Greg Norman’s Yacht Makes Skyscrapers Look Small

At 285 feet long, Greg Norman’s new yacht is like his own personal portable island – or country. Possibly the largest aluminum yacht ever built, the $70 million “Aussie Rules” was built by Oceanfast and features anything you could want.

“Included in that price tag is a $1 million home theatre, two hyperbaric chambers (to restore your breath after you find out how much this thing costs!), seven auxiliary boats (in this case, one being a sportfish yacht that looks the size of a dingy in comparison!), several jet-ski’s, a work-out gym and rumor has it… some 200 fishing rods,” according to the Boatcatch Facebook page.

Whether or not this thing comes with an 18-hole golf course built in, I know who I want to invite me on their next fishing trip.

Update: Over the years, Norman has owned a veritable armada of sport-fishing vessels and pleasure cruisers.  The yacht no longer belongs to Norman; he sold it for a reported $77 million. But don’t think he couldn’t buy another if he wanted. Bottom line: If you want to travel the seas like this Shark, you’re going to need a bigger boat.

Exterior space in Greg Norman's house in Florida

Golf icon Greg Norman has shared a glimpse into his oceanfront Jupiter Island home on Florida's palm-tree kissed Treasure Coast. The 8-acre private estate is surrounded by water that stretches from the Intracoastal Waterway to the sun-glazed beaches of the Atlantic. But, while the coastal setting blesses the home's exterior, the interiors are no less impressive.

Designed by Greg's interior designer wife, Kirsten Norman, the house draws inspiration from luxury yacht interiors, which pays homage to Florida's shores throughout the property through its distinctive nautical light fixtures, dark wood features, and stylish shell accessories.

Gregory John Norman, who is best known as Greg, has now retired as a professional golfer. The Australian-native spent 331 weeks as the world's Number 1 Official World Golf Rankings ranked golfer throughout the 1980s and 1990s and has won 89 tournaments, including The Open in 1986 and 1993 and 20 PGA Tour tournaments.

He is now the chairman and CEO of the Greg Norman Company and has business in companies in interior design and real estate, among other design and sports industries.

The globally recognized figure and his wife curated their home to reflect their passion for travel and memories of their favorite trips throughout their interiors. This theme is mirrored throughout the chic open-plan wooden kitchen and art-filled living and dining area. Other notable rooms include the bathrooms, exclusively fitted with Drummonds' bathroom ware, including large free-standing tubs and shower cubicle.

The bathrooms were purposefully designed to reflect boutique hotels, combined with elegant English design, as a subtle reminder of the couple's years living in London.

Kirsten shares how she chose Drummonds' fittings after searching for something that 'you don't see too often.' She adds how she was drawn to the products because they are 'very distinctive and unique.'

Alongside the main home, the estate contains seven smaller buildings, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and a lush garden facing the ocean. We also have no doubt that there is a golf course somewhere in the very close vicinity of this sporting legend's home.

Step Inside Greg Norman’s Former Estate on Jupiter Island

The golf legend and his wife, interior designer kiki norman, give the ultimate tour of the stunning florida property that she designed to be their forever home.

Setting out to make a forever home is generally filled with all kinds of twists and turns. But for golf superstar Greg Norman and his interior designer wife, Kirsten known as “Kiki,” plans went as smoothly as one could imagine for a two-year renovation, during which they lived in their guest house. To meet their specific needs, they tore down their existing South Florida estate on Jupiter Island and built from the ground up, with Kiki taking into consideration everything from the big picture to the tiniest detail.

A nod to island living, the home’s design is in synch with the way the Normans like to live. “He loves being by the water, being on the beach, fishing, surfing, scuba diving, all those things,” says Kiki of her husband, who was ranked the top golfer in the world for 331 weeks. “He loves just walking around the house barefoot.” For Kiki, it’s clear that the mission is to achieve a comfortable version of aesthetic perfection.

To achieve their vision, the Normans worked with Kevin Asbacher of Asbacher Architecture in Palm Beach. “The directive was a New England, sort of Nantucket style on the outside, but Tropical Modern on the inside,” Kiki explains. “We really wanted it to feel like a coastal beach home, but with a more European flair.” While the designs of Liaigre were an inspiration, an even bigger influence may be her husband himself. “When I design personal spaces, I always have Greg in mind,” says Kiki. “Greg is very masculine, but he’s very also barefoot and elegant at the same time.” To reflect that, Kiki curated a color palette that lives up to that masculinity while making strong statements with photography, art, and comfortable-yet-sculptural furniture.  To bring life to the hushed-yet-bold palette, Kiki focused on bringing in lots of texture with “rich, earthy finishes and a lot of cabinetry.”

