrima has several features that would typically be found resorts, from a supervised programme for children to a spa, and has more space per passenger than any other luxury cruise ship, according to Mr Prothero.

“You can be as quiet as you want or get together in a crowd, and there are a number of ways to do that,” he says. At one secluded table for 10, you can host your own dinner party.

Other attractions include an infinity pool and dedicated marina for all kinds of water sports, with paddleboards, kayaks, sailboats, windsurf boards and snorkeling equipment available for guests.

The main restaurant’s menu is crcafted by Chef Sven Elverfeld of the three-Michelin-starred Aqua at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg, Germany, while Southeast Asian dishes and sushi are also available – and room service is available around the clock.

ritz carlton yacht malta

The uppermost of the Evrima’s 10 decks hosts an indoor and outdoor observation terrace serving as a social hub, serving cocktails and live entertainment every evening.

The itineraries on offer in the first years follow the yachting crowd around Mediterranean and Caribbean hotspots like Ibiza, St Tropez, Bequia, St Barts, Aruba and Tenerife.

Ritz-Carlton Ilma Itineraries

Ritz-carlton ilma review, review of ritz-carlton ilma.

The 2024-built Ritz-Carlton's Ilma cruise ship is the second of all three ultra-luxury expedition superyachts owned by Marriott International Inc (shipowner). The ship is operated by The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection (cruise brand and subsidiary of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company/ official website ).

The vessel (IMO number 9967586) will be Malta- flagged (MMSI tba) and registered in Valletta .

History - construction and ownership

Ritz-Carlton's cruise brand "The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection" is a Miami -headquartered (Coconut Grove) new company owned by Marriott International Inc via its subsidiary The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company LLC.

On June 22, 2017, the 5-star hotel brand Ritz-Carlton announced its privately-owned cruise line brand, with a planned start in 2019. The company's fleet consists of 3 newbuilds , with a shipbuilding option to expand to 5 vessels. Ritz-Carlton's cruise company was created by Douglas Prothero (CEO, founder of Canadian Maritime Group) and Lars Clasen (Managing Director, former President of AIDA Cruises ).

Ritz-Carlton Ilma cruise ship

On March 17, 2022, Ritz-Carlton officially announced signing the order with the French shipbuilding company Chantiers de l'Atlantique (shipyard in Sant-Nazaire ) for two LNG-powered superyachts - the sisterships Ilma (2024) and Luminara (2025).

The Ritz-Carlton deal with Chantiers de l'Atlantique was signed by Douglas Prothero (The Ritz- Carlton Yacht Collection's CEO), Tim Grisius (Marriott International's Global Officer for Mergers and Acquisitions, Business Development, Real Estate), Karim Khairallah (Oaktree Capital Management's and European Principal Group's Managing Director and Co-Portfolio Manager) and Laurent Castaing (shipbuilder's General Manager).

Initially, Ritz-Carlton planned a fleet expansion with two Evrima -like boats/sisterships, which were planned for deliveries in 2023 and 2024. The shipbuilding order for the second vessel was signed on May 31, 2019, with Hijos de J.Barreras (shipyard in Vigo Spain ) by Jose Garcia Costas (shipbuilder's President) and Douglas Prothero. However, due to the Coronavirus crisis and Barreras Shipyard's financial issues, these projects were both canceled and replaced with the bigger, France-built units.

Unlike Evrima (completed at Astander Shipyard in Santander Spain ), Ilma and Luminara are larger as both gross-tonnage/volume (46750 GT-tons, compared to Evrima's 26500 GT-tons), cabins (223 vs Evrima's 149) and max passenger capacity (456 vs Evrima's 298).

Ritz-Carlton cruise ship yacht

For the new superyachts' design were contracted AD Associates (London, England UK/yacht's interior design), Aivan ( Helsinki Finland /yacht's exterior design), and DPA Designers ( Miami Florida USA ).

Decks and Cabins

All Ilma cruise ship staterooms (224 total) are balcony suites with tall ceilings, and there are plenty of two-room accommodations featuring separate bedrooms. Triple and quad cabins are with convertible couches/sleeper sofas.

The boat has 10 decks , of which 8 are passenger-accessible and 6 with cabins.

