The World's First All-Electric Yacht Has a 40-Mile Range and a $500,000 Price Tag
It's being called "the tesla of luxury electric yachts.".
The Future Is Here
On Thursday, 90-year-old boatmaker Hinckley Company unveiled Dasher — the world's first fully electric luxury yacht — at the 47th Newport International Boat Show . Nicknamed after Hinckley's first "picnic style" boat, the 8.69-meter (28.5-foot) long, fully electric vessel represents the next generation of passenger water vehicles. Clearly, we've come a long way from oars and sails, to coal and gas, to powerful electric motors.
“This isn’t just an existing design, where we dropped a couple of electric motors in,” Scott Bryant, director of new product development at Hinckley Co., told Bloomberg . “The boat has been designed, ground up, for electric propulsion.”
Packed with twin 80-hp electric motors powered by BMW's 40-kilowatt-hour i3 waterproof lithium-ion batteries, rechargeable via a dual 50-Amp dock, Dasher is the lightest boat Hinckley has ever made: barely 2,950 kilograms (6,500 pounds).
In terms of price, though, it's not so light. Cost estimates run up to $500,000 — it is a luxury yacht, after all.
Setting the Standard
As the first all-electric luxury yacht, some are calling Dasher " the Tesla of luxury electric yachts ," and it certainly is expected to make a splash.
The vessel promises a performance worthy of any seafarer, boasting a cruising speed of around 8.6 knots [16 kph (10 mph)] and a range of about 35 nautical miles (NM) [64 kilometers (40 miles)]. Dasher can travel up to 22 NM [40 kilometers (25 miles)] at speeds of 15.6 to 23.5 knots [29 to 43.5 kph (18 to 27 mph)].
Though it's the first of its kind, Dasher isn't the only electric boat. The Duffy 18 Snug Harbor is an electric vessel designed for casual cruising, while several companies have designed their own experimental or promotional high-speed electric boats. On the larger scale, China even has plans to build an all-electric warship .
A future in which all boats (and land-based vehicles) are powered by electricity doesn't seem that far off, and Hinckley is excited to make that transition.
“I don’t believe that Dasher will be our only electric-propulsion product. I think what we’re looking to do is to incorporate a bunch of the features that we’re introducing on Dasher into our other products,” said Bryant. “There’s so much going on in the automotive space, and just in the energy-storage space right now, that to not be a part of it is just silly.”

Dutton Surf amphibious vehicle preview: ‘A cross between a car and a rubber duck’
It may be a niche interest, but there are few things more pleasurably weird than driving a car into the sea
Dutton Surf Price £22,000 MPG 30 Top speed 85mph On sea 6mph ( timdutton.com )
Is it a boat? Is it a car? Actually, it’s the best of both – an amphibious vehicle. It’s the ideal solution for anyone who fancies driving to the coast and then… well, motoring out to sea. For the past 50 years, Tim Dutton has been at the helm of his eponymous firm. He started out in 1969 and is justly proud of the fact Dutton is the oldest car company in the world still wholly owned by its founder. He is based in a workshop in the pretty village of Littlehampton where he has his own slipway into the River Arun. Visitors can take a Surf out for a test drive/cruise. You won’t be surprised to hear that owning a dinky Dutton is a niche interest – Tim sells about a dozen a year. Most drivers/captains just want to have fun – who wouldn’t in a vehicle that looks like a cross between a sports car and a rubber duck? – but there are more serious applications, too. Tim’s sold some to the military, and sailors love them as they can simply drive straight out to their yacht’s mooring. If you want to see one of these floating cars – and congratulate Tim on his half-century in the business – he’ll be at National Kit Car Show next weekend and at the Southampton Boat Show in September.