Kiki brings to these design decisions decades as an interior designer specializing in hospitality—having designed major hotels around the world in cities including Cairo and Zurich—as well as her global point of view having lived in eight different countries. That experience in hotel design has informed every aspect of how she shapes a home. “I always approach every design project from the point of view of a guest walking in the front door. What do they see first? Where are they getting their cocktail? Where are they putting their cocktail? And where are they sitting?,” she explains.

That thoughtfulness in her design comes across in every inch of the 32,000-square-foot estate. And for all the home’s sophistication and polish, there’s still a welcoming and comfortable air, the feeling of a place where the entire family and grandkids can have fun. “I take great joy in creating spaces where people can congregate with enough seating for everybody,” she says. “There’s lots of little pockets around the house where you can sit and have different moments and experiences.”

greg norman yacht interior

Staying true to her experience in hospitality design, the first thing that greets guests when they walk through the door is a well-appointed bar. “When we’re entertaining, I want guests to pick up a cocktail as soon as they walk in the door.” Kiki says this flow mimics that of a hotel where guests walk through a lobby lounge on the way to the main bar, which in this case lies outside just beyond doors that slide open for an indoor-outdoor feeling.

Of course, any home of a golf legend, especially one who has won 91 professional tournaments, needs a special place to display a multitude of trophies. “We designed the library for hosting dinners that revolve around golf,” shares Kiki, who works in as head of the Norman Design Group , which includes properties in Mexico, Colombia, Florida, and Colorado. The room with its extensive shelving acts as a museum for Greg’s numerous trophies and memorabilia, but the space easily transforms into a dining room, especially used to host guests who have won dinners with Greg at charity auctions. “That room was designed to dazzle any golf fan who comes for dinner.” In addition, there’s a formal dining room, which seats 14, around an expandable yacht-style table with an Apparatus chandelier above. Another important room is Greg’s office, which features a photograph taken by François Nars in Tahiti, a place for which the Normans have a shared obsession. “I thought that that photograph pretty much summed up Greg and his office,” she says.

“Greg’s the easiest client on Earth, because he trusts me 100 percent” Kristen "Kiki" Norman

But the house’s design isn’t just a reflection of their personalities, it’s also filled with interesting ideas for anyone no matter their golf handicap. For the kitchen, Kiki worked with Siematic for sleek cabinetry in olive green. To warm up the area, she added three Ralph Lauren pendants about the island, which is accompanied by Liaigre barstools. The kitchen also has a pair of yacht-style tables perfect for breakfast that can be joined into one long table for big family meals. Another interesting idea: In the primary bedroom, Kiki pulled the Ralph Lauren bed away from the wall, so that it floats in the room and maximizes the views of the Intercoastal Canal.

Despite everything that went into what they thought was going to be a forever home, the couple and her two daughters only lived there for six months before they sold it. During COVID-19, they made the decision to downsize and move to Greg’s native Australia. However, plans unexpectedly changed, and they instead relocated to Florida’s nearby Palm Beach Gardens around the time Greg took on the role of CEO and commissioner of the LIV Golf League.

“It was a really beautiful house. There’s some regret that we sold it, but I’m essentially happy to move on to the next project too,” reflects Kiki.  And with her husband as her client, the result is bound to be just as dazzling. “Greg’s the easiest client on Earth, because he trusts me 100 percent.”

Greg Norman's 87ft Oceanfast Aussie Rules for sale

Aussie rules, the 87ft oceanfast sportfish designed for expedition fishing, now for sale on our sites.

We have to go back 20 years to when our Marine Editor was a callow youth to recount the launch of this stunning 87ft luxury Oceanfast Sportfish built in Western Australia for Greg Norman.

It was circa 1996 and David Lockwood was bestowed the honour of being the first and only Australian journalist to drive this impressive boat, designed with Greg "The Shark" Norman's considerable input.

The 87 footer was intended to spearhead a range of long-range Norman Sports Classic line game boats from 80-120 feet built by Oceanfast.