Cabin categories are 8 (all suites) of which 2-room grades are Owner's, Concierge, Ilma, View, Panorama, and Grand, while Signature Suites (deluxe balcony) and Terrace Suites (standard balcony) are with a living and sleeping area.

The largest accommodations are Owner's Suites - sized 1035 ft2 (96 m2 indoor space) in addition to the huge terrace (sized 720 ft2 / 67 m2).

The ship has a total of 5x ADA cabins (for disabled passengers) which are all Terrace Suites and wheelchair-accessible.

Standard/complimentary amenities and services provided in all passenger cabins include custom-made King-size beds (non-convertible to single beds, premium sleeping system, custom-made for Ritz-Carlton linens, hypoallergenic pillows), smart HDTVs (infotainment system with Internet, movies-on-demand, Room Service ordering), seating area with contemporary furniture (mirrored dressing table, upholstered low stool, lounge cabinet with shelves, armchairs, coffee table), complimentary minibar (fully stocked to guests' preferences/upon request after boarding the ship), Espresso coffee machine (complimentary capsules /coffee and tea), direct-dial phone, alrm clock radio, wardrobe, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), 220-110 V power outlets, USB charging ports, complimentary WiFi Internet, complimentary 24-hour room service and in-cabin dining (ordering items from all onboard dining venues), dedicated butler (Personal Concierge assistant), full bathroom (double-sink vanity, separate WC toilet, two hairdryers, bathrobes and slippers, custom-made bath linens, luxury-brand bath products), individually controlled air-conditioning, LED lighting, modern light fixtures (recessed lights).

Ritz-Carlton cruise ship yacht (sundeck pool)

Above Sun Deck is the Helideck with a helipad (helicopter landing area) used in cases of emergency.

The superyacht has two infinity whirlpools/hot tubs (aft portside and starboard on Deck 5) and two swimming pools (one deep/aft on Deck 5, and one shallow/midship on Deck 10). Due to fire and safety regulations, most of the ship's spaces are sectioned off and subdivided, with metal walls dividing restaurants from lounges and bars. Ritz-Carlton ships pioneered an open floorplan concept ("fluid and transparent") designed to "break down the traditional boundaries between dining and drinking areas".

Ritz-Carlton Ilma Wiki

The Ilma vessel (STX France shipyard/hull number J35) was ordered by the Miami -based company Cruise Yacht OpCo Ltd and is currently scheduled for delivery in June 2024.

Unlike the Spain-built Evrima , Ritz-Carlton's sisterships Ilma and Luminara are France-built - by Chantiers de l'Atlantique SA (fka STX France) in Saint-Nazaire .

The yacht Ilma is powered by four Wartisla marine diesel engines (dual-fuel, models 2x 14V31DF + 2x 16V31DF) with total power output 34,8 MW (46670 hp). The diesel-electric propulsion is a PEM fuel-cell-battery hybrid (power output 19,4 MW / 26015 hp), with common rail fuel injection, providing better fuel efficiency at various speeds.

The vessel's physical construction/assembly officially started with the keel-laying ceremony held on March 22, 2023, at STX France. The special event was attended by Douglas Prothero (Ritz-Carlton Yachts' CEO) and Arnaud Le Joncour (the shipyard's Senior VP of Sales & Marketing).

The ship was launched/floated out from drydock on September 29, 2023. The ceremony was attended by executives from Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection (Jim Murren/CEO and Executive Chairman, and Ernesto Fara/President and CFO) and from STX France (Laurent Castaing/General Manager, and Arnaud Le Joncour/Senior VP of Sales & Marketing).

The name ILMA means "water" in Maltese.

Inaugural cruise itineraries (2024)

The next table shows Ilma's maiden voyage (6-day Eastern Mediterranean/Aegean itinerary) currently scheduled for Sept 19, 2024.

Prices started from US$7400 (EUR 6860/GBP 6050) per person with double occupancy.

The next table shows the ship's inaugural Transatlantic crossing from Europe to the Caribbean (13-day itinerary), priced from US$8100 pp.

Ritz-Carlton ship technology

The superyacht Ilma is LNG-powered and with electric propulsion system consisting of two Azipods (by ABB) with total power output 19,4 MW (26015 hp). Azipod-D are 360-degree rotating/azimuthing thrusters ideal for smaller-sized vessels as they require lower installed power. The unit's electric drive motor is installed in the pod and submerged outside the hull, thus allowing more space for passenger cabins. The patented Azipod system also produces less vibration. The thrusters have the ability to turn 360 degrees which increases the ship's maneuverability and allows access to ports without the need for tugboat assistance.

