Sailfest turnout spikes in 2019

The Sarnia Yacht Club's annual boat racing tournament launched without a hitch this year, far eclipsing last year's turnout as more than 100 sailors from across Southwestern Ontario — and beyond — came for the three-day camp and cruise event.

The Sarnia Yacht Club’s annual boat racing tournament launched without a hitch this year, easily surpassing last year’s turnout as more than 100 sailors from across Southwestern Ontario — and beyond — came for the three-day camp and cruise event.

Sailfest 2019, held at the Point Edward dock Friday through Sunday, saw 105 boaters enlist across five categories en route to one of the most successful events in a decade. Some boaters spent Friday learning and training while the rest embarked early Saturday, spending most of the daylight on Lake Huron.

Now two decades old, the annual event sees teenagers and seniors alike, said Brandy Boston, longtime organizer of the weekend event.

“We were expecting similar to (the 89 sailors we had) last year,” Boston said. “We even had 17 local kids.”

The event has rebounded nicely over the past few years — especially among younger sailors — after struggling to maintain the same strong numbers seen when Sailfest first started. This year, it may have received some help.

“Some of the clubs in Toronto aren’t able to start racing yet due to the high water (on Lake Ontario),” Boston said. “We do have higher water here but we were higher to begin with.”

Racers were split into five groups based on each class of boat: the two most popular classes, radial and 420, and three less popular, laser, force 5, and byte. Spectators were left on shore near the northern mouth of the St. Clair River as the hundred-odd boaters took to the lake each day, returning by night.

Out-of-town visitors were invited to stay on site in tents. Many took the offer, turning the usually quiet yacht club into a vibrant affair through the weekend.

Sailfest’s new online registration could give the event a leg up in the future, Boston said.

“Registration this year is not like one we’re used to. It doesn’t give us those (age) categories,” she said. “But we were able to email last year’s competitors this year and say registration is open. They used to have to come and find us; now we can send them reminders.”
