Location and the novelty of staying on a cruise liner

Overall, this was fine accommodation for London with good access to the metro system and numerous restaurants. It's located in a fun area and staying on a boat is always a unique experience. We liked waking up and looking out our window to see the people kayaking and swimming in the river.

london superyacht hotel

room was fantastic, room was very hot even with the AC on full, however it was very hot outside that weekend. breakfast was fantastic, views off the rear of the boat were lovely especially sipping a nice cold beer whilst watching the watersports.

The breakfast was a nice touch. The rooms were quiet. Overall, it was a fun experience, but I would not probably book it again just because it felt a little confining with no window to open, and the rooms were only accessible by elevator.

Great location!

How guest reviews work

Each review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

An accommodation can reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.

Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Guidelines and Standards for Reviews

These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Sunborn London

Docklands, London, England, United Kingdom

  • Full Review
  • A floating super yacht hotel with serious novelty factor
  • Moored right opposite Excel conference center
  • Minutes' walk from DLR train station
  • Easy access to London's City Airport
  • Relatively spacious rooms, most with water views
  • In-room Lavazza coffeemakers and Sony tablets
  • Restaurant and terrace bar with water views
  • Far from tourist center
  • No fitness facilities

Bottom Line

The 136-room Sunborn London is an upper-mid-range hotel in the form of a 394-foot super yacht moored in London's Royal Victoria Dock. Rooms are pleasant, surprisingly spacious, and most have views over the water, though decor is more cruise liner than luxury yacht. Some rooms have spacious decks and big soaking tubs; all have coffeemakers, minibars, and flat-screen TVs. Eating and drinking options are solid though lack of fitness facilities feels like an oversight. Overall, for maritime enthusiasts with business in the area it's perfect, but tourists wanting to explore the capital's attractions should look elsewhere. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Oyster Hotel Review

An upper-mid-range floating hotel set on a super yacht .

london superyacht hotel

The Sunborn London is not only the capital's only floating hotel, it's the only one occupying a 394-foot super yacht. Built without an engine, however, it was towed from its native Finland and opened as upper-mid-range water-based lodgings in 2014. From the outside -- with its sleek marine lines -- it looks every inch the luxury vessel. Inside , however, the look and feel is deliberately more traditional, with polished brass railings, teakwood paneling, and the occasional nautical touches across all five of its floors. The resulting vibe is certainly more cruise ship (albeit an attractive one) than billionaire's playground. There's plenty of outside space on deck for enjoying the surrounding docks -- if not the most attractive of views -- accompanied by the sound of planes taking of and landing at the nearby City Airport. A solid pick for the novelty factor and for guests with business at the nearby conference center, this hotel is a bit far from main tourist attractions.

Moored in Royal Victoria Dock to the east of London's Canary Wharf

The hotel is permanently moored in the London ’s Royal Victoria Dock in the Docklands area in the east of the capital. The city's largest conference and events venue -- the Excel Center -- is located right opposite while the DLR (Dockland's Light Railway) station of Custom House is just minutes away on foot. From here it's just about 15 minutes by train to London's business district of Canary Wharf. While it's not ideally located for tourists, public transport links to the city center in around half an hour. City Airport however is right nearby and takes less than 10 minutes by car.

Relatively spacious rooms with Sony tablets and Lavazza coffeemakers

london superyacht hotel

The hotel's 136 rooms are certainly a lot larger than your average cruise ship cabins, but all follow cruise liner styling with plenty of polished teak, brass trim, and maritime touches. Unlike a cruise ship, all rooms are outward facing and most have large picture windows overlooking the water (some have small furnished balconies too). Amenities include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs plus sitting areas, and a Sony tablet for web browsing and ordering room service. Lavazza coffeemakers and minibars with free water also come standard. Clean, well-maintained bathrooms provide wall-mounted hairdryers, walk-in showers, and Molton Brown products. The top-end Yacht Executive Suite we saw had its own private sauna and large balcony.

Restaurant and terrace with water views, free Wi-Fi, and a small spa with massage treatments

london superyacht hotel

The hotel's Lands End restaurant provides a pleasant space awash with mirrored glass and teak paneling with large windows overlooking the water. A la carte and set breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus are served with British, Asian, and Mediterranean influences. The adjoining bar provides house cocktails, snacks, and meals as well as an outdoor terrace with views of Canary Wharf and the O2 arena. A small spa also provides a range of massage treatments though there are no fitness facilities on-site. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

YACHT HOTELS

Floating property development, pioneer of the yacht hotel.

Sunborn has developed an innovative solution to realise the potential of unused water space in city harbours and prestigious waterfront locations.

With two decades of experience and over €200m invested, we’re expanding to North America and other international locations – with a proven concept and successful track record designing, custom-building and operating luxury floating hotels, with exclusive accommodation and unique event facilities.

With high potential for future international growth, Sunborn has become the market leader in the floating hospitality sector and is well positioned to succeed.

Our knowledge and experience of waterfront and harbour development is long established and highly specialised – extending to land integration and all areas of water development, including marine construction, access structures, long term maintenance and international relocation of yacht hotels and floating real estate.

Floating structures can be built anywhere in the world and transported to a final location. They also have the advantage of leaving no environmental footprint after removal.

Working with world-leading green technology partners, we also offer a sustainable, carbon zero product with all new-build yacht hotels and floating structures. In addition, we’re retrofitting our existing yacht hotel fleet and are committed to achieve a carbon zero property portfolio by 2025.

Sunborn London | Superyacht I

In 2003 we developed and opened our first international yacht hotel – Sunborn London. Overnight we brought to market a completely new and original hotel concept, a property which became a well known landmark building in London.

Offering a unique experience to business and leisure guests, the success of the first Sunborn London proved the concept worked as a stand alone hotel and was the first time in the world that a fully operational hotel building was relocated to another country.

london superyacht hotel

Sunborn London | Superyacht II

The first Sunborn London was a ground-breaking hotel and proof of concept. After its success we upgraded the hotel in 2014 to a larger, 2nd generation yacht hotel, with 138 guest rooms, improved operational facilities and larger hospitality and events spaces.

With the new Sunborn London we also signed our first long-term lease with an operational partner. Operated under the Sunborn Yacht Hotels brand the new hotel has been a major commercial success, with above market revenues and occupancy rates.