"I drove Aussie Rules fast down Sydney Harbour at daybreak, the MTUs roaring, the sound system blaring — some of the crew hadn't slept that night and the party was still going — as the towering boat in blue livery with red boot stripe cut an impressive figure before the weary Sydney ferries just booting up," he says.

"It might be two decades ago, but this was a highlight of a boating hack's career. I can close my eyes now and still feel the power... and the energy of the crew including "Flash" partying hard at 5.30am."

Those twin 1500hp MTU engines, and a 18,000-plus litre fuel supply, were central to this boat's design intent — expedition fishing, with luxurious living accommodations for extended periods on the ocean.

The boat has a 28-knot top speed (Lockwood says he reached that on the throttles), cruised at 23 knots and had an 800-1000nm range. Coming out of production US sportfishers, Norman wanted the ability to fish distant locations and Aussie Rules has apparently seen some of the world's hottest fishing spots over the years.

The custom fishing equipment includes a giant winch facing the transom door, huge fish box, lighted aquarium wells, Rupp triple spreader 41' outrigger, bait freezers, Murray Brothers helm chair, aft station, transom fish door with dive access and swim out, Marine Metal Fabrications tower and more.

The watersports and dive gear includes scuba gear storage, cockpit entrance, dive tank storage, bar fridge with ice maker, BBQ grill, rod stowage compartment under lounge, external head and shower and so on.

As things eventuated, this boat was the only model in the adventurous Norman Sports Classic line produced by Oceanfast Marine Group, one of Australia's largest shipbuilders at the time. The promising venture intended to build luxury sportfishers from 80 to 120 feet in length, but Oceanfast ran into financial trouble.

Norman believed there was a market for bigger sportfishers — time has proven him right — and he believed that he knew what people wanted in them.

Back in the mid-90s, Oceanfast CEO John Farrell told the Florida-based newspaper The Sun-Sentinel that Norman (who preferred to fish stand-up tackle) had firm ideas of what he wanted in his boat.

"All of the boats will be built with Greg Norman's name on them and with Greg Norman's input. Norman's influence will be most evident in the boat's size, lines and cockpit area.

"Greg is fanatical about the cockpit layout, the height of the combing, the location of the baitwell," Farrell said back then. "He also has a particular idea on style."

Aussie Rules was the showboat for the range that never eventuated. As such, it has a long list of features and equipment that you won't find on a production vessel. The loaded boat was selling for US$4.9m at the time, but has returned to the market with a US$1.89m asking price two decades later.

Now newly refitted, the interior sleeps 10, plus crew, while the decor — originally Australian silky oak — and updated AV electronics throughout the vessel are said to result in a fresh atmosphere.

At the time Lockwood drove it, Norman's captain Gary Stuve, who skippered The Shark’s boats for six years, said: "You're not going to catch a world-record blue [marlin) on 12-pound line, but it handles good enough that you can catch fish in it."

Inside Tiger Woods’s Luxe Real Estate Portfolio

By Joyce Chen

Tiger Woods is a decorated professional golfer who has won 15 major championships.

All products featured on Architectural Digest are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Tiger Woods’s talent on the golf course has been unstoppable ever since he first broke onto the scene in the late 1990s. Along with his professional success came an appetite for luxury real estate. The pro athlete has come a long way since growing up in the Orange County suburb Cypress, California; he has now owned properties in California, Florida, the Bahamas , and Canada. At one point, it was even rumored that Woods owned a custom-built home on a 62-acre private island in Sweden, but that story has since been debunked. This rumor likely started because the island was reportedly purchased by a Swedish businessman in 2006 for the explicit purpose of being developed into a retreat for Woods and his then wife Elin Nordegren. (The couple split in 2010 after Woods was found to have numerous extramarital affairs, and the deal was never finalized.)

Here, we’ve rounded up some of the places that the golfer has called home over the years.

Woods’s first big purchase was also the beginning of his expansive real estate portfolio in Florida. He paid an undisclosed amount for the 8,000-square-foot Spanish-style home in the exclusive Isleworth community in Windermere, Florida, just as his stardom was on the rise. A big draw for the athlete was the privacy the place offered. “Once we get inside the gates of Isleworth, you can take a deep sigh of relief,” Woods told the Orlando Sentinel in 2006. “... There’s a no-autograph policy, no pictures, no nothing. We all just mingle.” Woods lived there alone, and then with Nordegren after the pair got married in 2004, until their divorce in 2010. The home is now perhaps better known as the site of Woods’s infamous 2009 car crash shortly after reports of his infidelity surfaced. Woods later sold the two-story waterfront home to fellow golf pro Bubba Watson for $2.2 million in 2013.