The Azipods are part of ABB's medium voltage power plant. It also includes sensors producing real-time data that can be tracked from land-based facilities operated by both ABB Operations Centers and the customer. The Azipod thruster is approx 10% more fuel-efficient in comparison to shaft line propulsion systems. This results in a significant reduction of the vessel's operating costs and emissions. The lack of traditional rudders also allows the hull's hydrodynamics to be optimized.

"ABB Ability" is a remote diagnostic system using Microsoft Azure (cloud computing). It monitors the vessel's electrical systems and is connected 24-7 to ABB's infrastructure ashore. The system monitors all linked devices and sends real-time data analytics for maintenance (predictive and planned) and online support.

In late-September 2018, ABB contracted Raytheon Anschutz (Singapore-based manufacturer) to provide the ship's Integrated Navigation System "Synapsis NX" (bridge and navigation equipment). Synapsis NX includes autopilot, track control, radars, navigation sensors, communications, multifunctional navigation workstations (with software).

The first Ritz-Carlton yacht ( Evrima ) had an initial building cost / as ordered EUR 190 million (USD 225 million). During the vessel's construction, due to design changes, the cost reached EUR 240 million (USD 260 million) and the delivery was rescheduled from November to December 2019. In August 2019, the Spanish shipbuilder (Astilleros Barreras/ Vigo ) demanded an additional EUR 50 million (USD 55 million) to finish Evrima.

Ritz-Carlton's 3-ship-fleet project's equity investor is Oaktree Capital Management ( Los Angeles USA -based global investment management firm). The shipbuilding order was supported by CESCE Espana ( Madrid Spain -based commercial risk management company/world's 4th-largest, also ECA-Export Credit Agency) and CaixaBank SA (fka Criteria CaixaCorp - one of Spain's largest banks).

The deal with CESCE covered the Evrima yacht's cost overruns, secured the construction of Ritz-Carlton's second vessel, and also saved the Astilleros Barreras shipyard from bankruptcy.

In April 2022, the French shipbuilder contracted ABB to supply both yachts' (Ilma and Luminara) electric propulsion systems and year-round predictive maintenance and remote support of the machinery. The ordered packages included two Azipod units (power output 5,5 MW each) allowing high maneuverability (in both ports and at sea) as well as low vibrations and minimal noise during navigation.

In June 2022, the shipbuilder contracted ALMACO Group (turnkey manufacturer serving the marine and offshore industries) to design, produce, deliver, install and fully equip the ship's galleys/kitchens (1200 m2 / 12917 ft2), provision storage areas (525 m2 / 5652 ft2), laundry areas, and the refrigeration system/machinery. Ritz-Carlton contracted ALMACO for lifecycle services consisting of scheduled maintenance and spare parts supply.

In August 2022, the shipbuilder contracted BIO-UV Group (French manufacturer specializing in water treatment solutions based on ozone, advanced oxidation and ultraviolet light) to provide the sisterships Ilma and Luminara with ballast water treatment systems. The system (BIO-SEA/series B02-190) combines mechanical filtration with high dose of ultraviolet light for disinfection without chemical treatments. BIO-UV Group's equipment has max water treatment capacity 190m3/h and is based on 2x UV reactors. All cruise vessels constructed by Chantiers de l’Atlantique since 2015 are fitted with BIO-UV's BIO-SEA systems.

ritz carlton yacht malta

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection unveiled its summer 2025 itineraries across its fleet, Evrima , Ilma , and Luminara , marking an exciting moment as the company opens bookings for the inaugural season of its third superyacht. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection debuted in October 2022 with the launch of Evrima , the first time a luxury hospitality brand expanded into the cruising category. With all three superyachts now open for reservations, the brand extension continues to build on its success signifying continued growth and offering more opportunities for luxury travelers to enjoy unforgettable getaways at sea.