Everything You Need To Know About The WaterCar Panther Amphibious Vehicle
Let's discover more about the revolutionary road and lake-ready WaterCar Panther and find out whether it remains in production.
In The Spy Who Loved Me, there is an iconic scene that sees a 1976 Lotus Esprit Series I, transform into a submarine after Bond drove the car into the water to escape a villain. This scene undoubtedly made every youngster watching the movie want to grow up and purchase that very automobile. But growing up implied learning that such cars don't exist, or at least that’s what they tell you. In 2014, the Daily Mail wrote about a two-seated submarine sports car, inspired by James Bond 's famous sub-Lotus. That particular vehicle could reach a rather impressive maximum speed of 75 miles per hour under the water and came equipped with two water jets set behind rotating vent-like louvers at the front and propellers at the rear. The price for this Bond-like super toy? Nothing less than $1.4 million, but for some lucky millionaire, that’s peanuts to feel like a British super spy for a day.
The submarine sports car wasn’t the only crazy experiment of an amphibious car. In fact, MotorTrend reports that in 1999, engineer and entrepreneur Dave March established WaterCar, a company that intended to build amphibious cars that were perfectly adapted for both land and sea. March brought his vision to reality with the Python, his first WaterCar prototype, which broke vehicle speed records in 2010, achieving 127 miles per hour on land and 60 miles per hour on the water. The Python, however, needed a boat launch to reach the water because of its low ground clearance, so March and his team started developing the Panther, which was even more impressive than the Python. For those who always dreamed about driving a James Bond-like super car, here’s everything you need to know about the WaterCar Panther amphibious vehicle.
We previously reported that WaterCar had ceased operations and was no longer building amphibious cars. This is, in fact, not true, so we have updated this article accordingly.

It Was A Long Road For The Python To Get To The Panther
Most investors and engineers will tell you that there’s a lot of time between concept and prototype, and along the way, you’ll encounter many unexpected challenges. We can see this even in the development of a fully operational amphibious vehicle. Because when it comes to amphibious cars, there have been several significant attempts at developing them over the years, demonstrating that automakers and engineers never gave up on the idea of seeing vehicles swimming in lakes and oceans.
For instance, the German army deployed the Volkswagen Type 166 Schwimmwagen back in the Second World War . And years later, the public got to see the Amphicar 770 at the 1961 New York Auto Show . Since then, other inventors came up with their own versions of amphibious cars. One of them was the WaterCar Python prototype.
The Python “ looked like a fourth-gen Chevy Camaro and succeeded at being a far better amphibious vehicle than the original Amphicar,” says MotorTrend . “The Corvette-powered Python set amphibious vehicle speed records in 2010, reaching 127 mph on land and 60 mph on the water.”
The Python, however, had a drawback. It needed a boat launch to enter the water because of its low ground clearance. Fast-forward, and Dave March came up with a new amphibious vehicle that didn’t require a boat launch. This was the Panther, an amphibious car modeled after the Jeep, which had a hydraulic suspension that can be instantly raised or lowered.

This Is What Made The WaterCar Panther Amphibious Vehicle The Coolest Jeep-Like Car Of The 2010s
Even though amphibious cars come in all shapes and sizes and gearheads hardly consider them a novelty anymore, the Panther was a special breed due to its distinctive characteristics. The WaterCar came equipped with a rear-mounted Honda 3.7-liter V6 engine, and a four-speed manual gearbox. MotorTrend says that the vehicle achieved propulsion at sea thanks to a Panther Jet engine driven by the V6. The Jeep-like WaterCar could reach a top speed of 80 miles per hour on land, and on water, it reached 45 miles per hour. If the Panther caught your attention, and you are considering purchasing a WaterCar, you should check out the company's website for details on its latest models and developments, including the introduction of a new electric model!