Sunborn Gibraltar | Superyacht III

In 2014 we opened our first 5-star Grand Luxury floating resort – Sunborn Gibraltar, a third generation yacht hotel. The construction and opening of the ambitious new yacht hotel pushed boundaries and tested our company with it’s scale and sophistication.

With 18 500 m2 of floor place over 7 hotel floors and 189 guest rooms and suites, Sunborn Gibraltar features an impressive ballroom and conference deck, as well an exclusive spa and top floor sky restaurant, with extensive outdoor areas, pool and bars.

New hotel developments

Sunborn London | Superyacht IV

A key advantage of our yacht hotels is the ability to move, upgrade and expand hotels in the same waterfront location. In 2021 we received full planning permission for the new Sunborn London, our 4th generation yacht hotel.

Our biggest and most advanced yacht hotel to date, the newly constructed 134m vessel will expand the hotel operation to 225 guest rooms and feature a 200 seat restaurant, as well as more extensive leisure and event facilities. The new Sunborn London will also be a carbon zero yacht hotel, through its sustainable design and use energy efficient materials, smart glazing and thermal heat exchange systems.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS | NORTH AMERICA

Following the commercial success of our first yacht hotels we have now began a major international expansion – with 3 new superyacht hotel developments in North America.

Located in iconic waterfront locations, the new property developments are prominently positioned next to some of world’s most valuable real estate. With a proven concept and a wealth of specialist experience gained over many years we now have a highly scalable business – and the operational and technical knowledge to expand into new international markets and achieve a successful outcome.

Superyachts have become the world’s ultimate symbol of wealth and exclusivity.

Sunborn yacht hotels offer a unique hotel experience, onboard a luxury, purpose-built floating hotel.

With exclusive hotel accommodation, restaurants and event spaces, the concept combines the high value associated with luxury yachts and a modern, self-contained hotel.

CALIBRE

Floating Fancy: Sunborn London Yacht Hotel Review

Finding the perfect hotel for a London stay can be tricky, with countless options and locations available. Sunborn London offers something a little more unusual, as it’s not your standard bricks-and-mortar establishment; pick the Sunborn, and you’ll be staying on an extravagant yacht. But while it stands out from the crowd visually, does the rest stand up to scrutiny?

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel, to give it its full title, is located at Royal Victoria Dock, an area of east London that has undergone extensive regeneration and is home to the Excel exhibition centre. Despite its Docklands location, the Sunborn yacht is easy to get to, thanks to the new Elizabeth Line that runs through the city, with stops at Heathrow Airport, Paddington, Bond Street and Liverpool Street, to name just a few, where you can connect to most other London underground lines. Arriving by car isn’t too much of a chore either, and with ExCel next door, ample parking is available just a few minutes walk from the hotel.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel entrance

Arriving at Sunborn London certainly makes an impression. The vast open space in front of the floating hotel allows you to take in the size as you get closer to the riverfront. There’s a lift at dock level – one of few signs that the yacht was indeed built specifically for this purpose – which takes you directly to the stylishly designed reception level, where you are greeted by friendly staff, ready to check you in for a stay.

While the purpose-built yacht might not have sailed the Mediterranean, it still has all the features of a sea-going vessel, with heavy doors and raised sills. There’s even an impressive cruise ship-esque double staircase in the middle of the reception area, which is finished off with a crystal chandelier, adding a touch of elegance.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel: The Room

We spent the night in a mid-range ‘Yacht Executive’ room with a balcony overlooking the surprisingly blue waters of the docks. The room was spacious and comfortable, with a good-sized desk area should you combine business with pleasure. There were a good number of plug sockets dotted about the room and at each side of the bed – something often overlooked – with a mix of UK and European sockets, which was a nice touch. Everything you would expect was there, including tea and coffee making facilities, a fridge and a safe, should you need them.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel executive room

The bathroom was a reasonable size, with a spacious enough shower. Confusingly though, rather than having a simple shower control, there was a bath mixer tap with a shower attached. Once the water was turned on, a toggle needed to be pulled to direct the water through the shower head. With no bath in sight, this seemed rather odd.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel bathroom

Unlike the smaller rooms on the lower two levels, our room had floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water, with a double-glazed door leading out onto our little balcony, complete with two chairs. While it was a nice little bit of outside space, it wasn’t well designed in that once seated in the chairs, the view was of the solid steel safety barrier rather than the river. Perhaps some safety glass would be a better bet.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel executive room

Despite that, it felt like a well-thought-out space, with considerate touches ranging from the surfeit of power sockets to the welcome bottles of water. Between 19 and 23m3, the rooms aren’t huge on paper, but clever use of space and light makes them feel far more generous than they could.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel executive room

Throughout the cabins and the public areas of the yacht, there are lots of mirrors, reflective surfaces and warm coloured wooden panelling, which adds to the character of Sunborn London, and adds to the sense of space, leaving you in no doubt that you are onboard a vessel.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel: Lands End Restaurant

The onboard restaurant is located at the vessel’s rear, with an outside space providing views towards The O2 and Canary Wharf. Like the rest of the public areas, it is adorned with warm-coloured wood and reflective surfaces, making it feel both welcoming and light and airy.

Sunborn Yacht Lands End Restaurant

We began by perusing the wine list and decided on a bottle of prosecco – such glamorous surroundings deserved a few bubbles! The bottle arrived at the table, was opened and poured, only to find that it had been served at room temperature. Our waiter did try to rectify this error, but the second bottle had also not been chilled. A cold bottle was eventually found from the Sundown Bar on the deck below, but two bottles had been wasted by this stage. It’s an amateur mistake to make and set a low bar for the rest of the evening.

Nevertheless, we put this mishap to one side and checked out the food offering. The menu had a good selection of options, with meat and seafood dishes available. However, the choice for those following a vegetarian or vegan diet was very limited.

I selected the mixed marinated olives as my starter, and my dining companion opted for the Gazpacho. Both arrived quite quickly and were tasty and fresh.

london superyacht hotel

The main course was more of an issue, as I suffer from lactose intolerance. My only option was wild mushroom risotto with vegan cheese and grated truffle, with a seasonal house salad on the side. My companion had more choice and opted for the ‘Sunborn’ fish ‘n’ chips, which consisted of beer battered haddock, pea puree and chunky chips.

When the food did arrive at the table, it looked well presented, and while the fish fillet did look relatively small, the risotto was somewhat more substantial.

