Exceptional Sailing Vacations in Belize

Unspoiled and less crowded than other parts of the Caribbean , Belize is a laid-back paradise very similar to the cruising grounds of the South Pacific. Known for world-class snorkeling and scuba diving, superior chartering in protected waters, and unparalleled natural beauty, a Belize cruising vacation is unique and special.

Made up of over 450 sensational islands and cayes, a Belize yacht charter offers the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation. Create your own destiny or follow one of our carefully-detailed Belize itineraries and uncover the treasures of each island.

Spend your days exploring South Water Caye, part of Belize’s World Heritage Site. Sunbathe on the golden sands of Lark Caye, admiring its pristine beaches. Unleash your inner underwater adventurer and go scuba diving at Belize Barrier Reef. Whether you take the helm on a Belize bareboat yacht charter with your family or hire a skipper as a couple to navigate the Caribbean Sea, we know you’ll have the most relaxing, stress-free, heavenly vacation of your life. Build your quote and book your Belize boat charter today.

Cruising in Placencia

A Belize yacht charter vacation offers balmy easterly trade winds year round averaging between 15 and 22 knots and year-round temperatures of between 74°F to 84°F. The breeze combined with the beautiful weather virtually guarantees a wonderful cruising experience every day in calm waters tucked behind cayes and reefs.

During your sailing vacation in Belize, you will notice that passages are short and the navigation is mostly line-of-sight. When it comes to chartering a boat in Belize, we would advise the following:

  • Plotting courses and heeding the chart is advised due to the many reefs.
  • Keeping a good bow watch and reading depths based on color changes is also important due to seasonal changes in sand bars.

A Belize yacht charter is well within the reach of captains who have basic skills in coastal navigation, much like the BVI and St. Martin . The beauty and unique character of these waters lures less experienced and veteran charterers alike to return time after time for more adventures in one of the best snorkelling and diving locations in the Western Caribbean .

Whether this is your first time experiencing the wonders of a Belize sailing charter or you’ve been witnessing the magic of the islands for years, the secluded anchorages of Belize offer something for everyone. Learn more about the cruising conditions in Belize.

Why Charter a Yacht in Belize?

A Belize cruising vacation naturally focuses on the superlative onboard experience, scenic anchorages behind palm-fringed or mangrove-lined cayes, and the fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving in some of the clearest water anywhere. Forays to restaurants on the cayes to sample local cuisine and exposure to Belizean culture add to the pleasures.

However, a Belize yacht charter can encompass much more, and often does. Belize has so many hidden gems to uncover that many guests add extra time at the start or finish of their Belize sailing vacation to include a guided dive excursion to the Great Blue Hole, a geological wonder of the world located within Lighthouse Reef, or sightseeing tours of the Mayan ruins inland.

Belize is a true sight to behold as white-sand beaches front secluded anchorages with kaleidoscopic colors of brown, orange, green, and blue over the reefs. One of its most remarkable features, making this destination splendid for a Belize cruising vacation, is the Mesoamerican Reef that stretches approximately 350 nautical miles from the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula down along most of the Belizean coast. Only Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is larger.

In Belize, the reef shelters more than 400 cayes. Most are fringed with additional reefs comprised of at least 50 species of hard and soft coral. If you plan on going snorkeling or scuba diving during your Belize yacht charter, you’ll be pleased to know that manatees, whale sharks, and roughly 500 species of tropical fish thrive in these waters, and all manner of seabirds are plentiful, including the Magnificent Frigate and the Brown Booby. If you have any questions or want to learn more about the beauty of a yacht charter in Belize, contact us today.

Placencia Sailing Charter – 7 Day Itinerary

Placencia crewed charter – 7 day itinerary.

If you follow one of our Belize sailing itineraries, you will sail to the beautiful Whipray Caye to soak up the sun and enjoy some of the best fishing in the whole of the Caribbean and Americas, before heading to Lagoon Caye, Lark Caye and South Water Caye.

You can rest assured that, no matter what route you take on your Belize sailing vacation, balmy trade winds blow steadily and sure, promising exquisite cruising as you explore the less traveled charter grounds behind Belize’s barrier reef system.

With so many incredible islands and cayes to explore, it couldn’t be easier to sail around Belize and uncover each of their treasures. Whether you’re taking the helm on a 7-day Belize bareboat yacht charter, or treating yourself to an all-inclusive crewed charter, you’ll be able to spend your days cruising the open waters and discovering new islands everyday.

We think a 7-day boat charter in Belize is ideal because it gives you the perfect amount of time to immerse yourself into the Belizean culture, explore beautiful islands, unleash your inner adventurer and go scuba diving, visit the hidden gems of Belize, and also relax on the deck with a cocktail in hand.

However, you have the freedom to choose the length of your sailing vacation, just like with all our Moorings yacht charters in destinations such as the Mediterranean , Caribbean and Exotics .