Description
‘From Land to Water: The Amphibious Car’
The Amphicar was manufactured in West Germany and first made an appearance in America at the 1961 New York Auto Show. Originally designed by Hanns Trippel, these amphibious cars hit the US market from 1961 to 1967. Most notable for their ability to cruise on land and operate in the water, these cars were a fun new invention in the car world for that time.
History of the Model
The Amphicar 770 (770 represents 7 miles on water, 70 miles an hour on land) first surfaced at the 1959 German Auto Show and a couple years later entered America in 1961. The convertible is a four-seater and was powered by a rear-mounted, four cylinder Triumph Herald engine of 1,147 cc, which generated 43 hp. In order to work on land and in water, the engine drove the rear wheels on land and two propellers when the car was in the water. The front wheels steered both on land and in the water, and the car/boat had four speeds and reverse. The doors locked shut for water travel. On land the Amphicar’s listed top speed was 90 mph, but road testers could only get it to about 65 mph. It was deemed better in the water, reaching a speed of 10 mph. Although the car looks small, it weighed in around 2,300 pounds. The cars were so heavy because they had to be rigid and waterproof in order to take on land and water.
Restoration or Preservation History
This car came from Upper New York a number of years ago and was purchased by the present owner as a project that had been started. This car had basic body repairs made, all stripped and painted. All the car’s mechanics were checked, repaired, or rebuilt as needed. The parts needed were purchased from Gordon’s Imports, Inc. in California. The car was water tested and driven in the water a couple times. The car presents itself very well and should perhaps have a basic survey to be water ready.
Market Trend / Comparative Analysis
When the Amphicar hit the market between 1962 through 1967 they sold between US $2800-$3300. In 2011, an Amphicar sold for a whooping $123,400. Over the past couple years; particularly from 2007 to 2014 Amphicar’s have ranged in price. Depending on the model and the location of where the cars were sold, the price for one has ranged from US $27,500 to $123,200. The Amphicar that sold for $123,200 was the only one to sell for more than $100,000. Despite this fact, a large majority of Amphicars has sold for prices close to $100,000. According to data, in recent years the Amphicar has gone up in price and continues to do so in the car market.
The Amphicar 770 will forever be a memorable car as it can take on both the open road and the open water. These models were the only mass-produced consumer amphibious cars in history, which makes them especially unique. The US Coast Guard even recognized them as legitimate boats. These dual-purpose cars made it easy to enjoy a nice car ride or a boat road.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River
A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.
Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.
Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.
An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.
The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.
The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.
The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.
Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.
The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.
Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

Check out Moscow’s NEW electric river trams (PHOTOS)
Water transportation has become another sector for the eco-friendly improvements the Moscow government is implementing. And it means business. On July 15, 2021, on the dock of Moscow’s ‘Zaryadye’ park, mayor Sergey Sobyanin was shown the first model of the upcoming river cruise boat.
The model of the electrical boat with panoramic windows measures 22 meters in length. The river tram - as Muscovites call them - has a passenger capacity of 42, including two disabled seats. The trams will also get cutting edge info panels, USB docking stations, Wi-Fi, spaces for scooters and bicycles, as well as chairs and desks for working on the go. The boats will be available all year round, according to ‘Mosgortrans’, the regional transport agency.
Passengers will be able to pay with their ‘Troika’ public transport card, credit cards or bank cards.
The main clientele targeted are people living in Moscow’s river districts - the upcoming trams will shorten their travel time in comparison to buses and other transportation by five times, Mosgortrans stated.
As the river trams are being rolled out, Moscow docks will also see mini-stations, some of which will also be outfitted with charging docks for speed-charging the boats.
Moscow is set to announce the start of the tender for construction and supply in September 2021. The first trams are scheduled to launch in June 2022 on two routes - from Kievskaya Station, through Moscow City, into Fili; and from ZIL to Pechatniki.
“Two full-scale routes will be created in 2022-2023, serviced by 20 river trams and a number of river stations. We’ll continue to develop them further if they prove to be popular with the citizens,” the Moscow mayor said .