The wild mushroom risotto was well cooked, the risotto rice was tender, and the dish was well seasoned and tasty. The side salad, however, did leave a little to be desired. There was little or no dressing to add flavour, which was disappointing.

The fish and chips were fine, if unexciting. It’s a dish that’s difficult to get wrong but also difficult to impress with. The kitchen managed to stay in its lane, offering something perfectly acceptable, with fresh chips and tasty mushy peas, although portions were a little meagre.

london superyacht hotel

Dessert was again lacking in options for my needs or those on plant-based diets, with fruit and sorbet being the only, somewhat unimaginative, options. I reluctantly opted for the three flavours of sorbet, while my dining companion opted for the much tastier sounding Bakewell tart with ice cream.

london superyacht hotel

The Bakewell tart arrived without a hitch, but the lack of attention to the order in the kitchen meant that I was served two scoops of sorbet and one scoop of ice cream instead of three of sorbet. Luckily I noticed before I started to eat it, and I immediately notified the manager of the error. My issue is an intolerance rather than an allergy, but had it not been, this could have been a more significant problem.

With few guests in the restaurant the night we dined, there was little excuse for the multiple errors. While a long way from fine dining , the food was perfectly acceptable, but the lack of imagination in the menu and the lack of care in serving the drinks and meal tarnished the experience.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel: Sundown Bar

After dinner, we headed down a deck for a nightcap at the Sundown Bar. As you enter the bar, lights and reflective surfaces surround you from every angle, making it just a little overwhelming against the dusk outside. We decided the sensory overload was a little too much, so we chose a seat on the outside deck with views along the docks to The O2 beyond.

Sunborn Yacht Sundown Bar

The overall environment and vibe of the place were pleasant and lively, with most patrons spending their time either gazing into each other’s eyes or gazing at the myriad lights of the city twinkling away in the distance. A surprising amount of time can be wasted simply watching the Emirates Air Line cable cars crossing the river, their red lights floating across the skyline in contrast to the blue and white lights of the city.

london superyacht hotel

There is a good selection of drinks available, but they are a little pricey, even allowing for London prices. A Diet Coke and a double Woodford Reserve bourbon came in at £20. The service was swift and friendly, recovering from the faux pas at dinner and rounding off our evening well.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel: Breakfast

Breakfast the following day was on the outside deck of the Lands End restaurant and consisted of a cooked breakfast from the kitchen alongside a self-service buffet. The mix of table service for the hot food and self-service for the rest isn’t that unusual, but it was also self-service for tea and coffee, which, for a luxury hotel , is much less common. Disappointingly, there was hardly any hot water left in the urn to make tea, and what was there was lukewarm at best.

The breakfast was perfectly adequate and served quickly, suggesting that it is precooked in the kitchen and then plated up when ordered. While that’s not a significant problem, it is disappointing to be served fried eggs that have been kept warm a little too long when a fresh egg takes only a minute or two to cook.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel Breakfast

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel: The Verdict

london superyacht hotel

With countless highly-rated dining options within just a few minutes’ walk from the Sunborn, it’s a surprise and disappointment that the restaurant can’t match the standards that the rest of the hotel sets. With those other options available, though, it’s not something that should put you off, as it’s the hotel that holds the appeal.

All aboard this luxury superyacht hotel in London, open for you to stay right now

Our plans to sail the French Riviera for the summer may have been somewhat derailed this year. But thankfully, it turns out we can live out our superyacht dreams closer to home – and we can book in to stay, right now.

The luxury Sunborn Yacht Hotel, London is a floating hotel – so it’s also the perfect option for those who would rather avoid any choppy waters. Seasickness is so passé.

london superyacht hotel

Moored at the Royal Victoria Docks, by the ExCel centre, the Sunborn London Yacht Hotel is the city’s only superyacht hotel, and one of the most unique luxury experiences in London. The yacht hotel had its grand reopening this weekend, as the UK hospitality industry opens back up.

Each room and suite of the 136-room floating hotel boasts beautiful river or dock views, while the plush Yacht Executive Rooms have their own private terrace or balcony, too. Every room is stocked with high-end Prija toiletries, and offers a new in-room dining experience, with an extended menu, Grab & Go wrapped breakfast items and snacks – all ordered through the rooms’ tablet.

london superyacht hotel

Along with the stays at the hotel beginning again, comes the reopening of the yacht’s gorgeous Sundown bar: arguably the most elegant place in Canary Wharf to enjoy an aperitif. The third-deck dining venue offers panoramic views across the water, exclusive wines and spirits from high-end distilleries, and a sumptuous menu of bar bites, too. Guests must pre-book their place in order to regulate numbers, while seating at the restaurant and bar have been adjusted to safely social distance, too.

london superyacht hotel

The hotel’s Land’s End restaurant is also back open for bookings. The high-end restaurant promises to take your tastebuds on a ‘voyage of discovery’ with a refined menu of European and Asian fusion, a sumptuous setting and enviable views.

For its reopening, the hotel has had a deep, hospital grade sanitisation of all rooms and public spaces. It’s had months to learn and perfect its safety measures: during lockdown, rather than closing its doors, the hotel acted as a place for NHS staff at the nearby Nightingale Hospital to stay, and served breakfast and dinner in the yacht’s Land’s End restaurant.

london superyacht hotel

More of the new precautions on board to protect guest and staff wellbeing are a digital system for checking in and out, protective screens on reception and sanitiser stations every 2 metres.

We thought we wouldn’t be back on the water for a while – but a luxury superyacht break in the capital has sailed to number one in our staycation wishlist.

Sunborn London offers nightly rates from £109 In a Classic Room. Booking details at sunbornhotels.com/london

Sunborn London - 394ft Superyacht Converted Into A Hotel

Who can afford the ₤150,000-a-week it costs to charter a superyacht? Not many. But thanks to the Sunborn London you can still experience the life of a sexy sea-dog. It is a 394ft superyacht that has been converted into a luxury hotel.

Permanently moored at Royal Victoria Dock, the financial center of Canary Wharf and the City are in easy access as if the celebrated O2 centre which hosts the biggest concerts and exhibitions. There are 138 rooms starting at a relatively modest ₤180 per night ($305) that go all the way up to a royal suite that has a sauna, sunken Jacuzzi, and a 100sq ft private terrace. There are two restaurants one for fine dining and one for a more casual experience.