  • Head to Ambergris Caye for a day of fishing, where you may be able to catch Tuna, Wahoo, Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, Dorado, Barracuda, Snapper and Grouper.*
  • Discover some of the most spectacular underwater scenery and meet exotic marine life as you go scuba diving at the Belize Barrier Reef.
  • Soak up the sun on the golden sands of Half Moon Caye, a beautiful island that also doubles as a natural monument.
  • Head inland to the Cayo District and visit the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins.
  • Enjoy some of the most incredible sunsets in the world on Caye Caulker.

Note: Due to Belize fishing laws, charterers who are interested in fishing for leisure or sport must hold a sport fishing license. The fees are US $25 per week. You may purchase these licenses at our Belize charter base.

Belize is subtropical, with a mean annual temperature of 80 degrees F, making it the ideal location for a relaxing yacht charter. Trade winds blow along the coast and on the cayes most of the year, keeping temperatures pleasant even in the hottest months, except for a few weeks, generally around mid-August through mid-September. During the height of Summer, temperatures can reach the mid-90s on the mainland.

You may find that Winter storms bring the temperature down to the low 60s. You will find that the rainfall is heaviest in the south and the jungle areas, lightest in the north and on the Cayes.

During your Belize sailing vacation, you can also enjoy water temperatures of between 79 and 83 degrees F, a delightful temperature for snorkeling around the Belize Barrier Reef.

If you’re wondering when to book your Belize yacht charter for, the dry season generally lasts from December to May and the rainy season is typically June-November. Hurricanes occasionally occur and are most likely to hit in August and September.

As the sailing season in Belize runs from November-April, it is the perfect destination for a Winter getaway, much like the BVI, Antigua and St Thomas.

As you embark on your Belize yacht charter, you’ll notice that the tide range is very small at around 11 inches – 23 inches, including the variation of level due to atmospheric pressure and dominant winds.

The waves inside the barrier reef are minimal but the breeze is fresh creating superb sailing conditions.

If you’ve been to the BVI in the Caribbean , or a Mediterranean hot spot like Greece or Italy , and found that the tidal range was ideal for you, you’ll love a sailing vacation in Belize as they all have very similar tidal ranges.

Belize Sailing Catamarans

A sailing catamaran

Catamarans, of course, are traditionally powered by sails. Sailing has a natural romance associated with it. If you aren’t already attracted to sailing, perhaps you haven’t considered the many benefits.

Sailing is Relaxed

The wind isn’t cooperating? That’s ok – it’s what a vacation on a sailing catamaran is all about. If you need to get somewhere, you can always fire up the engines and head to the next place on your itinerary.

Sailing is Out of the Ordinary

When you’re on a sailing catamaran, you can truly go anywhere. Enjoy the food and activities of a local village or find your own remote private anchorage. Get out there where no one else is and experience the freedom that a sailing vacation offers.

Sailing is Still

If noise is a regular part of your life, you probably want your vacation to be about being still and laid back. While there is always plenty to do on any catamaran, there is something unique about moving across the water with no motor noise to the experience.

Sailing is Tradition

Experience what it’s like to move the old-fashioned way while still being connected to all the luxuries of a modern sailing catamaran.

Powercats are Fun

Many of the vessels available on this site come with everything from floaties to slides. If you want to do something a bit further from ship, there’s always going to be incredible things to see and do that you just won’t get any other way.

Belize Catamaran Charter Q&A

How much does it cost to charter a catamaran are catamarans more expensive.

Catamaran charters vary in their cost based on several factors, including

  • Mode of power
  • Crew compliment
  • Luxury of fittings and features

Costs will vary a fair amount based on these factors, and you can see the exact numbers by looking above or searching the website. Are catamarans more expensive? Not at all. In fact, you’ll likely find that a Belize catamaran charter is less expensive than a standard mono-hull sailing or power yacht.

What does the cost of a catamaran charter include?

The cost of a Belize catamaran charters through Private Yacht Charter typically includes

  • Expenses associated with running the vessel
  • 3 meals a day
  • Standard bar
  • Any equipment your specific charter has on board.

Essentially the only thing your rental charge doesn’t include are costs for doing things on land and gratuities (typically 15-20%). Any additional activities off of the boat will likely cost you extra. Please note that every boat will be different. Be sure to read your paperwork thoroughly to avoid any surprises.

What is a catamaran, and how is it different from a standard (monohull) vessel?

Rather than a single hull with a keel to keep the vessel upright, a catamaran is a boat with two hulls spaced apart from each other on either side of the craft. This has several advantages for those looking to take a sailing vacation in Belize.

What are the benefits of catamarans compared to standard vessels?

A catamaran has several advantages over a standard sailing vessel (called a monohull), including a smaller draught, less hull volume, a smaller wake, and probably best of all: an increased area for deck space.

How long is the Belize catamaran charter season?

Ideal seasons for catamaran charter vacations vary by location. Many vessels are not available during the summer due to the hurricane season. The most popular time is during the winter, as people are looking to escape the cold of their local climate.

