Humpback whales

The humpback’s name comes from the way its back arches out of the water when preparing for a deep dive. “Megaptera” is its true scientific name, which means “large-winged,” in reference to its long flippers.

Finback whales

Finbacks are second only to Blue Whales in overall size, measuring in at 45-70 feet in length and weighing approximately 40 tons as full-grown adults.

Minke whales

A sleek, small dolphin-like baleen whale, Minkes are the most abundant whale in the world today with a population numbering well over 1 million worldwide.

White-sided dolphins

Found only in the North Atlantic, in waters just south of New England and north to Norway, these playful mammals feed on single prey such as squid, unlike whales, who feast on large numbers of small fish.

Saw lots of whales. He turned the boat so you could see from each side. Also got to see dolphins!!!!

Lovely 3 hours (about 3 hours 20 minutes) late August. Managed to see several humpback whales at fairly close proximity. The guide was informative and the conditions were perfect.

We enjoyed the Boston whale watching cruise. It took an hour to get out to the whale watching spot and an hour back. So be prepared to ride a while. Many people got sick and the water was not choppy at all, Plenty of drinks and snacks on board. The narrator was quite informative and quite educated on whales.

I and my wife took the cruise on the speed catamaran that happened to be a memorable one. There were 3 whales circulating in the visited area. We saw two huge breaches like on the commercial poster and recommend the tour highly to nature lovers. The catamaran is pretty fast, so bring some shell jackets for wind protection on the dock while the boat is moving at speed and sun protection when the boat is at still. Staff is very knowledgeable and you may ask and get answers to any whales related questions. The tour takes just short of four hours and there are sandwiches and snacks available for purchase to keep you running while you are on the boat. Highly recommended!

I was very surprised at how many whales we saw, and how close they were to our catamaran. My family was on a long cruise with 5 city stops, and this whale watching excursion was by far the best experience of the total cruise for several in my family.

We had a great time viewing the whales. The crew was friendly and helpful. Just keep in mind that this is more of a 4 hour cruise, rather than 3 hours as advertised.

This was so much fun. I love to ride boats so I went really for the boat ride. But,,,, there were 4 whales in the water around our boat. According to the host, it is very unusual to see so much action all at one time but we got to see it..... loved it.

Must do activity in Boston , try to make your reservation early in your trip or stay in Boston, so if canceled for any reason ( weather for example) , still you can do it next day . Actually this happened to me and I was fortunate enough that I was staying one more night in Boston , they automatically switched my reservation to next day and I was able to do it.. Too cold weather so you have to be ready for this. Nice to watch whales and dolphins in the ocean.

top draw tour ,excellent staff and very knowledgeable we got to see the wildlife wed hoped for [but off coarse that cant be said for every trip]but a free return tour is offered that doesn't expire

This was truly the highlight of our trip. To see God's nature right in front of you .... how amazing. I would definitely encourage anyone to do this.

Have tried to see a whale for 30 years and finally saw some, not very much of them but I guess we did it!

Self, wife and daughter had taken the afternoon tour. A highspeed catamaran took us around 70 km inside the ocean to Whale Sanctuary and stayed there for about 45 minutes. We viewed score of whales up close, four whales just floated around the boatcatamaran, one of them dived just below the railings we were standing. Experience of a lifetime! Highhly recommended.

The boat operators were great and we saw lots of whales. There is a good café on board and the commentary was helpful. HOWEVER, when we arrived 45 mins early the operator had no space on the 10am trip and blamed Viator for not registering us on that trip, though did have a record that we'd paid. I don't know if it was the operator or Viator to blame, but I suggest not using Viator to book this tour.

We got to see and circle 3 whales (or be circled by??) and ended up back in Boston about 45 min later than our tour was supposed to end. It was a wonderful trip.

Traveler Reviews

Got to see 6 different whales and watch them for a while. I think though the boat was too packed. Couldn't really get outside to see them from outside too many people out there.

It was breathtaking to see the whales up close and personal. Only wish we could have hung out longer. But that is no fault anyone

Excited to see humpback whales for the first time in my life with my family. A great experience except that my family got severe ship sick due to the sea wave, so be prepared for that!

Great all around trip the person speaking & pointing out where the whales were was very knowledgeable & was able to answer questions

The experience was great, staff interactive and we saw over 20 whales some were babies. Would recommend this trip.