The London Sunborn yacht is set to stay in London for many years to come but there’s nothing to stop it weighing anchor and setting sail if London suddenly hits financial hardship… or if stolen by pirates.

Discover the best boat hotels in London with this handy guide. Here’s our pick of the best.

With the Thames running through London, along with a plethora of canals and marinas in the city, having a break on a boat hotel (or boatel?) is easier than you think.

From mega millionaire yachts to boutique barges, this is your one-stop shop for finding the best floating hotels in London.

Good Hotel London

The Good Hotel sits in the Royal Victoria Dock area of London’s Docklands. We love that this is a hotel with a social conscience – the not-for-profit basis of the hotel sees all profits reinvested to help underprivileged people, from sending children to school to offering adults the chance to retrain in hospitality.

Rooms at this hotel are designed to maximise space in the most stylish of ways. Utilising Dutch design, the ensuite bathrooms have outstanding rain showers and locally-sourced toiletries.

And best of all? Each night you stay, a disadvantaged child can go to school for a week.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel

Moored in Royal Victoria Dock, in the heart of East London’s affluent Docklands area, the Sunborn Hotel is a minute’s walk from ExCeL London. This superyacht is highly luxurious, with crystal chandeliers, an opulent lobby, stunning dining areas and much more.

There is a sun deck where you can take drinks and sit back to soak up the rays, with the bar selling a terrific selection of beers, wines and spirits. Meanwhile, their breakfast buffet comes highly rated.

The best part of the Sunborn Yacht is unquestionably the accommodation. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, air conditioning and an excellent power shower, while some rooms even boast stunning views across the Royal Docks.

The Boathouse

The Boathouse

The Boathouse is a wood-panelled houseboat moored in the Paddington Basin, where the Regent’s Canal meets the Grand Union. Not too far from Little Venice , and with all the charming waterside bars, restaurants and beauty of the Paddington Basin, this is one of London’s premier floating holiday accommodations.

Although we’d recommend this boat for romantic breaks, there’s space for up to four people. Guests can use the whole boat, including a gorgeous bathroom with a bath and shower space.

The living quarters are super comfortable, and the kitchen is well-equipped. Best of all, the rooftop deck from which you can marvel at a beautiful London sunset for those summer months.

St Katharine Docks 2Boats

St Katherine Docks 2Boats

St Katharine Docks in Wapping is home to Sea Dancer, a yacht that sleeps four and includes a microwave, hot drink-making tools and a fridge for the whole self-catering waterborne experience.

On the boat is a work desk, a stove, flat-screen TV and even an outdoor dining area, step foot on land and you’ll be greeted by plenty of bars, restaurants and cafes to choose from.

Absolute Pleasure Yacht

Absolute Pleasure Yacht

Moored in West India Quay, the Absolute Pleasure Yacht gives guests a taste of the millionaire yacht-living lifestyle at a fraction of the price. Although it’s primarily a function space that hosts corporate and private parties, you can also hire the yacht for a break, which includes everything you’d expect from a top-draw London hotel.

Ten luxury bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs and luxe linen. Bottled water, toiletries and bathrobes are all included, while the yacht is moored close to a range of stunning bars, restaurants and a cool pop-up food market on Thursdays and Fridays.

Boutique Barges

Boutique Barges

Boutique Barges have three narrow boats moored on the Thames, offering holidaymakers and visitors to London an authentic riverside experience.

Barbara is a stunning boat with a log-fired stove and bathroom complete with a shower, as well as a small double master bedroom, and is situated in Central London.

Meanwhile, Big Boat is more comprehensive but shorter than Barbara and comes with a raised master double bed that we love, making it the perfect accommodation for a romantic couple’s break. Outside is space for a fire pit and a couple of deckchairs, ideal for watching the sun go down with a glass of bubbly.

Finally, Velvet Morning is another narrow boat that has been gorgeously designed and is moored in Central London. We’d say this was our favourite, thanks to the crisp and stylish decor.

Tulana Taggs

Tulana Taggs

This floating holiday home is one of our favourites. Mainly because it offers something a little bit different to the others we’ve mentioned.

Situated in the inner lagoon of Taggs Island near Hampton Court Palace and Bushy Park is a stunning oasis of calm where you can leave the stresses and strains of the 21st Century behind you.

Cross the bridge onto Taggs Island and enjoy this stunning floating home amongst the reeds of the lagoon. Tulana Taggs combines gorgeous Art Deco and period furnishings with the mod cons of a Sky Glass Smart TV, a four-poster Super King bed, a freestanding nickel bath and for a little extra, a Swedish wood-fired hot tub – just a stunning floating holiday home experience.

Practical Tips to Consider Before Booking Your London Yacht Hotel

  • These boat hotels are dotted around London, many of which have limited parking. Check before you book whether you need to travel to the boat via public transport or whether you can park at the hotel.
  • If you’re staying on a houseboat, check the house rules before you visit to ensure you know what is expected of you as guests.

Other facilities offered at the property include a ticket service, a tour desk. The lounge bar serves a selection of beers, wines, ciders and spirits. All aboard the Sunborn Yacht Hotel London

  • Stef Bottinelli

With beautiful cabins, stunning views and delicious food, the superyacht moored by the Excel in East London is not just a four star hotel, but a veritable experience.

Moored by the Royal Victoria Dock, right next to the Excel, Sunborn Yacht London is the only first floating hotel in the capital.

The superyacht arrived in the UK in April 2014 and opened to guests in the autumn of the same year. It’s been very popular ever since, thanks to its beauty, interesting concept, proximity to the Excel and the city and the fact that it has a marriage licence.

The 128 metre-long, five storey craft boasts 136 roomy and elegant cabins and suites, spectacular views of Canary Wharf and central London, fine dining in the form of the Lands End Restaurant, the Sundown Bar, meeting and conference rooms, an auditorium and for those in need of pampering, even an Elemis SPA.

With its grand central staircase, spectacular crystal chandelier, teak wood panelling and brass railings, staying at the Sunborn feels like being on a luxurious cruise ship (albeit one that doesn’t sail, as this yacht does not have an engine). And with kingsize room prices starting at just under £140 per night, this is a cruise that won’t break the bank and it’s certainly cheaper than buying your own yacht or chartering one.