Woods stayed close to his California roots with the purchase of a $3 million vaguely Mediterranean-style condo in Newport Beach. The two-story pad measured around 2,000 square feet and featured three bedrooms. Importantly, there were views of the ocean and Catalina Island from just about every room, with a spacious patio and balcony to boot. The pro golfer listed the home at a loss —$2.49 million—in 2012, but it’s unclear when or whether the property actually sold, and for what price.

Also in 2004, Woods shelled out $20 million for a 155-foot yacht he cheekily named Privacy . The behemoth boasts three floors, including an observation deck, with five bedrooms that can easily sleep up to 10 guests. (According to Golf , it takes nine crew members to man the yacht, with the crew occupying separate living quarters.) Among the ship’s many amenities are a jacuzzi, a gym, a wet bar, and a decompression chamber for scuba diving. Woods still owns the yacht, and has been known to sleep aboard it before major championships. When not out at sea, it is typically docked in Oyster Bay, Long Island, or at his home on Jupiter Island, Florida. Fun fact: Woods also owns a $54 million private jet —a Gulfstream G550—that can seat 18, and which he also uses to shuttle himself between tournaments.

Woods and Nordegren quietly snapped up property in a gated community in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for an undisclosed amount (lots there were listed for between $1.2 million and $4.5 million). Details of their vacation home are sparse, though it’s believed that the couple sought out land in the Cowboy State for a few different reasons, including its proximity to excellent golf courses and fly fishing, as well as easily accessible slopes for Nordegren to ski on. It is unclear whether either of them still own this property.

Woods and Nordegren then shelled out a whopping $40 million for a 12-acre property on Jupiter Island, Florida, where neighbors include Bill Gates, Celine Dion, and fellow golfer Greg Norman. At the time, there was an existing 9,000-square-foot mansion on the grounds, but the couple opted to tear down the original mansion in favor of erecting their own —a $54 million mega-mansion measuring 9,700 square feet with four additional structures including a golf studio, a guesthouse, a garage, and a boathouse with two private docks. Other amenities include a diving pool, a lap pool, a tennis court, and an oxygen therapy room. Construction of the impressive home was completed in 2010, and Woods moved into the home in 2011 following his split with Nordegren. (She and their two children moved to a new beachfront home in Palm Beach County.) The athlete still owns this property and considers it his primary residence.

Ever the filial son, Woods also made sure to look out for both his parents. He reportedly bought his mother two adjacent lots in Jupiter, Florida, for around $2.4 million, with plans to spend an additional $2.6 million to build on the land. He also went in on another home in Windermere, Florida, with his father for $1.31 million. Not much else is known about these properties.

Woods next threw his hat in the ring to help fund the construction of an ultra-exclusive resort in the Bahamas, alongside other celebrity investors like Justin Timberlake, Ernie Els, and Joe Lewis. The luxury resort community is known as Albany, and is set on 600 acres on the island New Providence, with nine marina-front condominium buildings, each boasting a different architectural style. (One, for instance, was designed by renowned architect Bjarke Ingels to look like a cube.) Amenities include a golf course, naturally, as well as several swimming pools, an equestrian center, a water sports center, tennis courts, and a 15,000-square-foot fitness center with yoga and Pilates studios.

Norman Reedus Prepares to Part With His Georgia Home, Neutra’s Adler House Is for Sale, and More Real Estate News