Livestreamer promised B.C. man cash to drive car into sea: police
Charges are being considered in connection with the reckless incident, police said.
Social Sharing
Police in Port Moody, B.C., say a 19-year-old man from the Lower Mainland could be charged after he allegedly drove his vehicle into the sea as part of a livestreamed video.
In a video of the stunt streamed on the live video platform Kick and later posted to X, YouTube and other social media sites, popular U.S.-based streamer Adin Ross can be seen talking with the man before he drives the car into the water.
In the video, Ross tells the man to state his full name and say, "Adin Ross is not liable for any of this."
After doing so, the man gets into his car and drives it into the ocean. He leaves it there and returns back to speak with Ross, who can be heard telling him, "Once I see that a towing company is there, I'll send money."
Shortly after, police arrive on the scene, apparently tipped off by internet activity.
Man arrested after allegedly driving car into the sea for livestream stunt
Ross has 1.12 million subscribers on Kick, according to publicly viewable numbers on the platform. He did not respond to CBC News' request for comment.
Police tipped off by internet activity
Const. Sam Zacharias said officers were called to the city's Rocky Point boat launch at around 10 p.m. PT Monday.
He said the department was initially tipped off about the incident by the Vancouver Police Department. Officers in Vancouver received a call from someone out-of-province who was watching the livestream.
"Vancouver police were able to decipher it was taking place in Port Moody and they immediately notified us and we were on-scene within moments," said Zacharias.
Police said they arrested the driver at the scene and that he has since been released, while charges such as mischief and dangerous vehicle operation are being considered.
"This incident is very reckless, very careless. It's really concerning that someone would go to these lengths to pull off some social media stunt," he said.
Charges could be laid
Police are asking anyone with more information on the case, including video circulating on social media, to contact investigators.
Zacharias confirmed the man was promised financial compensation for the stunt.
At this point, Zacharias said, it's unclear whether Ross could also face charges.
"It is a criminal offence to aid and abet a criminal offence in Canada," Zacharias said. "The complexity here is we are dealing with somebody who does not live in Canada or anywhere locally."
Police said the car remained in the water for more than 12 hours before being removed, and could have damaged the surrounding environment. The boat launch where it happened remained closed to the public until Tuesday afternoon.

Russian oligarch's yacht is costing U.S. taxpayers close to $1 million a month
A mega-yacht seized by U.S. authorities from a Russian oligarch is costing the government nearly $1 million a month to maintain, according to new court filings.
- The Justice Department is seeking permission to sell Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov.
- Attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.
The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking permission to sell a 348-foot yacht called Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov. The government said it wants to sell the $230 million yacht due to the "excessive costs" of maintenance and crew, which it said could total $922,000 a month.
"It is excessive for taxpayers to pay nearly a million dollars per month to maintain the Amadea when these expenses could be reduced to zero through [a] sale," according to a court filing by U.S. prosecutors on Friday.
The monthly charges for Amadea, which is now docked in San Diego, California, include $600,000 per month in running costs: $360,000 for the crew; $75,000 for fuel; and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food and other expenses. They also include $144,000 in monthly pro-rata insurance costs and special charges including dry-docking fees, at $178,000, bringing the total to $922,000, according to the filings.

The battle over Amadea and the costs to the government highlight the financial and legal challenges of seizing and selling assets owned by Russian oligarchs after the country's invasion of Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last week that the European Union should use profits from more than $200 billion of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's war effort.
Her comments echoed government calls in the spring of 2022 to freeze the yachts, private jets and mansions of Russian billionaires in hopes of putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and raising money for the war effort.
Yet, nearly two years later, the legal process for proving ownership of the Russian assets and selling them has proven to be far more time-consuming and costly. In London, Russian billionaire Eugene Shvidler has waged a court battle over his private jets that were impounded, and Sergei Naumenko has been appealing the detention of his superyacht Phi.
The battle over Amadea began in April 2022, when it was seized in Fiji at the request of the U.S. government, according to the court filings.
Though the U.S. alleges that the yacht is owned by Kerimov, who made his fortune in mining, attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.
In court filings, Khudainatov's attorneys have objected to the U.S. government's efforts to sell the yacht, saying a rushed sale could lead to a distressed sale price and that the maintenance costs are minor relative to the potential sale value.
Khudainatov's attorneys refuse to pay the ongoing maintenance costs as long as the government pursues a sale and forfeiture. However, they say their client will reimburse the U.S. government for the more than $20 million already spent to maintain the yacht if it's returned to its proper owner.
In court papers, the government says Kerimov disguised his ownership of Amadea through a series of shell companies and other owners. They say emails between crew members show Kerimov "was the beneficial owner of the yacht, irrespective of the titleholder of the vessel."
The emails show that Kerimov and his family ordered several interior improvements of the yacht, including a new pizza oven and spa, and that between 2021 and 2022, when the boat was seized, "there were no guest trips on the Amadea that did not include either Kerimov or his family members," according to the court filings.
The government also says Kerimov has been trying to sell Amadea for years, so a sale would be in keeping with his intent.
"This is not a situation in which a court would be ordering sale of a precious heirloom that a claimant desperately wishes to keep for sentimental reasons," the government said in filings.
Even if Amadea were sold quickly, the proceeds wouldn't automatically go to the government. Under law, the money would be held while Khudainatov and the government continue their battle in court over the ownership and forfeiture. Don't miss these stories from CNBC PRO:

Virginia Beach yacht, 75-foot, catches fire, 3 people on board rescued in dramatic fashion
The yacht was towed by the virginia beach fire department, assisting the coast guard, to fort story, a military base on virginia beach..
A 75-foot-yacht off the coast of Cape Henry in Virginia Beach caught fire, forcing its occupants to jump into the water, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
Mayday call for "a recreational vessel on fire" came in around 3:30 a.m. Friday, a spokesperson of the U.S. Coast Guard told USA TODAY over the phone.
Motor Vessel Savage, a 75-foot-yacht, was on fire about two miles off the coast of Cape Henry.
Three adults who were on board the vessel jumped into the water and were later rescued by a pilot boat, said U.S.C.G.

"All three were picked up within approximately 10 minutes by pilot boats and no injuries are recorded," said the U.S.C.G.
The Virginia Beach Fire Department, assisting the Coast Guard, towed the boat to Fort Story, a military base on Virginia Beach, where it is still smoldering.
The fire department is fighting the fire from the shore, said the spokesperson, adding that the vessel is against a rock. The U.S.C.G. is also monitoring the situation, with a boat on scene.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, said the U.S.C.G.

Boat Ramp Blunder Leads To an Underwater Tesla Fire
A nti-EV critics are quick to drop terminology like “thermal runaway” to make their points. It’s a tired complaint today. However, every once in a while an eye-opening example reminds us that EVs , not unlike ICE cars, still pose a fire risk. Such is the case of an underwater Tesla fire following a boat launch incident.
In a boat launch gone wrong, a Tesla fire rages in the water
You’ve likely seen videos of torquey electric cars towing trailers. It’s no strange thing; Tesla will sell you a towing package for a Model Y . However, towing is a tricky task for most drivers. Boat launches, that much more so.
For those who don’t know, launching a boat from a trailer requires backing it up into the water. Once the boat achieves buoyancy, the operator can guide the vessel. It’s a scary practice for inexperienced boaters, as a mistake could result in a water-damaged tow vehicle.
For one Tesla driver, a mishap at a boat launch resulted in their Tesla taking “submarine mode” a bit too seriously. Check out the video below to see the smoldering Tesla EV burn underwater.
Tragically, the submerging incident resulted in a Tesla fire. However, it’s not the spontaneous blazes you’ve heard mentioned in counter-EV arguments. No, this was a Tesla on fire while submerged in the water.
It’s an eye-opening event. Doctrine for many fire departments involves attacking an EV fire with mass quantities of water. Really, just overcome the fire’s thermal units (BTUs) with a wall of water. However, thermal runaway cases may require continued fire suppression to extinguish the battery pack. Still, it’s not every day that you see a Tesla fire, or any other sort of fire, that is, continue to burn in a body of water.

Laughter turns to screams after man dives into water, gets blindsided, share this article.
A tourist in Puerto Rico dove into the water to cool off and was blindsided by what shot out at him from behind like a torpedo in a moment of terror off Cayo Icacos Island.
Laughter turned into loud screams as witnesses for an instant probably thought a shark was attacking him.
Maggie Clark was videotaping him and reported on TikTok that it was a barracuda, and that it did not injure the man only bumped him.

“I would have had a heart attack,” one commenter wrote.
“This is all so hilarious and scary at the same time,” another wrote. “The fact it didn’t bite him makes me lol.”
As soon as the barracuda made a U-turn and all breathed normally again, the laughter surely returned.
“No barracudas were harmed in the making of this video,” Clark wrote.

A Los Angeles County Fire Department lifeguard boat was saved from capsizing after it hit a rock near the LA Harbor in San Pedro on Tuesday.
Firefighters were dispatched to the area, near the 1000 block of S. Seaside Avenue, at around 7:40 p.m. after learning that the Baywatch lifeguard boat was taking on water, according to Los Angeles Fire Department.
At around 9:15 p.m., crews reported that they had safely removed the water on the boat and saved it from sinking.
With SkyCal overhead, crews could be seen setting up pumps to help with dewatering the 30-to-40-foot vessel.
No injuries have been reported.