We visited Sunborn London on a splendid autumnal Sunday. We were immediately impressed by our spacious and stylish room (a term preferred by the management rather than cabin, which conjures up a cramped space), all wood and clean lines with  a comfortable double bed, sitting room area, an all white bathroom stocked with Molton Brown products, mini bar, tea and coffee facilities, a large TV, free WIFI, a tablet and stunning views across the Thames.

After settling in, we headed for the Sundown Bar, and enjoyed a glass of wine on deck, watching the sun setting over the London skyline – a very relaxing way to spend the end of the weekend.

Post  aperitif  we headed upstairs to the Lands End Restaurant, were dinner was fine indeed. The menu has a modern British/European feel and is well thought out, with simple, classic and delicious dishes. Starters include mouthwatering scallops with spring onion, pea purée, soft shell crab (£13), octopus tranche, red pepper & onion confit, avocado, lime & chilli (£11.00) and chicken and leek mousse and Shimeji mushroom & honey roast ham, chive beurre blanc (£11.00). Mains feature duck leg confit, celery root, roasted plum, watercress soubise (£22.00), sea bass, fennel textures, Polonaise sauce (£21.00) and pickled & slow braised pork belly, buttered savoy cabbage, carrot purée, beetroot with cider jus (£20.00). Vegetarians are well catered for too with at least two imaginative and tasty options per course, such as an entrée of cauliflower and ginger pudding, spinach shortbread, Parmesan foam (£10.00) and mains of vegetable roulade, spinach, goat cheese with tomato fondue (£18.00) and gnocchi, Stilton cheese, roasted almonds and herbs (£16.00).

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel doesn’t just offer a luxurious stay, but a real experience. Its proximity to the Excel and the city and its connections to central London by public transports or boat, make it an excellent alternative to standard accommodation, whether you are in the capital for pleasure or for business, or simply want to spend a relaxing weekend pretending you are indeed chartering a yacht, sailing away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Mandarin Oriental

When I first started visiting London on a regular basis, sleeping arrangements consisted of friends’ sofas and shared beds. 12 years later, with a decade of travel writing under my belt, my trips across the pond are now usually bookended by overnight stays in some of the most reputable hotels in Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Covent Garden, and beyond.

Given my profession and familiarity with the city, I’m often asked for recommendations about where to stay. While the exact answer will change based on the desired budget and neighborhood, I’ve found that the best hotels fall into one of two categories: they’re either London institutions, like The Savoy or Claridge’s, or they’re newer properties using innovative design and a more modern approach for a different but equally as enjoyable experience.

No matter how long they’ve been around, the city’s top-tier hotels rarely rely on reputation alone to keep them on “best of” lists. Instead, they’re constantly innovating, renovating, and striving to achieve an inimitable level of perfection — one that will allow them to compete with the other award-winning hotels in their bracket. We’ve rounded up this list of the best of the best based on a combination of our firsthand experience at editor-loved properties and past and present winners of T+L’s World’s Best and It List awards. Read on to discover the best hotels in London of 2024.

The Savoy’s location on the River Thames grants guests unbeatable views of the London Eye and the passing water traffic.

The fitness facilities feel a bit cramped when more than three or four guests are using them.

There are London hotels — and then there are British icons. Admittedly, I wasn’t the most familiar with The Savoy’s history and prestige before my stay in January 2024, but the service, attention to detail, and river views won me over within minutes of stepping foot inside. While it’s certainly a stalwart character in the city’s hotel scene, The Savoy — which received high marks in the 2023 World’s Best Awards — still feels relevant and exciting. It has a compelling identity that stems, in part, from the addition of Gordon Ramsay’s on-site restaurant, the Savoy Grill; partnerships with Gucci; and unexpectedly modern amenities, like an indoor pool and Dyson hair dryers.

The larger hotel story, though, wouldn’t be complete without noting The American Bar (the “longest surviving cocktail bar in London”) and the famous Red Lift. After I checked in, the bellman took me to my fourth-floor room via this little slice of history, otherwise known as London's first electric elevator.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: Northbank of the Thames; equidistant from the City of London, Knightsbridge, and Mayfair
  • Distance from Airport: 16 miles from LHR
  • Nearby Attractions: Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden Market, St. James’s Park
  • Accessibility: The hotel has six fully accessible rooms, and the restaurants and bars are wheelchair accessible. Elevators are also located in the Front Hall and in each of the hotel’s wings (West and East); the Thames Foyer, Beaufort Bar, and The River Restaurant can also be accessed via elevator.
  • Rates: From $737 per night
  • Parking: Valet parking, £60.00 (around $75) per day

Brown’s Hotel

Brown's Hotel

Even with its storied history and luxury accommodations, there’s still a welcome sense of informality within the common spaces; guests can even bring their dogs.

For a true luxury experience, you’ll need to upgrade to one of the suites.

The title of London’s oldest hotel typically goes to Brown’s Hotel, a distinguished member of the Rocco Forte hospitality group with roots dating back to 1832. Tucked away on Albemarle Street, just off bustling Piccadilly, it’s a type of property that takes you by surprise — in the best way possible. It almost feels like a secret club, one you can access with a room card or a reservation for dinner at Charlie’s, a table at Donovan Bar, or afternoon tea in The Drawing Room.

One of the hotel’s features that immediately won me over was the lobby; sophisticated, yes, but also warm, charming, and ever-so-photogenic (thanks to Olga Polizzi’s creative lead and hand-painted wisteria wallpaper). During your stay, you’ll probably hear whispers of the hotel’s association with larger-than-life names; past guests include literary figures like Stephen King, Mark Twain, Agatha Christie, and Rudyard Kipling. It’s this sense of wonder — and five-star features like a spa, 24-hour in-room dining, and a fitness room — that earned Brown’s Hotel a spot in the 2021 and 2023 World’s Best Awards.

  • Neighborhood: Mayfair
  • Distance from Airport: 15 miles from LHR
  • Nearby Attractions: Green Park, Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus
  • Accessibility: The hotel can accommodate travelers with disabilities via a portable ramp at the entrance, wheelchair-height tables, and elevators; there are also two guest rooms with fully accessible bathrooms. It’s important to note, however, that there’s a 6-inch step into the property and steps to the check-in area.
  • Rates: From $829 per night
  • Parking: Valet parking, £50 per day (around $63)

“Tucked into London's buzzy Mayfair neighborhood steps from some of the city's best shopping, Brown's Hotel is an iconic property with a long and storied history. I loved how close the hotel was to many of London's top tourist attractions while still feeling discreet and intimate.”

