The Captain of any yacht (large or small) has one primary duty, which is the safe manning and operation of the yacht. This includes taking full responsibility for the crew, the tenders  and toys, and the guests. Every crew member falls under the ultimate command of the Captain.

Chief Engineer

The Chief Engineer is in charge of the engineering department and is responsible for its safe and efficient operation. He or she reports directly to the Captain. As well as managing the Engineers, Electricians and ETOs (Electronic Technical Officers), the Chief Engineer has overall responsibility for the engineering department.

First & Second Officer

All superyachts generally have a First Officer on board, but larger yachts would employ a Second Officer as well. The roles are quite similar, but specific duties are likely to vary from one yacht to another.

Chief Steward/Stewardess

A Chief Steward or Stewardess is most likely an experienced crew member who has progressed to this higher-ranking role. They are in charge of the interior of the yacht and manages and recruits the interior staff (such as Stewards and Housekeepers). They report directly to the Captain.

Electronic Technical Officers (ETOs) and/or Electricians are generally employed on larger superyachts where the Engineering department comprises around four or five crew. In some instances one person may fulfil both roles, or there may be different individuals for each. If there is no ETO or Electrician on board, their responsibilities would fall to the Engineer. ETOs and Electricians usually report to the Chief Engineer.

The most important aspect of the Steward/ess role is his/her attention to detail.  This type of position requires the ability to think ahead, provide a service before the guest makes the request and to anticipate events before they happen. Most importantly, you must exhibit the ability to discreetly serve guests in a luxury 6-star manner.

On larger yachts, you will often find a Second Cook/Sous Chef who works along side a Chef.  This person will normally bear all responsibilities in cooking for the crew, side work for meal preparation, and assisting the Chef in any variety of ways.  A new-to-industry individual who aspires to be a professional yacht chef will greatly benefit from holding an assistant position.

The Bosun, sometimes known as the Leading Hand or Senior Deckhand, is likely to be an experienced Deckhand who is able to take on extra responsibilities. The Bosun is responsible for maintaining the exterior of the yacht immaculately and is in charge of the Deckhands.

The Household Manager will intuitively assess Family dynamics, possess a "no task is too big or small"" mentality, and assist with various household duties.

The Household Manager will report directly to the Director of Family Services and will coordinate and collaborate with the Director of Family Services on communications with the Principal. A warm, calm, professional demeanor is required. The Household Manager will demonstrate a willingness to listen and learn and put the Family's needs first. The successful candidate will possess an unwavering commitment to protecting the Family's privacy and confidentiality. The Household Manager must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends. The schedule is generally Monday through Friday from 8:30am 6.00 pm. However, flexibility in scheduling is an important requirement. The Household Manager may travel in advance and support of Family visits to owned properties and may also be requested to remain on property during Family visits. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Provide daily updates to the Principal early each morning. Coordinate with administrative counterparts in the management of a dynamic calendar of professional and personal engagements for the Principal. Provide the Principal with seamless communication and planning for personal, property, and household needs. Supervise the household team including housekeeping staff, family assistant, child caregivers, seasonal staff, and other vendors as required and cover for these positions relative to team member absences. Assist with planning, setup, organization and seamless orchestration of small to large-scale events hosted at Family properties, corporate facilities, and elsewhere as requested. Plan for and oversee organizational projects (e.g., children's bedrooms, playroom, closets, preparing items for donation, etc.). Oversee household inventory checklists for supplies requested by the Family (e.g., cleaning supplies, household items, food, wine, etc.) and ensure team has sufficient quantities at all times. When necessary, coordinate with outsourced vendors for special cleanings. Ensure seamless execution of holiday tasks and transitions including decorating interiors and exteriors of homes for Christmas and other holidays. Ensure the Family is prepared for any miscellaneous holiday needs. Maintain household ""look books"" for future reference. Prepare Family properties for overnight guests and act as a contact for communications with guests. Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience: Bachelors degree preferred and a minimum of five years of experience working in a similar role for a private Family. Adept in all areas of personal service, residential property and home management, hospitality and property oversight. Demonstrated experience in maintaining a private employer's confidentiality, safety, security, and privacy. Superb written and oral communication skills; a gift for distilling information into concise verbal and written formats. Valid U.S. Passport required; willing and able to travel to support the Family at their local, regional, and out-of-state properties. Familiarity with the Spanish language is a plus.