“A standard in luxury cruising was set in 2022 with the introduction of Evrima , the first of our Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection fleet, marking our expansion into the yachting category,” said Tina Edmundson, President, Luxury, Marriott International. “In a short time, our world-class itineraries have attracted guests who are new to the category and interested in exploring new horizons and cultures with the assurance of The Ritz- Carlton brand. We are thrilled to have created experiences that redefine luxury cruising. Endless explorations await as we prepare to launch our second yacht, Ilma , in 2024, and our third, Luminara , in 2025.”

"With Luminara , we are not just adding another superyacht to our fleet; we are expanding the horizons of ultra-luxury travel," stated Jim Murren, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. "This growth embodies our unwavering dedication to exploration, enrichment, and the pursuit of extraordinary experiences for our guests. Luminara is an invitation to embark on remarkable journeys and discover the world's most captivating destinations with unparalleled amenities and service."

The Inaugural Season of Luminara Inspiring curiosities and celebrations, Luminara , derived from Latin origin and meaning “light,” will measure 794 feet (242 meters) and accommodate up to 452 guests. In addition to 226 spacious suites, each boasting a private ocean-view terrace, a higher percentage of upper-suite categories, and superior guest amenities, the onboard experience will feature world-class dining, a wine vault, The Ritz-Carlton Spa®, and an expanded marina providing direct access to the sea. Among its range of upper-suite categories will be a new expansive accommodation, The Residential Suite, promising a collection of offerings that caters to a variety of preferences.

Luminara will embody contemporary craftsmanship and refined interior finishes envisioned by AD Associates, a renowned London-based architectural and design firm, with creative direction by Chapi Chapo Design, an internationally acclaimed Toronto-based luxury design firm, and celebrated lighting designer DPA. The yacht’s sleek and graceful exterior design, expertly envisioned by Helsinki-based design studio Aivan, draws inspiration from the elegant aesthetics of private yacht design. Inspired by light and luminescence, Luminara 's design emphasizes elegance and sophistication. Its layout, featuring explorative passages and favoring circular silhouettes over geometric edges, creates a seamless design, forming a sense of limitless space in each area. A serene color palette of soft brown oak, Calcutta marble, leather accents, and touches of rich red, navy, and green will provide an elegant oasis at sea.

The 2025 Summer Season The summer season spanning from April to October 2025 presents a curated selection of 53 itineraries, featuring new ports of call, standout shore excursions, and an inaugural experience – nine exclusive voyages aboard Ilma in Northern Europe. The vessel will be equipped with four Wärtsilä 31DF dual-fuel engines along with one selective catalytic reduction system for each engine to reduce the nitrogen oxide levels in the engine’s exhaust gas.

Fine Dining will offer a speciality dining experience with cuisines inspired by Europe’s Michelin-starred restaurants. Talaat Nam located on deck four will feature Southeast Asian cuisine. The Pool House will be an open-air poolside eatery.

Mistral, located on deck 10, will offer a Mediterranean-inspired menu, while the Living Room will serve coffee and pastries in the morning and transform into a bar in the evenings. The yacht will also have in-suite dining options for guests.

First ship of Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection to make its debut on October 15

After a delay of almost three years, the first ship of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is set for its debut.

The 190-metre Evrima , which can accommodate 298 passengers in its 149 suites, will carry its first guests on a seven-night cruise from Barcelona to Nice on October 15.

It will sail to various destinations depending on the season, including the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Central America and South America, Ritz-Carlton said.

The size of the vessel allows the yacht to reach locations typically not accessible to larger cruise ships, the company added.

“It’s taking Ritz-Carlton casual modern luxury to sea,” founder and chief executive of Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Douglas Prothero said.

Designed by Swedish maritime architecture and design company Tillberg, the Evrima offers eight different suites to customers — owner’s suites, view suites, grand suites, loft suites, signature mid suites, signature suites, terrace mid suites and terrace suites.

Potential customers can request a quote by entering their details on the company’s website. The site said taxes, fees and port expenses of $265 per passenger are additional.

Prices for the seven-night journey start at $7,600 per person, according to Latte , a luxury news portal.

Originally scheduled for a February 2020 launch, this was delayed a number of times. This year, the Evrima was due to debut on August 6, but this was pushed back to August 31 and then October 15.

The company said delays were caused due to the Covid-induced global supply chain frictions and difficulties in procuring certain essential materials necessary for the final stage of finishing.