By Rachel Davies

Here is Greg Norman's yacht.  Say hello to Aussie Rules as she is called.
Have you ever dreamed of buying your own yacht and putting out to sea to cruise the world?  This story answers the question of what the super-rich do with their money when they decide to have fun.  Most of us have no shot at something this magnificent, but it is pretty wonderful to see what is possible nonetheless.  I suppose some people might criticize Mr. Norman for making his opulent toy so conspicuous, but I don't mind at all.  Indeed, I feel very grateful that I have been permitted to get a peek at this marvelous lifestyle.  I thoroughly enjoy stoking my fantasies!    I am sure that right about now you are wondering to yourself if it is too late to take up golf.  Who would have ever imagined that an odd little Scottish game like GOLF could be parlayed into a yacht as magnificent as this!?!   Wow!
In addition to being opulent, the yacht is also built for Jacques Cousteau - type fun and exploration. There is onboard diving equipment for 30 people including a decompression chamber and two huge compressors. Dives of all types can be accomplished by operating the Nitrox Mixing Panel onboard, enabling each guest's air tank to be customized with a mixture of gases.
Even the Bridge looks comfortable.  That helps make those long nights of cruising the Pacific Islands more enjoyable.
The more we see, the more the yacht resembles a floating mansion!
Very pretty.  As you see, dining can be held outdoors if the weather permits.
The picture above gives us an idea of the breath-taking views that might accompany a simple morning breakfast at this open air table!    Now check out the sunken cocktail area.  Are you envious yet?
When night falls or stormy weather comes calling, we see that the yacht has an exquisite interior dining room as well.  All the comforts of home but no grass to mow and no property taxes to pay!   What a dream. THE FUN SHIP! Mr. Norman wanted his yacht to be practical in addition to comfortable.  When visiting tropical islands and scuba locations, he wanted everyone to have as much mobility as possible.  To get the people out to those choice dive spots or maybe to visit a deserted beach for a splash in the warm water , the following additional "small" boats are kept onboard: A 42-Foot Custom Built "Game Fisher" c an be launched and retrieved from the deck. Perfect for a 4-person overnight fishing expedition. Has a gourmet galley for cooking up the catch while it's still fresh. There is a 2 2-Foot Novurania Equator with a meager 800 horsepower so you can get to the best diving sites ahead of everyone else. It has beach landing capability as well. Two 18-Foot Hewes Bonerfishers for those special occasions when Norman a n d his friend s wish to maneuver over the sand flats in Key West, Florida .
Well, now it's time to wrap it up.  Hope you enjoyed the visit.  If you have enjoyed viewing these pictures, you will definitely enjoy seeing even more pictures at the home page for AUSSIE RULES What you see here is only the tip of the iceberg.   There you will find dozens more pictures plus a great deal of explanation about the yacht. As for me, I'm signing up for golf lessons today.   Maybe I will see you on the golf course!      Rick Archer

Greg Norman’s Yacht

The rotors of a helicopter cut through the Florida heat as Greg Norman delivered a speech. Oceanfast built “Aussie Rules” for the pro golfer. It has a helicopter pad for 12 people and two turboprop engines in the rear to help the yacht reach cruising speed. The rotors are so loud that they interrupt Greg Norman’s speech. Greg Norman’s yacht has been spotted in a number of places, including Cabo and Puerto Vallarta.

Greg Norman’s blond hair and aggressive style have earned him the nickname “Great White Shark”. His mother, a Finnish immigrant from Finland, was a member on the PGA Tour when Norman was just 15 years old. He began to improve her game and act as her caddy shortly after. Norman graduated high school knowing that he had the potential to be an international sports star. In fact, he won the 1981 Masters and later went on to win the U.S. Open.

The OCEAN SPIRIT yacht is a high-quality Australian yacht. It cost its first owner US$70million. Since then, Norman has added four Yamaha Waverunners and a Mini Cooper. It has a capacity of up to 24 guests and is capable of sleeping 14 people. Kutayba alghanim, a Kuwaiti billionaire, currently owns the yacht. Norman’s wife Kristen Kutner lives on board.

Greg Norman has spent a lot of money on luxury yachts. The Oceanfast “Aussie Rules”, which cost $70 million, was purchased by Greg Norman. She is 285 feet long and is an expedition-style yacht. A twelve-seat helicopter is also available. Greg Norman’s net worth was estimated at $340 million in April 2022. So, just how much does a golf pro spend on a yacht?

As a golfer, Greg Norman has received numerous endorsements and is an extremely successful businessman. His yacht, Aussie Rules, is named after the Australian game of golf. It is the largest private yacht in the World and has been seen in many locations including Hawaii, Monaco, and Monaco. Despite its high price tag, Greg Norman’s yacht has a huge following.