According to a Superyachting Index Report :

“… about 25,000 crewmembers are necessary for today’s fleet of superyachts, but only about 15,000 currently work aboard yachts.”

I can imagine the eyes of any aspiring superyacht job seeker lighting up after reading a statistic like that!

However, it is important to remember that, even though the superyacht market has expanded at a quicker rate than at any other point in its history, finding work as superyacht crew still represents a massive challenge—especially for the inexperienced.

This seems to be an ongoing concern for many industry outsiders. I recently received an email from a friend seeking help on the subject of how to find work on superyachts.

“Hi Matt, my son is just about to leave the Royal Navy after 6 years of service; he wants to work on a superyacht at entry level as a deckhand. Please could you advise where you think would be the best place to visit agencies in person and at what time of year? He is registering with the various online agencies but doesn’t seem to be having much luck at the moment. I am sure that if he could meet prospective Captains and crew it would be the best way for him to sell himself, as he is honest and hardworking. Is it the wrong time of year to do the French Riviera dockwalks, etc.? Your advice would be so much appreciated.” Brian

Is the Superyacht Industry Seasonal?

The first thing to be aware of is that the superyacht calendar is cyclical—not necessarily seasonal in the traditional sense.

It typically involves the summer season spent in the Mediterranean (April–September) and the winter season in the Caribbean (October–March).

At the start and end of a superyacht season, there is usually a lot of chopping and changing going on among superyacht crew as many leave their yachts for a number of different reasons.

Sometimes the position was only seasonal to begin with, sometimes the itineraries of certain yachts do not agree with the wishes of a certain crew, while others may decide to leave the industry to explore other interests altogether.

Whatever the circumstances, it can be a very unsettling time for crew—especially when good friends leave!

Know Your Options

Now that you have an idea as to the movement of superyachts at the various times of the year, it is relatively straightforward to decide where you are going to start your job search. Job boards also exist to help you, and are listed at the bottom of this article.

The two key months here are April (Europe) and October (U.S.).

How To Make It Happen in Europe

If you intend to start your job search in April, then you need to be based at one of the major ports like Palma de Mallorca in the Balearics or Antibes in France. The latter is by far the best option, given the access to other ports and marinas on the French Riviera, Monaco and Italy. Also, certain docks are blocked off in Palma and you cannot access them without an electronic key card.

Once you are in Antibes, you can use the French and Italian rail system to explore literally hundreds of docks and thousands of berths across the Mediterranean’s largest ports and marinas. There a number of boat shows from April onwards including the Antibes Boat Show, the Monaco Boat Show, and later in the season the Cannes Boat Show.

When Should I Arrive?

If you choose to start in Europe, you should plan to arrive around the middle of April. This is early in the season but will give you plenty of time to register with the crew recruitment agencies, start networking with other crew, and implement some dock-walking strategies, such as those found at work on superyachts.

Many superyachts will still be in the U.S. at this stage and/or crossing the Atlantic back to the Med for the European season. If you arrive early enough you can literally be there standing on the docks with your CV in hand as they arrive in the port.

How Long Will It Take To Find Work?

For anyone with little or no experience with the yachting industry, I would allow for a minimum of 4-6 weeks to find permanent work onboard a superyacht.

This time period is not set in stone as you may find a permanent position within a couple of weeks, but I just want to make sure that your expectations are as accurate as possible—there are a lot of people looking to find work on superyachts today, and the role of the deckhand is especially competitive.

