First Time MSC Cruisers- Royal Suite Worth the Price?

Cool Cruiser

Hello! My husband and I are in our early 30s and looking to cruise the Virtuosa next fall to the Med. We have exclusively cruised RCCL and generally stay in the Grand Suites. I have recently started researching the perks of MSC and it seems like the yacht club would be a nice upgrade for us. We are debating between the Duplex Suite and the Royal Suite- has anyone stayed in either room type and can comment? We stayed in a Crown Loft Suite for our Honeymoon on RCCL and loved it, but are thinking the Royal Suite would be an even nicer treat...just wondering if it is worth the price hike? I am also interested in any input on the demographics of other cruisers on this line. Royal has a lot of young couples and families- but I think MSC attracts an older audience. Will we be able to find other suite guests our age in the lounge and pool areas? Thanks for the help!

OK there have been 31 views to your question but no answer so here goes

We have cruised on a few cruise lines done Royal Suites on Celebrity but at the moment like MSC YC , we stay in the balcony rooms not Duplex or Royal suites. The Duplex are not in the YC enclave but at the very front of the ship on lower decks, so I would prefer a room within YC. That said our friends had a duplex on Bellissima in February and it was very nice. As YC bookings include drinks grats etc a quick look at pricing tells me I could do 2 cruises in a YC Deluxe Balcony for a little more than a Royal suite so I think I would try a normal Deluxe YC balcony

Age demographic its the Med so lots of ages and countries mixed,

Others may have different opinions but hope this helps, I will say that we haven't done anything on RCCL since a transatlatic in 2012 so can't compare.

If you are going to do MSC they will status match your loyalty which will give you a discount on bookings, check out Voyagers Club under Manage a booking on their website

Is it just two of you? We've done two of three in RS and really nothing more than room space other than on Seaside where we got cabana.  A couple others here seem to get royal treatment though.

Two thoughts

1.  Given that next summer we will still be social distancing, will YC status make the experience better?

2.  Med Cruises tend to be quite port intensive.  You will be off the ship for long days (hoepfully) so would you be better off spending money on tours?

Like

the gratuities are not included in your fare..MSC does not include the grats in any fare... so thats an additional charge. Its put on the bill while one the ship.

Also MSC requires you to put down cash or a credit card the first day of sailing to handle incidentals and grats. In YC- the concierge will get your credit card number. On the ship there are machines to link your card to your sailing.  you cannot disembark without paying your bill... heard a story about an ugly situation on the sailing before our first leg and a couple that had a falling out... on whose card would be charged what. sheesh

AND many (including us) tip cash the last night/departure morning to our butler, asst butler, Maitre D, Waiter, asst waiter, Bar staff etc.  YC service is great and if you are used to suite sailing you understand they earn it

YC -- as far as clientel..

MSC attracts more europeans and is a european in style cruise line.

So everything from food/bev to entertainment has that flair.

Also every announcement is in multiple languages

Age-- when we sailed B2B in Feb 2020 for example-- I'd say the age range in YC was 35-75.

There was a newlywed couple who spent most of their time in the clubs etc in other parts of the ship... not in the YC lounges. If you are looking for club/dance music--its on the ship, not in YC.

If you are looking for lively bar scene--its on the ship, not in YC

I'd say the avg of the week age-wise skewed 50s those two weeks. A few in 40s, many in 60-70s range.

YC folks- while cordial - because many are from the EU - speak another language first and may or may not speak english second. And YC was not a lively clubby scene.

We met a lovely couple from France--and my hs French did no suffice. We met another lovely couple from Switzerland and he spoke passable beginnners english. With that and my Italian--we two couples got by.

A couple of German couples had some english--we don't speak German so the Swiss couple ironically was the bridge via our Italian.

Other Italian couples may have understood some english but chose to not speak it--so again, our Italian filled the gap--and they were gracious with our grammatical errors/pronunciation.

There were two families with toddlers that did not eat in the YC dining room...dining is a slower relaxed affair

Children in diapers are not allowed in any pool on the ship-and at one point they had their toddler in a swim diaper in the YC pool. They were admonished--and it never happened again.

A couple of couples one week were there on a casino discount. They spent all of their time in the casino and it sounded like if they hadn't gotten the perk through a land based casino--they would not have chosen YC

YC is lovely. The crowd is older and international. If you have other languages under your belt, so much the better for conversation. Yet, certainly not necessary.