How long can you rent a catamaran for?

The fees listed on our website are per week, but that doesn’t mean you’re limited to time spans of a week. Along with your own schedule, check out the schedule of availability for your selected sailing or power catamaran.

Do you tip on a catamaran charter?

It is customary to tip your catamaran crew at the end of your charter. The standard is 15-20% of the charter rate.  Be mindful of this additional expense when booking your trip.

What is a powercat and how is its sailing experience unique?

A powercat (short for power catamaran) is a catamaran driven exclusively by engines, so there’s no sails. You get all the speed, smoothness, and certainty of an engine with a powercat.

Will I need to wear a lifejacket?

Only when and where required by law – but not very often, if ever. Your crew will let you know when those times are.

If your question isn’t on this list, or you would like more details before scheduling your dream Belize catamaran charter , please contact us!

Embark the ship at Cucumber Beach Marina and sail to Goff’s Caye, an island that exemplifies why postcards were invented. The two-acre island sits right on the barrier reef, enabling snorkeling straight from the shore, or simply relax in the water on the sandbar with an icy cold beer. Dolphins frequent the waters and on occasions a manatee has been spotted amongst the kaleidoscope of marine life. Look out for the graceful spotted eagle rays, there are several who come to visit the boats to check on any scraps from the catch of the day.

Bluefield Range is a mangrove cluster teeming with wildlife which makes for a fantastic kayaking destination. Kayak through the tiny channels, look out for manatees and even take some bait and a fishing line to try and catch dinner.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

South Water Caye is a pristine 12-acre private island that is one of the most beautiful and exclusive islands in Belize. South Water Caye sits on the reef on the north side of South Water Cut, which is a quarter-mile-wide gap in the reef. Grunts, black groupers, snappers and moray eels all hide out in the overhangs, making for a spectacular snorkeling experience. Sundowners are a must at the Blue Marlin Lodge, a favorite little bar and one of the best in all of Belize.

Man-O-War Caye is a designated bird sanctuary. From afar it looks like any other tiny mangrove island, but upon approach the shore is a frenzy of activity, with birds soaring in the sky above in every direction and the males strutting their stuff (or inflating their red gular pouches) for the females during breeding season. The three different types of mangrove vegetation provide a perfect sanctuary to a variety of indigenous bird species, including pelicans, brown booby birds and the magnificent frigate birds (also known as man-o-war birds).

Tobacco Caye is a five-acre, palm-fringed coral island perched on the barrier reef, which makes it a great place to snorkel or dive from the shore, plus its central location means it is within 10 minutes by boat to some of the best snorkel sites in all of Belize. There are a couple of small laid-back resorts and a tiny beach bar serving fresh coconut water and icy cold rum cocktails with hammocks to lounge in. A group of 39 local islanders call this rock their home and it’s a great place to learn about their way of remote island life.

Placencia was once a sleepy seaside village that is slowly growing up into a small popular beach town, with a collection of local hangouts and some more international and upscale spots, making it a great stop off point for those wanting to indulge in a spa treatment, have dinner on shore, check out the local arts and crafts shops and lots more. The main street has won the Guinness World Record award for being the narrowest main street in the world, making a popular photo op! The mixology at Rumfish Y Vino is not to be missed and a recommended cocktail is the ginger mojito.

Ranguana Caye is a remote island on the barrier reef home to a tiny resort with colorful wooden structures, plus a fun beach bar that is welcoming of sailboats and day visitors. The resident parrot, Charlie, is a star attraction, along with the tall swaying palms and pristine white sands of the island.

Pelican Cayes is a great anchorage on the journey north or south, as this hidden-away collection of mangrove islands are surrounded by some of the most impressive coral heads in the country and teem with incredible marine life. Furthermore, there is a tiny bar tucked away that runs on solar panels and a generator, which makes for a fun pit stop after a day on the water and is not surprisingly called Hideaway Caye, as if it would be missed by blinking.

North Long Cocoa is a crew favorite island as it’s a mecca for fishing and snorkeling, with a maze of sand bars, coral reefs and deep channels in between. There are some palapa structures over the water that make for a perfect place to enjoy an al-fresco lunch and 9 times out of 10 not a soul to be seen for miles around.

Enjoy a day sail back to Belize City for a late afternoon departure.

Round-trip group transfer from either the airport or Belize City to the marina (additional transfers at added cost); services of a captain and chef/mate; all meals; ship’s bar stocked with local rum, beer, house wines (1 bottle per couple per day), water, juice, soda and mixers; fuel; and the use of onboard kayak, stand-up paddleboard, snorkel gear, light fishing gear, beach towels and onboard guest amenities.

10% Belize tax, premium liquors, fine wines or champagne, excessive alcohol consumption, scuba diving, ASA Sailing Instruction, off-yacht meals or excursions with shore-based operators, guest telephone or other communications expenses, traditional crew gratuities, or any other expense incurred by the Charterer not listed as included above.