You may find that first permanent job in a couple of weeks, but you must be prepared to ride it out if necessary. You can and will find daywork during this period so you will be earning money during this time. Daywork pays anywhere from €12 to €15 per hour or approximately €100 per day.

How Much Should I Budget For Every Day?

This all depends on how much time you spend down at the bar! All jokes aside though, it will depend on how disciplined you are.

You can expect to pay €6 for a pint of beer at The Blue Lady (a popular yachtie hangout) and close to €10 for a drink in a nightclub. You can get away with spending €20 a day on meals as there are many snack bars and delicatessens.

Transport on the French and Italian train system is relatively cheap and I know many yachties that don’t pay for transport on the trains at all. Just don’t get caught as the fines are €25 without a valid ticket and €50 if you hold no ticket at all.

For accommodations, you can expect to pay between €100 and €150 per week in a flat share or crew house. It is often cheaper to rent an apartment with four others, for example, than, say, staying in a crew house. Do the research and network, network, network!

Where Do I Stay?

There are many crew houses in Antibes. However, there are a lot of people looking for work so you can expect the crew houses to be fully booked more often than not.

If you cannot find accommodations in Antibes, I would highly recommend looking in Juan Les Pins or Biot—both are a very short train ride away from Antibes and are accessible by bus and even bicycle. You can do it by foot if you really need to.

What Visas Do I Need to Look for a Job in the European Union?

Holders of European passports do not need a visa. If you hold a passport from outside of the European Union, always check with your local consulate about whether or not you need a visa to enter France or any other country where you decide to start your job search. For holders of non-European passports, you will most likely need to obtain a Schengen visa .

How To Make it Happen in the U.S. (and easier option for Americans)

The superyacht capital of the world is Fort Lauderdale in the U.S. There are many shipyards, docks and marinas, and all are relatively easy to access by bicycle, public transport or car. Around October, the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show takes place, so many of the words finest superyachts will be in town for the world’s premier yachting exhibition. 

Whether you are currently based in the U.S. or planning to travel there from Europe or elsewhere in the world, I would look to arrive from October onwards. Once again, this is early in the season as many yachts will still be in the Med and/or crossing the Atlantic and making their way to the U.S. for the Caribbean season. Many yachts will undergo a yard period at this time of year, as these days it is often cheaper to have maintenance work done in the U..S than it is in Europe.

As in Europe, it’s a bit of a lottery and a very difficult question to answer. Once again though, it will all depend on your level of experience and skill set. Many recruitment agencies like Elite Crew in Fort Lauderdale will not be able to help you with a job search if you don’t hold an appropriate visa for the U.S. ( B1/B2 or C1/D Seaman’s visa). As a guideline it could take someone with little or no experience at least 4–6 weeks to find a permanent position. This factors in how long it will take you to find daywork and thereby gain enough experience onboard a superyacht so that your CV or resume will be seriously reviewed by a Captain or 1st Mate.

There are a number of apartment shares and crew houses available in Fort Lauderdale. Simply search for “Crew accommodation.” 

Once again this depends on how disciplined you are. If you’re going to go out partying at Waxy’s (a popular crew bar) every night of the week, then you’re going to make this far harder than it needs to be. A beer at Waxy’s will cost you $6 and a drink in a nightclub around $8.

You won’t have to spend much money on transport as the best way for you to hit the many docks, marinas and shipyards is by bicycle. You can pick up a new bicycle from Target for $150 or buy a second-hand one from a used bicycle store for around $50. You can get away with spending $30 on food a day, as there are many fast food establishments. Crew accommodations will set you back approximately $100–$150 per week.

For non-US citizens, remember to obtain a B1/B2 visa (currently $185) or C1/D Seaman’s visa before you leave.

Guide - Brexit regulations for yacht crew

Your Brexit questions answered

During our recent webinar on 12/01/2021, our panel of yachting agents answered the following questions.