The crew all speak english- some better than others. They each likely speak 3-5 languages.

YC crew are incredible. They are there to serve you and are not your servants.

We have a B2B booked and can't wait to be back. We are more than 20 yrs older than you....

Hope this helps.

Two Wheels Only

Two Wheels Only

I've done one RS and have 2 others booked. I'd only book the RS if the asking price is realistic. If it is 30%-45% higher than the Deluxe Suite, I'll take the RS. When MSC wants double (or more) than the Deluxe, the RS isn't worth it. We're a family of 4 so the extra space is worth it (only 1 bathroom, though) and so far we've been lucky to catch prices before they climb.

We considered the Duplex for the extra bathroom but the balcony, even with the hot tub, isn't great.

Totally agree.  Unfortunately MSC now seems to be able to get that 100%+ more for the Royal than a YC Deluxe.  Or maybe they're just holding the price and rely on it driving bidding later.  I haven't seen the RS offered at a 40% premium for a while, the only exception being on the Seaside this Spring from Port Canaveral where they are trying to re-fill the ship.  Seashore RS is often running 125% more.

We've toured the RS and the Duplex but haven't felt any urge to book one.  We did try one of the larger Aurea Suites with large balcony (now called Grand suite with private whirlpool) on Meraviglia, which has a similar layout, but smaller, to a Royal Suite.  Having the private hot tub was the best part, the extra cabin space really wasn't needed as there were only two of us.  The size of the RS would have been wasted to us.  YC Deluxe suites offer plenty of room for two if you can live without the hot tub.  Actually I've found the need for private cabin space is minimal if you're in the YC so have no problem booking a YC interior - depending on itinerary.

40,000+ Club

When it comes to large suites I do not think there is a one answer fits all response.   DW and I have spent a lot of time (more then 3 years) on cruise ships and have little desire to pay for a large suite (such as a Royal Suite).  Why?  Because we once calculated that we spend no more then 3 waking hours per day in our cabin.  The one time we did have a really large suite (on HAL) we found that we never utilized most of the space (or furniture) in the cabin.  On MSC we only cruise in the Yacht Club but are very satisfied with the regular YC Suites (which are really slightly larger regular balcony cabins).  Once awake we find ourselves taking advantage of the expansive lounge in the YC or heading up to the pool deck.  It is rare that we would ever want to sit in our cabin or even on the small balcony.  On MSC we Royal Suite gets the same food, entertainment, and service that we get in a regular YC Suite..   On the other hand, if folks enjoy spending lots of time in their cabin then perhaps the space is worth the money.   I also think that if we were traveling with kids we might prefer the larger suites.

In response to post by Fogfog the gratuities ARE included in all MSC booking in UK and have been for a while

the by far most important feature of YC is: less crowd, quite, room.....

it's a different world, you realize immidiately by walking through the glass door into YC area....

That's exactly how we feel, no fighting for space or beds on deck

Us too, an amazing experience in Deluxe Suite or Inside YC cabins. Within the YC areas, all of it is available to everyone, no matter the cabin type....maybe with the exception of a pool deck cabana, which is reserved for those with a Royal Suite. Other YC passengers can pay for cabana use, although on our 3 YC cruises we rarely saw anyone use such!

I hope the OP comes back and comment with their thoughts on posts or further questions

Is it the same for booked in Italy? and other parts of the Med?.

Re tax-- does anyone know how MSC handles tax for EU vs non EU ports for things bought ON the ship while in port? TYIA

The way MSC adds gratuities varies by region.  In some areas it is optional and can be removed once on the ship.  Other areas have it included in the cruise price and cannot be removed.  Some areas keep it separate but mandatory, you can pay at the time of booking or delay payment until on board.

Are you asking about buying items from the ship's stores like jewelry, bottles of liquor and cigarettes or items like drink purchases from a bar while in port?

Tapi

We did a Duplex Suite on the Meraviglia when it was classified as an Aurea suite so we didn’t have access to the YC. Still, it was the best stateroom we’ve ever had on any cruise we’ve taken. Spacious, airy,  well appointed, and having our own forward facing jacuzzi was a perk that we enjoyed immensely. The forward location at the end of the hallway was nice and secluded since there was no passenger traffic ever. We could’ve had a smaller suite in the Yacht Club for a similar price, yet we felt that going with the larger Duplex suite was the right decision for us.