Itinerary Notes

Use the itinerary as a guide only. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, national park regulation or at the captain’s discretion. The ability to be flexible makes this type of small ship cruising unique.

7-Day Northern Itinerary

This 7-day sample Belize catamaran cruise itinerary exemplifies some of the possible destinations in the popular Northern Islands of Belize. Watch our Belize catamaran charter video  for a visual of the experience.

Embark the ship at Cucumber Beach Marina and sail to St. George’s Caye. Steeped in history, St George’s Caye was the first capital of the British settlement in Belize. The island is principally home to private families, however it is possible to use this as a base for some great snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing. On the island there is a very special aquarium in the boathouse at the St George’s Caye Lodge. Today’s tour guide is the resort owner’s young son Karly Ricky Bischof. Karly is a budding marine biologist and if his impressive little aquarium and his knowledge of the 100-plus fish inside is any indication, he’s going to be a good one.

Belize Catamaran Charter Yachts

Sail to the sleepy island of Caye Caulker, fish along the way and enjoy a swim on arrival. “No shirt, no shoes, no problem” is the motto of this island and typifies the vibe. The white sandy beaches, ocean breezes, fresh seafood, azure waters and a fantastic barrier reef on its doorstep make it a perfect place to relax and unwind. A trip to Caye Caulker is not complete without a late afternoon beer or a rum punch at the Lazy Lizard bar at The Split–a lively swimming area which separates the two islands of Caye Caulker.

Enjoy a morning of snorkeling at one of the Northern Marine Reserves. Select from the north cut of Caye Caulker, Coral Gardens or Tuffy Channel for a morning’s snorkeling.

The not-to-be-missed Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley has to be done in a smaller tour boat, which can be arranged for an extra charge using the local tour shop. Swim amongst beautiful shoals of tropical fish, turtles, eagle rays, stingrays, moray eels and grouper. Follow this with a dip at Shark Ray Alley, a site where local fishermen used to clean their catch, which attracts more carnivorous species such as big southern stingrays and nurse sharks!

Ambergris Caye is the most northerly Caye in Belize and touches the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. Lying only a quarter mile from the barrier reef, it’s one of the best locations in the world for scuba diving, snorkeling and sport fishing. The main town San Pedro has the broadest range of tourist amenities in Belize, including art and craft shops, boutique hotels, fine dining establishments and plenty of fun local eateries to explore.

For those wanting to get off the boat and explore, consider renting a golf cart and going north. There are some internationally acclaimed fun beach bars, boutique retreats for spa treatments and some of the best beaches on the island to relax on, including the (not so secret) Secret Beach.

Swallow Caye has been declared a wildlife sanctuary to protect the manatees and other marine life that call it home. Manatees, also known as sea cows, are gentle, slow moving, plant-eating herbivores and their closest living relatives are elephants and aardvarks. They can grow over 13 feet in length and weigh up to 3,500 pounds. Despite being an endangered species, manatees are present in the waters of Belize and can be seen throughout the year. (Please note it is not possible to swim with the Manatees).

Goff’s Caye is an island that exemplifies why postcards were invented. The two-acre island sits right on the barrier reef, enabling snorkeling straight from the shore, or simply relax in the water on the sandbar with an icy cold beer. Dolphins frequent the waters and on occasions a manatee has been spotted amongst the kaleidoscope of marine life.

Enjoy breakfast under sail as the ship makes her way back to Belize City for a late morning departure. This is a wonderful time of the morning for dolphin watching and trolling for fish.

On your private Belize catamaran vacation, the ship’s crew will tailor activities to suit your interests. Adventure activities may include fishing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, swimming, snorkeling, diving (added cost), tender excursions and wildlife observation. Each Belize Catamaran Charter Yacht comes equipped with gear.

Hear It from Travelers Who Have Explored with Us

Even after repeated changes to the itinerary due to Covid, our trip was well planned. From airlines, airport transfers, lodging/boat reservations and tours, all clicked perfectly and we moved through the trip without incident.

We traveled with another family so it was super fun and easy. This trip is a great way to go with 2 families. Kids and adults had a blast!

Our trip guides were incredible. All of them were very nice and very knowledgeable about the trip. Every guide had great enthusiasm and was just very happy to have us.

From home departure to arrival back home all was laid out perfectly to navigate covid, land and sea itinerary. Started with Cha Creek Lodge and the Cayo District area. Moved on to water with a catamaran via Belize Sailing Vacations. Trip of a lifetime for myself, wife and 17 year old girls. We were joined by our friends with two similar age kids, making our group 8. A group of 8 worked well with all aspects of travel, transportation, lodging, dinner and tours.

Accommodations Review

Cha Creek Lodge: We had a great cottage with two queen beds no AC. We were comfortable and enjoyed the outdoor shower (had an indoor one too). We didn't spend much time in the unit during the day and with fans we didn't need AC at night (we were there in June/July). No problem with buds. Very clean, daily housekeeping. Our unit adjoined another unit and as the jungle wakes up many very early (5-6am), be prepared in your screened in unit to be awoken by your neighbors. It was fine to hear the jungle early, but not kids playing like they should at 5am...