The golfer has spent a large portion of his wealth on luxury yachts. From 1986 to 1995, he was the top earner on the professional golf circuit, with earnings of more than $10 million. The prize money is not a fixed salary for golfers, but they do get a prize money if they are among the winners. The golfer has a net value of $300 million and has also invested in a company that designs golf courses. Other golfers who have built their own yachts include Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele.

While the residences are set for completion in 2025, the golf club will open in 2023.

Auberge Resorts Collection will also manage a new boutique resort on the grounds. Residents get access to resort-managed in-residence housekeeping and dining, as well. There will be a dedicated Director of Residences to ensure every need is taken care of, just as if you’re staying in a hotel. Auberge manages dozens of other luxury properties around the world, including Hotel Jerome in Aspen, Colorado; Blue Sky in Park City, Utah; Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley, California; and many more. Auberge also manages hotels with residential components in Telluride, Napa Valley and Los Cabos, to name a few.

“Shell Bay fills a void in the market for the most discerning lifestyle enthusiast seeking a strong investment opportunity while being able to indulge in the highest quality private members’ club amenities and world-class resort living,” says Ari Pearl, founder and CEO of PPG Development. “Shell Bay residents are individuals who seek the best of the best in leisure destinations and want to enjoy a lifestyle on par with the finest resort communities around the world.”

Moscow Buildings :15 Places Architects Must Visit in Moscow

15 Places Architects must visit in Moscow

Moscow is a powerful mix of history and edginess, full of world-famous sites and attractions. Russia ’s capital has been in existence for more than 800 years, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that this city is filled with some of the oldest fortresses, grandiose cathedrals to well sought out public transportation and futuristic skyscrapers .  Here is a list of a few Moscow buildings an architect must tick off his travel list, when in Moscow.

1. Red Square | Moscow Buildings

Centrally located in Moscow, the Red Square has inextricable links to Russian history since the 13th century.  Initially, a marketplace , the square became famous as the site of large-scale military parades and other demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Presently it is occasionally used for official ceremonies by all Russian governments. The ‘red’ in Red square is unrelated to the crimson brick buildings that surround the square. The Russian name of Red Square- “Krasnaya Ploschad” derived from the word “Krasnyi” meant beautiful in Old Russian and only later became associated with the colour red. The prominent buildings that surround the Square are Lenin’s Mausoleum, Kremlin, Saint Basil’s Cathedral to name a few.

2. The Grand Kremlin Palace

Built-in 1849, was formerly the tsar’s Moscow residence. Intended to emphasise the greatness of Russian autocracy it towers over the Borovitsky hill looming over the Moscow River. Since it is currently the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation, parts of it are restricted for the general audience. The façade has three levels of windows, however, the palace consists of only 2 floors. The opulent interiors of the palace that it was once stripped off of during the Soviet times, were refurbished in the 1990s.

The palace complex also houses the Terem Palace, which is currently the residence of the Russian President, which is not accessible to the public. The exterior of this is exuberantly decorated with brick tracery and coloured tiles is brilliantly painted in red, yellow, and orange.

3. Kuskovo Museum

The former summer country house & estate of the Russian nobility, the Sheremetev family is now home to the Russian museum of Ceramics , the world’s largest collections of ceramics & glass from various countries.

Built in the 18th century, this neoclassical Palace exudes Wes Anderson aesthetic with soft pastel colours on the exterior. The entire Estate was designed for entertainment, festivities & state occasions. The ostentatious interiors accommodate around 26 rooms of which 12 are large staterooms that completely mesmerise you, right from the marble columns of the vestibule, Flemish tapestries, carved motifs in the state bedroom and mirror covered walls in white and gold in the Dancing Hall.

The estate sprawled over 720 acres holds over 20 architectural monuments, including Italian & Dutch houses, an old church, grotto, a Petrine baroque style wooden church and numerous other buildings. It also boasts of an extensive French park, the only kind in Moscow.

4. St. Basil’s Cathedral

At the southern end of the Red Square, stands the whimsical masterpiece of Russia, the St. Basil Cathedral . Unlike any other cathedral, the columnar church is each decorated with onion domes, where none of the designs repeats onto the other. 8 column chapels cluster around the ninth& the tallest one, which houses the main nave of the church. The cathedral’s original colour was said to be white, to complement the white stone of Kremlin, while the domes were gold. However, in the 17th century, the domes began to be painted the remarkable colours that are seen today. Inside this composite church are a labyrinth of narrow vaulted corridors and vertical cylinders of the churches.