General regulations

The UK left the EU on 31/12/2020

UK citizens can now only stay in the EU for ‘tourist’ purposes (unless official resident status has been obtained) for 90-days within a 180-day period. 

If you were in the EU before the Brexit date (31/12/2020), you should consider your 90-day period to have started on 01/01/2021.

UK citizens need to have their passport stamped IN & OUT upon

entering & exiting the EU borders

UK citizens need a valid passport, no older than 10 years with at least

6 months left before it expires.

UK citizens are not legally allowed to work in the EU, unless they have a valid work visa. Please note, although working onboard a vessel is permitted as it’s seen as work offshore, some EU-flagged vessels (e.g. France and Spain) require crew who work onboard these vessels to have the legal right to work in the EU. Therefore, UK citizens would require an EU work visa to work on these vessels.

NB: Although immigration and travel rules are the same throughout Europe, every country and port might have slightly different requirements, so we urge crew to work with local yacht agents to assist them with their immigration.

What are the immigration rules for UK crew who arrived in the EU and were working onboard vessels before Brexit 31/12/2020?

Update 18/01/2021

Crew having arrived prior 1/1/21 not having a Schengen entry stamp, cannot be stamped ‘out'. These crew are considered to be in  transit.

UK citizens can only get stamped ‘out’ if you have an entry stamp.

Crew departing to fly out of France can get stamped 'in' prior to leaving the boat and will get stamped out at the last Schengen airport.

However, should you fly out prior to 31/3/21 there is no obligation to get stamped ‘in’ first as you will be in same case as any odd tourist using his 90 days from 1/1/21.

When leaving after 31/3/21 it is compulsory to get stamped ‘in’ to the Schengen area (EU) to avoid suspicion of overstay.

Documents required 

Valid passport:  Must be valid for at least 6 months longer than the planned stay in Schengen and less than 10 years old.

Seaman's book:  A Seaman's discharge book can be used to prove seafarer status, without which no ‘out’ stamp will/should be granted by port immigrations. We must insist, especially for yachts not using agents, that the crew hold a seaman book in order to handle the immigration matters on a legal basis. 

90 days allowance:  per any 180 days running period.  

Prior stamp request in ports:  Most immigration offices can stamp with 24h notice or even less. Some immigration points will ask for 5 workdays notice which is the maximum legal notice time.

Unlike France, Spain is not automatically counting the entry date of crew members who arrived before Brexit as 01/01/2021 and the start of their 90-day allowance. Crew will need to be stamped ‘in’ to Spain by a local yachting agent for their 90-day period to start.

Due to current COVID regulations, UK crew will need to have proof of departure in order to get stamped ‘In’. This might include flights or supporting documentation from the vessel or management company proving their departure.

Immigration/ Border Police Appointment Times:

Must have an appointment & be accompanied by an authorised agent.

Regular appointment times: Monday-Friday from 08.30 - 14,00 (Palma from 08:00 and occasionally available in the evening).

Emergency appointments are available under exceptional circumstances.

Documentation needed: 

Certificate of Registry (if the boat's not already a BWA Yachting client).

Seaman's Book (or documentation from the boat proving employment, plus professional certificates etc).

An updated crew list including the crew member’s name.

Copy of the travel details (where relevant).

What if a UK citizen (crew member) has residency in an EU country?

UK crew/citizens who hold a valid EU residency card or passport have the same residency and immigration rights as EU citizens. They can live, work and travel within the EU and not face the restrictions that standard UK citizens are now facing after Brexit. These crew need to ensure they travel with their EU residency card and passport at all times to show proof of residency. These individuals are not subject to the 90-day rule and will not have to get their passport stamped in or out when they travel or work on vessels within the EU.

How far can crew travel from their vessel (in the port) once stamped out the EU?