Belize Sailing Vacation: We stayed on the 47' Tranquilo. There's one smaller queen cabin which our 17 year old girls used was fine for them. We had a bigger cabin with tons of storage and a nice bathroom. Our friends had a similar cabin to us and their boys used the bunk bed cabin. The cabins worked for all of us just fine as we used the cabins for sleep/storage only as we hung out in the galley or top deck. AC is provided via generator while sleeping when not on shore power and was comfortable. So, it can get hot with no wind while not sailing but the ocean was right there to jump in. Each day the beds were made and the bathroom tidied up. Our boat allowed us to take very short showers for about half our trip until we could fill the water tanks so be prepared for a quick get wet, turn off, lather/shampoo and quick rinse. On the boat we had good snorkel gear, 2 kayaks, 4 paddleboards (only needed 2), Manny's fishing/spear gear, motor dingy.

Meals Review

Cha Creek Lodge: We ate all meals at the Lodge. The menus were simple with popular and local choices. ALL were great. Dinner portions on the smaller side if you had a long day out on tours, but if you order a soup/salad you are fine. The bar had fresh fruit drinks and always had ice/water to fill your water bottle. The to go lunches with tours were always fresh and lots of choice, even local bean/rice/chicken and cold drinks (you will see other tour groups and their lunches did not look as good and was missing table cloths).

Belize Sailing Vacations: AMAZING food cooked by Cainee. Each meal different from the day before. You got a breakfast, simple snack, lunch, snack/app and dinner/dessert. Each based on the day of activities and when start breakfast and done sailing. Breakfast ranged from egg/meat to yogurts/continental. Always had coffee going before anyone was up. Fruit galore. Simple snack was usually after our first dive and was chips/dips/fruit. Lunch was always enough and again had a variety of meals. Dinner was always great and if you catch enough fish/lobster you'll have a great dinner. You'll also have chicken and or brought/bought fish along the way. Again food was amazing. The beverages were also good as we were provided enough non alcoholic drinks (coke, sprite, ginger ale, grapefruit and juices) and alcoholic (beer and 3 rums). Lots of options to make any tropical drink. We brought some vodka and tequila from the duty free store and this was nice to have to mix it up, but would have been fine without. Drinking water came from a large container and was good quality.

Crew & Guides Review

Chaa Creek Lodge: The local guides (bird hike, butterfly, night hike, horseback, Caracol, ATM) were very knowledgeable in local wildlife, plants, culture, history. Each were enthusiastic in telling their personal local story, historical facts and knowledge of the area. They were definitely not just along for the ride and wanted you to experience/learn while you were with them. I believe Cha Creek Lodge mostly uses their own staff as guides and not outside companies, I think this helped in them connecting better with our group. Unfortunately I do not remember names.

Belize Sailing Vacations: Manny and Cainee where great hosts on the boat. You felt safe in Manny's hands as he always was the foremost captain waking before you rose, sailing the boat all day, with you on all excursions/snorkels, spear fishing fresh fish or setting the trolling gear, getting whatever you needed and going to bed after you. Also he was very knowledgeable of the wildlife, sea, islands, people and Belize; on top of being friendly and funny. Cainee was a hard worker also rising before you and going to bed after you. While helping Manny with some boating like anchoring, she never stopped cooking, cleaning and making sure you were having a good time.

Itinerary Review

On Land: Cha Creek Lodge was very nice. The accommodations, food and staff were great but even better were the activities at the Lodge (Reserve) and their own guides taking us off site. At the Reserve we horseback rode, tubed, rafted the Mecal River, bird watched, live butterfly exhibit, Belize/Mayan history and to top it off howler monkeys and other wildlife all around you. The guided tours though were special, including Caracol and Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave. Caracol was bit of a drive but worth it with few tourists (I'd guess less than 50). The ruins are amazing with our guide providing great history. I won't go into depth as you can read other docs on what is here. After Caracol, along the way back ended with the cool water swim at Big Rock Falls (kids loved the rock jumping), this was a great way to break up the drive.

ATM was even better with seeing real Mayan sacrifice urns and skeletal remains. It starts by navigating the wet cave with some harder maneuvering/climbs but nothing too hard with your guide's help and didn't feel claustrophobic. At a point you leave the cave river and head up into the cave. The various chambers were amazing as you made your way to the end with an entire skeleton on display. There were some gigantic chambers which were some of the biggest I've seen. At Cha Creek Lodge we had 3 full days but 4 would have been better so we could have spent more time in San Ignacio or local towns (1st day - arrive late/pool, 2nd day - rest/butterfly/Horse/bird watch/pool, 3rd day - ATM/raft, 4th day - Coracal/Big Rock, 5th day - leave late morning). All guides from Horseback to ATM were well versed in the local/mayan history/wildlife.

