History of Formosa

Formosa Boat Building Company Ltd., often acclaimed for its exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail, was established in 1963 in Taiwan. Its inception marked a significant leap in the Taiwanese maritime industry as it was among the first few companies in the region instrumental in building boats entirely from fibreglass. Formosa's reputation for constructively solid, well-crafted, and highly reliable yachts earned it an impeccable status within the international boating community. As the company grew, it began receiving orders for larger boats and soon expanded its portfolio to include mid-sized yachts. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Compass Rose (Rosie) was hauled in June 2019 and for 2 years completely refitted from stem to stern. Never damaged or a salvage vessel! $300,000 was spent on this beautiful yacht.The entire hull, deck and topsides were stripped and repainted with AwlGrip.Bottom was stripped to the substrate, 3 coats of interlux interprotect and 3 coats of micron extra. Teak decking was stripped including the seams and recaulked with teak decking systems teak caulk. All brightwork coated with 4 coats of conversion spar varnish. All port lights were removed and rebed. All 3 deck hatches replaced.

Water maker KATADYN Power Survivor 40E endurance series New Dicksen gimballed 3 burner stove top and oven. New countertop microwave. All new water lines ran throughout, new 4gpm potable water pump and electric 15 gallon water heater. New top/front load dometic refrigerator and isotherm magnum water cooler compressor freezer Main sail, jib and sail covers all replaced through Schurr Sails. Also, includes a spinnaker in good condition. All sheets and halyards replaced. Several thru hulls replaced. New dodger, cockpit cover, eisenglass and cockpit cushions replaced. New cockpit speakers installed with new bluetooth stereo system in salon. Over $15,000 bonding system to ground entire vessel for protection from lightning strikes. 2-30 amp shore circuits New throttle, gear shift, fuel guages and engine guages.

Russia’s Mayak facility masters processing of transportable fast reactor fuel

The installation was created in 1970, after which it was transferred to the Research Institute of Instruments in Lytkarino (Moscow region). The operation of the installation ended in 2015, and the task of removing and reprocessing the used nuclear fuel then began.

“For processing, the fuel composition in the form of metal hemispheres was delivered to the RT-1 plant in a special transport canister made of corrosion steel, and then the canister was loaded into a solvent apparatus,” said Andrey Germashev, head of the production and technical department of the radiochemical plant. “After the dissolution operation, the plant’s specialists isolated and purified valuable components from impurities. A serious problem that could complicate reprocessing is the formation of precipitates in the form of molybdic acid and zirconium molybdate at the key stages of reprocessing, including dissolution, extraction refining and evaporation of solutions.” In the event, solutions were developed that make it possible to process this type of fuel without deviations from the normal regime and in compliance with all safety and quality requirements.

Mayak is the only Russian enterprise that undertakes radiochemical reprocessing of used fuel on an industrial scale. The plant reprocesses fuel from various power and research reactors and the range of reprocessed fuel is constantly expanding. The plant has accumulated extensive experience in processing various fuel compositions based on oxides, carbides and metals.

Performance & Range

Formosa is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Powered by twin MTU engines, she comfortably cruises at 14 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 16 knots with a range of up to 5,000 nautical miles from her 145,000 litre fuel tanks at 12 knots. Formosa features at-anchor stabilizers providing exceptional comfort levels.

Formosa has aboard a plentiful range of water toys and accessories ready to entertain you and your guests whilst on charter. Take to the sea on a Jet Ski offering you power and control on the water. Also there are towable toys offering fun and adventure. Extreme sports fans will appreciate the included Kite Surfers. If that isn't enough Formosa also features scuba diving equipment, wakeboards, kayaks, kneeboards and paddleboards. When it comes to Tenders, Formosa has you covered - with two tenders, including a 8m/26'3" Limo Tender.