We were in a port intensive Western Mediterranean cruise but we still spent a lot of time in our stateroom (Considerably more than usual). It was always so nice to come back to our suite.

As far as demographics go, I think it’s very similar to RC. Passengers of all ages, many families, and an energy similar to RC.

That is a really good point.  A good counter argument to my point.  I will bear it in mind when we eventually start cruising again.

We love having extra space when we cruise.  Is the Royal Suite worth it??  It depends on how much you are comfortable spending.  I have looked at the deck plans and I would, MPO,  choose the duplex.  You will hear the average YC cruiser say that they prefer to be in the YC proper.  That’s because they have never tried the lower decks.  We have done a forward suite on the lower deck but still with all the YC benefits.  I can honestly say...we loved it!  We loved having easy access to the rest of the ship and we really loved all the extra space.  Your duplex on Virtuoso would be a real fab suite...definitely a step up from your RCI Grand Suite...which we also love.  We loved the forward view...you won’t be spending much time on the balcony...but you will love the hot tub!  Sitting in a balcony hot tub with a cool drink...nothing better!

We had no problems accessing our butler or getting any service we wanted.  We would simply call the concierge and request whatever we wanted.  You will receive every benefit the other YC cabins receive.  We were on Divina with a forward view two room suite on deck 12 and we would choose that suite over the regular YC balcony every time.  We would even choose that suite over the Royal Suite.

Perhaps the poster was asking about the extra VAT added in some sailings. Basically, if your sailing is a domestic European Union sailing with no ports of call outside it, and you depart from Spain, Italy or a few other countries, you'll be subject to a state tax named Value Added Tax (VAT) of 10% the value of any purchase you'll do inside the ship during all the sailing payed to your departing port state.

As far as I can know there are not extra taxes for purchases when a ship is in port, but usually both the shops and the casinos are closed for business at that time.

Back in the day, the MSC's casino bar used to add an extra tax supposedly to support the pension schemes for the casino employees. But that was revoked several years ago.

The OP hasn’t returned, to the thread in 2 weeks

  • 2 weeks later...

  Depends on the ship !

Best to youtube.com for each one.

We LOVE the RS. 2 totally separate rooms with a solid door closure so one person can watch TV in the living room & you could comfortably nap in the bedroom.

On the Davina, The balcony is really not usable.  On the Seaside, the balcony is gigantic with full dining table, lounge chairs & hot tub & you still have extra room !

I love the private pool area with buffet. You can always get a lounge chair & they are not squished together like on other areas of the ship.

Not about price.   Remember, all alcohol is included    :O)    You get a complementary cabana on the pool deck where it is always stocked with a bottle of  Champagne & they not only bring you anything you ask for...even when you do not ask, they were bringing us chocolate strawberries & ice cream

On the Seaside, we were also given unlimited free laundry service. Gelato & crepes in the specality areas were free.

Now about the casino....you do not have to play in there very long before you are given a coupon for 30% off your next cruise. This must be used within 1 year. Theirs is the most generous casino club at sea. that is how we were able to do our first YC3 cruise.

The first cruise I could find with a YC3 available we could book was 1 month past the year. The said it was OK.

NOW FOR THE MOST GENEROUS PART...  They then told us that we did not have to book through them. We could book through any agent & just give them the confirmation number & they would adjust everything. So, I got in touch with the internet agency we always use.

They threw in free gratuities & $500. OBC. We then got back to MSC & they took the 30 % off the price.

We have done this ever since. I was worried when this years cruise was cancelled that we would no longer be able to afford the YC3 but MSC just pushed the date out 1 year & kept the discounts.

BoundForSea

So here’s my $0.02 for what its worth.

If you can afford the RS quite easily with zero impact then do it, because you can.

If that’s not the case, then here’s our new approach, having sailed YC Deluxe on SS and Mera a few times.... We now book Interior, prior to Covid I could usually book ALMOST two 7ni sailings for the cost of one 7ni sailing.  The experience is so great and the value so great, having the ability to have two glorious embarkation days i stead of one at the cost of a balcony is priceless. I have 5 sailings booked from Dec 2020 to Dec 2021 for this reason.

If it were me, I’d book 4 7ni Interior sailings before I booked a RS. Now with Covid world pricing the spreads arent the same and overall YC pricing is up. Seashore Nov/Dec is up for sure. Typically early December pricing is great, not so much right now for SeaShore 2021.