Shangri-La The Shard

Shangri-La the Shard, London

It’s home to London's highest hotel infinity pool.

Travelers who are averse to heights may not enjoy the panoramic views.

If you’re searching for an elevated (in every sense of the word) London experience, there’s only one hotel to book: Shangri-La The Shard. Taking home honors in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 World’s Best Awards, the 202-room hotel is known for its location within The Shard — the pyramid-shaped, 72-story building on the Thames — but I found that its impressive address is only the beginning of a thoroughly unforgettable stay.

The hotel itself starts on the 34th floor, occupying 18 total floors, and guests have access to four separate dining destinations: TĪNG, GŎNG Bar, BAR 31, and the Sky Lounge. While you may not want to leave your well-appointed guest room with its floor-to-ceiling windows and heated bathroom floors, you’d be remiss not to experience my favorite part of the hotel: the Infinity Sky Pool (just be sure to book your time slot in advance).

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: Southwark
  • Distance from Airport: 19 miles from LHR
  • Nearby Attractions: Tate Modern, Borough Market, St. Paul’s Cathedral
  • Accessibility: The property notes its facilities have “accessible access,” and past guests share that it’s extremely wheelchair-friendly.
  • Rates: From $625 per night
  • Parking: Valet parking is available for £55 per day (around $70)

Claridge's

For a particularly glamorous weekend, book a treatment at the spa; designed by André Fu, the restorative space is inspired by Japanese temples and Kyoto’s Zen gardens.

You’ll have to pay a pretty penny to experience this level of luxury.

Claridge’s is synonymous with glamor and an unwavering commitment to hotel excellence, as I can attest following a visit to the London property in late 2021. While the five-star hotel recently appeared in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 World’s Best Awards, it’s been welcoming guests since 1856. Over the years, famous names like Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Bing Crosby, Jackie Onassis, and Diane von Furstenberg have spent time within its walls.

The fluttering Union Jack flags are the first sign you’ve arrived at the destination — in case you don’t recognize the building's iconic Art Deco architecture — and from there, you’ll repeatedly be impressed (perhaps even blown away) by the design and amenities. Sipping a cocktail or two in Claridge’s Bar, The Fumoir, or The Painter's Room is the perfect way to celebrate your London trip, and the traditional afternoon tea in The Foyer & Reading Room, complete with sweet and savory British delicacies, is certainly one of the property’s most famous highlights.

  • Nearby Attractions: Oxford Circus, Green Park, Hyde Park
  • Accessibility: The property notes it is “fully accessible for guests with disabilities,” but travelers with specific questions are welcome to reach out to the team before their stay.
  • Rates: From $938 per night
  • Parking: Available at the neighboring Parkbee Care Park

Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts

Sit down to a Michelin-starred meal from Chef Yannick Alléno at Pavyllon London.

It doesn’t have as extensive of a history as hotels like Claridge’s and The Savoy.

Like any Four Seasons property, the Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane is defined by a certain level of splendor. Featured in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 World’s Best Awards, the 196-room, dog-friendly Mayfair hotel boasts all of the bells and whistles — including a Bentley house car (which offers complimentary service within a two-mile radius), a rooftop Forbes Five-Star spa, an in-house florist, and an extra-large dose of British charm.

Given its prestigious Park Lane address, you can also expect the rooms and amenities to bat well above average. Take the 42 bespoke suites, for example; this room level comes with a fireplace, terrace, and incredible London views. When it’s mealtime, pop into Pavyllon London or request in-room dining; and if you want to get some early morning steps in, choose between neighboring Hyde Park or Green Park.

  • Nearby Attractions: Hyde Park, Wellington Arch, Buckingham Palace
  • Accessibility: The hotel offers wheelchair-equipped rooms as well as flashlights and visually-impaired and hearing-impaired kits upon request.
  • Rates: From $918 per night
  • Parking: Valet parking, available for £55 per day (around $70)

Kimpton Fitzroy London

Its nightly rates are on the more affordable end of the luxury hotel spectrum.

Standard guest rooms tend to run small.

Like many aspects of “The Big Smoke,” the Kimpton Fitzroy London (featured in the 2022 and 2023 World’s Best Awards) keeps one foot planted in the past and the other facing ahead, embracing modern amenities and luxury touches.

Upon arrival — or even just passing by the Russell Square hotel — you’re immediately drawn to the detailed, terracotta facade guarded by four British queens. The interiors are equally impressive, combining some of the building’s original details with modern design direction from Tara Bernerd & Partners and Russell Sage Studio. On top of 334 guest rooms, there are four drinking and dining spots, including Fitz’s, a glamorous cocktail bar named after the original architect of Kimpton Fitzroy London, Charles Fitzroy Doll. And if you have to send a few emails? Head to the on-site coffee shop, Burr & Co, where you’ll find an assortment of caffeinated drinks, baked goods, and strong Wifi.

  • Neighborhood: Bloomsbury
  • Distance from Airport: 17 miles from LHR
  • Nearby Attractions: Kings Cross, Charles Dickens Museum, The British Library
  • Accessibility: The hotel notes that it accommodates all disabilities; rooms, restrooms, showers, baths, restaurants, an exercise facility, and public spaces are all accessible. Communication features, closed captioning, and decoders are also available.
  • Rates: From $277 per night
  • Parking: No on-site parking; guests are directed to car parks by Bloomsbury Square and Brunswick Square.

Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park

Its location puts you within walking distance of some of the top tourist attractions and Royal Family residences — including Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace.

It's located in a relatively busy area of London.

If you’re seeking glitz and glamor, look no further than the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, a five-star hotel that earned top-ranking spots in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 World’s Best Awards. The Knightsbridge property stacks up nicely among its competition, with 168 rooms, 25 suites, a spa, bar, indoor swimming pool, three restaurants, and one cocktail bar.

Its stellar location, however, is what really sets it apart — especially for those travelers who want to take advantage of London’s world-class shopping. Directly outside the hotel, you’ll find the Knightsbridge underground station, allowing for easy access to the Piccadilly line, and iconic stores like Harrods and Harvey Nichols can be reached on foot. And if you’re fighting a bout of jet lag? Book a treatment at the spa, where you can also enjoy the steam room, sauna, and vitality pool.

