The architect
Germ á n frers.
This new design was created practically simultaneously with the Swan 78 as a complement to the larger sister of the new bluewater line of yachts. The size seems to be a very popular one. It allows space for a permanent crew with minimum length. The design philosophy and parameters follow the same concepts of the larger version. This smaller yacht has one less cabin in the Owner’s party than the larger 78 but shares the same saloon in the OF and OA versions developed. In order to give the saloon a feeling of space, the galley is locate forward behind an open partition with a direct view to the deckhouse front window. Her medium light displacement hull is powerful and beamy giving very good form stability and a nice motion at sea. The hull shape and parameters, especially the prismatic coefficient has been optimized for fast all around performance in light to medium wind ranges within a modern wide stern envelope.
The steering system includes twin rudders for a positive easy control in all circumstances, and there are a number of draft options for fixed and lifting keels offered. She will be a fun boat to own and sail the waters of the world, and because of her advanced design she is expected to have a long successful life. She is modern but at the same time we have strived to conserve her softness and harmony of the earlier relatives avoiding hard unruly behaviour. The same can be said of the aesthetics, she is new, clean and modern, without being tied up to any short lived fashion. The same could be said of the deck with its modern design, uncluttered surfaces and straightforward, simple solutions to sail handling and life at sea.
Featuring 360-degree windows is the latest evolution of Frers design and combining curved lines and multifaceted surfaces, it looks slim and elegant like a typical wedge Swan coachroof while as practical and panoramic as a raised saloon. If there is an obvious family feeling with the Swan 78, Frers has designed the Swan 65 with markedly elegant and discreet lines, with faceted edges that create even lighter volumes. The aftwards position of the mast – that derives from the most up-to-date concepts in sail plan design – means that it has been integrated in the coachroof, with obvious advantages both in looks and in interior volumes. The cockpit is organised with the typical Swan layout. The forward section is dedicated to guests, well protected by the sprayhood and bimini, and has a table for alfresco dining and entertaining. This area can be offered in two configurations: more open and sporting, with seamless seating and full length table, and more cosy and protected, with surrounding seats and integrated sunbathing area. This layout also provides more interior space, with the owners’ suite aft.
The central area of the cockpit is dedicated to the handling of the yacht, with five powered winches all of the same size, positioned close to the two helm stations, for better handling with limited crew but enough space for a complete racing crew to work efficiently. The transom is curved towards the large opening bathing platform, dedicated to the sun and the sea, with areas that are designed to accommodate cushions and bathing towels. The opening transom also reveals the access to the garage, which can accommodate tenders up to 2.80 m. At the bow, the forepeak is accessed through a large hatchway that leads down to a generous volume that can be optionally converted into crew quarters with separate heads, and still provide substantial stowage space.
The interior designer
Heini gustafsson.
The interiors are offered in two different versions, Owner Forward and Owner Aft, plus various options for the arrangement of bunks, crew quarters and navigation area, making the Swan 65 one of the most flexible yachts on the market, always providing the right solution for owner’s needs and requirements. The day area remains unchanged and features a five meter long saloon, a raised panoramic living area with dining to port and a lounge to starboard. Systems and tanks are recessed under the flooring in the deepest part of the hull, yet are easily accessible; two steps down there is large C shaped galley, well organised for use under sail, and the navigation station, with a dinette layout or, optionally, a traditional chart table with a column for all the electronics and additional stowage for various domestic appliances. In the OF version, there is the large master cabin forward with an island bunk accessible from three sides, and two twin guest cabins aft, each with its own bathroom and separate shower. Two layouts are available here: two single or one double bunk, the latter completely accessible from the side.
The OA version, ideal for those who prefer long crossings, has the guest cabins forward and a full beam owners’ suite aft. In this version room has been made for a workshop in front of of the engine room, which is positioned at full height under the stepway, separated from generators and other equipment. In both versions two alternative solutions are provided for crew quarters: at the bow, or forward of the galley. Both have separate heads. The finish in European Oak and the elegant design, well thought out for long navigations, are touches of the high Nautor standards that have made Swans world famous