On Sea: Upon arrival to our Belize Sailing Vacation Catamaran (Tranquilo) for 8 nights, we were greeted by Captain/Master fisherman/diver Manny and 1st Mate/Cook Extraordinaire Cainee. Really nice boat. We were very fortunate our first day on the boat was opening lobster season. We speared fish with the great help of Manny and had enough lobster for days. We added other fish caught off the boat over the trip as we trolled from snorkel/night spots. The snorkeling/scuba (dive) were great with each spot offering a bit different dive whether different coral or fish or beach. Most days were slower with breakfast around 7-8, move on to next island/reef, dive, lunch, move to next island/reef, dive, dinner. Our group was pretty active enjoying at least 2 dives a day, enjoying books/games/swimming/sun/learning from Manny/Cainee. We visited some islands and hung out in the sun. Had a couple off days with only one dive or none. We enjoyed Placencia and other small island hikes/bars. We stayed on mainland only one night. We always had enough great food, drink and ice.

Transportation Review

Airlines and ground transportation were great. This includes the required covid tests. Luckily the airlines were on time and our ground transportation was always there meeting us.

After sitting idle for 16 months from traveling outside of the US, it was awesome to finally venture out and have it be to Belize! This was a trip that was postponed from 2020 and it exceeded our expectations in experience, accommodation and activity. (We had) a desire to go on a sail boat, snorkel and dive and get out to the Caribbean. We were able to dabble in the interior for some jungle love and then on a sailing catamaran extravaganza around the cayes of Belize. We traveled with another family so it was super fun and easy. This trip is a great way to go with 2 families. Kids and adults had a blast! The mantra of the trip "Now we're doing something" couldn't have rang more true!!

Chaa Creek was beautiful and our villa was quite fancy. Large windows, spacious, a/c, our own pool and howler monkeys hanging out next to it. The catamaran "Tranquilo" was equally as nice. It fit the 8 of us plus the 2 crew just fine. Had a/c in the rooms, seemed to have plenty of storage, and the bathrooms worked fine.

Food at both the lodge and on the catamaran was wonderful. All fresh and uniquely prepared. Kainie from the boat was amazing in what she prepared and even went the extra mile and gave us a 4th of July picnic since we were there for the holiday. Just awesome.

Our group loved the ATM wet cave where you swam and splunked through big caverns and narrow passageways only to come to a part of the cave where old pottery relics and skeleton bones dated 1600 years were left behind by Mayan people. The Mayan ruin of Caracol. The fishing, snorkeling and diving of the incredible reefs of Belize. There is not much not to enjoy but I probably would not have done the tubing from Chaa Creek as it was long and slow.

I think if you have a group that would like to go to Belize spending the money on a charter boat is the way to go. So intimate, lots of flexibility and fun. The kids were taught to spear fish by our captain, sailing to the different cayes was amazing. I would have liked to have seen some more local communities but that can be for the next sailing trip. Being in the jungle and at Chaa Creek was also a great side trip to do in addition to the boat. So glad we got to experience both the jungle and sea!

Transportation was arranged via Chaa Creek and Belize Sailing Vacation. All were flawless and we were met on time with comfortable travel vehicles all equipped with a/c which was great since it was so hot and humid!

Communication about expectations and how to prepare were spot on and well needed since it had been awhile since any of us had traveled out of the country. With all the nuances added due to Covid we never felt uninformed about changes or requirements. Pretty seamless. Adventuresmith also provided us with a useful app that had all of our pertinent information, flights, etc for easy access to resources.

Adventuresmith prepared us in such a way that we always were kept abreast on any and all changes, requirements or nuances with the trip that we needed to be aware of. The app we had that held all of our information was pretty slick. Trip information and details were complete and accurate. Friendly and knowledgeable staff that were genuinely excited for us to travel.

Traveler Advice

Flights seem to change constantly so keep up with it. Make sure to do your research on what excursions you want to do and ask questions. Sometimes while you're in the country of travel you need to work a little for clarification for some of the excursions or experiences.

Our trip guides were incredible. All of them were very nice and very knowledgeable about the trip. Every guide had great enthusiasm and was just very happy to have us. (Our fellow participants were) very good. They were as active as us and very kind. They were also very social.

Chaa Creek and the sailboat were both great. In Chaa Creek your rooms are very open and comfortable and it had a nice pool for you to cool off in. The sailboat was great too; you can jump off it when you're stopped and the rooms are very cozy. It was amazing that the hotels we were staying at let us pick what we wanted to do; the boat also did the same and it was great.

I liked every meal I had on this trip. All of it was fresh and very well prepared. The meals on the boat were sometimes even fish we caught while moving.

My most enjoyed experience on this trip was scuba diving. Scuba diving was super fun and a great new experience for me. We saw super cool fish and creatures and the overall experience was great. My least Favorite experience was rafting down the river at Chaa Creek. You really have to raft at a certain time when the river is full and running fast; sadly, we did not go at that time and it was very slow and we had to paddle the entire thing.