The global yacht market is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 5.4 per cent from 2022 to 2030, from $8.5 billion in 2021, according to Grand View Research.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is a collaboration of Marriott International’s Ritz-Carlton brand, Oaktree Capital Management and maritime expert Mr Prothero’s Yacht Portfolio — a Malta-based maritime investment group.

Guests will enjoy “a range of programming including a thoughtfully curated menu of spa treatments, watersports from the yacht’s marina and Evrima’s signature restaurant and the three Michelin-starred restaurants”, the company said.

In each destination, guests can choose from a selection of experiences within the “shore collection” that align with their interests or utilise the services of the “concierge ashore” to customise their private tours, it added.

“We are moving into a space we believe many of the affluent consumers have wanted to go but have not had the brand to support them,” Bloomberg quoted Chris Gabaldon, senior vice president for luxury brands at Marriott International, as saying.

“The millions of Ritz-Carlton customers are ready for the next innovation of the brand, and they are demonstrating, in terms of bookings, that they are willing to come with us.”

The competition in the luxury yacht industry is brewing, industry experts say. AFP

In March, the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection also announced the expansion of its fleet with the addition of two newbuild superyachts, Ilma and Luminara , scheduled set sail in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

Competition is brewing in the industry.

Last month, Four Seasons announced its latest project — Four Seasons Yachts — that is expected to deliver its first vessel by the end of 2025.

The 207-metre-long, 14-deck vessel will offer nearly 50 per cent more living space per guest compared to what is currently in the market, Four Seasons said.

This will allow guests ultimate privacy, flexibility and spaciousness in an all-suite “nautical residential setting”, it said.

A Wave of Luxury Superyachts Offer a More Intimate Way to Cruise

By Jessica Puckett

Virgin took a gamble when it entered the cruise space in 2021, but it clearly paid off: Virgin Voyages ranked as your No. 1 Large Ship this year, thanks to its sultry Roman and Williams–co-designed interiors and memorable touches like an onboard tattoo parlor. Now other beloved hospitality brands are following its lead in smaller spaces, transporting their signature amenities and distinctive design ethos to more intimate mega-yachts on the high seas.

Take the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection (No. 11 in Small Ships; see complete list here ), which debuted Evrima in October 2022. Once aboard, Ritz-Carlton loyalists are surrounded by familiar details like sleek design and mindful spa therapies. The yacht's 149 staterooms have the same cloud-like Frette linens found in the hotels, and the double-vanity bathrooms are stocked with Diptyque toiletries. Restaurants also pay homage to the brand's celebrated culinary offerings: The menu at S.E.A., for instance, is masterminded by chef Sven Elverfeld, who helms the three-Michelin-starred restaurant at Germany's Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg . A second yacht, Ilma, will launch next year, followed by another in 2025.

An aerial of a cruise ship.

Last year, Virgin Voyages brought its unique brand of onboard entertainment to a second vessel, Valiant Lady.

While Belmond has long been a player in the river-cruise space with its Les Bateaux Belmond boats in France (a swish new barge, Coquelicot, A Belmond Boat , began plying waterways in Champagne this summer), Ritz's venture is transforming the ocean-travel experience, allowing guests to feel as if they're holidaying on a private vessel. Voyages call upon fewer ports—guests jaunt through yachting playgrounds like Bodrum, Turkey; Malta; Dominica; and Guadeloupe—but linger in each setting. These slower-paced routes are a fresh way for hotel groups to expand to destinations where a property doesn't already—and may never—exist, giving guests access to new regions with all the hospitality of the brand they love.

And there's much more to come: Four Seasons Yachts sets sail in 2025 with 95 suites; the largest, at 9,600 square feet, will have a spa and a wading pool. In 2026, all eyes will be on Aman as it launches a sleek seafaring extension of its tranquil resorts in the form of a vessel that, for now, is being referred to by only the intriguing moniker Project Sama . The 50-suite yacht will accommodate just 100 guests and have a Japanese garden, a swim club, and—of course—a luxe spa.

What matters most to discerning travelers is that these yachts are as exclusive and bespoke as their favorite properties on shore. No detail is too niche for private concierges to tackle with aplomb—whether it be unpacking your suitcase just so or making sure your favorite cocktail magically appears in your suite. The amenities extend to land, with customizable excursions awaiting guests in port—though no one would blame them if they ended up choosing to stay onboard.