World’s coolest yachts: Swan 65
- August 19, 2021
We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. Tracy Edwards nominates The Swan 65
Tracy Edwards says her heart will always belong to Maiden , the 58ft Bruce Farr-designed maxi she raced round the world in the 1989/90 Whitbread Race, now restored and being sailed as part of the Maiden Factor project. “But if I had to choose another one it would be the Swan 65.”
A legendary design in its own right, the Sparkman & Stephens-designed Swan 65 became lastingly famous name in the first ever Whitbread Race in 1973/74. When it was won by Ramón Carlin’s Sayula II , finishing in 133d 13h.
Swan 65 Sayula II
This was the first of many honours for the design: in the following Whitbread three other Swan 65s finished in 2nd, 4th and 5th positions.
2nd placed Kings’ Legend was skippered by Nick Ratcliffe ( Skip Novak was the navigator) and beat Conny van Rietschotens Flyer and Clare Francis’s Swan 65 ADC Accutrac .
When the Swan 65 was first built at Nautor in Finland in 1972 it was easily the largest glassfibre yacht on the market.
Tracy was first bewitched by the design when she sailed on a 65 in the early 1980s. “They are so beautiful, and gorgeous to sail. The interior makes this a boat you could live on forever – the woodwork is sublime.”
Swan 65 stats rating:
Top speed: 14 knots LOA: 19.84m Launched: 1971 Berths: 12 Price: €500k Adrenalin factor: 60%

Tracy Edwards MBE skippered the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Race.
In 2014 she recovered her maxi Maiden in the Indian Ocean, restored her and launched The Maiden Factor to sail round the world and raise awareness for girls’ education.

About the Yacht
Our history.
The Swanning Around journey truly took sail in the aftermath of the global upheaval caused by the COVID pandemic. In 2017, Steve Capell acquired Eve in Sydney, a vessel that had previously circumnavigated the globe under its Italian owners. Steve, drawn to the boat's allure, not only enjoyed leisurely cruises but also raced it along the east coast of Australia.
Enter Ben Roulant, a French professional sailor based in Sydney, who, like Steve, fell under the spell of Eve on the docks of Noumea. Following a memorable Sydney to Hobart race, the crew set their sights on Europe in 2020 but made it only as far as New Zealand due to unforeseen circumstances amid the pandemic ( read article ).
Two years later, determined and resilient, the crew departed from Sydney once more, this time heading towards Bali. There, they undertook a complete re-decking of the boat before embarking on a journey through the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, ultimately reaching the Mediterranean by winter 2022. ( Eve 2022 Magazine )
As the story unfolded, a new chapter began with the addition of a second owner, Fraser Welch from Australia. Having raced onboard since 2019, Fraser eagerly joined the adventure, further enriching the Swanning Around legacy.
Swanning Around is not just a racing crew; it's a testament to resilience, passion, and the unyielding spirit of sailors who navigate the challenges of both the sea and the times. Join us as we continue to carve our unique path across oceans and races, driven by the love for the craft and the pursuit of extraordinary adventures.
Eve is equipped of three double cabins (each with en-suite), a crew cabin for a total of 9 berths with full sprung mattresses. Her huge main saloon and her large galley will give you all the comfort you need to make your experience aboard unforgettable.
Varnished teak throughout exudes classic charm but she also has a full complement of modern conveniences including deep freezer, air-conditioning, wifi, TV and 6-speaker stereo.
Superbly equipped with modern instrumentation and route planning systems:
- B&G H5000 instrumentation with 7 displays
- Raymarine autopilot, Helm and navigation plotter
- Radios including HF, VHF, AIS, and hand helds
- Iridium and Inmarsat Satellite systems
- Mast mounted 4G with Wifi - provides high speed data up to 30 miles offshore
- Expedition route planning & navigation software
Outdoors, she has a powerful twin mast sail plan and plenty of toys for a great regatta race. And in a few minutes, she can be converted to provide shaded outdoor dining and sun-lounger. Oh, and there’s a 25 hp tender and dive compressor for those that want to get under the water.
She is equipped with a complete racing sail wardrobe and is certified for category 1 ocean races.
- Doyle Stratis mainsail with 3 reef points.
- Hydranet Mizzen sail
- 1 Carbon headsail, \#2 and \#3 Hydranet headsails