The transportation was always on time and they used very good cars. The drivers were very nice and wouldn't be mad if you had to stop.

Be ready for the heat.

Catamaran Charter Destination

Considered one of the world's most spectacular habitats, beautiful, ancient, mysterious Belize has the largest barrier reef in this hemisphere. With hundreds of unpopulated "cayes", unlimited miles of protected sailing inside the barrier reef and legendary snorkeling, it is truly a cruising paradise.

Belize is a fascinating mix of ancient Mayan culture, British and Spanish colonialism, and advanced ecological planning. 3,000 year old limestone ruins and caves share space with rain forests full of jaguars, howler monkeys and toucans. English is the primary language, and Belizeans enjoy an enlightened government and thriving economy with a strong focus on ecotourism. Its natural beauty is now protected by preserves covering one third of the entire country. This commitment extends over most of the pristine turquoise waters that lie right under your boat.

Explore South America’s sensational Mesoamerican reef on a catamaran charter Belize and roam these uniquely sheltered clear waters, meeting howler monkeys and exploring each Mayan ruin and beachfront jungle as you go from the Turneffe Atoll to Glovers reef and Hatchet Caye. Belize is a totally unique catamaran charter destination!

Sat on the NW of the Caribbean Sea in Central America, Belize is a British protectorate. Prior to the Brits and Spanish, it was a major territory of the Mayans in this part of the world. Let’s take a look at where you can go and what you can do on a Belize sailing vacation.

Belize Destinations

There are many things to enjoy, old and not so old on a Belize yacht charter. The oldest of all is the Belize barrier reef that is the second biggest in the world after the one in Australia, and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site marine reserve thanks to its important marine ecology. Most bareboat charter sailors will sail inside the barrier reef - charter companies will rarely if at all permit you to sail offshore of the reef thanks to the poorly charted coral heads beyond.

On the mainland and islands you will run into the odd Mayan ruin that are dotted around the Central America country, often lost deep in rainforest. These date back 1,200 years in some cases and are an opportunity to see hints of civilisations destroyed for our own.

Just south of Belize City is Old Belize, a tourism centre on the mainland. In Old Belize you can enjoy the fun to be had and perhaps get an understanding of the Mayan ruin locally. Cucumber Beach Marina is also an important yacht charter hub from which you may begin your Belize yacht charter.

Only 35 miles of east of Belize City, you may wish to visit Belize’s most popular holiday destination, Ambergris Caye and its capital, San Pedro. San Pedro is on Belize’s largest island and is a year round party town with festivities and fun to be had almost around the clock. Caye Caulker is nearby, a very chilled out island that still has much of the buzz of its bigger brother, Ambergris Caye.

On a yacht charter with skipper and crew to look after the navigation you could get out to Lighthouse Reef, an atoll with the famous Blue Hole diving location. This is a world renowned bucket-list dive for many, who descend to their limits and in some cases even encounter the resident hammerhead shark that lives here!

For those who want to go scuba diving at the Great Blue Hole on Lighthouse Reef, you will need a local skipper on board to navigate you safely beyond the Mesoamerican Reef thanks to the challenging navigation and poor charting of underwater obstacles. The water is deeper so larger yachts can navigate these waters - though even a 12 metre yacht can run aground on a subsurface coral head that isn’t on the charts!

At nature reserves such as South Water Caye or Hol Chan Marine Reserve you will run into a huge array of wildlife including whale sharks and a variety of birds, rays and other species living on and around the reef. South Water Cay is a very popular destination for snorkeling and scuba diving too thanks to its great coral reef.

Most charters start in Placencia, from where you can sail out into the Cays, or head inland for the bizarrely-shaped Placencia Lagoon, a must-visit inside the Placencia Peninsula. Placencia gives you access to the southern stretches of the Belize Barrier Reef and cays within. Take a SUP and paddle across the sheltered Lagoon Caye.

A crewed yacht charter is one of the best ways to enjoy a Belize yacht charter holiday. With an often large vessel just for you and your fellow charter guests’ use, on a crewed yacht charter the skipper and crew will look after your every need afloat. They will look after the tender as you venture ashore on cays like Wippari Cay and Lagoon Cay, and perhaps make suggestions as to the best spots to enjoy a first class meal or activity of your choice.

On a bareboat charter catamaran charter you will have the space and added privacy to get the luxury yach t from A-B at your own pace.

Martinique Catamaran Charter Types

Though you will often have to have a sailing license for a larger vessel, a bareboat charter will give you complete freedom and privacy to do what you want. Unlike a monohull sailing yachts, a catamaran charter yacht will often come with en suite heads in all the cabins, an AC generator and all the comforts of home as you captain your own ship.

A skippered catamaran charter can range from a 46ft+ catamaran. The skipper aboard will look after the sailing and make suggestions as to your next destinations, with you playing as much or as little a role in getting from A-B as you want. It is customary to pay a tip at the end of the trip, on top of the $100-$150 a day fee for the skipper you pay as well as the basic charter fee.