Some ports, especially larger commercial ports, can have strict policies on crew movement beyond the vessel once they have been stamped out of the EU. At certain times, local authorities can enforce stricter rules. It is therefore important that crew have their Seaman’s Book with them as this will confirm their status as a seafarer and allow them to circulate shoreside in the port of call and the neighbouring touching towns within the same country (If you are based in the last town on a border e.g. Menton, France, this does not allow you to enter the next country e.g. Italy).

What about UK crew looking for work or dock walking during their 90-day travel allowance?

UK citizens are not allowed to work in the EU (on-land) after Brexit. However, UK citizens are allowed to work onboard vessels within EU waters. But, some EU-flagged vessels (France, Spain) will require non-EU crew to hold a valid work visa. 

What about crew tax declarations?

UK crew who spend long periods of time working on vessels based in EU ports might be liable to pay tax and/or social security charges within the local EU state. We advise all crew to look into the rules and regulations of the individual EU state they are in.

How can UK crew get a Seaman’s Book?

UK crew (with existing or prospective jobs only) can apply for a UK Seaman’s Book in person (at one of the UK Marine Offices) or via post - see full details here . Please note, the PYA has contacted the MCA and they have confirmed that they currently have a 10-week delay in processing Seaman’s Books and have removed the 24-hour turnaround service, so it’s best to wait until these processing times have improved before making your application. In the meantime, we suggest contacting a yacht agent to advise which other documentation is accepted by your local port customs officials to prove your status as a seafarer.

In addition, UK crew can apply for another flag state seaman’s book - this will be determined by the flag state of the vessel on which you are employed. 

Here are some additional details:

Malta is reluctant to issue seaman books to non-Maltese crew if the boat is not based in Malta 

Sweden only issues seaman’s Books to individuals having had merchant marine or navy experience

Panama can issue a seaman book for a great number of nationalities working on a great number of flag states. However, this is a very slow procedure (count 2 months) and the book has only got 4 pages.

At some ports, the PYA Service Record Book has been known to be accepted, however, this will need to be confirmed by a local yachting agent.

Validity of Certification

The below questions have been answered by Richard Falk from the RYA on 12/01/2021.

Has the validity of UK (RYA) certificates been affected by Brexit?

To date we have not been advised of any changes in the validity of UK and RYA certificates  by most EU countries. In Spain, however,  we are advised that vessels under 14 meters which are UK flagged are no longer able to obtain a permit to operate commercially. Therefore, crew who hold UK Certificates of Competence (CoC’s) can no longer operate vessels under 14 meters in Spain , regardless of what flag they are registered under. We are still awaiting a response as to whether this ruling applies to holders of MCA STCW 200 gt COC’s also. 

Are ICCs issued by the UK still valid in the EU?

ICCs are still valid , with the exception of Spain. In Spanish waters, UK ICCs are no longer valid on a Spanish vessel, or on a vessel flagged under any member EU state. Spain has not adopted ‘UNEC Resolution 40’ and are therefore not obliged to follow any of the conventions relating to the ICC, whereas most other EU nations have. Please note, the operation of tenders has not been addressed by the Spanish authorities - this will need to be confirmed with local authorities . It is considered good practice however to ensure that tenders to larger vessels are clearly identified as such in order to minimise any risk of problems. 

What should crew do if they are unsure about the validity of their RYA/UK certificates in individual EU states?

Crew should seek confirmation/clarification on the validity of their certificates in individual EU countries. Right now, the RYA has not been informed by any EU member states (other than Spain) that their certification is no longer valid.

Will RYA examiner and instructor certificates still be valid with EU training schools?

The instructor qualifications are still valid for instructing RYA courses in the EU. Examiner qualifications are also still valid for examining Yachtmasters under exam conditions. 

However, in Spain, the RYA / MCA Yachtmaster CoC which underpins RYA instructor qualifications is no longer accepted by the authorities there. Instructors would therefore need to hold an appropriate Spanish COC or work under someone who is legally able to be in command of that vessel. Those working on a freelance basis from outside of the EU would be subject to immigration laws and cannot instruct as a tourist. our understanding is that examiners are allowed to continue working in the EU and Spain as they are employed by the RYA and effectively travelling on business in the EU.