Specification
First launched in 1972, the Nautor’s Swan 65 is a classic sailing yacht and was the world’s largest GRP yacht. Designed to be a fast, strong and luxurious ocean racing yacht, the Swan 65 soon proved it’s pedigree by winning the first Whitbread around the world yacht race (now known as the Volvo Ocean race).
As a child I remember following the first Whitbread around the world race - and looking at brochures of the (at the time) magnificent classic Swan 65 that I was sure I would never be able to afford. Some 40 years later, Eve (then called "Kenta" and Italian registered) sailed into Sydney harbour as part of an around-the-world trip and her Italian owner decided to sell her. I was in the market for a 50 ft around the world yacht at the time and, as I walked up to have a look I told myself "it's too big, don't buy it, just have a look to satisfy those childhood memories". But I just couldn't help myself - I made an offer about an hour (and two beers) later.
Having spent the last 4 years sailing around Australia and completing 3 Sydney-Hobart races and a Sydney-Noumea race (which we won!) we are about to fulfill another childhood dream and spend the next 5 years sailing around the world. Cape horn, the northwest passage, tropical cruising, and a heap of regattas and ocean races lie ahead. Not only is Eve the perfect boat for this adventure but I've been lucky enough to find the perfect crew in Ben and Meg. I can't wait! And Eve is big enough to share this experience - so I'm looking forward to new people joining us for various parts of the adventure.

Meet the Swan 65
- By Grace Howard
- Updated: April 17, 2017
Designer Germán Frers has designed the new Swan 65 .
The Swan 65, the sistership to the Swan 78, features the same modern lines and wave-slicing hull form as the larger vessel. Twin blades to allow for maneuverability at high speeds and less draft.
The sailboat is designed to be able to act as a family-friendly cruiser and/or regatta-ready racer.
Cockpit configuration: There are two options for the cockpit: an open layout with a large alfresco dining space or closed with surrounding seats.
Belowdecks layout: Two layout options for the belowdecks accommodations include a master stateroom forward or master stateroom aft. Once decided, there are a variety of options for the guest staterooms and crew cabins.
New and improved: Nautor’s Swan says the design incorporates the latest in sailboat design with mast positioning aft, a J that is larger than the boom length and a mast integrated into the coachroof. Also new to the Swan design are the the 360-degree windows on the coachroof.
The Swan line was created by Sparkman & Stephens, and in the 1980s Germán Frers took over the design for Nautor’s Swan. To date, more than 700 yachts have been produced on Frers’ designs.
“We have strived to conserve her softness and harmony of the earlier relatives avoiding hard unruly behavior. She is new, clean and modern, without being tied up to any short-lived fashion.” Germán Frers

Swan 65-S&S Ketch
Swan 65-S&S Ketch is a 64 ′ 6 ″ / 19.7 m monohull sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Nautor (Swan sailboats) between 1972 and 1989.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

SWAN 65 DESIGN The architect Germ á n Frers This new design was created practically simultaneously with the Swan 78 as a complement to the larger sister of the new bluewater line of yachts. The size seems to be a very popular one. It allows space for a permanent crew with minimum length.

Eve is a classic Nautor Swan 65 sailing yacht that ideally blends excellent offshore and racing performance with cruising amenities.
Designer Germán Frers has designed the new Swan 65.
The legendary Swan 65 is considered by experts to be the Rolls Royce of sailing yachts. These yachts are known for their superior hull strength, control in any sea state, and fine turns of speed. The Swan 65 is a timeless classic.