5. State historical museum | Moscow Buildings

The red brick building which echoes the St. Basil’s Cathedral resonates well into the architectural narrative of the Red Square. Its exterior is an excellent example of the Russian revival style while incorporating motifs from Muscovite architecture with its tall spires. The museum exhibits a range of relics of prehistoric tribes that lived on the territory of present-day Russia. It boasts 39 halls with unique interiors with different exhibits. The interiors are reminiscent of Russian churches and princely courts. One of the halls is built like a Byzantine cathedral and resembles a miniature Hagia Sophia from the inside.

6. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is the highest orthodox temple in the world and the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow and all Russians. Located between the Kremlin and Moskva River, it is a magnificent white structure that dominates in a Neo-Russian and Byzantine architectural style. It was built over a period of 40 years from 1839 to 1883, only to be demolished in 1931 by Stalin’s command. It was to be replaced by an authoritarian 415m high structure, from which the concept of Seven Sisters, or Moscow’s 7 large skyscrapers, in Stalinist architecture, was developed. The stone façade with white marble, four columns and 5 gold-gilded domes was beautifully rebuilt, back to its former glory in the early ’90s as a place of pilgrimage.

The GUM, also known as the State department store, is an opulent shopping mall facing Red Square. The trapezoidal building features a combination of elements of Russian medieval architecture and a steel framework and glass roof, a similar style to the great 19th-century railway stations of London . After the 1812 fire, the moat near the Kremlin wall was replaced with sand and the ramparts were eliminated, along with rows of numerous shops were replaced to pave way for a large Classicist building. The building has three levels and is covered with a glass roof resting on a curved steel framework that allows the sun to stream into the space that paves way for customers, a stark contrast from a typical departmental store anywhere.

8. Izmailovo Kremlin

Apart from the main Kremlin in Moscow’s famous Red Square, there is a second, lesser-known Kremlin in the northeastern part of the city, Izmailovo Kremlin.

An unexpected wonderland, the Izmailovo Kremlin is a kaleidoscope of colourful towers. The wooden complex was built in the early 2000s as a cultural centre and marketplace, modelled after traditional Russian architectural and fairy-tale depictions of Old Russia. Set like a small village, it holds a lot of museums, antiques and handicrafts . The variety of built styles is something that keeps you captivated through and through.

9. Tsaritsyno Palace

The palace is part of a magnanimous Palace museum and park reserve in the south of Moscow. The estate was founded in 1776 and renovated extensively in 2007. The Tsaritsyno architectural monument is a major attraction with its large scale expositions in the museum that immerses you in the spirit of the 18 th century.  Built-in Neo-gothic style , the Grand Palace is a three-storey building, flanked by green-roofed towers. Just as almost any other Tsaritsyno building, this one too combines red brick with white stone. The steeples on the towers, lancet windows and arches mesmerise you even from afar.  The estate is also home to a number of pavilions, pergolas, artificial grottos, decorative bridges, Russian orthodox and a naturally inundating but maintained landscape.

10. Sandunovsky Bath House | Moscow Buildings

Immerse yourself in history by visiting the unique and opulent Russian Bathhouse. A national heritage, the Sanduny Bath House is the oldest public bathhouse in Russia. This building holds bath departments, spacious lounge zones, swimming pools and Classical Russian steam rooms, private rooms and 8 separate bathhouse areas with Jacuzzis. Built in the 1800’s, the baths received water via a specially built aqueduct from the Babyegorodskaya Dam on the Moscow River and from 700 feet of an artesian well. The electrical illumination was provided by a private electric power station. The exteriors and interiors are a mix of Baroque, Classical, Renaissance, Gothic and Rococo styles. The hallway leading up to the changing rooms are decorated in elaborate mosaics and frescos.

11. Bolshoi Theatre | Moscow Buildings

The historic 19th-century theatre originally designed by Architect Joseph Bové continues to be a major contributor to the Russian performing arts. It is also home to one of the oldest ballet and opera companies. A mighty Palladian façade with neoclassical columns and horses galloping across the intricately carved pediment enrich the exterior. Restored multiple times through the course of its existence due to fires, its imperial décor and acoustics were finally restored to their former glory in 2011. The interiors are a mix of Renaissance with Byzantine style, a cue from the alluring theatres across Europe such as Palais Garnier in Paris.