Working on a superyacht can be an exciting and rewarding career choice, providing opportunities to travel, meet new people, and enjoy a unique lifestyle. However, one of the key requirements for working on a superyacht is having the appropriate visa. There are many types of visas you can get when working on a superyacht, and the ones you’ll need will generally depend on where you will be going.

Today, will discuss the different types of visas required for working on superyachts:

Seafarers Visa (C1/D)

A Seafarers Visa, also known as a C1/D visa, is the most common visa required for working on superyachts. This visa is designed specifically for crew members working on board commercial vessels, including superyachts, and allows the holder to enter multiple countries for the purpose of joining or departing from the vessel. The C1/D visa is issued by the United States but is recognized by many other countries worldwide. To obtain this visa, you will need to have a valid job offer from a yacht and provide proof of your qualifications and experience.

Schengen Visa

A Schengen Visa is required for crew members working on superyachts that will be traveling within the Schengen Area, which consists of 26 European countries. This visa allows the holder to stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. To apply for a Schengen Visa, you will need to provide proof of your employment, a letter from the yacht’s captain or management company, and proof of adequate financial means to support yourself during your stay.

Yacht Crew Visa (B1/B2)

A Yacht Crew Visa, also known as a B1/B2 visa, is required for non-U.S. citizens who wish to work on a superyacht that will be traveling to or within the United States. This visa allows the holder to enter the U.S. for business or pleasure and is typically valid for up to 10 years. To obtain a B1/B2 visa, you will need to provide proof of your employment on a superyacht, a letter from the yacht’s captain or management company, and proof of sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in the U.S.

Australian Maritime Crew Visa (Subclass 988)

Finally, the Australian Maritime Crew Visa (subclass 988) is required for crew members working on superyachts that will be traveling to or within Australian waters. This visa allows the holder to enter Australia for the purpose of joining or departing from a vessel and is usually valid for up to three years. To apply for this visa, you will need to provide proof of your employment on a superyacht, a letter from the yacht’s captain or management company, and proof of enough funds to support yourself during your stay in Australia.

It is essential to research the specific visa requirements for the countries you will be visiting, gather all necessary documents, and submit your applications in a timely manner. Depending on where you plan to look for your first job in yachting and your nationality, you may need to look into what travel visas are required for you to legally enter countries and work onboard. The Seaworthy Stew talks us through all of the current visa requirements…

"What Visas Do I Need To Work On A Yacht?" - The golden question.

B1/B2 Visa – Caribbean and US Season

This is a multi-entry travel visa for yacht crew to work onboard superyachts cruising the US. For the Caribbean yachting season, most yachts cruise in US waters so if you’re not a US Citizen you’ll most likely need a B1/B2 visa. This visa is notoriously hard for greener crew to obtain without boat papers, for more information on how to obtain this visa check out my blog article The B1/B2 Visa To Work on Boats In The US & Caribbean , or for more information check the  US Embassy website .

Schengen Visa – Mediterranean Season

Schengen refers to the EU passport-free zone that covers most European countries. According to Schengen Visa Info, the Schengen visa is a short-stay visa that allows a person to freely travel to any country in the  Schengen Area , stays can be up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes. 

There are three classifications for crew using the Schengen visa;

As a green crew member, you will usually enter on this visa for travel purposes allowing you 90 days within the EU. Some advice here: do not mention anything about work to the embassy, I would also recommend having proof of funds to support your stay and a flight or train out of the EU region, or at least a ‘plan’ to leave the EU after 90 days, this is in case of the embassy questioning you upon entry. 

For specific information on your nationality, I recommend having a look at the Schengen Info Website. Here are some links for  US Citizens ,  South Africans ,  British  and the new rules for  Australians  and  New Zealand  citizens  starting January 1, 2023, where they can apply for a visa waiver prior to their travel to Europe.