Anyway thats a didferent perspective. If you can easily afford to charter a Gulfstream Private Jet at 5000$/ flight hr and up, why not rather than First Class on an airline? Same with RS. If you can, do it because you can!

7 hours ago, BoundForSea said: So here’s my $0.02 for what its worth.    If you can afford the RS quite easily with zero impact then do it, because you can.

I would say that's a fair comment!

All alcohol is included with any YC cabin, including insides. Champagne, and anything else you may want including strawberries & ice cream, is freely available to all in the YC. In our experience, after the first few requests, the assistant butlers will know what you like and deliver as often as desired. The only thing mentioned above which is 'free' solely to RS is a cabana, way over-rated IMHO but available to anyone outwith RS at a minimal daily charge.....and according to someone on our Meraviglia cruise, the full week rate was negotiable with the YC Director.

This post is not intended to burst anyones' RS bubble....we get it that some may go for them....simply to reiterate facts as to what all YC 'residents' are entitled to.

Totally agree with Hamrag...RS is nice if you don’t mind paying the price.

One of our RS was on Seaside.  We did not get free laundry.  We did not get champagne in cabana.  We got one small cooler filled with beers, water, and sodas each day, that was it.  Nobody ever came by asking about anything.  We got treats in room late in trip one day meant for cabana.

And OP was asking about Virtuosa, so if referring to videos, similar would be Meraviglia.

MSC Bellissima's "Crystal Cabin"

The MSC ship Bellissima has fleet's (and world's) first-ever "Crystal Cabin" - a balcony stateroom adorned with around 0,7 million Swarovski crystals. The YC-Deluxe Suite (room number 16018, located on Deck 16 forward-starboard) is in the MSC Yacht Club and recognizable by the crystallized number on the entry door. In-cabin Swarovski crystal decorations include furniture (both bedside tables / 2-door nightstands, coffee table's top, sideboard), the wall-mounted bedside lamps (sconces specially designed to provide lighting throughout), walls (with coral-themed artworks adorned with the luxury crystals).

MSC Cruises' "Crystal Cabin" was developed in partnership with Swarovski Group and De Jorio Design International. The stateroom is available at no extra cost (same-priced as other "Yacht Club Deluxe" category balcony suites).

In addition to the new crystal cabin and the 96 steps with 61,000+ Swarovski crystals on MSC Bellissima, other details consist of crystal detailed wallpaper in the MSC Yacht Club and a crystallized Active Panel illuminated by custom-made LED lighting with ~0,5 million crystals per m2 built into the design of the Champagne Bar.

ZOE is MSC's (and cruise industry's first) new in-cabin digital assistant. The technology was developed by Harman International (US-based company, a fully-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics).

  • ZOE is an artificial intelligence device (voice-enabled, with advanced voice recognition software) available in all passenger staterooms.
  • ZOE speaks 7 languages, answer cruise-related questions, provides info on shipboard services-activities-facilities, makes reservations and bookings.
  • The digital device features far-field microphones, top-quality speaker, quad-core processor (for fast response times), direct phone connection (through Bluetooth). The system can also upgrade its own database to answer previously unanswerable questions.
  • Passenger data (including itinerary/tour and shipboard preferences) is stored in the Cloud Storage system and used on the next scheduled voyage.
  • The device (sized ~15 cm) can be activated whenever passengers choose. A waiver must be signed to agree for their personal data to be stored.

Starting with Bellissima (2019), ZOE will be available on all newbuild MSC liners - including Grandiosa (2019) and Virtuosa (2020) - and introduced fleetwide over 2019-2024.

  1. First Time MSC Cruisers- Royal Suite Worth the Price?

10.1k. March 26, 2015. Central FL. #6. Posted August 25, 2020 (edited) I've done one RS and have 2 others booked. I'd only book the RS if the asking price is realistic. If it is 30%-45% higher than the Deluxe Suite, I'll take the RS. When MSC wants double (or more) than the Deluxe, the RS isn't worth it.

  2. MSC Bellissima cabins and suites

Duplex Suites feature 2 walk-in closets, 2 bathrooms (1 with bathtub, 1 with shower), veranda with a whirlpool bath. YACHT CLUB Royal Suites feature a spacious veranda (40 m2) with a 6-seat dining table and a whirlpool bath. MSC Cruises "BELLA cabins" are in categories I1-Inside, O1-Oceanview, and B1-Balcony.