A crewed charter could mean a 60ft yacht with skipper and host/chef, but could also mean a luxury fully-crewed yacht charter with a whole team of people looking after your every need. As well as sailing the vessel up the the waters inside and outside the barrier reef, they will cook, look after the housekeeping and water toys, and provide you with the service you expect at the top end of yacht charter holiday experiences.

Catamaran Types in Belize

Sailing Catamaran

Ranging from a 40ft yacht to much, much larger, this will be enjoyable to sail (particularly with the wind aft of the beam) and unlike a monohull sailboat will often have en suite heads in all the staterooms. You will have plenty of entertainment space aboard and even the smaller vessels will have room for water toys such as paddleboards and kite surfing gear or even diving gear and jet skis. If the windage of the catamaran sailing boat gets too much, powerful twin engines will be able to get you upwind to your next destination too!

Motor Catamaran

Ranging from 46ft to over 100ft LOA, you can charter a luxury motor yacht catamaran with crew or bareboat. Thanks to the wider beam they are more stable than a monohull motor yacht (no one going green at sea unless too much drink was involved!) and much faster. This could allow for longer legs, perhaps to Ambergris Caye and onward to Lighthouse Reef.

What can you do on a Catamaran charter in Belize?

There are three broad types of sailing holiday to be had in Belize - family, outdoor or party.

Partying can mean stays in fun spots like San Pedro or Old Belize - or something a little wilder on the Placencia Peninsula!

Family holidays are the bread and butter of the Belize economy. You can relax in great places like South Water Cay or Caye Caulker.

Active holidays The Blue Hole on Lighthouse Reef is on every scuba diving bucket list!

What does an average day on a Belize Yacht charter look like?

A catamaran charter boat charter in Belize can mean a variety of things to different people. The sailing is reliably excellent so a blast at sea every day will be a core part of the fun.

For the family or older ones, you can sail between hidden coves and quiet sandy beaches, while visiting fishing villages and quieter resorts.

You will want to sail for several hours a day - with the near perfect sailing conditions this is unmissable. Watching the marine life and tropical fish from the windward rail on a beam reach as the catamaran bounds across the sea will be an unforgettable experience.

As such your typical day could be a mix of things, from an early start to blast off to the next island to waking up at lunchtime feeling a little green around the gills and thanking your crew for getting you back aboard. The choice is down to you.

Why Belize is superb for a Catamaran Charter

As an up and coming sailing destination, Belize isn’t on everyone’s list of charter destinations - yet. When you come to appreciate the beauty of the country and fun to be had on a Belize sailing vacation you soon want to come back time and again. With its laid back charm and authenticity, this is a under-explored Caribbean gem.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Catamaran In Belize?

If you are on a skippered or crewed catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail on the Caribbean Sea - you can just turn up at the marina and go.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat catamaran charter. You will need to check with your charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that are approved by the Belize Port Authority:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Rhodes (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipperor Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

US Sailing : The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Best Time to Book Your Belize Catamaran Yacht Charter

Unlike Europe, the sailing season in the Caribbean runs from November to May - perfect for a dose of winter sun. The NE Trades are settled and you will encounter weather between 25-35 degrees C.

Within this period, March and April after the winter northerlies have passed are cooler yet the sailing is just as fun as the rest of the year. Belize is after all a tropical country!

For those who want to try something a little outside their comfort zone, August and September are said to be the very best sailing months of all.

There’s a problem with this - many yacht charter fleets will not be in the area thanks to hurricane season that runs between July and October. If booked and a hurricane is on its way your holiday will be cancelled. There is no minimising the danger of being in the region in a hurricane - there is no high ground and with the general trend for ever fiercer storms, it is not an experience to even risk being around for.

The Climate

North East Trade Winds : Similar to those of the Canary Islands these are regular and can get up to F6 at times, but steady and predictable.

May to November is hurricane season, and while the sailing can be fun it can be dangerous. With climate change as it is, hurricanes have increased in ferocity and frequency, and it really isn’t worth the risk.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.

Geoff and iza.

We own and operate Dreaming On and look forward to the opportunity to show you the magnificent waters of Belize and pamper you with a memorable luxury vacation.

Both of us have been sailing for most of our lives and Dreaming On has been our partner for the last 30,000 miles.

While Iza loves the challenge of creating wonderfully presented, mouth-watering menus, she will also be found in the water, whenever the opportunity arises.

Geoff loves sharing the exploration opportunities that the waters of Belize offer. There is always a new cay or new reef to discover.

After five years of successful chartering in the busy waters of BVI, we made the move to Southern Belize. What a difference! Instead of seeing hundreds of boats a day and fighting for space in over busy anchorages, we may see three other charter yachts on a busy day. Every night we have a cay all to ourselves.

We look forward to sharing this magical area with you.