According to  The European Commission  website,  from November 2023 , visitors that do  not need a visa to enter Europe  will be able to register with  European Travel Information and Authorisation System  (ETIAS). ETIAS will become a mandatory entry requirement.

Once the EU ETIAS travel authorization becomes operational, all citizens from the  current visa-free countries  will be required to submit an application before their trip. However, for the time being, they can continue to travel to Europe using the Schengen system without applying online for travel authorization. As always please do some research into this on an official government website as information can change according to different nationalities.

Australian superyacht crew visa.

According to the  Australian Government , to be eligible for a Superyacht Crew visa, you must have one of several things. This can be a contract to work, a letter from the owner of the superyacht confirming employment, or a supporter or a sponsor, depending on your circumstances. You can gain a 3, 6 or 12-month visa for crew and you must meet certain requirements, for more details on this check out this Superyacht Australia article and current pricing for the visa on the Australian Government  website .

Seaman’s Discharge Book

Once you are employed on a yacht you may apply for a Seaman’s Discharge Book from the flag state of the vessel. This may be useful for tax purposes and in certain circumstances, it may even act as a passport if you do not have the necessary visa for a certain area. Usually, the boat will be able to help you with your application and will sign off on the documentation.

Places That Do Not Require Travel Visas To Work On Yachts

The UAE, Maldives, Seychelles,  and most of the  South Pacific are destinations that DO NOT require yacht crew to have specific types of travel visas to join. So there is the potential to land a job at the end of the Med season on a yacht that is destined for these places in the winter period. I recommend getting to a med yachting destination by September if you’re planning to jump on the tail end of the Med season to snap up one of these job opportunities.

By the end of October, Antibes can be a ghost town with few yachts in sight – not so good for job-hunting prospects.

Now is also a good time to upskill and perfect that yachting CV because (let’s be real) it’s fierce out there!

Brexit may come as a blow to many British crew who, until 1 January 2021, had the luxury of being able to travel freely around the European Union without many immigration considerations. But, as Kerry Allerton, operations manager at Evolution Yacht Agents in Spain, explains, Brexit now means that British crew fall into the same category as other non-EU crew.

“The UK has now become a ‘third country’ in EU terms and this groups British nationals in with the rest of the world,” Allerton advises. “But it’s very manageable: captains are used to dealing with American, Australian and Kiwi crew coming into Europe – they can enter without a visa but are only allowed to stay in the EU for 90 days within a rolling 180-day period – and the same now applies to British crew.”

Essentially British crew, as with any other British or non-EU nationals, will now get a stamp in their passport when they arrive in any EU country, which will start the clock on their 90-day limit within the EU zone (not just in that particular country). When they join a boat, they may then request to get stamped out of the EU and stamped back in when they disembark, meaning the period they are on a crew list does not count towards the 90-day limit.

“Once crew are stamped onto the boat and out of the EU, most countries allow them to travel within 10km of the vessel,” adds Allerton. “Crew wishing to travel, either temporarily or permanently, beyond that will have to stamp into the EU beforehand.” In summary, any change in crew list involving British crew now requires a stamp.

While there have been some differences in how local immigration offices are managing the situation for crewmembers already embarked on a vessel in Spain on 1 January, the general policy is that these crew do not need to visit immigration to stamp on board and out of the EU. “If you are not stamped in, you do not need to get stamped out,” says Allerton. “Instead, the moment crew disembark they will need to get stamped in – which could be in January or at a later date – and that is when their days in the EU start being counted.”

Riviera Yacht Support has been advising crew on the new post-Brexit regulations for UK citizens in France from 1 January. “As British crew will now be treated as non-EU/Schengen citizens, they will be required to be stamped in and out of the Schengen area when arriving and departing from Schengen states,” explains Campbell Cormack, sales and operations at Riviera Yacht Support. 