  • Neighborhood: Knightsbridge
  • Distance from Airport: 13 miles from LHR
  • Nearby Attractions: Harrods, Sloane Street, Hyde Park
  • Accessibility: The hotel has accessible rooms with roll-in showers; the property’s restaurants are also wheelchair-accessible.
  • Wi-Fi: £15 per day (around $19)
  • Parking: Valet parking to a secure neighboring car park; may cost an undisclosed fee (although the hotel offers some rates with parking included )

Rosewood London

Rosewood London's Art Afternoon Tea service is a unique spin on the traditional, quintessentially British meal.

The property doesn’t display its accessibility features on the website; to request specific services and/or confirm room functionality, you’ll need to call ahead.

Housed inside a Grade II-listed building dating back to the early 1900s, Rosewood London is an art-filled sanctuary accented by bright, bold contemporary design. Its convenient location — not too far from Covent Garden — is part of the reason it made the World’s Best Awards list in 2021, 2022, and 2023, but the food and beverage program is equally appreciated by guests.

Cocktails in the legendary Scarfes Bar are a must, as is an elevated British meal in the Holborn Dining Room, a grab-and-go pie from The Pie Room, and the creative Art Afternoon Tea service. As far as rooms go, most guests are pleasantly surprised by the modern touches (like 24-hour in-room dining, 55-inch LED televisions, and Votary toiletries).

  • Neighborhood: Holborn
  • Nearby Attractions: Covent Garden Market, Royal Opera House, The British Museum
  • Accessibility: While not viewable on the website, there are accessible King Executive Rooms with roll-in showers.
  • Rates: From $626 per night

St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel

Marriott International

Also available to book at Expedia.com

Given its easy access to St. Pancras, King’s Cross, and Euston stations, it’s the perfect base camp for exploring London.

This hotel may be better suited to those passing through London on a stopover rather than those on a longer stay, as it’s located directly next to the train station (convenient for travelers hopping aboard the Eurostar).

The St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel impressed T+L readers so much that it earned a spot in the 2023 World’s Best Awards. The Gothic Revival-style building may be a Marriott-owned property these days, but when it originally opened in 1873, it was known as the Midland Grand Hotel.

In 2011, the hotel completed an extensive renovation, and rooms are now divided into two categories: the pricier historic suites in the Chambers Wing and the more affordable contemporary “signature suites” in the Barlow Wing. No matter which side of the hotel you choose to book, you’ll be able to access the spa, fitness center, and indoor pool.

  • Neighborhood: St. Pancras / Camden
  • Nearby Attractions: The British Library, The Harry Potter Shop at Platform 9 ¾, UCL Art Museum
  • Accessibility: The resort has a wide range of accessibility features, including accessible on-site parking, elevators, and accessible entrances to the pool, fitness center, spa, main lobby, meeting spaces, restaurants, and the rooms and suites. Guests can request rooms with self-closing doors, bathtub seats and grab rails, accessible vanities, adjustable height hand-held shower wands, and more.
  • Rates: From $418 per night
  • Parking: On-site parking, £20 per hour (around $25), or £80 per day (around $100)

The Connaught

The Connaught Hotel

It’s home to the first Aman spa outside of an Aman property.

Nightly rates are relatively steep.

Enjoying an extra-cold drink from the Martini Trolley at the Connaught Bar is a given when you’re staying at one of the nicest hotels in London, but The Connaught goes above and beyond amazing cocktails alone. The frequent World’s Best Award recipient — most recently in 2021, 2022, and 2023 — refuses to compromise on the details (both the big and small), including dependable service and a dedication to delivering a five-star experience. The result is a must-visit destination in one of Europe’s most exciting cities.

From the Aman Spa outfitted with a black granite swimming pool to a restaurant from famed French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, every inch of the Mayfair hotel exudes excellence.

  • Neighborhood : Mayfair
  • Nearby Attractions: Hyde Park, Grosvenor Square, Queen Mary’s Rose Gardens
  • Accessibility: The Connaught notes that while it’s fully accessible for guests with disabilities, visitors are encouraged to contact the property ahead of a visit to request specific features. Two of the suites, The Adams Suite and the Contemporary Studio, can also be made into accessible rooms upon request.
  • Rates: From $881 per night
  • Parking: Self-parking; the hotel shares that metered parking is available on Mount Street and Berkeley Square, and there’s a Q-Park on Park Lane.

The Goring is a favorite among the Royal Family; it even has a Royal Warrant for “hospitality services.”

The atmosphere can be a bit intimidating.

Ask any travel editor about the best hotels in London, and you can guarantee The Goring — a World’s Best Awards favorite in 2021, 2022, and 2023 — will be one of the first names out of their mouth. The family-owned hotel is British hospitality at its finest, hence the Royal Warrant, and there’s an element of authenticity throughout the six-floor property. In fact, each of the 69 rooms and suites is individually decorated by a British designer.

When you’re feeling peckish, the award-winning Afternoon Tea should do the trick — or wait to enjoy dinner in the Michelin-starred Dining Room. To round out your experience, meander over to neighboring Buckingham Palace, or bring your current read out into the private gardens.

  • Neighborhood: Belgravia
  • Nearby Attractions: Westminster Cathedral, St. James’s Park, Big Ben
  • Accessibility: Guests have access to ground floor rooms with shower chairs and accessible baths. Guide dogs are also welcome.
  • Rates: From $627 per night
  • Parking: Valet parking, £60 per night (around $75)

The Lanesborough

Oetker Collection

The dedicated butler service ensures every guest’s needs are met.

Its interiors feature more of an old-world style than modern luxury.

When venturing across the pond, some travelers want a more traditional feel — and that’s what you get at The Lanesborough, a five-star property featured in the World’s Best Awards for the last three years. Here, no two guest experiences are the same; each of the 93 rooms and suites is uniquely designed to provide visitors with their own royal treatment.

The common areas, including the restaurants and bars, are just as special. For a pre-dinner cocktail, pull up a seat at the elegant Library Bar — or, if it’s an earlier hour, sip a coffee in the Withdrawing Room. At The Lanesborough Grill, you’ll find a menu focused on regional cuisine, and the year-round Garden Room offers beverages, light dishes, and a collection of Cuban cigars.