The white balconies interspersed with gold, the bright crimson draping of the interiors and a magnificent chandelier are a sight to behold.

12. Ostankino Tower

The TV tower, built-in 1967 by Nikolai Nikitin, has been the tallest freestanding structure in Europe for over 50 years. On contrary to a tall structure relying on a deep foundation, the foundation of Ostankino’s tower was made resilient by making its foundation far heavier than the structure itself.

The concept of the silhouette of the building was an upside-down lily, with a firm stem and solid petals as supports. With 2 observation decks at 337m and 340ms, the glass and open observation decks provide breath-taking views of the entire city.

One can only begin to fathom the sheer expanse and planning of the city is mesmerizing from that height.

13. Arbat Street

An all pedestrian street where you can roam about and take in all the architecture at your own leisurely pace, Arbat is a dream come true. One of the most famous streets in Moscow, the Arbat was once a bohemian place that transitioned over the ages into being home to a lot of prominent Russian writers and poets. The huts paved the way to one – two-storey mansions with tower rooms and gardens that further developed into multi-storey tenement houses in various architectural styles. The few prominent styles were Art Nouveau, eclecticism and Avant-Garde, which are still of great interest for architectural connoisseurs.

14. Melnikov House

The eccentric house that Konstantin Melnikov built for him and his family was surrounded by a whirlwind of controversy and un-acceptance, but over the years turned into a 20th-century icon for Russian architecture. With an aesthetic different from traditional Soviet residential architecture, it was an essence of the later Russian Avant-garde. It features 2 interlocking cylindrical volumes standing 3 stories high with enough space for the family, and studio space. The windows are a series of shapes resulting in a honeycomb structure with angles that were determined by the quarter lengths of the standard local bricks. These windows provided an even dispersion of light, air and heat that beautifully lit up the interior space.

15 PLACES IN MOSCOW- MELNIKOV HOUSE - sheet1

15. The Moscow Metros | Moscow Buildings

The underground world of Moscow reads of a whole other world of amazing architecture for a daily commuter. The Metro was one of the major propaganda of the Soviet-era right from 1938, with a desire of the Soviet leaders to communicate the power of the union to citizens and visitors.

The underground palaces for the people were initially a Russian version of art Deco with some avant-garde forms that slowly transitioned to Neo-Classical with Imperial motifs. These stations are an embodiment of brilliance and a radiant past. All the stations differ from one another some are richly decorated with ornaments and bas reliefs; some are vaulted with large mosaics depicting historic events in history with gilded arches. The cost to experience them is only that of a metro ticket.

Federation Tower / Tchoban Voss Architekten + SPEECH + SCHWEGER ARCHITEKTEN - Cityscape

Text description provided by the architects. Federation Tower is a complex consisting of two skyscrapers – the 63-storey Tower West and the 97-storey Tower East – on lot 13 of the Moscow International Business Centre in Moscow. The two towers stand on the same mixed-use plinth. The most recognizable high-rise landmark in Moscow, Federation Tower has a memorable silhouette in the form of two glass sails which face one another.

The Federation Tower complex ascends to 374 meters (in 2017 the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat – CTBUH – recognized it as the tallest skyscraper in Europe). The design is based on the concept of the vertical city, which was realized here for the first time in the history of modern Russia. Each of the towers has a combination of office and residential floors, interspersed with sports and entertainment functions. The six-storey plinth likewise has offices and a shopping gallery. There are more public facilities on the upper floors of the both towers: a restaurant, an observation deck and a multifunctional public space for events.

The basis of the foundations of the Federation Tower complex is a massive concrete slab. Both buildings rely for their stability on a mighty concrete core whose walls are 1.4 meters thick at its base, as well as on 25 perimeter columns extending all the way through the towers from the foundations to the top storeys. Each column has a base measuring 2 x 1.4 meters. Every 25-30 storeys there are outrigger storeys made from high-strength steel structures. The façades have been glazed using the very latest glazing systems: the surface of the glass reflects the sun’s rays while preserving the optimum temperature in the building. In terms of density, the glass comes close to the thermal performance of a brick wall. At the time when use of the latter technology began at Federation Tower, it was being used in no other skyscraper in the world.