“At present there is no visa system in place, but this is set to change. All British crew embarking onto a yacht within the Schengen states will be required to be stamped out of the Schengen to allow a pause of the 90-day period limit and stamped back in to the Schengen prior to debarkation of the vessel. All UK passports will also be required to have a minimum of six months validity for travel.” 

At the beginning of January, Riviera Yacht Support was recommending British crew already on board a yacht within the Schengen states to be stamped out of the Schengen by customs – so as not to cause any problems or issues when leaving or returning to the Schengen states – and successfully organised for a few crewmembers to do so through the customs office in Cannes. 

However, when they took more crew to do the same the following day, they were told that the port office in Cannes would now only permit the stamping out of crew who have been stamped in on arrival to the Schengen area, and that crew who are already in France and have no entry stamp cannot be stamped out.

“So, the next stamp these crew could get is the stamp out, but that will only be when they get to the airport,” explains Cormack. “It’s a grey area – if they change the rules again it could cause issues for crew when they go to leave the Schengen later in the year and can’t prove that they haven’t exceeded the 90-day limit.”

Cormack adds, however, that the customs office in Toulon is currently stamping crew in and out of the Schengen. “It appears we are in a state of flux and things haven’t settled down yet,” he concludes.

Ambra Sartore, ship agent at All Services , provides an overview of the similar situation in Italy; “From 1 January, UK passport holders will be ‘treated’ like Americans, Australians etc., so they do not need to apply for a multi-entrance Schengen Visa and they can stay in the Schengen territory for up to 90 days every six months. On arrival in one of the Schengen countries, they will now get a stamp in to the Schengen, which will be the date from which the 90 days will start counting down. In order to save their days from counting down, they will need to get another stamp out of the Schengen prior to joining the yacht, and again a stamp in once they leave the vessel.”

UK reaches new deal with EU on stopping small boats

The UK is set to sign a new arrangement with the EU’s border agency as part of its efforts to stop small boats crossing the Channel.

The deal agreed with the EU’s Frontex agency will see the UK Border Force co-operate more closely with its European counterparts, exchanging intelligence and collaborating on training, new technology and operations.

The deal however stops short of a returns agreement with the EU.

Home Secretary James Cleverly told ITV News, "this is about helping the EU secure its borders and in doing so, helping us secure ours".

"This cooperation will mean it is quicker, easier and more effective to share information and intelligence and break the business model of those evil people smuggling gangs".

Mr Cleverly will welcome European home affairs commissioner Ylva Johansson to London on Friday to witness the signing of the arrangement by officials from Frontex and Border Force.

Mr Cleverly said: “This government has a plan to break the model of the smuggling gangs, end the abuse of our asylum system and stop the boats. The plan is working with crossings down by a third – but we must go further.

“Organised immigration crime and people-smuggling are global challenges that require shared solutions and ambitions. Our landmark working arrangement between the UK and Frontex is another crucial step in tackling illegal migration, securing our borders and stopping the boats.”

The deal is the latest in a series of arrangements between the UK and Europe, including an agreement reached with France last year to increase co-operation between law enforcement agencies in the two countries.

It also follows discussions between the prime minister and Ursula Von der Leyen, the European Commission president, who agreed in May last year to strengthen co-operation on tackling small boats.

Rishi Sunak had a phone call with Ms Von der Leyen on Sunday and the pair welcomed the conclusion of the negotiations that led to the agreement formalised on Friday.

Mr Sunak made “stopping the boats” one of his five priorities for 2023. The number of people crossing the Channel in small boats last year fell from 45,755 to 29,437.

So far, 1,716 people have made the crossing this year, down from 2,720 in the same period last year.

Mr Cleverly insisted the government was making progress on small boats, "we've been bringing down small boats arrivals, last year there was a 36 per cent reduction compared with the year before.

"That is in large part because of the international co-operation we've had with Albania ", he said.