We got lucky! Weather was great! Whales were there. Beautiful Mother Nature! It was great! Bring a jacket, the boat is fast! Also sunscreen!

All crew were great and fun to see all the Whales. The naturalist was friendly and smart! I would recommend!!

Outstanding! Crew was courteous, knowledgable, and professional. The whale sightings were awesome. We saw 3 humpback whales several times.

The whale watching was phenomenal however we had to wait in line as groups were made to wait in the hot August sun for “photographs”. Even if you did not want a photograph, you could not board the ship until the photographs ahead of your group were done.. the line was down the street and around the corner due to the slow progress of boarding and taking photographs at the same time. We wait 40 minutes and would not go in August again as the heat was intolerable in line.

Highlight of the Boston Trip. A must do experience. Whales were literally playing around the cruise. Such a surreal experience.

What To Bring On Your Whale Watching Cruise

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat – The sun reflects on the water, and may feel much stronger than on land. There will usually be a breeze, so make sure your hat fits snugly on your head.
  • Camera and/or binoculars – You’ll find lots to photograph and watch! Make sure your camera is waterproof, as you may get splashed while photographing.
  • Sweater or jacket – light to medium-weight, depending on the season – You may feel MUCH cooler on water than on land, and there may be a breeze. A windproof jacket is best.
  • Motion-sickness medication? No – because motion-sickness remedies such as Dramamine need to be taken at least an hour before boarding. The catamarans used for Boston whale watching cruises are designed to be highly stable, but if you think you might experience motion sickness, take Dramamine before you board.
  • Comfortable rubber-soled sneakers or shoes – Far better and more stable than sandals or flip-flops for moving around on the decks.
  • Food? No need to – you can buy sandwiches, fruit, and snacks in the ship’s galley, along with non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. Bring cash. Being out at sea sometimes means credit/debit card transactions are not possible due to connectivity glitches.

Ownership Costs Of Sailboats

Boston Whale Watching Cruise by High

The purchase price of a sailboat can vary wildly with size, age, brand and offshore capabilities. For example, a 40-foot sailboat that is designed and built for coastal cruising may cost less than half the cost of a bluewater model, all other aspects being equal.

The initial price is just the beginning of the investment, however. Plan to add the cost of sails electronics, and of course dockage, which can be expensive. Then add in insurance and state registration or U.S. Coast Guard documentation. Our Boat Loan Calculator can help you determine if a sailboat will fit within your budget.

Sailboats tend to have a longer life than motorboats and its not unusual to find people cruising on models that are 30 years old or more. However, maintenance costs rise with age as equipment wears out or repairs are needed to the hull, deck, engine, spars or sails. Additionally, sailboats need regular maintenance including interior and exterior cleaning, hull waxing, woodwork varnishing, sail repair and so forth. Boats that are kept at a dock, and therefore in the water for the season or year-round, may need to have monthly bottom cleaning to scrape off barnacles and new bottom paint applied on a bi-annual basis.

The whale-watching tour in Boston can last between 3.5 to 4 hours.

The duration of a cruise on a particular day varies depending on the activities of whales, weather, and other wildlife sightings.

There are days when you can easily spot a whale just at the start of your cruise, while others require far more searching and traveling offshore.

The migratory and feeding habits are two major determinants of the duration of the Whale Watching Boston tour.

The best time to go whale watching in Boston is from May to October.

During this time, the weather is warm, so the whales migrate to Massachusetts water.

The pleasant weather attracts tourists from all around the world.

Several docks support whale watching near Boston. You can board your catamaran from any of them.

We recommend dressing up for the whale-watching tour, depending on the season.

  • Bring a jacket, sweater, or hoodie for a hot summer day. It can be a little cool and windy offshore.
  • Bring extra layers with a scarf, cap, and gloves for a cold winter day.

Regardless of the season, you must bring the following items along –

  • A sunscreen to prevent tanning
  • Sunglasses to protect eyes from UV rays
  • Rubber shoes or sneakers for traction on a moving boat
  • Binoculars to spot even the farthest whale
  • Camera to store memories
  • Seasickness medication

The catamarans are boats or ships that take tourists on whale-watching tours.

These high-speed and high-powered water vehicles are suited for long voyages on the ocean, including whale watching.

They can carry nearly 400 passengers and are stable.

Almost all catamarans these days come with a climate-controlled interior cabin, cushy suits, and a snack counter.

A catamaran promises fun, entertainment, adventure, and comfort all at the same time.