  • Nearby Attractions: Hyde Park Rose Garden, Harrods, The Queen's Gallery
  • Accessibility: The hotel has several accessible guest rooms with features like adjustable shower heads, wheel-in shower cubicles, grab rails, and raised toilets. The ground floor also has an accessible bathroom.
  • Rates: From $944 per night
  • Parking: Valet parking, £75 overnight/up to 24 hours (around $95)

The Cadogan, a Belmond Hotel

With only 54 rooms, it’s an intimate five-star experience.

It’s located in a quieter part of Knightsbridge; if you want around-the-clock hustle and bustle, consider another hotel.

The Cadogan made the T+L It List in 2022, a recognition that was soon followed by a place on the 2022 World’s Best Awards. As a member of the Belmond family, you can expect every corner of the property — down to the smallest of details — to be considered and expertly crafted. Given its smaller size, The Cadogan feels more akin to a stay at a close friend’s roomy abode; there’s a cozy fireplace, a terrace for dining, and your reservation includes exclusive access to the neighboring Cadogan Gardens (similar to New York City’s Gramercy Park).

  • Distance from Airport: 14 miles from LHR
  • Nearby Attractions: Chelsea Flower Show, Duke of York Square, Saatchi Gallery
  • Accessibility : The hotel has wheelchair access and some facilities for disabled guests; it’s recommended to call ahead if you have specific questions or requests.
  • Rates: From $708 per night

The Twenty Two

It has a unique, hip style that lends it a sort of “private club” feel.

There’s no on-site gym, but guests get complimentary use of nearby facilities.

Billed as a “hideaway for the creative at heart,” The Twenty Two opened in 2022 and soon topped the 2023 It List. The grade II-listed Edwardian manor now houses 31 rooms and suites, including a penthouse designed in the style of Christian Dior's private living space.

Given its relative newness and under-the-radar location, it still feels like a secret among those “in the know.” But once you experience its amenities — like the lounge with a balcony overlooking Grosvenor Square and the newspaper offering at breakfast — it’s hard not to tell everyone you know about this little slice of Mayfair luxury.

  • Nearby Attractions: The Wallace Collection, Hyde Park, Piccadilly Circus
  • Accessibility: There are a few accessible rooms available, but it’s also a smaller, older building; guests are encouraged to call ahead with specific inquiries or requirements.
  • Rates: From $550 per night
  • Parking: Self-parking; the hotel suggests Q-Park - Marble Arch (a 12-minute walk from the property.

The Milestone Hotel

The Red Carnation Hotel Collection

The themed suites add a bit of whimsy to your trip.

Some of the decor may come off as stuffy or too over-the-top for some tastes.

I made my way to The Milestone Hotel amid London’s infamous 2022 heatwave. While I was excited about the location — I hadn’t spent a lot of time exploring Kensington Gardens — I was mostly looking forward to its air conditioning. What I experienced, alongside the much-appreciated cooler temperatures, was a hotel with character, unexpected amenities, and a cocktail bar I continue to look back on fondly.

The well-equipped fitness center, spa, and indoor pool are always a plus at any hotel, but the equestrian-themed Stables Bar is one of the most memorable features (note the wooden paneling, green leather banquettes, and sporting art donning the walls). T+L readers also found The Milestone Hotel deserving of a few awards; it landed on the World’s Best Awards list in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

  • Neighborhood: Kensington
  • Distance from Airport: 13.5 miles from LHR
  • Nearby Attractions: Kensington Palace, Queen Victoria Statue, the Design Museum
  • Accessibility: There is only one accessible ground-floor guest room; it comes with wider door frames, a shower and toilet with grab rails, and no carpeting. There are eight steps to the main entrance, although a ramp to the side entrance is available. The hotel also has accessible elevators, large font menus, and disabled parking arrangements.
  • Rates: From $415 per night
  • Parking: Valet service or self-parking at nearby National Car Parks; any charges can be added to the final bill.

“This is a hotel for maximalists. Every room has different decor, but they are all over the top in the best way. Think patterned wallpaper, colorful velvet chairs, and jewel tone comforters. My room had a decadent red velvet theme. The location of the hotel could not be better, with Kensington Palace and Hyde Park just steps away.”

Know Before You Go

Tipping isn’t always required.

Unlike in the United States, tipping isn’t a requirement in London (and in much of Europe). If you experience truly outstanding service, however, you’re welcome to leave between 10 to 15 percent of your bill — a gesture that’s always appreciated. It’s also helpful to carry a bit of cash, so you’re able to tip a couple of pounds to bellhops or doormen who help with your luggage or getting a car.

Remember that they drive on the left-hand side of the road

Even if you’re not renting a car during your travels, it’s still important to understand the traffic patterns and directions. In London, for instance, you’ll need to be particularly cognizant when crossing the street. Luckily, many of the busier crosswalks include signs that remind you to “look left” or “look right.”

Don’t forget your umbrella

London is notorious for its rainy weather. Downpours can happen at any moment, at any time of year, so it’s best to come prepared. A bulky raincoat may be unnecessary, but you’ll benefit from tucking a travel-sized umbrella into your jacket or bag. You’ll also want to make sure your shoes can handle a bit of moisture, especially if you’re exploring on foot.

Have a basic understanding of London’s different neighborhoods

London is a large city, with 32 total boroughs; each borough is then further broken down into different neighborhoods. If you want a hotel with a more central location, consider a property in Soho, Covent Garden, Mayfair, Marylebone, Westminster, Southwark, or the City of London. The further you choose to stay outside of Central London, the more time you may spend on the bus or tube. It’s also important to note that you’ll hear people refer to areas based on their location to the Thames — either north or south of the river.

How We Chose These Hotels

Lydia Mansel is a travel journalist who has spent the last 12 years traveling to and from the United Kingdom. She has spent a significant amount of time in London, specifically — even living there for several months in 2021. Her trips frequently include hotel stays, and she has personally experienced a number of the featured properties.

In addition to her on-the-ground familiarity, she thoroughly researched each hotel's location, unique amenities, dining options, overall atmosphere, and past guest reviews; T+L editors also contributed their own recommendations and vouched for each property on the list. Each hotel aligns with our core T+L Hotel Values and has appeared in the T+L World’s Best Awards, sometimes multiple times, or on the highly coveted It List.
